This is the one-hundred-seventeenth and final สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows the heavenly celebration after Wirunphat and Thao Khonthan are killed, Bharata and Shatrughna entering Kaiyaket with Mongkut and Lop, Phrot's grief for the palace women and Thao Kaiyaket, the recovery of Kaiyaket from Govinda Rishi's hermitage, the return and restoration of Kaiyaket city, the feast and rewards for the allied armies, the princes' return to Ayutthaya, Rama sending Bharata and Shatrughna back to care for Kaiyaket, and the closing royal account of Rama's righteous reign and the composition of the Ramakien.

The Return from Kaiyaket and the Completion of the Ramakien

Then the assembled gods of every mansion in the six heavens, together with the lovely apsaras, saw Phra Lop and Phra Mongkut, scions of the discus-armed lord, kill the gandharva Wirunphat and all his armies. Each rejoiced, laughed, and clapped loudly. Some plucked, bowed, struck, and blew instruments; some sang until the sound rang out. Some scattered heavenly popped rice and mandara flowers down upon them, acclaiming them and giving victory blessings until the sound shook the city of heaven.

Then the scions of lord Narai, when they had finished killing the asuras and the gods had scattered flowers upon them, saw blossoms strewn everywhere over the field, fragrant and sweet. The two princes and all the monkey soldiers smelled them, wore them, and played with joy. Then the princes walked with royal grace, beautiful as lion cubs, and came to attend their royal uncles.

Then the two younger brothers of lord Narai saw their beloved nephews approaching and at once descended from their chariots. Phra Phrot lifted Phra Mongkut, and Phra Satrut lifted radiant Phra Lop. They kissed and embraced them, received their living spirits with joy, and spoke sweetly: "You have not failed as scions of Phra Harirak. Your power and sacred might are brave. You have destroyed the unrighteous ones in ruin and will become supports of the world in time to come." Having spoken, each mounted his chariot and ordered the tenfold armies, great and small, to move. The shout shook the three worlds as they entered Kaiyaket city.

Then the ministers on left and right, and all the women, men, subjects, and people learned that the four royal lords had killed the gandharva and were bringing the army into the city. Each rejoiced many times over, and the victorious city filled with loud excitement. Some carried children, some led grandchildren, and the elders could not remain still. They went to welcome the kings, filling both sides of the royal road.

When they saw the two scions of Phra Hari riding the royal chariots, their forms surpassed all marks of beauty, like gods descending from heaven to earth. The monkey army stretched beyond sight; banners fluttered and drums sounded. Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut, brilliant in victorious battle dress, rode in jeweled and golden chariots amid hosts of humans and giants. Everyone bowed their heads, joined their hands, and blessed all four princes: "May your power and greatness uphold the world."

Then radiant Phra Phrot of the Solar Line urged the great army into the moon-palace. He ordered the victory chariots halted by the shining emerald platform, and the four princes walked together into the great audience hall.

He lowered himself onto the shining pearl throne amid wise ministers, and the lord asked: "Where is our royal grandfather now? Which servants or soldiers have gone to attend at his feet?"

Then the honored ministers bowed and answered the command: "The royal grandfather seems to have gone to take shelter at Govinda Rishi's dwelling. As for the palace attendants and ministers, no one knows who followed him."

Then the palace women, great and small, heard that the two mighty lords were in the audience hall. Thinking of themselves and fearing fault, as if their lives would end, each came up together and waited for the righteous king to enter.

Then Phra Phrot, lord of the Solar Line, walked into the great heavenly palace.

He lowered himself onto the bright jeweled couch and looked upon the beautiful palace women. The lord felt deeper suspicion. After a moment he commanded: "Beautiful ladies, I went to attend Phra Chakri, and the asura took the victorious city. Have you all lived in comfort, or what grief has struck you? How did the yaksha king favor you, that your faces shine like the moon?"

Then the palace women on left and right heard the royal command as if lightning had struck them. Their pain and shame were beyond measure. They lowered their faces and bowed to his glorious feet; tears flooded every woman's eyes, and grieving, they answered.

"We, servants beneath your feet, were not false or crooked. When the gandharva took the victorious city, fear was beyond counting. We looked for refuge and could think of none; our minds and hearts were trapped. We suffered grief and sorrow as if life would end. Even if we were not defiled, it was as if we were, because we were in the yaksha's hands. Lord, show mercy." Speaking so, they wept together.

