This is the one-hundred-first สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Cakkrawat's final battle with Bharata and Shatrughna, his recognition of the Narai lineage, his death and last requests, the divine celebration, Watchanisut and Rattanamali coming to Bharata, Cakkrawat's funeral in Maliwan, and Bharata preparing to enter the city.

Translation

Cakkrawat Dies and Maliwan Submits

Then Bharata, solar-line archer, slept upon the splendid couch while the king turned the matter over in his mind: how to destroy the lord of Maliwan and end his life. The last watch passed, the moon bent past great Meru, jeweled roosters crowed loudly, and the cuckoos called in clear voices as if deliberately offering victory throughout Mayura Mountain.

When the sun brightened and golden light shone, he bathed, put on radiant ornaments, and went out before the pavilion.

He lowered himself onto the throne, with hundreds of thousands of ministers present, crouching everywhere like stars around the moon in the sky. Just then he heard shouting that shook the belly of Mayura Mountain like waves rising on the ocean shore. The king asked: "Listen, Phiphek the asura. Has Cakkrawat marched, or is it some other asura from Maliwan city?"

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha received the mighty lord's command and read the three-eyed time-sign. Seeing clearly, he bowed and reported to the king, Narai's younger brother: "The army that has marched out is Cakkrawat the demon lord. This hour foretells great evil for him; his life will end by Your victorious Majesty's power, and the war will be finished today."

Then radiant Bharata heard Phiphek's report and rejoiced. He gave royal command: "Listen, son of the Sun, mighty and brave. Arrange the great army. We will go kill the demon lord."

Then wise and brave Sukhrip bowed his head to receive the royal command, bowed at the lotus feet, and hurried out.

He arranged a great bowl-shaped battle formation. Four troop divisions, bold and skilled in war, filled the ground: the armies of the three cities, yakshas and monkeys together. Each had fierce power, able to scoop the sea dry, fly through the sky swiftly, and grind whatever place he entered into dust. A single splendid monkey could plunder the asura realm as he wished, lift Mount Meru and Trikut Mountain together, hold them on one palm, and travel through the air. All held every kind of weapon, rejoicing and war-proud, brandishing them like glittering fire. They stood in strange, crowded companies, filling the earth.

Then radiant solar-line Bharata invited the younger brother who shared his life to go bathe in the water.

Golden lotus water poured down like rain, and they wore sweet, fragrant perfumes. Their lower garments flashed with jewels and coral, with grand borders set in gems. The elder brother wore black cloth with dancing kinnara patterns; the younger wore young-leaf cloth with gold raised in pierced scrollwork. Each wore fluttering and side panels, shining diamond ornaments, jeweled armor, chest ornaments, gentle necklaces and chains, direction-plates, golden bracelets, ruby-set armlets, emerald rings, and jeweled crowns with ear ornaments. Each grasped a mighty arrow and wore a royal sword at the side, stately as great universal kings, and the two kings went one after another to mount the chariot.

O royal chariot: jeweled rims and hubs adorned it. The yoke was graceful and delicate; the tiered throne was all patterned gems. Coiled vines and paired images stood in rows, three tiers flashing with jewel light. Crestwork, mirror-panels, and Garuda-flying pavilion scrolls adorned it. Five summits rose high into the sky; golden lotuses and all the jeweled work shone like Indra's palace. Four proud horses were harnessed to it. The younger brother sat bowing with joined fingers. The charioteer drove swiftly; high insignia, golden parasols, pipes, gongs, and drums sounded together. The brave soldiers shouted in battle-pride until the three worlds shook, front flags leading as the army hurried onward.

When they reached the victorious battlefield and saw the yaksha army, Bharata ordered the jeweled chariot driven to the front of the demon lord's army.

He cried: "Hey, four-faced king. Do not be boastful, proud, and arrogant. Today your life will end by my arrow's skilled power. If you love your body and regret your life, recognize the yaksha's wrong. I, who sustain the earth, will spare the asura's life."

