None among the gods doth match Thy power, O Indra, mighty-souled and strong. Thou art supreme; all other deities do pale before the radiance of Thy might. We sing to Thee the song of praise, the ancient hymn that mortals raised since time's beginning.
The soma flows, the sacred plant doth fill the cups with precious draught. When Thou dost drink of it, O Lord, Thy strength doth swell as floods the stream in season. The very heavens quake at Thy increasing power; the earth doth groan beneath Thy weight.
Thy bay steeds are more fleet than thought itself; they carry Thee beyond the bounds of space and time. No journey is too far for them to journey; no obstacle too great to overcome. With reins of light Thou guidest them from one end of the cosmos to the other.
To battle Thou dost ride, O Indra, with the thunder-chariot bearing down all foes. The demons scatter at the sight of Thee; the pride of evil breaks before Thy might. We call upon Thee, Victor of all battles, grant us strength to stand like Thee unwavering.
The wealth that flows from Thy good hand doth overflow in every measure. To those who honor Thee with truth and right action, Thou dost give in rich abundance—cattle and treasure, sons and daughters, herds of every kind.
Thy generosity is as a river vast and ever-flowing, never dry nor diminished. Those who do thirst do come to drink, and none turn empty from Thy presence. The giver without measure, the friend of all who call, the one who hears the voice of those who praise.
The soma priest doth strain the sacred plant; the cups are set and filled with liquid gold. As Thou dost drink, the transformation happens—Thy form doth swell with power beyond all telling. The gods themselves do watch in awe to see the glory of Thy transformation.
Thy strength doth grow with every draught; Thy courage blazes bright as fire unquenched. No weariness doth touch Thee, mighty Lord; no fatigue nor weakness ever comes to Thee. Forever young, forever strong, forever burning with the fires of eternal victory.
The Maruts follow in Thy train, the storm-gods dancing to Thy will. They are the wild ones, fierce and uncontained, yet even they obey Thy every word. Together with them Thou dost ride forth to bring the order and the justice to all worlds.
Who else could boast of victories such as Thine? Who else could claim to have subdued the demons, released the waters, made the dawn to shine? Thou art unique, O Indra; there is none beside Thee worthy of such praise and adoration.
We seek from Thee, O mighty one, the blessings that Thou grantest to Thy faithful ones. Give us long life and good health, abundance and honor, the company of friends true and brave. Guard us from illness, from misfortune, from the hatred of our enemies.
The praise-song doth ascend to Thee on high; it rises like the smoke from sacred fire into the clear and endless sky. Hear it, O Indra, from Thy throne eternal; accept this offering of voices raised in hymn.
Thy enemies do flee before Thee like gazelles before the hunter; they hide themselves in caves and dark recesses. But no darkness can conceal them from Thy sight; Thy eye doth penetrate all places. Justice finds them out in the end.
The dragon, foe of all that lives and breathes, was slain by Thee and cast into the waters. The demons that did prey upon the righteous all have fallen at Thy hand. We are made safe by Thy great power; we can dwell in peace.
Thy kindness to the humble is renowned; the poor and weak do find in Thee a refuge sure. Thou liftest up the fallen; Thou dost clothe the naked and dost feed the hungry. Such is the heart of Thee, O Lord, O giver of all good.
The sacrifice ascends; the smoke doth rise in fragrant clouds toward the dwelling of the gods. Accept this offering, O mighty Indra; let it please Thee as the offerings of old did please Thee in the days of our ancestors.
Thus do we praise Thee, Indra, with this hymn of ancient power and truth. Be ever present to protect us; be our guide and our companion on the path of rightness. Grant us Thy favor now and always, for we are Thy servants and Thy children.
