This is the one-hundred-second สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Bharata and Shatrughna entering Maliwan, leaving for Ayutthaya despite the rains, the Mekhala-Ramasun storm episode, the army's halt in Lanka, Hanuman making the ocean road, the return to Ayutthaya, Bharata's report to Rama, and Rama's reward settlement for the campaign.

Bharata Enters Maliwan and Returns to Ayutthaya

Then Bharata, solar-line archer, and mighty Shatrughna walked to bathe in the water.

They ordered the jeweled lotus conduits opened. Sweet fragrant water poured out. They wore perfume mixed with flower-garlands. Their lower garments had Garuda-vine borders; each royal garment had a different color, striped with divine-youth figures. Fluttering and side panels were rose-gold; their upper robes shone with floating golden disks. Direction-plates, coral chest ornaments, emerald chains set with rubies, dragon-coiled golden armlets, and diamond rings in Garuda settings adorned them. Each wore a nine-gem crown, bright flowers and ear-pieces, and golden garlands with peacock patterns; grasping the arrow, they walked gracefully to mount the chariot.

O chariot, palace-chariot: jeweled coral rims adorned the wheels, with three graceful crests, tiered frames, and a floating throne. Reverent gods were carved in rows, Garudas seized nagas with hanging heads, and the five-spired jeweled pavilion shone like Waichayan palace. The noble younger brother sat in front, beautiful as a created god. Six sandal-colored, battle-wise horses were harnessed in three pairs. The charioteer urged them swiftly, gliding like a swan. High insignia, garlanded fly-whisks, gongs, drums, and curved trumpets sounded in uproar. The soldiers shouted until the world shook, the wheels thundered, and Supinsan led the proud troops into Maliwan city.

They turned and looked around the royal city, grand as Tavatimsa heaven. The walls seemed like Mount Sattaphan; moats and jeweled embankments ran in ordered lines. Watchtowers, women's galleries, forts, battlements, and bright flags surrounded it. Golden gateway doors shone, with great guns set in every embrasure. The roads were all paved with stone slabs; buildings stood packed and plentiful. Houses and shops were orderly and pleasing to the eye. Stables and elephant-and-chariot halls stood in rows, and the palace court was laid out for troop contests. Cool halls glittered with gold light. Palaces and residence ranges, storehouses and attendant halls stretched in lines. The three palaces were supremely beautiful, with jeweled floors standing high, four faces joyful as Waichayan, naga-bright pediments, five radiant summits, upturned lotuses, graceful golden figures, pearl-bright finials and coral jeweled roof crests. Seeing all this with delight, the king ordered the chariot driven onward.

Then thoughtful Supinsan, when they reached the victory court, halted the splendid royal chariot beside the jeweled and golden landing, bowed at the feet of the archer-lord, and invited the king to proceed into the shining palace.

Then radiant Bharata heard Supinsan the minister and invited his splendid younger brother. The two lords descended from the royal chariot, beautiful as sun and moon, and went up into the splendid great palace.

They lowered themselves onto the jeweled throne. The eighteen great soldiers bowed at their lotus feet inside the asura residence.

Then lovely Queen Watchanisut and the beautiful royal daughter learned that the kings had come to the palace and sat on the shining lion-throne. With the women attendants, they came together to attend the lord.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet of the two solar-line kings, crouched in order, and waited for the king's command.

Then radiant Bharata spoke the royal word: "Listen, queen of the demon king. We will raise the army back to victorious Ayutthaya and report the affairs of Maliwan city to the splendid Avatara. Whoever he mercifully appoints to guard this territory, you and your daughter should remain and rule with the women attendants."

Then lovely Queen Watchanisut heard the royal word and rejoiced. She bowed and reported to the solar-line king: "Your Majesty's mercy is grace beyond the three worlds. We two servants at your feet are destitute and without refuge. We ask to be shaded by Your Majesty's power until our lives end."

Then splendid solar-line Bharata heard the lady's lament and felt righteous mercy. He turned and commanded the yaksha ministers: "Help guard this city, so the people of the land may live happily." Having spoken, he walked down from the pearl palace with the surrounding soldiers and mounted the victorious chariot.

He ordered the troops withdrawn, yakshas and monkeys great and small, out of great Maliwan city and back to Mayura Mountain.

When they arrived, he descended from the royal chariot, walked gracefully with swinging hands, and went up into the bright golden pavilion.

Then the monkey and yaksha troops, now that the war was finished, rejoiced with cheerful hearts. They went in and out of Maliwan city, gathering pigs and chickens, teasing young women noisily, and joking with widows in loud merriment.

