This is the one-hundred-eleventh สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Sita entering Rama's false funeral scene, Rama revealing himself and trying to stop her, Sita calling on the earth and descending into the naga realm, Thao Wirun Naga receiving and honoring her, Hanuman finding Sita and reporting her safety, Rama summoning Phiphek from Lanka, Phiphek reading Rama's dangerous horoscope and naming Adun as the deceiver, Rama arranging the kingdom under Bharata, Shatrughna, Mongkut, and Lop, and Rama leaving Ayutthaya with Lakshmana and Hanuman for a twelve-month forest wandering.

Sita Descends to the Naga Realm and Rama Enters the Forest

Then young Sita, beloved beyond all, with tears streaming over her face and her breast burning like fire, bowed at the feet of the great rishi, took leave of him, and went out from the forest hut. Hanuman, lord of monkeys, followed her.

Then mighty Hanuman, the great soldier, bowed his head and said to the lovely queen who was going on foot: "The road is far and hard to walk. Please step onto my palm. I will fly by power, and in a blink we will reach the city." Having spoken, he lifted his hands above his head, honored the radiant father who gave him birth, gathered his mind and senses, and recited his victorious spell.

By the force of the splendid mantra, his body grew vast and high. He stood like Himavanta mountain, with two hands like the broad earth. Then he lifted the beautiful queen, as once Thotsakan the yaksha had lifted the honored Lady Uma and carried her through the air to offer her to Shiva.

When he reached royal Ayutthaya, the monkey lowered Lakshmi's form to the earth beside the shining funeral pyre.

Then lovely Sita, a woman of heaven, heavy with grief and lamentation, went into the adorned funeral structure.

Then the royal relatives on left and right, all the heavenly women, palace officers, eunuchs, ladies of rank, and elder attendants saw the chief queen arrive at the radiant pyre. The goddess walked in sorrow. Looking at her body, thin and wasted, her face darkened with grief, they pitied and loved the lovely woman, and the sound of weeping and lament spread into turmoil.

Then Sita, beloved beyond all, saw the women of the solar line grieving and thought they wept for Phra Narai. Her own anguish and longing increased until it was as if her head had been cut from her body. The beautiful woman hurried in.

When she reached the jeweled urn, she bowed and wept: "Alas, lord of the three worlds, you once sheltered your wife and never let anything trouble her. Then you left the city and lived in the forest. You endured poverty and misery; there was not even cloth to spread for sleeping. You ate tree-fruits as food and suffered like an ascetic. When that demon Thotsakan stole this wife away, you followed across the sea to fight. Countless yakshas died, and you brought me back to the victorious city to live happily in heaven. Because that karmic woman followed to harm me and made me draw Thotsakan's form, I was parted from your feet. You followed and pleaded kindly, but all this happened because I did not return to serve beside you. Your grief multiplied until you reached heaven's city. O, born into this world I have known no happiness, only suffering and burning pain. To live is only to suffer more. I will die and follow the lord of the earth to the city of heaven." Lamenting, she rolled and collapsed among the solar-line people on left and right, struck her breast, and nearly lost consciousness.

Then Phra Harirak, radiant and secure, hidden behind the golden curtain, saw his queen come and lament. She recited all the old hardships with pure love, then fell face-down and lay still. Startled, he hurried out.

He lowered himself near the chief queen, tears flooding both eyes. He lifted her hair with joined hands and placed her at once upon his lap. Gazing closely at the face of his royal queen, he thought she had died, and the king was overcome. With immeasurable love and loss, the mighty lord wept, not guarding himself before the young woman.

Then Sita, most piteous queen, came back to herself and saw the avatar. Her anger and hurt multiplied. She shook off the arms of Phra Chakri, rose, and fled. "How can you do this, lord of the earth? Do you think it good? Do you feel no shame before the armies, ministers great and small, siddhas, wise beings, gods, and all the three worlds, who will mock you?"

Then Phra Harirak, lord and refuge, felt his heart burn like lightning-fire, and hurried after the queen.

