This is the one-hundred-fifth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Indra and the heavenly women helping Sita give birth to Mongkut, Sita returning for the child after a forest monkey's rebuke, Wachamruek Rishi creating Lop from a drawn image, the naming and raising of the two princes, their Vedic and archery training, Mongkut's test-shot against the great rang tree, the three worlds trembling from the shot, Rama's omen council, and Hanuman summoning Bharata and Shatrughna from Kaikeya to Ayutthaya.

Mongkut and Lop Are Born and Trained

Now the tale turns to radiant Thao Hatsanai, seated on the shining divine throne in great Vejayanta, with groups of apsaras attending his feet in happiness and peace. Suddenly his heart burned as with the fire at the end of the age. The righteous lord looked down with divine sight and knew that Queen Lakshmi-Sita was about to give birth to her son. He gave a kingly command to the four young ladies and to a hundred thousand heavenly women, then went from Vejayanta with the attending gods and flew down by his power.

When they reached the hermitage hall, they saw the beautiful chief queen in pain through all her limbs, as if her life would end. He ordered his four queens and all the heavenly women, small and great: "Go in and help the lady. Do not let her body suffer."

Then beloved Suchada, Suchitra, Suthamma, and lovely Sunantha received Thao Hatsanet's command. They led the young heavenly women in together, surrounded Sita, supported her pregnancy, and turned the birth for the queen.

Then lovely Sita, seeing the heavenly women, rejoiced and slowly recovered her senses. At dawn, when the sun shone bright and the birth-wind blew strongly, the auspicious hour arrived, and the noble lady gave birth to her beloved child.

He was a pure and lovely boy, more beautiful than the humans of the three worlds. His form was excellent and splendid, worthy of the solar line of the gods. He was like a whole ingot of gold perfectly cast, gentle and delightful to the heart, resembling his Garuda-borne father in every part of his body.

Then radiant Thao Hatsanai saw Sita give birth to her son. He held the victorious great conch and blew it until the sound thundered through the forest. Queen Suchada received the prince, bathed him in the jeweled ocean filled with sweet fragrant divine water, then lifted the scion of the avatar and placed him on a bright jeweled tray, spread with warm, soft, shining cloth. She set him before his mother in the leaf-hut.

Then beloved Sita saw her royal son, a human jewel with radiant face. Joy and blessedness filled her beyond comparison; her love and tenderness for the prince were immeasurable.

Then the lord of Meru and the heavenly city, with lovely apsaras and all the attending gods, each blessed the child and wished him long life: "May his power shine like his father's, so the world may take refuge in him hereafter." When this was done, the thousand-eyed lord led the lesser and greater gods swiftly through the sky back to the divine mansion.

Then young pitiful Sita, when Lord Maghavan had returned to his heavenly mansion, looked around and saw no one who could be her companion in the forest. Alone and solitary, the noble lady's heart was stricken. She lifted her son into her lap, embraced him, kissed and stroked his face, and wept. "Alas, you were born when your mother is destitute, living in Himavanta forest. You are fatherless, kinless, separated from wealth and royal fortune. Had you been born in the moon-bright palace, the solar lineage would have surrounded you. Your three grandmothers would have cherished you; nurses and milk-mothers would have cared for you. At bathing and eating there would have been plenty, and at sleep they would have sung you to rest. Alas, you have come into hardship, suffering, and helplessness. Yet by your merit the gods have helped in this. They created cloth and royal garments as a support for your beautiful body. Your mother has nothing. Only this one ring came with me; I will use it for your birth-blessing." Saying this, she took it off and tied it to the prince's wrist. "May you have mighty power like your bow-bearing father." Then she laid him down to sleep and went out.

When she reached her teacher's hermitage, the young lady raised her hands above her head and said, "I ask leave to go down to the bathing place. I entrust this young grandson to you. Please care for him and let no danger come, so he may one day serve at the sage's feet."

Then Wachamruek Rishi heard the chief queen and spoke: "Go, noble lady. As for your beloved son, leave the care to me, his grandfather. I will guard him so no event harms him."

Then pitiful young Sita bowed at her teacher's feet and hurried away.

When she reached the water place at the foot of the mountain, she saw forest monkeys leaping and climbing through the trees. Their young clung to their bodies as they ran; some bounded and snatched fruit. She said, "Hey, foolish monkeys! Why bring children who have barely opened their eyes? They cling all over your bodies, front and back. How can you guard them? You leap and spring from branch to branch; it frightens me to see. Is this the way of creatures in the world? Do any kinds do such things? This looks twisted and wrong, as if you would throw your children away."