Then Phra Phrot of the Solar Line heard the palace women and grief pressed his soul. He said nothing. His heart burned as if struck by an arrow, and he walked into the jeweled chamber.

He reclined on the shining golden couch, laid his hand across his face in sorrow, and silently turned the matter over in his mind, his chest burning like end-time fire.

"Alas for the palace women, lovely as heavenly apsaras. They once served in happiness night and day; the giant has come and wounded the heart. This anger and this love are beyond thought. My heart is small, as if tears of blood would fall. O breast, what can I do? Attachment overwhelms me. And not only have I lost what I loved, but my grandfather too has left the fair city. He will waste away in grief every moment, weeping and lamenting. He is old. In the forest he will be full of suffering, enduring rain and sun always. What sickness may afflict him? He raised me with compassion, and I have not repaid that kindness." The more he thought, the more he sighed. The king did not sleep.

When dawn cleared and the sunlight shone bright across the sky, he walked out from the royal audience hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the white parasol's light. Ministers and servants attended together, bowing everywhere. He commanded glorious monkey Sukhrip and the senior ministers: "Prepare the great armies. We will go out to follow the royal grandfather."

Then honored Sukhrip and the ministers of Kaiyaket city received the command and took their leave together.

The son of the Sun arranged the monkey troops with vigor, and the asura-giants were inspected in noisy confusion. The ministers of Kaiyaket's royal city levied all the human soldiers. Four crowded armies, commoners and officers together, stood in marching order. All carried every kind of weapon, countless on left and right. Horses, chariots, and elephants were harnessed, waiting for the princes to move.

Then radiant Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut, with the two young royal nephews, came to the bathing place.

The four princes cleansed themselves and bathed in fragrant water. They wore jeweled trousers with black-gem patterns and different naga-crest designs. The two uncles wore purple and green-gold robes with gold scrollwork; the two boys wore heavenly cloth with three-layered patterned borders. Each put on fluttering side-panels, shining gold jackets, ruby chest-plates, naga armlets, rainbow-bright rings, and radiant crowns. The uncles wore flower crowns; the nephews wore heavenly circlets with crest-jewels and pearl ear ornaments. Like gods from celestial mansions, uncle and nephews came together and mounted the chariots.

The four royal chariots had jeweled hubs, wheels, and spokes; curved yokes and floating thrones rose in tiers. Gold tracery, picture-panels, jeweled pavilions, leaf ornaments, five gem-set spires, and graceful gold details shone. Eight pairs of spirited horses, fierce as lions, drew them. Charioteers urged them on; royal insignia and golden banners stood in rows. The sound of music roared over the earth, wheels thundered, and every escorting troop shouted proudly as they hurried forward.

They crossed streams, mountains, and forests; trees and undergrowth broke and fell, unable to withstand them. Without resting the great army, they went straight to the hermitage of the righteous ascetic.

Then Thao Kaiyaket, with the Solar-Line household, palace women, ministers, and troops, was staying in Govinda Rishi's hermitage. They heard the growing roar and confusion, shaking through the earth, the sound of chariots and troops drawing nearer. All were startled, frightened, and trembling, thinking the gandharva-yaksha had raised his army and followed to kill them. Men and women cried out in confusion. Some ran to clutch the rishi's feet; some dragged at him in panic. The sound roared as if a world-ending fire had begun.

Then the wise and brave sage thrashed, cried out, fell, rose, and spoke in terror: "Oh, cursed laymen and women, how can you do this to me? What is the cause and end of this matter, that you drag me and make me suffer?" The more he spoke, the more they clung to him. He shook and flung them off left and right, pale-faced and sweating, his tiger skin and bark cloth in disarray.

Then radiant Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut came by the forest road near the hermitage enclosure. They ordered the armies, asura and monkey, great and small, to halt. The four princes descended from the victory chariots and entered the leaf hall.

When they arrived, they bowed to the lotus feet of the learned ascetic, then bowed down before the royal grandfather's feet.

Then great Govinda Rishi, panting and breathless, spoke: "Just now you threw me into turmoil. Laymen and women dragged at me, the spittoon spilled, my betel knife and rosary disappeared. I fell and scrambled almost to death; the more I ran, the more they clawed after me."

