Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the first สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It begins with the royal proem, then narrates Hiran's theft of the earth, Phra Narai's Varaha-form victory, the founding of Ayutthaya, the enthronement of Anomatan, the founding of Lanka, and the first succession in both royal lines.

Opening Praise

[Rai]

May auspicious perfection uphold the great royal city and its glory, splendid as heaven, spreading over earth and sky. May the city of Dvaravati, seat of kings, stand over the three worlds like the earth itself. The Three Jewels shine with six-colored radiance. The three worlds are cooled; the enemies are subdued; the people rejoice in peace. Wealth, jewels, mansions, women of beauty, and a city bright as the sky all gather around the righteous king, lord over the lower world, who is like Phra Narai widening the bounds of the land and making the city's jewels shine.

His heart is set on merit and knowledge. He wishes for awakening, for the conquering of greed, for the crossing of the flood of rebirth, and for the rescue of beings. He spends treasure easily on what is hard to do, gives without weariness, and works for the flourishing of the Tripitaka and the Buddhist teaching. He gathers the sons of the Buddha, monks rich in Dharma, and supports their dwellings. Wat Mahathat becomes a boundary of the Sangha; he acts as patron of the faith, raises a fifth council, and has the palm-leaf scriptures written out complete. He gives alms without limit: boats, litters, robes, silk, fine cloth, and costly offerings dedicated as merit.

He also renews and builds monasteries, bright with gold and jewels, named Wat Phra Chetuphon, beautiful as if Indra had arranged it. Cloisters hold rows of images; halls are carved with designs that make whoever sees them forget the dark. His gifts are spread everywhere. He gives gold and silver, makes the five great gifts, honors the lineage of the sun, redeems the poor, and raises grand reliquary shrines at Wat Phra Si Sanphet. The pavilions, upper and lower designs, gold tracery inside and out, celestial assembly halls, jeweled pillars, silver, gold, and nine-gem parasols, and offerings beyond numbering all shine in worship.

The Emerald Buddha is honored by multitudes, drawing the mind of the world upward. Whoever sees it forgets suffering. The breast of the city is happy; the face of the city blossoms like a lotus. Ayutthaya delights under the merit and royal power of the king, who upholds the ten royal virtues. His majesty spreads like parasols, banners, and rays of light cooling every land. The people rejoice, young women and men celebrate, lutes, drums, gongs, horns, and dances resound. Poets skilled in many meters compose in verse, chant, and song. By royal command they set in order the ancient tale, the legend called the Ramakien, in which the enemies are crushed and the demons perish. The royal speech is like a garland, beautiful as a lotus, fragrant in the mouth, pleasing to the ear, made to celebrate and proclaim the matchless glory of the lord, the white-elephant king who rules the city.

Hiran Rolls Up the Earth

Now the tale will speak of Hiran, a fierce and mighty yaksha. He was brave in battle, famous through the worlds, and lived on the summit of Mount Cakravala in a shining jewel palace. Sages, gods, and celestial adepts feared his power. Because of his rites and austerities at Mount Winantaka, the Lord had given the demon a boon, so that his strength grew terrible. Filled with arrogance, he meant to destroy the three worlds. Showing his power, the demon rolled up the earth.

Jambudvipa, Uttarakuru, Aparagoyana, and every continent were taken. He tucked the world beneath his arm and carried the earth down to the underworld.

Then the gods of every station were alarmed. Panicked and confused, they flew together in haste.

When they reached Mount Kailasa, they bowed at the feet of Phra Isuan and said: "Hiran the demon has grown arrogant and cruel. He oppresses gods and demons through every heaven, from the heights to the depths. Worse still, he has rolled up the earth, intending to destroy the whole world. Now he has taken it down to the underworld. Life in the world will end. Lord, crown of the gods, preserve the lives of beings."

Then the lord of Kailasa heard the assembly of gods and pondered. "Shame on Hiran, lord of demons. His wickedness is beyond measure. He has broken the vow he made. I will not let that demon live."

Having thought this, he gave a command to the radiant Lord of the Discus: "Mighty one, go destroy that demon."

Then Phra Narai received the command of the lord of the three worlds. He bowed and went quickly down to the underworld.

When he arrived, he saw the yaksha Hiran displaying his fierce magic, holding the three earths in his grip. The Lord then changed his own body.

