It follows Rama grieving beside his sons, summoning the astrologer, celebrating and calling the spirits of Mongkut and Lop, the princes longing for Sita, Rama sending them and palace women to persuade her, Sita refusing, Rama devising a hidden false-death and funeral-pyre plan, Hanuman building the false pyre and deceiving Sita, and Wachamruek Rishi urging Sita to hurry into Ayutthaya.

Rama Celebrates the Princes and Sends for Sita

Then Narai of the solar line, when the sun's radiance had ended, moonlight filled the sky and the stars drifted everywhere with shining rays. He led his two beloved mighty sons on foot into the sleeping chamber.

The lord of the earth lay down on the throne-bed in grief and sorrow, embracing his two sons, companions of his life, against the left and right sides of his body. Tears crowded his eyes. He thought with pain of the queen: "Alas, Sita, what is she like now? Is she asleep, or thinking of her sons? Is she grieving and weeping? Does her anger against me grow, or is her heart slowly easing? The more I think, the more thought ends. My whole body burns. O heart, there will be only pain; I will endure suffering forever. Perhaps in a former life I separated living beings from their mates and happiness, and that enmity has now caught me, making me part from the one I love. O heart, there is no happiness this time; sorrow and suffering strike like a discus." Lamenting, with tears on his face, he held his two beloved sons and fell asleep.

When the sun shone gold and covered the moon's light, when birds and jeweled roosters cried sweetly and the victory gong marked dawn, the king woke from his couch. He washed his face, beautiful as a painting, dressed himself in royal splendor, and led his two royal sons from the shining bed. Moving with graceful steps, he came out into the victorious throne hall.

With ministers, elders, monkey lords, and lesser and greater solar-line kings gathered, he gave command to summon the astrologers quickly.

Then the honored police officers bowed their heads, received the royal command, and hurried out at once.

When they reached the chief astrologer's house, they called loudly, saying that the lord who ruled the earth had summoned him to the throne hall.

Then the diligent astrologer was playing dice with his wife, gambling even down to eyelashes and feeling ashamed to lose them. Though the police called again and again, he kept fussing, striking and arguing over the play: "Old woman, two and four are in the inner house; this time I will win the eyelashes." While they argued in confusion, the police came in and hauled him out. Startled, he dropped the dice, grabbed a cloth, wrapped it around himself, and searched frantically for his manuals. He stepped on a board, fell into a trench, and tumbled backward. When he finally found the book, he called his servants in panic and ran in breathless.

When he arrived, he crawled in to attend the king, bowed his head, joined his hands, and listened to the royal command in the middle of the ministers and army, panting for breath.

Then wise and brave Phra Chakri looked at the astrologer and spoke: "Old diligent astrologer, find a radiant auspicious day free from danger and stain. I will celebrate and call back the spirits of my sons."

Then the honored chief astrologer received the command and opened his manuals, but first found only the place where quicksilver is killed. He turned the pages again and again in panic, face pale and heart afraid, sweat dripping over his body as he feared Phra Chakri's power. When he found the solar text, he set out the era and lunar day, subtracting, adding, multiplying, and dividing according to the scripture. He found the lunar auspicious minute, bowed his head, and reported to the king, crown of the world: "At dawn, when the sun's radiance rises, in the fifteenth circle, the second lunar mansion meets the proper verse. It is an immortal-fortune hour of good result. A blessing rite performed then will increase life and welfare."

Then Narai of the solar line heard the auspicious time offered by the astrologer and commanded Sumanthan the minister: "You are wise and skilled. Arrange the celebration and spirit-calling rite. Have all games, dances, and entertainments ready in time for the victorious auspicious hour."

Then Sumanthan the chief minister received the command of the lord of the three worlds, bowed, and went out at once.

When he reached the palace guardroom, he ordered the four watch-officers to notify every group of ministers according to the royal command.

Then all the palace officers received the notice, summoned servants and workers quickly, inspected everything, and began the work together.