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha heard and grew furious. He answered: "Hey, vile-looking human. Do not boast and speak grossly. I have never bowed to anyone in heaven or underworld. Even if I lose my life, do not think I fear brave power. I too am counted a brave male and will destroy you without mercy." Having spoken, his four mouths roared command, the sound shaking all: "Hey, asura kumbhandas. Together, surround and seize the human."

Then the mighty asura troops heard the asura king's command and were terrified, their spirits gone, their bodies trembling and faces pale as ghosts. They ground their teeth as if to attack, but fired their guns noisily from far away. They lifted and brandished weapons in turmoil, shouting without coming close, baring teeth and roaring threats, then rolling their eyes and running back.

Then the brave monkey soldiers went in to fight all together, chasing and killing the demon army. They seized demons, broke necks and knees, tore chests and feet in confusion, and smashed some against the earth. The demon troops died senselessly.

Then Ritthisun, Ritthisak, Triphat, and Triphan, four asura commanders, saw the monkeys destroy the troops and grew furious in uproar. They swung clubs, displayed battle-power, and came to attack the forest-monkeys.

Then Nilaphat, Nilanon, Nilek, and victorious Nilakhan, great soldiers, saw the four yakshas attack the monkeys. Each shook with anger and eager hands, brandishing mighty swords and rushing in to face the asuras.

Then the four yaksha soldiers each displayed power and attacked fiercely. They struck left and right in turmoil, brandishing weapons and showing courage. Ritthisun leapt and seized the son of Phra Kal; Ritthisak attacked Nilanon; Triphat fought Nilakhan; and Triphan the kumbhanda fought Nilek by power. Eight officers met in battle, pressing and attacking without retreat, each brave and bold, striking and cutting back and forth.

Then the four mighty, brave-hearted monkeys broke through by strength and swiftly seized the asuras. The four officers stabbed the four asuras so that they fell in place and could not rise. They tore off arms and legs and threw them before the demon lord's victorious chariot.

Then the lord of royal Maliwan saw the four victorious monkeys kill his four soldiers. Grinding his teeth, stamping his foot, and intent on killing, he seized his powerful arrow, set it on the string, and shot swiftly.

Its sound was like storm-rain. The earth shook and trembled. It became jeweled swords flying out to destroy the monkey army.

Then radiant Bharata saw the arrow become swords and attack, striking the monkeys dead everywhere. He drew the Agni-Wat arrow, beautiful like his supreme elder brother, to destroy the asura weapon, and shot until the sixteen skies rang.

The sky darkened with heavy smoke. The arrow became storm-wind, destroyed the swords, and by its power shattered the victorious chariot to pieces.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha lost his chariot and grew angry as fire. He sprang up, brandished the trident, and hurled it.

Tridents filled the sky and fell like a great rain. They struck the forest-monkey army, who suffered and died piled together.

Then splendid solar-line Bharata saw Cakkrawat's tridents striking the monkey army like lightning bolts. He drew the royal Phlai Wat arrow, set it on the string, drew with battle-power, and the king released it.

The tridents were ground fine by its power, and the ten directions shook. The monkeys who had died received their lives back. The two lords descended from the royal chariot, their hands brandishing mighty arrows, and entered to match power with the asura.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha rushed alone into battle, close-locked, fleeing and chasing in confusion. With eight hands he guarded and parried weapons, turning like a revolving discus. Each side struck, received, and cut, locked together without lowering hands.

Then the two younger brothers of Narai, bearing arrows, pressed the attack in battle against the royal enemy. Bharata leapt and stepped on the shoulder; his younger brother stepped on the yaksha's knee. They struck Cakkrawat many times until he staggered from the place of combat.

Then the splendid eight-handed king grew angry, grinding his teeth, and the kumbhanda shot an arrow by power.

Its sound was like thunder. It became countless nagas, slithering, raising hoods, and spitting poison as if to destroy the life of the whole world.

Then solar-line Bharata saw Cakkrawat the asura shoot the terrible naga-arrow. He drew the mighty arrow whose power shook the earth, set it on the string, drew swiftly, and the king released it at once.