He became a great boar, with diamond tusks shining beautifully, his body white and bright as cotton, and rushed upon the demon.

Then Hiran, the powerful yaksha, saw the bold boar coming straight at him. The demon lord was enraged. His eyes were red like the fire at the end of an age; he stamped his foot until the three worlds shook. Not knowing that this was Phra Hari, the yaksha charged in attack.

Then the holy boar gnashed his tusks, his red eyes bristling, and spun forward to the fight.

He gored and bit the demon everywhere. The demon fell, unable to withstand his strength. His heads were broken, his body broken, his life broken by the mighty power of the Lord of the Discus.

When he had destroyed the wicked demon, glorious Phra Narai lifted the earth back with his tusks and set it in its proper place by his power.

Then he became the Lord riding Garuda, holding the divine weapons aloft. He flew through the clouds and returned to the Ocean of Milk.

Arriving there, he entered his couch upon the waters, in the middle of the vast ocean, above the shining serpent throne, and set his mind in mantra and ritual.

The Lotus Child

[Rai]

A lotus arose, graceful and open to the sunlight. It grew from the womb and blossomed, and within it was a beautiful royal child. He dwelt inside a ruby-like chamber, bright as Brahma riding the swan. Then the powerful Lord of the Discus took the child in his arms and flew away.

When he arrived, he went straight to the Lord of the Three Worlds, presented the young prince, and reported how he had killed the demon.

Then the radiant Lord Swayambhu rejoiced and spoke fair words: "Since Hiran has perished, the world is happy again. This powerful child belongs to the line of the four-armed lord. He will be the root of a noble royal line, unsurpassed in sustaining the world. In this Treta age he will cool the world's distress."

He spoke, then issued a divine command to radiant Makkhawan: "Go down and build a city in noble Jambudvipa."

Then Hatsanai, lord of the Thirty-Three, bowed his head to receive Phra Isuan's command and returned to great Vejayanta.

When he reached his throne, he commanded Matali to gather the gods. They would go together to build a city.

Then radiant Matali bowed his head, received the command with joy, offered joined hands, and went out.

He arranged the hosts of attendant gods, all wise and brave. One group held peacock tails and led the procession. One group held purple banners marked with lions. One group held green dragon banners of graceful color. One group held golden lotus standards, three flowers shining together. They surrounded the lord Airavata and waited for the departure.

Then radiant Makkhawan left his shining celestial seat and entered the bathing pavilion.

He bathed and refreshed himself, then anointed himself with sweet divine perfumes. Celestial women fanned him gently. He put on patterned garments: gold tendrils, jeweled borders, a cloth of shining pattern, breast ornaments, chains, armlets, rings bright with pearls, a shining divine crown, earrings, garlands, and flowers. Taking the thunderbolt weapon and the sword of power, splendid above the gods, he came forth and mounted the elephant.

O royal elephant, Airavata the great elephant: thirty-three vast heads, a jeweled palace on every head, huge and white as a silver Kailasa mountain. Two hundred and thirty-one curved tusks bore lotus ponds and celestial maidens. Each thing was sevenfold, appearing on every strong tusk. In the petals of those lotuses were more than ten thousand women. Golden jeweled harness, shining nets of gems, peacock parasols, yak-tail fans, sunshades, and banners moved above him. Flutes, drums, and gongs resounded together. The gods surrounded him in ranks and hurried forward.

When he reached Jambudvipa, he looked in every direction. In the east he saw a fitting piece of earth. Four great ascetics were there, practicing austerities and increasing their merit. He halted the hosts of gods, came down from the elephant, and went to them.

He bowed reverently to the teachers, lifted his hands in worship, and asked: "How many years have you been practicing austerity in this forest? Have you cultivated meditation, guarded absorption, and spread the four divine abidings in happiness? What are your names, holy ascetics?"

Then the four strong ascetics heard and answered: "Each of us has lived in the forest for a hundred thousand years, practicing restraint and austerity. As for our names: I am Achanakawi; this one is Yuk-akkhara; that one is Thaha Rishi; and that one is Yaka Muni. Our austerities are equal. But why has the lord of heaven come down from heaven with all these gods? It is wondrous beyond measure."

Then radiant Hatsanai heard and answered: "We have come, teachers, because Lord Isuan has sent me to build a royal city for the divine prince. I will tell you the whole matter from the beginning."

