Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the seventeenth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives the wedding rite of Phra Ram and Sida at Mithila, their bridal chamber scene, Janaka's farewell instructions to Sida, the return procession toward Ayutthaya, Ramasun's attack and surrender, and Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut's return to Kaiyaket.

Translation

The Wedding Hall Is Prepared

Then King Chanok, lord and emperor, when golden light shone over the world and birds and jeweled roosters called to one another, rose from his shining, radiant couch. He bathed, dressed in bright royal ornaments, and walked out to the shining royal hall.

When he arrived, he sat on the jeweled throne beneath the splendid white jeweled parasol. In the midst of hundreds of thousands of divine troops, he gave a lion-like command: "Listen, astrologer lords, wise, skillful, and brave. I will consecrate my royal daughter. Find the auspicious hour and tell me what day it should be."

Then the chief astrologers took up the slate board and calculated, driving through and checking every treatise. The day was free of dark lunar faults and harmful divisions; the month and day agreed with her age. It was a great and excellent fortune, as if gods had gathered at the gates. Seeing that it was good, they bowed their heads and reported to the king, crown of royal power: "On Monday, the third day of the waxing moon, at dawn, the sixteenth-order mansion is good. It is fitting to perform the marriage rite. It will be stable, happy, and splendid. No stain or danger will arise; welfare will come at every time."

Then King Chanok, lord and emperor, heard the elder astrologers' report and rejoiced in heart. He gave royal command to the great chief ministers: "Prepare the shining jeweled palace and make it brilliant with ornaments."

Then the wise and brave ministers received the command, bowed at the lotus feet, and crawled out from the royal hall.

They prepared the great palace, shining and radiant. Fine carpets covered the golden floor; curtains and screens divided the outer ranks and inner hidden spaces. They placed the sweet waters of the five sacred rivers in vessels, arrows, jars, and great conches. Jewels and gold were piled up to form the throne, and a jeweled white parasol was set above it. Bright emerald mirrors, victory candles, and ceremonial offerings stood to left and right. Then they ordered the learned ritual attendants to go invite the great teachers.

Then the wise and brave ritual attendants bowed their heads to receive the command and hurried away together.

When they reached the forest hall of the great teacher Phra Sudhamanthan, they reported: "The lord of the three worlds will arrange the wedding rite. He has sent us to invite the holy ascetic and the band of forest rishis and hermits to enter in time for the great auspicious minute."

Then Phra Sudhamanthan the rishi and the bands of yogins heard the ritual attendants and rejoiced. Each wore tiger-skin and bark-cloth, held a palm-leaf fan to shield the face, left the leaf huts, and came together into the victorious city.

When they arrived, they went up into the palace and sat on seats according to rank, small and great. Each muttered rites and gathered the mind according to the holy ascetics' custom.

Then Hatsanai, lord of the heaven of the Thirty-Three, learned that King Thotsarot had come to Mithila with all his company to perform the consecration of Phra Chakri and beloved Phra Lakshmi. He prepared royal ornaments for both princely forms. When they were ready, he walked forth, beautiful like King Khannalaihong, with bands of divine sons and lovely heavenly women, and they flew straight down.

When he reached the royal precinct of Mithila, he led the divine attendants great and small and the heavenly women into the jeweled palace.

Then radiant King Thotsarot and King Chanok saw the three-eyed lord arrive. The two kings went out together to receive him, bowing with glad hearts, and invited him to ascend the jeweled throne beneath the great victorious white parasol.

Then the lord of great golden Meru and beloved Nang Suchada saw that the auspicious moment was near. They led the four-armed lord and the lovely lady Lakshmi, walking with graceful arms, each to enter the bathing place.

They opened golden lotus pipes, and divine water fell in fine mist. Sweet fragrant water was mixed with nine-gem gold and champunot gold. Kosi dressed the prince in trousers with bright curling stems set with topaz, and a Garuda-vine cloth, gold rising in Vasuki borders. Lovely Suchada offered divine garments to Phra Lakshmi: a brocaded shoulder cloth with floating jeweled circles, colored with rubies in splendor. The prince wore flashing front and side panels set with pearls; a directional breast-plate, chains, and a coral-gold breast ornament. The lady wore diamond plates and a jeweled belt, then breast chains. Both wore dragon-wound armlets, naga-wound bracelets, golden wrist ornaments, rings, nine-gem crowns, and brilliant directional flowers. They were beautiful as sun and moon moving through clouds.

