Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the twelfth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Thotsarot's journey to Romaphattan to invite Kalaikot, the plea carried to Kailasa, Narai and Lakshmi accepting incarnation, the gods descending as monkey allies, the royal fire-rite in Ayutthaya, and Kakkanasura stealing part of the divine rice for Montho.

Thotsarot Travels to Romaphattan

Then radiant King Thotsarot slept through the night. When the sun's light shone bright, jewel-cuckoos and roosters called, sounding like the watch-drums. Bees flew, circled, and sang, bathing in fragrant pollen. The sounds of horses, chariots, elephants, soldiers, and brave warriors filled the air in tumult. The earth thundered and shook as everyone called out and gathered.

The king woke from his couch, his royal heart glad and happy. He left the golden-jeweled chamber and went to bathe.

He bathed and refreshed his body, put on fragrant pollen-perfume, trousers with naga designs at the hem, and red cloth patterned with rice offerings. His side panels were gold-vine work; his upper garment was brocaded with interlaced vines. He wore directional plates, a carved breast ornament, shining melon-shaped diamond chains, golden armlets and serpent-shaped bracelets, blood-gem rings, a divine jeweled crown with directional flowers, fine earrings and ear ornaments, and a hanging nine-gem garland. His hand grasped bow and arrows. Beautiful in body, dress, and ornaments, he walked to the holy sages.

When he arrived, he bowed his head in reverence and invited the four teachers to come down from the bright palace and mount the victorious chariots.

Beautiful was the royal chariot, its wheel hubs set with emeralds, its three curved yokes soft and graceful, its tiers and finials ranked with ornamental panels. Lion forms stood braced in rows; Garudas held nagas with heads thrown back. The five-spired golden palace roof shone, lovely like the sun's heavenly palace. It was harnessed to four pairs of noble horses, bold like lion-kings. The charioteer held a spear and drove swiftly as wind. Umbrellas, streamers, and banners adorned it, their tips snapping. Dense troops marched in escort; gongs and drums answered one another. The chariots of the great holy men followed in order. Dust darkened the air in cloud and haze as the crowded procession moved through the forest.

They traveled through fields, valleys, and hills, crossed streams and mountain waters, and viewed flocks of birds calling and settling on many kinds of trees: saeng-saeo birds in khanthrong, swans on kathang branches, mynas talking together in kaeo trees, benjawan birds moving through rattan, doves calling in khoi, koels singing from cardamom, owls watching from mok, prahit birds paired with their mates in hiang, parrots in ket trees, kalumphu birds combing their tails in bamboo, peacocks leading their flocks to yang trees, small birds playing along liap, noris grooming in rak trees, partridges calling from krathin, barabun birds in sattaban, and karawen birds climbing through vines.

As he viewed the forest, the king traveled on and lodged overnight in the middle of the wild. Chariots and troops hurried along the forest road.

When they reached the royal bathing river at the edge of splendid Romaphat city, he halted the ministers and the army at the forest border.

Then he gave a lion-like command to the great minister: "Go into the victorious city and report clearly why we have come."

Then the minister of rank received the command, bowed farewell, sprang onto a horse, and hurried away.

When he arrived, he dismounted and went to the great ministers at the council hall, reporting according to the royal command.

Then the wise and brave minister learned that the descendant of Thao Atchaban, lord of heaven and earth, had brought a fourfold army. Awed by the power of the supreme lord, he led the ministers of Ayutthaya into the bright jeweled royal hall.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet of radiant Thao Romaphat and reported: "The crowned lord of victorious Dvaravati has now brought a great army of ministers and troops. He is at the inner frontier and has sent a general to attend at your feet."

Then Thao Romaphat learned that the divine-line king had come with glorious retinue. He froze in shock and thought anxiously, his heart burning like flame: "Why has the son of Thao Atchaban brought an army here? What does he want? Ah, perhaps he desires my daughter." Having thought this, he asked the minister: "For what business has he come?"

Then the well-mannered minister heard the lord of earth's command, bowed, and answered: "The divine-line king has brought brave troops because he hopes to invite the teacher Kalaikot, who holds knowledge, to help plan the ritual with the band of holy men: the fire-rite that will bring mighty royal sons, in purity and welfare."

