It follows Thao Khonthan the yaksha of Ditsrisin city and his son Wirunphat setting out to hunt, brutalizing forest animals and rishis, entering Kaiyaket's frontier, demanding submission from Thao Kaiyaket, besieging and taking Kaiyaket city, Kaiyaket fleeing toward his teacher after sending for Ayutthaya's help, the yakshas sacking the city and palace, and Kaiyaket's ministers delaying the invaders by luring Khonthan and Wirunphat into the pleasure garden with court entertainment.

Thao Khonthan Seizes Kaiyaket

Now the story speaks of Thao Khonthan the yaksha, ruler of splendid Ditsrisin city, a great and surpassing support of power. He had three radiant Phaichayon jeweled palaces, high and vast, with three bright fronts, shining with gems and gold. Wealth and possessions were abundant, magnificent like a heavenly city, and his countless fourfold armies were brave and fierce in battle. His chief queen, beloved and beautiful, was named Nanda, crown of the palace women, among about fourteen thousand ladies. He had an auspicious son named Wirunphat, a yaksha of immense power, bold and able in heart. The asura king's force had no equal; he was rough, cruel beyond measure, and all three worlds feared his power. He often took his royal son to ruin the rites of ascetics, and his name was famous in every direction as a lord over the earth. One day he wished to roam in pleasure through the beautiful mountain forests. He invited his life-sharing son: "My spirit is not at ease. Come, I will take us to hunt animals for sport in the forest." Having spoken, he commanded the ministers to prepare the troops in full.

Then diligent Nanthakan received the yaksha king's command, bowed, and went out.

He levied the fourfold army for the great forest expedition. Elephant officers harnessed elephants in the inner ranks, with mahouts and handlers wearing red jackets. Horse officers hurried to saddle the horses, riders wearing gold-patterned green. Lead horses and flanking horses drove and raced proudly against one another. Chariot officers yoked golden chariots, driving smoothly as if wheels were turning by themselves; all wore black jackets spotted with gold, and three-tailed flags rose on the curved yokes. Infantry officers arranged brave soldiers in shining blue jackets, all holding weapons, common troops and officers standing in ranks along the royal road.

Then battle-brave Thao Khonthan invited his powerful son and walked to bathe in the water.

Both rulers washed in the pool, in scented water whose fragrance spread everywhere. They wore naga-patterned trousers and robes with different rice-offering designs, swan-vine side-panels, purple and green-gold jackets, directional pendants, chest ornaments, jeweled chains, gold armlets and bracelets, diamond-set rings, and jeweled crowns with bright ornaments, earrings, flowers, and ear-pieces. Each girded on a great mace, took a bow, swung it ready, left the jeweled palace, and mounted a splendid chariot.

The two royal chariots had hubs adorned with pearls, wheels and spokes all coral, and high handsome curved yokes. Their throne-pavilions were set with images, gold scrollwork, glittering jewel-posts, and three tall spires shining into the sky. Two thousand pairs of royal lions drew them. Lothan held a bow and tested the string, urging the lions on as fast as the wind. Royal insignia stood in ordered rows. Pipes, drums, gongs, and trumpets sounded together; the mustered army shouted thunderously. Dust darkened the air like smoke as the forces hurried on.

They traveled between mountains and wooded places, passing along the forest rows. Looking to both sides of the road, they admired flocks of birds: cranes on krasang trees, nori birds alighting and flying from their nests, mynas lining the kaeo trees, peacocks dancing on yang trees, parrots cooing in ket trees, partridges crowing on acacia tops, doves settling on salaeng, many-colored birds on wa trees, khao-fai birds on rok-fa, nok-khla birds coming with mates to khlai, drongos on sandy yang, pheasant-like birds among rattan, cockatoos leaping on hibiscus branches, karawik birds calling from cardamom, owls watching from mok trees, swans rising from hiang trees, and birds crying loudly from khoi and phayung. The more they watched, the more their hearts were pleased along the forest way.

He ordered the fourfold troops to halt at the edge of a field by the forest. Then he invited his powerful son to mount the royal horse at once.

They brandished shining jeweled spears and called for the yaksha cavalry, selecting only fit and able mounts, then galloped out in confusion to chase the deer.