Then Hatsanai, lord of the Thirty-Three, and lovely Nang Suchitra, as the time approached, led the Hari-line lord, while heavenly women led Phra Lakshmi. Gods, goddesses, and the royal lines of the two cities followed.

When they arrived, they had the two royal ones sit together beneath the white parasol, left and right, above the pile of gold and jewels, and joined their hands together.

The Wedding Rite

[Yani]

Now the tale will speak of the heavenly maidens who dwelt in the shining white parasol, together with the gods who guarded the city. Seeing that Phra Narai of the solar line would be joined with Phra Lakshmi, each rejoiced, raised joined hands, and cried "Sadhu" in praise. They scattered divine flower garlands everywhere, clean and sweet in fragrance, and offered blessing to the Avatara: "May he be chief in the earth."

"The auspicious time has come." The astrologers opened the offerings. Gongs sounded, music played, and trumpets roared in tumult. King Hatsanai lit the candle and sent the mirror, circling from left to right. Gods and humans in great throngs received and passed it down in ranks.

When the seven rounds were complete according to the science, the god-king extinguished the candle of blessing. With his hand he waved the smoke and anointed the two royal ones with sandal powder.

Then powerful meditating Phra Wasis and Phra Sawamit, together with wise Phra Sudhamanthan, the three great sages, took conch water and vessel water and poured it over radiant Phra Chakri and Queen Sida. Brahmans and ascetics together gave blessing: "May you two have splendor and welfare. May you enjoy vast wealth in happiness, live happily always, and remain stable, with no illness."

Then Hatsanai, lord of the Thirty-Three, with the lovely heavenly women and all the gods who had descended, when the auspicious rite was complete, each rejoiced greatly. They blessed the two beautiful royals with welfare and power: "May there be no suffering, grief, disease, or danger. May you be refuge throughout the three worlds. May you continue the solar line of Phra Harirak and become the pillar of earth and world." When this was done, the gods and ascetics took leave of radiant King Thotsarot and King Chanok, and each returned to his delightful dwelling.

Then the two royal fathers, when the wedding rite was complete, rejoiced a thousandfold. They led Phra Ram of the solar line and Nang Sida, lady of the demons, away from the shining seats and into the bright jeweled palace.

Rama and Sida in the Bridal Chamber

Then created Phra Harirak, when evening darkened the sun's light and moonlight shone through the clouds, thought deeply with love and longing for excellent Sida, as if his breast would break apart. He bathed, dressed in shining ornaments bright as the sun's rays, left the radiant golden couch, and moved with graceful arms into the jeweled chamber.

[Viewing the Beauty]

He lowered himself onto the jeweled couch, his heart clear and glad. Sitting close, he gazed at the royal lady's form: her beauty and fortune delighted the eye. Her face was lovely as the moon; her curved brows were like fine drawing; her eyes were like a deer's eyes; her nose was delicate and her ears beautiful. Her lips were full as if ready to smile; both cheeks were beautiful, her breasts beautiful, and her grace and gestures lovely. Every part of her body was perfectly formed. The more he looked, the more love crowded him, surrounding him in longing. Loving the woman beyond measure, he spoke by command.

"Beautiful one, lovely one, young lady, highest beloved: your royal father, lord of earth, set the trial of Phra Suli's bow, hoping to find a companion for your beauty, one fitting the bright solar royal line. When I heard the news, heat seized all my senses as if life would leave my body. I thought nothing of hardship, but endured the difficult forest path. By the merit and good deeds built with you, young lady, I could lift the bow. The gods in every place saw it. I invite you, beloved younger lady, turn your face and speak with me."