Then Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut heard this and pitied their grandfather. Each embraced his feet and wept.

"O crown of our heads, you left your home to live in the forest. Your whole body is worn and thin, and your color has grown dark. Alas, you raised your grandsons, yet we did not come to serve beneath your feet. When war first reached the victorious city, we were grieved that we were not there to fight. It is shame enough to die, but worse to lose a city to yakshas. What strength is there in being noble brothers of Phra Hari, the lord who rides Garuda and descended to destroy the unrighteous, if this thorn of the earth could stand? Speaking so, they wept as if life would end."

Then royal Thao Kaiyaket embraced his two grandsons, tears brimming on his face, and lamented with fine words: "Beloved lights of my eyes, if you had been in the moon-palace, could the giant have taken the city? In an instant he would have died by your victorious arrows. No one can fight your war-skill. But I am very old now. I guarded the city for many days until the yaksha forced his way in. My power and knowledge were spent; I could not withstand him. I waited for my beloved grandsons, but you were gone. After losing the city, we fled and came to take refuge with this great teacher. Grandsons, without that, we would have died. How could you have known your grandfather's heart? O what suffering, what hardship, how heavy this time has been." Speaking so, he bowed his face and held the two grandsons in grief.

Then radiant Phra Mongkut and Phra Lop, with the palace women, attendants, and ministers, saw the king and all the others weeping in love for one another. Each brushed away tears, deeply grieved as if near death. Some sobbed and mourned; the sound rose in confusion, like sala and rang trees bent back and forth by a hard wind, pitiful to see.

Then great Govinda Rishi saw the five kings grieving, together with ministers and palace women. He said: "Laymen and women, why do you grieve in separation as if the dead had parted from the dead? I see no need for it. By nature, all who are born into this world have no lasting substance. Happiness, suffering, heat, and trouble are in all ten thousand world-systems; no one is exempt. Settle and extinguish this instead. Listen to the words of an elder. Too much sorrow wears down the heart; too much sickness destroys life."

Then radiant Thao Kaiyaket heard the noble words of the ascetic sage. His grief and worry eased somewhat. He raised joined hands, bowed to the lotus feet, and sweetly asked his grandson Phra Phrot: "That unrighteous jealous gandharva-asura: when you two marched here, how did you meet his power? And these two little princes, are they scions of Phra Hari? Why are their forms so splendid and bright, like gods in the Tusita heaven?"

Then radiant Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut heard the royal words, raised joined hands, and answered the command: "These two young princes are scions of the lord avatar. They were born from the chief queen, the heavenly mother. Their names are Lop and Mongkut; their sacred arrows shake the earth. When the avatar learned the message that had been sent, he commanded us to come clear away the enemy. With the two of us, they made four armies, complete with glorious monkey troops. When we reached the edge of the city gate, we learned that your royal dwelling had been lost to the gandharva-yaksha. Without resting even a moment, we hurried into battle. His son Wirunphat came out to fight, and Lop killed him. As for elder Phra Mongkut, he killed the gandharva. Not one yaksha soldier escaped. When all was done, we raised the army and came after the royal grandfather."

Then Thao Kaiyaket learned that victory over the asuras had been won, and the lord rejoiced. He lifted the two princes into his lap, kissed their faces, received their living spirits, and said: "Look at the younger one, clear and spotless. Look at the elder, like a jewel set in gold. Their complexion, human marks, and faces are like Phra Chakri's own making. Brave and skilled in war, they killed the gandharva. So small, yet with such power, unequaled through all ten directions; whoever sees their supreme arrows is blessed. When I thought of you, my heart failed. Hardship and bodily suffering have been heavy. From the time you were in your mother's womb until birth, you lived many years in the forest. Through wars with your two uncles and your radiant father, I thought your lives might end; by merit you came to be known. May you both prosper in welfare, continuing the imperial line, shining like the sun, a jeweled parasol over the three worlds."

Then the two princes, noble in disposition, bowed their heads to receive the royal lord's blessing, paid homage, and answered: "Because your majesty has shown mercy and compassion, your kindness is over our heads beyond measure. Your loving grandsons ask to serve at your feet until life ends."

