This is the one-hundred-sixth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Rama releasing the royal horse, Bharata, Shatrughna, and Hanuman tracking it through the forest, Mongkut and Lop capturing and riding it, Hanuman being struck down and bound, Rama untying him and ordering battle, Mongkut countering Bharata's diamond-net and naga weapons, kings and army being bound by the noose arrow, Hanuman being thrown down again, and Mongkut being captured after Bharata's counterstroke while Lop escapes into the forest.

Mongkut Captures the Horse and Battles Rama's Army

Then the solar-line Lord Narai saw his two younger brothers, companions of his life, and commanded them: "Now a thorn has arisen in the land. The sound of an arrow has thundered and shaken all, as when we tested the victorious bow. Did you hear it, beloved brothers? It seems there are wicked enemies coming to attack the boundary of the kingdom. If we stay silent, those vile ones will grow bold in arrogance. I gathered the ministers, priests, Brahmans, and astrologers. They advised preparing a horse, hanging a royal letter on it, and releasing it. You two mighty ones, with Phraya Anuchit the great soldier, follow the trail of the swift horse along the forest road. If anyone proud and bold catches our tribute horse and rides it, that one is an enemy-thorn. My brothers, seize that person and bring him here."

Then Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut, the younger brothers, heard the royal command, bowed at his feet, and said: "When this great wonder arose, Kaikeya shook too. If you order us to raise the army and follow the horse, we will serve the feet of the radiant lord of the three worlds until life is gone and will not let dust trouble your lotus feet."

Then wise and brave Phra Chakri heard his victorious younger brothers and was as glad as if he had passed into heaven. He gave Phra Phrot the splendid diamond armor that Phra Akkhot had presented in the forest, and gave Phra Satrut the armor of Indra, able to protect against every divine weapon. When this was done, he blessed them: "Go in welfare and glory." Then he ordered Sumanthan the commander: "Quickly prepare the horse and tie on the fine royal letter. Release it today, according to the priests and astrologers."

Then the two wise and brave kings bowed their heads at the lotus feet and received the mighty celestial armor. The two Sumanthan commanders took leave at Phra Narai's feet and went from the jeweled throne hall to the pavilion together.

They harnessed the tribute horse with saddle and tack all of gold-threaded work. It was beautiful like a heavenly steed descended from Dusita. The scribe brought the golden box containing the fine royal letter and hung it around the neck of the noble horse, according to the royal command.

Then the honored priests and the groups of ministers circled lights around the blessed horse together.

When seven rounds were complete, they made the divination: "By the power of radiant Phra Narai, may all gods and guardian spirits move the mind of this horse. Let it go to meet the proud and bold person who made the worlds tremble, in whichever direction that person dwells."

When the horse-divination was finished and the bright sun shone clear, they saw a cloud shaped like two princes passing on the eastern side. The priest had the gongs struck, and shouts rang through every direction. The white-robed elders and Brahmans released the strong horse.

The tribute horse pranced in delight, cried out, and tested its step, lifting chest and face, ears raised and tail high as it went. Like a lordly lion showing power as it leaves its great cave, it bounded south around the victorious city three times. The gods moved the horse's mind, and it walked into the forest line, cutting across the path, straight toward Kalawat forest.

Then radiant Phraya Anuchit, when the horse had been released from the city, followed its trail. The monkey lord cut across the way, hiding among bushes and trees and avoiding the main road through the great forest. He kept the horse in sight from far off and did not draw near.

Then Phra Phrot of the solar line, bow in hand, when mighty Phraya Anuchit had gone after the horse, commanded and invited his noble younger brother. They put on shining battle dress, grasped their bows, moved gracefully, and mounted the jeweled chariot.

O jeweled royal chariot: it was made of nine bright jewels, with pierced patterned hubs and wheels and three-pointed victory flags on curving poles. Three pairs of noble horses were harnessed to it, fierce like lions. The younger brother sat in front with joined hands, while the charioteer drove like the wind. Royal parasols and standards stood in rows; the sound of gongs and drums filled the forest; troops pressed close together like ocean foam and crowded waves, their shouts seeming to shake the earth. Scouts and forest troops turned and threaded the way after it. Crossing streams, passing fields, valleys, and hills, they marched through the great forest, hurrying the strong army along the forest road.

