This is the one-hundredth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Nilaphat's deception of Vaiyatal, Vaiyatal's death, the report of Vaiyatal and Phetra's deaths to Cakkrawat, Cakkrawat's renewed battle and retreat, his farewell to Watchanisut and the Maliwan women, and his ominous final march from the city.

Translation

Vaiyatal Dies and Cakkrawat Makes His Last March

Then Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha heard and did not suspect the matter. He answered at once: "Yes, that one monkey of a hundred wickednesses, and the monkey whose body is yaksha-shaped, crept down into my city. I would have killed them, but they fled upward in time. Now I will march out to fight and destroy the deluded humans and monkeys, leaving not one alive by my terrible power. It is good you met me. If you linger, they may catch you. Do not be anxious or troubled. Hurry and come with me."

Then Nilaphat, strong and mighty, saw that Thao Vaiyatal the kumbhanda did not understand the trick, and he was glad. He reported: "I know the affairs in the pavilion in full detail. The human lord of the army has no counselor or heart-companion except Nilaphat alone, the tusk of his great war soldiers. If he is killed, the forest-monkeys will scatter. As for the yakshas of Lanka whom Phiphek drafted into the army, they eat tears without ceasing and have no loyalty. Your Majesty has shown mercy and kindness, a grace above my head. But I am hungry, panting, and worn beyond measure, and cannot keep following Your Majesty on foot."

Then battle-wise Thao Vaiyatal, not seeing the monkey's deception, smiled and answered: "What of Nilaphat? I will bind him and bring him here. Do not fear the forest-monkey's power. Come and watch for sport with your own eyes. Since you are hungry, panting, and weak, climb onto the back of the chariot. Do not delay. I will hurry to kill the enemies."

Then the son of Phra Kal, victorious and wise, rejoiced because it matched his wish. Pretending not to reveal the trick, he rose, staggered as if unable to walk straight, fell down, gave a deep sigh, then hauled himself onto the back of the victorious chariot, intending to destroy the asura.

Then Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha ordered the splendid royal chariot driven along the forest road.

Then the son of Phra Kal, skilled in war, riding on the back of the splendid chariot, thought through his plan: "Today that Vaiyatal yaksha will lose his life." Having thought this, he gathered his spirit and recited powerful spells.

He changed back into monkey form, towering high, with eight arms and four faces, brandishing the mighty diamond trident. He cried: "Hey, Vaiyatal the kumbhanda. I am Nilaphat, soldier of splendid Phra Chakra. Now righteous Bharata has sent me to cut off your crowned head. I saw you were proud and stupid, unable to understand war-tricks." Having spoken, he rushed in and kicked swiftly, and the victorious chariot broke apart in ruin.

Then Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha fell to the ground, seized the palm-wood club, sprang up, and roared: "Hey, hey, animal-born one. You boasted of courage and went down into the underworld, yet feared losing your life and fled back up. You used deceit to this degree, and I, honest and merciful, thought you were a yaksha. Do not act arrogant. I do not fear your power. What is a hairy-faced creature to me? Even your master could not withstand my club. I will slaughter the whole victorious army and leave not one life alive."

Then strong, mighty Nilaphat clapped his hands and mocked the kumbhanda: "Hey, deluded evil one. The fruit of your actions has reached death. A ghost has entered the yaksha's body and made you see evil as good, so you speak twisted words. The two mighty lords are beyond compare in all ten directions. Do not be proud enough to fight the younger brother of the lord of the discus. Even I, only a soldier, can destroy you and end your life. Your whole fourfold army will die with you."

Then splendid Thao Vaiyatal heard, grew furious, and ground his teeth. The kumbhanda cried in answer: "Bah, vile-born one. I will slice your flesh." Having spoken, he ordered the great army: "Seize that forest monkey."

Then the mighty asura troops received the demon king's command and surrounded the monkey together to seize him.

Then the divine Wind-born one's grandson, who had followed secretly in the forest, saw Nilaphat enter battle. He brandished the excellent mace-weapon, displayed fierce power until the earth shook, leapt and kicked forward, and struck the great army from the flank.

The two brave and skillful officers struck in the middle of the yaksha army. Heads and bodies were cut off everywhere, and the asuras broke in ruin, senseless.

Then Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha saw the two enemy kings striking his army so that it broke and died scattered. Angry, grinding his teeth, he stamped his foot until the earth shook and trembled, brandished the palm-wood club swiftly, and charged into battle.