Some decorated the jeweled Vejayanta pavilion, the throne-seat, and the shining white parasols. They hung a gold-starred canopy and jeweled chandeliers with bright tassels. Below, they spread fine carpets and set bright gold-vine curtains. Nine-tiered golden offering trays and jeweled mirrors shone. Before the royal court, theater halls and entertainments filled the grounds in noisy display: tightrope acts high and low, flower-fire towers, and all kinds of festival rigs. Along the streets, they lined ceremonial fences, planted five-colored parasols and bright flags, and set up food and water stations. The whole city, inside and out, was in uproar.

Then the jeweled discus-lord of the solar line, bearer of the bow, when dawn cleared and sunlight rose, woke from sleep. With the solar-line kings gathered, he had both sons enter the bathing place, where water from the five rivers had been brought.

Then the two splendid princes bowed their heads, gladly received the command, and went together to bathe.

The officers opened golden pipes, and water fell in misting rain. The nurses offered divine perfumes mixed with flower pollen. When the bath was finished, the princes put on gleaming trousers of woven gold-vine work, different-colored splendid cloths, shining side panels, and jeweled hems. Directional pendants, breast ornaments, necklaces, and jeweled belts flashed; gold armlets with rubies, melon-shaped gems, and jeweled designs adorned them. Rings in pointed settings with yellow diamonds shone like fireflies. Blood-jewel diadems, flowers, and ear ornaments gleamed. Golden garlands of the nine jewels hung on them. They were beautiful like the sun and moon moving down from heaven to earth.

Then mighty Phra Chakkrit, bearer of the bow, led his two sons, companions of his life, to the splendid landing platform.

He had both royal sons ride on great shining royal elephants, while the avatar himself rode a splendid royal conveyance. Ministers, elders, and troops escorted them in crowds on left and right. Victory drums, trumpets, and conches sounded in layers with a vast roar. Royal insignia, peacock parasols, and flags stood in many rows. The solar-line grandmothers and palace women followed too.

When they reached the splendid palace, he had the two beloved sons sit on a bright throne beneath the shining white parasol.

When the auspicious time arrived, the royal teacher opened the offering rite. He lit the golden candles and set flame to the jeweled mirror.

Round and round the candles passed, circling from left to right. The solar-line grandmothers and the ministers passed and received them in order. Gongs, drums, trumpets, and conches sounded. Sweet mahori and singing rang out. Senior palace women and inner attendants offered victory and blessings together: "May you bear power and majesty like your radiant father. May you be refuge for humans and gods, like jeweled parasols over the earth. May cruel enemies never resist you two. May your years last ten million years, and may there be no grief, sickness, or danger."

When seven rounds had been completed according to the manual, the candles were extinguished and smoke was waved over them. The priests read mighty mantras, offering victory and summoning the princes' spirits: "Come, spirit of the solar-line children, who wandered lost in the forest, delighting among trees, birds, deer, and kirin. Come, children, do not remain playing in caves, streams, rivers, and mountains. Come enjoy welfare and happiness in the city, like a heaven, among your solar-line family, with immeasurable power and wealth, jeweled palaces and golden palaces bright as Vejayanta. Children, you will be crowns of kings, continuing the imperial line in days to come. Grow in splendor, welfare, and increase, free from sickness and danger."

Then all the entertainments began at once in noisy display: khon, puppets, plays of men and women, dancers moving and shaping their hands, drums, crowd games, acrobats, sword and staff displays, wrestling, tightrope walking, hoop acts, dances, Mon dancers, phala, and chatri theater. All the shows began together, and the men and women of the whole city rejoiced and watched in delight.

Then Phra Harirak, the three royal mothers, and all the solar-line family, when the celebration for the princes was finished, were happy, delighted, and glad. Each went to a splendid golden palace.

Then the two battle-brave princes lived in Ayutthaya for many nights. One night their royal father slept on his couch, and the two brothers, greatly sad, thought constantly of their mother. "Alas, our mother must be burning in heart and longing for the beloved sons who left her breast. She must be in terrible sorrow and grief. We two have happiness, while Mother endures suffering and darkness. Her body must be thin with grief in the forest hut. Her kindness surpasses heaven and earth, yet we have not repaid her feet. How could we leave like this? Perhaps we have old enmity." The brothers lamented, stricken and sorrowful, embraced each other, and wept beside the righteous king's bed.