Then radiant Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut addressed the royal grandfather: "Now the evildoers are finished. We ask your majesty to return into Kaiyaket's royal city and make the people glad according to righteous custom."

Then Thao Kaiyaket heard his two beloved grandsons, his life-companions, and rejoiced that all was as he wished. He raised joined hands to the lotus feet of the great holy adept: "I fled the enemy and survived because I took refuge at your feet. Otherwise I would have died by the hand of the gandharva-yaksha. Your kindness is beyond measure, heavier than sky and earth. I, your lay follower, ask leave of my teacher to return into the royal city. May you remain in welfare, free from suffering, grief, and sickness."

Then great teacher Govinda heard this and blessed them: "May the five kings go in lasting welfare. May you enjoy abundant wealth and live together in gladness and peace. May all false enemies and foes be defeated in power throughout the earth."

Then radiant Thao Kaiyaket and the four royal grandsons raised joined hands and received the blessing with joy. They bowed at the feet of the meditation-strong teacher, left the leaf hall, and the palace women and ministers followed.

When they reached the troop camp beneath the great banyan tree, the five kings bathed with joy and put on bright, beautiful ornaments. Lovely in body, form, and splendor like gods descending from heaven, they walked gracefully and mounted the shining golden chariots.

The five royal chariots were handsome and bright, with glittering jeweled hubs and wheels, golden tiered thrones, Garuda and lion images, jewel scrollwork, shining pavilions, and beautiful spires. Ten pairs of strong horses, leaping like lions, drew them. Charioteers held yak-tail whisks and spears and drove swiftly as wind. All the royal insignia were beautiful; the princes' chariots led, the royal grandfather's chariot shone, the ladies' escorting chariots were beautiful, and Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut formed the rear guard. The soldiers, great and small, were splendid, and the sounds of pipes, gongs, and victory drums went in ordered ranks through the five armies. Elephants, horses, and chariots thundered. Dust covered the air; trees and undergrowth bent and fell as the troops hurried on.

They crossed streams and forested mountains, gazing at the kinds of peaks: high, jutting, and overhanging the sky, ledges layered upon ledges. Some were like hanging tassels, white and yellow in shining bands; some held solid stone platforms, flame-like points, openings, tiers, caves, and streams. Springs broke through, roaring and splashing like spray. Trees were thick with flowers, blossoms falling into the water. Wind touched the flowers and carried the fragrance of pollen. Fish crowded and grazed, swimming through the current. Five kinds of lotuses rose, some buds, some blooms, with old and young pods and leaves. Bees and many kinds of insects hovered and drank fragrance. Along the stone slopes at the mountain edge, herds of four-footed animals moved everywhere, playing and testing strength. As they looked, the princes hurried the army onward.

After traveling many days and nights through the dense forest, the five kings were joyful. They enjoyed seeing many kinds of birds and trees, and in seven days they reached the city. He ordered the victory chariot halted by the bright emerald platform, and they walked up into the jeweled palace.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne, bright with pearls, beneath the great white parasol, shining all with quick flashes of jewels.

Then ministers, counselors, palace matrons, inner attendants, pages, and young servants all saw the lord of the city return to the royal home. They rejoiced like the dead meeting life again and came to attend the powerful righteous king.

They bowed their heads at his feet and crouched thickly to left and right, unable to hold back tears, grieving and lamenting.

The ministers said: "O powerful lord, you had never before been separated from your city. How could it be right that you were scattered into the forest, suffering hardship and distress? We who serve beneath your feet suffered more than a broken heart, because we fell into the yaksha's hands and nearly lost our lives." The palace women said: "O lord of the earth, when you left the royal city, we servants and attendants ran after your feet but could not reach you. All thought and strength were gone from us. We beat our breasts in separation and grief; we suffered pain without ceasing because of the arrogant giant. If your four Solar-Line grandsons had not come to protect our heads, we would have lost our lives. How would we have seen your royal feet?" Speaking so, every beautiful woman wept and sobbed, faces bowed, until the sound filled the moon-palace.

Then Thao Kaiyaket saw the ministers and palace attendants weeping and lamenting. Compassion and sorrow filled him beyond thought. The powerful king sat silent for a while, then said: "By nature, all who are born in the three worlds meet both suffering and happiness; no one can escape them. When karma has come, one must go with it. Do not grieve or burn in worry." Having spoken, he left the shining throne and walked into the splendid palace.