Then the two soldiers of splendid Phra Narai received, guarded, and parried in confusion, surrounding and seizing the asura. The son of Phra Kal leapt to step on his left knee; the Wind-born one's grandson leapt to step on his right knee. They turned and grappled back and forth, each brave in battle.

Then Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha, one against two enemies, fought without lowering his hands. His right foot stepped on Asuraphat's knee, and his left on battle-wise Nilaphat's knee. The three, each with fierce power, stabbed, struck, and hacked in confusion.

Then the two victorious great soldiers received, guarded, and parried swiftly, leaping and rushing in.

The son of Phra Kal seized the yaksha's palm-wood club. Asuraphat rushed in and kicked with his foot, striking the asura many times.

Then Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha had lost the weapon paired with his life, and his heart sank in fear. Then pride rose in him; he would not fear death. Empty-handed, grinding his teeth, he leapt forward, snatching and struggling to regain the palm-wood club.

Then the two wise and brave officers each fought the demon lord, turning and feinting around him. Nilaphat struck him so that he fell by bold, mighty force. Powerful Asuraphat stepped on the asura's chest at once and struck with the victorious diamond mace. The son of Phra Kal battered him with the yaksha's club, then thrust repeatedly with the trident until the asura's life ended.

When they had finished destroying the wicked raph, the two strong and mighty officers cut off the kumbhanda's crowned head and came together into the forest.

When they reached Mayura Mountain with the battle-wise Angkhot army, the three officers rejoiced steadily and went into the pavilion.

They bowed their heads and reported to the solar-line king, Narai's younger brother, offering the two asura heads in the middle of the army.

Then radiant Bharata saw the two asura heads and rejoiced because it matched his thought. His face shone like the moon, and he gave royal command: "You three have power, wisdom, and thought equal to one another. It was not wasted that you are soldiers of the splendid Avatara. Your merit in service is beyond telling. May your splendid power shine so that none in the ten directions can withstand it." Having spoken, he went into the golden pavilion.

Then the remaining soldiers of Vaiyatal the yaksha saw their lord die and hurried to Maliwan city.

When they reached the palace gate, the yaksha scouts and troops went up at once to attend in the shining royal hall.

They bowed their heads to the supreme lord of royal power and reported: "Your life-friend went to establish ascetic rite-work in the underworld. Before even one night had passed, two brave monkeys followed him down to fight, destroyed the rite, and came back up. They waited by the head of the road, near the narrow pass by the forested mountain, and used a deceitful trick to kill your friend. On Phetra's side, he went to hold the field, and he too died with all his troops, none left." They explained everything in detail according to all they had seen.

Then brave-hearted Thao Cakkrawat learned that Phetra had lost his life and that Thao Vaiyatal, his beloved friend, was dead. Shock struck him as if someone had cut off his four heads with a discus. The yaksha king sat stunned and silent, tears brimming in his eyes, unable to speak. He left the bright jeweled throne and went into the shining palace.

He lowered himself onto the couch, raised his hand across his face, and thought of the royal enemies who this time had brought immeasurable damage.

[Slow Lament]

"Alas, wasted is my power. My courage is famous through the ten directions, and my authority subdued the whole universe, yet have I come to be defeated by those wretched fools? My three sons went out to fight and died by the enemy's arrow-light. I raised the yaksha army and attacked, but gained no victory. So I sent to invite my friend, hoping he would help subdue them. Was it right that he too should die at the hands of wicked forest-monkeys? My heart sees no counselor left, no one to rely on, as if I were swimming in a sea to the farthest horizon. I rose and sat again and again until dawn light shone. Then courage arose in the asura's heart: I am a noble male. If I shrink before the enemies, the ten directions will despise me. Tomorrow I will march out to win victory and kill them so their lives end."

Having thought this, he dressed in shining pearl ornaments, left the splendid jeweled chamber, and went out to the royal hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the white parasol's light. With the kumbhanda ministers crouching in attendance everywhere, he gave royal command to the great demon ministers: "Arrange the great army. I will go subdue the enemies."

Then Supinsan, the yaksha minister, received the earth-lord's command, raised joined hands in homage, and went out.

He chose battle-skilled soldiers, all fierce and brave. One division held matchlock guns, with knives tucked at their sides and shot-belts fastened. One division held golden-tipped weapons, officers and soldiers all wearing daggers. One division held bows, their arrows tipped with poison. Horses and elephants stood in loud confusion. Each displayed power and strength and was set by direction of march.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha, when the army arrangement was complete, came to bathe in the water.

