This is the eighteenth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Thoraphi's killing of Torapha, his provocation of the gods, Shiva's curse sending him toward Pali, Pali's cave battle and victory, Sukhrip's mistaken sealing of the cave and exile, Hanuman's meeting with Sukhrip, Khon's sons Mangkonkan and Saeng Athit, Thotsarot's plan to consecrate Phra Ram, and Kuchi's first counsel to Kaiyakesi.

Translation

Thoraphi Kills His Father

Now the tale will speak of brave-hearted Thoraphi. The gods had guarded him for a long time in the shining cave of Surakan. It was as if he had drunk his mother's milk there: his strength and power grew firm, and as he came of age he grew larger every day. Then he began to wander outside.

He tried his stance, roared in the forest, and charged about, hooking and goring rocks and cliffs. He followed the tracks of Torapha, measured his father's footprints, and saw that they were grown large, almost enough for him to answer in combat. He fixed his mind on becoming his father's enemy: "Today he and I shall test our force and gore one another. We shall see our strength in full." Having thought this, he hid in a thicket, caught scents, and grazed beside the stream.

Then bold King Torapha was lying among his herd and retainers. When the sun shone over the bright sky, he led the buffalo company out to wander in the forest thickets. They sported among the animals, full of pleasure, and went together along the road.

Then mighty Thoraphi, strong and fierce, saw King Torapha and rejoiced that the contest had come. He leapt, bounded, and tested his horns, arched his tail, and came near. He blocked the road before him and cried out: "Do you know me, Torapha? You are evil-hearted and cruel. You killed your own children in great number. I am a son from your own breast, and I have come to end your life."

Then powerful Torapha heard this and burned with anger like age-ending fire. He arched his tail, pricked his ears, and cried: "Are you my son, then? You come insulting me with coarse words. I am a lord of great power, famous throughout the forest. Even a hundred thousand great rutting elephants would not dare bar my way. You presume to fight your father; I will cleanse your life away until your breath is gone."

Then brave and fierce Thoraphi heard Torapha's boast. He sprang and answered him with mockery: "Your desire is corrupt. How could you wait against my power? The gods will not grant you victory. How will you escape with your life?"

Then bold King Torapha heard and became furious. His two eyes grew red like firelight. He arched his tail, charged, swayed his horns, and rushed in to gore. He hooked and thrust, turned and shifted with speed, intent on ending Thoraphi's life.

Then brave Thoraphi bent his neck, lowered his hindquarters, and stood to receive him. Horn struck horn in close combat. The sound shook and cracked like thunderbolts. When he found his moment, Thoraphi gored Torapha, and by his power Torapha's life ended.

When he had victory over his father, the buffalo rejoiced in delight. He tried his stance and displayed himself in happiness, then went back to the company of female attendants.

He caught their scents, his animal heat rising. He rejoiced, opened in desire, and joined in the play of love. He gored and turned, chased, licked, teased, and played with his mates in confusion. He lifted his ears, raised his tail, and moved in restless delight, circling with pleasure.

After that he wandered off apart from the great herd, testing his stance. Swollen with his own power, he roamed with arrogant heart.

When he reached the Himavan forest, he gored mountains and trees and cried: "Hey, gods! Whoever has power, come fight me."

Then the gods of the Himavan forest heard the unrighteous buffalo and pondered in thought. "He is of animal birth, wandering in violence with a corrupt heart. If I go out and fight him, killing his life would not be fitting. If I were to lose to him, I would be shamed before all the gods." Having thought this, the god answered: "I have no great power. You are the one who bears strength; I cannot meet your power. If you wish to seek combat, go to the Five Mountains."

Then fierce-hearted Thoraphi saw that the god was afraid of his rank. He rejoiced and went on his way.

When he reached the Five Mountains, he charged and gored a great boulder until sparks flashed like fire. Then he cried out in arrogance: "Hey, hey, gods! They say you have strength and courage beyond the gods of Himavan. Come fight me, who am mighty."

Then the five mountain gods heard the words of brutal Thoraphi and answered: "As for all of us, we cannot oppose your bodily strength. The divine guardian of the great ocean has power beyond the earth. Go wage battle against the lord of the shining ocean, and there you will see true power." Having said this, they pointed out the road.

Then bold-hearted Thoraphi heard and rejoiced. He hurried on by the force of his warlike power.