Then Phra Kritsanurak heard his sons grieving and lamenting for their mother. He could not hold back sorrow, and longing for the queen deepened. Pity multiplied. He rose from the bed, tears filling his eyes, grieving and sad. He sighed again and again and embraced the two princes with both arms. "Alas, jeweled sons. This is karma from a former time. Do not grieve and long. Beloved sons, go out together and plead with your mother. Tell her that your father has done nothing but long and weep. If your mother does not return to the victorious city, your father's life will end."

Then the two royal sons heard the royal command and their grief eased a little. They said, "Your mercy and kindness rise beyond heaven and earth. We ask to serve beneath the feet of the righteous lord until our lives end."

Then the radiant avatar heard his two sons and was glad, as if he had gained a heavenly city. He stroked and called back his beloved sons' spirits, kissed their faces with love, took the hands of the two princes, and led them out to the great throne hall.

He sat down on the jeweled throne and commanded: "Wise Sumanthan, muster the troops and harness a pair of noble horses, bold as lions. My sons will go visit their mother at the holy sage's hermitage."

Then honored Sumanthan received the command, took leave with homage, and went out from the throne hall.

He arranged a fourfold army in procession. Elephant officers rode elephants in the shield line, holding hooks firmly. Horse officers rode horses in flanking lines, swinging bright lances. Chariot officers mounted shining golden chariots, holding bows ready. Commanders set the brave soldiers in groups, selecting those skilled in war. They dressed splendidly, eager to display courage, beautiful like Indra's troops. They stood in rows along the road as far as the eye could see, all the way to the jeweled landing platform, waiting for the royal children to depart.

Then Phra Kritsanurak, bearer of the bow, when the army was ready, spoke to his beloved sons, jewels of his eyes: "When you go attend your mother, speak and plead so that her heart softens. If your mother still will not come, use your own wisdom and gentle skill. Tell her that since your father returned to the victorious city, he has suffered longing every day without pause. When he eats, he eats only tears, full of grief and sorrow. Therefore he sends palace women to live with her in the forest hut."

Then the two princes bowed their heads, received the royal command, joined hands, took leave, and went to bathe.

Golden sprinklers poured like rain; water misted with pollen. They wore fragrant perfume, three-layered trousers with curved ends, different-colored purple and leaf-green cloths, raised patterns woven with gold, side panels with entwined naga designs, jeweled hems, small royal upper garments, necklaces and three strands of ornaments, directional pendants, breast pieces, gold armlets shaped like dragons, city-valued rings shining on every finger, diamond diadems, crown-jewels, flowers, and bright ear ornaments. Golden garlands hung on them. Each held a bow in the right hand. They went with companies of palace women and walked to mount the noble horses.

O the noble horses: two horses beyond compare, wild and brave, one black lord and one white lord, leaping and springing like gusting wind. They had strength like lion kings, fierce and terrible in courage, well-formed legs, round necks, raised ears and tails, and beautiful motion. Their great and small steps were agile and bright. Saddles, forehead plates, starry decorations, hanging tassels, and royal reins adorned them. Royal insignia shone with golden light. Gongs and drums rang through the deep forest. The companion chariots of the women entered the forest edge, parting the curtains in delight. Some pointed out birds, deer, trees, and mountain slopes. The princes hurried the strong army along the forest road.

When they reached the hermitage grounds under the shade of the banyan branches, they halted the troops. The princes dismounted from the fierce horses, beautiful like sons of Indra descended from heaven, and moved gracefully forward. All the women followed.

They bowed their heads at the feet of their grandfather, the great teacher, and each offered incense, candles, and flowers with faithful hearts.

When this was done, they bowed, took leave of the great rishi's feet, and walked together toward their mother's hut.

Each bowed at the feet of the mother who gave them birth, rejoicing to see her, and said, "Since we left your feet, your sons have grieved and burned with longing. We have had no rest by night or watch; there has been no happiness. At night we wake and long, as if someone had plucked out our lives."

Then lovely Sita, dear as life, saw her beloved sons and the women come out. Her burning sorrow eased, and the chief queen was deeply glad. She embraced and kissed her sons with love and longing, then spoke sweetly: "Beloved sons, dearest to your mother, since you two left my breast, I have wept every day. Now, only seeing your faces, the grief of separation eases, as if you had died away from me and life had been returned."