Ayutthaya Founded

[Rai]

Then the four strong ascetics heard Kosiy's words and rejoiced. They said: "This forest is most excellent. It is called Dvaravati Forest, where the umbrella-tree of Phra Suli stands as a pillar. It lies to the east before the guardian spirit shrine and has the marks of a city. We will give the city's name, making it auspicious. Join the name of this forest with the names of us four. Call it Krung Si Ayutthaya, Dvaravati district. It will be a place worshipped by the three worlds, and its fame will spread through all three realms."

Then Kosiy heard the great ascetics and approved everything. He commanded Phra Wisnukam: "Create the royal city and make it greatly delightful, according to the divine command of Phra Suli."

Then radiant Phra Wisnukam received the divine command with joy, offered joined hands, and went out.

Standing before the guardian shrine, he displayed his power until the earth shook and manifested the victorious royal city by his might.

[Market-view]

The three great palaces rose beautifully high into the sky: four-faced, sheathed in bright gold, with glass roof-blades joined together, delicate finials and descending ridges, gold-carved projections, golden pavilions shining. Seven reduced stories were floored with crystal and mixed with nine jewels. Guard-houses were plated with silver and bright as mirrors; lion fronts flashed with gems. Left and right were audience halls, jeweled seats, rows of inner apartments, and pierced jeweled landing stages screened from sight. The royal forecourt was spread with silver, clean and white as a conch. Guard-houses, palace officers' quarters, storehouses, elephant stables, horse stables, chariot houses, vehicle halls, judges' halls, and military fields stood complete. Three layers of jeweled walls enclosed the city; moats surrounded it like an ocean. Dragon banners stood on the battlements; golden boundary stones marked the city. Fort gun-slots, battle towers, and rows of gates shone with jewels. It was delightful as Brahma's city.

There were jeweled ponds and gardens, magnificent with many kinds of trees. Every kind bore fruit and hanging flowers. Lotuses, red and golden, crowded the water; pollen fell into the pools and fragrance spread everywhere. Palmyra trees surrounded the city as its boundary, their fruit like gold, their leaves and stems mixed with gems. When the wind passed through, the sound was sweet like heavenly music, forever resounding through the city like Dusit heaven.

Then he gave it the name Ayutthaya Nakhon Buri Si, according to the names spoken by the sages, a place of auspicious prosperity. He brought people from the four continents to serve as its population, with armies and ministers on left and right. Buildings and shops lined the streets; the people filled the city. The women of the inner palace were selected for beauty and excellence, all of the five marks of loveliness, numbering fifty-six thousand.

When the city was finished, the Three-Eyed Lord gathered the gods and returned to golden Mount Kailasa.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet and reported to radiant Phra Isuan: "The city you sent me to build has now been completed according to your command."

Then Phra Isuan, supreme lord, heard and rejoiced. He issued a divine command: "Dear grandson, go rule that royal city. Be the crest-jewel of the world and the earth, lineage of Narai, incarnation who will defeat the demons. Let your name follow the divine solar line: Anomatan, mighty wielder of the discus." He gave his beloved grandson a ring, a bow, a powerful arrow, a diamond trident, and a mace, and blessed him: "May you flourish in power, art, and archery. Do not delay against hostile enemies. May you be stable and prosper in happiness."

Then radiant Phra Anomatan bowed with joined hands, received the blessing of the Lord of the Three Worlds, and accepted the divine weapons and ring with joy. He said, "May I take your power above my head and continue under its protection."

Then the lord of great Kailasa commanded Hatsanai and the powerful gods: "Bring the royal Garuda vehicle and carry our radiant grandson. Today is an auspicious day. Deliver the city to him."

Then Hatsanai, lord of the Thirty-Three, received the command of the Lord of the World, bowed in farewell, and went out.

He ordered the mighty royal Garuda, whose power shakes the earth, to be prepared, and invited the victorious scion of Narai to bathe.

Then radiant Phra Anomatan rejoiced and went to bathe in the river.

He anointed himself with excellent perfume, fragrant with divine flowers. He put on jeweled trousers, a dragon-patterned garment, jeweled borders, emerald and ruby pendants, purple cloth patterned with gold, a carved golden belt, breast ornaments, three red-gold chains, golden armlets, rings glittering with diamonds, a great imperial crown, pearl flowers, radiant earrings, bow and arrows in his hands, mace and diamond trident complete. Beautiful in body, dress, and glory, he walked to mount Garuda.