Then, when dawn light cleared, solar-line Bharata came out of the shining pavilion. Soldiers of the three cities, monkey and yaksha ministers, surrounded him like stars around the moon, with no dust or cloud near. He spoke sweetly and consulted the ministers and warriors: "Now the royal work is finished: we have cleansed the unrighteous enemies. We will withdraw the army and return to Ayutthaya to attend the Garuda-bearing lord. What does everyone think?"

Then thoughtful Phiphek heard the king's command, bowed, and answered: "If Your Majesty withdraws the army, the monkey and yaksha kings and the troops, to royal Ayutthaya now, it is the face of the rainy season and hard going. The soldiers will be troubled because rain falls everywhere. According to ancient custom, Your Majesty should be merciful."

Then radiant Bharata heard Phiphek the asura and answered: "If we stay until the cool season, the righteous lord may blame us, saying that we went to war, cleansed the dangerous enemies, and then delayed. The soldiers must endure some hardship, wading through water and rain because the route is forest. Sukhrip, arrange the army. We will march tomorrow."

Then Phraya Waiwongsa, splendid monkey, received the mighty lord's command, raised joined hands in homage, and went out.

He inspected the monkey soldiers by count, officers and common troops all complete. The mighty Wind-born one was made vanguard and guide. The eighteen crowned chiefs and powerful battle-wise soldiers marched with the king's army. The troops were beyond count. Asuraphat and Nilaphat walked flanking left and right. The two sons of Intharachit and all the Lanka soldiers formed the rear guard, following Narai's younger brother. They stood in ordered ranks along the forest road, packed across the earth.

Then the two radiant solar-line kings, when dawn broke and the sun's light cleared, came to bathe.

Jeweled lotus water poured in streams, cleansing dust and stain. They rubbed on royal perfumes and carefully powdered faces bright as the full moon. They put on lower garments with coiled vines, emerald stems, and ruby settings. Their clothes were different colors with golden patterned borders. Fluttering and side panels were golden vines; upper garments shone like brocade. Direction-plates, bright cat's-eye chest ornaments, chains and jeweled necklaces, dragon-form golden armlets, brilliant diamond rings, emerald and topaz crowns, graceful ear-pieces, and golden earrings adorned them. Each held a mighty arrow, peerless under heaven, and with many ministers came to the bright golden landing.

When the auspicious hour arrived, they withdrew the troops, monkey and yaksha armies. The two lords rode the jeweled chariot away from Maliwan city.

O royal chariot: its jeweled rims and wheels shone in patterns. The golden frame, mirror-panels, and coiled scrollwork were graceful; the tiered throne floated above. Jeweled pillars were set with diamonds; the sparkling crest shone like fireflies. The pavilion glittered with gems like a golden mansion floating in the sky. Four white horses, fierce as lion-kings, were harnessed to it. The younger brother sat in front with joined hands; the charioteer drove like passing wind. High insignia, peacock parasols, flags, trumpets, conches, pipes, gongs, and drums sounded through the forest. Asuras and monkeys shouted until the mountain and lofty wood rang, and the army hurried straight along the forest road.

Now the tale turns to radiant Walaha. When the rainy season came, he rejoiced and displayed his victorious power.

He became a fierce storm-wind in uproar, breaking and toppling trees everywhere. Dark clouds and mist covered the sky, and he made torrents of rain fall. The whole earth was flooded; water carried dust away, covered fields and forest roads, and flowed down mountain ravines and streams.

Then lovely Nang Mekhala, holding the jewel in her right hand, left her heavenly mansion. The goddess danced, circled, sang, and played happily. The jewel's flashing light filled the world as she moved swiftly through the sky.

Then Parot, a battle-wise yaksha, was in his splendid jeweled mansion and saw the apsaras Mekhala holding the shining jewel in her hand, dancing by the zodiac. The jewel's light spread bright and clear. Greed arose in him beyond measure; wanting to possess it, he took his arrow, left the victorious mansion, and flew in chase of the lady.

Then lovely Mani Mekhala saw Parot chasing close behind. The heavenly woman danced to lure the asura. She turned the jewel so its light flashed and scattered, then deliberately closed her hand to dim it. When he was far, she raised the jewel and teased the demon lord.

Then brave-hearted Parot the asura saw the lady's jewel and rushed forward, grasping with both hands. When he came near he could not see her; when he was far away he saw the lovely woman again. Furious as burning fire, he drew his arrow and shot by power.

