Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the one-hundred-third สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Wanyuwik and Matchanu coming up from the underworld, a mistaken frontier battle with Maha Chomphu, Hanuman's settlement of the matter, Rama transforming Matchanu and appointing him ruler of Maliwan with Rattanamali, the allied kings' return home, and Adun tricking Sita into drawing Thotsakan before entering the image.

Translation

Matchanu Is Raised and Adun Enters the Painted Image

Now the tale turns to Wanyuwik the yaksha and mighty Matchanu, who ruled the underworld city. They thought of Phra Chakrit, mighty above every place, and of brave Phraya Hanuman, whose help and favor had been immeasurable. "Let us go up to attend the feet of glorious Phra Narai, so we may rely on his power and merit as our shelter from now on." Having thought this, Wanyuwik commanded the demon ministers: "Prepare the soldiers, great and small. I will go up to attend the lord in victorious Ayutthaya."

Then the honored ministers received the command, bowed farewell, and went out from the royal hall.

They mustered four divisions in strange array, fierce, black, and strongly built. Elephant lords rode shield-faced elephants, holding hooks upright and moving gracefully. Horse lords rode fine horses, holding bright javelins. Chariot lords rode golden chariots, holding bows and testing the strings. Commanders arranged the brave soldiers, thick across the underworld ground, and prepared the shining jeweled chariot by the direction of march.

Then Wanyuwik the yaksha and the mighty grandson of the Wind-born one came to the bathing place.

They bathed and refreshed their bodies, jeweled sprinklers pouring like rain. They wore sweet perfumes mixed with heavenly golden flower-garlands. Their lower garments had raised borders and pearl-scroll patterns; their garments were different radiant colors. Fluttering and side panels shone; their upper robes were bright brocade with vine-work. Direction-plates, chest ornaments, red-jeweled chains, golden serpent armlets, and shining diamond rings adorned them. Wanyuwik wore a crown and flower-garland; Matchanu wore bright earrings. Each grasped his weapon, fierce and splendid, descended from the glittering jeweled couch, and walked to their mother's palace.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet of their yaksha mother and reported: "Your beloved sons ask leave to go to Ayutthaya city to bow to the supreme lord, glorious Phra Narai, and to mighty Phraya Hanuman, whose kindness has aided us from before."

Then tender Nang Phirakwan heard the two royal princes and rejoiced. Stroking their backs, she spoke gently and blessed them with love: "You go to attend Phra Chakra. Dear jewels, may you have auspiciousness and welfare."

Then radiant Wanyuwik and Matchanu received their mother's blessing, raised joined hands in homage, and mounted the chariots.

O two royal chariots: their wheels and rims were emerald, the yokes soft and graceful, with tiered thrones and crested panels. Reverent gods and Garudas carrying nagas shone on the sides; four-faced pavilions glittered like Indra's mansions. Royal lions were harnessed to them; charioteers held bows and drove swiftly as flying swans. High insignia stood in rows, foreign trumpets and victory drums sounded together, and mighty Matchanu moved as the vanguard. They split through the earth, the army shouting in uproar, dust darkening the sky as chariots and troops hurried on.

They reached the frontier of Ayutthaya, where roads met in a great way. Seeing troop-tracks spread through the forest, crushed and fallen trees everywhere, the two kings were deeply puzzled. "Could this be a yaksha army leading troops to attack Ayutthaya? Let us stop and listen, ask the border guards what has happened, and learn whether the matter is good or bad before moving the army in." Having thought this, they halted the army at the foot of a great mountain. Their troops rested happily, chasing animals in noisy confusion.

Then radiant Thao Maha Chomphu, ruler of Chomphu city, thought of Phra Chakra and of Nilaphat his grandson, who had gone to serve, and of the two royal younger brothers at Lanka and great Maliwan. "It has been long, and I have heard no news, whether bad or good. Let me raise the army and attend Phra Chakri."

Having thought this, he spoke and ordered the four great ministers: "Arrange the great army. I will go to royal Ayutthaya."