He entered the bathing place and washed his body. Fragrant water spread sweet scent everywhere. His lower cloth was set with dark-blue gems; his red garment bore rice-offering patterns. Fluttering and side panels were adorned with yellow gems; his upper robe had fine gold-work. Direction-plates, chest ornaments, engraved patterns, chains of diamond melon-seed gems, serpent-form bracelets and armlets, and bright emerald rings adorned him. His four heads wore crowns and flower-garlands with shining earrings and ear-pieces. His eight hands held the eight weapons, complete for victorious war, and he brandished them, displaying battle-power as he walked to mount the royal chariot.

O royal jeweled chariot: its wheels and rims were all emerald. The raised yoke was soft and graceful; tiered panels and images surrounded the floating throne. Golden crests, mirrorwork, pillar-panels, and hanging pavilion-scrolls gleamed. Its four faces flashed with gems, high and bright like the moon's mansion. Royal lions were harnessed to it; Lothan drove swiftly like a turning discus. High insignia, whisks, parasols blocking the sun, and drums were complete. Pipes, gongs, and drums joined the shouting in tumult. Dust darkened the sky as the troops hurried along.

When he arrived, he halted the fourfold army and set the great formation in ranks along the forest line, waiting to win victory over the enemy.

Then Bharata, splendid solar-line lord, sat on the bright jeweled couch in the shining golden pavilion, his form beautiful, his face bright as the moon. By the power of Narai's younger brother, he sat among the soldiers, consulting on how to subdue the age's disorder and make all lands cool and happy. Then he heard the asura voices shouting until the forest rang.

He asked Thao Thotsakhiriwong, chief yaksha astrologer: "The army that has marched today: which asura is it?"

Then thoughtful Phiphek received the mighty lord's command and read the time-sign. Seeing clearly, he bowed and reported to the solar-line king: "The army that has marched out is Cakkrawat the kumbhanda."

Then Bharata, heavenly human bright as the sky, heard the brother of Thotsakan and gave royal command: "Listen, son of the Sun. Arrange the brave soldiers. I will march out to fight and destroy the enemy kings."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, splendid monkey, received the mighty lord's command, raised joined hands in homage, and went out.

He arranged a brave eagle-formation. The grandson of the Wind-born one was the head and wings. Nilek and Nilakhan were the two eyes. Pingkhala the monkey was the beak. Chomphuphan was the neck. The son of Phra Kal was the crest. Mighty Angkhot and Nilrat were the two wings opposing the enemy. Brave soldiers Surasen and Surakan were the two feet. The royal center was the eagle's body, and Nilanon the monkey was the tail. Yakshas and monkeys stood alternately as claws and feathers, all brandishing weapons and intending to meet the asuras.

Then solar-line Bharata invited his splendid younger brother to come to the bathing place.

[Thon]

They opened the conduits of divine Anotatta water, and the two royal lords bathed. They rubbed on royal perfumes. Their lower garments had swan-vine designs in alternating work; their garments were different shades of purple and young leaf, with raised braided gold. Fluttering and side panels had curved patterns; upper garments showed floating golden-vine disks. Direction-plates, jeweled waist ornaments, shining chains like fireflies, bracelets set with gems, armlets shaped like interlaced kilen, great battle-rings, crystal crowns, ruby ear ornaments, and diamond flowers adorned them. Beautiful in body and costume, shining against yellow skin, they held arrows, wore city-worthy swords, and walked one after another to mount the chariot.

[Thon]

O golden chariot: nine tiers of gleaming gems adorned it. It stood high and lovely with three soft crests, its wheels decorated with jewels. Around the throne were panels of images, Brahma-arrow pillar-bases, pavilions, scrollwork, and layered gems. Four water-lily-colored horses were harnessed to it. Shatrughna sat bowing with joined hands. The charioteer drove swiftly as wind. High insignia, parasols, victory flags, pipes, gongs, drums, and earth-shaking soldiers' shouts filled the road as the victorious chariot hurried on.

Then Thao Cakkrawat, skilled in war, stood in his chariot in the middle of the army and saw the monkey army march out. He gave royal command: "Hey, demon ministers. Drive the great army together into battle against the forest-monkeys."

Then Kumpin, great commander of the vanguard, received the mighty lord's command and drove the troops forward to attack.

Left wing and right wing pressed from both sides, shouting in loud uproar. They hurled weapons in confusion, and the asuras came on in waves.

