Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the thirteenth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives the distribution of the divine rice, Narai's descent into Kausuriya's womb, the queens' conception, Thotsarot's forest excursion and battle with Heranthathut, the birth of the four princes, their naming, and the assignment of nurses and attendants.

Translation

The Divine Rice Is Distributed

Then radiant King Thotsarot, when the appointed nights were complete, rejoiced. He led his three chief queens, all bearing excellent marks as if drawn by a master hand, down from the sky-bright jeweled palace and straight into the royal ritual hall.

He bowed his head in reverence at the feet of the great rishis and offered flowers and worship in the midst of the ascetics.

Then Phra Kalaikot the ascetic saw King Thotsarot and spoke: "The ritual work is now finished as desired. Delicious heavenly rice has arisen through the power of ascetic action. But the common Kakkanasura flew up and swooped away half a lump. This accords with righteous Phra Isuan's word. The remaining three and a half lumps are stainless." Having spoken, he took up one lump of heavenly food, sweet with flavor and fragrance, and gave it to young Kausuriya: "Eat it and prosper in welfare." Then he took one lump and handed it to beautiful Nang Kaiyakesi. To Nang Samut Thewi he gave one lump and the portion left by the crow.

Then the three beloved queens received the heavenly rice and ate it with glad hearts. Its scent and food-flavor were sweet beyond comparison, soaking and filling the whole body and senses.

Then the five great rishis and the bands of yogins, when the rite was complete, gave blessing: "May Your Majesty remain in happiness. We teachers ask leave first." Having spoken, they all went out from Ayutthaya city.

Then King Thotsarot, his intention fulfilled, rejoiced as if he had gained the sixteenth heaven. He led the three excellent queens, faces bright and bodies beautifully adorned, their arms swinging softly in graceful movement, back to the jeweled palace.

Narai Descends and the Queens Conceive

Then radiant Phra Narai, when the auspicious hour arrived, raised joined hands and took leave of the Lord of the world. He invited beloved Phra Lakshmi and Phaya Ananta Naga: "Come. I will take us all." Having spoken, he descended in incarnation, and the three worlds shook and trembled. He entered the womb of young Nang Kausuriya. The jeweled discus entered the womb of beloved Nang Kaiyakesi. The mace, conch, and naga-throne came into the womb of lovely Nang Samut. Bright-faced Phra Lakshmi, his beloved life-companion, entered the womb of young Montho on the same day as the discus-bearer's incarnation.

Then divine youths and heavenly women of every group saw mighty Phra Narai and Phra Lakshmi with one heart, together with mace, discus, conch, and naga-throne, incarnate from the great Ocean of Milk to become great humans whose power would destroy danger. Each of them scattered divine garlands, bowed, and gave blessings. Conches rang until the sky thundered, and the gods began to dance.

They shifted and turned with clever, subtle changes. They wheeled in circles, winding and twining. The gods spread their arms to bar the women, catching and pulling at the edge of a shoulder-cloth, weaving in and out in crossed motion. The heavenly women turned aside; the gods pressed closely after them. The apsaras circled left; the divine lords circled right. The women turned to entice the gods, making as if they would not let them come near. The beautiful apsaras watched for their moment to turn and bend, tossing aside the hands of the powerful gods. Every god was deeply delighted.

Then the beloved apsara women danced in enticement, moving near with sidelong eyes and waiting for the moment. When the gods pressed close, the heavenly women played coyly and slipped away. They danced and postured like horse-polo players, drawing the shining gods into pursuit. They changed hands, circled, and shifted shoulders. When the divine youths came near, they turned away, swinging aside and pushing the gods' hands, circling left. The gods changed steps, dancing like peacocks with tails displayed. The women danced with pillow-like arm movements, casting glances and moving beside them. The divine youths danced the cave-edge pattern; the women danced with shoulders level like a cliff. The gods danced close in teasing joy, and the heavenly women were happy and delighted.

