This is the one-hundred-fourteenth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Indra and the gods celebrating at Kailasa after Rama's asura-subduing, Indra asking Shiva to end Rama and Sita's grief, Shiva sending Chitturat to fetch Sita from the naga realm and Chittubot to summon Rama, Sita recounting her expulsion, Shiva rebuking Rama and persuading Sita to forgive, Shiva ordering a heavenly consecration and remarriage, Rama and Sita being dressed and blessed, and the restored royal household returning to Ayutthaya.

Shiva Reconciles Rama and Sita at Kailasa

Now the story speaks of radiant Thao Hatsanai. After mighty Phra Harirak had subdued the unrighteous asura hosts, they fell and perished in heaps, and the world lived in peace and welfare. Siddhas, vidyadharas, and gods had no danger left to fear. In great delight, Indra led divine youths of every rank and the heavenly women to Mount Kailasa.

When they arrived, they bowed before radiant Phra Swayambhu, lord of the world, at the jeweled hall where the gods were assembled.

Then supreme Phra Isuan saw mighty Kosi, together with gods and heavenly women gathered in full company. He gave a divine royal command: "Hear me, Makhawan. Today gods from every heaven have gathered here. Such a day comes only once in a hundred years and is a great blessing. Let the dance begin and let all hearts be glad in this lasting auspicious feast."

Then battle-brave Thao Makhawan bowed his head with joined hands and received the divine command. He ordered the gods and all the beautiful women of heaven: "Begin the dance, to delight the eyes and offer it before Phra Isuan, lord of lords."

Then gods and heavenly women of every group received the command of powerful Kosi and rejoiced beyond measure. They began the offering dance, turning and shifting with clever secret gestures. They danced close, pressing in toward the women, then curved in circles left and right, slipping through and crossing in front to bar the women's way. They teased and turned, mingling artifice with graceful play among the heavenly women. They bent away, blocked, reached, and chased the beautiful women; they danced in mingled teasing, keeping near and not letting the women drift away. One seized a woman at the left, smiled, and cast sidelong glances, then turned back to seize another at the right in gladness.

Then the divine women watched for the timing of the heavenly gods and danced in quick circling pursuit. Whenever the heavenly women turned, the gods came in to block them; the women slipped, bent, wound about, and used playful artifice to give the gods their chance. When they saw the divine youths circle left, the heavenly women shifted right; the gods came to bar their way, and every woman stopped in place. Then they made a charming pattern, casting coy glances and fleeing; when the gods reached for them, the women slipped free. Then they danced backward in a fold of motion, beautiful as kinnaris gliding through the air, while the gods changed into reclining-woman figures and moved in pairs beside the apsaras with delight.

Then all the gods danced beside the women, slipping, weaving, reaching, and chasing the apsaras with fine skill. They drew out a circling line like swans in flight, graceful and brilliant, arms extended soft and flowing as they moved side by side. The gods danced close; the heavenly women bent aside and escaped. It was a feint to lure the gods, who reached and seized in playful confusion. The women turned away; the gods made a chasing pattern. The apsaras withdrew swiftly, never letting the gods come near. The divine youths danced in line; the women dodged and shifted. Gods of heavenly power rejoiced with the host of beautiful women.

Then the lovely divine women danced as if luring the gods, moving away and circling in and out. They stepped, swayed their arms, curved their hands, turned left and right, then danced backward to entice the gods, casting sidelong glances as a subtle device. When the gods came near, the women moved their hands like swans in flight across the sky, lovely as pure Mekhala, skillful in graceful artifice. The gods who played the instruments could not endure the sweetness of it; delighted and entranced, they rose to block the way, moving close and seizing the heavenly women. They turned and teased after them, forgetting even the fallen drums. Their hearts were delighted; heaven was happy and peaceful, dazed by the beauty of the women, and all Mount Kailasa rejoiced.

Then supreme Phra Isuan looked upon the gods and the beautiful divine women. His heart was bright with joy and welfare until the sun bent down behind the golden mountain. He spoke to Kosi, king of the gods, concerning the work of sustaining the earth, in the midst of the divine assembly.