Then a forest monkey female heard and answered at once: "These children of ours cling close; that has always been the way. Even if we suffer hardship, it is better. Whatever comes, we are not afraid, because they are near our bodies and we see them with our own eyes. As for you, dull woman, you turn and blame others. You yourself are careless and light-minded, leaving your child in a hut. The ascetic sits with eyes shut in meditation. If deer, tigers, or lions bite and eat him, his life will end. Wasted was the pregnancy you carried."

Then young beloved Sita heard the monkey's speech. Seeing that it was true, she was startled. "Alas, this is shameful. I am not even as knowing as an animal. I left the beloved child from my own breast." Thinking this, she went back up at once.

When she arrived, she stroked and kissed his face, took her beautiful beloved son up, left the fragrant hut, and came to the bank of the Ganga.

Then the great teacher of strong meditation sat in concentration, gathering his spirit. In meditation he grew drowsy and forgot himself, and did not watch the prince. After a while he remembered, looked at the cradle, and saw it empty. He was shocked. "Something is wrong; this is no good. The lady entrusted her child to me in the cradle. What thing has suddenly come to destroy him? Alas, I pity the prince, and pitiful Sita too. If she returns and does not see her beloved son, the noble lady will blame me bitterly. She will weep in grief and may die." Thinking this, he seized his staff, walked about looking and trembling, searched all around the forest grounds, and, finding nothing, returned.

He sat still, stunned, his mind burning like fire and his heart choked within his breast. Then swift wisdom came to him. "Let it be. I will set up a rite and revive a royal son as a substitute for the lady's child before she returns to the hut." Having thought this, the clever teacher drew the radiant prince's image on a board at once, then set the fire-offering in a ritual fire pit.

Then beloved young Sita reached the water place. She took her royal son down into the water, bathed away all impurity, lifted the honored solar-line child, and walked back up.

When she reached the hermitage hall, the beloved chief queen bowed at the siddha's feet before the forest hut.

Then Wachamruek Rishi was busy setting up the rite in the forest hall. Seeing noble Sita carrying her beloved child in and bowing before him, the righteous sage said, "When did you take away your child, whom you had put in the cradle and entrusted to me? You did not tell me or make it clear. You made me search in distress until I set up this great fire-rite to revive a prince as a substitute for your son. Since your child is still well, my business as rishi is over. Care for him well, and now I will return to meditation." Having said this, the teacher picked up the board on which he had drawn the prince, intending to erase the picture before the lady.

Then lovely Sita bowed her head with joined hands and begged, "Please have mercy. Since you have drawn him, why erase him? Revive him as a companion for your grandson. He is alone and lonely in this deep forest. Please show compassion."

Then the great ascetic of strong vows heard Sita's words and answered: "What you say is good. If you will care for him, I will revive him." As he spoke, he stirred the fire and, gathering his mind, recited a powerful spell.

He placed the image in the middle of the blazing fire. By the sage's spell, a loud wonder arose. Clouds and mist thickened in every direction, and the sky grew dark. Then the sun's light cleared and brightened, and immediately a prince came into being.

He recited a spell to quench the fire pit. Phra Phirun's rain fell in a pattering shower. The sage went in, took up the prince, and gave him to Sita at once.

Then he said to the noble lady, "Grandfather has revived this prince for you. He is the younger brother of your son. Love him as if he had been born in your womb."

Then heavenly Sita received the prince from the righteous sage. The noble lady held him close against her body and supported the two side by side. They looked excellent and radiant together, like two beautiful cast-gold images. Looking at the younger, he resembled the elder in every way: face, body, hands, and neck, as if made from the same mold. She loved him almost beyond life itself, as if he had been born in the queen's own womb. Then she said to the righteous sage, "Today is an auspicious victorious hour. I ask your mighty holiness to give names that will bring welfare to both."

Then the disciplined ascetic examined the auspicious time and the ages of the two princes, seeking names of royal blessing, long life, and good company, free from ill omen. He said, "The child from your womb, the elder, shall have the name Mongkut. As for the image revived in the fire, the younger shall be named Lop. May the two solar-line princes flourish and carry on the line of world-rulers. May their power, accomplishment, and greatness have no equal in the three worlds."

