This Good Works Translation is made from G. G. Bekoev's Russian translation of an Ossetian tale recorded in Памятники народного творчества осетин, Выпуск 3 (Vladikavkaz, 1928). The same printed volume contains an Ossetian text section, but the English page here follows Bekoev's 1928 Russian translation.

Translation

The Stepmother and Two Brothers

There lived a husband and wife in a village of the Narts. Children were born to them. At one time the children's mother died, and they were left orphans. The father married another wife, and the orphans began the game of life with a stepmother.

The children grew up and were already able to work. Meanwhile their father too died. Since their father had taught them to work, the sons did not let the household totter. On the contrary, they improved the conditions of their life, and their property increased.

They lived and lived, but things did not go smoothly for them with the stepmother: they could not get along, and they quarreled every day. Then the stepmother thought and said to herself:

"Let me do such a thing to them that they will squander all their property, so that from their poverty they will not even be able to move."

The stepmother became generous. She held nothing back in the house, spared nothing, saved nothing anymore. Every day she gave her stepsons good food and drinks.

"Eat, my little suns, so that your nana may be a sacrifice for your heads. Life in the world is two days. What we eat, what clothing we wear, that is ours. Let the rest fall to whomever it will."

With such affectionate language the stepmother began to speak. In her opinion, soon nothing should have been left in the orphans' house, and they would be left with empty hands. But the stepmother was mistaken: thinking to cause evil, she arranged everything for the better.

The better they ate, and the better the care they received from the stepmother, the more diligently and more strongly the orphans began to work, and they noticeably became richer.

"Nothing came of this," said the stepmother. "Someone threw his female dog from a cliff, and she caught a fox for him; that is how it has happened with my scheme. I will go and ask the Kulbadag woman; perhaps she will teach me."

The Kulbadag woman said to her:

"Those hardworking young men will not become poor for anything so long as they eat well, so long as they have strength."

"Then how?"

"Give them bad kvass and underbaked churek. Their strength will quickly fail; they will not be able to work. When they are unable to work, then even you will be able to understand that they will surely become poor."

From that time the stepmother began feeding the orphans bad kvass and underbaked churek. The young men's strength truly broke. They could no longer work, and then they fell into such poverty that they could not even raise a hand to their mouths: there was nothing to eat.

Мачеха и два брата.

Жили муж и жена в селении Нартов; родились у них дети. В одно время у детей умерла мать, и они остались сиротами. Отец женился на другой жене, и сироты начали жизненную игру с мачехой. Дети подросли, уж были в состоянии работать. Тем временем умер у них и отец. Так как отец научил их работать, сыновья не дали пошатнуться хозяйству, напротив, они улучшили условия своей жизни, имущество их увеличилось. Живут они, живут, но с мачехой у них дела идут негладко: не уживаются, ссорятся каждый день. Тогда мачеха задумалась и сказала себе:

• Давай сделаю им так, чтобы они расстратили все свое имущество, чтобы они от нищеты своей не в состоянии были даже сдвинуться.

Стала щедра мачеха: ничего не удерживала в доме (из имущества), не жалеет ничего, не сберегает больше. Каждый день подает пасынкам хорошую пищу, напитки.

• Ешьте, мои солнышки, чтобы нана ваша была жертвой за ваши головы: жизнь на свете - два дня 191), - что поедим, что поносим (одежда) - это наше, остальное пусть достанется кому угодно.

Таким ласковым языком стала говорить мачеха. По ее мнению скоро ничего не должно было остаться в доме сирот, останутся они с пустыми руками. Но мачеха ошиблась: думая причинить зло, она устроила все к лучшему. Чем лучше ели, чем лучше был за ними уход со стороны мачехи, тем прилежнее, сильнее начали работать сироты и заметно стали богаче.

• Из этого ничего не вышло, - сказала мачеха: кто-то сбросил свою суку с обрыва, а она поймала ему лисицу 192), - так случилось и с моей затеей. Пойду спрошу Кулбадаг женщину, может быть, она научит меня.

Кулбадаг женщина сказала ей:

• Не обеднеют ни за что эти трудолюбивые молодые люди до тех пор, пока они хорошо едят, пока у них есть сила.

• Как же?

• А ты давай им скверный квас и недопеченный чурек: быстро пропадет у них сила, не будут в силах работать. Когда они не в состоянии будут работать, то, даже ты сможешь это понять, они непременно обеднеют.

С этого времени мачеха стала кормить сирот скверным квасом и недопеченным чуреком. У молодых людей, действительно, сломилась сила, не могли уж работать, потом впали в такую бедность, что не могли даже руку поднести ко рту (нечего было есть).