Then the women of the inner palace, left and right, each embraced Sita's feet and wept in grief: "O royal mother, your kindness once sheltered our heads. We thought your life had ended on that night. Each of us grieved and longed, suffering from separation, and wherever we sat we told our sorrow without ceasing. Only when we saw your beautiful sons did we know your life had not ended, and we were glad that we could rely on your feet again. Alas, you once lived in incomparable wealth and welfare, crown of the inner women, with no hatred or stain. Now the royal mother has fallen into poverty and hardship, with all joy gone, changed in form, thin in body, touched by dust, sun, wind, and air, eating only harsh forest fruit, without fine food." Speaking so, they wept over the young woman as if life would end.

Then heavenly Sita heard the palace women grieving and lamenting. Tears filled the chief queen's eyes, and she sighed deeply. She said, "This is karma I have made. Therefore ruin came, and I was separated from happiness, enduring great suffering in the forest. Think of impermanence, lovely women. Such is birth in the world. Suffering and happiness come alike. Do not grieve so deeply. I entrust these two sons to you. They are still young in wisdom. Help watch over them and teach them carefully: royal business, right and wrong, light and heavy duties. If you pity these two young ones, it will be better than loving me, their mother."

Then Phra Mongkut of the solar line, bearer of the bow, and mighty younger Phra Lop bowed their joined hands and reported to their mother: "The three royal grandmothers love us deeply. The three royal uncles show mercy and kindness. But our royal father, who gave us birth, suffers and grieves every day without pause. The whole solar-line family grieves and weeps; ministers and people lament. Therefore the righteous lord sent us to invite Mother back into the city, so the mighty king may ease his suffering. Otherwise he will lose his life through grief and longing. The wrong that our royal father did before was a mistake. Mother, please forgive him forever and show mercy."

Then lovely Sita heard her beloved sons speak in lament about her husband, saying the sky-ruling lord grieved and wept. She pitied him in her heart, then closed herself in pain and anger. She said, "Beloved sons, my wisdom is exhausted. I cannot go. How could I look at the people's faces? Who would say anything good? Your father branded me a wicked person, and the whole city knows it. The shame and anger are immeasurable; how could they end in hundreds of years? Whatever grief your father suffers, I have no care or pity. I will endure hardship in the forest until life ends and will not seek to meet him. If he lays down his life and dies, then I will force my face through shame and go worship his body, only to see the flames. I will not fear slander for that." Speaking so, she hugged and kissed her beloved sons, gazed at both faces, sighed again and again, and grieved with tears in her eyes.

Then the two radiant princes heard their royal mother cutting off the plea. Filled with longing for their father, they suffered as if struck by arrows. Both embraced their mother's feet, joined their hands, and reported through grief: "Now our royal father has arranged companies of palace women to come out as your companions in the forest, to serve beneath your feet."

Then Sita, dear beyond all, called back the spirits of both sons and spoke gently: "Extinguish this grief. Do not weep, beloved ones. I understand what your father has pleaded. But I came to take refuge with my grandfather and had no one with me. I suffered alone in the forest until you were thirteen years old. My own karma is settled; I will endure hardship. It is not right to bring others into hardship. Go back and tell the king that your mother has ended longing."

Then the two battle-brave princes heard their royal mother and could plead no further. Each pressed down his face in grief, tears flowing in streams. "O heart, what can we do? We are helpless beyond measure. From now on there will be only suffering, no happiness or splendor. Why live and weigh down the earth? Better to die than be human. Alas, our birth has brought pain in every pore. We are anxious looking forward and back, because of the result of karma we have made. Father grieves and longs; Mother suffers and darkens." Speaking so, they sighed, embraced each other, sobbed, and wept.

Then lovely Sita saw her two beloved sons lamenting and grieving. Love and longing pierced her like a poisonous gun fixed in her breast. She embraced both beautiful sons, called back their spirits, and said, "Children, do not grieve and long, suffering in sorrow. When you think of me, come out together. Jewels of my eyes, listen to your mother's words."