Then Hatsanai, lord of the Thirty-Three, when the auspicious moment arrived, ordered the gods to wave banners and lead the way.

O Garuda, royal Garuda, brave in war and skilled in battle, he leapt over mountain peaks and flew through the sky. His two wings sounded like the heavens, thundering through the world. His wingbeats raised deep winds, clouds and mist swirling through the air. He flew faster than a storm wind, racing with the chariot of the sun. All royal insignia were present: parasols, banners, gongs, drums, flutes resounding in the sky. The divine procession hastened on and descended upon the city by its power.

When they reached great Ayutthaya, radiant Hatsanai invited the royal grandson of Phra Suli up into the jeweled palace.

Then he appointed Mani Keson, a woman from the northern continent, beloved and beautiful, her face bright like the moon, as chief queen of the glorious king. He gave him sixteen thousand inner women, lovely and adorned, with elder attendants and matrons in their ranks and duties. He also gave fourfold armies, generals and ministers great and small, jewels, rings, and royal wealth to the divine prince.

When the handover of the royal city was complete, Kosiy, lord of the Thirty-Three, and the attendant gods rejoiced and gave blessings: "May you rule the kingdom, increase in auspicious happiness, and rejoice." Then the lord of immortals led the gods back.

Then Lord Anomatan ruled the heavenly city of Dvaravati. His name and power became famous and feared; hostile rulers trembled. Vidyadharas and nagas, and all three worlds, depended on his glory. Every royal city was overawed and submitted to him. They arranged flowers and gold in rows, came to bow at his lotus feet, and offered blessings. The people, merchants, and commoners rejoiced, going and trading constantly. The city was happy and delighted.

Lanka Founded

[Slow]

Now the tale will speak of radiant Sahabadi Brahma, dwelling happily at all times in a jeweled palace. He thought of Sahamaliwan of the solar lineage, whom he had sent to live on the island of Lanka and who had fled from the Lord of the Discus down to the underworld. The kingdom of Lanka had no one guarding its royal seat. It had long been empty and silent; it would be a pity if Brahma's line were lost. "I must build the city again, make it enduring, and invite a powerful Dhada to be its pillar."

Having thought this, he gave a divine command to radiant Brahma: "Prepare the golden swan and go build the city of Lanka."

Then brave Achada Brahma received the command, bowed, took leave, and came out from the divine palace.

He gathered the hosts of high Brahmas, all powerful and brave. One group held splendid banners and led the attendants on the road. Another bore white parasols, walking in ranks at left and right. Another held peacock banners beside the royal golden swan. Another carried standards in lines. Trumpets, conches, gongs, and drums were set in order, awaiting the departure.

Then radiant Sahabadi Brahma left his shining divine seat and went to bathe in the ocean.

Divine water fell like rain. He wore fragrant perfume mixed with pollen, lower garments with curved designs, kinnara-patterned cloth, trailing jeweled borders, emerald and ruby pendants, breast ornaments and chains, serpent-gold armlets, rings set with yellow diamonds gleaming on all ten fingers, a jeweled crown, flowers, radiant earrings, a sharp sword in one hand and a powerful trident in the other. Beautiful as Vessavana, he went to mount the golden swan.

O golden swan, golden royal bird, leaping and moving proudly, chest lifted, tail raised, both wings beating through the sky. Its curved beak and crest were graceful; its feathers were arranged like jeweled ornaments and flashed in the sunlight like pure crystal. A throne stood on its back, bright with ornaments; white parasols and fans were splendid; hosts of Brahmas surrounded it. It glided through the air, radiant as the sky itself, and quickly flew toward Lanka.

He saw Mount Nilakala, a vast peak reaching into the sky, standing at the center of the realm, high and overhanging the clouds, greater than every mountain, black as sapphire cloth. On its summit lay Lanka, vast and possessed of magic power. "This mountain is excellent. It can be the foundation of a city." So he ordered Wisnu Brahma to manifest the city at once.

Then radiant Wisnu Brahma received the command with joined hands and left the assembly.

He raised his hands above his head, worshipped the supreme Brahma, and manifested everything in gold and jewels by his mighty power.

