Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the fifteenth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut's journey to Kaiyaket, Thotsakan's sending of Kakana against the rishis, Phra Ram and Phra Lak's defeat of Kakana and Sahu, Maricha's flight to Lanka, and Phra Chanok's recovery and naming of Sida before returning to Mithila.

Translation

Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut Go to Kaiyaket

Then the royal father heard his son's lament. He received the prince's spirit and answered: "You who are my eyes and my life, what you say is not fitting. The gods and asuras invited you from Vaikuntha to help subdue this age. Will you suffer over parting from your kin? Let your younger brother Phra Satrut, jewel of my eyes, go with you. Phra Lak of the solar line and Phra Ram will guard the moon-bright palace, serving as their father's ears and eyes."

Then Phra Phrot, lord of the solar line, and Phra Satrut his younger brother heard the royal words and were helpless. It was like writing with diamond iron on a golden tablet: they could not oppose the command. Raising joined hands, they answered, "Your sons will not trouble the lord of earth." Having spoken, they bowed at the lotus feet and took leave of their radiant royal father, the three royal mothers, and Phra Rama, lord and elder brother. Phra Satrut took leave of Phra Lak. Each loved the other and was overcome with grief. Each dried their tears, unable to bear parting.

When their grief eased a little, Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut walked gracefully away and came to the shining golden palace.

They ordered the four nurses and attendants on left and right, people of wisdom and good sense, to prepare horses, chariots, and elephants, because they would depart for Kaiyaket city.

Then the four attendants bowed their heads, received the command with joy, offered reverence, and went out.

They arranged the procession front and rear according to rank. Horse soldiers flanked left and right, holding firearms by their slings, wearing sky-blue coats and black caps. Next came men in green-blue coats, red caps, and swords with inlaid hilts. Next came men in crimson coats, wearing golden-flower caps and carrying golden lances. Next came men in mist-colored coats and green caps, holding spears in ordered rows. They prepared the princes' chariots and the attendant chariots, and every company waited for the royal departure.

Then the two lords of the solar line, as the sun's light began to clear at dawn, came to bathe in the water.

They entered the bathing place and washed, then put on divine flower-scented water. Each wore trousers with curved borders and fig-colored cloth around the waist. Their side panels were sun-bright with curling stems; their front panels were emerald work set off with rubies. Their upper garments were different rich brocades. They wore vine-like chains, directional plates, and breast ornaments; gold armlets shaped with dragon designs; diamond rings shining brightly; jeweled crowns with flower sprays; earrings and ear ornaments hanging in loops. They girded on mighty swords, placed bows and arrows over their shoulders, beautiful as sun and moon, and mounted the shining golden chariots with graceful arms.

The chariots were chariots of nine gems, their light flashing in the sun. The soft yokes bent gracefully, and the banners at their tips fluttered. Curved side-guards were inlaid with jewels and gleamed with seven-headed nagas. Thrones of diamond-bright gems were set within them, harnessed to horses beyond any painted likeness. The charioteers drove and leapt them forward. Banners streamed and snapped at their edges; high regalia stood in jeweled lines; soldiers crowded in close ranks. Flutes, drums, and gongs answered one another, their sound like the earth shaking. The great army hurried into the forest track.

[Viewing the Forest]

They traveled through the passes of splendid mountains and crossed streams and mountain waters. Seeing the male and female wild animals, Phra Phrot pointed them out to his younger brother: antelope and sandy deer, bull elephants leading their herds out from the forest, little calves close beside their mothers, some pulling grass and breaking thickets. Red cattle raced before lone buffalo; gaurs roamed, goring the earth and eating mineral salt. As they went they viewed the birds and trees in the forest: swans longing for their mates, nori birds gathering on high hills, peacocks leading their flocks and spreading their tails, mynas talking by the road, nok-klang moving along the trees, great lora birds playing in groups, and turtle-doves paired and cooing together. Viewing all this, they pressed the army onward, and after fifteen days they reached the city.

