Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the sixteenth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Janaka's establishment of the Moli bow rite for Sida, Phra Ram and Sida seeing one another, the gathered kings failing to move Shiva's bow, Phra Ram lifting and drawing it, Janaka's invitation to Thotsarot, and Thotsarot's procession to Mithila for the wedding.

Translation

Janaka Sets the Bow Rite

Then King Chanok, lord and emperor, ruled heavenly royal power as a great and excellent support. He was surrounded by palace women, attendants, ministers, and warriors great and small. Subjects, people, and citizens were happy at heart; no enemy or danger troubled them. He considered within his spirit: "My beautiful royal daughter has reached the age of sixteen. It is fitting that she should have a beloved companion. I must establish the rite of lifting the bow and tell the kings throughout the three worlds. Whoever can lift it, I will give him the beautiful lady as chief beloved wife."

Having thought this, just as the sun's disk appeared above the peak of great Mount Yugandhara, he bathed, dressed in shining royal ornaments, and went out to the royal hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the bright white parasol. Ministers thronged in reverence like stars surrounding the moon in the clouds. He gave royal command to the astrologers on left and right: "I will consecrate my royal daughter. I will have the kings come to lift the victorious bow. Which day will bring auspicious success for this great rite? Examine and consider it carefully, so that no stain or danger occurs."

Then the four elder astrologers received the command of the lord of the earth and examined it according to the treatises they knew. They set the moon's computation, subtracted, added, and multiplied according to the rules, and found a supreme auspicious day. Bowing at the lotus feet, they reported: "Thursday, the fourth day of the waxing fourth month, under a great amrita-luck mansion, is fitting for the rite of lifting the victorious bow. Your Majesty will gain a beloved son-in-law of the divine solar line, whose power surpasses the wheel-bearing kings. The three worlds will rely on him as a pillar of earth and world."

Then radiant King Chanok heard as if divine water had been poured into his heart. He gave command: "Ministers, set up a golden pavilion, brilliant and high as the sky. Then invite Phra Isuan's bow and place it before the victorious palace court. Also invite the holy ascetics who dwell in the great forest to come recite the Vedas with collected minds in the royal ritual hall."

Then the four great ministers received the command, offered joined hands in reverence, and went out from the royal hall.

They set up a pavilion of gold and gems, square and shining brightly, with four porches, finials, and gables like Vejayanta palace floating in the air. The floor and seats were spread with fine carpets. Jewel garlands and hanging lamps adorned it; starry hangings drooped from the ceiling. The bow-stand was inlaid with nine gems. Parasols, banners, and streamers stood in many ranks, with jeweled railings arranged around it. Broad and vast in the middle of the imperial city, it was completed according to the command.

Then he ordered the ritual officers to go invite the teachers in the forest, every band of holy sages, to come into the royal city.

Then the four ritual officers received the chief ministers' command, raised joined hands, and hurried away.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet of the great ascetics and reported: "The lord of the three worlds will establish a rite: lifting the great crowned bow of the crown of Kailasa. He invites Your Reverences and your attendants to preside over the rite."

Then the great rishis heard and rejoiced, and told the bands of yogins in busy excitement.

Each dressed in ascetic garb, held a sunshade and a great palm-leaf fan, left the hermitage halls, and turned toward the city.

When they reached the royal ritual hall, the teachers who kept the discipline sat with collected bodies on shining jeweled seats.

Rama and Sida See One Another

Now the tale will speak of the radiant kings of the solar line in every royal city. All had good fortune and power. They learned that King Chanok, crown of solar-line kings, had gone to practice vows and restrain his heart in meditation and had obtained a beautiful royal daughter in a golden lotus blossom, soft and fair as a heavenly apsara. Now he had left the vow of chastity and returned to rule his city's territory. He would marry his beautiful daughter so that she should have a fitting beloved companion. If any king had strength and power enough to lift the great crowned victorious bow, he would receive the young lady. The great rite was now established. Each king desired the lovely lady, and every royal city set out.

When they arrived, they halted the fourfold armies and set them down on left and right. Army pavilions crowded around the royal city.