Then the honored ministers received the command, bowed farewell, and went out from the royal hall.

They mustered ten oceans of monkey troops, choosing only powerful, fierce, strong warriors. Each was brave, stout, and mighty, able to overturn the earth, pull up mountain peaks and break them, fly through the sky, and scoop a whirlpooling sea dry. They arranged ranks at left, right, front, and rear, prepared the bright jeweled chariot, and set it beside the jeweled landing.

Then brave Thao Maha Chomphu left the sky-bright jeweled chamber and came to bathe in the water.

He bathed his body in water fragrant with pollen. His jeweled lower garment had curved borders; his red udumbara cloth shone. Fluttering and side panels had swan-scroll patterns; the upper garment showed floating disks and vine-work. Direction-plates, diamond chest ornaments, chains, jeweled waist ornaments, golden dragon armlets, Garuda-set diamond rings, great crown, ear-pieces, and golden earrings adorned him. He wore a shining royal sword at his side and walked gracefully to mount the chariot.

O coral chariot: jeweled wheels and bright rims rose gracefully. The soft yoke carried flags; hubs and throne panels floated with crestwork. Tiered images and scrollwork, a pavilion held by golden figures, and four bright faces shone with gems. It was harnessed to two pairs of yellow cloud-horses. The charioteer drove quickly from the city. High insignia, golden parasols, foreign trumpets, gongs, and drums sounded. The monkeys leapt and shouted in war-pride as they hurried onward.

Then the monkey commander at the vanguard led the army to the Ayutthaya frontier, where the roads joined. Seeing yaksha footprints spread through the forest, he wondered whether the two royal younger brothers had finished the war and returned. He halted the army and went alone through the forest to inspect.

He saw the kumbhanda soldiers set in layered ranks and, supposing them enemies, watched from hiding and returned at once.

When he arrived, he bowed at the feet of radiant Thao Chomphu and reported: "An asura army is camped beside the road. One leader has a monkey face, a stout body, and a fish tail; another is a yaksha king."

Then splendid Thao Maha Chomphu heard the battle-wise soldier and grew deeply suspicious. "Bharata has gone and not yet returned. Why is there a yaksha army? It must be enemy kings coming to attack Ayutthaya. I must go out and destroy them, repaying the grace of the Avatara." Having thought this, he hurried the army forward to strike the kumbhanda vanguard.

Then the strong, mighty officers received the command, bowed, and drove together into battle.

Then the underworld yaksha soldiers, caught unprepared, lost advantage and fled broken down the line.

Then mighty, brave-hearted Matchanu and Wanyuwik the asura heard the uproar and looked out. Seeing the monkeys attack their army in confusion, the two officers grew angry like burning fire. "Bah, forest-monkeys. Why do you come arrogantly to attack? Perhaps these animals intend evil against glorious Phra Narai's feet." Having spoken, they drove the jeweled chariots and brought the army into battle.

Then the brave asura soldiers, fearing their lords' punishment beyond measure, split and leapt into battle. They surged forward, striking and cutting, grappling in confused melee, pressing from the flanks, firing guns, and shouting in uproar.

Then the splendid monkey soldiers, when the yakshas turned to fight, lost advantage and broke in confusion.

Then brave Thao Maha Chomphu saw the monkeys break and grew angry. He drove the chariot in to chase the army.

Then the battle-wise monkey soldiers rallied and turned back into combat with the demon troops. Monkeys seized yakshas in groups; yakshas surrounded and seized monkeys, showing courage. Each side had enduring battle-power, cutting and leaping without giving way. The ranks of both armies shouted until the earth thundered, dust darkened into smoky cloud, and the sun was hidden in the sky.

Then Phra Harirak, the lord, came out to the jeweled hall with ministers and soldiers, beautiful as the moon under a shining parasol, bright as the sky with stars around him. Hearing the roar of battle, the earth trembling and the sky darkening the sun, the righteous lord wondered in his heart.

