This Good Works Translation is made from G. G. Bekoev's Russian translation of an Ossetian tale recorded in Памятники народного творчества осетин, Выпуск 3 (Vladikavkaz, 1928). The same printed volume contains an Ossetian text section, but the English page here follows Bekoev's 1928 Russian translation.
Translation
How the Giants of the Saggayevs Fell Asleep
Of the Saggayevs, when they lived in the mountains, one man served as a shepherd. The flock was at the camp. At one time he drove the flock to pasture. The flock was grazing; what else could it do?
Meanwhile he listened, and the shepherd from the south sounded his horn to him:
"Shepherd of the Saggayevs, be on guard! Two attackers, two giants, are headed to you as guests this evening. There is danger that they may do you some harm."
"Shepherd of the south, be kindly disposed toward me," the shepherd of the Saggayevs sounded back. "What am I to do? How am I to defend myself from evil?"
The shepherd of the south sounded:
"Among your flock there is a large he-goat. Slaughter it for supper for the two giants, and then sound to me again when they begin eating."
The shepherd of the Saggayevs drove his flock back to the camp, put it away in the cave, and busied himself in his own quarters, working.
Meanwhile the two giants came to him.
"May your flock multiply, shepherd!" said the giants.
"Guests, welcome. I will receive you as guests."
"Be blessed, but we too do not intend to leave here at such a late time."
The shepherd of the Saggayevs led out his he-goat from the flock and slaughtered it. He lit a fire, put the meat in the cauldron, and cooked supper. The giants sat and entertained themselves with conversation.
When the meat was cooked, the shepherd laid the whole goat in a trough and set it before the two guests. He himself again took the pipe and began to play:
"Shepherd of the south, I have done as you told me. My guests are sitting at the food and applying themselves with zeal. What else do you direct me to do?"
The shepherd of the south answered:
"After the meal they will ask for soup. But you must arrange it so that when you carry them the soup, you stumble or fall and spill the soup completely. But do the thing in such a way that both giants see that you spilled the soup by accident."
Then the giants said:
"Shepherd, soup for us, soup! Meat exists even on the top of a mountain."
The soup spilled while the shepherd was carrying it, and the giants did not taste it.
The shepherd of the Saggayevs began to play:
"They did not taste the soup, but what am I to do after this?"
The shepherd of the south said:
"Put them to sleep, and tomorrow it will be seen what will happen to them."
The giants said among themselves:
"We do not need food now. We will leave the shepherd until morning. He will do for our breakfast!"
They lay down in their beds, and soon their snoring was heard. In the morning the shepherd of the Saggayevs kept looking at his guests, as if to say, what has happened to them? He listened: their snoring was not heard, and their breathing also could not be noticed.
The shepherd sprang up, went closer to the giants, and called them, but they no longer heard the shepherd's words. They had fallen asleep forever.
Therefore the proverb remained: "They fell asleep like the giants of the Saggayevs."

These notes translate Bekoev's note 206, the note attached to this tale in the 1928 Russian section.
- Among mountain people, soup is served to those who want it after they have eaten meat. The proverb points to hunting life in the mountains: meat can be found on the top of a mountain, by killing, for example, a tur; but of course soup cannot be boiled there.

Как заснули великаны Саггаевых.
Из Саггаевых, когда жили они в горах, один ходил в пастухах. Стадо находилось в стоянке. В одно время погнал он стадо на пастбище. Пасется стадо, что же другое оно могло делать! Тем временем он слушает, и пастух с юга затрубил к нему:
-
Пастух Саггаевых, будь на-чеку! - два насильника, два великана направились к тебе в гости в этот вечер - есть опасность, что они могут причинить тебе какое-нибудь зло.
-
Пастух юга, будь ко мне благосклонен, - затрубил обратно пастух Саггаевых, - что мне сделать, как мне защититься от зла?
Пастух юга трубит:
- Среди твоего стада есть большой козел, зарежь его на ужин двум великанам, потом затруби опять ко мне, когда они примутся за еду.
Пригнал пастух Саггаевых свое стадо к стоянке, убрал его в пещеру, а сам возится в своем помещении, хлопочет.
Тем временем заявились к нему два великана.
-
Да множится стадо твое, пастух! - сказали великаны.
-
Гости, добро пожаловать, окажу вам прием, как гостям.
-
Будь благословен, но мы тоже не намерены уходить отсюда в такую позднюю пору.
Пастух Саггаевых вывел из стада козла своего и зарезал его; развел костер, положил мясо в котел и варит ужин. Великаны сидят, развлекаются разговором.
Когда мясо сварилось, то пастух выложил всего козла в корыто и поставил перед двумя гостями; сам взял опять свирель и заиграл:
- Пастух юга, сделал я так, как ты сказал мне: гости мои сидят за едой и стараются с усердием. Что еще укажешь мне?
Пастух юга отзывается:
- После еды они потребуют супу. Но ты сделай так, чтобы, когда понесешь им суп, ты споткнулся или упал и разлил совершенно суп. Но сделай дело так, чтобы оба великана увидели, что суп вылил ты нечаянно.
Тогда великаны говорят:
- Пастух, супу нам, супу! мясо и на вершине горы есть 206).
Суп вылился, когда нес его пастух, и великаны не отведали его.

Пастух Саггаевых заиграл:
- Супу они не отведали, но в дальнейшем что мне делать?
Пастух юга:
- Уложи их спать, а завтра видно будет, что будет с ними.
Великаны сказали про себя:
- Не нуждаемся мы сейчас в еде, оставим пастуха до утра, - сгодится нам для завтрака!
Легли в свои постели, и вскоре послышался их храп. Утром пастух Саггаевых поглядывает на гостей своих - дескать, что с ними. Прислушивается - не слышно их храпа, и дыхания их тоже нельзя заметить.
Вскочил пастух, подошел ближе к великанам, зовет их, но они не слыхали больше слов пастуха - заснули навсегда.
Поэтому осталась поговорка: "Заснули, как великаны Саггаевых".
Russian Note 206
- У горцев суп подается, желающим, после того, как поедят мясо. Поговорка указывает на охотничью жизнь в горах: мясо можно найти и на вершине горы, убив, например, тура; но, понятно, там супу нельзя сварить.