When he reached the sea, he plunged into it, goring the waters into turmoil and confusion until the whole stream was muddied. Then he roared and proclaimed: "Hey, hey, god who dwells guarding the great sea, whose name and glory are famed for power, come contest with me and show your force."

Then the radiant ocean god heard King Thoraphi's proud and arrogant speech. He answered: "I have no power. I set my mind in equanimity. Whoever comes here heated and wandering may refresh his body and be at ease. You are coarse and violent, and you do not know my benefit. If you wish to seek combat, go to Mount Kailasa."

Then bold and fierce-hearted Thoraphi heard this as if it were immortal nectar. He did not think to fear the majesty of the lord of worlds. He leapt up from the shore of the ocean with fierce and terrible power, pricked his ears, raised his tail, and came along the forest road.

When he reached golden Kailasa, he saw the radiant Lord of the Three Worlds standing there and spoke: "Lord Suli, you of power, you are the chief god, able to subdue even Tusita. You are lord in the ten directions. Come test your strength against me, who am mighty."

Then Phra Isuan, supreme lord, heard the buffalo's boast. The sky-passing lord gave divine command: "Hey, hey, look at this Thoraphi, boasting of his power and courage. You are coarse, cruel-hearted, of wretched animal birth. It was not enough that you killed your own father; now you would add my neck beneath your wheel. You are not fit to face me. If you love strife and want combat, go quickly and fight Pali, son of Kosi. Your life will end through the power of that monkey king. Then go take birth as the son of King Khon, named Mangkonkan, fierce in power, and die by the arrow of Phra Chakri."

Then mighty Thoraphi, strong and fierce, was struck by the curse of the lord of worlds, and by fate his delusion maddened his heart. He gored and battered Mount Kailasa, displaying power until the earth shook, then rushed into the forest, straight toward the city of Khitkhin.

When he reached the garden park of the radiant son of Makhawan, he smashed trees until they broke and fell in disorder, then chased and gored the monkeys in confusion.

Then the monkey troops, small and great, saw the buffalo charging after them and were terrified. No one dared stand against him. Each trembled in fear; they cried out to one another in tumult. Some crawled, some fell in confusion, and all ran mixed together back and forth.

Then brave-hearted Thoraphi, finding no one who would withstand his power, came sweeping into the royal victory court.

He cried: "Hey, monkey lord, ruler of the great city of Khitkhin! They say you have mighty power that no one can resist. I dwell in Himavan, and I too bear fierce power and courage. All the guardian gods in the universe shook and shrank back, not daring to meet my strength. Even Phra Isuan, supreme lord, flinched before my brave power. If you are good, hurry down. Let us kill each other and test our force."

Then King Pali, skilled in war, sat above the throne at the window and heard the buffalo cry. He grew angry, burning like age-ending fire. He snatched up and drew his sharp royal sword, leapt from the jeweled palace bright as the sky, displayed his power, and entered the fight.

Then the radiant buffalo king leapt and joined battle at once. Each struck, each fought, each displayed power. Two heroes faced two heroes and neither yielded. They battled, thrust, slashed, hooked, and gored. Dodging and turning in the crush, each thought nothing of life.

Then mighty Pali fought Thoraphi from morning until evening. He thought: "This buffalo is capable, bold, strong, and fierce. He is greater than the ten-headed yaksha. It is not easy to kill him in the open field. Better to lure him inside the jeweled mountain cave and contest there. There the path of battle will hinder him, and I will end his life." Having thought this, he spoke: "Look, brave-hearted Thoraphi. We have fought and tested each other, and now we know the measure of our power. Either you or I must die; there is no life for both. Now the sunlight has ended. Go back and give instructions to your herd. I too will give instructions to the women, the solar line, the troops, and all warriors. Tomorrow we shall go fight in the bright jeweled cave of Surakan, hidden from humans, garudas, vidyadharas, and all guardian beings. Even if life is lost, we will not be shamed before subjects and people."

Then brave-hearted Thoraphi, skilled in war, swollen in power and thinking only of combat, fell into the monkey's trick and answered: "If you wish to fight in the mountain, let it be as you desire. I will wait at the mouth of the shining cave." Having spoken, he returned to the forest.

Then the bold son of King Kosi saw that the buffalo had fallen into his deception, and he returned with joy.