Then fair Nang Sida, lady of the demons, lowered herself from the jeweled couch. The queen bent low and lowered her face. Shyness and embarrassment overcame her, almost as if life would end. But she glanced sidelong and looked at Phra Chakri, the mighty lord. His face was beautiful as the sun when no cloud-mass covers it; his form was lovelier than a god's created form; his gesture and voice seized the heart. His keen eyes were sharp as arrow-light, and she could not meet the lord's gaze. She bowed with lowered face from afar, and the lady did not speak.

"Dear one, beloved younger one, beautiful young lady, highest love of my heart: do not be shy or embarrassed, lovely lady. It is not as though some stranger will violate anything. The two crowned lords of the earth have performed the Indra-consecration for us. It is fitting for your beauty and rank, beloved lady. Why withdraw and flee, royal lady? I invite you to come up onto the golden couch, as my younger beloved who tends my love. Jewel of my eyes, show mercy. Lady of the demons, do not cast me off and cut me away."

Then fair Nang Sida, jewel of the heart, heard the gracious words. She raised joined hands and answered: "Your Majesty speaks with kindness beyond measure. As for coming near your feet, I am helpless; whatever you command, command it. Whatever words are fit for one beneath your lotus feet, your servant will receive upon her head. For anything beyond my understanding and wisdom, lord of the sky, please show mercy."

"My utmost beloved, young lady who gladdens my heart: I love you as dearly as life. Why speak so, dear woman? I had no companion with whom to share love, and so I came in devotion and offered myself, until I gained this divine sumontha flower. Only then did my burning spirit grow cool." Speaking, he rose from the jeweled seat, brilliant and shining, and with both hands embraced and lifted the lovely lady onto the bright adorned couch.

"Lord of the sky, alas, is it fitting to do this? I am small in heart, as if my life will end. I am wounded in heart beyond measure." Speaking, she shook off and pushed away his hands, scowled sharply, and turned her face aside. She pinched, scratched, and pushed him away without mercy: "Have you done well, Phra Chakri?"

"Jewel of my heart, you whose graceful anger increases love: I love you beyond measure, dear woman. I have no wisdom left to hold my heart back. Even if your nails pinch and scratch me, that pain I can bear. But the passion and longing within me are beyond my heart to endure, beloved lady." Speaking, he leaned close beside her and kissed her with love. His arms slipped in, reached, and drew near the divine flower. They played and caressed, entwined in affection, mingling sweet fragrance. The bee flew through the sky and enjoyed the delicate opened flower. The wind touched soft petals, opening fragrance and pollen. The two were joined, twofold in lasting happiness; both beloved ones rejoiced together.

Then lovely Nang Sida, tender and fair, having shared union with the Hari-line lord, wondered at the flavor of love. She forgot shame, forgot her royal father, forgot the bands of lovely palace women, forgot her royal mother, and forgot the places where she had played in delight. She loved and was faithful with her whole life toward the discus-bearing lord. She leaned close against her husband until the sun's light rose.

Janaka Takes Leave of Sida

Then the royal father of Narai, bearer of the bow, when the wedding rite was complete, planned to return to the victorious city. He bathed and dressed, shining like the bright moon, left the jeweled palace, and went to King Chanok.

When he arrived, he sat together on a shining radiant seat amid ministers and officials, and spoke graciously: "This time both royal cities will be stable in supreme happiness, sharing the same earth for long ages. May Your Majesty, splendid in welfare, enjoy wealth and dwell in happiness and delight, without violent danger or harm. I ask leave to take Phra Rames and the excellent daughter-in-law to Ayutthaya, to rule over subjects and people."

Then radiant King Chanok heard the royal words and pondered in thought. Because he loved his royal daughter beyond measure, the sky-passing lord was blocked and tightened in heart. If he refused, he feared the mighty king. So he answered by decree: "I who rule this wealth had no son or daughter. I set my heart to entrust my life to Phra Ram and Nang Sida, intending to give over the white parasol and continue the imperial line here in the city of Mithila, as a great support of the earth. Now Your Majesty will take them away. It is like cutting my heart and cutting the hair from my head. I will suffer beyond suffering at every moment, yet I cannot oppose the royal command."