Then the gods in their groups danced close with the divine women, pretending to reach and seize with secret playful gestures. They stepped aside and moved in to block the way, smiling in close pursuit. The goddesses made their own pattern, dancing backward with sidelong eyes. The gods danced like bees around flowers, joking and teasing, then circled right. The women danced in garland-threading movements, circling left of the divine lords. The divine youths changed steps gracefully, like makaras playing in the water-current. The apsaras moved like flying swans, turning and watching for a way to guard themselves. The gods danced in close pursuit of the heavenly women, each one grasping and each one pushing away in lively motion, increasing delight upon delight.

Then the shining goddesses danced to entice the heavenly lords, slipping away within the dance pattern. When the divine youths curved in pursuit, the heavenly women looked back in feigned anger and turned away. The gods wove in and out in confusion; the heavenly women slipped aside, drawing them on and waiting. They moved their arms, sang lamenting notes, and made graceful invented gestures, turning to draw the gods by subtle devices. Seeing the divine lords circle right to block them, moving close and reaching, the heavenly women circled left and went aside, not letting the gods come near. Gods and heavenly women were joyful because Narai had incarnated. They offered the dance to mighty Phra Suli, whose power was supreme in the earth.

Then the three chief queens, after eating the ritual heavenly rice, sweet and grand in flavor, felt it fill and soak heart and breast. They forgot all thought of ordinary food. Their happiness and delight were immense. At dawn, when the sun shone, their radiant complexions grew bright like the moon in its halo, fine and pale-gold. All three ladies conceived.

Heranthathut Attacks in the Forest

Then King Thotsarot enjoyed happiness every day with the three jeweled queens. The divine royal lord wished to go sightseeing in the beautiful forest. He invited the three chief queens: "Jewels of my eyes, let us go together into the Himawet forest, view the trees and flocks of birds, and be happy and at ease."

Then the three excellent young women heard the command, bowed at the lotus feet, and replied: "If Your Majesty will take your servants to see the trees in the great forest, your kindness surpasses the three worlds. We will have the joy of viewing them before our eyes."

Then the crown of the world, lord who subdued the world, after inviting the three ladies, went out to the shining royal hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the splendid white parasol and gave royal command to the trusted minister: "Prepare horses, chariots, elephants, and brave soldiers great and small. I will go into the forest at dawn."

Then diligent minister Sumanthan received the command of the divine-line king, bowed, and crawled out.

He levied the fourfold army, one hundred thousand brave soldiers. Elephant captains rode tusk-victorious elephants and held hooked goads. Horse captains rode noble horses, with quivers at the waist and bows and arrows in hand. Chariot captains rode fine curved chariots with dragon banners planted and waving above, holding raised bows and driving the horses in tumult. Generals chose and arranged the troops, all able to endure weapons. Some wore light graceful coats and held noisy gold-tipped weapons; some carried full sets of stone-edged weapons, bustling and showing themselves against one another.

Then the created imperial lord invited the three beautiful chief queens and went to bathe.

Jeweled showers sprinkled like rain. They wore fragrant perfume. The king put on trousers with naga designs at the hem and black cloth patterned with rice offerings. The queens wore gold-ground cloth and green-lined brocaded shoulder cloths. The king wore topaz necklaces, time-plates, directional plates, and chain ornaments. The queens wore breast ornaments, jeweled belts, and breast chains. The king wore curling body-bands, armlets, and golden bracelets. All four wore rings set in jeweled frames, diamond-bright; jeweled crowns, earrings, ear ornaments, and flowers at the ear. The lord of the world grasped the divine royal sword, beautiful like Thao Khannalaihong. The three solar-line queens followed his lotus feet as he walked.

They mounted the adorned royal chariot. He ordered the left and right warriors to move from the city gate and go along the forest road.