When he came back and sat above the shining throne, he spoke to noble Sukhrip, his companion in heart: "This buffalo has great power, and I cannot yet destroy his life. Tomorrow I will lure him to fight inside the jeweled cave of Surakan. If I fight him and do not return to the palace after seven days, you, who are wise and skilled, must go look at the mountain stream. If the blood is thick, it is the buffalo's blood. If the flowing blood is thin and watery, it is mine. Then drive the troops to carry stones and close the cave mouth, so that no one will come and find the corpse." Having given this command, the son of Hatsanai went to his bed.

When bright sun rose and its light touched the mountain peaks, Pali dressed, took up his mighty royal sword, and flew by the force of his power.

He flew swiftly through the sky and reached the mouth of the shining cave of Surakan. There he saw brave Thoraphi. The monkey lord beckoned him and called: "Hey, hey, buffalo! You are arrogant and coarse. Hurry in and contest with me inside the jeweled cave of Surakan."

Then brave-hearted Thoraphi heard the son of King Makhawan and leapt into the mountain cave.

Then the radiant monkey king leapt and seized Thoraphi, turning and shifting with speed. Each was brave, each was fierce, and neither gave way. The sound resounded, shaking the mountain. Each gored, each slashed, and all was confusion; each retreated and each pursued in battle.

Then brave Thoraphi, skilled in war, charged, hooked, wheeled, and pursued in close tumult. Horns struck, feet kicked, bodies rushed and leapt. They resisted and faced each other; each had power in turn, each intent on killing the other's life.

Then mighty Pali fought battle against battle for seven days. Their strength was equal, and neither had victory. He pondered with swift wisdom: "How is this buffalo so mighty? Has some god given him strength? I must use a plan and deceive him to destroy his life." Having thought this, he stopped pressing the fight, turned away, and spoke: "Hey, hey, Thoraphi, you who shine in bold power: which mighty god gives you strength? What power is it?"

Then rough-hearted Thoraphi heard and cried back: "Why ask about my strength? No god dwells within me. My power is in my two horns. Do not presume to look down on me; I will take your life at once."

Then the radiant monkey king heard Thoraphi's words and used speech as his stratagem. He cried: "Gods, you who are radiant with strong and mighty power and dwell within the body of this buffalo: he is ungrateful. He does not bow to your kindness, but speaks cruelly and insults you. It is a waste that you have cared for him. Do not remain guarding this unrighteous one. Go to your divine mansions and enjoy yourselves with heavenly women. Listen to what I say, gods; come out together from his body."

Then the gods who guarded him heard Pali's speech, and the divine guardians saw the truth in everything. They said: "This buffalo is wretched and does not know our kindness." Each god felt wounded in heart and left the body. They revealed themselves to Pali, and their radiance lit the whole cave. Six mighty gods together flew back to their heavenly mansions.

Then brave-hearted King Pali saw that the six victorious gods no longer protected him and rejoiced. The monkey lord displayed power, and the ten directions trembled in fear. He leapt, sprang, thrust in, and drove forward with bodily strength.

With his left foot he kicked the buffalo's body; with one hand he seized and bent back the right horn. With the sacred royal sword he stabbed, turning and shifting in close combat.

Then mighty Thoraphi was furious and rushed in to fight. He gored and struck in confusion, but he stumbled and rolled and could not withstand him. He could no longer oppose the monkey's power. His strength diminished; he shrank back, wounded in heart, and blood dripped over his whole body.

Then brave-hearted King Pali came leaping boldly into battle. He stepped on King Thoraphi's horn, braced and bent it back with his left hand, swung the victorious sword with his right, and struck with the force of his power. Thoraphi died and perished.

Then the gods within the great mountain saw that the son of Kosi had power and victory over King Thoraphi. Each rejoiced, clapped their hands loudly, blessed Pali, and praised his power in great tumult. The god of rain-clouds caused rain to fall in showers, and bands of gods everywhere throughout the forest rejoiced.

Sukhrip Seals the Cave

Then brave Sukhrip waited for his elder brother, but Pali did not return after the appointed time. He was alarmed. He called Angkhot, his nephew, together with troops and warriors small and great, left the victorious city of Khitkhin, and went straight to the mountain.