Then Ramasun the yaksha, traveling through the cloud-folds, saw Mekhala the lady and the shining jewel she used to lure Parot the yaksha. Desire rose in him; he too wished for the young lady's jewel. Brandishing his diamond axe, he flew with a sound that shook and terrified all, charging close and chasing the divine lady.

Then lovely Mani Mekhala, while luring Parot the asura, met Ramasun the kumbhanda. She hid her body inside a fold of cloud, smiling and laughing brightly, then leaned out and tossed the glittering jewel, using it to lure them in circles.

Then mighty Ramasun the yaksha saw the jeweled orb and hurled his axe.

It cracked like storm-wind, shaking the world-mountains. He leapt and rushed swiftly, intending to seize the wishing-jewel.

Then lovely Mani Mekhala saw Ramasun chasing, with Parot the asura blocking her way. She felt no fear, but turned and circled, keeping them close. She rolled the shining jewel as if she would give it to the asura. When the two yakshas came close, she hid the jewel and slipped away; when they were far, she tossed the gem and mocked them back and forth.

Then mighty, brave-hearted Ramasun and Parot the asura both seized and grasped in confusion. When the jewel flashed, they leapt to catch it, eager to have it. When darkness fell and they grabbed wrongly, they grew frustrated and chased after the goddess.

Then radiant Bharata was fourteen yojanas into the forest. He saw the whole sky darkened, all directions trembling and thundering, rain falling and flooding the earth, the route through forest and crossing-places submerged, bamboo and trees bent, fallen, and broken while the storm roared without pause. Furious as fire, he took up his arrow to shoot.

Then thoughtful Phiphek, alarmed, embraced Bharata's foot and immediately reported: "It is not proper for Your Majesty to be angry with radiant Parot. This is the world's ordinary custom from ancient times. When rain-clouds leave their mansions, they bring rain to the earth, and all beings in the world enjoy the sky-water. Command your arrow to drive Walaha away so rain will not fall nearby; then the road will not be difficult. Let Your Majesty show mercy."

Then solar-line Bharata heard, gave command to the mighty arrow, and released it at once.

Its sound rang through the sky. The arrow chased radiant Walaha away; Parot, Ramasun, and Mani Mekhala also fled.

The sun shone clear in the sky; there were no dark clouds or rain. Bharata ordered the great army moved, hurrying along the forest road.

He watched the four-footed animals wandering at the forest edge. Wild cattle came in herds; tigers crouched watching deer. Young bulls grazed in wandering turns; lions followed other lion bands. Elephants led female elephants with noisy calls. Antelope moved in turns eating thorns beside the deer. Monkeys ran and leapt in confusion, teasing one another. Lion-elephants roared while walking along mountain slopes and cliffs. Wild oxen bounded across the road; hares startled and ran in disorder. Porcupines, civets, bears, and gibbons clung to trees and cried. Delighting in these sights, he hurried the chariot and the troops onward through the forest.

They crossed paths, open fields, forest hollows, streams, fords, and mountain courses, traveling through the forest until they reached Lanka city.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha ordered the great army halted in the pleasure garden.

Then sorrowful Nang Trichada, young Benchakai, and lovely Suwannakanyuma learned that the two lords of Narai's lineage had raised the army, killed Cakkrawat the asura, won victory, and returned to the city. The army was resting outside the city in the garden residence. They rejoiced and wished to go attend the righteous lord.

Then heavenly Nang Montho learned that all the women would go out to bow to the mighty lord. If she stayed still, she feared danger; if she went out, she feared fault. Her heart burned like poison-fire, and she could hardly bear her body. Strengthening herself, she descended from the jeweled palace with Trichada the asura lady, and the women went together.

When they arrived, they lowered themselves and bowed in attendance, joined hands in homage. Only young Nang Montho kept her head lowered and did not lift her face.

Then Bharata, solar-line lord of the discus, saw the wife of Phiphek the demon lord. Smiling brightly, he greeted her. The righteous lord's heart was very glad, and his face shone like the moon cleared of clouds. Narai's younger brother rejoiced. He rested the brave troops in the yaksha garden, beautiful as Indra visiting Nandana. The two kings toured the city, through the royal residence and territory, seeing Thotsakan's wealth and furnishings, joyful as heaven.

Then the yakshas and monkeys great and small went about gathering fruit with delighted hearts. The monkeys ran in confusion, competing with the yakshas, joking and laughing, and every division rejoiced.