Then the rishis Phra Wasis and Phra Sawamit told Phra Lak and Phra Chakri: "Now King Chanok has an auspicious royal daughter. He has gathered kings great and small to lift the great victorious bow in Mithila city. This arrow-bow belongs to the lord of Kailasa from the time he destroyed Triburam the yaksha. Its power is great; it is named the great Moli bow. If anyone can lift it, the king will give him the beautiful lady. The kings of the whole earth are now gathered here. You two are of divine lineage, powerful like the sun. They will compete in power for the prize. Beloved grandsons, come with your grandfathers." Having spoken, they put on bark-cloth shoulder cloths and forest ascetic garments, and led the two solar-line princes out from the hall in haste.

They crossed streams and broad fields and mountains, following the path through the great forest. When they reached mighty Mithila city, they went straight in through the gate.

Then the Hari-line lord, Phra Narai, looked at Mithila city and found it delightful as Dusita heaven. Buildings, markets, and shops lined the streets; women and men of the city filled the place with noise. Chariot houses, elephant houses, and horse houses stood there, and there was a field for elephant contests. Rows of banners, flags, and parasols bent and bowed as if inviting him to hurry in so that he might gain Nang Sida. The more he looked, the more he wondered, puzzled in his royal heart. As he walked, he kept watching. He saw a palace like great Vejayanta: five peaks all of mingled gems and gold, gables and bargeboards shining, Garuda figures on four sides standing firm and seizing nagas. As he admired the golden-jeweled windows, bright and lovely as if drawn by a god, his eyes met Nang Sida's eyes, and love pressed in and fixed his heart.

Then young Nang Sida, highest beloved, looked secretly through the victorious window. Her eyes met the eyes of the four-armed lord. Love and passion crowded within her because she had served beneath his feet in a former birth. Her longing and affection were immeasurable, and the lovely lady nearly lost consciousness.

Then blessed and radiant Phra Ram loved the royal lady as if fire had been set at his heart. He stood still, gazing for a while, and did not know himself until Phra Lak spoke to remind him. Then his awareness returned. As he walked on, he kept glancing toward the window, longing with love, and forced his heart to follow the holy sages until he reached the ritual hall.

Then beautiful Nang Sida, lady of the demons, wondered at the body of Phra Chakri and could not take her eyes away. She kept glancing until he vanished from sight. Her sorrow and longing increased. Seeing that he did not walk back again, the lovely lady was downcast and shaken in heart. She wished to ask someone who he was, but shame kept her from speaking. She thought intensely of the lord of earth and longed beyond measure.

Then radiant Hatsanai learned that King Chanok would give fair Phra Lakshmi to a beloved companion, one worthy of solar royal rank. The rite of Phra Isuan's bow had been set to choose a glorious husband. Now Phra Narai would lift the bow, and all the kings had come, each hoping to gain the lady and share delight with her in the territory of Mithila. "I must go preside and prevent fighting from arising." Having thought this, he led the gods and flew by power.

When he arrived, he mounted the jeweled pavilion, brilliant and shining with radiance, and sat upon the jeweled throne according to the place of the chief king of gods.

The Kings Fail and Rama Lifts the Bow

Then King Chanok, created emperor, when the ascetics and gods had come together, bathed in river water, put on ornaments fit for his person and divine garments, and came with hundreds of thousands of divine troops to the royal ritual hall.

When he arrived, he sat on the seat and raised joined hands in reverence to Kosi and the band of great yogins. The lord of earth looked out and saw the kings of every city gathered beyond counting. All were adorned in shining ornaments like gods in the sixteenth heaven. Then he glanced and saw Phra Lak and Phra Ram, lovelier than all the kings, seated behind the holy sages. The glorious king asked: "These disciples of the teachers: where is their home city? Of what solar royal lineage are they? What are their names, holy sages?"

Then the two great rishis told King Chanok: "They live in the land of Ayutthaya. These two young royal princes are grandsons of King Atchaban. This one is named Phra Rama; his younger brother is Lord Lak. They are sons of King Thotsarot of the solar line, who rules the realm of Ayutthaya. He commanded his two beloved sons to study the victorious art with us. Learning that Your Majesty had established this great rite of lifting the bow, we brought them to watch for pleasure, since they had never seen it before."

Then King Chanok, lord and emperor, heard the great holy men and was startled through all his senses. He sat silent in thought for a while, then looked at the two beautiful brothers. They were lovely as jeweled gems, their radiance and complexion shining alike. The elder one named Rames was as beautiful as a god in heaven. If he were joined with lovely Sida, it would be like the moon beside the sun. "Had I known that the divine royal line's lord had sons, I would have given my daughter to be the prince's servant. Now all the kings are present, and each will compete with bold force. I do not know how to turn aside the affair." He grieved for the lovely lady. Having thought this, he spoke graciously: "Listen, created Phra Ram. Is your royal father, the righteous king, still well?"