He gave royal command to brave Phraya Anuchit: "Why is there this uproar? Go see and learn the matter clearly."

Then fierce Hanuman, the great soldier, received the lord of the three worlds' command, bowed, and came out at once.

He looked carefully around every direction of royal Ayutthaya. To the south there was tumult, and the monkey lord flew there by power.

When he reached the edge of the great frontier, he looked along the forest line and saw Wanyuwik the asura and Prince Matchanu leading kumbhanda troops in battle against the brave monkey soldiers of victorious Thao Chomphu. Alarmed, he leapt down.

He ran to stand between them, blocking the front, and asked: "Who are you? What cause and matter brought you here to fight one another?"

Then strong, mighty Matchanu and Wanyuwik the kumbhanda saw Hanuman and rejoiced. Each came to pay reverence, bowing at the splendid monkey's feet. They said: "We two servants came to attend the dust of Phra Chakra's feet. Seeing the tracks of horses, chariots, and many troops, we stopped to learn what had happened. Then the monkey-king troops attacked us, supposing us enemies acting treacherously against splendid Narai. We did not care for our lives and led the kumbhandas out to fight."

Then radiant Thao Maha Chomphu told mighty Hanuman: "I too came to attend the four-armed lord. Meeting the asura army already camped here, I sent a powerful minister and monkeys to spy. They did not know anyone and grew suspicious, thinking the troops were enemies advancing by war-trick. So we attacked the yakshas. Have the two royal younger brothers now returned?"

Then Phraya Anuchit the great soldier heard and laughed with glad heart. Bowing, he spoke gently: "This young prince is my son, named Matchanu, skilled in war. That is mighty Wanyuwik, ruler of the underworld city. All are servants of Phra Narai. You would have killed one another through boasting, wounding the armies for nothing, had I not arrived at once. The two royal younger brothers have fought the yakshas, won victory over the royal enemies, and now returned."

Then Thao Maha Chomphu said to Wanyuwik the asura and Prince Matchanu: "I am the elder and did not inquire. Rashly I raised the army to fight, causing distress and trouble. Nephews, do not hold fault or anger against me."

Then mighty Matchanu and Wanyuwik the kumbhanda bowed and answered: "We nephews too were gravely at fault, bold enough to answer and fight our elder. Mighty lord, grant pardon to your grandchildren."

Then brave Phraya Anuchit ordered the armies of the two cities moved into the royal city.

When they arrived, he halted the soldiers outside the splendid city wall and hurried alone into the royal hall.

He bowed at the feet of the splendid lord of the three worlds and reported the whole matter, explaining from beginning to end. "Your servant arrived in time and forbade them, so the battle on both sides was stilled. Life of your servant, Phra Narai: I ask leave for the three officers to enter and bow before the supreme lord in the middle of the court. May Your Majesty show favor."

Then glorious Phra Krishnurak heard mighty Phraya Anuchit and rejoiced greatly. He ordered Thao Chomphu of the solar line, lord of the powerful monkey race, Wanyuwik the yaksha lord, and Matchanu, your beloved son, to be brought in.

Then the brave-hearted, mighty Wind-born one received the lord's command, bowed farewell, and hurried out.

He told the matter to the three officers: the arrow-bearing Phra Narai had commanded the two city-lords to attend him together.

Then the three strong, mighty officers learned that the righteous lord had summoned them and rejoiced as if bathed in the nectar of radiant Indra. They hurried after Hanuman the monkey.

Each bowed at the feet of lord Phra Narai in the middle of the ministers and soldiers, waiting for the righteous lord's command.

Then Phra Harirak saw battle-wise Thao Chomphu and Wanyuwik the asura and rejoiced. He greeted the splendid monkey king: "It has been long; only today do we see one another, and we are deeply glad. And Wanyuwik, demon lord ruling the underworld realm: is your yaksha city full of happiness, or has any enemy arisen? Are the people stable? The road is far and difficult; what do you desire, that you have come up?"