They speared lions and wild beasts until bodies rolled everywhere beyond count. Some struggled in pain, not yet dead; the father chased and caught them, broke their necks, killed them, and sucked their blood as food. The son seized deer, pierced their eyes, and ate them at once.

Then the yaksha foot-soldiers and cavalry surrounded and chased the animals in wild confusion.

They shot, stabbed, and cut in disorder, each running to block the prey. Some caught fat rhinoceroses and cattle, broke their necks, and chewed them without striking. Some seized elephants, wrenched out tusks, broke legs, tore open chests, and pulled out entrails. Those who caught tigers, lions, and forest buffaloes rejoiced and ate them for sport.

Then brave-hearted Thao Khonthan saw the demon troops rushing to seize animals and eat them in separate groups. The asura was greatly delighted; he clapped his hands and laughed until the sound thundered through the forest.

Now the story speaks of the companies of rishis who were practicing ritual austerity in the wild forest. They lived in meditation among wide ravines and deep rock shelters. Their sacred fire-pits burned daily, increasing meditation, Veda, and ascetic power. Some practiced beneath the open sky, seated in lotus posture and enduring the sun's heat. Some walked or stood continually, steady in mind and disciplining the senses.

Then Thao Khonthan the yaksha, after the hunt was done, descended from his mind-swift horse, mounted the royal chariot, ordered the fourfold forces to move, and wandered through the forest with the dark heart of a deluded brute.

After he had gone five and a half yojanas, he saw a large high mountain with river landings and flowing streams, clean and beautiful. He ordered the chariot driven in winding pleasure. Then he saw the rishis' hermitages set along the mountain slopes, little huts arranged here and there. He thought with coarse arrogance: "These forest rishis are skilled in disciplined rites and endurance. If I leave them now, their rites will grow powerful and bold; they will teach Vedas, spells, and arts, becoming teachers to humans and gods. I, who possess power, have subdued all ten directions. In time someone mighty may rise in arrogance against my force. No. I will drive them out and destroy the perfected rishis' rites, spoiling the ascetics' vows." Having thought this, he drove his troops in to attack.

Then the yaksha soldiers each displayed power and rushed in, chasing and beating the yogins in confusion.

Then the companies of rishis, great and small, were startled and terrified when the demons charged in. Some snatched bark garments and grass-cloaks, dragging tiger skins and crying in fear. Some clutched staffs and shook helplessly, running into one another in confusion. Some hid in mountain hollows; some forced themselves into the rattan thickets; some crawled into tree-holes and hid, frightened to death and senseless. Some recited spells to blind the yakshas' eyes; those strong in meditation flew away. Some fell, some ran, and the whole forest roared with panic.

Then the powerful asura-yaksha troops shouted loudly and rushed to plunder the rishis' halls. Some found rishis and beat them without speaking. If they found spittoons or water jars, they smashed them to pieces. Some seized shoulder bags, bark robes, grass-cloaks, and all the ascetics' possessions, tearing and scattering them with cruel hearts. In the leaf huts, hermitages, walking places, and rishis' grounds, nothing was left untouched by the hands of the brutal asuras.

Then Thao Khonthan, lord of yakshas, having roamed about oppressing the perfected rishis through common jealousy, grew more deluded and proud of his power. He thought no one in sky or underworld could withstand his force. He wished to travel out and fight every city, great and small, through the three realms and make all lands lie beneath the demon lord's hand. Having thought this, he moved the royal chariot, raised the fourfold army, and passed through the forest road, shouting until the earth shook.

He crossed guardlands and mountains and entered the territory of Kaiyaket. There he saw human footprints everywhere, coming and going along a narrow traveled path. A mountain pass barred the way, high as the clouds. The demon lord paused and considered: "A frontier like this must belong to a great city." He halted the powerful army in ranks along the stream.

Then he gave royal speech to his brave ministers: "Drive the demon troops in. Break the pass and bring me humans alive."

Then bold Nanthakan received the command, bowed farewell, and sent the vanguard in to attack.

Then the yaksha soldiers each displayed power and charged in to break and fight the frontier.

Then the human people of the pass saw the demon army breaking in and destroying the place. Terrified and shaking, they fled through the forest. Men and women ran crying in uproar, faces pale and minds gone. Some grabbed children, wives, and mothers-in-law, carrying them on shoulders as they fled. Some snatched spittoons, water pots, rice pots, and lids and carried those away.