Then King Thotsarot heard and answered: "Lord of the sky, do not grieve or be wounded in heart. Mithila city and the great city of Dvaravati are not far apart in road or difficult wilderness. The two children will come to attend your feet. It is not as if life and body have ended. It will be as though they remain beneath your lotus feet. Do not trouble your spirit."

Then created King Chanok heard the divine-line king, and it was like fragrant divine water cooling heat. He spoke graciously: "I entrust to you my daughter, jewel of the heart. Raise her as a child from your own womb; teach her with mercy in right and wrong." Having spoken, he ordered the palace women: "Go quickly down to Phra Ram and Nang Sida. Have them come up at once."

Then the young female attendants bowed their heads to receive the lord of earth's command, offered joined hands, and hurried away.

When they reached the two solar-line royals, they sat down, raised joined hands, and reported: "The victorious royal father has sent us to invite Your Majesties to come."

Then Phra Ram and Nang Sida, jewel of the heart, learned the royal father's command and moved with graceful arms to attend the lord of earth.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet of both royal fathers and waited to hear the gracious words amid the palace women.

Then created King Chanok saw the two lovely children, beautiful as sun and moon. He called his royal daughter: "Lady of the demons, listen to your father's instruction. You will leave your royal father's breast and go to Ayutthaya city. Serve beneath the feet of your lord and husband. Guard your body, entrust body and life, and remain faithful until life ends. Do not be proud that you are the chief queen. Restrain yourself and do not be careless in royal service. Among the women whom the king keeps near, do not think with envy or stain. Your husband's royal mother and father are as though they bore your head into birth. Beloved child, be faithful to them, and lasting welfare will come. Do not cause trouble beneath his feet. Young lady, be willing and joyful. Cherish his mind always. Jewel of the heart, remember these words."

Then fair Nang Sida, lady of the demons, heard her royal father, lord of earth. She bowed her head and joined hands at his feet: "Ah, mighty lord, your kindness has long protected my head. You raised your child from youth until I grew, and did not let me be neglected. You cherished me as your eyes and heart, and taught me what was right and wrong, until you left the ascetic vow and returned to the city because you longed to establish your beloved child. You set the rite of the victorious bow to choose a companion equal in rank, equal in line, equal in beauty, to be a pillar supporting the earth. How can it be fitting that I have not served beneath the feet of my radiant royal father?" Lamenting, the lady grieved as if her life would end.

Then King Chanok, lord and emperor, and the royal mother saw their child grieving and lamenting. The two embraced the young lady, tears filling their faces, and received her spirit: "Ah, life of our lives, why weep and lament? It is necessary; we must be parted. Extinguish your grief, beautiful one. How could anyone escape father and mother? It is not that life has ended and gone away. It is fitting that you serve beneath the feet of your royal husband, bearer of the bow; then lasting splendor and welfare will come. Jewel of the heart, steady your mind well."

Then fair Nang Sida, lady of the demons, heard her father and mother as if divine water had bathed her. Her troubled grief eased. She raised joined hands in reverence above her head: "Your beloved child asks leave from beneath the feet of the lord of earth. Where shall I serve my royal father and mother as before? May Your Majesties remain stable, joyful, happy, and at ease."

Then King Chanok, wise and brave, heard his young royal daughter and pitied her beyond measure. He turned and spoke graciously: "Listen, radiant Phra Ram. You and Queen Sida have merit made together. Raise and protect her in honesty. If she stumbles or errs, do not act rashly. She will be your lasting splendor and welfare, like a jeweled parasol shading the world."

Then the jeweled discus-bearing lord heard King Chanok, his father, bowed at his feet, and answered: "Your Majesty's kindness is beyond measure. Do not let your royal heart burn with worry. I will allow nothing to trouble your feet."

Then the lord of the imperial line, when the instructions and conversation were complete, took leave of King Chanok. He led beloved Phra Ram and beautiful young Sida away from the bright jeweled seats and came to the shining jeweled palace.

When he arrived, he commanded the great chief ministers: "Prepare the mighty army. We will return to the royal city."

Then the four great ministers received the command of the powerful king, offered joined hands, and hurried out.