Then all the townspeople, men and women, learned that the royal grandsons had arrived at the capital. Everyone's heart was joyful. They told one another in noisy excitement: merchants, traders, householders, Chinese, Cham, brahmans, ascetics, and the whole victorious city. Some carried children or led grandchildren and ran through the great streets. Old people went with staffs; those who could not walk dragged themselves along.

They crowded and pressed in confusion along the streets left and right. They saw the two royal princes riding in adorned jeweled chariots, with beautiful human features and shining complexions, lovely as sun and moon moving across the sky. Some scattered flower garlands over the great streets. They cried blessing and praise until the whole city rang.

Then the two radiant princes stopped their chariots at the jeweled landing and went up to attend their royal grandfather.

Each bowed his head in reverence at the paired feet, left and right, amid ministers and officials in the shining great palace.

Then King Kaiyaket, seeing the two beautiful grandsons with their brilliant complexions, gazed on Phra Satrut, whose face was like the bright moon. Love grew in the king's royal heart. He embraced him and spoke: "Your royal father, crown of Ayutthaya, enjoys vast wealth and rules the sky. Is he still firm and well?"

Then Phra Phrot of the solar line, bearer of the bow, heard the gracious words. He raised joined hands and answered: "Our royal father has no suffering, grief, or sickness. When he learned the letter of the lord of the three worlds, the king rejoiced. He graciously sent both beloved grandsons to serve beneath the feet of Your Majesty, our royal grandfather, until life ends."

Then King Kaiyaket heard his royal grandson and felt as if heavenly nectar had cured his heart. The sound and flavor of the words had no equal. The prince's wisdom was quick, fluent, and swift, fitting the divine solar line. He kissed the faces of both young princes: "Joys of my eyes, beloved children, your grandfather has no line of descendants to protect and rule the borderlands. My sons, wield power and become refuge for kin, ministers, citizens, and troops, so that they may live in happiness hereafter." Having spoken, he bestowed countless palace women and attendants great and small, shining jeweled palaces, troops, and servants in full.

Then Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut bowed their heads in reverence and went together to the jeweled palace.

The two blessed princes enjoyed supreme happiness and royal wealth, living with their royal grandfather in great victorious Kaiyaket. Morning and evening they attended him constantly. They took care over affairs of state, acting as the lord of earth's eyes and hands, with steady devotion. They supported ministers, elder officials, and citizens; the people lived in happy fellowship. Danger was gone forever, and the city rejoiced in peace.

Kakana Harasses the Rishis

[Slow]

Then Thotsakan the yaksha, lord over subjects and people and crown of Lanka, grew swollen and exultant in power. With wicked and envious heart he thought: "Now holy ascetics with knowledge all know the fire-pit rite. They can fly through the sky and consecrate bow-power. In time they will have disciples of great might, and these will become enemies. No matter. I will have them destroyed and endanger the vows and rites of the rishis, ruining the work of ascetic knowledge they have labored over."

Having thought this, he turned his face and commanded bold-hearted Nang Kakana: "Take your attendants and go wandering to harry the holy sages. Ruin the ritual work and the growth of vows at every rishi hermitage. For seven days, all together, swoop and strike so that they have no lasting peace."

Then Nang Kakana, brave in war, received the command of the twenty-armed king and went out from the royal hall.

She called the bands of her female attendants, strong, fierce, and bold in power, spreading across the yaksha lineage. All together they transformed themselves into crows.

When the transformation was complete, they flew up into the sky. Their wings roared in tumult as if the air would break apart.

They reached the hermitages of the ascetics. Flying and crying in disorder, they aimed and swooped down. They clawed and tore at the hermitage roofs, breaking them down as if struck by a strong wind. They chased, pecked, and struck the holy sages, snatching at their matted hair in confusion.

Then the rishis and yogins, great and small, saw bold-hearted Kakana swooping, chasing, pecking, and striking in disorder. Each was frightened and trembling in the chest. They ran into one another in confusion, scattering and fleeing everywhere, bewildered and out of their senses.