Its sound was like Meru collapsing. It turned into the lordly Garuda bird, seized and chewed the nagas, and destroyed them in place in an eye-blink.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha saw the human arrow become Garuda and destroy the nagas. Furious and trembling, grinding his teeth and displaying power, the demon lord brandished the splendid jeweled discus and hurled it straight ahead.

It blazed like the sun and became stones beyond counting. They fell on the forest-monkey army, killing them across the ground.

Then the two solar-line kings, skilled with the bow, saw Cakkrawat the asura's discus cause stones to fall. Each took an arrow, set it on the string, drew with raised hands, aimed to destroy the asura's life, and the two kings released them.

Shatrughna's arrow destroyed the jeweled discus; it broke and could not endure. The forest-monkey soldiers who had died were saved and lived. The Brahmastra roared, struck Cakkrawat the yaksha in the chest, cut his arms from his body, and he fell to the earth.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha, struck by the arrow yet not dead, looked carefully and saw the conch, discus, mace, and lotus of the four-armed lord emerging from the bodies of the two mighty kings. He realized they were of Phra Narai's lineage. Alarmed and grieving for his life, his pride vanished. He reported: "Your servant was heedless in body and has come to die in delusion this time. I did not know that Your Majesties were of the glorious Hari lineage. I dared arrogantly to fight and disturb the dust of your feet. All this comes from karma leading me to lose my embodied life. Let there be no hostility toward me, who am about to die."

Then the two splendid solar-line kings heard the kumbhanda ask pardon and felt mercy. They spoke gently: "Listen, Cakkrawat the yaksha. When we first marched to your city, we sent a letter explaining all that had happened before, but you would not listen. We who sustain the three worlds bear no grudge. Do not cling to life. Set your mind firmly instead and aim for heavenly wealth, great happiness, and auspicious peace."

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha heard the royal word, rejoiced, bowed his head, and reported.

[Lament]

One mouth said: "O mighty lord, my life will soon be extinguished. I entrust my solar-line family and kin beneath your feet hereafter. My chief queen, the many consorts and women, and my dear royal daughter: please foster them according to dharma." The second mouth said: "O lord, I offer all wealth throughout the territory, the whole city of Maliwan, joyful as Indra's city, and all fourfold army divisions, ministers, men and women, people and servants of the land. May they gain greater happiness and welfare." The third mouth said: "O mighty lord, be gracious. Do not let this corpse of mine roll in the middle of the earth to become food for wild beasts, crows, and vultures, rotting like an outcaste and bringing disgrace through the world." The fourth mouth said: "O lord of the earth, please report to the feet of lord Phra Narai that I bow farewell and go to Dusadi heaven." When the four mouths had finished entrusting and commanding, the yaksha's voice and strength ended. The arrow's poison burned through his whole body, and the asura's life ended.

Now the tale turns to the gods and heavenly women in heaven. Seeing the younger brother of the Garuda-bearing lord kill the kumbhanda, they rejoiced, leaned from jeweled windows, clapped, and laughed happily. Some scattered divine flower-garlands and fragrant mandara blossoms. Some sang with lutes and orchestras in every golden mansion, great and small. They raised victory-blessings for the younger brother of the Garuda-bearing lord. Uproar rang everywhere, shaking earth, sea, and the hell-fires.

Then the two solar-line kings, after killing the asura and receiving divine flowers from the gods, saw them lying thickly across the battlefield with sweet scent everywhere. They picked them up, admired and smelled them happily, as did all the soldiers. Monkeys ran in confusion, competing with the yakshas, each delighted and joking through the victorious army. Then Bharata ordered Phiphek the demon lord: "You are a senior man. Stay and send this corpse into Maliwan city." Having commanded, he walked beautifully as a heavenly king, mounted the shining jeweled chariot, and withdrew the army into the pavilion.

Then Cakkrawat's yaksha soldiers, hidden along the mountain-foot, saw the lord of Lanka's city still on the battlefield near the yaksha king's corpse, and came out from the forest to approach the kumbhanda.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet of splendid Thao Thotsakhiriwong and crouched in order, waiting for the command.