Then Bharata, solar-line archer, rested the monkey army there for three nights. When the sun brightened and gold light shone, and the pleasant calls of roosters and birds joined together with the sound of gongs, drums, and pipes, he woke from the jeweled golden couch together with his younger brother.

They bathed, put on shining ornaments like divine figures, and the two kings walked to mount the bright jeweled chariot.

He ordered the brave soldiers to leave the yaksha garden. They shouted until sky and earth rang, and the charioteer urged the chariot onward.

Then fierce Hanuman, skilled in war, when they reached the ocean shore, raised joined hands and recited powerful spells.

At once he changed into an eagle as large as Mount Meru and stretched himself across the ocean shore, becoming a vast road.

Then solar-line Bharata saw Phraya Anuchit display power and become a road across the great ocean, smooth as earth. The king rejoiced and ordered the army to cross, and the troops hurried across.

When they reached the far shore with all the soldiers great and small, Bharata ordered the shining jeweled chariot driven along the forest road.

He listened to the calls of birds, some gliding and calling from branches, and admired the many trees, their branches fresh and ordered. Some bore flowers and fruit in abundance on both sides of the forest road, raw, half-ripe, and ripe mixed together: yellow like gold, green like emerald, red like shining ruby. Some fruit had fallen thickly onto the sand, and the monkeys gathered and ate it. Gentle wind blew coolly, carrying pollen-fragrance. The sound of bamboo groves was like lute music; cicadas and crickets sang like clear song. Traveling through the forest, the king hurried toward Ayutthaya city.

When they arrived, Bharata halted the monkey and yaksha army, had the bright jeweled chariot set at the splendid jeweled landing, and invited his dear younger brother to descend from the victorious chariot with the soldiers and kings. They went to the royal hall.

The two kings bowed their heads at the feet of splendid Phra Narai, and all the ministers who had come bowed in reverence.

Then Phra Hariwong, radiant and blessed, came out to the ministers. Seeing his two younger brothers with the battle-wise soldiers and Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha, the king rejoiced immensely and gave royal command: "Listen, my two dear younger brothers, who share my life. You went to subdue the demon enemies. How strong were those wicked ones? How did vile Thotsaphin resist? Was great Maliwan city difficult or easy to take, my brothers?"

Then Bharata, solar-line younger brother, bowed his head and reported to Phra Chakra: "Your servant went to subdue the enemies. Thotsaphin was captured, and so was Waranisun the yaksha; their heads were cut off and staked in the city. Then we marched to Maliwan. First Shatrughna fought deluded Suriya Phop, son of Cakkrawat the kumbhanda, and was struck by that fierce spear. When Banlai Chak fought, he shot the arrow that bound and carried him off. Twice it was as if his life would end, but he was saved in time. Later my younger brother went hand-to-hand against brave Cakkrawat and was struck by the demon lord's arrows. But by the mighty Avatara's grace, the splendid jeweled armor Your Majesty gave protected him so that his body was not hurt, and so we killed the unrighteous one." He reported every matter from beginning to end, explaining the great war, every reversal and victory, until Maliwan city was taken.

Then the glorious solar-line Narai heard his brother who shared his life and gave command: "The yakshas of Maliwan city were each strong and brave, trained in spells and possessing terrible divine weapons. Because you two fought, you won. Apart from us, no one could have subdued them and ended their lives." Having spoken, Phra Chakri gave a lion-voiced command: "What of you, Phiphek the demon lord? You are an astrologer, wise and able to know people's hearts clearly. Yet you did not examine and consider before raising the enemy's child. You let him do this much, as if you had no wisdom. If quick-witted Asuraphat, our beloved nephew, had not come to report the matter, we would not have raised the army to help, and you would have died because of that vile-hearted child, bringing disgrace to the earth."

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha heard and answered: "May Your Majesty be merciful. I was deluded and bewildered by affection. When Your Majesty gave me Lanka, I did not know that Montho was pregnant. I thought he was a child of my blood, loved him deeply, and did not dislike him. I was easy-hearted and did not understand that he would destroy my life. When Mahaban fought, I marched out against the yaksha and lost advantage; this time too I nearly died. Twice only Your Majesty's power saved my life. Your grace surpasses the three worlds and is deep beyond counting. I have offended the dust beneath the feet of the lord of the three worlds; the fault is heavy enough for royal punishment. May Your Majesty be gracious."

Then the glorious solar-line Narai heard Phiphek the asura, smiled, and said: "Enemies despise the demon lord because you have no power. Lanka, victorious city, is abundant with wealth, happiness, and joy like Tavatimsa, so enemies grew jealous and came to fight and seize the city." Having spoken, the discus-bearing lord commanded radiant Phra Lak and Sumanthan the minister: "Now the demons have been subdued. We will reward those who have merit, each according to fitting rank. Assemble the wise ministers and consult fully on the rewards."