Then fierce Nang Kakana the yakshini saw the bands of yogins flee from their leaf huts. She and her followers cried out in a thunderous clamor through the whole forest. Then they flew up into the clouds and returned to victorious Lanka.

Then the holy sages, great and small, when they saw the flock of crows go back, came out from the forest thickets. They met and consulted together: "If we keep our vows and discipline here, the yakshini Kakana and her flock will surely come to trample us constantly. We must report this danger to the noble one named Phra Wasis and to the great Phra Sawamit." Having thought this, they hurried away together.

When they reached the two teachers, they raised joined hands above their heads and worshiped. They said: "There are asura crows tearing at the halls in confusion. For seven days they have brought disorder. We cannot endure or restrain them. Teachers, please help end this danger, so that the asuras do not come to harm us."

Then the rishis Phra Wasis and Phra Sawamit heard the band of yogins and wondered in their hearts. "What has happened that Kakana can come to trample us like this? Before now there was no danger in this forest region. It must be that asuras and demons, blinded by delusion, have come to harry us. The age of their lineage's ending has arrived. We will hurry into glorious Ayutthaya, find King Thotsarot, brave in war, and ask for mighty Phra Ram to come bearing the bow and slay the asuras." Having said this, Phra Wasis and the rishi Phra Sawamit led the company of yogins to Ayutthaya.

When they reached the royal dwelling, the two powerful meditating teachers and the bands of holy sages went together into the royal hall.

Then King Thotsarot saw them and invited the holy men to sit on bright golden seats. Bowing his fingers in reverence, the lord of earth asked the rishis: "What do you seek, bringing this band of yogins here?"

Then the two great teachers each gave blessing and said: "Now there is danger from violent beings. Flocks of demon crows are harrying ascetics in the forest. We cannot chant or meditate, and so we have come here. We ask for Phra Ram and Phra Lak to go destroy the powerful yakshini asuras, end the affliction, and cool the yogins. Lord of earth, please show mercy."

Then King Thotsarot heard the great holy men and answered: "These two princes are very young. It seems they cannot subdue yakshas. I myself will go out to fight and kill them until their lives are ended."

Then the rishis Phra Wasis and Phra Sawamit heard and replied: "How can Your Majesty say this? Phra Narai has incarnated to destroy the yakshas. It would be wrong for Your powerful Majesty to go out and kill them. Phra Lak and Phra Rames bear power that shakes the earth. Even at this age they have mighty strength like a heap of age-ending fire."

Then King Thotsarot heard and saw that it accorded with the ancient order. The righteous king spoke: "If Your Reverences will take the two grandsons out to slay the yakshas, then this follows the matter for which they came from Vaikuntha. Let it rest with the great sages." Then he ordered the two young princes: "Go destroy the asuras in the ascetics' hermitage. With the power of your excellent arrows, end all their lives, so that the holy sages of rank may prosper in vows and meditation."

Then the two lords of the solar line heard the royal command, bowed at his feet, and answered: "That Your Majesty sends us to subdue the yakshini, coarse and evil as they are, matches what your sons have long had in mind. We rejoice beyond measure."

Then radiant King Thotsarot and the three royal mothers heard the beloved sons' words. They received the spirits of the two solar princes, each taking them in their laps, raising hands to stroke their backs and kiss their faces. "My sons go to subdue the asuras. May you gain victory over all enemies through your brave siddhi arrows. May your glory appear in the world. Jewels of our eyes, go in lasting welfare."

Then the two princes, brave in war, raised joined hands to receive the blessing of father and mothers. They bowed at the jeweled feet and took leave of the four royal elders. Each grasped the mighty siddhi arrows, beautiful and more splendid than the three worlds.

Then the two ascetics of strong vows, together with the band of holy sages, had their wish fulfilled and rejoiced. They took leave of the mighty king and led the two young princes down from the jeweled palace toward the huts of the holy men.

