Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the one-hundred-fourth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Rama's madness after Sita hides the image of Thotsakan, Sita's confession, Rama's command that Lakshmana kill her, Lakshmana's failed execution in Kalawat forest, the royal sword becoming a garland by Sita's truth, Indra's deer-heart substitute, Sita's lonely forest wandering, Indra guiding her as a buffalo, and Wachamruek Rishi sheltering Sita until childbirth.

Translation

Sita Is Sent into the Forest

Then the lord who subdued the worlds came to the jeweled landing as the sun's light was ending. Moon and stars moved through the sky; the heavens shone bright. He descended from the adorned royal chariot and walked up into the victorious palace.

He reclined on the throne-bed, but could not sleep in peace. His heart was troubled and struck within his breast as if bedbugs crawled over his whole body. A consuming heat rose in him as if Rudra's fire had been set there. He started up and sat down again and again, senseless on the shining golden couch. He looked out through the lion-window at the clear moonlight, hoping that the coolness of the sky might touch his body and relieve his torment. But when the wind blew softly, it only made him burn like fire. Seeing the women attendants passing before him, he grew still more furious.

"Ha! Look at these attendants," he cried. "You all come to sit together before me, putting on your clever gestures and manners. Have you come to mock me?"

As he spoke he seized and drew his royal sword. He stamped his feet until all trembled, brandished the blade like fire, and chased the women.

"You attendants!" he cried. "I will cut off your heads. Why do you bring that black-hearted woman and then run away? You come together and dare to jeer at me." So the king turned and pursued them back and forth.

The attendants shook in terror. Their fear of royal punishment multiplied. They screamed in confusion, shrieked, fled, stumbled, fell, and tumbled over one another in uproar.

When he saw the women hiding and fleeing without stopping before him, his anger blazed hotter than the fire at the end of the age. Mad with rage and grief, he swung the royal sword, turned this way and that, and struck among the attendants until all were thrown into disorder.

Then young beloved Sita saw the mighty lord gone mad and chasing the women. Shaking with fear, she ordered a trusted attendant: "Go tell Phra Lak the king that I ask him to come here at once."

The beloved maidservant received the queen's command, bowed farewell, and hurried away.

When she arrived, she crawled in to audience, bowed with joined hands above her head, and reported everything exactly as the noble lady had commanded.

Then wise and brave Phra Lak was startled as if his life would end. The lord hurried away at once.

He bent his head in homage at the feet of Queen Lakshmi-Sita in the adorned palace, among the women attendants.

Then lovely Sita saw the powerful younger brother and spoke to him: "Now your royal elder brother cannot go to sleep. He is pursuing and striking the attendants within; every woman is frightened and running in confusion. I sent to invite you, beloved one who shared your brother's hardships. Go out to attend the king. Perhaps his anger will ease."

Then Phra Lak, the younger brother, received the queen's command, bowed at her feet, and hurried away.

When he arrived, he clasped Rama's feet, raised his hands in homage, and asked, "O lord who rules the three worlds, why have you become like this?"

Then jewel-bright Phra Chakri saw his younger brother, companion of his life, and the king slowly recovered his senses. He said, "Listen, Lak. Dear brother, more beloved than all: I went to sleep on the radiant jeweled couch, but my mind grew troubled as if struck by a poisoned arrow. My body burns; I cannot sleep. What can be the cause? Search everywhere at once."

Then radiant Phra Lak bowed his head, received Phra Chakri's command, joined his hands, and entered.

He searched through the palace chamber. He lifted the spread coverings and bedding, looked behind screens, curtains, and doors, and saw nothing strange. Then he searched the great royal bed itself and found a slate-board lying beneath Phra Narai's couch. On it was drawn the image of the ten-faced yaksha. The king's brother was shaken and afraid. "Who would dare this, not fearing death, and bring offense to the royal feet? If I hide it, I fear danger from my royal elder brother." Thinking this, he took up the board and presented it to righteous Phra Chakri.

Then Phra Harirak saw the image of Thotsakan. Anger blazed in him like fire, and he issued the royal command: "You women, small and great attendants! Who drew the asura's image and hid it under my sleeping place?"

The women attendants at left and right were terrified of royal punishment and could hardly keep their senses. If they told the truth plainly, they feared for the chief queen. They looked at one another, not knowing what to say. The king asked many times, but not one could open her mouth. When he stamped his foot, they were startled, bowed, and lowered their faces.