Then mighty Wanyuwik the yaksha heard the royal command of powerful Phra Chakra: sweetly he had asked with sincere mercy. The asura rejoiced beyond thought, raised joined hands, and reported: "The underworld city has no trouble. By Your Majesty's mighty power shading it, it is happy every night. I and Matchanu have come to attend the dust of your feet with loyal hearts, so welfare may endure."

Then solar-line Narai, the archer-lord, when he had finished speaking with the two city-lords, looked and saw the grandson of the Wind-born god. His face looked greatly like his father. The lord smiled brightly and commanded: "Listen, Phraya Hanuman. This Matchanu is bold and brave in bearing; yet when I look at him, I feel troubled because your son's tail is like his mother's."

Then Phraya Anuchit, skilled in war, heard the king's words. The monkey bowed with joined fingers and said: "Prince Matchanu is brave, powerful, and mighty. If compared with Asuraphat, they are alike in both power and wisdom. May Your Majesty be gracious and transform him out of fish-form, so he may serve beneath your feet until his life ends."

Then Phra Chakrit, whose power surpassed the sunlight, heard brave Hanuman. The king spoke: "I will help him pass beyond fish-form. Do not be anxious, splendid monkey." Having spoken, the king took the royal sword, brandishing it like firelight.

By Phra Narai's mighty power, the sword did not touch Matchanu's body, yet the tail broke away and vanished, without pain or suffering.

Then the mighty Wind-born one and Prince Matchanu rejoiced as if they had gained the sixteen heavens. Father and son bowed at the lotus feet, their faces bright because their wish had been fulfilled, like the moon with a halo and no blemish.

Then all the yaksha and monkey kings, ministers, priests, brahmins, and ascetics saw Matchanu's tail vanish by splendid Phra Narai's power. They were filled with great wonder, their heads shaking and spirits thrilled. With joined hands raised above their heads, they praised his power in delight: "It was not in vain that we were born as servants beneath the dust of his lotus feet. We have seen blessing with our own eyes; we will tell it to children, grandchildren, and descendants. His grace spreads through the universe, and no one in the three worlds can equal him."

Then the lord of the three worlds, having transformed the grandson of the Wind-born god, gave royal command: "The ministers advised that radiant Phraya Anuchit should rule Maliwan city, but the monkey lord would be far from us. Matchanu, his son, has fierce power and sharp wisdom; he should be lord of the asura yakshas and rule the city in his father's place together with Rattanamali, daughter of battle-wise Cakkrawat. Let him be named Phraya Hanuratcha, mighty in war, and continue the royal line steadily." Having spoken, he called for royal regalia, crown, and earrings, and bestowed them. "Wanyuwik, swift in wisdom, return to rule the underworld city," and he gave him a crown and jeweled ear ornaments bright with pearls. "Victorious Thao Chomphu, you too have merit: you mustered troops to fight the yakshas until the wars of Lanka and Maliwan were completed. Return to rule your city in lasting happiness, standing in the ten royal virtues under great enduring honor." He gave him royal garments, crown, rings, chains, direction-plates, and chest ornaments, all finished with splendid jewels.

Then wise and brave Thao Chomphu, Wanyuwik the demon lord, and mighty Matchanu all bowed together at the lotus feet and received the gifts with joy in the middle of the ministers and army.

Then solar-line Narai spoke sweetly: "Listen, handsome Bharata. Since you raised the brave army to subdue the enemy demons, the thorns of the yaksha enemies have all ended by your power, dear brother. Our grandfather and grandmother in Kaikeya do not know whether matters are good or bad and may be waiting. Return to Kaikeya city, so the two kings may be happy. And let the yaksha and monkey kings who rule cities great and small raise their armies and return to their royal cities. Care for the people so they live stable, happy, and prosperous. Stand in truthful speech; let no danger or illness arise."

Then Bharata, Shatrughna, and all the kings bowed in homage and went out.

Each mounted horse, chariot, or elephant; each raised his soldiers great and small; each separated along the forest roads and returned to his royal city.