He reclined on the jeweled couch, bright with pearls, beautiful in royal rank and wealth like divine treasure. The sounds of lutes, gongs, and music rang pleasingly. Palace women sang in harmony and lulled the righteous king. Form, taste, scent, sound, and touch drew him with delight, and after midnight he fell asleep on the heavenly bed.

When the moon's light was gone and the sun topped the mountain, he bathed, put on brilliant ornaments, and came to the bright audience hall.

With ministers and servants gathered around him, heads bowed at his glorious feet like stars encircling the moon in the night sky, he spoke sweetly and commanded the great ministers, small and large, to feast the entire army, officers and common soldiers alike.

Then the honored ministers bowed to receive the royal command, made obeisance, and went out at once.

They ordered the palace staff to write notices and give them to the four chief cooks, telling them to prepare rice and food to feast the great army.

Then the senior male and female cooks received the notices, distributed supplies in confusion, and set about boiling and cooking in commotion. Some roasted beef, grilled cakes, fried fish-cakes, and prepared every kind of salad and spiced dish; there were bitter curries, rice noodles with sauce, food, liquor, fruit, duck, chicken, side dishes, and every kind of savory and sweet. They arranged everything on tables and trays and had the attendants carry it out. Some bore loads on poles, some carried them on shoulders and backs. In confusion they came along the great road and set everything in rows before the bright royal court.

Then the monkey and yaksha soldiers who had come from every city gladly ate the feast together. Group by group, they gathered around trays, took cups, and passed distilled liquor around. Monkeys drank and passed it to giants, pretending to take turns back and forth. Some grabbed side dishes of pork and chicken; drunk and joyful, they laughed. Yakshas teased monkeys, monkeys tricked yakshas, and some clapped and danced in chatri style. Some played, leapt, and tumbled wildly; some grabbed young kitchen women. Some vomited and fell about, senseless, and the whole city rang with noise.

Then Thao Kaiyaket, brave in war, when the army feast was finished, gave royal rewards. He bestowed splendid ornaments upon the four royal grandsons, and he rewarded the monkey and yaksha hosts according to rank. Rings, silver, gold, and countless gifts, every kind of thing that pleased the heart, he gave to all groups of ministers and soldiers.

Then radiant Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut reported to the royal grandfather: "Now the royal work is finished. Your beloved grandsons ask leave to go to victorious Ayutthaya, the royal city, and report at the avatar's feet how the asuras were destroyed."

Then Thao Kaiyaket heard his royal grandsons and spoke: "Go and tell the four-armed lord that I, your grandfather, bless him with victory and glory. Since his sons came to fight, the asuras' lives have all ended. If I had not relied on his feet, Kaiyaket city would have become a captive of the gandharva, and each passing day would have led toward disappearance. His kindness is vast and great, without equal in earth or sky. Each day I see no one here; old age and sickness press me. I am like a tree near the riverbank, hoping to entrust my corpse. Let Kaiyaket city remain beneath his lotus-foot dust." Speaking so, he praised the two young princes, beautiful as Brahma moving like a swan: "My sons, bow and tell your radiant father to send these two uncles of yours back to me."

Then the four Solar-Line princes bowed their heads to receive the royal command, raised joined hands, and took leave for the victory palace.

When they arrived, they ordered the younger brother of Pali and the senior ministers of Kaiyaket: "Prepare the whole army. We will return to Ayutthaya, the royal city."

Then the two brave ministers received the powerful lord's command, raised joined hands, and returned together.

The lord of Khitkhin inspected the monkey troops, and the asura-giants from every city were counted complete. The ministers of great Kaiyaket organized human officers and common soldiers in loud confusion. Inspectors checked them busily; all were complete according to the rolls of those who had come. The four armies were crowded and stood in ordered ranks to left and right, each bearing every kind of weapon, splendid like Indra's army.

Then the four Solar-Line princes, bow-bearers, when golden light spread over earth and sky, walked to bathe in the water.