Then Hatsanai, lord of Tavatimsa, bowed and said to Phra Isuan: "Now the world is whole because sinful and rough beings have been destroyed, their lives ended by the power of Phra Narai from Vaikuntha, who cleansed the line of evil asuras. Yet the Hari-line lord has suffered disaster and separation from Phra Lakshmi. She lives in the naga city, while the king grieves constantly. He has only his two sons in royal Ayutthaya. Both husband and wife have sorrowed and endured pain for many years. May the lord who is chief of the world help end Phra Narai's grief. Let Sita return to her husband, and the world will be happy henceforth."

Then the lord of great Kailasa heard Hatsanai's words and his heart burned with pity. He gave a divine royal command: "I grieve for radiant Phra Narai, who incarnated to sustain the earth together with beautiful Phra Lakshmi. How can it be right that they remain parted, sunk in sorrow? It is because I was careless and did not look through the whole world." He ordered mighty Chitturat: "Take the bright jeweled chariot and go receive Sita Devi."

Then radiant Chitturat received the command with joined hands and left the divine palace.

He mounted the splendid jeweled chariot and drove the brave divine horses. By his power he pierced through the earth and descended to the naga realm.

When he arrived, he stopped at the jeweled landing, stepped down from the royal chariot, and ascended to the jeweled palace of the naga king.

He announced: "There is a divine command from radiant Phra Swayambhu. He has ordered me to come down and invite lovely Phra Lakshmi to attend his feet at Mount Kailasa in lasting welfare. Where is the beloved lady staying?"

Then thoughtful Thao Wirun listened and understood without doubt, and led him to the lady's dwelling.

When they arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet of beloved Sita. Chitturat the god then reported the matter to the beautiful lady: "Now Phra Swayambhu has learned that the pitiful queen and the avatar have fallen out, and the lord of heaven is greatly troubled."

"Therefore he sent me with his royal chariot to invite Phra Lakshmi to ascend and attend Phra Suli at Mount Kailasa."

Then beautiful Sita heard the god's words and considered them: "I will be able to bow at the feet of the lord of Kailasa. Even if I die, I will not regret my life; today my thought will be fulfilled." Having reflected, she moved out in graceful beauty, lovelier than apsaras in their radiance, while Thao Wirun Naga and the women attendants followed.

When they reached the gold-bright jeweled landing, she mounted the royal chariot. The god drove the horses away from the naga world.

The chariot was a celestial car, its curved yoke blazing with gems. Its pavilion was beautiful as Indra's palace, drawn by four divine steeds. It pierced up through the earth, roaring in a thunderous sound, while gold and jewel light mingled like the moon floating through clouds. Naga women surrounded it on left and right, some carrying offerings, flowers, incense, candles, and lotus garlands. All wore pollen-scented perfumes whose fragrance spread richly through the sky. Countless attendants filled the air as they went to Mount Kailasa.

When they reached the divine golden palace, she stepped down from the jeweled chariot and went with the naga women to attend the lord of the world.

She lowered her head and bowed before supreme Phra Isuan in the midst of the assembled gods, waiting to hear the righteous lord's command.

Then Phra Swayambhu, creator by wisdom, saw lovely Sita bow before him and was glad. He spoke sweet and beautiful words: "Young Lakshmi, why did the quarrel with your royal husband first arise? What was its cause?"

Then beloved young Sita heard the lord of the three worlds. She bowed and answered his words: "At the beginning, Rama kept his father's truth and went out to live as an ascetic in the forest. I and Phra Lak, his younger brother, followed him in devotion. We lived in a hermitage near the fair Godavari, keeping the way of forest ascetics in that wilderness. Thotsakan abducted me and took me to the royal city of Lanka. Phra Lak and the avatar followed and destroyed the asuras. When the war was finished, I passed through fire before all the gods, and then he received me back to Ayutthaya, where I later became pregnant. On the day the cause arose, the king went to visit the forest. One woman asked what Thotsakan had looked like. In simple honesty, thinking her only a maidservant, I drew the asura's form for her. At once that woman vanished. When the king returned, I tried to erase it, but it would not disappear; the yaksha form only became clearer. I hid it beneath the bed. Phra Chakri found it, went mad with anger, and accused me of loving the ten-headed yaksha. At night he ordered Phra Lak to take me away and kill me. By the power of truth and purity, my life did not end. The sword became a garland of flowers." The lady reported the whole matter from the beginning.