Then the younger brother of the ten-faced yaksha spoke: "Listen, Supinsan, minister. Go inside and report the matter to the chief queen: her royal husband has now ended his life. Tell her to hurry out to attend the feet of Narai's younger brother and ask for the kumbhanda's body to be brought into Maliwan city."

Then Supinsan, the yaksha minister, received the command, bowed farewell, and together they went into the city.

When he arrived, he bowed his head and reported to Queen Watchanisut: "The asura crowned lord took the army to fight, and now he has been struck by the humans' arrows and his embodied life has ended." He explained every matter clearly according to Phiphek the demon lord's command.

Then beloved Queen Watchanisut and the royal daughter learned the news and were shocked as if struck by serpent-poison, unable to see heaven or earth. Mother and child beat their breasts, wept aloud, and cried for the yaksha king.

[Lament]

"Alas, lord above our heads, ruler of the world, famous through all three realms, with eight arms, four heads, and four faces, bearing magnificent power. Gods, asuras, spirits, and adepts feared your power in every direction. Maliwan city was joyful as heaven, with diamond walls standing firm as Mount Sattaphan around great Meru, outer and inner moats and barriers, water-gates and fire-gates guarding it. You had ten million bold soldiers patrolling the heavenly roads, protecting it day and night, paired with Lanka city. Was it right that an enemy should still come, insult us, kill our kin, and bring Your Majesty too to death? Whom shall mother and child rely on now? From this time there is no happiness. I will endure grief and weeping." Lamenting, she collapsed unconscious in sorrow.

Then the lovely attendants each lamented for the asura, their voices filling the moon-palace. Seeing the chief royal lady and the beloved royal daughter in such grief that they lay senseless, they were alarmed and confused. They called elder attendants; some rubbed them with perfume, some sprinkled their bodies, some massaged their hands and feet, and some fanned them until they regained consciousness.

Then Supinsan, the yaksha minister, saw that the women had recovered awareness and bowed to report: "Lamenting for the mighty lord will not bring his life back. Everyone born in the three worlds must lose life likewise. The two human brothers, splendid royal-line kings, received the demon king's bowed homage. He offered his great sovereignty, entrusted the two royal ladies, the inner women, the soldiers and retainers, and then he died. I invite Your Majesty to go attend the two shining kings at Mayura Mountain and request the king's corpse to be brought in."

Then beloved Queen Watchanisut heard the wise minister and saw that everything was right. She gave royal command to the great ministers: "Arrange all things in readiness. We will go attend the righteous lord."

Then the diligent great ministers received the command, bowed, and hurried out.

They arranged the royal procession in ordered lines left and right, with jeweled chariots, golden palanquins, and golden flowers for offerings.

Then sorrowful Queen Watchanisut, the young royal daughter, and the many consorts and attendants walked together, beautiful as heavenly apsarases. They descended from the glittering jeweled palace and mounted the splendid golden palanquin.

She ordered the great army, the hundred thousand yaksha soldiers, to move out from Maliwan city and follow the forest road.

Then thoughtful Supinsan, when they came near, halted the royal procession and went to Phiphek the asura.

He bowed his head at the yaksha lord's lotus feet and reported: "I have led the queen and the royal daughter out, with auspicious offerings, the consorts and attendants left and right, according to Your Majesty's command that I, your servant, should come in."

Then thoughtful Phiphek heard and found it fitting, and he led him to the shining pavilion.

He bowed his head and reported to the radiant solar-line king: "Life of your servant, lord: now Supinsan the minister has brought Watchanisut, lovely queen of Cakkrawat the yaksha, with Rattanamali the daughter, and golden flowers as offerings. They have come to bow at the feet of the great royal-line lord. I ask leave for the two noble ladies to attend Your Majesty's lotus feet."

Then Bharata, solar-line archer, heard the younger brother of the twenty-handed king and spoke gently: "Listen, Supinsan the minister. Lead the yaksha queen and her daughter to the front of the victorious pavilion."