Then on the side of the two radiant princes, they slept beside their mother in the forest hall. When the sun shone and the sky cleared, and the jeweled fowl flapped wings and crowed, they woke, washed their bright faces, bowed, and said to their mother, "Today we ask leave to go gather fruit in the forest. When the sun inclines in the afternoon, we will return to the forest hut."

Then lovely Sita heard her sons speak. The queen fell silent and thought in alarm. Fear and trembling filled her heart as if someone had torn out her heart and thrown it into a poisonous fire that spread its heat through every limb. Her hair bristled, both eyes twitched, and she saw the strange omen as a sign. She blessed her children and said, "On the day you two tested the bow, earth and sky thundered and shook. Your mother's breast burned like a banked fire, and I have thought of it without ceasing. Perhaps some solar-line king, fierce and mighty in power, has grown deluded and will come to seize and punish you. How could your mother keep her life? I would surely die. Today, do not go into the forest. Jewels of my heart, listen to your mother."

Then the two battle-brave princes heard their mother's words and answered in sorrowful appeal: "This forest region is like the edge of our own hut. If enemies or dangers arise, we have power and need not fear them. Mother, do not suffer anxiety, longing, or grief. When the sun inclines in the afternoon, we will come back together to the hut."

Then lovely Sita saw her sons sorrowing. The queen embraced them and sighed, raised her hands, dried her tears, and, in deep grief, stroked and kissed their faces and comforted them: "You are your mother's heart. War is hard, beloved children. You are still young and have never fought and killed in battle. Since you will not listen and insist on going, go as you wish, beautiful ones. But my heart trembles because there is an omen. Brothers, guard yourselves. Do not stay away long. If you meet enemies or dangers, may they be defeated by your power."

Then the two noble princes received the blessing, took their victorious arrows, and went to their grandfather's dwelling.

Each bowed his head at the pair of holy feet, left and right. "We two grandsons ask leave to wander and play in the forest for delight."

Then the wise rishi heard the two princes and said, "Beloved grandsons, go well. If enemies come to strike and fight you, may they be defeated by your magic arrows, and may no one in the three worlds oppose you."

Then the two battle-brave princes bowed their heads, received the blessing, and departed from the leaf-hall.

They walked among the mountains, winding along and watching the creatures in the forest: wild cattle coming in herds, tigers crouching and watching deer, deer stepping along and grazing, lions roaring, mountain goats leaping on the cliffs, gibbons wailing for one another, rhinoceroses moving sideways to eat thorns, great cats running in pairs, elephants rumbling and calling their mates, barking deer walking in groups, rabbits bounding and running, troops of monkeys climbing along the mountain, kirin playing in the water, lions leaving bright caves, elephant-lions moving in delight, and wild bulls tossing horns. The more they looked, the happier their hearts became, and they played in the forest.

Phra Mongkut glanced and saw the horse, adorned with bright ornaments, black-faced and cotton-white in body, with four red hooves and red mouth. It stepped like a hemara beast, wondrously beautiful. He told Phra Lop his younger brother, "What could this creature be called? In all our play we have never met or seen one. It must be a house-beast that people keep, since it is fitted with shining gear like this. Come, let us chase and block it. If we catch it, we can take turns riding it and play in the forest. That will be happier than any other day."

Having said this, they pulled down a mountain vine, held both ends firmly, stretched it before the horse, and together turned and chased it in uproar.

When they caught the horse, both were delighted and laughed. They looked it over carefully, pleasing their eyes with the beauty of its whole body: soft mane, long tail, tight hooves, proud stance, and shining head-piece; golden ornaments set with nine bright jewels; forehead plate, tail-strap, bridle, jeweled saddle, tassels hanging from both ears, and a jeweled box hanging from its neck. Wondering what could be inside, they opened it and saw a written letter on a decorated golden sheet. The elder brother read it at once.