Phra Ram and Phra Lak Kill Kakana

Then Nang Kakana, deluded in mind, when the appointed seven days were complete, called the others and transformed again.

They changed into brave crows and led all their attendants, flying up into the shining sky and aiming for the holy sages' hall.

Then the band of great rishis, who had long feared the asuras' power, heard the loud sound and were frightened. Each trembled, spirit gone, unable to stay in place. Some pulled and dragged one another in confusion; some fled into the forest.

Then the two shining princes of the solar line saw the band of holy sages running about in noisy disorder. Each seized his royal bow, bold and fierce as brave Kala, swung it and displayed power, and came out from the hall at once.

They saw the flock of demon crows come chasing and attacking the rishis. Their brows and eyes showed them as asuras. Phra Chakri set an arrow and released it.

The sound thundered through the sky. It struck the troops, killing countless numbers in ruin. Phra Lak shot again, and it became a flame, pursuing and destroying the crow troops to the end.

Then Nang Kakana, fierce yaksha, glanced and saw the two princes killing her crow troops and ending their lives. Furious, red-eyed with rage, she spread her wings to cover the blazing sun and screamed until Himaphan thundered: "Hey, you two princes, small as insects. Why have you come to fight? What are your names, and what place do you hold in the solar line, that you act proud and arrogant and do not fear the yakshini's power?"

Then the radiant solar-line lord, Phra Narai, heard and answered: "I am named Rama. My younger brother is Lord Lak, mighty, holy, and brave. Our powerful royal father rules Ayutthaya city. You faithless and evil one have come to destroy the rishis' vows and rites. Therefore I will end your life and bring your breath to an end."

Then bold-hearted Nang Kakana heard and grew angry like black fire. Her scream shook the whole forest: "Hey, arrogant little children. I will destroy your lives and bring you to death." Speaking, she surged forward to fight, swooping and striking in a whirling tumult.

Then the two blessed and radiant princes each swung the mighty siddhi bow, chasing, striking, and beating the asura.

When it struck her wing, she dodged and circled away. Then the lord of the Bhuchaphong line set the bow, drew, and released. It struck her breast, and she fell to the ground, dying and becoming a yakshini again.

Then the great ascetics, small and large, saw Kakana dead, fallen onto the earth by the arrows of Phra Lak and Phra Chakri. They rejoiced, clapped their hands loudly, gave blessings to the princes, and led the grandsons back into the hut.

Then the surviving troops of the yakshini crow-demons, those whose lives were not ended, hid and fled in twisting paths. Bodies cut and wounded, blood flowing, they slipped away and flew through the sky. Nearly dead, each hurried across to Lanka.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet and reported to the yaksha Sahu and to the asura Maricha: "Your royal mother went to strike the hermitages of holy sages dwelling in the great forest. She met two victorious princes, of what solar-line family we do not know. They had no army or troops; both held bows and arrows in their hands. They were brave and powerful, fierce as serpent poison, and were staying in the hermitage of the holy men. With ability and boldness they killed the demon Kakana. Your royal mother, too, has lost her life through their power."

Then Sahu and Maricha the yakshas learned from the crow-demons that their royal mother had died. The two yakshas raged in fury, gnashed their teeth, and stamped their feet in turmoil. They roared like lions in a great clamor: "Hey, two arrogant humans. Whose children and lineage are you, that you dare act so boldly and violently? You do not fear the solar line of demons. We will burn you into age-ending ash and dust." Speaking, they seized their maces, swung them in disorder like turning wheels, and called for chariots and yaksha troops until the world thundered.

Then the bands of powerful yakshas heard the asuras' voices. Each seized weapons and maces: swords, shields, bucklers, firearms, pole-axes, lances, crossbows, bows and arrows, slings, throwing spears, javelins, elephants, horses, and chariots in full. They swung their weapons in tumult; earth and sky trembled. The demon troops bared teeth and gnashed them, hurrying to wait upon the asuras.

Then Sahu and Maricha the yakshas leapt from their bright jeweled seats and mounted jeweled chariots adorned in splendor.