Then beloved Sita saw the king furious and thought: "If I stay silent now, the palace women will bear the fault. The punishment of the mighty lord will cling to them. And all will criticize and slander me, saying I did the deed and then kept silent, letting others suffer danger without pity." Having thought this, she crawled in before him, bowed at his feet, and said, "As for the image of the asura Thotsakan, I have violated your command. One maidservant came with a trick and asked about the yaksha. She begged me to draw the lord of Lanka before the royal women. I was careless and did not understand. She pressed hard to see it, so I drew it. Just then that woman vanished, and all the women were frightened together. We tried to erase it, but however much we tried, it would not disappear. The yaksha's image only grew clearer. When you came to the jeweled landing, I hid it under the sleeping place."

Then the lord of the three worlds grew even more angry. He stamped his foot, pointed at her face, and said, "Look at you, wicked thing, vile, ugly, and gross! Wasted was the love I gave you like my own heart. How could this happen? You secretly drew the image of your lover to delight yourself; when seen, you cast the blame on a slave woman. Alas, I did not know you were black-hearted. I lost my way in going to bring you back. I fought nearly to the point of death, and you returned as a two-faced evil. Had I known you loved the asura, why would I have brought you with me?" Then he ordered Phra Lak: "Sita cannot be kept alive. Take her away quickly and kill her this very night. Do not let the three royal mothers know. Cut out her heart and bring it to me, so I may see the heart of this ill-starred adulteress, this unrighteous woman."

Then radiant Phra Lak heard the Garuda-borne lord command him to end Sita's life. He was stunned as if Yama himself had struck the crown of his head. He thought to beg pardon for the lady, but saw that the king's anger was still severe. Forced to receive the command of the discus-bearing avatar, he led his noble elder sister away from Rama's sight.

When they had passed beyond the royal gaze, he bowed his head at the beautiful lady's feet and said, "This is the karma you have made, elder sister. If I were to ask forgiveness for you, he is still far too angry." As he spoke, he wept in grief, nearly as if his life would leave him.

Then pitiful Sita said to victorious Phra Lak: "The lord has shown me no mercy. My only fault was drawing the image of the ten-faced one; I did not do it because I loved the yaksha. I told the truth of what happened, but he did not ask and examine the truth. He ordered me struck down and called me wicked in every way. I am helpless; I cannot object. I will fall silent and die according to my karma. In the way of all worlds, whoever is born must die." Then she asked him, "Where will you kill me, dear younger brother?"

Then noble Phra Lak sobbed as he answered the queen: "I will take you beyond the city. Here we are still within the town, and people would speak noisily. The citizens, knowing neither good nor bad, would shame us and slander." Speaking through tears, he led the beloved chief queen quickly out from the city along the forest road.

When they reached Kalawat forest, they saw a great high banyan tree. He led his elder sister into the shade near the foot of a mountain.

Then beautiful Sita sat down in grief and said to Phra Lak: "Today I must leave you, beloved brother. We have endured hardship together. From now on I shall not see your face. My fault is only this small mistake; it should not reach death. Whatever evil anyone imagines, your own heart knows the truth. Even if my life must end, I will hold to truth and die in plain witness. Kill me then, Lak, so love and karma between us end today."

Then the radiant younger brother heard the royal lady's words and sorrowfully answered her: "You have held truth and purity. My heart knows it without doubt. Even when Thotsakan stole you to Lanka, you kept your body unstained. You are bright like the jewel of the world-ruler; gods and ascetics know it. Had there been any fault, corruption, or stain, your life would have ended when you entered the fire. This comes from former karma that has struck us now. I cannot think of taking your life. Go, then, according to your karma." Speaking in deep grief, tears streaming from both eyes, he lowered his face to her feet, sorrowing as if life were over.

Then heavenly Sita saw the younger brother in bitter grief and comforted him at once: "Alas, Lak, I thank you deeply for your love for me. The king commanded you to take my life, yet through compassion you would not kill me and would let me go. But when you attend the mighty lord, where will you get a heart to give him? You have disobeyed the king's command; danger will come upon you. Since you show me such compassion, your goodness weighs heavily on me. I do not ask to endure suffering. Kill me quickly now."

Then radiant Phra Lak bowed his head and answered her: "How could I kill my elder sister? And besides, you are pregnant, the months and days grown great. I pity the beloved grandchild, whether girl or boy we do not yet know. It would be pitiful for the child to die along with you; I would grieve for it deeply. Go according to your karma. I will return to the city and turn the matter aside when I bow before the mighty lord. If there is fault, I will take it on my head. I will repay your goodness with loyalty, not caring for my life."