They placed the Avatara in command of sixty thousand soldiers in the vanguard, wearing sky-blue velvet coats and carrying matchlocks with red barrels. Five hundred thousand warriors formed the royal army in purple coats with cut patterns, holding spears and sharp swords, swinging them to pierce and cut. Phra Lak and Phra Satrut, the younger brothers, formed firm left and right wings, each with fifty thousand warriors in sandal-colored coats carrying bows. Phra Phrot held the rear guard; commoners and lords walked in pairs, sixty thousand in pink coats, carrying lances with chamari tassels. War-elephants, guarding elephants, and flanking horses were set by rank, each with its mahout and trainer riding. King Chanok also gave troops to escort the royal daughter: sixteen thousand men and women flanking the royal attendant chariots left and right. When the shining jeweled chariots were ready, they waited to follow the royal steps.

The Homeward Procession and the Omen

Then King Thotsarot, brave in war, when the sun's light had ended, entered his delightful couch. He rejoiced that he had gained an excellent daughter-in-law, just as his heart had desired. His love for her grew beyond counting, as if she were his very life. He did not sleep soundly, thinking of returning to the beautiful city, until golden light shone over sky and earth and birds urged the sun onward.

He rose from the couch, beautiful as a created king of gods, and invited the eight beautiful royals to enter the bathing place.

The attendants opened golden shower pipes, and divine water fell as fine mist. They wore sweet fragrant water mixed with bright golden pollen. Each wore ornate trousers offered with careful divine power, side panels and front panels shining, and upper garments patterned with interwoven vines. The ladies wore brocaded shoulder cloths colored in layers, jeweled necklaces, breast ornaments, and chest chains. All wore directional plates, vine chains, armlets, golden bracelets, rings in jeweled settings, bright diamond crowns and earrings, hanging garlands, and ear ornaments, and they moved with graceful arms to mount the chariots.

Then he ordered the royal chariot officer to wave the signal flag as the appointed sign. Phra Ram of the solar line, glorious in rank, moved the tenfold army onward.

The royal chariots were jeweled chariots, wheel-rims and circles bright in varied colors. The curved yokes were soft and beautiful, all jeweled; the four faces shone like Indra's palace. The cut-throne was made like a jeweled chamber, with mirror-work and diamond panels everywhere. Each chariot was decorated with red lotuses and harnessed to ten powerful horses. The charioteers drove swiftly and gracefully. Banners and rows of streamers stood in many ranks, and the hub-rays flashed in the sun. Gongs thundered; drums sounded in the forest. Four-footed and two-footed creatures flew and ran throughout the high forest, startled and circling by the axle-sound and the light of the jewels. The troops hurried the warriors, shouting until the forest shook. Dust blew up and clouded the sky as they traveled along the forest road.

Then a kingfisher bird, whose nest was beneath the surface of the earth, flew out when the sign was about to appear.

It swooped down, struck and pecked at the victory banner, then flew past on the right side, making the omen visible to the eye, and returned into the forest.

Then created King Thotsarot saw the powerful kingfisher wheel and strike down at the victory banner. He thought: "Before now nothing like this has happened. Even gods and asuras, whoever they were, feared my power. This time the wonder is great. Will an enemy come to fight? The bird has given an omen for me to know." The lord of earth stood stunned, considering. Seeing that it touched the rules of victorious marching, he issued command to the close-serving minister: "Bring an astrologer to interpret the omen."

Then the minister of rank received the command, bowed farewell, and ran in alarm to call the astrologers.

Then a wise and brave astrologer, together with his old wife, a woman of ancient learning, came riding together on a disabled elephant, teasing and joking like grandfather and grandmother, happy and at ease. When he heard that the righteous king had commanded him to be summoned, he was frightened. His hand searched for his book and treatise: "Old woman, where did you put mine?" Searching, he fell from the elephant, popped up again, and ran forward.

Then King Thotsarot told the bird omen from the beginning to the astrologer: "This event that has arisen, is it bad or good? I am puzzled and doubtful in heart. Will someone come to fight?"