The two chariots were diamond chariots, their light flashing into the sky. Four thousand horses were yoked to them, and the clouds darkened like demon armies. Flocks of crows formed war companies and shouted in pairs, noisy and fierce. The world thundered to the edge of the universe, and the earth shook as if in disaster. Many bands of demons worked magic; every direction darkened under murky rain. They swung bucklers and swords in confusion, coming to fight and intending to meet the foe. Mountains and seas thundered; the world trembled in every sphere. Horsemen and demon troops hurried, and the royal chariots rolled through the air.

When they reached the hermitage of the holy sages, the two powerful, brave yakshas saw the body of their royal mother and the dead crow-demon troops. Tears filled their eyes, their bodies shook, and they stamped their feet until all trembled. They called urgently for the great army to surround the hermitage of the holy sages.

Then the band of great rishis saw the asura troops and were frightened, noisy, and confused. They ran in and clung to the two mighty princes, the holy men trembling and spiritless: "Help us. Do not let us die." Some crawled and scrambled through the hall.

Then the two brave princes smiled and spoke: "Teachers, do not fear the kumbhandas. Even if hundreds of crores filled the whole universe, your beloved grandsons would kill them all." Having spoken, they moved gracefully out of the leaf hut.

Then Maricha and Sahu the yakshas saw the two princes come out and ordered the warriors to attack.

Then the bands of powerful yakshas received the asura kings' command and displayed strange powers. They swung spears, pole-axes, lances, and clubs, leaping and shouting in thunderous noise, gnashing teeth and driving one another on as they entered battle.

Then Phra Chakri, wise and brave, and his victorious younger brother saw the demon bands invading. The two princes swung their royal bows, displaying bold power, and chased the asura troops with swift strength.

Then the demon troops, small and great, aimed to kill and destroy them. They rushed together in tumult.

They shot, thrust, stabbed, and slashed in disorder, hurling weapons like rain. Some demons gnashed their teeth and roared, entering combat without thought for life.

Then the two brave princes each swung a mighty siddhi bow and chased after the kumbhandas, killing them.

They struck left and swept right in confusion, swift as a turning discus. The demon troops died in heaps, one on another, by their warring power.

Then Sahu and Maricha the yakshas saw the asura troops lose all life and breath. Each swung a weapon and displayed fierce power and strength, ordering Lothan, the demon charioteer, to drive the chariots forward.

The axle-roar thundered and shook; earth and sky trembled. Sahu came against the mighty four-armed lord, while Maricha entered battle with Phra Lak, bearer of the bow. They swung and raised their maces, intending to cut down the mighty princes.

Then Phra Harirak, discus-bearing Krishna, and his younger brother, dear as life, each drew a siddhi arrow and released it.

The sound was like the wind at the end of an age; the world shook and trembled. The arrows of the two victorious princes struck the two asura chariots.

The four thousand horses were destroyed; the charioteers' heads were cut off; the chariot bodies were crushed into dust by the greatness of that power.

Then Sahu and Maricha the yakshas, their chariots and troops destroyed, became angry as age-ending fire. Each made a lion-roar and stamped his feet with a sound like the sky splitting. They shouted fiercely, gnashing teeth, and the kumbhandas leapt into hand-to-hand combat.

Sahu attacked and grappled with the Hari-line lord bearing the bow. Maricha fought in power against the four-armed lord's mighty younger brother.

Then Phra Ram, lord of the solar line, and his beautiful younger brother both sprang in and seized the kumbhandas.

Each prince climbed and planted a foot on a yaksha's shoulder. They whirled and turned like spinning wheels. Four brave, strong fighters did not give way; each struck, each slashed, and each met the other in combat.

Then Sahu and Maricha the yakshas surged and pressed, struggling close, each taking turns to strike and kill. Sahu struck with a mace, and the Bhuchaphong lord parried with the bow. Maricha swept with a mace, and Phra Lak parried the demon lord's arm.