Then splendid Thao Romaphat heard the great minister and rejoiced, all suspicion cleared from his heart. He gave royal command to the great ministers: "Hurry and prepare the whole army. I will go receive the righteous king."

Then the diligent ministers of Romaphat received the command, bowed, and hurried out together.

They arranged skilled troops, choosing only bold and brave men. One division wore sky-blue coats and marched at the head of the army. One wore Indra-bow coats and pink headcloths in alternating colors. One wore Tani cloths and red velvet coats, moving gracefully. One wore senakut coats and shining Garuda-vine headbands. One wore gold-bright mohair coats and red star-scattered cloth. One wore dark blue coats, swords at their waists, and held spears swinging. They also prepared the state elephants and flanking elephants according to the order of the army.

Then Thao Romaphat, when the troops were arranged, came to the bathing pool.

He bathed and refreshed his body, put on sweet fragrant water, adorned trousers with curved borders, and gold cloth wrapped about the waist. His side panels were pierced in curling vine work; his hanging panels had emeralds alternating with rubies. His upper garment had gold-ground interlaced designs; his jeweled belt was set with gems. Directional plates, a carved breast ornament, red-gem chains, golden armlets, raised bracelets, and diamond rings shone brightly. He wore a great nine-gem crown, flowers at the ear, and pearl ear ornaments. He grasped the divine jeweled sword and mounted the excellent royal elephant.

The royal elephant was beautiful, a great chief elephant of the whole realm, high and large. Its tusks curved upward, white and bright; it was born in a noble line. Ears and tail were well-formed; its ornaments shone gracefully. Throne seat, rear seat, high regalia, and banners were splendid. Flutes, drums, and gongs answered one another; the sound thundered through the forest. The army hurried along the forest road.

After five and a half yojanas they reached the border of the splendid city. He halted the army at the forest edge, came down from the elephant's neck, beautiful like created Makhawan, and walked gracefully with swinging arms while all the ministers followed.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet of King Thotsarot with joy, according to the way of great royal friendship.

Then the lord of the Hari line and the discus rejoiced that his intention had been fulfilled. He spoke by royal command: "We heard news that rain was withheld, and rice, betel, and goods became very dear. Were you negligent in the ten royal virtues, or did some other cause arise?"

Then splendid Thao Romaphat heard the royal words, raised joined hands, and answered: "I myself lived within the ten royal virtues and did not turn aside from the path of dharma. Whatever command I gave, I was not deluded by passion. It happened because the teacher Phra Kalaikot had perfected strong meditation. Therefore rain did not fall, and the people were hungry for three years. I devised a strategy and had the rishi's meditation broken. I invited him into the city, and from then onward the rain fell well."

Then King Thotsarot heard the beautiful words and answered: "It was the karma of beings that caused disorder; the holy man cannot be blamed. He came to end distress and cool the heart, and this is known through every city. I have brought my troops hoping to invite the rishi to establish the fire-rite in Ayutthaya."

Then King Romaphat heard the sweet words and rejoiced as if he had gained the sixteenth heaven. He raised his hands in reverence and said: "Please let your lotus feet move with the troops, horses, and chariots into the royal city, as an honor to me and so that you may meet the rishi in auspicious welfare. Lord, show mercy."

Then the solar-line lord of Narai's house heard words like heavenly nectar and ordered Sumanthan the minister: "Prepare horses, chariots, elephants, and brave soldiers for the army, ready at dawn. We will go together into the city."

Then Sumanthan, minister of rank, received the divine-line king's command, bowed farewell, and went out.

He harnessed horses, chariots, and elephants, arranged soldiers great and small in the outer and inner lines, and prepared them to wait for the king's departure.

Then brave King Thotsarot, when dawn's sunlight shone, adorned himself, grasped the sword in his hand like a god floating through the sky, came out from the golden pavilion, and mounted the victorious chariot.

He had the army move. Dust rose and darkened the air. Splendid King Romaphat led the tenfold army forward.

They crossed streams and fields and moved through mountain slopes, hurrying troops and soldiers into the royal city.

Then splendid Thao Romaphat led the king to the city. The king descended from the elephant and halted at the bright jeweled landing. Bowing his head at the lotus feet, he said to the lord of Ayutthaya: "Please, mighty one, come up with the holy men to visit Phra Kalaikot the siddha in the adorned jeweled palace."

