Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the tenth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Kaiyaket's dream and the sending of Kaiyakesi to Ayutthaya, her reception by Atchaban, the consecration of Thotsarot, Atchaban's flesh-gift for the golden deer, Shiva's carrying of Atchaban to Kailasa, and Thotsarot's first garden procession with the three queens.

Translation

Kaiyaket Sends Kaiyakesi to Ayutthaya

Now the tale will speak of Thao Kaiyaket, lord of Kaiyaket city. He enjoyed heavenly royal fortune and was a great and excellent support of the realm. Countless fourfold troops surrounded him, and the inner palace was adorned with women of beautiful form. The king had a royal daughter named Nang Kaiyakesi. She was fifteen years old, graceful, lovely, and slender. Kings of the solar line had come to ask for her, but the king would not give his beloved child. Her father and mother guarded her like their own hearts. The people of the kingdom had no distress; throughout the great realm no one suffered oppression.

At evening, when the shining sun had hidden behind the beautiful mountain edge, the king walked gracefully into his adorned sleeping chamber.

He dreamed an astonishing dream, a divine omen. The moon stood in a halo in the sky, and all the stars of heaven entered the halo. The moon's radiance was stronger than the dawn. It shone over the whole surface of the sky; no cloud or mist could mingle with it. It drove a chariot and illumined the four continents. The king woke at once.

When the sun shone with golden light, he walked out to the royal hall.

He gave royal command to the diligent astrologers: "Tonight I had an astonishing dream." The righteous king recounted it from beginning to end.

Then the old astrologer of rank received the command, consulted the manuals, bowed his head in reverence, and spoke: "This dream is entirely fruitful and prosperous; there is no ill omen in it. The bright moon in its halo signifies a king of glorious fame. All rulers in Jambu will come to rely beneath his feet, like the stars set in ordered rows within the moon's halo. The light stronger than dawn means that he will make the world happy and joyous, day and night without end, and will subdue hosts of dangerous enemies. Driving the chariot to illumine the four continents means that his fierce power will spread through heaven and underworld, and no one will withstand his might."

Then Thao Kaiyaket, hearing the astrologer's interpretation, was puzzled and thoughtful. He asked the ministers, great and small: "Which king of the solar line on this Jambu continent bears such mighty power, royal freedom, and bright splendor? Is there one who is the crown of the world?"

Then the priests and ministers, great and small, heard the lord of earth's question and bowed together. They answered: "There is a descendant of exalted kings, created in the line of Phra Chakrara. His name is righteous Atchaban, who rules the territory of Ayutthaya. His power has subdued all ten directions. He has a mighty jeweled sword; he sends it forth to slay his enemies. He cut off Asuraphak's head and set it to guard the beautiful garden. Every year the kings of every city offer him golden flowers. That king has a royal son whose fame shakes sky and earth. He is excellent in beauty and marks. He is named Prince Thotsarot."

Then Thao Kaiyaket, hearing the ministers' words, reflected: "If I remain still like this, in time there will be fault. I must bind him as a friend." Having thought this, he went on.

He reached the jeweled sleeping chamber, sat near the chief queen, and told her his dream and the astrologers' interpretation. "Now I am deeply anxious because of our beloved child. If I give her to that king, perhaps her fortune is not equal. Yet Prince Thotsarot, son of Thao Atchaban, is of the line of the lord who rides Garuda and has awesome power. Our young Nang Kaiyakesi is worthy to be given to him as wife and companion. What do you think, lady?"

Then the lovely queen heard her royal husband and raised joined hands to answer: "If Your Majesty will give our beloved child to be the chief darling of the mighty son of Thao Atchaban in victorious Ayutthaya, the rank is equal, solar line to solar line, like the sun with the moon. Her fame and honor will be beautiful and known throughout the world."

Then splendid Thao Kaiyaket, having consulted with his chief queen and found that they agreed, rejoiced as if he had gained heavenly treasure. He left the bright jeweled chamber and went out to the victorious royal hall.

When he arrived, he commanded the great minister: "Prepare a royal letter and send it to victorious Ayutthaya, offering my excellent daughter to the lord of the Hari line. Arrange troops and envoys as well, and send the young noble lady with them."