Then the diligent astrologer heard the righteous king's words, bowed, and received the royal command. He examined the rules of victorious war and the time, the three-eyed lord's day and lunar date. When he understood, he reported according to the treatise: "This bird appears in the books. It is a creature from the left coming directly, touching an afflicted planet at the right-hand time. An enemy will come to trouble us, but our side will gain victory. Even if hundreds of crores came from the whole universe, they could not withstand Your Majesty's power. Your glory will appear even more throughout sky and earth."

Then King Thotsarot, brave in war, heard the astrologer's prediction. The lord of earth rejoiced, smiling with a bright face beside the excellent queens. He ordered the chariots and tenfold army to hurry onward, crossing mountains, streams, and waters.

Ramasun Blocks the Road

Now the tale will speak of Ramasun the yaksha. He lived in a jeweled mansion halfway up great Mount Meru in the heaven of the Four Great Kings. Fierce and powerful like cutting fire, famous in name and feared for his rank, he was cruel and violent beyond measure. Filled only with common envy, he went about harassing all three worlds. Humans, Garudas, asuras, and guardians feared the power of this mighty yaksha lord. He thought to travel for pleasure and view the trees in the forest. He dressed and adorned himself with divine ornaments, made himself splendid like King Vessuwan, tucked an axe at his waist and held a bow, left the adorned mansion, displayed battle-power, and flew away.

He forced his way through mist and cloud-petals until he reached the territory of great Mithila. He descended at the forest edge and wandered along the rows of streams.

He viewed the kinds of four-footed animals: royal lions, fierce lions, elephants, qilin, lions, ordered deer, fierce tigers, cruel rhinos, and chamari; mountain goats hunting along cliff edges, takkaton, porcupines, bears, monkeys, langurs, flying lemurs, and gibbons; lion-elephants wandering together; yellow tigers moving with firm steps; man-lions startling animals and making them turn; rabbits leaping and playing in whirling motion; deer standing beside their mates in wandering groups; gaurs walking alone and crying out; wild cattle following buffalo herds; sandy deer, antelope, and mongooses hiding at the mountain foot. Group after group delighted the eye, crossing in confusion without end. As he watched them, he traveled along the forest.

He glanced aside and saw bands of soldiers, jeweled chariots, and horses, noisy and thundering until the earth shook. The asura walked toward them.

He stood blocking the forest road, displayed brave power, and cried out in proclamation: "Hey, humans small as insects. What is the name of this lord of yours? Where is his city and land? Why have you all come into the forest?"

Then the diligent vanguard soldiers glanced aside and saw the kumbhanda, his body huge and immense. Commoners and lords were stunned and frightened, each looking left and right. The brave ones answered: "Hey, listen, asura. The glorious king is named radiant Thotsarot. He is chief support of the earth and rules Ayutthaya city. He has traveled with warriors to arrange his royal son's wedding. That son lifted the bow in Mithila city, gained the lady, and will take her to the victorious city. Do you not know this, that you come asking? You do not fear Phra Ram's power. Do not stay proud and arrogant, or you will perish into age-ending ash and dust."

Then Ramasun, powerful and strong, heard this, grew angry, and gnashed his teeth. The kumbhanda shouted back in coarse words: "This one of yours named Rames, said to have brave power, will today lose life and breath by the hand of Kala in battle." Speaking, he swung his bow, stamped his feet, and made his power known like a lion-king. He leapt, sprang, pierced in, and struck, chasing the warrior troops forward.

Then the troops of the vanguard, fearing the asura's power, had no wisdom to stand and fight. Shaking, pale-faced, and senseless like deer seeing a lion, they fell from horses, chariots, and elephants and ran slipping into the forest.

Then mighty Ramasun reached the front of the golden chariot. The kumbhanda saw Phra Rama and lovely Nang Sida, whose complexion was like one drawn by a god. He said: "Hey, arrogant human. Why do you bring a woman past my face? You raise yourself beyond your rank and claim the name Ram, touching the name of me, the great one. Your body will perish, and I will take your wife now."