Then brave-hearted, mighty Nilaphat split his force to meet the asuras and struck them together.

[2 words]

The monkeys snatched the yakshas' weapons, broke them boldly, charged and chased, turning swiftly to stab and cut until the demon soldiers died by their power.

Then Kumpin, commander of the yaksha vanguard, saw the soldiers broken and dying senseless. Angry as final fire, grinding teeth and jaws, he stamped his foot and displayed power until the earth shook. Brandishing his club and grinding his teeth, the kumbhanda rushed into battle.

Then the son of Phra Kal, battle-wise, saw the yaksha striking the monkey troops. Furious, he displayed power, his right hand swinging the trident like a turning discus, intending to destroy the yaksha's life, and charged into battle.

He seized both feet with brave power and smashed him down upon the earth. The demon lord's life ended.

[2 words, Cherd, Lament]

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha saw Kumpin the asura die by the forest-monkey's power. Furious, grinding his teeth and stamping until all trembled, he brandished weapons like flames and drove his chariot in to chase the monkeys.

Then fierce, battle-wise Nilaphat leapt forward by power and seized the crest of the asura's chariot.

He snatched and dragged it by the monkey's mighty strength, smashing it onto the earth. The lions and charioteer were destroyed.

Then brave-hearted Thao Cakkrawat fell to the ground. The demon lord sprang up swiftly, angry, grinding his teeth, and stamping until all shook. He seized his victorious bow and shot by the force of his power.

The arrows became a thousand shafts filling the sky with roaring sound. They struck the monkey army, and lives ended everywhere.

Then solar-line Bharata saw Cakkrawat the asura shoot and destroy the monkey army, leaving them wounded and dead everywhere. He drew the royal Phlai Wat arrow, set it on the string, drew with power, and the younger brother of the four-armed lord released it.

Its sound was like storm-wind. It shattered the demon arrows, unable to endure, and the two royal brothers descended from the victorious chariot to chase and fight the asura.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha fought alone, brave and bold, striking, dodging, and turning back and forth. Each side retreated and chased in confusion; each watched and pressed to kill, turning and changing stances in turmoil.

Then the two younger brothers of splendid Narai rushed in boldly and seized the kumbhanda by power. Bharata stepped on the yaksha's right knee and gripped his head to wrench it back. His younger brother followed and struck, hitting the asura's body so that he staggered.

The two lords each drew a mighty arrow whose power shook the earth, set them on the strings swiftly, and released them by strength.

The arrows chased and destroyed the kumbhanda army with thunderous sound through the ten directions. The monkeys who had died came back to life at once.

Then the four-faced yaksha king saw the humans shoot the attacking arrows and seized the jeweled discus, hurling it away.

[2 words, Cherd]

Its sound was like thunder; all trembled and shook. Darkness covered the rising sun, and no place could be seen.

Then solar-line Bharata saw darkness over the whole world and was deeply puzzled. He took the Chandra-Aditya arrow, whose power subdues all three worlds, set it on the string to destroy the yaksha weapon, and the younger brother of Hari released it.

It destroyed the discus, breaking it to pieces at once. The earth shook and trembled. It struck the lord of great Maliwan and covered his whole body with arrows.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha was fixed by arrows as if his life would end. With eight hands he pulled, dragged, and strained, but they would not come loose and only held more tightly. Forcing his heart and grinding his teeth, the kumbhanda recited powerful spells.

When he had completed three recitations, he blew downward and the arrows slipped from the yaksha's body. But pain racked his whole body; the asura was fearful and shaken. His face turned pale, and he could hardly hold himself upright. His weapons for victory were finished, as were his troops and soldiers. He thought: "These humans are capable, bold, and brave in battle. My own power is exhausted; I am near death. I must return to the splendid city palace and command the women. Tomorrow I will march again to fight." Having thought this, just as sunset bent behind the mountain, he kicked upward into the sky and returned to Maliwan city.

Then splendid solar-line Bharata no longer saw the kumbhanda king and gave command, asking: "Listen, Phiphek the asura. I am uncertain. Cakkrawat was struck by the victorious arrows; why did he vanish before our eyes?"

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha bowed his head and answered the command: "That vile asura was struck in battle by Your Majesty's arrows and could not think to oppose your strength. He flew away through the sky and returned to his city."

Then radiant Bharata heard Phiphek the asura. The lord mounted the victorious chariot and ordered the army withdrawn. The signal flags were waved, the shouts thundered through sixteen realms, and they returned to the pavilion.