Then the brave great minister bowed at the lotus feet, received the royal command, and went out.

He appointed three envoys, all intelligent and well-mannered, with elder ladies, inner-palace attendants, women in waiting, and serving girls in full number. He had the scribes write the letter on shining gold palm leaf, and prepared a jeweled and golden chariot, all according to the royal command.

Then the lovely queen, dear beyond measure, embraced the young princess and performed the ceremony of receiving and steadying her spirit. She spoke gentle words: "Beloved child, jewel of your mother's heart, you will leave your mother's breast and go to Ayutthaya. You will be a servant beneath the lotus feet of the bright lord of the Hari line. Be modest, be loyal and faithful, and entrust your life to the king. Strive to gain merit, be careful in royal duties, and give heed. Do not mingle with evil, lest danger come. Then you will be the splendor of Ayutthaya."

Then beloved Nang Kaiyakesi heard her mother's instruction. Tears filled her eyes, and she did not speak.

At dawn bright Thao Kaiyaket ordered his daughter to enter the bathing pool.

Then Nang Kaiyakesi, jewel of his heart, bowed her head to receive her father's command and went to bathe in the water.

She bathed and cleansed herself. Fragrant pollen spread its scent. She wore purple cloth with rice-offering patterns and kinnari dancers at the hem; a gold-ground shoulder cloth with green lining; a body belt all of topaz; breast ornaments and time-plates; emerald directional plates and chain ornaments across the breast. Golden armlets and bracelets shone with jewels, and diamond rings flashed brightly. Her jeweled crown and ear ornaments caught the color of her golden skin. Lovely as the splendor of the city, she walked out and raised joined hands.

Then her father and mother, both radiant sovereigns, felt longing for their daughter as if their own lives were leaving. They stroked her back and spoke: "Jewel of our eyes, beloved one, may you prosper in well-being and have no danger. May you be chief among women." Having spoken, the two solar-line kings led their beloved daughter down from the jeweled sky-bright palace, while the women attendants followed.

When they arrived, they had her mount the adorned chariot, lovely like the moon. Nang Kuchi the hunchback, her trusted companion, also mounted and crouched to serve the princess.

Then beautiful Nang Kaiyakesi bowed farewell to her father and mother. She was full of grief and longing. Tears filled her eyes and flowed over her face. She mourned: "Alas, from now on I must go far away. Where will I see my parents' feet again?"

Then Thao Kaiyaket, when the auspicious time arrived, ordered the chariot to move.

Beautiful was the royal chariot, beautiful the lovely princess. Beautiful were the noble horses and beautiful the charioteer driving the car. Beautiful were the curved yoke, the hubs and wheels, the ranked attendants' chariots, the fourfold troops, and the tenfold army. Beautiful were the high regalia in bright lines, the fluttering banners leading the way, the tumult of gongs and drums, and the rows of road and forest.

As the procession passed through fields, hills, streams, and mountain woods, the princess thought of her father and mother and felt empty-hearted. Seeing golden peacocks searching for their mothers, she felt like a child who had left home in the great forest. Hearing forest birds cry, she thought of the sounds of the palace. Seeing mynas perched side by side and speaking together, she remembered her mother embracing and teaching her. Seeing birds guarding eggs in their nests, she remembered how carefully she had been guarded from childhood. "Alas, from now on I shall be far from the feet of my royal father and mother. By now they must be grieving, full of pain and longing."

Then the three envoys of good manners led the beloved princess through the forest, halting for the night along the way. When they reached the end of Ayutthaya's frontier, they stopped the army and informed the skilled border officer about the royal letter and its business.

Then the border officer of rank heard and rejoiced. He mounted his horse and rode into the city.

When he arrived, he dismounted and paid respect to the four ministers. He reported that Kaiyaket city had sent envoys bearing a letter.

Then the ministers of left and right heard the frontier officer's report and went together into the royal hall.

They bowed at the lotus feet and told the lord of the Hari line: "Righteous Thao Kaiyaket has sent envoys bringing his daughter and a royal letter to offer beneath Your Majesty's feet. For now the troops are resting at the border of the city."