"Royal letter of the Garuda-borne lord, crown of the three worlds and subduer of the age: he who dwells in the ocean of milk, with gods and rishis assembled before Phra Isuan on heavenly Kailasa, was invited to clear away unrighteousness where it had become a thorn to the earth. He made the whole world smooth, ruled glorious Ayutthaya, and bears the name Phra Ram Chakri, whose power surpasses the three worlds. Hearing the thunderous sound that shook all the worlds, he wondered in his royal heart and released his riding horse. If anyone is no rebel and has no crooked thought against Lord Narai, let that person worship the noble steed with incense, candles, and flowers. If anyone catches it and rides with it, that person's life shall be destroyed; the lord will end the enemy host and nourish the earth."

When he had read the whole letter, the radiant elder brother said to Phra Lop, companion of his life, "This creature is called a fine horse. The letter says that whoever rides it will be killed and not spared as a traitor. I do not understand this talk of rebellion at all. We caught it and will ride it for play and delight. If the owner comes, we will give it to him. If he fights us, we will kill him." Saying this, he sprang onto the noble horse, beautiful like Phra Chakri. With his left hand he held the rein; with his right he swung the shining bow. His younger brother, companion of his life, walked after the horse.

Then brave Hanuman, the great soldier, followed the noble horse's trail and saw the two princes. One rode the horse and one followed, both handsome, proud, and brave, holding bows, looking like Maghavan descended from Vejayanta. "Of what royal city are these princes, playing in the forest? Why do they have no troops? It is strange in my spirit. Perhaps these two princes are the ones who displayed power, and so they are proud and bold enough to ride without fearing anyone. If I kill them, how could they resist my power? No. I will seize them and take them to the avatar's feet." Thinking this, he crept close, hidden by a great tree, then sprang in power and rushed to seize both princes at once.

Then Phra Mongkut of the solar line saw the monkey coming to attack and grew angry like the fire at the end of the age. His hand brandished the magic bow, whose power could subdue the heavens. He struck the monkey's body, and by that power Hanuman fell writhing to the ground.

Then he said, "Listen, beloved brother. This monkey is very ugly. He came meddling uselessly. The base creature is dead, and it serves him right. But his body is strange: he wears bright ornaments, unlike forest monkeys in the deep woods. He was bold and did not fear death. Perhaps his master sent him to follow the horse through the great forest. Even so, we fear no one." Having said this, he drove the horse onward at once.

Then victorious Hanuman, when the wind touched his body, revived and regained his senses. He knew that these brothers had tested the bow and made earth and sky roar in every direction. "Their power surpasses the world. They struck me nearly to death. They are tiny, small as little children, yet their arrows are mighty, fiercer than Intharachit's when he destroyed Erawan and struck me. Let me use a trick. I will become a wild forest monkey, befriend and cling to them, let the princes grow careless and delighted, then slowly overpower them and seize them." Thinking this, he recited a mighty spell, gathered his mind, and transformed his body.

He became a small gray monkey, broke off tree-fruit, cut across the path, and blocked the noble horse in front.

When he arrived, he crept in gently and spoke with sweet words: "I love both princes, so I have gathered fruit to give you."

Then radiant Phra Mongkut thought he was a forest monkey, smiled, and said: "Keep the fruit you bring and eat it yourself, forest monkey. Just now an arrogant white monkey came and behaved badly toward me. I struck him with my bow; it hit his body and he fell rolling there. As for you, you are pitiful. You know how to entrust yourself like a forest creature."

Then Phraya Anuchit, the great soldier, heard the victorious prince and spoke with false blame: "That white monkey was wicked. He was a house monkey, not of the forest sort, and so he was bold and arrogant. Killing him would be just what he deserved." As he spoke, he walked close, acting intimate, teasing and laughing. Seeing that the prince did not understand, he gritted his teeth and fixed his mind. He wanted to leap and seize him, but hesitated and could not do it. Then he sprang swiftly and reached to grab the prince.

Then brave and mighty Phra Mongkut struck him with the victorious bow. Hanuman was hit and fell at once.