Then heavenly Sita heard her younger brother's lament and thought: "Alas, I pity Lak. He is honest, loyal, and pure. How could he kill me when he has such compassion? I must invent a bitter trick, using rough and false words. I will reproach him and speak deceitfully, making him angry, shamed, and hurt. Then his pity will end and he may turn and kill me." Thinking this, she said, "So this is how it is, Lak? You are the executioner carrying the royal punishment of the discus-bearing lord. Yet you do not follow Phra Harirak's command, but delay so you may harm me. You see I am condemned and alone in your power. You speak sweet words as if everything were true. I understand this thought of yours: here in the deep forest no one will know or see. So you hold me back to make me suffer in shame. Is that good? Tell me."

Then Phra Lak, the younger brother of the solar line, heard her words as if lightning had struck the body of the mighty lord. He fell to the ground, darkened and maddened in mind, his breast burning with poison. He thought everything she said might be true: "Such words are the way of the world. She and I have come alone into the forest. No one knows good or bad. By ordinary custom, when a woman and a man are alone beyond every witness, who will understand my heart? People will hunger to slander. I must take her life; only then will stain end hereafter." Thinking this, he drew the mighty royal sword, raised it, and was about to kill the lady.

Then he thought again in wonder and pity of the child in her womb. His heart burned; he was stricken and shaken. Tears poured in streams. He could hardly hold himself upright. The sword slipped from his hand, and the king's brother sank down in grief.

When he recovered his senses, he raised joined hands above his head, bowed at her feet, and begged that no enmity remain between them. "I must obey the command of the divine avatar." Then he grasped the bright royal blade to strike down the queen.

He lifted it, then stood stunned, looking at the chief queen. He did not know how to take her life, and the king's brother sat down again in grief.

Then, fearing the discus-bearing lord, he forced down his sorrow, rose, swung the mighty blade, shut his eyes, and struck.

The jeweled sword, mighty weapon though it was, slipped from his hand without his knowing. Thinking his elder sister had died, he fainted and lost consciousness.

Then lovely Sita, when Phra Lak had struck to take her life, felt no wound on her body. By the power of the lady's truth and the merit of her sons, the sword changed into a garland, floated to her, and slipped around her neck. Seeing Phra Lak fallen unconscious and unable to know anything, she thought his life was finished. Startled, she embraced him and mourned.

Sobbing, she said, "Alas, beloved companion of hardship! You endured hardship with me. When we lived by the Godavari and Phra Chakri followed the deer, whatever harsh words I spoke to you, dear heart, you did not hold them as fault. In the war at Lanka, the weapons of the wicked struck you five times, yet your life did not end, and you returned to dwell in the royal city. You enjoyed happiness only for a little while. Now, because of my careless thought, because I drew the image of the ten-faced yaksha, the avatar ordered you to kill me, and you feared no danger, willing to die in my place. The goodness of my younger brother cannot be matched by earth or sky. If your life is gone, I will die after you." Wailing, weeping, grief-stricken as if her breast were broken, she raised her fists, beat her chest, and the noble lady fainted at once.

When dew touched her body, its coolness soaked through the beautiful lady's limbs. She revived and regained her senses, touched Phra Lak's body, and felt that he was still warm and had not died. She raised her hands and made a vow of truth, calling the gods in every direction: "By the power of my truth, straight and just, without corruption, let radiant Phra Lak return to life now."

After making the vow, she stroked the radiant younger brother's body. By that truth, it became divine water and soaked into his limbs.

Then Phra Lak of the solar line revived and regained his senses. Seeing that his noble elder sister had not died, he rejoiced, lifted his hands in homage, and asked: "How is it that you are not dead, elder sister? This jeweled sword has an edge sharp as acid and fierce in strength; if it struck iron or diamond, those would be shattered. Yet it vanished from my hand. And this golden garland, lovely with heavenly pollen, hangs around your neck like an ornament. Where did you obtain it?"

Then beloved Sita heard and said, "When my dear one struck me, I thought my life was finished and I would leave you for heaven. But by the power of truth, firm and righteous, the sword did not wound my body. Instead it became this garland and slipped around my neck." Saying this, she removed the flower-garland and handed it to the noble younger brother.

Then Phra Lak received the golden garland from the noble lady's hand, and it changed back into the royal sword. The righteous lord raised his hands in homage and said with a joyful heart: "Your truth is steadfast, noble, and glorious, clear like a jewel without stain. You surpass all women in the world. This is a great wonder, made plain through the ten directions. Though you must leave the city, I see that no danger will come to you. Go according to former karma. Do not grieve or burn your heart. I will return to the victorious city before the sun rises."