Then heavenly Sita bowed her head in reverence and rejoiced. She lifted the two solar-line boys, took leave of the great rishi, and walked back to her hut.

When she arrived, she fed them milk and delighted in them with love. She loved the two sons more than her own heart. Morning and evening she nourished, supported, and cared for them, carrying them gently and never roughly. She waited on their faces and guarded and raised her beloved children at all times.

Then the two royal sons gradually grew in life without disease troubling them. The brothers went about playing happily morning and evening within the hermitage grounds of the sage of knowledge.

Then young pitiful Sita lived with her teacher as if with her glorious father. Morning and evening she diligently served him and did nothing to disturb his mind. She swept the hall, terrace, and forest walking-place, gathered tree-fruit, and drew both washing water and drinking water every day, in gratitude to the sage. When the dear young boys had gradually grown, both beautiful princes reached ten years of age. Their forms were lovely and excellent, and she loved them deeply, as if they were her left and right eyes. She led the two royal princes to her teacher's hall.

When she arrived, she raised her hands and bowed to the wise ascetic. "These two young grandsons are now ten years old. They still do not know the arts and sciences fitting for the bright solar royal line. If they roam in the forest, danger may happen and harm them. Please, grandfather, kindly teach them until they are skilled in archery, arts, and knowledge, so they can guard against danger later."

Then Wachamruek, the great teacher, heard and answered, "Do not be anxious, noble lady. As for arts and knowledge, leave that work to me. I will teach them according to the lasting way of the Three Vedas, so their power shines like the fire at the end of the age."

Then heavenly Sita heard the great righteous sage and rejoiced. She said to the two young princes, "Beloved children, dear to your mother, work hard to study the knowledge, so your fame may appear on earth." Then she bowed her head, took leave at the great rishi's feet, and returned to her dwelling.

Then Wachamruek, the great teacher, had the two beloved grandsons study the Three Vedas and the sciences: doctrines, hidden stratagems, every mantra and spell, from beginning to end, according to the worldly knowledge of men.

Then the two beautiful brother-princes studied the sage's arts and became wise, skillful, and quick. They memorized all spells, great mantras, hidden devices, and stratagems, reciting them by mouth and heart, and completed the knowledge of the Three Vedas.

Then the great teacher of strong meditation saw that the young princes had mastered the arts well. He took soft young bamboo and carved it into victorious bows. For Phra Lop, the younger brother and companion of the elder's life, he added three arrows bundled with it. "Both of you, practice shooting until you are accurate and skilled." Then he taught the victorious art with the matching magic of the Vedas.

Then the two solar-line princes received the bows from the righteous sage's hands, each taking one with joy. They bowed with joined fingers at his lotus feet, took leave of the great sage, and went out together.

When they reached the walking ground beneath the shade of a great asoka tree, they plucked flowers and set them in rows fifty wa away. Each raised his bow and aimed to shoot the flowers. Both drew and released, accurate as if already fully skilled.

The arrows flew straight and true, and the asoka flowers were broken where they stood. Each shot struck every time. They clapped their hands and laughed aloud in delight.

Then the great teacher saw that the two beloved grandsons had become skilled in archery. He said, "These two dear grandsons are sharp, wise, and brave. They will carry on the solar line of the avatar and become leaders of the world. I must prepare a fire-rite according to glorious Vishnu-Veda and consecrate powerful arrows for the two brothers to keep with them." Thinking this, the ascetic fixed the auspicious time, set the blazing fire pit, gathered his mind, and recited the mighty spell.

By the power of the spell and of the self-born lord, the earth roared through the world. The fire blazed strong and bright like the flame at the end of the age. A divine youth appeared in the middle of the sacrifice, holding powerful Rudra-like arrows: six arrows and two bows.

The ascetic rejoiced, reached out, and took the shining weapons from the fire. The divine youth of the rite vanished. Then he gave the bows and arrows, whose power could shake the earth, to the two beloved grandsons. "Keep these in your hands. Let fierce enemies, however powerful and brave in battle, who come to break and strike you, be defeated by both your hands."

Then the two brave princes received the arrows and their grandfather's blessing, rejoicing greatly. They raised their hands in homage, placed his feet upon their heads, and said, "Your goodness is beyond description. Even if earth, sky, ocean, and the three worlds were weighed in comparison, they would not equal it. We have only our lives to lay beneath your feet, grandfather." Then the two royal princes took leave of their meditation-strong teacher, left the leaf-hall, and came to their mother's dwelling.