Then the asura troops, great and small, saw the people of the victorious frontier panic and scatter. The demons curved around to block them, split up, and chased through every place. Racing in confusion, searching and seizing, they caught men and women of the pass, tied and dragged them, and brought them to the army pavilion as offerings to the asura king.

Then Thao Khonthan the yaksha rejoiced when he had the frontier people, and the asura questioned them.

When he had learned everything, he commanded the senior demon ministers: "Prepare a letter announcing war and victory. Have one of them carry it into the city."

Then Nanthakan, yaksha minister, received the command of the powerful lord and wrote the letter at once.

When it was finished, he handed it to the frontier people. "Carry the yaksha king's command into the royal city and make your lord understand it clearly."

Then the chief frontier commander received the letter and crawled out swiftly, and the party went into the city.

When they arrived, they delivered the letter to the ministers, saying that now a yaksha army had violently broken in. They reported the whole matter in every detail.

Then the wise and brave ministers learned that asura demons had shattered the pass and were coming. They panicked, snatched up their ceremonial waistcloths without even fastening their belts, and hurried into the royal audience hall.

When they arrived, they bowed their heads and reported to the royal lord, crown of the realm, according to the attack that had come. After bowing, they read the letter.

The letter said: "Thao Khonthan the yaksha, mighty and brave, ruler of splendid Ditsrisin city, whose fame is known through all three realms, has come with a fourfold army to roam in the great forest. Reaching the edge of mighty Kaiyaket city, he has halted the yaksha troops and had the frontier people carry this splendid letter to Thao Kaiyaket. Come out and bow at his lotus feet. Offer the white parasol, victory, and royal sovereignty, and your life will not end. If you do not obey the royal command, he will raise the army and enter battle, according to the way of powerful kings who subdue the ten directions, making all the three worlds smooth beneath them, so that their honor remains in the world."

Then Thao Kaiyaket heard the letter and was stunned in all his body, his heart burning like fire. He thought: "The four-armed lord has walked through the forest and destroyed countless wicked asuras. How has this yaksha Khonthan survived? He comes in coarse arrogance to fight, not fearing the avatar's power. If my two mighty grandsons were here in the royal city, this being's life would end by their sacred arrows. But if I send for them to fight, the road is very far. I am old now; how can I force and crush this yaksha?"

Having thought this, he gave royal speech to the senior ministers: "Quickly levy the strong army and set it ready at every post. Place great guns along the openings and guard the royal city firmly. Then write a letter reporting the attack, and send a horse messenger to Ayutthaya."

Then the honored ministers bowed their heads to receive the royal command and wrote the letter at once.

When it was finished, they inscribed it on a gold sheet, placed it in a shining nine-gem casket, and gave it to the horse officer according to the king's command.

Then Muen Sinthopchat, chief horse officer, received the letter, mounted the mind-swift horse, and galloped along the road.

Then the ministers on left and right hurried out in agitation and gathered together at the ministers' hall.

They arranged troops to guard every frontier and all around the city walls. Every rank held complete weapons according to the written rolls. On battlements, fighting towers, and forts they placed great guns. The reserve troops were all able men, stationed five sen apart. At the great gates, they lowered three layers of barriers and set brave soldiers to guard them, swords at shoulders, stones in their mouths, shields belted and cloths tied for battle. Outside the city wall they laid stakes and thorns at every face. Inspectors went about ordering the work, and the whole city was in uproar.

Then Thao Khonthan the yaksha, when dawn brightened the night, came out to the victory pavilion.

He spoke sweet words to the ministers, great and small: "The frontier people carried the letter in many days ago and have not returned. To sit still any longer is useless. I will raise the army, slaughter, strike, and storm the city until it is taken as I desire." Having spoken, he bathed and adorned himself in brilliant battle dress, mounted the bright jeweled chariot, and ordered the great army to move. The asura hosts shouted until the earth shook, brandishing weapons like flames and racing forward in confusion.

They passed villages and country districts. The humans fled before them and did not wait. Along the road, the asuras plundered and burned towns in senseless ruin. In every village they ate cattle, buffaloes, pigs, and chickens as yaksha food. After several nights of travel, they reached the city of Kaiyaket.