Then heavenly Sita heard the younger brother, companion of her life, and was choked with grief. She said, "Listen, beloved Lak. I will go according to my karma and suffer in the forest. But when you return to glorious Ayutthaya, how will you get the heart to present to the king as proof? The lord will be angry and punish you by his sudden will. You may lose your life. What will you do, beloved?"

Then noble Phra Lak answered through sobs: "Why be anxious for me? I pity only my elder sister. You will go alone in the middle of the forest, endure rain and sun in suffering, helpless in the wild. To whom will you turn for shelter? Where will you live and eat? Your distress will be immeasurable." Having said this, he bowed his head and prostrated at her feet, tears covering his face. Then the king's brother hardened his heart and departed.

He stopped and stood looking back. Seeing his elder sister grieving and weeping, his heart grew still more sorrowful and stricken. The righteous lord returned and embraced her feet.

Weeping, he lifted his hands above his head and proclaimed to all gods, great and small, to the spirits of the forest and of the mountain streams, cliffs, thickets, and groves; to Thao Hatsanai the king of gods, to lotus-seated Brahma on his swan, to Virupaksa, Vessavana, powerful Virulhaka, and Dhatarattha; to Phra Isuan dwelling on splendid Kailasa, to the six heavens and the sixteen realms, and to every direction: "Have mercy. I entrust my royal elder sister to you. Let no danger come to her in the forest." Wailing, he bowed farewell and went along the forest path.

He walked among the trees by the bright moonlight, his heart cooled and yet full of longing for his elder sister Sita. "In former times we three endured hardship together as we went through the forest. We endured rain and the sun's heat, but we had one another for speech along the way. Now my elder sister is alone. She will look around and see no one. In the desolate silence of the forest she will be startled, trembling in fear. Four-footed and two-footed creatures will cry out and shriek, frightening her heart. She will sleep on dust and sand, and the suffering of her body will be great. Alas, it is pitiful to think of her suffering as if her breast were broken. Who will help lead the noble lady to a shelter beyond danger? And she is pregnant. How can she go through the forest?" Lamenting with a stricken heart, the king's brother sank down in grief.

Then on the side of radiant Thao Hatsanai, he was in brilliant Vejayanta with heavenly women about him. A burning arose in his body as if bright fire were scorching his flesh. He looked down with divine sight to the wide earth and saw Phra Lak turning back toward the royal city. If he did not have the young queen's heart, the avatar would punish him. Sita, meanwhile, was grieving in separation, with no refuge in the forest, and pregnant with her child. She would suffer grievously and might collapse and die in the woods. "I must go help and save their lives, so both royal ones will be free from danger."

Thinking this, he went from the golden Meru mansion, flying swiftly through the sky, and descended to the earth.

By his divine power he made a deer lie dead at the edge of the forest beside Phra Lak's road.

Then Phra Lak of the solar line, once his grief had eased, went on his way. He glanced aside and saw the deer lying dead at the edge of the trees. Looking closely, he knew it was dead and was pleased, for it matched his need. "I should cut out its heart and present it to glorious Phra Chakrit in place of the queen's heart, according to the royal command." Thinking this, he turned under the great tree, drew his victorious jeweled sword, and cut out the deer's heart.

After obtaining it, he went from the shade of the leafy tree and hurried on foot to glorious Ayutthaya.

When he arrived, he crawled into audience, bowed at the royal feet, and presented the heart before the women attendants.

Then jeweled Phra Chakri reached out and received the heart. The righteous lord examined it, believing it to be Sita's heart and not knowing it was a deer's. He said to Phra Lak, companion of his heart, "Do you see now, younger brother? Even its heart is deranged, like the heart of a beast in the forest. How could she not love the asura? Alas, both you and I were deceived, not knowing she was a deluded traitor." Having spoken, he went into the golden chamber.

Then young beloved Sita watched Phra Lak until he vanished. Her heart was empty and lonely. She heard monkeys and langurs rumbling, owls crying through the forest, gibbons wailing for their mates, jungle fowl starting awake and calling, screech-owls crying harshly, forest birds calling together, cicadas chirping in lonely sound, tigers roaring, and elephants groaning as they tugged and broke bamboo. Fear made her tremble, and the tender lady lowered her face in sorrow.

Then she forced her heart to quiet its grief, dried the tears from both eyes, and thought wisely: "If I stay here as one woman alone in the wilderness, I will become food for tigers and lions. I must endure and go on until I find a refuge." Thinking this, she moved gracefully, surpassing the women of the three worlds, raised her hands to the guardian gods, and went on by the moonlight.