[4 words, Cherd]

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha, flying while thinking, was grieved and shaken. "Alas, wasted is my shining power. No one in the ten directions could withstand me. I have four faces, eight terrible hands, and all divine weapons. My sons and friend were powerful; my fourfold army beyond counting. Was it right that all should be defeated by two-handed humans?" Lamenting, he hurried through bright moonlight, reached the city, descended from the sky, and went up into the shining palace.

Then Queen Watchanisut, the royal daughter, the consorts, and the inner women glanced and saw the yaksha king, his face pale and darkened, blood all over his body. Startled, they ran out in confusion.

When they reached him, the women supported him at left and right and led him to the bright jeweled couch. Some removed the royal ornaments from the yaksha king's body; some bathed him with fragrant water, fanning and waving fans in confusion. The ladies-in-waiting, elder attendants, and all the solar-line household great and small filled the inner palace in disorder, with no place left clear.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha saw his beloved wife, his royal daughter, and the asura women attendants. Concern and love bound his heart. He grieved at the thought of dying apart from them, stood stunned and silent, tears brimming in his eyes. Seeing the chief queen's face, he sighed again and again. After a time he spoke gently: "Listen, beloved jewel. I took the fourfold army to match strength with the enemies. Horses, chariots, elephants, soldiers, and ministers beyond count were lost. My own body was struck by poison arrows and hurt as if life would end. I have come in hoping to speak my last words to you, dear young one, and to my young royal daughter. Noble lady, live carefully and well."

Then Queen Watchanisut and the royal daughter heard the command and were shocked as if someone had cut their heads from their necks. The two women embraced his feet and lamented in grief.

[Lament]

"Alas, lord above our heads. Your grace used to shade us like a parasol, cooling the whole land of Maliwan. Is it right that Your Majesty should go away? This came from listening to Thotsaphin; then the thorn of a great enemy war arose and brought distress to the whole city. May Your wise Majesty stop the war for victory, make peace in royal friendship, and let there be no enmity between you. Then you may remain to enjoy wealth, happiness, and all pleasures with the solar-line family under great enduring honor. Listen to your servant, mighty lord. It is not right to risk your life." Speaking so, they struck their breasts, sobbed, and wept in sorrow.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha heard the women lament and grief doubled in his heart. Compassion for their words burned in him like fire in dry wood. Tears brimmed in the king's eyes; he sighed and gave command: "That I should bend and conciliate the enemies, as you say, is now impossible, dear jewel. Where could I keep face? I would be ashamed before gods and powerful asuras; all ten directions would despise me. I am a noble male. Why cling to life? Even if my life ends, I will preserve honor and make it known beneath the sky. You, the royal daughter, the consorts, and attendants, live in lasting auspiciousness. Do not be troubled by grief or separation. Consult together in all things, without delusion or rivalry."

Then beloved Watchanisut, the royal daughter, and the many lovely women heard the sweet words and clung to his feet. Their minds went senseless, and the queen pleaded in lament: "Alas, lord above our heads, peerless in the world. You used to shade and protect us from danger, never letting anything touch us. From now on, your servants at your feet will be anxious and burning like consuming fire. What used to be happiness will become torment and pain." Lamenting, the women rolled at the yaksha king's feet, each overcome with grief as if life would end.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha saw the women weeping in sorrow, and the asura's heart sank. Love clung to his mind like poison-guns lodged in the breast and unable to be drawn out. He suffered immeasurably in longing for the women. He raised his hand to stroke the queen's back and looked at his beloved daughter's face, tears brimming as if his life would end.

When the sun shone bright and gold light spread, he left the glittering jeweled chamber and went out to the victorious royal hall.

He lowered himself onto the throne and commanded the great ministers: "Arrange the great army. I will go to war with the enemy."

Then Thinsun, the yaksha minister, received the earth-lord's command, raised joined hands in homage, and went out.

He conscripted horses, chariots, elephants, soldiers, and civilians all together, calling the army rolls and dragging men in haste and confusion. Unit officers inspected, beat, and seized them: this man caught, that man missing. Some dragged sons, wives, and mothers-in-law to hand over to the officers in sequence. Among the yaksha soldiers, not one volunteered. Forced by need and fear of the kumbhanda king, they entered the army beyond counting, not steady even when equipped with weapons. They sat sighing deeply and showing their teeth, each sharing misery with the others.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha left the splendid jeweled couch and came to the bathing place.