Then Phra Chakri, wise and brave, and his victorious younger brother pushed on in close combat. Phra Narai struck with the bow he carried, hitting Sahu the yaksha. Phra Lak struck Maricha the asura, and both flew back from the place at once.

The four-armed lord grasped an arrow, laid it on the string, stepped aside, glanced, shifted, and released. It struck Sahu the kumbhanda, and by its power his life ended.

Then Maricha the yaksha, seeing Sahu dead and seeing Phra Rama as the four-armed lord, was terrified, his hair standing on end. He understood that this was Narai bearing the bow. Too afraid to think of fighting, he fled to Lanka city.

Then gods of every direction, together with beautiful apsaras, learned that the Avatara had come to destroy the asuras and end their lives. They cried "Sadhu" in praise and clapped their hands in a loud roar. They scattered flower garlands through every golden mansion, great and small. Some cried blessings, and the gods rejoiced in delight.

Then the band of great rishis saw the yakshas dead and ruined through the power of the two princes, and saw the gods scattering divine garlands everywhere with sweet fragrance. Each praised the perfections: "It is fitting that he incarnated to subdue the yakshas. From now on suffering will end, and happiness will arise throughout the three worlds through the power of Phra Harirak and Phra Lak, his younger brother." Having spoken, they gave blessings: "May their battle-power subdue every direction. May all enemy kings be defeated by their might throughout the earth."

Phra Chanok Recovers Sida from the Earth

Then Phra Chanok the rishi, after finding a daughter in the water and burying her by a vow of merit, had returned to the work of his rites, hoping to complete his power. But no meditation or attainment arose for him. Wearied, he relaxed his effort to learn the rishi's practice and wished to leave ascetic vows and return to Mithila city. Thinking of his beautiful daughter buried beneath the branches of the banyan, he was startled and called Nai Som. They hurried out together.

They reached the area beneath the great banyan, the nyagrodha tree. He ordered Nai Som, trusted companion of his heart, to dig for the royal daughter.

Then Nai Som, the rishi's lay attendant, took a hoe and dug the earth according to the place he had marked.

He scraped and dug for a long time, but he could not find the daughter. He sat down, threw away the hoe, wept, and told the holy master.

Then the rishi who kept discipline was startled through his whole body, as if his life would end. Tears filled and flooded his eyes. Grief pressed and blocked his heart. He turned the matter over in thought. Then he said to Nai Som: "Layman, listen to me first. Do not weep. The royal daughter, heart of my heart, surpasses all women in the earth. On the day I buried her I made a vow, and a lotus rose to receive the beautiful lady. By her merit and perfections, do not suspect that her life has ended. The gods in the forest have come to protect and guard her. Go tell the ministers to come and plow in search of the young lady."

Then Nai Som, wise and brave, bowed his head to receive the teacher's word and hurried in alarm into the victorious city.

When he reached the royal palace, he reported the event to the great ministers, telling everything from beginning to end according to the holy master's command.

Then the chief ministers on left and right heard Nai Som and rejoiced. They quickly inspected and levied men.

They prepared jeweled chariots, horses, diligent elephants, and plows yoked to oxen and buffalo in full, choosing only excellent animals.

When this was done, they had Nai Som, the lay attendant under the rishi's command, lead the bands of soldiers straight to the hall.

When they arrived, they halted the warriors by the stream at the forest edge. Nai Som and the ministers went in and bowed to the holy ascetic.

Then Phra Chanok the ascetic saw the troops, horses, and chariots assembled, and spoke: "I found a royal daughter and buried her beneath the great banyan. Help plow and search for the lady. When I have found her, I will return to the city."

Then the four great ministers bowed their heads to receive the command with joy, raised joined hands, and hurried out.

They yoked pairs of oxen and buffalo, filling the forest in thick ranks. They plowed according to the holy master's command, circling around the banyan's shade.