They reached the golden-jeweled cave. The radiant son of the Sun did not know that rain had fallen in the night, and the monkey lord went searching. He saw blood flowing clear and pale, not thick like buffalo blood. Thinking that his elder brother had died, he was terrified and lamented. All the troops and soldiers grieved; each rolled and collapsed in sorrow, as if sense itself would leave them.

His grief and sorrow were so strong that he did not stop to examine everything fully. Thinking that his elder brother's life had ended, the monkey lord ordered the mighty troops to carry stones and pile them up, closing the great cave mouth according to the command Pali had given, leaving no mark.

Then the active monkey soldiers received the command of the son of the Sun and hurried away together.

They broke mountain peaks loose and pried out great stones, carried them to the cave, and piled them there. Their captains held sticks, inspected, and hurried them into tumult.

Then King Sukhrip, noble monkey lord, when the mountain had been piled up and closed, returned to the city.

Then mighty King Pali, after killing Thoraphi and receiving the gods' blessing, took the bright sword of Surakan and cut off the buffalo's head. He carried it on his monkey shoulder and walked away from the battlefield.

When he reached the cave mouth and saw it firmly sealed with stones, he grew angry, burning like age-ending fire. He seized the buffalo head and hurled it away.

The sealing stones collapsed, opening passages in the great cave mouth. Pali came out from the bright jeweled cave and went straight to the royal city.

When he arrived, he stood above the throne and saw the radiant viceroy. He was furious, angry as fire. The monkey lord stamped his foot and cried: "Hey, traitor! You have plotted crookedly against your elder brother. I did not die, yet you sealed the cave. Why? What a waste for one born from the same womb, of the high divine solar line. To keep you here would trouble my heart. Hurry away from this royal city."

Then victorious noble Sukhrip was so frightened his life seemed about to end. He raised joined hands and bowed at Pali's feet: "As for me, I am loyal and faithful to my elder brother. When the appointed time had passed, I brought the troops and hurried away. I saw blood flowing clear and pale from the mountain, and everyone grieved and mourned, thinking the lord had died. Therefore I had mountain stones rolled in to close the great cave mouth, according to Your Majesty's own command. May Your Majesty show mercy."

Then the bold son of Hatsanai heard and became even angrier, as if heavenly fire had touched his heart. "Hey, wretch! You speak twists and evasions. If my life had ended, you would have become lord in the city. To cover your blame, you pretended grief and brotherly love. From this day you and I are cut off from the line of elder and younger brothers. Hurry from the victorious city, or your life will perish." Speaking, he ground his teeth, swung the royal sword, and chased him out to kill him.

Then Sukhrip, son of the shining Sun, was so afraid he seemed to sink into the earth. He fled from the royal city.

As he went, he brushed away his tears. He was full of grief and sorrow, afraid and angry in his soul, sobbing in lament. "Alas, I am innocent. I have no fault. I loved my elder brother, entrusted myself to him, cherished his heart, and gave no stain in anything. Alas, he does not remember the past, when we suffered the rishi's curse, endured hardship beyond measure, and finally ruled the city together. Once, when I straightened Mount Meru for Phra Isuan, the lord created and gave Nang Dara as my reward; yet Pali lost righteousness and took her for delight. I did not let even a speck touch his feet. I loved him like a royal father. Is it fitting that he acts without mercy?" So he wept, his grief multiplying.

He crossed ravines, cliffs, and tangled forest until he came to bright Mount Amtang. He saw trees that were clean and pleasant with shade, fruits scattered everywhere, lotus ponds with graceful pods and blossoms rising bright, and clear water, clean and cool to the heart. He took refuge beside the stream.

Hanuman Joins Sukhrip

Then Hanuman, brave and wise son of the Wind, came out from his ascetic meditation rite and wandered in delight.

He chose and gathered fruits, ripe and half-ripe on the trees, and delicious honeycombs from abandoned hives, sustaining his life in the manner of a yogin.

When he came to Mount Amtang, he saw the radiant son of the Sun sitting at the foot of the mountain, and the monkey lord went straight to him.

He bowed his head down at Sukhrip's feet and said: "My royal uncle, what has happened? Why are you alone here in the forest? Seeing this is astonishing."