The transformed shape changed back into the radiant son of the Wind. Phra Lop grew angry like fire and struck him many times with his bow. Phra Mongkut smiled and said, "Do you see, younger brother? This monkey was arrogant just now, not fearing our power, and came to seize us. We struck him down, but he did not learn; he came with another trick. Why keep this light-headed creature alive? Elder brother should kill him to satisfy the heart."

Then noble Phra Lop heard and answered, "If we kill him, who will know? This monkey knows how to wear cloth; surely he has an owner. Bind him and release him, so his master can see. Then they will be shamed together."

Then Phra Mongkut of the solar line heard his younger brother and found it pleasing. He descended from the horse, pulled down a vine, and the two of them bound Hanuman in anger, tying both hands behind his back. Then they broke off tree resin and wrote letters on his face, making this vow over the bound monkey: "Even if anyone has power like poisonous fire from the lowest underworld up to the Akaniṣṭha heaven, through all ten directions, whatever spell or science they know, unless the one who raised you comes to untie you, let cutting and striking not sever this. Only your own master who keeps you may untie it as desired."

When they saw him revive, they struck him again. "Black-hearted slave monkey, hurry and tell your people to come. We will wait here to fight."

Then the strong and mighty son of the Wind was tightly bound with the princes' vine. His shame and humiliation were beyond thought; his heart burned as if scorched by fire. He stood frozen for a long time as the two brothers struck him, then walked away.

He tugged with all his strength, but the vine would not break. The more he strained, the tighter it held. Nothing he did moved it. Pain and bruising filled his body as if his life would end. "When I broke the asura garden on the island of Lanka, city of demons, and fought Intharachit, he shot his magic arrow to kill me. I fell to the ground, and the demon army seized me and bound me tight with great iron chains. I shook once, and they broke. This time a mere little vine, hardly the size of a belt, has bound and shamed me securely." Thinking this in hurt and grief, he staggered back through the forest.

When he met the army and saw the lesser and greater soldiers gathered, he walked in shame with lowered face before the royal chariot.

Then the two bow-bearing younger brothers of Narai hurried the army along, following the tribute horse by the forest path, without resting the warriors. They saw glorious Hanuman returning bound in disgrace. Both were startled, descended from the victorious chariot, and asked brave Phraya Anuchit by royal command: "You are famed in power; the whole world shakes from you. You destroyed unrighteous asuras until their blood was like the ocean, and their corpses were like Mount Cakkrawan. What has happened this time? Who bound you and brought you like this, monkey?"

Then brave Hanuman, mighty in battle, lowered his face and said to the younger brothers of the four-armed lord, "May the kings show mercy. I cut through the forest after the tribute horse and saw two princes riding it. I rushed to attack and fight them. One struck with his bow; I was hit and fell unconscious. When I revived, I became a forest monkey. I meant to play, grow close, and then seize them, but as soon as I moved, he struck me with the bow. It was like lightning hitting, burning me as if I would be destroyed and life torn away. Then they tied me with vines, mocked me with harsh words, and sent me quickly to tell you. They will match power with the king."

Then Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut, the younger brothers, heard the wise monkey lord and grew angry like the fire of time. They came near and reached out to untie the noble monkey, but the binding did not loosen from his body. The kings took up the royal sword and together cut as hard as they could, but the vine would not break. Wondering, they looked and saw letters inscribed there. Having read them and understood the message written on his face, they said, "The words are bold, proud, and greatly rude. We are not your master, so we cannot untie it. There is no help for it, noble monkey. Go attend Phra Chakri in his great dwelling."

Then Phraya Anuchit, finest of soldiers, was ashamed and angry beyond measure, as if he wished to sink into the earth. "Alas, this time I will be shamed before everyone. If I fly, I am ashamed before the gods; if I walk on earth, I am ashamed before men. I have nowhere to hide my face, and every hair of my body hurts. But if I do not attend the powerful-armed lord, I will suffer far more." Thinking this, he took leave at the feet of the two younger brothers and cut through the forest to Ayutthaya.

When he arrived, he went straight in to attend Lord Narai, lowered his face to the royal feet, and did not look at the army's faces.