Then the Hari-line lord, radiant Phra Narai, heard the royal words, raised joined hands, and answered the command: "My powerful royal father rules his happy city. Subjects and people are happy and at ease. No danger or violent harm oppresses them."

Then King Chanok, lord and emperor, heard Phra Rama's voice, and it was like heavenly nectar curing his heart. The prince's speech was wise, sharp, and grounded; throughout all three worlds none could equal it. The lord of earth loved him with even deeper longing and made a truth-vow: "By the power of my rule in the ten royal virtues and by the self-discipline through which I became a rishi because I had no son or daughter and received this lady to raise as my child, now I will give her to continue the solar line and sustain the earth hereafter. If any king who has come from any city has merit fit to match my beloved child, may he lift this Moli bow without its being heavy. When he has completed this choice of companion for the beautiful lady, let the royal gongs be sounded."

Then all the kings, great and small, each strong and mighty in power and hoping to win the royal daughter, heard the important gong sound. They all rose at once, crowding and pressing in, pulling, dragging, measuring, throwing, and arguing with one another.

Then Hatsanai, lord of the heaven of the Thirty-Three, saw all those solar-line kings pulling and arguing in confusion. He spoke royal divine words: "Listen, kings and lords great and small. To lift the victorious bow of the lord of the three worlds is not something easily obtained. Do not make disorder; listen to what I say. Only one who has power and merit fit for the young lady can lift it without heaviness. It cannot be taken by mere brave force. I have come to preside here. Do not rush in panic; take your turns."

Then all the kings heard the divine royal command, rejoiced, and raised joined hands. They sat in ranks side by side, eyes fixed on the bow, and did as the god had said, each taking his turn to enter.

The kings from every city went in to lift it, but they could not even move it from its place. Power gone, strength gone, hope gone, they lost heart, pale-faced and downcast. Each grieved deeply over Sida, whose shining face and tender beauty they desired. They sighed great sighs as if their bodies could not remain alive.

Then King Chanok, lord and emperor, saw that the kings could not move the bow. The sky-passing lord rejoiced. He gave royal command: "Listen, you two beautiful princes, descendants of imperial kings. Now the kings of every city are finished. I invite you to come lift the bow carried by Lord Isuan. Let it not be wasted that you came cutting through forest paths."

Then Phra Ram of the solar line received the command, bowed, and turned to speak: "Listen, my younger brother, jewel of my eyes, dear as my life. Try lifting the Moli bow. See how heavy it is."

Then Phra Lak, who had good sense, bowed his head and went out according to the royal command.

When he arrived, he stretched out his royal hand and grasped the bow of Lord Suli. As soon as he shifted it, he understood in his spirit and returned to attend Phra Chakri.

Then radiant, blessed Phra Ram saw Phra Lak return with joined hands and understood his beautiful younger brother's sign. Great delight and joy filled him as if he had gained heavenly wealth. He rose and walked gracefully from the adorned golden seat.

When he reached it, he stretched out his right hand, bright with the discus-mark, beautiful as the trunk of a divine elephant. The four-armed lord grasped the victorious bow. The mighty holy bow did not feel heavy in his hand. He lifted it with swift ease, and the lord of earth swung it, displaying power.

He pulled it taut, drew the string, and tested the bow. Heaven and earth trembled up to Dusita. Beneath, down to Anotit, the sound thundered and roared. It became a storm wind, booming and shaking. The sky grew dark with cloud and rain; the heavens were dim and the sun's light was obscured. Then brightness spread through the whole world.

Then Hatsanai, lord of the Thirty-Three, saw Phra Harirak the discus-lord lift the great bow with ease. He blew the great conch Vijayut, whose sound thundered and shook. The elder astrologers sounded the victory gongs for the auspicious rite. The musicians played gongs and drums; trumpets thundered in tumult. Ministers, subjects, citizens, and people rejoiced and gave blessings: "May he uphold the world with the excellent lady, jewel of his heart. May the solar line flourish in lasting splendor, and may his fame spread through the ages."