Beautiful was the emerald chariot, with softly curved yoke and shining form. Its wheels were all joined jewels, its tiered throne adorned. Its four faces were lovely like a jeweled heavenly palace; Garudas and lions stood in firm strength. It was harnessed to noble horses. The charioteer drove evenly, pair by pair, in shining order. Peacock parasols and golden fans waved; leading banners fluttered above. Flutes, drums, and gongs sounded together; trumpets thundered in uproar. The crowded army shouted and pressed on, hurrying troops and chariots forward.

When they reached the tall beautiful forest, where soft sand lay smooth, he halted the army in the shade of trees by a stream. He walked gracefully down from the shining jeweled chariot, beautiful like Thao Makhawan going to play in the heavenly garden.

He invited the three chief queens to walk and view the birds in the forest: mynas in kannika trees, wild fowl in wa trees by the road, sattawa birds chattering in phawa, parrots grooming their tails on kaeo branches, lonely herons on yang tops, small birds climbing liana, nuan-chan birds pecking fruit in sandalwood, orioles in khamin trees, plaos sleeping on plao branches, peacocks dancing with one another in peacock trees, rang-nan birds in great rang trees, chickens flapping and crowing in bamboo clumps, anchan birds in chingchan, benjawan birds in ordered vines, chang-thong birds in wild thong trees, and nok khla calling from khla plants. The king led the three young ladies beside him, listening to the birds' sounds.

Now the tale will speak of Heranthathut the yaksha. He lived in the Himmaphan mountains and had great power. He roamed catching humans, lions, and animals, driving and blocking them to eat as food. Fierce and arrogant, he attacked the gods and feared no one in any heaven. No one could enter the forest territory of this yaksha lord. His name made beings fear and shrink from his great power, both in heaven and underworld.

He thought he would like to look through the forest. Displaying bold power, he swung a victorious bow in one hand and flew off by asura power.

When he reached the middle of Himawan, the kumbhanda glanced left and right. He saw herds of bulls, deer, buffaloes, lions, yaks, rhinos, elephants, lion-elephants, and many other beasts. He rejoiced and pursued them by the demon lord's power.

Whatever he caught, he smashed, chewed, and ate in sport. Then he wandered through the deep forest with common arrogance in his heart.

Then he saw a human army, all holding weapons and filling the forest. "Who dares enter here? I will kill them to the end." He gnashed teeth, made his power known, shouted until the earth shook, and leaped forward, piercing into the troops and driving at them.

Then the soldiers of the vanguard glanced aside and saw the asura coming to kill and attack. Each was terrified by fear of the yaksha's mighty power. They fired their guns once each, then fled into the forest.

Then the lord of the Hari line saw the soldiers breaking and crushing into one another. The righteous king turned and saw the asura yaksha swinging his mighty bow and pressing after them. The king drew the victorious sword and went out to block the asura's path.

Then Heranthathut the yaksha, leaping and chasing the troops, reached the forest edge. He saw a human standing in the path, right hand swinging a sword, acting fierce, brave, and bold. The kumbhanda felt anger tighten in his heart. "Who is this proud and bold one, bringing women to enjoy the great forest? They are lovelier than heavenly women, their faces like moons in the clouds. Better that I kill the husband and take the wives away to share love." Having thought this, he cried out: "Hey, arrogant human. Of what solar-line race are you? What is your name, that you boast of bravery and do not fear my victorious power? You have brought your retinue and soldiers into this district of Himawet, the borderland of the yaksha. Bold as you think yourself, I will destroy your life and breath."

Then the crown of Ayutthaya heard the common asura. The lord of heaven and earth cried back: "Hey, hey, look here, yaksha lord, proud in rank and crude in speech. I am mighty in power, descendant of King Atchaban, of the famous line of the serpent-bearing lord. My name is radiant Thotsarot. I rule Ayutthaya city and am refuge for the world. I came to enjoy Himawet and did not know it was the yaksha's border. What is your name, arrogant one, that you come to fight and attack?"