Then Phra Chanok, the great rishi, when he did not find his royal daughter, suffered as if life would end. Tears flowed and filled his eyes. He doubted the place he had marked. "Ah, what shall I do to regain my little child? Or have powerful gods and asuras perhaps hidden her?" Having thought this, he made a truth-vow: "By the merit of my beloved child, if she is to continue the solar royal line, dwell with the one excellent emperor, be the crown of women in beauty and become refuge and shelter for the people, then may the noble lord of bulls, excellent among cattle and horses, lead me to find the royal daughter." Having spoken, the holy sage plowed.

He found the divine lotus, bright, with fresh shining petals and stem, sending out a sweet fragrance that gladdened the heart. He saw the golden jeweled casket shining within the chamber of pollen, delicate as a divine mandara flower catching the sun's bright light. He opened it and saw the royal daughter, lovelier than a heavenly woman. She had the beautiful features of a human lady. He received her spirit and lifted the lady from the golden casket. Her form was like a maiden in her full beauty: though she had first been conceived as an infant girl, now to the eye she had grown to sixteen years.

Then all the ministers and soldiers gazed at the royal daughter in wonder. It was a great marvel. The more they looked, the more their eyes delighted; the young lady was lovelier than a heavenly woman. They raised joined hands and blessed her all together, their sound thundering through the forest.

When he reached the forest dwelling, his heart filled with joy. He spoke graciously to the beautiful royal daughter: "Your father had no royal heir of the solar line to sustain royal power over the earth. So I came to practice asceticism here in the forest mountains. Through exceedingly great merit I have obtained my beloved child, splendid and excellent, and now my wish is fulfilled: one who will continue the solar line of kings. I will bestow a name on you, beloved heart beyond all measure. Be named Nang Sida. May danger and sickness never touch you."

Then young Nang Sida, beloved and pitiful, heard her father's command. The young lady bowed down at his feet: "The kindness of my royal father, who has protected my head and raised me up, cannot be weighed against earth and sky or the great river and ocean. Even if all three worlds were brought for comparison, they would not equal it. Your child asks to serve beneath your feet until the day life ends."

Then the minister in charge of royal affairs raised joined hands above his head and immediately addressed the holy sage: "Since Your Majesty renounced the city and took the form of a rishi, you have left us to guard it for many years, and no danger or harm has occurred. Now that you have gained a royal daughter, please leave the Brahma-vihara vow and return to the vast city to rejoice under the victorious white parasol. Your royal kin of the solar line will be freed from grief and tears, and subjects and people will rejoice. Your Majesty, please show mercy."

Then Phra Chanok, the great rishi, heard it as if divine water had bathed his body. He removed the bark garment and tiger-skin sash from his shoulder, left the ascetic rite and discipline, and dressed in adorned royal clothing.

When this was finished, he mounted the golden chariot with his beloved royal daughter and ordered the fourfold army to break camp and hurry out from the mountain hermitage.

They traveled through fields, open forest, across water, streams, and mountains. The sound of chariots and many warriors thundered through the woods. Chinese horsemen rode flanking guard with bows in hand, driving and racing greatly. The charioteers urged the victorious chariots straight toward Mithila city.

Then all the townspeople, men and women, wealthy people, ascetics, brahmans, and elders, learned that the lord of earth had obtained a daughter in a golden lotus, graceful and lovelier than an apsara, and had left ascetic vows to return to the city. They told one another in a great noise. They saw him riding in a chariot of the gods, surrounded by warriors, with the royal daughter seated at the front of the victorious chariot, beautiful as the moon in the sky. Each looked with delight and did not turn their eyes away. All rejoiced together, scattered flowers, and offered blessings throughout the city.

The queen embraced her, received her spirit, and spoke graciously: "Beloved one, highest delight of my heart, your mother loves you as dearly as her own life. We had no royal son or daughter. You will continue the solar royal line, carry forward imperial honor, and become the splendor of Mithila city. Jewel of my eyes, your mother rejoices greatly." Then she bestowed royal dress and ornaments suited to the lady who would be companion of the emperor, and had her live in the jeweled palace of Brahma's face, cherished as dearly as life.