Then mighty Sukhrip, when he saw his beloved nephew dear as life, lamented and told the story from the beginning: "Your uncle is honest and innocent, without fault. The king has laid punishment and enmity on me and driven me from the city. I have no recourse and must wander, fleeing through the forest. Otherwise I would die." Telling this, he grieved again and again.

Then Hanuman, victorious and skilled, heard his uncle's words. The monkey lord grieved deeply.

Sukhrip embraced Hanuman. Uncle and nephew wept together. Each lamented in love for the other as if life itself would end.

When his sorrow was somewhat lightened, wise Sukhrip said to his nephew: "If you will enter the city, quickly guard yourself. Do not be proud that you are of royal blood. Your uncle will bear this suffering and dwell in the forest."

Then victorious Hanuman, tears filling his eyes in grief, answered: "If your nephew enters the city, he will be sorrowful and tormented. It is better that I stay, keep moral discipline, and gather my heart than live in the city. If sickness or distress comes, I will serve beneath your feet, among those who attend Your Majesty in the forest." Having spoken, he bowed farewell and flew to the plantain forest.

Khon's Sons

Now the tale will speak of King Khon the yaksha, younger brother of the asura Thotsakan. He ruled the city of Romkhan. He was coarse, fierce, and bold, low-minded and dark with delusion, trampling rishis and gods. The demon had a chief queen named Nang Ratchadasun, perfect in beauty as if drawn in art. Her attendants were all asura women, ten thousand ladies in number. He possessed wealth and lordship, troops of yakshas, jeweled chariots, elephants, horses, and shining jeweled palaces. His subjects lived stable, happy, and free from distress by the demon king's power, with no violent danger troubling them.

Then Queen Ratchadasun lived in union with the asura, and the lady's pregnancy grew. Thoraphi came to birth there as a royal son. When the ten months were complete, the beautiful woman bore the prince. He grew and was named Mangkonkan. His heart was bold and fierce, fitting in rank, beauty, and fame with the word of Phra Suli. Then there was a second son, younger brother of the yaksha Mangkonkan, named Saeng Athit. Their forms resembled one another. Their royal mother and father loved and delighted in them, cherishing and soothing them always as their own life and eyes.

Thotsarot Plans Rama's Consecration

Then King Thotsarot ruled in heavenly fortune in the city of Dvaravati. Golden and silver flowers were arranged in the royal city, shining with splendor. The kings of other realms bowed in praise with joined hands, while his fame spread like the sun. The servants, soldiers, and subjects lived in happiness and delight, joyful as if in a heavenly city. His age had reached sixty thousand years. He thought of his royal sons and how to increase the honor of all four: Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut would rule the city of their maternal grandfather; only Phra Ram of the solar line and his younger brother Phra Lak remained to govern Ayutthaya as a great support of the earth. "I am now very old. I will rely on the merit of my four beloved sons." Having thought this, he moved gracefully out to the royal hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the shining white parasol, surrounded by the solar royal line, ministers, and officials in dense ranks with joined hands. His rank, splendor, and power were beautiful, like the lord of Kailasa appearing before the hosts of immortal gods. The king spoke: "Phra Ram, mighty in power, is radiant Narai incarnate, come to destroy the asuras, possessing great majesty and strength. It is right to give him rule over the world and make him chief support of the earth. I, his father, will remain at ease in heart."

Then the ministers and vassal lords, small and great, heard the king's command. They bowed and answered in loyalty: "Whatever Your Majesty, mighty lord, graciously commands, all your servants will serve beneath the dust of your feet even unto life."

Then the royal father of Phra Chakrakrit called Phra Ram to sit near him and gave royal command: "Father will give you the royal fortune, to inherit the imperial line. Stand in the ten royal virtues and be the balance of the three worlds. Care for the armies and servants so they remain stable like the shade of a great tree. Take truth and honesty as the root, branches, flowers, and leaves. Four-footed and two-footed beings will come in multitude to rely on you; spread mercy to them like the scent of beautiful flowers spreading everywhere, cooling heads throughout the broad directions. Let giving be your abundant fruit, sown as reward according to rule among soldiers, troops, common people, and beggars alike. Cut off greed and take compassion as the five great rivers, flowing without end, bathing and nourishing all in happiness. Do not oppress the people and make them suffer. Fish live in cool water; birds rely on thick-leaved trees; deer come to dwell in wide forests. Spread your glory so that honor is known throughout the three worlds among humans, gods, gandharvas, and yakshas. Beloved son, listen to your father's teaching."