He spoke beautifully: "Listen, beloved younger woman, heart of your elder. This is the custom of the world through all the three realms. You came to incarnate together with me; who would dare speak slander? This has happened because you cut me off. I am at the end of my power, lovely one."

Speaking, he hurried after the beloved woman, chasing her around the splendid funeral structure, beautiful as Indra pursuing Suchada.

Then Sita, beloved beyond all, fled. Seeing a little distance from Phra Chakri, she answered him: "Ah, four-armed lord, how cleverly you twist and repair things. On the day you ordered my life destroyed, I had no time even to speak. By the power of truth and purity my life did not end. From that day, I and the Garuda-riding lord were cut apart." Speaking, she moved aside and fled, beautiful as Mani Mekhala teasing the asura Ramasun, turning and slipping through the sky.

Then Narai of the solar line, bearer of the bow, heard the chief queen. The king pondered and thought: "If I soothe her, she will not listen to the royal word. She has cut me off as if I were an enemy. No strength remains to speak kindly." Thinking this, he called his three younger brothers and the son of the Wind: "Help block her now. Do not let the queen escape."

So, when he had spoken, the jeweled discus-lord curved around and chased: "O heart of my heart, lovely woman, why do you flee?"

"My own beloved, jewel of my eyes, stop a moment. Do not go yet. If you have no pity, I will die." Speaking, he circled and reached for the young woman.

"Mighty lord, even if my life must end, I will not listen to the sky-ruling command hereafter. Shame is beyond bearing. I cannot stay." Speaking, she moved away, keeping far from the king.

"Heart of my heart, lovely one, hear my words first. My love for the queen is my very life." Speaking, the lord of earth chased the heavenly woman, pressing close and circling after her.

Then the three royal younger brothers and Phraya Anuchit, mighty in power, saw Sita fleeing Phra Chakri. They helped block and spread out before the lovely woman, some cutting across her way so that she could not pass beyond the righteous lord.

Then Sita, woman of heaven, saw the three beautiful younger brothers and mighty Hanuman blocking and barring her. Her anger grew fierce, and she saw no way to escape the sky-ruling lord. Her breast burned like the fire at the end of an age. She raised her hands above her head and made a vow: "By the force of truth held firm in my heart, may the just earth open a passage for me to the city of the nagas, away from Narai." As soon as the beautiful woman finished, the ground opened a passage at once.

Then Phra Harirak, radiant and secure, turned and cut off the queen inside the shining funeral ground. When the mighty lord came close to the chief woman, he caught the end of her hand. She pulled away with quick strength and slipped down through the earth.

He was more stricken in spirit, as if poison-fire had burned his skin and flesh. He was stunned through all his senses and could no longer think.

Then lovely Sita, when she reached the naga world, entered the royal city.

Then Thao Wirun, naga lord and brave fighter, was at the beautiful window with his ministers and armies. Seeing a young human woman, beautiful as if painted, he wondered and came down with his naga women.

When he arrived, he spoke gently: "Lovely woman, excellent in beauty, your form surpasses all women. What is your name? Are you born from a royal solar line? What city do you rule? What business and desire bring you into the underworld city?"

Then the chief queen, beloved woman, heard him and answered sweetly: "My name is Sita. I am Lakshmi, queen of lord Narai, who incarnated to destroy asuras under the victorious name Phra Rama." She told the whole story from beginning to end, leaving nothing aside. "I have no refuge and no way left; therefore I have come down to dwell in the underworld."

Then wise and brave Thao Wirun understood that she was the queen of the avatar and chief lady of the earth. Startled and afraid of her majesty, he bowed his head at her feet and said: "Mother, your truth is greater than that of all women in the three worlds. You should be mother of the gods in power, nourishing the whole world in every direction. Let me serve your feet and keep you in happiness." Having said this, he invited the chief queen to a palace of pearl, and Phraya Wirun with his retinue followed the lovely woman.

When they arrived, he commanded Rattana, beloved woman: "Prepare the splendid jeweled chamber and all the attendants, with wealth and splendor, all divine and vast, to honor the beautiful chief queen with the full dignity of a goddess."