Then radiant Phra Ram of the solar line heard the asura's words and answered: "Are you the one who would seize this lady, boasting and speaking so crudely? I am victorious radiant Phra Narai, come from Vaikuntha as Phra Rama to destroy the bands of unrighteous, wicked, envious kumbhandas. What is your name, arrogant one, not knowing that your life and breath are about to end?"

Then mighty and bold-hearted Ramasun heard, and anger crowded his spirit. He slapped his hands loudly and answered: "I am Ramasun, divine yaksha, powerful enough to shake sky and earth. You are a human, no larger than a louse. Why claim that you have incarnated? Can a firefly equal the sun? Do not boast that you are brave. Even mighty Phra Arachun lost his life beneath my power. Now Brahma has written your fate; your life and body will end." Speaking, he stamped the earth and swung his axe to display power. Smoke thickened and covered the sun's disk; the yaksha's body could not be seen. The air thundered in tumult, and lightning cracked in the clouds.

Then the three beloved queens, excellent Sida, the palace women, soldiers, and warriors heard the thunderous sound shaking Himawet and the mountains. It covered the forest and darkened the sky like night. Terrified as if their lives would end, some screamed in fear and noise. All the warriors ran fleeing and falling into one another.

Then created King Thotsarot heard the noise through the whole forest and knew that a kumbhanda had come to fight. He spoke royal words to comfort the three beloved queens: "Why fear him, beloved ones? Watch the battle-power of our beloved son."

Then the Hari-line lord, Phra Narai bearing the discus, saw young Nang Sida, his beloved, frightened and out of her senses. He embraced the lady: "Jewel of my eyes, do not fear the yaksha. Even if all earth and sky gathered against us, I would kill them and end their lives." Having spoken, he took the Phalachan arrow, laid it on the string, stood firm, and displayed bravery. Beautiful as Makhawan, the sky-passing lord released it.

The sound thundered through the air; the earth shook in fear. Light shone like the dawn sun, and looking out, they saw the asura.

Then Ramasun the yaksha saw the human's arrow released with fierce power. Furious, gnashing his teeth and roaring like the sky splitting, the kumbhanda seized an arrow, laid it on the string, stood firm, and released it by power.

The sound was like thunder striking and shook in fear up to Dusita. The arrow circled the shining chariot but could not come near Phra Chakri.

Then Lord Vishnu-protector saw violent Ramasun release weapon-arrows against him. He took up the Agniwat arrow, set it on the string, intending to destroy the yaksha's weapon. He drew it with bodily strength, and its release thundered through all three worlds.

It became a shining jeweled discus, went straight to destroy the yaksha's arrow, and shattered it before an eye could blink by the power of the four-armed lord.

Then Ramasun, demon lord brave in war, grew angry like burning fire and hurled his mighty axe.

It thundered through the sky, sounding like a great rainstorm. It became a dark cloud that dimmed the sunlight and went in pursuit of Phra Chakri's arrow.

Then Phra Ram of the radiant solar line saw the axe of Ramasun the asura, mighty in power. He drew the Phlaiwat arrow, bold and powerful, set it on the string with fixed aim, and released it by power.

Mount Meru and the seven mountain ranges thundered; the whole earth up to Akanittha shook. Darkness spread in every direction, and the siddhi arrow destroyed the asura's axe.

Then holy and mighty Ramasun the yaksha saw his axe defeated by the arrow. He grew angry, his two eyes like the dawn sun. Stamping his feet, he made a lion-roar and shook sky and earth. He leapt swiftly and seized the curved rail of the four-armed lord's victorious chariot.

Then the solar-line lord, Phra Narai bearing the bow, swung the victorious bow like burning fire and went down to attack the asura. Each struck and each parried in confusion. Neither retreated or fled. Each intended to kill the other in battle, and each had power without giving way.

Then strong and powerful Ramasun fought fiercely, pressing forward and attacking without thought for life. Both brave fighters met in combat; each swung raised weapons. They grappled back and forth, turning, circling, and changing positions in battle.

Then the victorious Avatara parried and guarded at the right moment, and the lord of earth leapt in and seized the kumbhanda.