Then brave Heranthathut heard and grew angry like black fire. He slapped his hand against himself and shouted: "Look, look, you human wretch, boasting fierce power and bravery. I am mighty. My name is radiant Heran. All the earth up to the mansions of Tusita fear me in all ten directions; enemies perish and their hands tremble. You are like a child of a deer, trying to meet a lion's power. These three women like divine kinnaris will not escape the asura's hand. All your troops and army I will catch and eat as food." Having spoken, he recited a mighty spell and created a demon body.

He became two asuras, their bodies huge, black, and thick. Their two eyes were red like age-ending fire. They gnashed long curved white tusks. The created form held a mace, while the asura held bow and arrow. The powerful created form attacked in force.

Then the radiant solar-line lord of Narai's house received, warded, and fought the asura, turning and shifting back and forth. The king raised the sword; the kumbhanda lunged and seized his hand. Finding the moment, the demon struck with the mace, and the king beat back the attacking arm.

Then brave Heranthathut stamped his feet, leaped, and chased the three young queens by power.

He reached wrongly for Nang Kausuriya, then turned and snatched at Nang Kaiyakesi. Failing to seize her, he rushed in confusion after Nang Samut Thewi.

Then the three bright chief queens ran from the asura, scattering as if their lives would end. Pale-faced, they screamed in distress: "Lord, help your beloved wives. By the merit of the princes in our wombs, the asura cannot overtake us."

Then radiant Thao Thotsarot heard as if struck by a thunderbolt. The king grew angry like fire. He struck with the mighty sword, but it hit only the created form and did not reach the real one. The lord of the three worlds turned back to the three ladies.

He spoke sweet words: "Beloved ones, do not fear the yaksha. Even if a hundred thousand crores more like him came, I would kill them and end their lives." Speaking, he swung the jeweled sword, its light flashing in bright sparks, and sprang in to seize the demon lord, fighting and turning back and forth.

Then Heranthathut the yaksha and his magic created form joined together to attack. They struck left and swept right in tumult, stubborn and enduring without retreat. Three brave, fierce fighters met one another, and none gave way.

Then created Thotsarot turned and grappled the two kumbhandas. He planted one foot on Heranthathut's shoulder and his left foot on the knee of the magic demon. His right hand bent back the yaksha's head. They shifted and whirled, now striking, now beating in confusion. Weapons flashed like age-ending fire, and the sound shook the earth. He struck Heran and sent him flying away; the created form disappeared by power.

Then Heranthathut the yaksha was racked with pain through his whole body. The asura gnashed his teeth. He drew the siddhi arrow and laid it on the string, intending to kill. He shot it by the kumbhanda's power, and the sound thundered through sky and earth.

The arrow became burning coals, bright and blazing. They fell thickly over the ground, hot and fierce like the fire at the end of an age.

Then radiant King Thotsarot saw Heran's arrow turn to smoke and flame. He swung the divine sword, whose power could subdue even heaven, and hurled it with bold force. Its sound was like thunder roaring in battle.

The sword destroyed the asura's arrow and extinguished the fierce flames with a torrent of rain. Then it killed Heran, ending his life, like a jeweled general going to war.

Then divine youths and heavenly women of every group, tree-deities of the forest, gods of mountains, and gandharvas in every divine place and golden mansion throughout Himawat and heaven saw the asura Heran lose his life and breath. In noisy joy they leaned from their windows, clapped their hands, scattered divine flowers and garlands, and gave acclamation and blessing: "May you bear heroic power and subdue the age. May your happiness increase in joy. With the three chief royal ladies, may your fame spread through the whole earth."

Then the brave soldiers learned that the asura had died and ran out of the forest.

They saw Heran dead, his body huge as a beautiful mountain. They raised joined hands and praised the king's power, making loud tumult.

Then the solar-line divine lord, having killed the asura, invited the three lovely queens to mount the jeweled chariot. Beautiful like created Hatsanai riding great Vejayanta, he ordered the troops to move into the city.

They reached the palace and halted at the jeweled landing. He led the chief queens down from the jeweled chariot and walked up to the adorned palace.