Then glorious solar-line Narai lived happily every night with lovely Lakshmi. He was adorned by hundreds of thousands of women attendants, eighty-four thousand like apsarases, and shaded the people as a jeweled parasol over their heads. The city was joyful as Indra's city. Kings offered golden flowers at his feet. Music and lutes sounded continually through the whole city. Ministers, merchants, common people, foreigners, Chinese, Cham, brahmins, and ascetics all enjoyed happiness. At last beautiful Sita became pregnant with a royal son, three months counted, and Phra Chakra wished to go enjoy the forest.

Having thought this, he dressed in shining ornaments, beautiful beyond compare in the three worlds, left the splendid divine couch, and went to the shining royal hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the white parasol's light. The ministers attended and bowed. The righteous lord gave royal command: "Listen, Sumanthan the minister, honored one. I will go enjoy the forest. Prepare the soldiers."

Then Sumanthan, battle-wise minister, bowed his head to receive the king's command and hurried out.

He arranged the troops for a royal forest outing in a great bowl-formation. The vanguard led the main force, wearing pink coats and carrying red matchlocks, walking in pairs. One division wore batstu coats and carried bows. One wore young-leaf coats and carried gold-inlaid spears. Elephants stood in alternating rows; cavalry horses were interwoven by rank. The rear guard wore sandal-colored coats and carried bows with poison-arrows. Malay foreign troops carried paired spears and krises. By night, the troops filled the field in every direction.

Then radiant Phra Hariwong slept on the bright couch with Lady Sita, surrounded by hundreds of thousands of women attendants serving his feet in supreme happiness in the splendid jeweled chamber. When the sun lit the clear sky, cuckoos called sweetly, and trumpets, conches, gongs, and victory drums sounded.

He woke from the splendid couch, his face bright as the moon, invited the dear younger brother who shared his heart, and went to the bathing place.

The two kings bathed, water pouring down like rain, cool and sweet against their bodies. They wore perfumes mixed with nine-gem flowers and rose-gold scent. Their lower garments had curved borders embroidered with sea-watching dragons. Their different-colored garments bore Garuda-vines on purple brocade and floating gold. Fluttering and side panels flashed with golden crestwork; upper garments carried bird designs of varied kinds. Direction-plates, jeweled chains and divine ornaments, dragon-form golden armlets, Garuda-egg rings, great crowns and jewel earrings adorned them. Each grasped a powerful arrow and walked gracefully to the splendid landing.

He ordered the army to move, elephants and horses in the vanguard. The two lords rode the jeweled chariot out through the city gate.

O palace-chariot: coral-bright hubs shone; the rims were decorated; the graceful yoke bore coiled scrollwork. Tiered throne panels were carved with coiling vines, Garudas, and reverent gods in rows, all glittering with gold. Its four faces shone like moonlight, bright with gold and gems. Three pairs of good silver-colored horses were harnessed. Phra Lak sat bowing with joined hands. The charioteer drove in haste. High insignia, fans, pipes, gongs, and drums sounded together. The soldiers shouted in commotion, the earth shook, and the chariot hurried into the forest.

They traveled between rows of trees, skirting mountain slopes, admiring the birds flying and perching beautifully. Golden orioles preened golden tails; paired birds nestled by one another. Doves flew to lamphu trees; separated birds came to sandalwood. Mynas perched on kalong branches; swans on krathang-han trees. Parrots perched on kaeo trees and spoke together; many-colored birds lined the jambolan. Cuckoos called in the hills; koel birds cried from cardamom. Owls looked from mong trees; green pigeons perched by hiang trees. Flame-backed birds gathered at ma-fai trees; bamboo birds flew around the bamboo groves. Gulls settled with gulls; nori birds glided down to rak trees. Junglefowl perched in rok-fa trees; herons came in pairs to teak. Wind-eating birds pecked aloeswood; waterfowl perched on liap and flew away. Peacocks danced with spread tails; egrets perched on tall phayung trees. The more the king watched, the more his heart delighted in the forested mountains.