Then lovely Rattana received the command of Phraya Wasukri, offered homage, and went out.

When the arrangements were finished, she brought them to offer to the queen of lord Narai, according to the command of mighty Phraya Wirun.

Then young Sita, beloved beyond all, lived in the underworld realm, in the shining divine palace. She was happy and at ease among beautiful naga women who attended her, fanned her, and served her without the least stain. She bathed and ate countless foods, as if they were the divine foods of heaven, yet she thought of her two sons of one heart, and her own heart burned with longing.

Then Phra Harirak, bearer of the discus, when beautiful Sita had escaped into the underworld, felt his heart burn like poison-fire. He commanded Phraya Anuchit, finest of soldiers: "Go down quickly after the lovely woman, and learn clearly where she is."

Then Phraya Anuchit, the great soldier, received the command of the lord of the three worlds and, by power, slipped through the earth.

When he reached the underworld realm, splendid like Tavatimsa heaven, he recited a powerful spell and hid his monkey body.

At once that shadow-body vanished. The son of the Wind, brave in war, entered the city and went searching everywhere for the lovely woman.

He searched throughout the naga city and did not find the beautiful queen. Puzzled and unsure, he went straight into the palace. Climbing the shining jeweled palace, he saw the queen of the conch-bearing lord seated on a divine throne, surrounded by naga women. He feared the lovely queen almost to the point of death, but steeled his heart, released the spell that hid him, and bowed from far away.

Then Sita, beloved beyond all, seated among the women, glanced and saw Hanuman. Anger tightened her breast and burned like poison-fire. She denounced him: "Hey, cruel-hearted beast. You deliberately made a grieving trick, saying Phra Chakri had died. I did not know that master, servant, and brothers had planned it together without shame. Seeing me as a lone woman, you all ran to chase and seize me in confusion. If the earth had not opened a way, I would not have escaped your hands. You have no truth, only every kind of lie. I did not examine it and, too simple, took it for truth. I can guess the measure of your thought. Will you deceive me again with some new thing? Why do you bow your face there, monkey? Do not be silent; speak quickly. As for your coming down here, I can hardly bear the sight of you. Away, evil and unlucky one. Get yourself gone this instant."

Then Phraya Anuchit, splendid monkey, heard her. He bowed his head with joined hands and answered the command sweetly: "I serve beneath the feet of the bow-bearing avatar. When he was angry with the queen, I too burned as if inside the fire of the age. All the royal houses learned the matter and were filled with grief. When we understood something of the righteous lord's intent, we rejoiced together and thought to repay his kindness, by which he has honored us, hoping to make the three worlds supremely happy hereafter. In offending your feet, I did not act from the heart of a traitor. Mother, forgive your loyal servant. Now the lord of the serpent-race longs for the beautiful queen. His sorrow and grief grow many times over, and he has sent me down to hear news of your feet. Since you are well, I will bow and take leave to report the matter to the lord of the earth." Having spoken, the monkey bowed with joined hands, left the palace of the lovely woman, and went to the naga lord.

When he arrived, he sat with radiant Thao Wirun, lord of nagas, and said gently: "Lord of the underworld, lovely Sita is Lakshmi, beloved queen of the avatar who rules the three worlds. She has now come down to dwell under your protection. Please nourish and guard her, and let no danger or stain touch her."

Then radiant Thao Wirun Naga heard the powerful son of the Wind and answered gladly: "Mighty son of the Wind, brave and mature, return and tell the avatar clearly that I bow beneath the lotus feet of the world-bearing lord. The chief royal wife has come to the naga realm. I honor the lady as the mother who gave me birth, serving her with devotion and letting not even dust trouble her."

Then mighty Hanuman, the great soldier, heard the naga lord's message and was delighted. He said: "Mighty lord, remain firm and prosper in welfare. I will take leave and report to the jeweled feet of the mighty jeweled discus-lord." Having spoken, he descended from the divine jeweled palace and, by power, slipped through the earth up to the royal city.