As she walked, she mourned bitterly, tears streaming from her eyes. Her breast burned; she lamented and cried: "Alas, what karma has struck me? What should not have happened has happened, and I fall into utter hardship. Before, I left the royal city and suffered in the high forest. Now I come alone through the woods. How can I keep my life? Alas, beloved younger brother, you have gone back without my heart to present to Phra Chakri. Surely you will lose your life. I think I would rather hold my breath and die, then be born anew in heaven. Yet I pity the child in my womb, beloved one, who would die with me. By the merit and former goodness of my child, may all the gods protect him and let no danger come." Lamenting, swollen with grief, tears streaming, her heart desolate and lonely, she went through the mountain forest.

Then radiant Thao Hatsanai, after Phra Lak had returned to the city, transformed his own body by power.

At once he became a buffalo, more beautiful than any in the forest. Lifting ears and tail, he came toward Sita.

Drawing near, he spoke: "Look here, beautiful beloved. Why are you grieving and wandering in the forest, alone and without a companion? Where are your home and dwelling? Do you not fear the wild creatures of the forest? Where are you going, noble lady?"

Then lovely Sita heard the buffalo speak and told him the matter. "I am the queen of Phra Ram; my name is beloved Sita. The lord ordered punishment upon me." She told the whole story completely. "Helpless, I must wander alone, with no settled place, suffering the hardship of the wild and distressed in heart. Brother buffalo, have mercy. Help take me to a place of refuge. Wherever a holy rishi lives, there I may dwell and preserve my life."

Then the buffalo who was radiant Hatsanai heard and answered: "Do not grieve or burn in spirit. I will take you to meet an ascetic who keeps strong vows and deep meditation. Walk after me." Saying this, he led the way.

At dawn they reached the hermitage of the great perfected teacher. Then Lord Hatsanai returned to his heavenly mansion.

Then young pitiful Sita saw the hermitage of the sage and rejoiced that her thought had been fulfilled. Her grief of separation eased a little and her heart grew clear. She entered and offered homage to the holy ascetic at his hut.

Then Wachamruek Rishi saw the chief queen and was greatly puzzled. He said, "Listen, noble lady, whose face shines like the moon. Where are your home and dwelling? What is your name? Why have you come alone, desolate and helpless in the forest? Do you not fear the lions and beasts that may harm you? I see this as a wonder."

Then heavenly Sita heard the righteous ascetic's words, bowed her head with joined hands, and explained the matter: "I am called Sita, lovely lady. I am the chief queen of Phra Chakri, the avatar who rules Ayutthaya and upholds the royal city. At first I went to bathe in the water with the women. A demoness disguised herself like a familiar maidservant and begged me to draw the lord of Lanka. I was naive and let myself be led. After I drew it, the image would not disappear, and great turmoil came from it. Phra Ram grew suspicious, thinking I loved Thotsakan. He ordered Phra Lak to bring me out and destroy my life. The younger brother struck me with the sword, but the sword became a garland. Seeing the truth plainly, he sent me into the forest. By merit I have found you, holy sage. I entrust my life to you."

Then the ascetic, master of discipline, heard Sita's words and felt compassion. He said, "Look at Phra Ram: he would not ask questions and make the truth plain. When Thotsakan stole you away, the king pursued and destroyed the asuras. When he recovered you, you entered the fire and swore the truth, cutting off all suspicion and doubt. It was plain throughout heaven and earth. Why should he now think mistrustfully without cause? This has happened because of karma, forcing you to be separated from the royal city. Do not be anxious or burn in grief. I will care for you, dear child, without stain."

When the conversation was finished, the great rishi recited a powerful spell and at once created a fragrant hut.

Suddenly a hermitage arose beneath the great tree, with soft bedding, radiant seats, curtains, netting, and all needed things complete.

Then heavenly Sita lived with the great righteous ascetic in the forest hut. She served him morning and evening constantly, as if he were the father who had given her birth, bringing washing water, drinking water, and fire, and sweeping the hut at all times. When her pregnancy completed ten months and she was about to give birth to the royal son, pain came through her whole body as if her life would end.

Then Wachamruek, the great teacher, knew that gentle Sita was about to bear her beloved child. He was startled and ran about the hermitage in confusion, deeply distressed and worried as if his breast were broken. When he tried to consecrate water, he stammered and faltered; the holy ascetic could hardly keep his senses.