Then supreme Phra Isuan heard Sita's words, and his pity for the queen increased greatly. "Alas, how could this have come to be, as if she were not Phra Lakshmi herself? Chittubot, mighty and wise one, take the victory chariot down to royal Ayutthaya. Find Phra Rama the avatar and tell him that I command him to ascend here."

Then powerful Chittubot received the command of Phra Isuan, bowed, took leave, and went out.

He mounted the bright jeweled chariot, radiant as the moon, and drove swiftly through the sky toward Ayutthaya.

When he arrived, he stopped by the window, raised his hands, bowed at the splendid feet, and reported the divine royal command to Phra Chakri.

Then the lord of the three worlds heard the god's message. His heart was relieved and delighted as if he had gained the wealth of all three worlds; sorrow and burning grief ended. He said: "It is blessed fortune that the lord of the three worlds has summoned me. I will go attend his feet and explain my fault and stain before his face." Having spoken, he invited his three beloved younger brothers, dear as his own life, and went at once to attend his mothers.

When they arrived, the four solar-line lords bowed with joined hands. Phra Chakri reported: "The all-knowing lord of the three worlds commands that your son attend him at Mount Kailasa. He has also summoned young Sita. Now the gods are assembled and waiting. I and my three younger brothers ask leave from our mothers' feet."

Then the three beautiful royal mothers heard their son's words and were filled with joy beyond measure, as if they had gained wealth greater than the three worlds. They raised their hands, stroked his back and face, and said: "Beloved child, jewel of my eyes, since you are going to attend Phra Swayambhu, think carefully before saying anything, so that the king's feet are not displeased. Young Sita too will return to her splendid dwelling, as Phiphek the asura said. Then we will be freed from sorrow."

Then Phra Kritsanurak, bearer of the bow, bowed his head to receive his mothers' words, joined his hands, and returned with his brothers.

When they reached the bathing place, they bathed in flower-scented divine water, put on splendid trousers and robes of differing colors, side-panels with swan-vine patterns, gold-brocade jackets, directional pendants, chest ornaments, jeweled chains, gold armlets, bracelets, diamond rings, earrings, flower ornaments, and brilliant garlands. Each wore a jeweled crown and carried a powerful sacred bow. Beautiful and proud as royal swans, all four went straight to mount the divine chariot.

The chariot was Phra Suli's jeweled chariot, its wheels and spokes set with alternating gems, its hubs all shining gold. Tiered thrones, carved panels, lotus forms, gold pillars, cresting, and five spires made it lovely as a heavenly palace. Four divine horses drew it, proud and full of power. Chittubot drove it up through the clouds, floating like the rising sun. Phraya Anuchit, foremost great soldier of the Chakri line, followed the lord of the three worlds straight to Mount Kailasa.

When they arrived, they stopped at the golden landing bright with emerald light. Rama invited his three younger brothers down from the chariot and walked up to attend Phra Suli.

They bowed at the radiant lotus feet of Phra Swayambhu with glad hearts. Phra Chakri glanced aside and saw lovely Sita; love for her filled and grew in his heart. He wanted to go embrace the beautiful lady but was restrained by awe of the lord of the three worlds.

Then supreme Phra Isuan saw the four lords of the imperial line and was pleased. He spoke beautifully: "Radiant Phra Narai, you incarnated this time with lovely Phra Lakshmi, hoping to subdue the cruel and unrighteous yaksha-asuras so that enemies and wicked beings would be ended and the whole world could live in peace. Why then have you come to this quarrel, troubling all the gods? Now Sita says that you ordered her killed. By the power of her truth she did not die, and in her helplessness she took refuge with the rishi and bore her children in his hermitage. You then seized the boys and imprisoned and punished them until they nearly died. Is this true, avatar, or was the matter otherwise?"