The four cleansed themselves and bathed in fragrant streams. Each put on fine trousers with curved dragon patterns. The uncles wore cloth offered by gods, pierced with scrollwork and gold borders; the two boys wore heavenly waistcloths, three-layered and gold-bright. They wore swan-vine side-panels, shining brocade jackets, regular necklaces, three-strand chains across the chest, bracelets, armlets, and rainbow-glittering jewel rings. The uncles wore flower crowns with hanging earrings and ear ornaments; the two boys wore jeweled circlets. Each girded on a sword and took a bow, beautiful and graceful as they came to mount the chariots.

The four royal chariots had bright jeweled hubs and graceful curved yokes, tiered carved thrones, and floating panels. Lions and Garudas held coiling nagas in the shining images; the pavilions flashed with gems and golden spires. Four pairs of spirited horses, prancing like royal lions, drew each chariot. The charioteers urged and struck them, rushing like the sun's chariot. All the royal insignia stood complete: jeweled fly-whisks, parasol rows, flags, pipes, horns, gongs, and drums sounding together. Dust thickened in the air; wheels shook and thundered. The escorting soldiers shouted wildly and hurried the army forward.

They traveled through the spaces of Himavanta, gazing at many birds. Junglefowl perched in rok-fa trees; mynas in ket trees murmured together. Parrots perched in kaeo trees in pairs; doves sang from khoi. Anchan birds perched on chingchan trees; five-colored birds lined the wa trees. Green pigeons brought their flocks to plao; koels called from cardamom. Owls looked about from mong; swans stood by hiang beside their mates. Vayuphak birds perched on eaglewood branches; nori birds preened their tails in rak trees. Magpie-robins perched on mangrove; nok klang stood along lep trees. Crows perched in tumka; partridges flew from acacia. Gulls rested among nang-nuan trees; peacocks danced from yang and flew away. Nok sak gathered on teak; doves brought their flocks to bamboo. The four princes delighted in the sight and hurried the great army on.

They crossed ravines, mountains, and streams, traveling with joy through the forest. After many nights and days they reached Ayutthaya, the royal city. He ordered the great victory chariots halted by the bright emerald platform, and the four princes walked up into the shining palace.

Each bowed at the lotus feet of the radiant arm-born royal lord, the three royal mothers, and young Phra Lakshmi. Phra Satrut, the younger brother, and the two beloved royal nephews also bowed to Phra Lakshman with loyal joy. Then they reported the whole account to lord Narai: how they had cleared away the asuras; how Phra Mongkut killed the gandharva; how Phra Lop killed Wirunphat; how all the yaksha troops lost their lives with none left; how afterward they raised the army and followed the royal grandfather in the deep forest to the hall of Govinda Rishi; how they invited him back to the palace; and how he sent word to the lord's glorious feet that old age now pressed him and he entrusted his corpse beneath those feet.

Then the Solar-Line lord Narai rejoiced as if enjoying the heaven of the six divine levels. The three royal mothers and beloved Phra Lakshmi praised the two princes, received their living spirits, gave victory blessings, and blessed them. All ten royal persons together were beautiful like an assembly of gods. The palace women stood everywhere with joined hands, lovely as kinnari. The whole palace was beautiful like a mansion in Tavatimsa. Phra Chakri's fame and honor shone like the lord of heaven. They greeted, questioned, and praised one another until the sun slipped behind the mountain, and each went into the bright jeweled chamber.

As for the lord of the three worlds, he reclined on one couch with his queen, beautiful as gold beside a jewel, a sight pleasing to any eye.

Then the palace women on left and right, eighty thousand princess-born ladies, all lovely and beautiful in form, adorned themselves perfectly and gracefully, and came together to attend the king.

Some served with fans, waving them to stir a soft breeze. Some sat on lamp-duty, each according to her appointed office.

The singer-women sang and answered with sweet voices; they plucked, bowed, struck, and blew instruments, fitting the rhythms together. Ramana drums, thap drums, clappers, and cymbals sounded beautifully like music of heaven. The voices bent, lamented, and flowed until the sound caught the soul.

The dancing women danced, stretching their arms and tracing gestures left and right. They circled like swans in graceful motion, lovely as heavenly women. Then they turned circles and shifted left, moving the phala song at shoulder height; every palace dancer bent soft arms and shifted into the horse-polo dance. All the dancers moved in good rhythm with the instruments, serving Phra Chakri at the splendid bed.

Then the lord of the three worlds listened to the music and narrative song and watched the dancing women. Form and sound delighted him; the sweetness was like heavenly music. The fragrance of sandalwood and blossoms was sweet, and the righteous king drifted into sleep.