Then lovely Sita saw her two sons, companions of her life, skilled in the Three Vedas and in the science of victorious arrows, quick, brave, and expert. Her joy was immeasurable, and the noble lady cherished her beloved children.

Then the Narai-scion of the solar line, holder of the discus-lineage, and lovely Phra Lop the younger brother lay in their mother's lap. They cherished one another and rejoiced. Then they said, "We two children ask leave of our mother to go wander, to see the four-footed and two-footed creatures, the trees, ravines, slopes, and mountains. It will delight our hearts, and before long, when the afternoon inclines, we will return."

Then beloved Sita heard her sons ask leave. The noble lady blessed them and said, "If you two dear boys want to roam the forest, go as you wish. But do not go far. You might meet asuras or forest spirits who would come to strike and harm you, or base fierce animals and tigers. Beloved children, be on guard together."

Then Phra Mongkut of the solar line and lovely Phra Lop the younger brother bowed happily with joined hands. Each took his powerful bow and arrow, whose force shook earth and sky, smiled with bright face, and walked along the forest path.

[Forest Viewing]

The two princes looked on the trees crowded in rows through the forest. Some bore fruit mixed with flowers, hanging in graceful drooping clusters. Some fruit was raw, some half-ripe, some fully ripe, sweet and fragrant; some blossoms opened and shed pollen. The wind carried the fragrance abroad, and they reached out their hands to pluck and eat with delight. Winding through the mountain forest, among peaks, ravines, slopes, and heights, they saw springs gushing and spraying, cool and clear like streams from a water-pipe. Cicadas and crickets called continually, and birds cried together. Some birds hopped, climbed, danced on branches, flew, and ate fruit from the trees. They watched herds of four-footed creatures grazing in groups: elephants moving along the stream, some lifting trunks and tugging bamboo apart; wild cattle, lions, kirin, deer, tigers watching deer at the salt-lick. The two princes wandered in delight until they entered the Himavanta forest.

They came upon a great rang tree, huge and high, its leaves covering the sun. Its girth was said to be a hundred thousand arm-spans, and it stood as lord in the middle of the forest. Phra Mongkut said to Phra Lop, "We have found this great rang with vast branches. I will test the mighty art and break this tree, so we may see how it shatters and falls, and so the power of grandfather's glorious arrows may be plain to us today." Saying this, he raised the bow, beautiful like his divine father, drew the string tight, aimed, and released.

The shot struck the great rang tree. It could not withstand the force. By that power it split, broke, and crashed down, the sound thundering and shaking the whole earth.

Then all classes of gods, gandharvas, Garudas, Vasuki and the nagas, asuras, and kings in every city heard the terrifying thunder and trembled through the ten directions. It was like the wind at the end of the age coming to destroy the three worlds. It was a great wonder; none could tell whether it meant good or evil. Each was frightened and startled throughout the three realms. Gods came out of their golden mansions; heavenly women shrieked in uproar. Young Garudas fell from the simphali tree, and the asuras at Trikuta were thrown into confusion. All humans grew pale, shaking and losing heart. Nagas hid in fear of death, scattering through the underworld. All creatures on earth, lions, elephants, and great beasts, ran, leapt, and bounded, tumbling into ravines and streams in disorder. Birds flew in swarms and cried loudly, unable to stay still. The three worlds were in uproar and fear, senseless with alarm.

Then the two radiant young princes saw the rang tree crushed to dust by the power of the victorious arrow. They rejoiced, laughed, and clapped their hands. Then they gathered ripe, sweet, fragrant forest fruits: mangosteen, sapodilla, custard apple, longan, placing them in a cloth bundle, and gathered blossoms and garlands too. Afterward they returned to the hut.

When they arrived, the two solar-line boys bowed at the holy feet and offered the tree-fruits and flowers to the sage, their teacher.

Then the wise holy ascetic saw the two young princes return to the hall and asked, "How was it, beloved grandsons? You went to play in the forest. I heard a wonder: a sound like thunder striking a hundred thousand times, making all tremble. Earth and sky became smoke; the whole land roared. I thought this was very strange. Did you, dear grandsons, test your arrows, so the sky thundered? Nothing like this has happened before."