Moats, embankments, and walls surrounded the city as firm boundaries. Battle towers, gun-slots, battlements, gates, forts, and camps stood in rows. Streets and roads were smooth, their stone paving gleaming like flowing water. An inner jeweled wall shone with precious stones. The three great palaces rose high into the sky, each with five Brahma-faced peaks and elegant roof-blades, jeweled nāgas biting gemmed ornaments, shining windows, hanging and standing finials in descending ranks, and serpent ornaments rushing across the gables. Four-faced throne halls and open seats shone; forecourts glittered with jewels like golden mansions in heaven.

There was a field spread with golden sand where warriors could train, and stables for horses, chariots, and elephants, with storehouses at left and right. Outside the city were delightful gardens, broad and pleasant. Trees stood in rows, leaves trembling, fruits and flowers thick and lovely. There were pleasure palaces and seats beneath trees, and lotus ponds like hanging vines in Indra's heaven. Gentle winds passed softly, carrying pollen and fragrance; bees and black bees flew, hovering over the flowers.

He made the shores of the ocean into moats surrounding the kingdom's boundaries. In the great sea he appointed kinds of fish as chiefs: timi and timingila fish, and fierce sea creatures patrolling the waters, roaming to guard against danger beneath the great river. Behind the ocean he set yaksha women and spirits as guards, and arranged powers to resist demons, with hundreds of koṭis of skilled troops. Gandharvas patrolled the air and the borders of heaven; they guarded the slopes of Mount Cakravala. The whole city was completed.

Then radiant Sahabadi Brahma, having finished building the city, rejoiced. He named it Phichai Lanka, the great royal city. He brought hosts of demons from the slopes of Mount Cakravala Asakan to serve as ministers, generals, and strong armies. The kumbhandas numbered a hundred thousand koṭis; the place was lively like the realm of the asuras. Then he spoke to the Brahma Dhada, master of renowned magical knowledge: "Powerful lord, supreme in merit from former cultivation, I will have you dwell here and rule the kingdom, continuing the line of universal monarchs on the island of Lanka as a great support for the earth."

Then radiant Dhada Brahma heard the divine king's words, joined his hands, and replied: "Your Majesty's compassion and grace have no limit. I will receive it upon my head and never offend beneath your feet."

Then Sahabadi Brahma, lord Brahma, heard and rejoiced. He gave him shining Malika, endowed with the five beauties, her face bright like a woman of heaven, to be his lovely chief queen. Her attendants were all demon women, sixteen thousand graceful women of splendid form. Dhada, lord of Brahmas, would become the crest of Lanka. Sahabadi named him Thao Chaturaphak, according to the power of Brahma's line. He gave him a potent trident, a jeweled mace of power, and a jeweled royal parasol of supreme force, and taught him magical rites and commands. Even if fierce enemies came around the city, if the parasol were raised in the center of the capital, it would hide the light of the shining sun and make darkness like evening night. Enemies would not see the city, while those inside could see all their foes. This parasol was supreme over heaven and earth; Indra and Brahma would fear its power.

Then radiant Thao Chaturaphak bowed his head in reverence, received the trident, diamond mace, and weapons, and learned the mantras by heart. He knew all the lasting arts and possessed power surpassing the three worlds.

Then wise and brave Sahabadi Brahma finished handing over the royal wealth and blessed him: "Rule and enjoy the kingdom. Increase in happiness beyond comparison. Sustain all your troops and people. May enemies be defeated by your power." Having spoken, he mounted the golden swan, leapt into the sky, and with the hosts of Brahmas and gods went straight to Dusit heaven.

Then radiant Thao Chaturaphak ruled the city of Lanka with beautiful Queen Malika. He was surrounded by sixteen thousand inner women, lovely as celestial maidens, like the moon ringed by stars in the sky. He possessed ministers, fourfold armies, warriors, and abundant wealth and estates, enjoying pleasure as if in heaven.

His beautiful chief queen carried a pregnancy for ten full months, then gave birth to a royal son with the form of a four-armed demon. The royal father and mother rejoiced together and named him Latsatian, whose fierce power became famous over all the earth.

Then radiant Thao Anomatan ruled for ten thousand years and had a royal son. His name was Atchaban, renowned in power, wisdom, and skill. His glory was famous through the three worlds; all ten directions depended on his majesty. The king handed over the royal wealth and white parasol to his son. Then the royal father, lord over the sky, reached the end of his life.