Then splendid solar-line Phra Lak and great minister Sumanthan received the command and went out.

They assembled the ministers and officials, the judges and wise elders. Sattaphali the skilled one brought the records at once.

Then the ministers great and small, priests, elders, and quick-minded judges bowed at Phra Lak's feet and consulted according to the records from the time Narai had granted lands and ranks after the Lanka war, using that as their standard. They judged that Bharata, younger brother and supreme army commander, had gone in place of the Garuda-bearing lord to subdue the kumbhandas, rescue Thao Thotsakhiriwong, recover Lanka, march to hard Maliwan, endure terrible arrows, kill Cakkrawat, Suriya Phop, and Banlai Chak, and bring great Maliwan under Ayutthaya; his merit was immense. Shatrughna likewise fought bravely, twice nearly dying from Suriya Phop's spear and Banlai Chak's binding arrow, yet never faltered and killed Nonyupak; his merit matched Bharata's, and both should be viceroys like Phra Lak, with diamond crowns, chains, and royal ornaments. The younger brother of Pali, who rescued Shatrughna in the clouds when the Heraphot arrow had struck him, should receive royal ornaments, emerald crown and chain, rings, high insignia, parasol, and fly-whisk. Thao Thotsakhiriwong, loyal astrologer and sure war-eye, should receive a nine-gem crown paired with Cakkrawat's, robes, chains, and jeweled ornaments. Phraya Anuchit, of Chakri's line, destroyed Maliwan's gates of acid water and fire, became an eagle to rescue the younger king, and completed the war; because Maliwan was so great, he should rule that realm over the asura yakshas with crown, ear ornaments, royal dress, attendants, and power. Phraya Intharanuphap had great merit in breaking Banlai Chak's rite, killing Phetra, destroying Rahu's army, and rescuing Shatrughna; he should receive chains, crown, earrings, royal flowers, and fitting rewards. Nilaphat led the Chomphu army, made his body a road over the sea, gathered medicines for Shatrughna, killed Kapin the asura, followed and recovered the prince from the sea-creature, broke the underworld rite, and killed Vaiyatal; he should be named Phraya Aphaiyaphatphongsa, front lord of Chomphu city, with ruby crown, chains, chest ornaments, water vessel, and diamond rings. Nilanon and Chomphuphan carried messages to Lanka and Maliwan, fought the yakshas, and should receive crowns, nine-gem chains, and fine robes equally. Asuraphat feared not deluded Cakkrawat, was loyal, brought the warning, led the army to Lanka, captured Thotsaphin, and helped break Vaiyatal's and Banlai Chak's rites; he should be viceroy of Lanka, named Phraya Maranurat, with great crown and royal ornaments. The two sons of Intharachit were loyal, secretly left the city, reported everything, helped capture Thotsaphin, and completed the campaign. The elder should be Phraya Wanyupak, lord of Kuru city; the younger, brave and wise, should be Phraya Kannuchit, ruler of the Cakkrawan territory; both should receive full royal regalia, and Paowanasun should return to serve as chief city-eye minister under Thao Thotsakhiriwong. The monkey soldiers who killed enemies should receive diamond headbands, golden boxes, and golden vessels by rank, and the Lanka troops should all receive rewards.

When they arrived, they bowed at the feet of Narai, lord of kings, and reported the ministers' counsel as arranged in every detail.

Then the lord of the three worlds, who surpasses every place, heard his wise younger brother report the soldiers' rewards. Since each merit and fitting honor matched his thought, he rejoiced and gave royal command: "When Thao Thotsakhiriwong rules the realm hereafter, there will be no wicked rebels, because of our beloved nephew's power. The whole territory and kingdom will be abundant, happy, and peaceful, continuing the solar-line yaksha house with increasing honor." Having spoken, Phra Chakri granted pensions and rewards to soldiers great and small according to the merits they had performed, including all the great troops of Ket city.

Then Bharata, radiant Shatrughna, and all the monkey and asura kings bowed their heads together, received the granted ranks and gifts, and rejoiced. The soldiers of the four cities, officers and common troops alike, also all received rewards.

Then the lord of the three worlds, who surpasses all worlds, when the rewards for every company were finished and the afternoon sun bent low, left the jeweled and golden couch, stately as a lion-king, and walked gracefully into the jeweled palace.