Then radiant Phra Mongkut answered the sage: "We two grandsons were wandering and came to the Himavanta forest. We found a tall great rang tree. I tested the victorious art, thinking that tree might withstand the power. By your power, grandfather, the tree could not bear the magic arrow. It snapped, with a sound thundering through every direction. We were joyful in heart."

Then Wachamruek Rishi heard the two princes speak and rejoiced. He raised his hand, stroked their backs and faces, and said, "Dear grandsons, beloved jewels of my eyes: this tree was vast. It has stood from the setting of earth, sky, and heavenly realms, together with Mount Meru and the mountains. Its name is the great Lord Rang. Though all the earth had mighty power, it could not destroy it like this. It seemed it would last as long as earth and sky, yet it has been broken to pieces by your shining arrow. You possess such power that no one in the three worlds can withstand you." Then he blessed them: may their power surpass the sun's, may their might subdue the whole universe, and may they be leaders upholding the world.

Then the two solar-line lords bowed their heads and received the blessing with joy. Then they took leave and went to attend their mother.

They bent their heads in homage at both of her feet and told her what had happened in the forest and how they had tested the victorious art.

Then beloved Sita heard her two sons and was as happy as if she had gained heaven. She embraced and kissed them with love, held them in her lap on left and right, blessed them, and said, "Jewels of your mother's eyes, it was not in vain that you were born in the bright solar line. Though still so young, your power surpasses the three worlds. You wielded the arrow and struck down the great rang until all the world trembled, like your victorious father when he lifted the bow in Mithila. I heard the sound of your magic arrow, just as you say. But former karma still clings, and so we must live in this helpless state."

Then radiant Phra Mongkut heard his mother's words, raised his joined hands, and asked, "Your beloved children's father: what city is he lord of? What is his power that he raised the bow and shook the whole world? Why did our royal mother leave the city and live here in the forest, suffering such hardship? We are deeply puzzled."

Then lovely Sita heard her son speak. The queen sighed; tears gathered and covered her eyes. She could hardly open her mouth to explain. She embraced her son and told the story from the beginning: "Your beloved father is Narai, bearer of the discus, lordly avatar from the ocean of milk, born in the line of world-rulers. His name is Phra Ram Rames, supreme in power among kings, jewel-lord of Ayutthaya, grandson of mighty Atchaban. He has three younger brothers, all excellent in power, sons of King Thotsarot. Your mother was in Mithila city. Your father lifted the bow and won me as queen. To keep his father's truth for fourteen years, I followed him into the forest. Then the ten-headed yaksha lord stole your mother away and kept me in mighty Lanka. The king and Phra Lak his younger brother led monkey armies across the ocean, followed, fought the yakshas, and killed him, bringing me back to the city. Later another war arose. Your two uncles, bow-bearing lords, marched out and destroyed the enemy, winning Lanka and Maliwan under your father's feet. Glorious Ayutthaya was joyful like the many-layered heavens. I was pregnant with you, beloved child. One day the king went to roam the forest. A deceitful demoness came disguised as a slave woman, made a false appeal, and begged me to draw Thotsakan's image. Your father grew terribly angry and ordered Phra Lak to kill me, but I did not die. So I came to rely on the righteous sage." Having explained all, she mourned.

Then Phra Mongkut, her son, heard his royal mother. His spirit sorrowed; his heart was stricken. Grief filled him, tears streamed down, and he lowered his face in sorrow, unable to keep his senses.

Then on the side of radiant Phra Harirak, he came out among his ministers at the Phaichayon pavilion. He heard the thundering sound shaking earth and sky in uproar, terrifying every place as if the whole world were about to overturn. The generals, elder ministers, royal relatives of the solar line, lesser and greater, and the inner palace women were all frightened and could hardly keep their senses. The citizens everywhere cried out in uproar. Elephants and horses broke loose in confusion, and the king was troubled in spirit.

He ordered the chief police officer, "Go quickly and summon the royal teachers, priests, and astrologers. Have them all gather here."

The diligent police officer received the command of the Garuda-borne lord, bowed, and hurried away.

When he reached the houses of the elder and junior astrologer-teachers, he reported the command: "Come in quickly. Do not delay."

The honored astrologers learned that the lord of the city had summoned them, and they rose in disarray. One seized a formal cloth and put it on; another grabbed a belly-cloth and dropped it. One picked up a document case, spilling things along the way, then got the book of omens and hurried off.