When he arrived, he crawled in to attend, bowed his head at the honored feet, and reported to Phra Chakri that the beautiful queen had gone down to the underworld, splendid as Tavatimsa heaven. Thao Wirun Naga bowed before the woman's feet, housed her in a divine jeweled palace with blessed women on left and right, and sent all his message exactly as given.

Then brave Phra Chakri heard the words of mighty Hanuman. The sky-ruling lord was deeply saddened and did not know what to do. Grief and longing were like a broken heart. Burning with love, he nearly lost consciousness.

When the sun set and sank beyond the beautiful mountain's edge, he moved with slow steps into the shining jeweled chamber.

He leaned on the couch, raised his hand across his sorrowful face, and tears crowded the eyes of the righteous lord. He lamented for the lovely queen: "O my Sita, beloved woman beyond all, do you not remember the hardships we endured together? Is it right, jewel of my eyes, that you cut me off? Before, though I was separated from you, I did not suffer as much as this time. O heart, what can I do to bring back the chief queen, to share the seat, the chamber, and delight with me? Every moment will be only longing and grief multiplied without end. From now on I will see only darkness, like the moon extinguished. Even if I live, there will be no ease. Death would be better than living as a man. Did I subdue the age to make the world happy only to suffer in every pore? To be parted from my wife is like losing life itself." Lamenting, the mighty lord grieved.

He kept rising and sitting, unable to sleep, turning and rolling in confusion on the couch until golden light shone over the earth. The king thought: "What has happened to me now? My heart is strangely wrong. I must find Phiphek the asura, so he may examine my age and give prophecy." Thinking this, he came down from the jeweled couch, took his bow in hand, and walked out to the palace forecourt.

He tied a letter to an arrow and commanded it to go to the royal seat of Lanka. Drawing with victorious strength, the sky-ruling lord released it.

The sound was like a thunderbolt. The world shook and trembled. It flew straight to great Lanka and fell in the jeweled pavilion.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha was seated among ministers. Seeing the mighty lord's powerful arrow float into the pavilion, he bowed with a true heart. Looking closely, he saw the letter tied to the victorious arrow, wondered what the cause might be, loosened the arrow, held it above his head, and opened it to read.

In the royal command, the radiant avatar was greatly troubled in heart, as if a mountain pressed upon his breast. He therefore wrote a gracious royal letter and sent the powerful arrow to summon wise Thao Thotsakhiriwong to Ayutthaya.

When the demon lord finished reading the royal letter, he was glad. He ordered his granddaughter: "Beloved child, remain and guard the city. Let no disturbance arise. I will go to attend the lord of the earth in victorious Ayutthaya." Having ordered this, he bathed and dressed in splendor, shining like a divine figure, and took his armies through the sky by power.

When he reached royal Ayutthaya, vast and firm like Dusita, he ascended the brilliant throne hall and attended Phra Chakkrit.

He bowed his head and raised his hands at the feet of radiant Narai, then offered homage with joined hands to the three royal younger brothers.

Then the lord who rules the three worlds, seated among his armies, glanced aside and saw Phraya Phiphek, wise in nature. The lord of the sky rejoiced and gave a royal command: "Thao Thotsakhiriwong, great line of Brahma, my spirit is unwell; therefore I have summoned you now. As for the city of Lanka, the solar-line yaksha clans and all the people, are they well?"

Then Phiphek, wise in nature, heard the lord's command and answered with homage: "The royal line, kin, and people remain in lasting happiness because your majesty shelters the asuras like a shining jeweled parasol." While reporting, he looked around and saw the two beautiful princes. Their whole bodies and faces shone alike, like sons of Indra fallen from heaven. Amazed, he bowed and asked: "Are these two princes shoots of the solar line? They are beautiful like gods in heaven. Your servant is greatly puzzled."