Then lord Atchaban heard the ministers and rejoiced as if he had received a heavenly realm. He commanded the great minister: "Arrange both the front and inner palace parties and go out to receive the young lady."

Then the wise and brave minister bowed his head to receive the royal command and crawled out from the shining royal hall.

He notified all departments: palace women, chamber attendants, elder ladies, and eunuchs searched and arranged themselves in bustle and noise. When everything was ready, all offices left and the wise minister hurried from the city.

When they reached the wide river landing, they halted the troops and informed the Kaiyaket ministers according to the king's command.

Then the ministers of splendid Kaiyaket city learned that the lord of earth had sent ministers to receive the princess. They arranged themselves by ranks and divisions, inspecting the left and right processions. The ministers of Ayutthaya led the way.

When they arrived, the princess rested at the bright jeweled landing. The elder ladies of Ayutthaya raised joined hands and invited her onward.

Then Nang Kaiyakesi, jewel of the heart, stepped down from the adorned chariot and walked by the inner-palace way.

Then the ministers of great Ayutthaya led the envoys from victorious Kaiyaket into the shining royal hall.

When they arrived, they bowed at the feet of the radiant royal lord, presented the three envoys, raised joined hands, and read the letter.

The letter said: "Thao Kaiyaket bows at the feet of the lord, mighty scion of the Hari line, crown of Dvaravati. Because Your Majesty's power is famous through heaven, and because you have a royal son of excellent splendor whose power surpasses the earth, I rejoice greatly. I have nothing else worthy to offer at the lotus feet of the discus-bearing Hari line. Therefore I send my beloved royal daughter, excellent in beauty and auspicious marks, to be a servant beneath the feet of the royal son. May the righteous king's power protect her head until the day of death."

Kaiyakesi Enters Ayutthaya

[Rai]

Then the solar-line lord of Narai's house learned the letter and spoke to the envoys with joy: "Thao Kaiyaket, lord of the earth, has given his beautiful daughter to my son so that they may share life hereafter. Is that king who holds his royal station happy and at ease? Are his ministers, people, and all the victorious city still flourishing in happy welfare? And you, who have come from his dwelling through harsh forest roads: have the troops lacked anything?"

Then the well-mannered envoys bowed their heads and replied: "The lord who holds the city enjoys happiness beneath the great white parasol. His royal line prospers in well-being. Ministers, Brahmins, elders, and people all rely on the dust beneath his feet. As for your servants who came through harsh roads, Your Majesty's power covered our heads. No sickness or danger harmed us; we had only happiness at every time."

Then lord Atchaban heard the three envoys and was very pleased. He gave rewards, arranging them according to rank. When this was finished, the lord of the Hari line turned toward the victorious palace.

Then the royal ladies invited the beloved princess to enter and attend the king.

Then beautiful Nang Kaiyakesi walked gracefully, while a crowd of women followed.

When she arrived, she bowed her head before the supreme lord, shy and overwhelmed as if she would lose consciousness.

Then the crown of Ayutthaya saw his daughter-in-law. She bore excellent auspicious marks and lovely radiance: beautiful face, body, softness, hands, eyes, ears, conduct, and golden skin. She was worthy in rank and worthy to share royal honor, so that fame would appear in all directions. The more he looked, the more compassion and gladness filled him. He gave her adorned royal garments suitable for a princess of a great city, and assigned her a bright jeweled palace with serving women, attendants, and eunuchs.

Then beautiful Nang Kaiyakesi received the royal garments with joy. She bowed her head to the king, crawled back from attendance before the crown of the world, and went gracefully to the adorned golden palace.

Atchaban Crowns Thotsarot

[Slow]

That evening, when the light of the sun had faded, brave lord Atchaban entered his sleeping chamber. He reflected with weariness on the body, on form, taste, and desire: "I am old. I have held royal fortune for sixty thousand years. Death stands at the beginning of all things; no one escapes the splendid lord of death. All this wealth and estate will not follow the body. My beloved son Thotsarot has power that makes the earth tremble. I shall give him the victorious city to rule, continuing the divine solar line."

Having thought this, he adorned himself in shining dress and walked out to the bright royal hall.