Then thoughtful Phra Chakri, tears crowding his eyes, sighed and bowed to answer the command: "The words the lady has reported before the divine king, from beginning to end, are all true. Your Majesty is refuge for the three worlds; please end grief and give happiness. I have done wrong, righteous lord. From now on I will not displease the dust beneath your feet."

Then radiant Phra Swayambhu heard Phra Chakri's words and considered. Sita's beautiful face was still full of heavy anger and hurt. "I must first scold Phra Chakri," he thought, "and only afterward speak evenly, showing both fault and benefit, so that her anger may end." He said at once: "How is this, Phra Chakri? Alas, how could you act so toward her? When you incarnated, I blessed you. If anyone set desire upon royal Sita, then even coming near her would burn him as if he lay in fire. Though you might be separated, no danger would come to the beautiful lady. She would remain pure as a jewel sunk in the earth. You knew this blessing clearly. Why then did you fall into doubt, become angry, and punish her as if she were not your fated consort?"

Then Rama of the solar line heard the righteous lord's words like lightning striking his body. Awed by the lord of the world and pitying soft Sita, he wept until tears fell. He bowed at the lotus feet and said: "My fault is greater than fault. Old karma veiled me so that I could not think clearly. I forgot the blessing Your Majesty bestowed on Sita. Righteous lord, please show mercy. Do not let my life end; let me serve beneath your lotus feet."

Then the lord of great Kailasa heard the avatar's words and was deeply moved with pity. He turned his face toward Phra Lakshmi and spoke a firm command: "You who are mother of the heavenly powers, Rama has admitted his old fault. This whole matter arose because of a deceitful demoness of Thotsakan's line named Adun, who plotted to kill the queen. Listen to me, Sita. Do not be so angry, beautiful one. Your royal husband does love you. Together you must sustain the world, so that all beings may rely on you. Do not keep the gods of heaven troubled at heart, lady."

Then young Sita, highest in pity, heard the divine royal command, and her spirit burned like the fire of the age. She bowed, grieved, and wept until tears flooded her eyes. Sobbing, she said: "May the righteous lord be merciful. To send me back to serve the feet of the lord of the three worlds is beyond my heart, thought, and wisdom. I have no way to save face or self. Good times and evil are far apart; I fear I cannot hold his heart free from danger. This fear is more than I can bear. Lord of the three worlds, have mercy."

Then radiant Phra Swayambhu heard the lady's sorrowful words and spoke sweetly: "You and the Garuda-bearing lord were invited by siddhas and gods to subdue asuras, so that the three worlds would grow cool. If the two of you are like this, upon whom can the earth depend? Do not hold anger so deeply, beautiful lady. Break your heart's hardness and endure the difficulty together."

Then soft Sita, a heavenly woman, bowed her head and joined her hands to answer: "Your Majesty's compassion and grace are higher than heaven. As for guarding Phra Chakri's heart, I am helpless beyond thought. If I go to serve beneath his paired feet, I will likely not escape fault. I am fit only to lose my life. Mighty lord, how will he understand your feet? Hard as it is, I would rather bow my head to hardship and endure suffering." Speaking, the lady grieved as if her life would end.

Then supreme Phra Isuan heard the lady's lament and comforted her by command: "You who are mother of the three worlds, do not grieve so greatly; it is not right. Whoever is born in the three worlds must meet both sorrow and happiness. Phra Rama has admitted fault before all the gods and heavenly powers. In days to come, if he inflicts punishment, do not dwell on that fear. Go back to love and union with your royal husband as before in splendid Ayutthaya, and live there in lasting welfare."

Then soft and beautiful Sita heard those words like divine water. The queen raised joined hands and said: "I am orphaned and without kin; I have no father or mother. I ask to live beneath your protecting power until my life ends. Since Your Majesty is kind and gives counsel, I will receive it upon my head and act according to your royal command, never displeasing your wise feet."

Then the lord of great Kailasa heard young Sita accept the divine command, and it fulfilled his thought. He was greatly delighted and turned to speak a firm proclamation with mighty Thao Kosi beside him: "Because Rama and Sita were at odds, both grieved and burned as if their lives would end. Gods, protectors, siddhas, and heavenly beings were troubled throughout the world. I, who am the world's pillar, will cool sorrow in every land. I intend to consecrate the two rulers as a supreme auspicious rite in the divine palace of Kailasa, and then bestow blessings upon them. Let the gods of heaven go prepare the ceremony."