Looking out, they saw the three radiant palace spires shining high and bright, rising proudly into the sky and adorned with pleasing gems. Gateways, walls, forts, and battle towers stood thickly, with three ranks of barriers and moats, splendid as Indra's city. He halted horses, chariots, elephants, and all the soldiers, then ordered his beloved son to surround the city quickly.

Then Wirunphat the yaksha bowed his head, received the royal speech with joined hands, and hurried out.

He ordered every commander according to the yaksha king's command: "Raise the army and surround the city completely."

Then diligent demon officers raised the asura troops and split them to surround the victorious city. Elephant and horse divisions moved in confusion, filling the earth until it shook. Fierce infantry pressed in boldly, pulling out the stakes in chaos.

Then the soldiers guarding their posts saw the asura forces attack in a fierce rush. The great-gun crews swung their linstocks and aimed into the yaksha ranks. Some loaded, some fired, and the sound thundered through sky and underworld.

Then the asura warriors who were struck by gunfire were wounded and killed; the unharmed ones surged forward. They roared loudly until sky and earth shook, brandished weapons like firelight, and climbed the walls by their power.

Then the human soldiers on left and right dodged along the gaps of the battlements and fought the asuras in confusion. Some shot, some stabbed, some contested the fight, some hurled weapons in disorder, and some dropped clay pots and trick-devices so that yaksha troops died in heaps.

Then Wirunphat the yaksha saw the troops shrink back and fail to fight. He grew angry like the fire at the end of the age, stamped until a crash rang out, swung his club, and drove the soldiers on: "You fear humans and will not fight? I will destroy your lives."

Then the demon soldiers, great and small, fearing the royal penalty beyond measure, all rushed in at once. Each group broke in at its own side, climbing the wall in uproar, parrying weapons in chaos, with no thought for life.

Then the diligent human soldiers did not retreat from their battle posts. Reinforcement units came up in succession. Fort guns swept the wall-walks; men cut and stabbed yakshas. Some fired matchlocks with stones held in their mouths, hidden behind the battlement gaps as they fought.

Then battle-brave Thao Khonthan saw that the asura troops still had not taken the royal city as he wished. Furious, he stamped until earth and sky shook and roared like a lion: "If the city is not taken this instant, I will cut off the heads of every common soldier and officer, ending all your families. That will repay my raising you."

Then the yaksha soldiers, afraid of the royal penalty, broke forward hard in battle. Some swung iron pestles and axes and smashed the barriers and walls. Elephant officers drove elephants in a mass, charging in to contest and pierce the gate.

The gate-panels broke and collapsed; no one could proudly withstand them. The foot-soldiers shouted and surged in, chasing the human defenders through the city.

Then radiant Thao Kaiyaket learned that the wicked asuras had broken into the city. Terrified, pale-faced and shaking, he looked left and right in helpless agitation, calling for attendants in confusion. He seized a short maidservant, thinking she was his beloved wife, no longer knowing his senses; he ran in circles through the palace women, startled as if they were demons.

When his senses returned, he took his chief queen and selected ladies up into a glittering jeweled chariot. The righteous king made a truth-vow: "By the power of merit and good action, may radiant Phra Narai of Vaikuntha come help me now. Do not let the asuras find me." When the vow was finished, he drove the chariot out through the royal gate and went to Govinda, his teacher. His close soldiers followed.

Then the palace women, great and small, saw the king flee from victorious Kaiyaket. Terror filled the whole palace. They screamed, faces pale, bodies shaking, and ran without looking back. Some carried children; some led one another in tangled groups. Kitchen women and treasury women came out. Elder attendants leaned on staffs, falling, scrambling, and clawing at walls. Everyone's face was dark with tears; no one cared for money, gold, clothing, cosmetics, combs, mirrors, or spilled ornaments left behind. Some women had no shawls. They crushed and pressed against one another to escape. Guards, scribes, household chiefs, and officers all lost their senses. Some caught up with the king; those who could not sat grieving.

Then the yaksha soldiers who had entered the city displayed themselves proudly, each showing power. They gnashed their teeth, stamped, shouted until the sound rang through the tumult, brandished weapons, roared, and chased the human troops in confusion.