Then bow-bearing Phra Kritsanurak sat upon the excellent jeweled couch. The king glanced and saw Hanuman coming in with his hands tied behind him. The lord grew angry like burning fire and roared his command: "Hey, strong son of the Wind! Your power makes all ten directions shake. Even Sahatsadecha with his thousand mighty heads and two thousand weapon-bearing arms could not withstand your power. This time you went after the swift horse. Why, and by whom, were you seized and bound? And the cord is only a vine, yet it binds you fast without shame. Wasted is your rank, lower than a wild forest monkey." As he spoke, he studied the writing on the noble monkey's face and knew it had been made with power. The king grew even more furious. He stamped his foot and roared: "Who is bold and proud enough not to fear me, Phra Harirak? They will all lose their lives." He extended his hand and untied the bonds according to the vow; they slipped from Hanuman's hands by the power of the mighty avatar.

Then the honored son of the Wind raised his joined hands and bowed at the royal feet. Lowering his face and angry in heart, he sighed and reported everything from beginning to end. "These two brother-princes have glorious arrows surpassing all. But I am your servant and would never betray your lotus feet. My fault this time reaches death. May the king show mercy."

Then the lord who subdued the three worlds heard and grew angry as if the world had caught fire at the end of the age. "Look at these little wretches, proud in heart, daring to boast! Hey, brave Hanuman, hurry back. Tell my two younger brothers to fight, seize them, and bring them here. I will act to satisfy my heart, and the three worlds will not take them as an example."

Then the strong and mighty son of the Wind received the command of the Garuda-borne lord, bowed, and flew away at once.

When he arrived, he reported at the feet of the two radiant royal younger brothers: "The king Phra Chakri is furious like the fire of time. He commands you to hurry the army, chariots, horses, and warriors, fight, and seize those two princes."

Then Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut learned the royal command and ordered the entire army to advance. Front and rear divisions crowded so thickly that the ground seemed to shake. Hanuman led the army along the forest line.

Then Phra Mongkut of the solar line was riding the horse through the forest and looking at the splendid trees. He looked out and saw the white monkey leading a fourfold army of warriors. He told his victorious younger brother, "That base monkey we tied has returned, leading countless army troops. Those riding in the chariot amid the army must be great commanders. Come, let us meet them with our powerful magic arrows." Speaking, he dismounted from the horse and stood blocking the army's way. He swung the bow in his hand, proud as a lordly lion leaving its jeweled cave to spring upon deer. Then he spoke sweetly and asked, "Why have you two come raising an army like this? Tell me your purpose."

Then the two solar-line kings heard and looked. They saw the two lovely princes, both fair and bright-faced, resembling radiant Phra Harirak. "What solar royal family and what city could they be from? Why have they come to learn from an ascetic? Why do the brothers live in the forest with no troops? They are tiny, small, and charming, yet clever in the arrow art, bold in speech, and not afraid of our power." Thinking this, they commanded: "Hey, brave-hearted princes, tell us your names, lineage, and city. Where do you live? You rode Phra Chakrit's horse with arrogant heart, then bound mighty son of the Wind and sent him back in shame, not fearing the lotus feet. Now the king is angry and has graciously ordered us to raise warriors and seize you, wicked-hearted ones, to present to the lord of the world."

Then brave and mighty Phra Mongkut heard and answered, "Why ask my name and lineage? Your speech goes too far; you show no respect at all. Do not think yourself bold and proud, as if I fear your power. This horse had no keeper; it wandered in the forest, so we caught and rode it. As for the white monkey who came attacking, we struck him with a mighty arrow. Once was not enough for him to learn, so we made him deserve it. We spared his life and let him go. How are we at fault? You do not examine the matter but come rashly speaking coarse words. As for saying you will capture us, we are truly terrified beyond measure."

Then radiant Phra Phrot heard and answered, "Look at this foolish speech. Phra Ram, king of the ten royal virtues, is famed in power through every direction. Did you not see the letter on the horse's neck as proof? We showed mercy and spoke gently, but you answer with wicked, deluded words. You are little children, small as flies, and will lose your lives together."