Then the kings great and small saw the Hari-line lord lift the victorious bow by power. Loving the lady, ashamed, and grieving to lose her, each was sorrowful. They wished to fight, but feared his power. Their faces were not themselves. They took leave of King Chanok and of radiant Hatsanai, broke up their armies, and went out from the city in separate ways.

Then the lord of great golden Meru, together with bands of gods, asuras, forest ascetics, and holy men of knowledge, took leave of King Chanok and the discus-bearing lord. Some flew and some walked over the earth, each returning straight to his own dwelling.

Janaka Sends for Dasaratha

Then created King Chanok, after sending off the holy sages and gods, commanded the two rishis: "Your Reverences, who possess ascetic knowledge, brought these two shining princes through hidden forest paths. This time merit led them here. Phra Ram of the solar line and beloved Nang Sida are fitting companions; beneath the sky no one can equal them. I will send a beautiful royal letter to the realm of Dvaravati, inviting the divine-line king to come perform the wedding rite." Having spoken, he ordered the skilled scribes to prepare a letter and ordered wise ministers to go to Ayutthaya.

Then the scribe of rank received the command of the mighty king and wrote the letter at once. He inscribed it on a golden sheet, placed it in a shining nine-gem box, and gave it to the minister according to the righteous king's command.

Then the diligent great minister received the bright jeweled box and led the bands of soldiers away in haste.

When he reached the great royal city of Dvaravati, he went to the inner council hall and delivered the letter to the minister.

Then Sumanthan, the minister of rank, received the letter from the lord of Mithila and led the others up to attend Phra Chakri.

They bowed their heads at the lotus feet of the radiant lord of the divine royal line and reported: "King Chanok of Mithila has had ministers bring a royal letter to present beneath the lotus feet of the imperial lord." Having spoken, they opened the jeweled box, unfolded the letter, and read it in offering.

The royal letter of the lord of the great city, crown of Mithila, named mighty King Chanok, sent victorious friendship to the powerful king, crown of beautiful Ayutthaya, who is like a jeweled parasol shading the head and a refuge for the whole world. "I have a daughter of beautiful marks, her face like one drawn by a god. Therefore I gathered the kings of every city to lift the great victorious bow of Lord Phra Suli. Now Phra Ram has lifted it before Indra, gods, asuras, rishis, and forest ascetics all together. I ask Your Majesty to come perform the wedding rite and bless him, so that the solar royal line may continue and uphold the earth."

Then radiant King Thotsarot heard the letter and rejoiced through all his senses, as if divine water had entered his heart. He commanded the chief envoys: "The holy sages took our sons to fight the yakshini Kakana. A thundering sound came from afar, and I did not know they had taken them to lift the bow. The two cities will become one earth through all long ages." Having spoken, he commanded the bold horse-officer: "Go summon the two royal princes from Kaiyaket city."

Then bold Khun Manomai received the command, bowed farewell, mounted his horse, and hurried away.

When he reached mighty Kaiyaket city, his heart joyful and glad, he dismounted from the horse and went into the shining royal hall.

He bowed his head and reported fully to the princes according to the royal command: "Your royal father, lord of the earth, has sent me to invite you to go."

Then the two princes of good disposition learned the command and rejoiced. They went together to attend their royal grandfather.

When they arrived, they bowed their heads at the lord's feet and reported to the great king: "Your beloved grandsons ask leave to go to Ayutthaya city, because the crown of earth will perform the wedding of the bow-bearing lord with beautiful Sida in Mithila city."

Then King Kaiyaket heard his royal grandsons. The sky-passing lord spoke: "Go according to the royal command, in time for the splendid wedding. Tell the lord of earth that your grandfather gives blessings to the great emperor and to the discus-bearing lord who carries the bow. May they prosper in lasting welfare, and may their fame spread through the world."

Then the two younger brothers of Narai bowed their heads in glad reverence and returned to the victorious palace.

When they arrived, they spoke by command to the great officials: "Prepare the great army. We will go to Ayutthaya city."

Then the four great ministers received the command of the powerful princes, offered joined hands, and went out.

They arranged a marching army spread across left and right, setting it along both sides of the road to await the younger brothers of the four-armed lord.

Then Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut, brave in war, bathed, dressed in ornaments, and walked to mount the victorious chariots.

They broke camp with the fourfold marching army. Gongs and drums thundered and shook; they left mighty Kaiyaket and went straight to Ayutthaya city.