They climbed into buildings, storehouses, shops, and houses, seeing countless goods scattered about. They took the gold and silver they liked, along with silk, brocade, and fine cloth. Spittoons, water-pots, trays, cups, jars, dishes, betel boxes, pots, and basins were smashed and scattered by the yakshas. Some found liquor jars, sat around them laughing, drank, and boasted drunkenly: "I was at the front; that is how the city fell." Some chose only young women, shouting and quarreling as they seized them. Poor and noble households alike suffered under the asuras' reckless will.

Then battle-brave Thao Khonthan saw his soldiers enter battle and take the city as he had imagined. He was filled with delight, clapped his hands, and laughed. Then he drove his sky-bright jeweled chariot in through the fortress gate.

He looked closely at the walls, each face well built and adorned, with fighting towers, women-lined galleries, and grand gateways, magnificent with patterned iron and stone. Golden dragon flags stood in rows between the battlements. Gun-embrasures held rows of jeweled guns, great guns, shot-cannon, and trick guns. The roads were smooth and clean; buildings, storehouses, and shops lined the streets; elephant houses, horse houses, troop huts, chariot houses, and gardens stood in sequence. Guardhouses, left and right police quarters, ministers' halls, the great palace court, water passage, moon-field, and tiered jeweled walls appeared in order. The three great palaces were slender and splendid, all made of gems, with graceful roof-edges and adorned gables. Crystal terraces shone like Tavatimsa. The more he looked, the more his spirit was delighted.

Seeing the families of city people whom yakshas had seized and brought together, he stopped the bright jeweled chariot and proclaimed: "Where is your lord of Kaiyaket now? Bring him before my victory chariot. I want to see his face."

Then the yaksha captains bowed their heads and answered the command: "We do not know where Thao Kaiyaket is staying. We have caught only ministers and present them beneath the dust of your lotus feet."

Then brave Thao Khonthan heard the wise ministers and questioned them by royal command: "Hey, city people. Where is Thao Kaiyaket? Tell me. Do not hide it, or your lives will end."

Then the ministers of Kaiyaket city, frightened almost senseless, raised joined hands and answered the command: "The lord, crown of the city, feared Your Majesty's power and fled out of the royal city. We do not know where he has gone. As for all of us servants, we have no refuge. Mighty lord, please preserve our lives."

Then Thao Khonthan, lord of yakshas, heard and laughed loudly through the moon court. The demon king commanded: "I had already sent a letter. Your lord boasted in arrogance. Good. Why then flee the city? He is not ashamed before subjects and people." Having spoken, he descended from the royal chariot, proud as a great lion, and walked with his powerful soldiers into the audience hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the white parasol and spoke to the yaksha host about having won the royal city.

Then Wirunphat the yaksha, delighted at having conquered the city, considered: "I have enjoyed intimate pleasure with naga women, kinnari women, and lovely heavenly apsaras. But I have never yet bound myself in desire to women of human birth. How sweet and beautiful might they be? I will go enjoy them today."

Having thought this, and while his royal father lay asleep on the couch, he bathed, adorned himself brightly, and wandered out.

He entered the glittering palace and saw the women attendants on left and right sunk in great grief. The asura's heart was pleased.

He sat down among the women, smiled, and addressed them with sweet words: "Beautiful young ladies, why are you troubled and distressed? You are gathered here. Do you not know me?" Speaking, he teased the palace women, saying he would dry their tears so they should not grieve. Then he seized one lovely woman's hand, turned to pull a woman on the right, stroked another's back with sidelong glances, and reached wildly for cheeks and chins.

Then the heavenly-beautiful women were terrified of the asura yaksha, shaking as if their lives would end. Each pulled away from his hands and turned her face aside. They called for the elder women and eunuchs, crying loudly and running in confusion.

Then Wirunphat the yaksha pursued the beautiful women, snatching at their shawls and reaching in confusion.

Then the palace women, great and small, screamed in terror and ran into the sandalwood chamber.

When they arrived, they shut the doors, threw the bolts, fastened the bars firmly, and hid from the asura yaksha, every woman among them.

Then Wirunphat, yaksha of the solar line, spoke pleasant words: "Is it right, my jewels, that you show no mercy? My love is beyond measure, so I worked my way in to see your faces. By closing the doors, do you think you will escape me? Will door-panels like these withstand my power?" Having spoken, he shoved swiftly, and the doors broke and collapsed under his hands.