Then gods of every rank joyfully received the divine command, raised joined hands, and went out.

They prepared the golden Phaichayon palace, laying divine seats to left and right in the middle of a jeweled throne-circle. They set up the great white parasol, hung fragrant tassels and garlands from the canopy, arranged splendid gold and jeweled baisi offerings, shining gem mirrors, victory candles, conch-vessels, and paired golden curtains. All the radiant divine implements were prepared according to the god's command.

Then supreme Phra Isuan, as the auspicious hour approached, ordered the two rulers to be adorned for display together.

Then Hatsanai, lord of Tavatimsa, and beautiful Phra Uma bowed to receive the divine command. They arranged the royal ornaments and garments, adorned with heavenly pearls and gems, and invited Narai and young Sita to bathe.

Then radiant Phra Harirak and Sita Devi entered the bathing place beside the river.

The two rulers bathed and washed in cool clear divine water. They wore perfumes mixed with flower garlands, fragrant and pleasing to both. Kosi presented Narai with royal trousers; Uma dressed beautiful Sita in a kinnara-patterned cloth. Narai wore side-panels and a shining gold jacket. The lady wore a fine brocade shoulder-cloth with soft purple vine patterns. He wore a flashing jeweled chain; she wore breast ornaments and necklaces. Both wore directional pendants, chest ornaments, armlets twined like gold nagas, diamond rings, and gem-set ornaments. Narai wore a crown of coral-bright jewels; the young lady wore a ruby-bright crown. Ear ornaments, earrings, flowers, and jewel garlands shone. Looking upon them, one might think them Kosi and Suchada in beauty.

Then supreme Phra Isuan, when the two rulers had been adorned, ordered them to come together. On the right, Thao Makhawan led the avatar, with all the gods walking beside him in ordered pairs. The three splendid younger brothers and Phraya Anuchit, the great soldier, gladly followed Phra Chakri. On the left, beautiful Phra Uma led Sita, surrounded by goddesses and heavenly women escorting the queen.

When they reached the bright consecration place, Phra Swayambhu led the two rulers up into the shining golden palace.

He seated them upon the throne beneath the white parasol, radiant as moonlight. The siddha company sat in the inner rank, gods in the middle rank with the heavenly women, and, in the outer rank, gandharvas, vidyadharas, garudas, nagas, and kinnaras in full assembly. They filled the jeweled palace in orderly rows. At the auspicious time, victory gongs were struck, Hatsanai blew the conch until the sound thundered, and righteous Phra Isuan lit the golden jeweled candles. He set them against the gem mirror, then handed them to the rishis; gods, heavenly beings, and nagas received and passed them along in order.

Round went the candles, circling from left to right. Acclamations of "sadhu" shook the world to heaven and the naga realm. Musicians sounded every instrument, plucked, bowed, struck, and blew in flowing music. Some scattered divine popped rice and flower garlands, and sweet sacred fragrances spread everywhere. Phra Swayambhu read the Vedas and bestowed blessings. Rishis, the Three-Eyed Lord, gods of heaven, and apsaras all gave blessings: may the two be lasting in royal glory, a jeweled parasol shading the world and protecting all lands through the universe; may every enemy and hostile foe be defeated by their power; may their lives be long and prosperous, and may sickness and danger not harm them.

When the seven circuits were complete, the candles were put out and the auspicious smoke was waved over the two royal lords according to the ancient rite.

Then the lord gave royal speech to the avatar and beautiful Phra Lakshmi: "Let the two rulers return to the royal city. Enjoy great sovereign wealth, complete welfare, and happiness. Sustain subjects and people, and make the dynasty prosper forever."

Then the two thoughtful rulers bowed to receive the blessing of the lord of the three worlds, each heart glad. The mighty Hari-line lord bowed his head and replied: "Your Majesty, who possesses divine wisdom, has spoken in mercy to us. Your grace is wider and deeper than the sea, higher than Mount Meru. We two ask to serve beneath the dust of your feet until life ends." Having spoken, the five rulers bowed and took leave of the supreme lord, then went with the gods to the shining chariot.