He bathed and refreshed his body, wearing perfume fragrant everywhere. His lower garment had flying-swan vine designs and naga-form borders intertwined. His outer cloth was young-leaf colored with raised gold; fluttering and side panels had jeweled disks. His upper garment bore golden vines; diamond-scale armor was bordered with rubies. Direction-plates, crystal chest ornaments, three battle-chains, dragon-form bracelets and armlets, and lovely shining diamond rings adorned him. His four heads wore great jeweled crowns with brilliant ear ornaments. He grasped the eight weapons in all eight hands and walked to find his beloved wife.

He lowered himself to sit with the chief queen, grieving as if his heart were broken. Thinking with longing and deep attachment, the yaksha king embraced her to his breast and spoke gently: "Listen, beloved jewel. Today I will die. Dear one, live carefully. Whatever negligence or fault has offended you in my thought, body, or speech, let there be no hostile karma between us. Then beloved Queen Watchanisut heard her husband speak as if his life would end. She bowed at the yaksha king's lotus feet, struck her breast in grief, and lamented: "Alas, crown of my head, I have never been far from your feet. Is it right that you leave me here to endure sorrow and pain? The wicked enemies are unbearable even to look at; I will suffer and ache every hour." The lady spoke while weeping in sorrow.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha saw his beloved wife lamenting, and his attachment grew beyond thought. Tears brimmed in his eyes, and he gave royal command: "Everyone born with form and life reaches Brahma's writing; none is exempt. Do not grieve and burn in sorrow." Having spoken, he went straight to the jeweled landing.

Then Queen Watchanisut, the royal daughter, the many consorts and attendants all shed tears, suffering and grieving as if their lives would end, and ran after him.

When they reached him, the women embraced his left and right feet, pressed their faces down, wept, and pleaded with the asura king.

The chief queen said: "Alas, beloved lord, turn your face and look at your servant. You leave wife and child behind with no compassion or concern. Mighty lord, kill me first, then march the army out of the city." The attendants said: "Alas, crown of our heads, your majesty has long shaded us. You raised and cared for all of us; your grace is higher than sky and earth. If we erred, you corrected and taught us, making us live in lasting happiness. Jewels, silver, gold, and wealth you gave to everyone. Alas, now your light will vanish like the moon losing all radiance. We pity the royal daughter, young grain-soul just beginning to grow; she will weep for her father. Mother and child will suffer in enemy hands. We attendants will lose happiness; music will fall silent, and all the city will cry. From now on we have no refuge equal to Your Majesty." Lamenting, they were overcome by grief as if life would end.

Then splendid Thao Cakkrawat saw his beloved wife and attendants lamenting, and his heart sank. Love made it almost impossible to leave. He held the heavenly women in his arms and comforted them with words: "Do not grieve, beloved jewel. My karma has come, and I must take leave. Dear one, live and care for one another." Having given this command, he walked away from the heavenly women and went to mount the shining golden chariot.

He ordered the great army to move. The hundred thousand brave soldiers marched; the vanguard waved three-tailed flags and turned the army along the road.

When he left the royal palace, he looked left and right, studying the city, joyful like the heaven of Dusadi. He grieved for the three palaces, all beautiful with interwoven gems, where he had lived happily each night with the inner women. Now he would look on the jeweled palace where he had lived for the last time; he grieved for the bright golden chambers fragrant with perfume. He had listened to the singing voices of court women, alluring and beloved, and enjoyed happiness there always. Alas, now he would depart. Seeing the queen's palace, shining with jeweled light, he grew still more sorrowful and sighed in deep longing. "Alas, all things must be parted from; this parting breaks the breast. I pity my beloved daughter, who will no longer see her father's face. I grieve for the women of the harem whom I loved. From this time they will vanish from my sight, and the thought is pitiful. Alas, Maliwan, royal city, grand beyond compare, abundant in wealth and happiness, crowded with men and women: it will become lonely, empty, and cold as a cemetery. I pity the people; they will eat only tears." The more he thought, the more his grief and longing deepened. When he came outside the gate, the kumbhanda's spirit trembled. It seemed as if he were alone with no fourfold army. Every direction was dark with smoke; day seemed turning into night. The chariot wheels did not thunder; the army's shouting sounded like weeping. Vultures and crows flew around, pecking and striking, and bad omens fell before the chariot. Trees by the road, though windless, broke and fell in sorrow. All the royal insignia of rank appeared to blaze like flame. The ranks of flags did not flutter. Seeing these omens, his heart sank; stunned, he reached the battlefield.