Then the brave divine-line lord heard Romaphat's sweet words. He invited the four rishis to come down from their adorned royal chariots. The two kings followed the holy men and went up to the jeweled palace.

When they arrived, they raised joined hands and bowed to Phra Kalaikot the rishi. The four great sages paid respect in proper order.

Then Phra Kalaikot, strong in meditation, saw mighty King Thotsarot with the four great holy men. He said: "Look, powerful king, crown of the world and of created men. For what reason has Your Majesty come to Romaphattan?"

Then the solar-line lord whose power shook the earth answered by command: "I came seeking the holy one because the common asuras are arrogant, bold, and fierce. They oppress the three worlds, even up to the sixteenth heaven. I wish to have mighty sons, so I gathered all the holy men. They said that the teacher is skilled in vows and famous in knowledge. May Your Majesty show mercy, so that the world may be happy. Please, wise one, grant me sons of power."

Then Phra Kalaikot the rishi heard the king of Ayutthaya and reflected: "He seeks a powerful one to subdue the foolish yaksha hosts and make the three worlds smooth and level. This seems a great matter." Having thought this, he gave blessing: "Look, king who bears the discus. If you wish for excellent sons to be refuge of the three realms, only if Narai incarnates will he be able to destroy all those fools. I will help the lord of earth accomplish what his heart intends."

Then King Thotsarot heard words like heavenly nectar. He bowed at the sage's feet and answered: "Your Majesty's mercy and compassion have no end. Now the three worlds will be cool because they have relied on the holy one's merit."

Then the four ascetics were all glad and happy. They fanned and served the teacher, while the two mighty kings were happy and at ease, massaging the feet of the wise and restrained one.

When golden light illumined the world and the sun rose over the mountain peak, mighty Thotsarot raised joined hands and said: "I invite Your Majesty, who holds strong vow, knowledge, and meditation, to go to splendid Ayutthaya together with me today."

Then Phra Kalaikot the rishi heard the king's words and spoke beautifully: "Let Your mighty Majesty take the troops ahead. This rishi-form will follow on foot and arrive at the city at the same time."

Then King Thotsarot heard the great holy one, bowed, and answered: "If Your Majesty will go later, that is as you wish. I will have the four famous ascetics remain with the sage." As he spoke, he gave instructions to Thao Romaphat, bowed farewell to the rishi, and walked down gracefully from the great jeweled palace.

He reached the landing, mounted his royal chariot, and ordered the fourfold army of left and right to move out from Romaphat city along the forest road.

Kalaikot Carries the Plea to Kailasa

Then Phra Kalaikot the rishi, after Thotsarot had moved his army out, counted seven days. Seeing that the king had passed along the forest road and had nearly reached the territory of his city, he thought: "I and the four holy men must go together according to the promise." Having thought this, he spoke to beloved Arunawadi: "I have business, and I ask leave. Lady, remain happily here. Even if I go, I will not be long. I will return to see your beloved face." Speaking, he felt longing, but forced himself to leave the sleeping chamber.

He invited the four teachers, strong in vow and meditation, and they flew up into the clouds by swift power.

When they reached Ayutthaya, wise Phra Wasis led Phra Kalaikot into the adorned royal hall.

Then the bow-bearing lord of the imperial line hurried troops and chariots and lodged seven nights along the road.

When he arrived, he stopped at the jeweled landing, descended from the splendid chariot, and walked gracefully up to the beautiful royal hall.

He saw the five ascetics and rejoiced deeply. Raising his hands, he bowed at their feet and spoke: "I came several days ahead, yet I did not overtake the teacher. As for the fire-rite, how shall it be done, holy one?"

Then Phra Kalaikot the rishi heard and answered: "Lord, do not worry. The five of us will go attend and first report clearly to the Lord. We will invite mighty Narai so that the lord of earth may be incarnated."

Then the crown of Ayutthaya heard the teacher Kalaikot and answered: "Your Majesty will go up to attend the Lord on beautiful Mount Kailasa. I am glad. Holy one, please hurry."

Then the great teacher Phra Kalaikot and the four wise siddhas flew away together by power.