When they arrived, they went up to attend the crown of their heads, bowing in reverence with joined hands, and waited to hear what the lord of earth would command.

Dasaratha Travels to Mithila

Then the lord of the imperial line, when the two sons had arrived, ordered Minister Sumanthan: "Prepare elephants, horses, chariots, and tenfold brave warriors. Let them dress in display and choose grand clothing."

Then Sumanthan, wise and brave, bowed his head to receive the royal command and crawled out from the victorious hall.

He made Phra Phrot the vanguard, with soldiers filling the earth until it shook. Phra Satrut, great in maturity, was set as the rearguard to protect them. The royal army was fourfold, with brave and bold soldiers. Elephant captains rode elephants streaked with must and held goads, moving with firm grace. Horse captains rode golden-star horses, holding tasselled lances in shining display. Chariot captains rode bright golden chariots, holding bows aimed at enemies. Generals inspected and prepared the great troops; some held firearms, swords, and daggers. They yoked the royal chariots of the mighty king and the shining attendant chariots.

Then radiant King Thotsarot slept through the night on the adorned jeweled couch, pondering the royal letter and the wedding of the bow-bearing prince. When the stars and moon faded behind the mountains and soft golden light appeared, the sounds of elephants and horses thundered as if the earth were shaking. Trumpets, conches, orchestral music, and victory gongs sounded. The great troops woke and searched for one another.

He left the couch, beautiful as a god in heaven, and invited the five beautiful royals to go bathe in the water.

They washed and bathed with delight and put on sweet fragrant perfume. The radiant, victorious royal father and his two royal sons wore ruby-set trousers and cloths all patterned with curling vine designs. The three excellent royal ladies of high rank wore cloth of pure gold. Father and sons wore side panels and front panels marked with swan-scroll designs; the three solar-line queens wore gold-brocade shoulder cloths with woven borders. They all wore directional plates and breast ornaments, three lines of jeweled chains, golden belts and breast ornaments bright with diamonds, gold bracelets and armlets set with topaz, Garuda-framed rings, nine-gem crowns worth a city, and yellow-diamond ear ornaments. The royal father carried a mighty sword; the royal sons held splendid bows. The six royals, fair and fortunate like gods, followed one another and mounted the chariots.

The royal chariot was a jeweled chariot, its wheel-rims and spokes gleaming with emerald. It had three graceful curved yokes; jeweled side-panels supported the floating throne. Four faces shone with gold and gems; hanging finials and bushy ornaments were suspended from it. Golden curtains edged with gems hung on all sides; the three peaks shone like the moon. It was harnessed to four white-lotus horses, and the charioteer drove swiftly as a turning discus. The high regalia stood complete in alternating ranks, banners and parasols layered with golden flags. Gongs called out with conches; drums thundered through the forest. Attendant chariots followed neatly behind the golden chariot, company after company in ranks. Elephants led the outer lines, moving in flanking rows left and right. Charioteers urged the troops quickly along the forest road.

They crossed streams and mountain slopes, stopping in the heat and sleeping in the great forest. He invited the three beloved ladies to view the kinds of birds and trees in the woods.

Koels clung to cardamom branches and sang. Krathung-thong birds perched on kathang-han trees. Kalumphu birds darted onto salaeng-phan. Doves clung to khoi trees and called beside their mates. Mynas flew to kaeo branches. Saeng-saeo birds perched on sok trees and groomed their tails. Peacocks led their flocks to yang trees. Nok-klang settled in ranks along liap trees. Marsh birds sprang and flew. Partridges perched and called in krathin trees. Nori birds settled in rak trees, speaking together. Benjawan birds lined the wa trees. Magpie-robins perched on khae and sang while gliding away. Chang-thong birds perched on krathum and sent out their calls. Khok-ma birds perched on mok, looking about. Mynas perched on orchids and moved with grace. Cockatoos danced on takhian branches. Kingfishers perched on stumps of khlai. Kula-ho birds lined the hiang trees, while wa birds settled in rattan clumps and then flew away.

They traveled through the forest and entered the territory of great Mithila. He had all the troops halt in victorious procession order.

Then the three ministers of rank bowed their heads in farewell and hurried into the city.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet and reported to King Chanok, brave in war: "Your servants carried the lord of earth's letter to Ayutthaya. The divine-line king learned the matter and rejoiced greatly. Now he has raised the army and stopped outside the city."