When he arrived, he sat on the jeweled throne and ordered the four astrologers: "Hurry and find a good auspicious day. I will entrust the city to my son, make him crown of Ayutthaya, and let him rule the districts and borderlands, continuing the glorious divine line. Ministers, mark the matter and hurry the arrangements."

Then the brave and wise astrologers received the command, took up their boards, set the calculations, and computed the measures. All four agreed. They raised joined hands and reported: "The auspicious victorious hour will be excellent nine days from now. It falls in the proper window; the planets move rightly through the cycle. Rahu is eleventh from the ascendant and reaches the place of the chief royal divinity."

Then the diligent great ministers gave notices according to the righteous king's command, arranging both the front and inner palace parties.

They prepared the palace, tied curtains with two golden-vine folds, arranged seats and bright carpets, and hung shining garlands. The white parasol was set above the throne, and lion skins were laid out. Water jars and conches for the five rivers were placed in proper order. Before the royal court they set up a five-tiered platform bright as heaven, with grand jeweled and golden parasols and all the lotus water-pipes.

When this was finished, they ordered the ritual officials to go to the Himmaphan forest and invite the righteous Phra Wasis and Phra Sawamit to come.

Then the brave ritual officials received the ministers' command and hurried to the hermit sages' hall.

When they arrived, they paid reverence to the two rishi teachers and reported: "The lord of earth will establish the royal rite, consecrating his royal son together with the three lovely young women and making him the crown of the city. We have come to invite the holy ascetics to walk there."

Then Phra Wasis and Phra Sawamit, the ascetics, heard words like the taste of nectar. They notified the bands of siddhas. Each wore bark cloth and wild ascetic garments. They left the leaf-halls and came together into the city.

When they arrived, they went up into the palace and took the seats prepared for rishis. They chanted the Vedic rite according to Brahma's scripture.

Then the crown of Ayutthaya, when dawn broke and the sun cleared the earth, ordered his beloved son and the three excellent young women to go cleanse and bathe their bodies in the jeweled bathing chamber.

Then the four solar-line royals received the command of their exalted father and came to the bathing water.

The attendants opened the golden lotus pipes, scattering sweet fragrant spray. They wore perfume mixed with flowers and distinct vine-patterned garments. The prince wore side panels set with jewels; the three women wore necklaces across their breasts. The prince wore chain ornaments, and the three women wore golden armlets. All wore rings, armlets, and bright jeweled crowns. Some wore garlands and ear ornaments, adorned with flowers. Beautiful was the prince, like a god floating down from the Tavatimsa heaven. Beautiful were the three chief wives, like women of the Tusita sky.

Then his father and mother looked on the royal son and daughters-in-law, each beautiful in a different way. The two sovereigns rejoiced as if they had gained wealth in heaven, and led the lovely royals away from the shining palace.

When they arrived, the royal garments were removed from the four royals and they were dressed in fine white cloth. The king took his son's hand, together with the young daughters-in-law, and led them up onto the adorned golden five-tiered platform. The royal father then commanded that the thousand streams be opened. Sweet divine fragrance flowed from the golden lotus nozzles like streams of heavenly water.

Then Phra Wasis the rishi and Phra Sawamit the sage, together with yogins, ascetics, and Brahmins, came out. Some held conches and some held ritual jars. They poured the muratha consecration water. Others recited Veda and gave blessings, all according to the Brahmanical science.

When the bathing consecration was complete, Thao Atchaban led the four royals up to the adorned golden palace.

He seated them on the jeweled throne beneath the bright white parasol, while the three chief young queens sat in their proper places.

Then the clothing attendants offered regalia garments and the five great royal insignia. The weapon keepers offered the eight weapons to the royal scion of the discus line. The ascetic-fathers offered Veluwan leaves, and the conches were blown until the earth resounded.

The auspicious time had come. The astrologers opened the rice offering. The victory gong sounded three times, and the noise of performance rose in tumult. The old priest lit candles and passed the mirror from left to right. It was received in order by the royal line, ministers, and attendants.

When it had gone seven rounds according to the science, the elder minister extinguished the spirit-candle. The old priest waved incense smoke and anointed the four royals with sandalwood powder.