Seeing the women there, the yaksha rejoiced. He lowered himself near the ladies and spoke sweet words.

"Why did you run into this room? How did you not escape me, soft young sisters? Alas, because you have no mercy, you cried out for help in such confusion. I alone was shaking too, frightened and startled in spirit, fearing the elder women, grandmothers, and superiors who hold authority. Strange, where have they all gone? Why have they not come to help my beloved young sisters?" Speaking, he smiled again and again, slipping his hands through and reaching in confusion.

Then the palace women, great and small, with no thought or way left, pushed, shoved, and pulled away from his hands. They would not look at the asura. Unable to hide any longer, turning their faces aside, they answered: "We are humans and greatly fear your fierce power. We fled in the hope of saving our lives. Your Majesty should not touch us indecently. It is not fitting; we are only servants. Royal women exist in every city, beautiful and high-born, with wealth, attendants, and noble rank, fit for Your Majesty, crown of yakshas, to share love and pleasure with. Think, restrain yourself, and preserve your honor. Keep the dust beneath your feet pure. Hear your little servants, mighty lord."

"Heart of my heart," he said, "your beautiful speech is sharp as a razor. Your teasing, clever words are wondrous, finely made. With forms like heavenly women, how can you call yourselves servants? Even royal women on earth do not stir love when they are not one's match. You are like lotus blossoms in the jeweled pool at the center of the world: stem raised, petals open, beautiful to eye and heart, beautiful in petals, scent, and pollen, all graceful and desirable. I will cherish you and let no stain touch you." Speaking, he teased the beautiful women, praising eyes, hair, cheeks, and flower-like faces, while the asura kept reaching wildly.

Then the beautiful women, compelled by fear, raised joined hands and answered: "The truth is that we are servants; we do not speak to deceive. Phra Phrot, lord of the earth, is our master and lord. If you come to join with us in pleasure, bad karma will cling to you later. Even if Your Majesty is of royal lineage, how could you prevent that consequence?" Speaking, the lovely women pushed away his hands, turned their faces, and edged back. Some wept in grief as if their lives would end.

"How sharp, how sharp," he said. "There are no words like yours. How have you all thought together to speak so, ladies? The custom of solar-line kings is to raise the fourfold army, kill in war, attack, win the city, and possess every right in it. All wealth, attendants, and treasure now belong to whom, dear ones? What sin or karma can there be? Do not plead that point. As for your husbands, they did not love you, heart-beloveds; they abandoned you here in the city. Why suffer and grieve over that? I will cherish and guard you gently; I will not hold you with a heavy hand." Speaking, he wrapped his arms around them, full of desire.

He kissed breasts, eyes, hair, and cheeks, smiling and pressing against the beautiful women, teasing as he went, delighted beyond measure. Filled with lust as if he had gained a heavenly kingdom, he forced his desire upon them. When that was finished, the yaksha lord roamed through the whole inner palace.

He violated the young palace women in every chamber, sparing none, wandering through both the shining palace of Phra Satrut and Thao Kaiyaket's palace. He snatched women on the left, then shifted to tease women on the right. The asura was joyful and delighted, like a rut-maddened elephant rushing through a herd, turning and chasing through the palace women with great pleasure.

When he had finished his pleasure in every royal sleeping chamber, he descended from the splendid palace and went to the victory hall.

Then the ministers of Kaiyaket, great and small, consulted with the elder palace women: "Khonthan has taken the city. It seems he will sweep the families away to the yaksha world, and the army from Ayutthaya may not arrive in time. Let us devise a way to invite him to visit the trees in the pleasure garden. We will arrange palace women to entertain and bind the demon lord. Perhaps his mind will become joyful and enchanted, dazed by pleasure, until the two younger brothers of the Narai avatar can arrive and destroy the asura." When they had agreed on the plan, Thao Khonthan the yaksha came out to the jeweled audience hall, and the ministers went in before him.

Each crawled in to attend, bowed with joined hands, and said: "Your Majesty, who possesses mighty power, has come to rule the victorious city, but has not yet visited the trees in the beautiful pleasure garden, where flowers and fruit grow in abundance. It is a place of deep happiness and delight."

Then Thao Khonthan the yaksha heard and rejoiced. He gave command: "Hey, Nanthakan. Arrange all the soldiers, great and small, and yoke the bright jeweled chariot. I will go play in the flower garden."