Then radiant King Chanok learned the ministers' words, and the lord of earth rejoiced that his intention was fulfilled. He turned toward the Avatara and gave royal command: "You two mighty princes, your royal father has arrived. My sons, go attend the jeweled feet of the great emperor and your royal mothers, and invite them to enter the city." Having spoken, he ordered the four ministers: "Arrange the army to accompany the two beautiful princes."

Then the four bold-hearted ministers bowed their heads to receive the royal command and crawled out at once.

When they arrived, they arranged the great troops in shining coats of different colors. Twenty thousand men of fine form held lotus garlands in pairs. The horse captains all wore woven coats, saffron turbans edged with gold, and five splendid waist-sashes, holding peacock tails with graceful movement. The pages, all sons of ministers, dressed in grand shining garments. They prepared bright jeweled chariots, and commoners and lords waited for the princes to walk out.

Then Phra Ram of the solar line, bearer of the bow, and mighty Phra Lak raised joined hands to King Chanok and went forth, beautiful as two kingly gods. They swung their arms and walked gracefully to mount the shining jeweled chariot.

The charioteer drove the horses and moved the companies of troops. Flutes, gongs, and drums in procession thundered as they hurried along the road.

When they arrived, they halted the royal chariot. The two princes descended from the chariot, walked gracefully with soft arm-swinging, and came to attend the lord of earth.

They bowed their heads at the lotus feet of their royal father, brave king in war, and of their three royal mothers. With joined hands they reported the whole matter from the beginning.

Then King Thotsarot heard his beloved sons explain the matter and rejoiced as if he had gained the sixteenth heaven. He gave royal command to all the ministers: "Prepare warriors, horses, and chariots, set the appointed order, and make everything ready together."

Then created King Thotsarot, together with the seven beautiful royals, when the sun shone on the sky and earth, went to bathe and dress. Bright and shining in radiance, they moved with graceful swinging arms and mounted the adorned jeweled chariots.

He sat above the throne of the royal chariot, splendid as the blazing sun, and had the attendant troops move into the royal precincts of Mithila.

Then all the townspeople, women and men, old, young, and youthful, crowded in together, dressed grandly in display. They pressed noisily along the rows of streets as if the earth itself would sink and thunder. They saw the processions of lances, bows, and arrows, the orderly ranks and rows of banners. They saw the forms of Phra Lak and Phra Chakri and stood amazed, gazing in wonder. When the royal army of jeweled regalia came, they saw the lord of Ayutthaya mounted on the throne of the chariot, beautiful in rank, form, and splendor, as if great Brahma in power had come down to the earth. Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut followed at the end, lovely like the bow-bearing lord. Everyone raised joined hands in reverence and cried blessings through the whole city.

[Viewing the Market]

Then the radiant lord of the divine line drove the chariot into the royal city and viewed Mithila. He saw jeweled embankments and golden walls, streets paved with patterned stone, fortress bases lined with wonderful guns, gates and battle-towers shining bright. Rows of lovely women were ordered like gems, with streamers, parasols, and banners placed in ranks. Palaces floated beautifully, brightening the city with light like rows of lamps. Pavilion gables with Garudas fluttered, lifting naga tails as if leaping. Brahma faces were bright and smiling; jeweled finials and spires shone into the sky. The great field was delightful as far as the eye could see, where mighty elephants displayed their power. Viewing it with delight, he came to rest at the splendid water landing.

Then King Chanok, emperor brave in war, together with the excellent royal lady, walked out to receive the lord of earth.

Then King Thotsarot heard the gracious words, and they were like heavenly nectar curing his heart. He descended from the golden royal chariot, his face bright as the moon. King Chanok led him as they went into the bright jeweled palace.

He lowered himself onto the throne seat, beautiful as the king of the gods in heaven, amid the solar royal line, whose members bowed everywhere in throngs.

Then King Chanok, lord and emperor, spoke graciously in royal friendship: "This time both royal cities will be stable, happy, and splendid, like a jeweled parasol shading the head. I entrust my life to you."

Then the created lord of the divine solar line heard King Chanok's words and answered: "When I learned the auspicious letter, I rejoiced beyond comparison. So I raised all my armies and traveled through Himawa, hoping that we should become one sheet of gold, sharing life hereafter until earth and sky end. This is great auspicious welfare." The two kings conversed in royal courtesy until the sun slipped behind the mountain edge. Then each went to his splendid sleeping chamber.