Then the royal father entrusted heavenly sovereignty, the white parasol, and the jeweled crown. He gave the name Thao Thotsarot Suriyawong, continuing the bright line of Phra Narai. He blessed him: "May no sickness come near. May hostile fools and enemies fear your power in all directions. May you be refuge for the whole earth. May your life endure for one hundred thousand years."

Then Phra Wasis and Phra Sawamit, the rishis, when the royal rite was complete, gave blessings: "May you rule wealth and sovereignty in fullness, increasing happiness and joy." Having finished, the sages left Ayutthaya.

Then lord Atchaban, after entrusting the bright jeweled white parasol to his royal son, distributed jewels, rings, and hundreds of thousands of shining gold and silver pieces to the people according to ancient royal custom. He kept precepts, kept truth, and held the ten royal virtues as his substance, free of envy and common passion, steady in impartial wisdom and justice.

Atchaban Gives His Flesh for the Golden Deer

[Rai]

Possessed of power, Atchaban wished to go sightseeing among the trees in the pleasure garden. He adorned himself beautifully and walked out to the victorious royal hall.

When he arrived, he sat on the royal seat and ordered the great ministers: "Prepare the jeweled chariot. I will go to the flower garden."

Then the minister of rank received the command of the mighty king and came out from the royal hall.

[2 words, Samoe]

He levied bold fourfold troops in a pleasure-procession. The vanguard was five thousand skilled horsemen holding spears and bows. Next came three thousand great elephants arranged in pairs. After them came Malay volunteers and more than ten divisions of soldiers. Then came two thousand chariots, hands gripping shining bows. The bright jeweled royal chariot was prepared, and all officers and common soldiers waited for the king to depart.

Then the Hari-line lord who bore the bow, when dawn's color appeared, came down to bathe.

He opened the lotus water pipes, sending fragrant spray through the air. He put on perfume mixed with flowers, vine-patterned trousers, cloth with Garuda-vine borders, side panels carved with shining jewels, hanging panels, directional plates, and breast ornaments. A golden dragon chain crossed him, emerald armlets flashed, nine-crested rings shone, and his jeweled crown was circled with diamonds and ear ornaments. He wore great earrings and flowers at the ear, and grasped the bright jeweled sword. Beautiful like Indra himself, he walked to mount the royal chariot.

The emerald chariot was beautiful: the curved yoke soft and graceful, curling vines and jeweled beads set around the wheels, hubs and throne in worked gold. Its sides and panels were carved with bird and vine designs, five spires flashed with jewels, and the roof ornaments hung bright. It was harnessed to horses white as conch shell and swift as storm wind. High regalia stood in ordered ranks. It was splendid like the sun's chariot. The soldiers shouted; the music thundered; the earth shook. The charioteer waved the signal flag and hurried the army forward.

Now the tale will speak of Wanchorok the forest hunter. He set snares for the deer near the water pool at the edge of the forest. Then he sat hidden, watching the animals in the great wood. When he saw a herd of deer, he rejoiced and rushed out to drive them together.

When he arrived, he saw a golden deer caught in the snare, struggling and crying at the forest edge. The forest hunter rejoiced, tied the deer, and carried it away.

Then the solar-line lord who ruled the earth was riding in his victorious royal chariot. He saw the hunter carrying the bound golden deer. Compassion arose in him, and he commanded the soldiers to bring the hunter before him.

Then the brave police officer received the command, bowed farewell, and went to the forest hunter.

When he arrived, he explained: "The radiant divine-line king commands that you go attend the righteous lord."

Then the forest hunter heard and felt as if his life would end. Trembling, he ran with the minister.

He came before the royal chariot, sat down, bowed at the king's feet, and waited in fear to hear the royal command.

Then the lord of the imperial line spoke fair words: "Look, forest hunter. This golden deer of yours: will you kill its life, or what will you do with it? I wish to know the matter."

Then Wanchorok the forest hunter heard the royal command, bowed at the feet, and replied: "Your servant was born a hunter. I have no need of living animals. When I reach home I will kill it, hoping for meat to sustain my life."