Then the two radiant princes heard their mother's words and grew even more shaken in heart. Suffering, grief, sorrow, and separation made it nearly impossible to leave. Tears filled the lovely woman's eyes as the princes pressed their faces down and sobbed.

After a while they bowed low at both of her feet, and also took leave of the great siddha, their royal grandfather. They forced their hearts and moved out from the hermitage, walking while looking back at their mother, sorrowful along with the inner palace women.

The two mounted their horses, dismissed the great army, and traveled along the forest road, both thinking in grief.

When they reached the splendid palace, bright like Tavatimsa heaven, they dismounted from the fierce horses and went up to attend their father.

Both bowed their heads before their supreme royal father, in the middle of the lovely women in the shining great palace.

Then Narai of the solar line, radiant in glory, saw his beloved sons return and was glad. He asked: "You went to attend your mother. What did the lovely woman say? I have waited in longing and want to know the matter."

Then the two royal sons bowed at his feet and answered through grief: "Our royal father graciously sent us to attend our mother in Kalawat forest. We pleaded and told her that you suffer, burn, and weep almost to the end of life, and that you sent us to bow and invite our mother back into the royal city. She said: when the righteous king dies and life ends, she will come to see the funeral flame and bow to the body of the supreme lord of the world. We pleaded many times, even offering the palace women. She cut off the plea and had no longing; she did not accept even one woman." Speaking so, they sobbed and wept.

Then the radiant lord who overthrows the three worlds heard his two sons, companions of his life, report the matter in grief. His heart burned and shook as if poisonous fire scorched his skin. When evening came and sunlight sank, the sky-ruling lord entered his sleeping room.

He lay down on the divine couch, resting his arm across his forehead and weeping. His heart was deeply shaken, thinking always of the queen. "O jewel of my eyes. How could the chief queen cut me off? She has no care for me, not even as much as a dust mote, as if I were an enemy. Alas, we once suffered hardship together, shared danger, shared life and death, shared heat and sleep in the forest, shared happiness and suffering in former days. I led her through wandering and hardship, through such difficult wilderness, and we three walked together with my brother until the ten-faced yaksha stole her away. I followed and fought to win the dear woman back to my chamber. We were close in sleep, body to body, and I cherished her so that no trouble would touch her heart. Now the result of karma separates us and takes my jewel away from my breast. O heart, why live alone?" He sighed again and again, springing up, sitting down, bewildered and overcome with grief. He did not sleep until the sun rose over Mount Yugandhara.

Then he left the bright shining sleeping room and came out past the ministers and army to the three-faced palace window.

He sat on the jeweled throne beneath the shining white parasol and gave royal command to his three beloved younger brothers, to Sumanthan the minister, and to the wise son of the Wind: "The lovely chief queen has cut me off in anger. However much I plead and ask forgiveness, her anger does not ease. She says that only when I have gone to heaven will she come. Therefore we must devise a trick, saying that my life has ended. Build a splendid royal funeral pyre and a jeweled urn. Do not let the people learn the hidden stratagem. We will deceive the chief queen and draw her into the city."

Then the three radiant younger brothers, Hanuman, and Sumanthan the minister received the royal command and went out.

When they reached the front of the royal court, wise Hanuman raised his hands to the lord of the three worlds, collected his mind, and recited spells.

In a moment a golden royal cremation tower appeared, bright and high into the sky. Its four faces were all jeweled and artful, catching sunlight in the clouds. It had figures of gods, kinnara, vidyadharas, celestial attendants, and yakshas. The jeweled urn-throne, parasols, and flags were arranged in glittering rows. It was beautiful like a divine king's palace dropped down from heaven. Sumanthan's ministers also mustered guards in busy confusion.

Then lesser and greater officers who did not know the plan were startled and afraid, sitting together and sharing grief. Those who knew remained silent and worked. The men, women, subjects, and people who did not know the trick grieved.

Then the three younger solar-line brothers, Hanuman, and Sumanthan the minister, when all was finished, went in together.

When they reached the bow-bearing lord, they raised joined hands, bowed, and reported that the splendid royal cremation tower had been prepared according to the royal command.