The chariot was a divine chariot not found even in the sixteen heavens: beautiful were the swift divine horses, beautiful the god who drove it, beautiful the Hari-line lord bearing the discus, beautiful Phra Lakshmi, highest in pity, beautiful the three brave younger brothers, beautiful mighty Thao Makhawan, beautiful the surrounding gods, beautiful the ornaments and graceful forms, beautiful the son of the Wind of the solar line, beautiful the banners and alternating standards, beautiful the divine musicians and the heavenly women playing songs of heaven. It floated bright through the sky toward Ayutthaya.

When they arrived and stopped at the golden landing, the lord of the three worlds spoke sweetly to the lord of the gods: "Because Your Majesty was merciful and went to speak on my behalf, the wise lord understood my feet. Otherwise I would have increased my grief forever. Your kindness is so great that nothing can compare." Having spoken, he descended from the victory chariot and entered the glittering jeweled palace.

Then Hatsanai, lord of Tavatimsa, after escorting the Garuda-bearing lord home, returned with the gods to the city of heaven.

Then the left and right palace women saw Phra Chakri receive Sita Devi and return to the joyful city dwelling. Each rejoiced greatly and raced to arrive first, bowing their heads with joined hands.

Then jeweled Phra Chakri of the solar line invited his chief queen and his three royal younger brothers: "Come, we will go together to attend the royal mothers who gave us birth." Having spoken, he set out, and the beautiful palace women followed.

When the five rulers arrived, they raised joined hands and bowed to the three beloved mothers. Phra Rama then reported the whole matter by the compassion of crowned Phra Isuan.

Then the three beloved royal mothers heard their son and saw beautiful Sita. Their gladness was beyond measure; their faces shone like bright moonlight. They moved from their shining seats and sat near the chief queen. Each embraced the splendid daughter-in-law, stroking her whole body, and spoke in lament: "Alas, my child. Do not be hurt, beloved one. Your husband was angry and ordered killing, and we mothers did not know the matter in time. Since that day we have known no happiness, only grief and longing. Morning and evening we ate tears; our hearts burned like fire." Speaking through tears, all three looked at the queen with multiplied pity, sorrowing and sighing.

Then Sita, highest in love, saw the three royal mothers grieving. The lady bowed at their feet and said: "May Your Majesties be gracious. This came about because of my own karma. In the three worlds, such things do not befall only this child. Even lofty Mount Sumeru and the four crown-islands, when the fire of the age burns the earth, become ash and dust alike. I ask to serve beneath your lotus feet until my life is laid down. Put away sorrow and grief; do not weep, royal mothers."

Then the three beloved royal mothers heard their daughter-in-law speak, and it was like heavenly nectar medicine for the heart. Because her voice and words were so sweet, their love for the beautiful lady grew all the more. They laughed and smiled together, along with all the inner palace attendants.

Then jeweled Phra Chakri, as the colored sun declined, bowed to the three royal mothers and took leave. He led Sita, his chief queen, and his three splendid younger brothers in graceful procession back to the jeweled palace.

Then young Sita, highest in pity, reached the shining jeweled chamber and looked aside to see her beloved sons. The queen was filled with joy. She embraced them, lifted them onto her lap, kissed them, delighted in their faces, received them to her heart, and said: "Mother has come to see her jewel-children. It is as if I died and was born again." The three rulers spoke together in longing and were glad at heart.

Then the solar-line lord, Narai himself, once his chief wife had returned to the royal city, was freed from sorrow. Happiness and joy increased among royal kin, ministers, wealthy householders, subjects, farmers, merchants, and all the people. Kings from a hundred cities raised joined hands and praised his might, sending golden flower-garlands, tribute, splendid goods, and treasures of every language, so that Ayutthaya seemed a heavenly city. Surrounded always by eighty-four thousand palace women, great and small, with singing and dancing in the bright jeweled chambers, he held sovereign rule and enjoyed welfare with Phra Lakshmi. When night fell, he entered the auspicious bed.