They floated through the air and reached the mountain of Kailasa. The five wise sages went in together to attend Phra Suli.

Then radiant Phra Swayambhu, seeing the five sages, gave divine royal command: "Look, Phra Kalaikot, strong in awakened wisdom and bravery. Why have you teachers come together to this place on Mount Kailasa?"

Then the ascetic Phra Kalaikot heard the sweet divine command and answered: "Now an age of suffering has arisen in the world, and beings endure burning distress like scorching fire. The bands of yogins lack places to prosper in contemplation because the three great lords have granted boons, weapons, arts, and arrows to the yakshas. Therefore they roam in arrogance, bold, crude, and swollen with power. I see only Thotsarot of the solar line, descendant of the supreme lord of the discus, like a jeweled parasol guarding the crown, whose lotus feet all directions rely on. But he has no famous son to continue the great royal line. Please invite Narai to incarnate and subdue the foolish asuras. Then the three circles will be cooled; he will be crown and refuge of all heads, and his fame will be known throughout the earth. Lord and crown of the world, please show mercy."

Then supreme Phra Isuan heard and gave divine command: "Do you not know the matter? This age is the Treta Yuga, and suffering has arisen according to the way of the world. To have Narai descend, he must incarnate from Vaikuntha." Having spoken, Phra Suli gave divine command to Thao Makhawan: "Go invite Narai here."

Then Hatsanai, lord of the Thirty-Three, together with the mighty gods, bowed farewell and flew away.

When they reached the Ocean of Milk at the foot of the great Chakraval mountain, they saw mighty Phra Narai sleeping on the naga's back. Nang Phra Si was at his left, and radiant Phra Lakshmi at his right. Kosiy and the gods bowed together in reverence.

Then beautiful heavenly Phra Lakshmi saw Makhawan and the gods bowing before the discus-bearing lord. The mother of the three worlds asked the lord of the Thirty-Three: "Look, Lord Amarin. For what reason have you brought the gods here?"

Then wise Kosiy reported the whole matter from the beginning: "The three worlds are in distress. Now Phra Swayambhu, crown of Mount Kailasa, has sent us to invite the four-armed lord to go at once."

Then Phra Lakshmi gave a divine royal command: "This matter is understood. But the Lord has only just gone to sleep, and I fear royal punishment if I wake him. If the matter is urgent, lord of the worlds, wake the discus-bearer from sleep."

Then radiant Thao Hatsanai heard the divine command, raised joined hands, and immediately blew the conch. The gods played music: clear strings and song, loud trumpets, victory drums, and a tumult of performance.

Then Phra Narai, lord and refuge, was sleeping deeply on the great serpent king's back. Hearing the thunder of music, he started awake, amazed in spirit. He rose from his sleeping seat and saw Lord Hatsanai with all the divine hosts gathered below. He greeted them and asked at once: "For what reason have you come to me?"

Then wise Thao Kosiy answered the command: "Now the five ascetic lords have come to report to the Lord that the three worlds are hot as corrosive fire. Therefore the crown of Mount Kailasa spoke sweet words and sent me to invite the feet of the lord who rides the royal Garuda-bird to leave the Ocean of Milk and go attend the gathered assembly."

Then Phra Narai, Thao Makhawan, and the gods reflected. Narai thought: "I must incarnate to subdue the yaksha demons. They all have power, arts, arrows, and shining weapons. If I go alone to fight and kill them, it will not be easily completed; the body will suffer greatly." Having thought this, he turned and commanded: "Look, lovely Lakshmi, beloved mother of the world. I have incarnated to destroy asuras in nine earlier times. Now these asuras have power; I think this will be harder than before. I invite you, my life-companion, and also the naga king who is my throne, to descend and help subdue the age so that the world may be happy." Having spoken, he took conch, Moli discus, jeweled wheel, and mace-weapon, led Phra Lakshmi from the seat in the Ocean of Milk, and the two mounted the great Garuda. The naga and the gods followed.

When they reached Mount Kailasa, he invited his beloved lady and Phaya Ananta Naga to enter and bow before Phra Suli.