Each crawled in to audience, bowed with joined hands, lay panting and still, and waited to hear the king's command.

Then the lord who subdued the three worlds saw the priests and astrologers and gave the royal command: "What is today's wonder, that every place shook? You who are wise and skilled, examine whether this event is evil or good."

The four priests and astrologers received Phra Chakri's command and busily consulted their scriptures.

Then they reported: "This wonder does not exactly fit the books. But an old record says that when the lord and his three younger brothers tested arrows before the royal father, the ten directions trembled. This time it seems someone powerful has been testing magical skill and learning. Let a written message be prepared and tied to a brave royal horse. Release the noble horse in divination and have Hanuman lead an army behind it. If anyone is loyal to the lotus feet of the discus-bearing lord, pillar of the three worlds, let that person bow respectfully, worship, and follow the custom. If anyone is proud and bold, seizes the royal horse, and rides it, that person is a rebel against Phra Chakri; let the army and soldiers capture him."

Then the solar-line Lord Narai heard and commanded, "What you say accords with dharma." Then he ordered the mighty son of the Wind: "Hurry to the realm of Kaikeya. Find my two younger brothers, companions of my life, so we may plan together to subdue royal enemies."

Then Phraya Anuchit, the noble monkey, received Phra Chakri's command, raised joined hands, and went out.

He showed his force and power until all ten directions trembled, flew swiftly into the sky, and went straight to the city of Kaikeya.

When he arrived, he crawled in to audience, raised his hands above his head, and reported the four-armed lord's command to the two solar-line kings.

Then Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut, brave in battle, heard the monkey lord and said, "On the day when that wonder arose, when the sky rumbled and the earth shook, we saw a strange sign and wished to attend Phra Chakri." Having spoken, they descended from the jeweled palace, moving gracefully to their grandfather's dwelling.

Each bent down in homage at the lotus feet on left and right and said, "Phra Chakri sent victorious Phraya Anuchit to summon your two grandsons to the royal seat of Ayutthaya to consult about the event that has arisen. We ask leave from your royal feet."

Then radiant King Kaikeya heard his two beloved grandsons and commanded them: "If Phra Chakri has summoned you, I see that a great war may arise. Go in glory and welfare. May enemies not remain to oppose you."

They levied the army into a battle formation in four bold, strong divisions. Elephant lords harnessed shield-faced elephants, holding hooks upright and moving with grace. Horse lords mounted horses, holding yak-tail lances and moving in display. Chariot lords rode shining golden chariots, holding bows and drawing strings in fierce pride. Commanders arranged the brave war-soldiers, officers and common fighters, black, strong, massive, and deep in ranks, all holding weapons. They set them by lines along the road, crowded on left and right, and yoked the adorned royal chariot waiting at the jeweled landing.

Then radiant Phra Phrot and his younger brother, companion of his life, went to the bathing place.

They bathed and refreshed their bodies; golden lotuses poured like rain. They wore sweet perfumes mixed with divine gold and rose-apple scents. They put on lower garments with raised borders, embroidered with jeweled dragon designs; their differently colored robes had Garuda-vine patterns, fluttering panels, and side cloths. Their upper garments were cloth-of-gold with small arm-panels set with jewels. Direction-plates, chest ornaments, engraved patterns, red-jeweled chains, golden armlets, and diamond rings shone on them. They wore great crowns and ear-ornaments, and grasped mighty bows like the fire at the end of the age. Beautiful in bearing and body, as if gods had descended from heaven, they left the shining jeweled palace, moved gracefully, and mounted the chariot.

O royal chariot: its rims and wheels were all emerald. Its soft curving yoke was graceful; tiers, carved panels, and floating throne shone. Garudas and lions, pavilion finials and hanging tassels, four faces bright with jewels, and five glittering spires dazzled the eye. Three pairs of conch-colored cloud-horses were harnessed to it. Phra Satrut, the younger brother, sat in front with the royal sword in service. The charioteer drove swiftly as the wind. High insignia, peacock parasols, and crossbars stood in rows; banners and golden streamers gleamed. Gongs and drums thundered in loud procession. Dust covered the earth. The warriors shouted until the sound rang out. The four-division army moved in strange power, hurrying onward.

When they reached royal Ayutthaya, they halted the lesser and greater troops. The two princes descended from the victorious chariot and went to attend Phra Chakri.