Then radiant Phra Kritsanurak told the asura: "These two princes are sons of Sita. The elder is named Phra Mongkut, fierce and mighty with the powerful arrow. This is his younger brother Lop, of equal power. Lovely Sita drew the image of deluded Thotsakan, and I was angry and ordered her killed, but the woman did not die." The lord explained everything from beginning to end, leaving nothing out. "Every day my heart burns with longing, as if I lay in fire. Examine my age. Look according to birth, sign, and scripture; drive the calculation through and tell me what good or evil will come."

Then wise and brave Phiphek received the avatar's command and took up the board at once. He set the age of Phra Harirak, placed the proper moving fate, divided the life by nine and counted the remainder into the prophetic field. Seeing clearly, he bowed and reported to the solar-line bow-bearing king: "In your age, Rahu has come to cross the ascendant. The killing point, Indra's blow, the moon's foot, and the eight planets all strike heavily. If you remain in the city, danger will be great, almost enough to end your life. It is necessary by the rule that you must leave the city and walk the forest, subduing hostile asuras. In twelve months the evil in your age will end. The trouble that offended your feet arose because a demoness deceived the beautiful queen. Her name is Adun, of Thotsakan's asura line. As for your chief wife, she will return to serve at your feet; because of you, lord, happiness will be lasting."

Then Narai of the solar line, bearer of the bow, heard the astrologer's prophecy and felt his spirit somewhat eased. He gave royal command: "What you say is very fitting. I will do as you say, asura; I will go walk the forest. As for you, return to victorious Lanka, nourish the people by the ancient custom." Having spoken, he removed his golden chain, bright with pearls, and gave it to the demon astrologer.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha bowed his head at the king's feet and gladly received the great chain. He offered homage to radiant Phra Narai, to the three powerful younger brothers, and to the two sons of the lord of the three worlds. Then he left the throne hall, took his troops great and small, and flew swiftly through the sky toward the demon island.

Then wise Phra Chakri, after Phraya Phiphek the astrologer had returned to Lanka, worried and pondered the yaksha's prediction. "The asura's fatal-word is as true as a god's divine eye. I am not at ease in the city, because the planets press me harshly. I must go walk the forest and lessen the fault and stain." Thinking this, he spoke sweetly to Phra Phrot, radiant Phra Satrut, and his two beloved sons: "All four of you must remain in the royal city. I, Lakshmana my younger brother, and mighty Phraya Anuchit will go walk the forest according to the prophecy. When twelve months are complete, I will return. Jewels of my eyes, do not grieve. Help maintain the great city, so the people may be happy and glad."

Then the four radiant solar-line kings bowed and answered: "May your majesty show mercy. We had wished to go serve at the feet of the lord of the earth. Since you now order us to remain in the city, we cannot oppose the command. We will repay the mighty lord's kindness until our lives and bodies end, and will allow no harmful trouble to arise before the sky-ruling lord returns to the city."

Then the jeweled discus-lord, bow in hand, heard this and was glad. He received the spirits of his beloved sons, embraced one on each side, kissed them, and placed them on his lap. "I must part from you two, lovely ones. Stay well, eyes of your father. Do not concern yourselves only with play. Morning and evening, attend at the honored feet of the three royal grandmothers. Give attention to royal business and the work of the city. Use your two uncles as your arms, your heart, and your eyes." Having said this, he invited the three younger brothers, his two beloved royal sons, and mighty Phraya Anuchit to go attend his mother.

When they arrived, he bowed at the feet of the three mothers and said: "This son of yours has had no happiness by night or day. I summoned Phiphek to make a prediction. He said fierce evil fate presses me: the killing point, Indra's blow, and the moon's foot are upon me. Therefore I was parted from Sita. If I remain in the city, harm will arise. It is necessary for me to go walk the forest. When twelve months are complete, I will return and be free of this fault and stain. I and Lakshmana my younger brother, with the brave son of the Wind, ask leave of our mothers to travel in the forest. May you remain secure and not suffer in grief. Tomorrow, when the sun rises, I will bow and depart."