Narai Accepts the Avatara

Then radiant Phra Isuan saw mighty Phra Narai, beloved Phra Lakshmi, and the serpent king who served as throne-seat. The lord of earth rejoiced and told the four-armed lord the matter: the world was distressed like fire. "In this age, you must incarnate and subdue the foolish yakshas. Become the son of King Thotsarot in the city of Ayutthaya. Then you will be refuge for the three worlds and cool grief in every direction. Your fame will be known throughout the world until the end of the age."

Then created Phra Narai heard the righteous lord's command. He bowed and answered: "Your Majesty orders me to incarnate and subdue the foolish yakshas so that the whole earth will be level. This time they seem to have great strength. I have subdued them through many ages, and the three circles have been happy everywhere. But in this age the asura yakshas are radiant in power, sacred might, and greatness. If I alone destroy the unrighteous, the yaksha race will not be wholly ended. I ask that the diamond mace, the discus, the great right-turning conch, and the naga who is my royal throne be born with me in the royal line in the imperial great city, to destroy the unrighteous blind fools. I also ask that Phra Lakshmi, beloved mother of the world, and the gods become attendants, so that they may help kill the kumbhandas."

Then supreme creating Phra Isuan heard the Garuda-riding lord and spoke: "This age has been known before, that the world would suffer in the time ahead. Therefore I have arranged divine troops and gods to wait and help kill the enemies. They have all been born in the line of the splendid monkey-king, both in Chomphu and Khitkhin cities, each one wise and skilled. Go and be born as a king of the great imperial solar line, named Phra Ram Avatara in the place of splendid Ayutthaya. The discus will become famous Phra Phrot, next after Narai his elder brother. The conch and naga-throne will become mighty younger brother Phra Lak. The excellent mace-weapon will become war-skilled Phra Satrut. Beloved Phra Lakshmi will be born in Lanka city, named lovely Sida, daughter of the ten-faced yaksha. Go in auspicious prosperity, with no sickness, danger, or harm."

Then the gods, great and small, each volunteered before the lord of earth, asking to become soldiers of the Avatara and destroy the foolish asuras who cruelly oppressed the world in every place. Mighty Rahu would be a soldier named Nilpanan. Phra Phinai would become Nilek. Phra Phinek would become Nilakhan. Phra Ketu would be the minister Kumitan. Phra Angkhan would become Wisanthawi. Phra Himmaphan would become Komut. Phra Samut would become Nilrat the splendid monkey. Phra Phloeng would be minister Nonnon. Phra Sauri would become Nilphanon. Phra Suk would become Nilpasan. Phra Hat would become Malunthakeson. Phra Phut would become mighty Surasen. Phra Chan would become Satphali. The two lineages of Wirunhok and Wirupak would become Keyun and Mayun, splendid monkeys. The other divine monkey-warriors were recorded in seventy-seven account-books.

Then supreme Phra Isuan heard the hosts of gods. The lord smiled brightly and gave blessing to all the gods: "Even if yakshas kill you, let Phra Phai blow and return you to life."

Then the gods in every group received the blessing of Phra Suli with joyful hearts. They bowed at the Lord's feet, taking his power as protection over their heads. Each one bowed farewell and then descended to be born as monkeys.

Then the crown of Mount Kailasa, when the divine hosts had gone, rejoiced. He granted the resurrection-mantra to Phra Kalaikot the rishi: "Set up the fire-rite. A mass of fire will rise. Then an asura-form will appear, holding a tray of heavenly rice above his head. It will rise in the middle of the ritual fire. A crow-demoness will swoop down and take the rice. She will seize half of one lump, and that crow will fly south. From it young Sida will be born, a flame within that burns the asura. The remaining three and a half lumps of rice will produce four radiant sons in Ayutthaya city, all skilled and powerful."

Then Phra Kalaikot the siddha, when the crowned Phra Isuan had taught him the knowledge and ritual mantra, remembered every detail. He invited the four great ascetics, took leave of the Lord of the earth, and flew to Ayutthaya city.

They came to the palace dwelling. The teachers, strong in meditation, walked together into the royal hall.

Then King Thotsarot saw the five holy men and bowed joyfully before them. He asked: "You went to attend radiant Phra Isuan and reported my matter. How did the lord graciously decide?"