Then thoughtful Supinsan bowed his head, received the king's command, and hurried out at once.

He bowed with joined fingers and reported to fair Queen Watchanisut: "The royal command graciously permits Your Majesty to attend at the pavilion."

Then beloved Queen Watchanisut heard the wise minister and led her dear daughter, descending from the glittering jeweled palanquin. With all the women attendants, great and small, they walked gracefully into the shining pavilion.

When they arrived, they bowed at the feet of Narai's glorious younger brother and offered incense, candles, and flowers. The queen glanced sideways and saw the two mighty lords, wondrously beautiful like divine figures, slender and graceful in body, their complexions and features complementary. The more she looked, the more delight filled her eyes; her grief eased and she nearly forgot herself in wonder at the righteous lord. Looking at the elder brother, she forgot to look at the younger; looking at the younger, she forgot the elder. All the women secretly gazed at the kings, each overcome with longing and unable to meet their eyes directly. They bowed low at a distance, waiting for the king's command.

Then solar-line Bharata saw the two women and felt compassion and mercy. He spoke gently: "Listen, noble lady. Cakkrawat the asura, husband of Your Ladyship, was heedless and despised the lotus feet of discus-bearing Phra Narai. I had great mercy and hoped the yaksha lord would not lose his life, so I sent a fair letter to speak with him. He answered with vile arrogance and raised his army to fight, until solar-line kin, family, friends, and countless troops died. Only when his life was ending did the asura turn back in heart and know his wrong. He pleaded to entrust beloved child, beloved wife, and the lovely consorts to me. I who sustain the earth have mercy and hold no grudge."

Then Queen Watchanisut the yaksha heard and rejoiced as if heavenly nectar had been poured over her. The voice and words were sweet, cooling and soaking through her whole body. She bowed her head and answered: "Your Majesty's mercy is grace higher than heaven's radiance. This fair Rattanamali, my daughter and dear as my own heart, is now fatherless, grieving without refuge. I offer the chief lady to be beneath Your Majesty's feet. As for the body of the demon king lying dead in the forest, do not leave it pitiful there. Grant me leave to take it into the city."

Then radiant Bharata heard the lady's words and answered: "The lord Phra Narai sent me here because he desires nothing for himself. He wishes to sustain the three worlds and bring them abundant happiness. As for receiving the kumbhanda's body into royal Maliwan city, that is fitting work according to ancient custom."

Then lovely Queen Watchanisut heard the royal word and rejoiced beyond measure. She bowed her head, took leave of the feet of Narai's younger brother, and led her beautiful royal daughter out of the pavilion.

She mounted the jeweled and golden palanquin with attendants on left and right, while Supinsan the minister led the fair ladies onward.

When they reached the battlefield, they halted beside the mountain-foot, descended from the splendid jeweled palanquin, and mother and daughter walked in.

They passed through the asura and kumbhanda corpses lying dead in uncounted piles and felt shaken with pity. Then they saw the demon king fallen on the earth, his arms cut off, his life ended. Shocked as if someone had attacked them, the noble ladies ran in at once. The chief queen embraced the yaksha king's right foot; the royal daughter embraced his left foot. They burned with grief and separation as if their own lives would end, and the fair women lamented.

[Lament]

The queen said: "Alas, lord of the world, famous through heaven, fierce in power like final fire, crown of Maliwan city, enjoying immense wealth and happiness with the women. Is it right that you have gone to the sky-city?" The daughter said: "Alas, father. Your grace shaded my head; you raised me from childhood and never let anxiety trouble me. If I wished to see moon and stars in the sky, you brought me to see them. If I wished to see heaven, you brought me through every mansion." The mother said: "Alas, lord of the earth, you were heedless, arrogant, and proud, and fought the line of the Avatara; therefore your life has ended on the ground. From now on happiness will fade, and all of us will suffer grief; the whole asura realm will drink tears without ceasing." The daughter said: "Alas, mighty lord, when I think, my heart fails. My three elder brothers have all perished. To whom shall I turn for refuge? It would be better to die; living has no use." Speaking so, the two noble women sobbed as if consciousness would end.