Then wise and brave Phra Chakri heard his three victorious younger brothers, and the sky-ruling lord was glad, as if he had brought the chief queen into the city palace. He commanded trusted women: "Arrange senior palace women and groups of women to weep. This plan we have made is meant to deceive Sita. If she comes into the city, grieve so that she has no doubt. As for the two royal princes, take them away to play far from the affair."

Then the wise mouth-servant bowed her head, received the avatar's command, and went according to the king's words.

Then the serpent-line lord, radiant and blessed, gave command to powerful Hanuman: "Hurry out to the forest and deceive heavenly Sita by your tricks and devices, so the lovely woman has no doubt." When he had finished the command, he moved gracefully from the great throne hall alone and went to the jeweled royal funeral tower.

Then the honored son of the Wind, when mighty Phra Hariwong had gone to the glittering royal cremation tower, displayed his brave power. The earth shook and roared. He flew through the sky like doomsday wind toward Kalawat forest.

When he reached the hermitage hall, he made tears pour and cried, bowed at the lovely woman's feet, and sobbed as if he would lose consciousness.

Then lovely Sita saw the son of the Wind come grieving as if his life would end. She was startled and sat frozen, thinking, her heart burning as if struck by lightning. Deep confusion filled her spirit, and she asked, "Brave Hanuman, what evil event has happened? Why have you come weeping? I am deeply puzzled."

Then the victorious son of the Wind made himself still more sorrowful and reported to the queen through deceit: "The Garuda-mounted lord, crown of the world, from the day he returned to the city, suffered terrible grief in separation. He thought of the royal mother, longing and burning like a heavy fever. His face became dark with sorrow. He abandoned royal duties and would not bathe or eat. He only wept and lamented. At last, in helplessness, he sent the two royal sons to the hermitage to plead at your lotus feet and invite the glorious queen to return to the city. The royal mother cut him off and showed no care for her husband. His grief grew until the sky-ruling lord went to heaven. Now all the kings crowd the capital beyond counting, and the whole solar-line family is gathered to offer royal fire to the king. The three royal mothers are waiting by his feet and have sent me to invite you to go see Phra Chakri's funeral flame."

Then Sita, dear beyond all, did not understand the trick and deceit. She grieved and lamented: "O Garuda-mounted lord, supreme in fierce power beyond heaven, refuge of humans and gods like a jeweled parasol over the world. I lived cool beneath your glory and shelter, yet I had not repaid even a dust mote of kindness before the king went to heaven. Alas, my beloved sons are pitiful. They will have no refuge, orphaned from their royal father from childhood onward. Now they will be lonely in heart and empty to the eyes. O heart, because of bitter karma I left his lotus feet to live in the forest, and I did not see Phra Chakri's heart." Speaking so, the lovely woman grieved.

Then she calmed and steadied herself and led the radiant son of Phra Phai out from her dwelling, going straight to the teacher's hut.

When she arrived, she bowed at the feet of the wise and brave one and reported everything Hanuman had come to tell. She said, "Your beloved granddaughter will take leave and go into the royal domain to offer fire to the Garuda-mounted lord, who was kind to me in former days."

Then Wachamruek, strong in meditation, heard Sita's words. Without considering deeply, he was startled and sat stunned for a while, not knowing it was a trick. Then he answered, "Alas, how could it come to this? I told you to be reconciled, but you stubbornly cut him off more than was fitting, until your royal husband lost his life. From now on, gods and siddhas will burn in every place. Cruel enemies and base beings will arise and oppress the three worlds. I pity only the two princes; it is as if their mother deliberately made karma for them. Well, if it is like this, whom can we blame? Hurry into the city."

เป็นที่พึ่งมนุษย์เทวัญ / ดั่งฉัตรแก้วกั้นธาตรี
ตัวข้าบริจาเย็นเกศ / เพราะพระเดชปกเกล้าเกศี
ยังมิได้สนองคุณเท่าธุลี / ภูมีมาสวรรคาลัย
อนิจจาสงสารพระลูกรัก / จะมีที่พำนักก็หาไม่

จนองค์พระราชสามี / ถึงสิ้นชีวีวายปราณ
แต่นี้สุรารักษ์นักสิทธ์ / จะร้อนจิตไปทั่วทุกสถาน