When midnight had passed and dawn drew near, cool rain fell from the sky, and the moon bent away from the heavens. Wind moved gently, carrying the fragrance of flowers and pollen. Bees and insects hovered and drank from blossoms. The voices of cuckoos and roosters, sweet lutes and music, pipes, drums, horns, and conches rang out. The lord woke and rose.

He cleansed and bathed, put on royal ornaments, and walked out with swanlike grace, beautiful in body, color, and bearing, to the bright audience seat.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the white jeweled parasol, with kings and lords from every city bowing with joined hands everywhere before him. He was beautiful like Indra going out among the gods, great and small, before the three-fronted victory mansion. The king gave command: "Phra Phrot, Phra Satrut, beloved younger brothers beyond measure, our royal grandfather has no sons or grandsons with him. Go rule beneath his feet. Uphold fair Kaiyaket city and let him live in royal happiness. And you monkey kings who rule cities, great and small, now that the dangers are finished and Kaiyaket has been recovered, return to your royal cities. Be glad and live in peace. Protect your subjects and people, and do not let them suffer trouble or stain."

Then radiant Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut, with all kings and lords from every city, raised joined hands and received the royal command. Joy and flourishing welfare filled every face. Each bowed farewell and left the victory audience hall.

When they reached the royal court where the armies, great and small, were stationed, some mounted chariots and mind-swift elephants, some flew up into the sky, some rode vehicles and litters, some marched with escorts in confusion, and some walked upon the earth. The armies divided and went away to every city.

Then the lord of the three worlds lived in happiness, enjoying heavenly pleasure with Sita Devi in the royal city of Dvaravati, like the sun shining on the four continents. Having subdued the whole earth, he stood as the enduring crown of the world. He upheld the ten royal virtues, mighty with the power of his arrows. False enemies and foes through all three realms feared his majesty. His fourfold army and possessions were beyond counting, with subjects, citizens, and warriors crowding inside and outside the city. His great palace was vast like Tavatimsa. Eighty thousand beautiful palace women served the lord forever. He had two royal sons like bright diamond discuses, beautiful in form and dear as his own eyes and ears. His mighty soldiers could part the sea, go beneath the earth, fly through the sky, and move swiftly; all were gods who had come to serve. He had a royal astrologer with eyes like divine sight, seeing clearly in all ten directions, knowing all Vedas, spells, medicines, auspicious times, stones, months, stars, and every matter. Glorious Ayutthaya, Kaiyaket, and Mithila were filled with unmatched delight, and all the people rejoiced together, because the lord who rides Garuda had descended with Phra Lakshmi, together with Phra Phrot, Phra Lakshman, and mighty Phra Satrut, to uphold the three worlds and subdue the wicked yakshas. Some were freed from curses; some died; some went to the heavenly shore. Indra, Brahma, Yama, gods and adepts great and small, rishis in the forest, Garudas, and nagas were all glad. His merit made the world flourish, surpassing all great kings, upholding the earth. Everywhere, all bowed their heads and joined their hands. Some brought flower garlands, beautiful gold and silver flowers, lovely daughters and granddaughters, fine horses and elephants, nine jewels, and many-colored cloth as tribute at his feet year after year, sheltered by Phra Chakri's power like four heavenly white parasols spread over the whole great universe. The three worlds were smooth and peaceful like the face of a victory drum. Through the full span of the three ages they all lived cool and happy. His honor lasted through the ages of sky and earth like letters carved in gold upon stone, praising his majesty in every land and district. This tale from ancient times is truly pleasing, fragrant to the heart like sandalwood. The royal composition of the Ramakien was made with diligence according to the old story and sacred tale. It is not any lasting essence, but a celebration and act of worship according to the royal heart. Whoever listens should not fall into delusion; let them contemplate the impermanence of compounded things. Thus the ordered verses have been spoken by royal wisdom, and the work is complete.

The tale of Ramesa destroying the race of asuras is ended. The righteous king composed it, desiring again and again to celebrate the Lord and to give completed joy for reading, singing, and dancing. On Monday, the second waxing day of the first month, the lord of knowledge, surpassing the world, first began composing this Ramakien of Rama and Ravana in the year 1119, year of the snake.