The Four Princes Are Born

Then the three beloved chief queens, from the time they bore the royal sons, were tended and cared for by the royal line as if they were jeweled queens beside a universal monarch. They had glory, wealth, and royal estate; no sickness, stain, or trouble touched them. They were happy and delighted every night and day. When the full ten months were complete and the royal sons were about to be born, the birth-wind stirred the wombs and pain filled the ladies' bodies.

Then the beautiful palace women, elder palace ladies, and eunuchs filled the inner palace with bustle and noise. Some pressed the belly and supported the womb, helping to turn and correct the births. Some ran in confusion to find physicians; the palace women lost their wits.

Then radiant Thao Hatsanai was seated on the divine jeweled throne in the Vejayanta palace, surrounded by heavenly women dancing and playing heavenly music. His heart grew hot like age-ending fire. The thousand-eyed lord looked with the divine eye and knew that the three lovely queens were about to bear their beloved sons. He invited beloved Nang Suchada and the heavenly ladies and flew away.

When he arrived, he walked with the apsaras, great and small, and beloved Nang Suchada into the shining royal hall.

Then the radiant imperial lord saw Lord Hatsanai bringing heavenly women down. The king rejoiced, raised joined hands above his head, and invited Lord Amarin to ascend the bright great palace.

Then Hatsanai, lord of Tavatimsa heaven, sat on a golden-jeweled throne and gave divine command: "King who holds the ten royal virtues, do not burn in grief. I will help the three young women so that no stain or harm touches them." Having spoken, he gave divine fair words to the four apsara queens: "Go help the three queens in the place where the princes will be born."

Then the four excellent young women raised joined hands to receive the divine command and went with their attendants.

When they reached the jeweled sleeping chamber, lovely heavenly maiden Suchada and the group of beautiful apsaras entered to turn the womb of Nang Kausuriya. For young-faced Kaiyakesi, lovely Suchitra guarded and helped her. Sudharma and Sunantha came to help Nang Samut Thewi.

At the silent middle watch of the night, the bright moon shone in a halo, free of clouds and stain. Divine powers assembled at the ascendant. The planets stood together in Aries, excellent in power like the horoscope of a universal king. It was a great and splendid auspicious hour. The chief wife named Nang Kausuriya gave birth to the created discus-lord. His radiance was green and shining, like sapphire gem.

When sunrise grew clear and bright, lovely Nang Kaiyakesi gave birth to an auspicious royal son whose radiance was like flashing ruby.

At three nalika and five baht, young royal Nang Samut gave birth to a shining royal son whose body was yellow like applied gold.

When a little past four mong had gone by, the chief queen again gave birth to a son, shining soft purple, all his marks and body lovely and complete.

Then radiant Thao Hatsanai saw the four beautiful sons of King Thotsarot, their faces lovely and auspicious. He blew the great victorious war-conch, and the sound thundered like sky through the kingdom. All the lovely women in every music office joined in royal performance: strings, piphat, and instruments played. In front, the gongs rang three times, and trumpets made a great tumult.

Then beloved Nang Suchada and the three other goddess-apsaras together held golden divine trays lined with shining fine cloth. They received the divine-line princes, the three younger sons in order after the eldest, invited them to bathe in jeweled pools with divine flower-water, and when bathing was complete laid them to rest on adorned jeweled trays.

Then the lord of golden Mount Meru and all the divine attendants happily gave blessings: "May no sickness or danger afflict you. May you hold power through arts and arrows. If hostile enemies think to attack, let none in the whole earth be able to oppose you." When this was finished, he walked from the shining golden seat and flew back with divine youths and women to the heavenly palaces.

Then King Thotsarot saw the four royal sons, their faces and marks lovely and bright. His heart was clear and full of joy as if he had gained heavenly treasure. His love and affection bound him to them as to his own life. He ordered nurses and milk-mothers chosen, excellent in form and splendor: royal elder women of noble lineage and wisdom.

Then the palace ladies of rank bowed their heads to receive the royal command and crawled out from the royal hall.