Then the great teacher Phra Kalaikot gave blessing to the lord of earth: "This rishi-form went to attend the lord of the world and reported every cause in detail. Phra Isuan rejoiced and had Phra Narai invited. The discus-bearing lord accepted the incarnation. I have brought back all the substance and will tell it clearly: everything will be accomplished. Lord, do not let your heart be troubled. Set up a royal ritual hall, nineteen rooms wide and great, in the victorious court, in time for tomorrow's auspicious hour."

Then the radiant imperial lord heard and rejoiced. He raised joined hands to the teacher and spoke sweet words to the brave and wise minister, ordering him to build a great ritual hall according to the holy man's directions.

Then Sumanthan, minister of rank, received the command of the divine-line king, bowed farewell, and went out.

He had the royal ritual hall set up, nineteen long rooms, high and great, bright in square form and filled with ornaments. The ceiling was made with hanging tassels, all draped with pearl garlands. Royal fences, parasols, and grand banners made it beautiful like a divine palace. At the center stood a nine-gem seat with a shining white parasol planted above it. Offerings were set in ordered rows, complete according to the royal command.

Then the bands of great rishis learned that the five sages had gone to attend radiant Phra Suli, received the powerful resurrection-mantra, and returned to establish the great rite. Each put on bark cloth and shoulder cloth and hurried into the city.

Then the five teachers, strong in meditation, once the assembly of siddhas was ready, entered the ritual hall together.

They had all the ascetics sit in rows around the outside. In the inner level, the four sages restrained their senses and stood at the directions. Phra Kalaikot, the teacher, entered the fire-rite, offered worship to the excellent lord, restrained his mind, and they all recited the Veda together.

When three nights were complete, the earth shook and thundered. Fire arose as flame and smoke; its light shone brilliantly. Suddenly an asura appeared, holding a golden tray above his head. He rose in the great fire. On the tray were four delicious lumps of heavenly rice, their fragrance spreading thickly through the ten directions. It reached as far as the island of Lanka by the power of the rite.

Kakkanasura Steals the Divine Rice

Then Nang Montho, splendid demon lady, was in the bright palace. The queen smelled the scent and it caught her heart. Longing and distress arose; she could not endure her hunger. She raised joined hands and begged her husband: "Lord of earth, show mercy. Whatever delicious fragrant thing has entered my nose, I desire it beyond endurance and have no wisdom left. It is as if my life will end. If I do not gain what my heart wants, my life will perish." As she spoke, the lady grieved and lost her senses.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line saw her pleading and grieving. The asura slipped in and embraced her. He spoke fair words: "Jewel of my eyes, beloved one, why grieve so deeply? I will find it for you, young lady." Having spoken, he ordered Kakkanasura, brave kinswoman of his line: "Fly up into the sky and follow this sweet fragrance. Search through all ten directions and bring back the divine flavor. I will reward you fully for this service."

Then Nang Kakkanasura the yakshi received the command, offered joined hands, and changed her body.

In an instant the yaksha form changed into the body of a great crow-demoness, huge and mighty. She flew up swiftly into the clouds.

She circled and looked through the sky across every small and great continent. She saw the bright ritual hall inside splendid Ayutthaya city. The scent of divine food and delicious flavor rose clearly into the air. Rejoicing, she flew straight down and swooped on the fire-ritual hall.

Then the company of great rishis, reciting and restraining their senses, heard the noise and were startled. They opened their eyes from meditation and looked out. They saw a huge crow whose two eyes were red like firelight, flying through the sky. It swooped straight down with force. One side of the ritual hall collapsed. The ascetics leaped up in panic, running about with their wits gone.

Then Nang Kakkanasura the yakshi destroyed the hall to pieces by power. The bird saw the kumbhanda holding the golden tray above his head, with four lumps of heavenly rice. She plunged down, bold in heart, seized half a lump in her beak, and flew away.

When she reached the royal dwelling in Lanka, she changed from crow-bird form and held the delicious lump of heavenly rice, bringing it in to offer to the asura king.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line received the rice with joy as if he had gained a wish-granting jewel. Its perfume, scent, and flavor filled the nose. He handed it to his chief wife: "Jewel of my eyes, eat and be happy."

Then Nang Montho, excellent young lady, received the grand heavenly rice and ate at once. Its flavor pervaded every hair. No heavenly food could compare with it. Her complexion brightened and shone; her face was like the stainless moon.