Then the lovely attendants each suffered deep grief, striking their breasts and lamenting: "Alas, lord above our heads, we never thought your life would end. Your power was like final fire; all six heavens feared your might. You raised and cared for us with faithful mercy, so we lived cool and happy as with father and mother. If we erred in duty, you forgave, taught, and never left any woman attendant in distress. Is it right that you have left your servants and gone to heaven?" Lamenting, they grieved as if life would end.

Then all the ministers and soldiers, all the women and men who had come out, shed tears. They wandered across the battlefield, crying for the bodies of their kin, mixed and scattered everywhere, their faces senseless. Some lamented the demon king, others brothers, sisters, children, grandchildren, husbands, kin and clansmen who had died. The clamor rang in tumult; not one person was free of grief, as if the heart would break and no consciousness remained.

Then beloved Queen Watchanisut, after regaining consciousness, steadied her body and commanded the officers to bring the shining splendid urn and invite the asura king's body into the radiant jeweled chariot.

Then the ministers and generals great and small received the young lady's command and went to the demon king's body. They placed it in the golden jeweled urn, bright with pearls, invited it onto the splendid chariot, beautiful as a heavenly mansion, adorned with parasols, lines of flags left and right, and the loud music of gongs and drums, and escorted it thickly into the city.

When they reached the royal palace, the chief queen ordered her royal husband's body placed in the victory court. Then she commanded the officers, soldiers and civilians great and small, to hurry and prepare the fire-rite according to royal custom.

Then honored Supinsan bowed his head, received the fair lady's command, and went out to arrange the work in commotion.

Then Queen Watchanisut, the royal daughter, the consorts, and attendants took incense, candles, flowers, sweet sandalwood and aloe-wood, asked the demon king's forgiveness, and lit the fire together. Lutes, gongs, and drums sounded loudly, shaking all around; all entertainments and dancers performed in competition and uproar.

When the funeral of her husband was finished, the beloved chief queen became somewhat clear of grief. She commanded the wise minister: "Hurry out to attend the lord of royal Lanka. Bow and report to the younger brother of the Avatara, and ask what Your Majesty will command."

Then thoughtful Supinsan received the royal lady's command and hurried out to the pavilion.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet and reported to Phiphek the yaksha all matters from beginning to end concerning the cremation of the asura king.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha led Supinsan the minister into the presence of the righteous lord.

He bowed his head and reported to the splendid solar-line king: "The funeral of Cakkrawat the kumbhanda, lord of Maliwan city, is now completed. Mighty lord, grant favor. I invite Your Majesty to raise the army and enter the asura city. This will make Your Majesty's fame manifest beneath the feet of glorious Phra Narai until the end of sky and earth: that the king came to cleanse unrighteousness."

Then splendid solar-line Bharata heard the brother of Thotsakan, and the righteous king was pleased. He turned his face and gave command to Phraya Sukhrip, the great soldier: "Prepare all the troops. We will go see the asura city."

Then Phraya Waiwongsa, splendid monkey, received the mighty lord's command, raised joined hands in homage, and went out.

He arranged a diamond-garland procession. The shock soldiers marched first, each powerful, carrying red matchlocks. Next came the diamond-file troops carrying spears in their appointed escort positions. Next came troops with sharp swords, moving beside the bowmen. Next came the spear-bearers in orderly ranks. Next came monkey shock-fighters carrying shields, walking between golden-tipped weapons. Next came the four monkey police with bright swords. The eighteen crowned monkey chiefs walked around the victorious chariot. In the rear formation, the people of Lanka followed behind the chariot. They set the order in descending ranks and waited for the glorious king to proceed.

This Good Works translation was made from the Thai source text of บทละครเรื่องรามเกียรติ์, สมุดไทยเล่มที่ ๑๐๑, in the Vajirayana Digital Library edition. ถัดมาถือดาบคมแวง / เดินแซงเหล่าพวกเกาทัณฑ์