They chose nursing women to soothe and raise the princes, beautiful as heavenly maidens, all daughters of solar-line royal families. Their bodies lacked the six faults: too tall, too short, black, white, fat, or thin. They chose women of complete signs and sweet milk, sixty-four lovely women in all, with nurses and attendants beautiful to see. They also assigned high-born elder women to attend the eldest serpent-bearing lord and the three younger princes according to the king's command.

Then radiant Thao Thotsarot, when three nights were complete, ordered Sumanthan the minister: "I will celebrate the princes. Arrange the auspicious rites to steady their spirits, and go invite the four holy men to come in."

Then Sumanthan, minister of rank, received the command of the divine-line king, bowed farewell, and went out.

He had the great palace arranged according to the royal manual for the grand rite. Carpets were laid; bright screens were set; two grand curtains were tied. Naga-gold and shining silver rice-offering vessels were arranged, with golden trays holding jeweled mirrors, fragrant perfume, and bright victory candles. At the center stood a jeweled throne, with a splendid white parasol planted above it. Garlands hung from the ceiling, and jeweled lamp-forms adorned the place.

Then he ordered the sangkhakari officials to go out to the forest of Himalaya and invite the four teachers and their attendants to come in.

Then the sangkhakari of rank heard, bowed with raised hands, took leave, and hurried to the forest.

When they arrived, they bowed in reverence to the four great teachers and reported: "The three chief queens have now given birth to royal sons. The king has ordered your servants to come invite the ascetics and the bands of holy men, so that you arrive at the appointed time."

Then the teachers, strong in meditation, heard and rejoiced as if they had received heavenly water. They informed one another in order, put on the garments proper to rishis, left their huts, and came to Ayutthaya.

When they arrived, they ascended to the palace, bright in the sky, and sat in order on glittering jeweled seats.

Then King Thotsarot saw that the siddhas had all come. The righteous king bowed to them, worshipped with incense, candles, flowers, and fragrant perfume, and spoke sweetly, telling them that his intention had been fulfilled: "Now I have sons through the commanding word of Phra Isaro and through the holy men's rite." Having spoken, he ordered the four princes brought out to raise joined hands before the wise great rishis.

Then the palace ladies of rank received the command, bowed farewell, and came to the bright jeweled chamber.

They invited the eldest serpent-bearing lord and his three created younger brothers. Solar-line nurses and palace attendants followed.

When they arrived, they placed the princes on the divine shining seat beneath the adorned white parasol, beautiful like the moon in clouds.

Then the four teachers, strong in meditation, examined and looked at the princes. The faces and signs of all four were beautiful. Each teacher rejoiced as if divine water had bathed him. "This time the yaksha line will end through the serpent-bearing four-armed lord. The three worlds and the whole world will rely on the bow-bearing lord's power, like a jeweled parasol in the sky shading them from the heat of dawn."

Then the old chief priest, when the auspicious time arrived, lit the victory candle and set it in the shining jeweled mirror.

Round went the candles, passed from left to right. The old astrologer struck the gong three times, and trumpets and music sounded. Song and recitation joined together; instruments rang in tumult. Royal teachers, priests, ministers, and the splendid solar line all took part. When seven rounds, correct according to the royal manual, were complete, the victory candles were extinguished to complete the spirit-rite. The ascetic-father raised joined hands and waved incense smoke over the divine-line princes, anointed the foreheads of the four chief royal sons with powder, and chanted Brahma's Veda, offering auspicious blessings.

Then the four ascetics gave names according to Phra Suli's science, by auspicious age and prophecy. The eldest, who was Narai the divine lord, was named Phra Rames, bearer of the bow. The second, who was the mighty discus, was named Prince Phrot. The third, who was the throne and conch, was named Phra Lak, younger brother of the solar line. The mace-weapon, last in order, was named Prince Satrut. Then they gave blessing: "May you be radiant in great power and bravery. Let enemies and foolish hostile bands throughout the whole universe be unable to withstand your hands."