Then the beloved royal mothers heard him and all three women burned in heart, stunned as if someone had cut off their heads with a sharp jeweled sword. Tears trembled in their eyes, and they said: "Listen, Rama. You are the crown of your mother's city, sustaining all three realms. You have old astrologers and brahmins. Why would you follow the words of an asura? If bad fate comes, must you walk the forest and make your body suffer? Father, do not leave the city. Follow the astrologers' rites instead. Assemble holy ascetics, strong in observance, to remove the evil by knowledge, and the fault will end."

Then the jeweled discus-lord of the solar line, bow in hand, heard the three mothers. He raised joined hands and answered: "In your son's age the evil is severe. I cannot remain in the city. I must be parted from the victorious city and go walk the forest. Phiphek's prediction does not miss the words of the yaksha; he is like a clear mirror shining over the world, and none can compare with the asura. In another way, in the eastern quarter I believe there are unrighteous yakshas, thorns piercing the world, a low and cruel race. I will go subdue them and make the whole broad earth smooth, according to the command of the omniscient lord who sent me to incarnate this time."

Then the three royal mothers heard and felt as if consciousness would end. They embraced him and wept: "O jeweled discus-lord of your mother, what karma has driven this upon you? Before, you had to walk the wilds and endured hardship beyond measure, until Sita fell into the demon city. You followed and destroyed the yakshas, and the two of you nearly died before returning to the city. Even that was not enough. Alas, now you are again parted from your queen. Your mother grieves many times over and has no happiness at any time. Only seeing our young grandsons eased grief a little. Now you two, lives of our hearts, will again go into the wilds. How can your mothers have happiness? We will suffer, grieve, and weep." Speaking in sorrow, the women nearly lost life.

When their longing eased a little, they each gave a blessing: "Father, go in happiness and welfare. When the year is complete, return quickly. Lakshmana and glorious Hanuman are both wise, brave, and mighty. All three of you, guard your bodies in the forest paths. Let enemies and hostile ones be unable to stand against your power. May your force subdue all three worlds, as your mothers bless you now."

Then the two radiant solar-line kings and mighty Phraya Anuchit received the blessing with joined hands and joy. They bowed their heads at the feet of the three chief royal ladies, then went together to the splendid palace.

When they arrived, the two solar-line lords, wise and brave, removed their splendid ornaments and went in to bathe.

Jeweled lotuses scattered like rain. They rubbed on fragrant perfumes. Their trousers were patterned with Garuda-creepers seeming to flutter. The elder brother wore a cloth of green-leaf ground with gold designs of royal lions; the younger wore graceful purple cloth floating with golden dragon patterns. Each wore side-panels and shining hems, ornaments bright with red gems, breast ornaments of pearl, three strands of jeweled chains, gold armlets shaped with dragon forms, and rings with diamonds flashing before the eyes. They set on great crowns of the nine jewels, with flowers and crystal ornaments at left and right. Each took the powerful bow and girded on the jeweled sword. They were beautiful like the two great Brahmas descending from heaven. Calling the mighty son of the Wind, they went out from the victorious city.

They crossed open fields toward the high forest, cut through woods, passes, and mountain slopes, and after half a month had gone a thousand yojanas on the far road.

At the border they reached a river, very broad and deep, its far bank vanishing from sight. It was called the Great Ocean River.

Then Phraya Anuchit, radiant in power, invited the two royal lords to climb onto the monkey's shoulders, and he flew.

When they reached the far bank of the ocean, the thoughtful monkey set the two royal lords down upon the earth.

Then wise Phra Chakri, having descended from Hanuman's shoulder, felt his spirit refreshed. He took Lakshmana his younger brother and walked through the forest, pointing out the many trees lining both sides of the road.

Rang trees shed sweet flowers, their fresh leaves hiding the sun's rays. Krabaek bloomed with crowded branches and cool shade; nang-krai branches moved when touched by the wind. "Alas, if my beloved younger woman had not gone far away from delight with me, she would come eagerly through this forest, begging to enjoy and gather golden blossoms. Seeing padauk, lamduan, and yom, with the wind carrying their sweet fragrance, is like the scent of my young beloved, and the sky-ruling lord is pierced with grief.