Then lord Atchaban heard the fierce-hearted hunter and felt compassion beyond measure. With pity and kindness for living beings, he gave a solemn command: "I have always thought in my heart that I would give the gift of life. Now my wish is fulfilled. I will cut my own flesh and exchange it for the meat of your golden deer. Will you allow it? Speak."

Then the brave forest hunter heard the royal command, bowed, and answered: "Will Your Majesty keep the word you have spoken? Your servant will not oppose the lord of earth. It is the way of hunters. I do not choose between animal flesh and human flesh; whatever can be eaten is food. If Your Majesty will give flesh as a gift, let it be as the king's mercy decides."

Then the divine-line lord heard and said: "Look, brave hunter. I have spoken my word, and truth is firm. I do not cling to life. I will help the deer that is about to perish." Having spoken, he commanded the great ministers: "Bring the hunter's golden deer and weigh it before our eyes. Whatever its whole body weighs, I will cut this flesh of mine and give it to the hunter as a gift in place of the deer's meat, according to the truth of my word."

Then the four great ministers received the command and lifted the deer onto the scale as ordered.

When it was finished, they bowed at the lotus feet and reported to the supreme lord: "It weighs half a weight-mark, flesh and bone together."

Then the lord of the Hari line untied the bonds from the golden deer's body. He poured the dakshina water, letting it fall as witness. "May you prosper in welfare." Having spoken, the king released it.

When this was done, he grasped the sword and proclaimed to all the gods, great and small: "By the power of my saving this creature, I will cut flesh for the hunter in place of the flesh of this golden deer whose life was about to end. By the power of the supreme merit I make as this gift within my body, may no pain or bodily suffering arise." Having spoken, the lord of the three worlds cut over his whole body.

There was no distress in the royal body. The king had his flesh weighed until it equaled the deer's meat, and gave it to the hunter in exchange.

When all the flesh in his body was gone, he could no longer sustain the body. He ascended to the heavenly realm, to the Tusita heaven.

Now the tale will speak of radiant Phra Isuan. His seat softened and burned like fire. Phra Suli looked with the divine eye and saw Thao Atchaban of the solar line, descendant of the lord of Hari, cutting his flesh in place of the deer's meat until life and breath ended. Seeing him on the jeweled chariot, Phra Suli felt deep joy and gladness, praised the perfection of his merit, and led his attendants flying down.

When he reached the king's royal chariot, he lifted up the supreme lord's body and flew through the clouds to great Mount Kailasa.

Thotsarot Goes to the Garden

Then radiant Thao Thotsarot, when his father the lord of earth had died, governed the city and sustained the world. The districts and borderlands were secure; his power and fame shone like the sun. Brahmins, subjects, and people were established in happiness and delight because he held the ten royal virtues like a jeweled parasol above his head. Kings prepared golden flowers, shining silver, and gold, and offered them at his feet every year without fail. He bowed and accepted their reverence. He was surrounded by palace women, lovely in skin and form like divine maidens, slender and graceful, serving the lord of earth every day.

Another division had yellow banners and held spear-blades, wearing striped coats and trousers. They prepared both the royal chariot and attendant chariots; every division waited for the king to depart.

The king wore golden dragon bracelets and a jeweled crown with gold work and ear ornaments. The queens wore earrings, flowers at the ear, and radiant nine-gem crowns. The four of them were lovely in beauty as they walked to mount the victorious chariot.

Beautiful was the sightseeing chariot, floating and gleaming with emerald surface. Its curved yoke bent gracefully; its tiers and finials were all blue jewels. The wheels were inlaid and its hubs finished with pearl designs. Garudas gripped nagas in the carved vines. It was harnessed to four horses swift as wind. The chariot driver hurried it with graceful movement; rows of banners snapped; golden jeweled light shone; white parasols, flywhisks, and tiered regalia stood in ranks. The drums thundered in loud rhythm; the forest slopes rang pleasantly; flutes answered curved trumpets; the troops moved in orderly rows.

The king picked sattabut and phutthachat flowers for the three beloved ladies. Turning and winding, they viewed the flowers, and the lord of heaven and earth was delighted.