Then Lady Sita, lovely as heaven, remained in the bright jeweled chamber inside the splendid palace. Beautiful women attended and served her like stars around the moon moving through clouds. Suddenly heat and unease arose in her heart, as if she lay in fierce fire. She kept rising and sitting again, her body uncomfortable.

She invited the women attendants and walked from the splendid palace chamber, moving gracefully to the waterside.

When they arrived, she went down to bathe by the cool clear riverbank with the inner attendants. They played happily, teasing one another, laughing noisily. Some struck the water so it splashed loud; some played at throwing water into one another's eyes; some played chase, seizing at each other. Some dived and came up, grabbing a companion's body so that she cried out startled and trembling. Some fled and chased in confusion, the river ringing with noise. Some sang laments and answering songs, shifting tunes in sweet drawn-out melodies. All the women rejoiced.

Now the tale turns to Nang Adun the yaksha woman. She was a demoness beneath the earth, of the lineage of the ten-faced king. She was deluded, jealous, sinful, harsh, and ugly at heart. Knowing that lovely Sita, the chief queen, had come to bathe, she thought in vengeful malice: "I will make dear Sita separate from mighty Rama." Thinking this, she came up.

When she reached the riverbank, the demoness hid herself in the trees and recited powerful spells, transforming her body at once.

In a moment the yaksha form vanished and she became a beautiful young human woman, moving gracefully toward the bathing-place of the lovely queen.

She crouched low and approached in attendance, raising joined hands in homage, and reported: "Your servant was careless and did not come in time for Your Ladyship's procession. As if I were not one of your close attendants, this fault of mine is heavy. May my mother-lady have mercy and grant pardon this time."

Then lovely Sita, believing she was a woman attendant, answered with a royal word: "Because you did not come in time, I will not hold fault against you." Having spoken, she rose from the water and went to the splendid palace.

Then bold-hearted demoness Adun crouched near the noble lady and served, doing her work so that no one knew the trick. She reported: "When my mother-lady fell into the yaksha garden, Thotsakan, lord of Lanka, vile and wicked, fought against you. What was the kumbhanda's face and form like, fair lady? I have been born this long and never seen the demon lord."

Then young and tender Sita did not know that the vile demoness had come by deceit to destroy her. She said: "Thotsakan's body had twenty arms and ten faces, strange beyond other asuras, with terrible power. Even if he transformed himself, he could become like anyone. He was vile and ugly beyond measure; his nature was known across the whole earth."

Then Adun the yaksha demoness saw that the lady had fallen for the trick and rejoiced. Raising joined hands, she answered: "May my mother-lady favor your loyal servant and draw the ten-faced yaksha, so that by the lady's merit I may see what twenty arms and ten faces were like."

Then young, beloved Sita, honest and unsuspecting, drew the asura's form: all twenty arms and ten heads, without error from the yaksha's body. She handed it to the woman at once: "This is the form of Thotsakan, lord of Lanka."

Then the women attendants left and right crowded in tightly to look at the drawing of the yaksha king. Each said that it was hateful, with tangled hands and heads, ugly and arrogant, having opposed Phra Harirak until the yaksha race lost its life.

Then Phra Bhuchaphong, splendid lord, wandered enjoying the trees in the forest until the evening sun declined. He withdrew the fourfold army, crossed streams and mountain slopes, hurried the troops, and returned into Ayutthaya city.

Then Adun the yaksha demoness learned that Rama had arrived and rejoiced because her thought had succeeded, as if she had gained wealth in the tiered mansion of Dusit. By power she changed and vanished, entering the painted image.

Then the inner attendants great and small, seeing the woman vanish in the middle of the company, were terrified and realized she was a demoness. They screamed and cried out, rising, falling, crawling senselessly, and running into one another in confusion.

Then lovely heavenly Sita, learning that the righteous lord had reached the shining golden landing, tried to erase the asura image. She washed it with water, but it would not disappear; the lines only became clearer. The fair lady trembled with fear.