Then Nanthakan, yaksha minister, received the command of the mighty lord, offered joined hands, and came out.

He arranged the troops by proper order in every left and right position. Inspectors checked and organized the ranks, urging every division forward. Lots were drawn for the front and rear rope-lines. Selected guards carried guns in rows; next came the golden-lance troops; after them the club-bearers in pairs. They stood densely along the streets, parasols and flags crowded between the ranks. The glittering jeweled chariot was prepared, waiting for the yaksha lord to proceed.

Then the elder women and palace supervisors gathered and arranged the beautiful ladies, all of radiant marks. They included singers, dancers, and graceful women of intelligence and skill, slender and young, adorned in beauty like kinnaris. Female guards and officers inspected them and called them together loudly; short servants, hunchbacks, foreign entertainers, and eunuchs all came to wait on the asura.

Then Thao Khonthan, lord of yakshas, and his life-sharing son walked to the bathing place.

Jeweled sprinklers scattered water, and the two rulers bathed. They rubbed on royal perfumes. The father wore green-gold patterned cloth with lion designs; the son wore soft purple cloth with mixed dragon and qilin borders. Their side-panels had garuda-vine designs. Their golden jackets flashed bright. They wore directional pendants, carved chest ornaments, flashing jeweled chains, armlets, gold bracelets with gems, diamond and jewel rings on every finger, crowns, earrings, flowers, ear ornaments bright with rubies, and hanging golden garlands. Each took a great bow. Surrounded by lovely women, they flowed gracefully to mount the royal chariots.

The two pleasure chariots had curved yokes covered with gold, dark-inlaid frames, wheels, hubs, thrones, and crestwork in ordered beauty, tiered with images, jeweled side panels, hanging floral pavilions, shaped pillars, and five spires lovely as heavenly palaces. Four thousand lion-beasts drew them. Lothan held a spear raised high and drove them as fast as wind. Royal insignia streamed, pipes, drums, gongs, and trumpets sounded together, and the escort shouted until all trembled. The ministers of mighty Kaiyaket led the procession to the pleasure garden.

When they arrived, they stopped at the jeweled landing. The two rulers stepped down from the pearl chariots, and the young palace women followed.

They wandered, admiring the trees, heavy with flowers and fruit: mango, marang, ma-sang, phawa, custard apple, roi-lin, in-chan, lamduan, bunnak, saoyut, chat-buts, sugar apple, nom-sawan, roses, saraphi, jasmine vines, phikun, roses, champak, mangosteen, santol, guava, starfruit, durian, longan, lychee, langsat, sugar palm, kalumphi, water chestnut, wa, pear, prayong, inthanin, nang-yaem, yothaka, pine, soi-fa, maha-hong, hidden-lover flowers, butterfly pea, khantharong, ka-long, ket, and kaeo in rows. The two rulers plucked blossoms, called the women, handed flowers to them, and teased and reached in gladness throughout the flower garden.

When the sun had set and gone down behind the mountain ridge, they walked gracefully up into the bright pavilion.

Then the beautiful palace women, terrified beyond measure, crouched and attended the asura against their will. Some served with fans, waving soft wind; others came in to wait on him, filling the pavilion.

The women musicians began plucking, bowing, striking, and blowing together. Their singing was sweet and soul-catching, slow, lamenting, and sorrowful.

The dancing women danced, turning their hands and moving in patterned lines, stepping gracefully in pairs. Then they circled and changed postures, shifting into phala and shoulder-level patterns, kinnara figures along shining cave-edges, beautiful to anyone who saw them.

Then Thao Khonthan the yaksha sat upon the shining jeweled throne and watched. Seeing the young women, their love-making gestures, and their charming ways, his mind was seized and delighted; desire burned in him. He descended from the jeweled throne, blocked the beautiful women, kissed their cheeks, pressed against their flower-like faces, and reached among them by turns.

He rejoiced and was delighted with the beautiful inner-palace women, forgetting Ditsrisin city, his own happy and delightful home, forgetting his hundred thousand palace women, and forgetting his beloved chief queen. He played in the flower garden for many days and nights, then mounted the pearl-adorned chariot and ordered the demon army to return to Kaiyaket city.