Then Phra Chakri, wise in spirit, listened to his victorious royal father and silently pondered in his soul. "If I rule the royal estate, who will go subdue the yaksha demons? This differs from the first command for which I was invited here: to sustain the earth. Yet if I oppose the royal command, the mighty lord may be troubled at his feet." Necessity made him accept the royal word. He raised joined hands and bowed at his father's feet.

Then King Thotsarot saw that his beloved son had accepted the command, and the sky-passing lord was happy and delighted. He turned his face and spoke to the chief astrologers: "I will have Phra Ram rule the victorious city. On what day will there be an auspicious hour?"

Then the four elder astrologers received the command and looked in their manuals according to mansion, lunar day, and day-count. In the age of Phra Chakrakrit, the gods stood in Aries; the ascendant moon had gone to Pisces; Rahu the asura looked upon the ascendant. Comparing this with the horoscope of the city, the kingdom would be stable to the rank of a universal monarch. Yet the planets in motion were very dangerous, and the gods turned their faces in agitation. There was exile from the royal city to sleep in the forest, and the consecration could not yet be performed. But divine beings had entered and moved the heart, turning evil back into good. They reported: "In fifteen days, on Monday, the third day of the waxing moon in the fourth month, at five minutes after dawn, there is a splendid and stable auspicious hour."

Then the royal father of the arrow-bearing Narai heard the astrologers' forecast and rejoiced in heart. He gave royal command to the chief ministers: "Prepare everything fully for the consecration rite. Then hurry to Kaiyaket and tell the cause to my two royal sons. Invite the two sages and the company of yogins to come."

Then honored Sumanthan bowed his head to receive the royal command, paid homage, and left the royal hall.

He had a great pavilion set up, five-spired and beautiful enough to outshine heavenly mansions, with roof ornaments, finials, and gables all of gold, jewels, and shining splendor. Fine carpets covered the inner floor. Golden vine curtains were hung in radiance, jeweled stars adorned the ceiling, and flower garlands were suspended. They set out ceremonial vessels, conches, jeweled thrones, white parasols, and offerings to left and right, with the eight royal weapons and the complete great royal regalia. Kuchi Turns Kaiyakesi's Heart

Then the hunchback servant Kuchi, who had been full of anger ever since she was struck by Phra Chakri's pellet, learned that the royal father would have Phra Ram Chakrakrit sit beneath the shining great white parasol and become the support of the earth. She bore malice toward radiant Phra Narai and thought to take revenge at last. Having thought this, Kuchi went in.

She reached beautiful Nang Kaiyakesi, bowed down, and cried. She clasped the queen's feet and lamented in pleading speech: "Now your royal husband will have the arrow-bearing Phra Chakri ascend and rule Ayutthaya city as chief of the armies. Since your servant learned this, I have suffered and grieved beyond measure. How can Your Ladyship remain silent and give no concern? Do you agree with the sky-passing lord? As for Phra Phrot of the solar line, what is low in his mother's birth? Why should he not rule the victorious city? My hurt and sadness multiply."

Then beautiful Kaiyakesi heard the hunchback's speech, and the queen saw the truth in every part. The gods also moved her mind so that she envied Phra Chakri, who was destined to go subdue the unrighteous. The lady answered: "What you say agrees with my own thought. Yet with all my power, what can I do? Since I learned of this, my heart has been sad. What shall we think of doing, Kuchi?"

Then the hunchback slave-girl smiled and answered: "Why speak so, beautiful lady? When the demon Pathutthanta oppressed the gods everywhere, have you forgotten, young woman, when His Majesty fought and destroyed the asura? I know that Your Ladyship placed your own hand in the chariot-axle's place. The king gave you a vow of truth. Why remain silent? What else are you waiting for? Phra Phrot is of the imperial line, and it is fitting to ask that the kingdom be given to him. The vow and promise he gave then give you your moment."

Then fair Kaiyakesi heard the words of the hunchback Kuchi as if divine water had been poured over her. She said: "The promise has been forgotten because so much time has passed. This time my wish will be fulfilled through your quick wisdom." Speaking, she stroked Kuchi's face and back, gave her silver and gold from the treasury, and said: "Do not be anxious or hot in heart." Then she went into the bedchamber.