He planted his right foot on the yaksha's left knee, intending to end his life. Swinging the mighty bow like age-ending fire, the righteous king struck the asura.

Then Ramasun the yaksha felt pain as if life would end. Grieving and downcast, he lamented: "Ah, wasted is my strength. I had power to subdue all ten directions, yet I have lost to a human no larger than a louse. My shame will be spoken through the ages; every rank of gods will disgrace me." As he lamented, he looked at Phra Chakri and saw the asura's opponent as four-armed, holding conch, discus, mace, and diamond-bright weapons. He knew that this was Narai bearing the bow. He ran in, bowed at the feet, and begged: "Lord of earth, please show favor. I have sinned and erred; my life is near its end because I did not heed the royal command. I ask you to grant me my life."

Then the solar-line lord, created Phra Narai, heard the mighty demon lord lament and ask for life. Smiling, he spoke graciously: "Listen, Ramasun the yaksha. I, who bear power, am support of the world and city. I incarnated to subdue the age, to make the world happy and at ease, to end affliction and cool the earth, and to be refuge for the three realms. Since you know your fault, I will spare your life. From this day forward, stand in truth and dharma."

Then strong and powerful Ramasun heard the Garuda-bearing lord. The kumbhanda bowed at the feet and said: "Your Majesty's mercy and kindness are immeasurable. I have nothing with which to repay beneath Phra Chakri's feet. This arrow was bestowed by Phra Sayambhu on the yaksha Tri Mek, who was my royal grandfather, and I inherited it from him. I ask to offer it beneath the feet of the lord of the three worlds, so that you may destroy violent asuras who are a common thorn in the world."

Then the lord who subdues the world in every place received the arrow from the demon lord's hand. The sky-passing king rejoiced.

Then Ramasun the yaksha, after offering the arrow, took leave of Phra Chakri and flew into the sky.

Then the Avatara, brave in war, spoke graciously: "Listen, Phra Phirun, god of rain. I entrust this bow to you. In the future, when I am hard pressed in battle, if I think of it, let me gain it as I wish." Having spoken, he threw it up.

By the power of Phra Chakrakrit, the ten directions shook in fear. Phra Phirun the god guarded it with loyal heart.

Then the gods of every rank saw Ramasun the asura defeated by the Avatara's power. Each rejoiced, leaned from windows, and clapped loudly: "In this age, the asuras and demons will be shattered by the power of the four-armed lord." Some scattered golden flowers and divine mandara blossoms with pollen, crying praises, giving blessings: "May he remain stable and prosper in welfare."

Then radiant King Thotsarot, the three royal mothers, and the bands of warriors and ministers saw Phra Ram gain victory over the kumbhanda while the gods scattered divine flowers, covering the earth and filling the forest with heavenly fragrance. Each picked up flowers, admired them, smelled them, and placed them on the head, rejoicing in wonder. The mighty royal father ordered the signal flag waved, and the tenfold army moved.

They traveled through mountains and streams, crossed pools, fields, and open forest, lodged in the wilderness, and reached Ayutthaya city.

He lowered himself onto the throne seat, beautiful as a created king of gods, in the midst of the solar royal line, palace women, and attendants in great throngs. He bestowed wealth and royal property on the young daughter-in-law, together with bands of beautiful women, guards, foreign attendants, and eunuchs. The front offices were arranged for attendance, all lovely in form and rank, complete in every office for the chief royal daughter. When this was done, he commanded the two royal sons, Phra Phrot and created Phra Satrut: "You who have power like age-ending fire and are your father's very lives, return to serve beneath the feet of your royal grandfather as before. Support the subjects and citizens so that they may live in lasting happiness and welfare."

Then radiant Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut heard their royal father, lord of earth. They raised joined hands to receive the royal command, bowed at the feet of their royal mother and royal father, took leave of Phra Ram and Nang Sida, and went to mount the shining chariots. They broke camp with the bands of warriors, shouting until the earth shook, left mighty Ayutthaya, and hurried along the forest road.

They lodged in the heat of the forest and reached beautiful Kaiyaket city. They stopped at the jeweled landing and went up into the vast palace.