Then wise and brave Phra Mongkut laughed and answered: "Do not boast of your power to frighten us. The royal letter's beginning and end do not match. You release a horse and then blame whoever it meets; is that truth? Even if Phra Ram Chakri is strong and mighty, and even if you say he is Phra Harirak with the discus, avatar come to clear unrighteousness, he may subdue base and deluded demons, and kings with no great power. But we two brothers will not become Phra Ram's servants. You see us as children and would seize us, speaking as if we had no power. I pity only the warriors, who will perish with our shining arrows. Let you two against us two fight, and we will see who is good."

Then Phra Phrot of the solar line heard the prince speak stubbornly and grew angry like the fire at the end of time. "Ha! Look at this small child, bold in coarse words, not fearing me, the victorious one. I will kill you now." Saying this, he raised his royal bow, beautiful as Lord Kosi, drew with his power, and released.

Darkness covered every direction. The sound thundered, the earth shook, and the arrow became a mighty diamond net enclosing the two princes.

Then brave-hearted Phra Mongkut saw the diamond net surrounding his body and immediately released his powerful arrow.

The ten thousand worlds roared, golden mansions shook in every realm, and the diamond net shattered into dust as if struck by the fire at the end of the age.

Then powerful Phra Phrot saw the prince shoot back and tear the diamond net apart. He drew the royal arrow-weapon whose power shook the earth, set it to the string, pulled swiftly, and released with all his might.

The thunderous sound rang out, and the arrow became nagas filling the sky. They spat poison and twisted in pursuit of the princes by the power of Phra Chakri's younger brother.

Then radiant Phra Mongkut saw the arrow become nagas and displayed mighty power. The two brothers laughed, not afraid in heart, and each seized an arrow and fired, shaking the world, sky, and earth.

Their arrows changed into mighty Garudas, seized all the serpents, tore and bit the nagas, and pecked and ate them into ash and dust.

Then radiant Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut saw the princes shoot in battle and saw the Garudas peck the nagas away. In anger they brandished their arrows, stamped their feet until all shook, descended from the shining jeweled chariot, and rushed into the fight.

The four mighty champions were all bold, strong, and brave. Elder matched elder and grappled; younger matched younger and fought.

Then the two radiant princes received, guarded, and battled, now fleeing, now pursuing each other back and forth.

Phra Mongkut drew the magic arrow with brave force, beautiful as Skanda, and fired it with a sound that shook heaven and earth.

The arrow struck both kings through their bodies; they fell as if life were ending. Then it became a noose and went on attacking, binding the brave soldiers in confusion.

The lesser and greater troops, caught and bound by the noose, were terrified and lost their senses. They fell, crawled, tangled together, struggled to flee, rolled across the forest, and cried out in uproar.

Then mighty son of the Wind saw the arrow strike both kings and bind the army. "Ha! These princes are powerful, bold, and brave in battle. I too am a mighty soldier of the four-armed avatar. Even if I die, I must preserve my honor and make it known everywhere." Thinking this, he raised his hands in homage, recited a spell, and transformed his body.

Displaying power, he became eight-armed and four-faced, the size of bright Brahma, and leapt at once into battle to seize the two princes.

Then the two brave princes saw the monkey display power and leap in to attack. Each entered the battle and struck down with the bow. Hanuman's body could not withstand their hands; he fell unconscious at once.

Then the two radiant younger brothers of Narai had been struck by the arrow but did not lose their lives, because Phra Chakri had given them armor. Both rose again. Phra Phrot, elder of the solar line, said to his younger brother, "We went to Lanka and Maliwan and destroyed demons until Akaniṣṭha and all ten directions trembled. When they had completed three rounds, they stroked their bodies and the pain vanished. No wounds remained. The younger brothers of Narai looked and saw mighty Phraya Anuchit, greatest of great soldiers, lying still as if life had ended, while the army was bound and senseless. The two kings made a vow: "By the power of the radiant avatar, who came from Vaikuntha to sustain the world, let the monkey lord live again, and let the vines fall from the hands of all the soldiers." Then the lords took up the mighty arrow and released it.

It became a passing wind, and Hanuman revived. The nooses binding the army came loose at once. Phra Phrot's arrow struck the prince's bow and hit radiant Phra Mongkut, who fell to the ground by the power of the avatar's younger brother.
