Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the nineteenth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Kaiyakesi's claim on Thotsarot's old battlefield vow, her demand that Phra Phrot receive the kingdom and Phra Ram go into the forest for fourteen years, Thotsarot's grief under the oath, Phra Ram's acceptance of exile, Kausuriya's lament, and the first collapse of the royal household before the interrupted consecration.

Translation

Thotsarot Finds Kaiyakesi Grieving

Then King Thotsarot, when the sun's bright color was gone and moonlight shone through the sky, with stars set in rows and flashing with splendor, went to sit by the royal window-throne. The inner attendants were gathered. They danced and served beneath his feet; lutes and drums sang with clear sound, sweet and beautiful, seizing the heart. The king's royal heart was delighted, yet he turned back in thought toward beautiful Kaiyakesi, because he did not see the queen among the palace women.

He bathed, cleansed himself, and dressed in garments shining as if created by gods. Then he walked gracefully away, and all the women followed.

When he reached the golden jeweled chamber, he stretched out his right hand and parted the splendid golden curtain. The sky-passing lord glanced aside and saw the lady grieving. He did not yet know the woman's stratagem, and because of love and longing he went in and sat close beside the queen.

He stroked her back and spoke: "Beloved, soft-bodied beautiful one, why are you grieving? Why does sorrow and distress multiply so heavily? Has any illness touched you? Has anyone troubled your heart, dear younger lady?" Speaking, he dried her tears. "Do not grieve or be anxious."

Then Kaiyakesi, beloved of his heart, heard the king's words and grieved even more. She sobbed and gasped by deception, but would not answer the command. She only sighed again and again on the splendid jeweled couch.

"Younger one, beloved younger one, lovely woman worthy of highest pity, why are you like this, beautiful lady? Why are you suffering in such grief and not speaking? I am confused and full of doubt; my heart burns as if by fire. To lie silent in grief like this is as if you mean to make me suffer."

Then beloved Kaiyakesi sobbed as she reported the matter: "I have no illness at all. I am bruised and wounded in heart; thinking myself slighted, I weep. It was wasted strength that I was faithful to the lord of earth, caring nothing for my own life. When you went to destroy the demon Pathutthanta in the heaven of Kosi, I set my arm in place of the jeweled chariot's axle, and so you destroyed the asura. Your Majesty gave me a promise, a royal word firm as an elephant's tusk. I, your servant, have waited and watched for a long time, yet nothing has been granted."

"Jewel, jewel of my eyes, chief queen and highest beloved, I love you as I love my own heart. Why speak so, dear woman? Your honest loyalty, risking your life and body, is merit beyond counting. I have never forgotten it. Whatever you desire, jewel of my eyes, tell me, and I will fulfill your wish, divine lady. Beautiful one, do not grieve."

Then the wise young lady heard the king's words, bowed in homage, and answered: "I ask for the truth that was vowed. May the crown above my head show favor. You plan to make your son Phra Ram lord of the world and people. Let Your Majesty delay that. First give the kingship to my son. Send Phra Ram away from the royal city to travel in the forest for fourteen years. Then let him return to rule the royal city as its splendid crown. This is my whole desire. May the king fulfill my thought."

Kaiyakesi Claims the Vow

Then the royal father of Phra Chakrakrit heard her words as if struck by a poisoned gun. His life seemed ended by the speech. "Little thing, Kaiyakesi! Her heart is black and jealous. She has come deliberately to destroy my life and let me die without pity. Among the hearts of women in the three worlds, none is like this wretch. I would like to cut open her breast and see the heart that is so base." Then he thought again of the truth he had sworn. Still more troubled, burning as if by fire, he knew that to kill her would break his vow. He had to speak gently.

"Utmost beloved, lovely lady, jewel of beauty, I love you like my own life. Why speak so, young woman? Phra Phrot is the younger brother; how could he rule before the elder? This would go against the old custom and dharma, and the three worlds would pass judgment. If you ask for anything else, I will grant it, queen. This request is like envy against my son Phra Ram. Jewel of my eyes, think carefully."

Then beautiful Kaiyakesi, highest beloved, heard and answered at once with skill: "I know the sweetness of Your Majesty's words. Kings in every city of the earth enjoy wealth and lordship according to the order of elder and younger in the royal line, because they have not made promises to one another. I do not set my mind on envy toward created Phra Ram. I am helping uphold the truth of the righteous king, so that the world may speak of it through all three worlds."

Then the great emperor, lord of the wheel, heard and burned in his soul as if struck by thunder. He sat stunned in thought for a while, then gave command: "Alas, Kaiyakesi! I loved you beyond measure; is this fitting? You show no pity. It is true that I gave you a vow, beautiful one, yet you asked for nothing. Now, when I will have Phra Ram rule the victorious city, you deliberately ruin the matter. Only your promised truth will be well; my command, already given and firm as elephant ivory, will be turned backward, bringing me immeasurable shame. Beautiful lady, you give no mercy."

Then fair Kaiyakesi heard the royal words, raised joined hands, and answered the command: "As for giving the kingdom to Phra Ram, this is behind me now. The truth Your Majesty promised is as if carved into stone. Phra Ram has no claim of merit yet; why should the royal fortune be handed to him without any counsel or consultation? While Your Majesty still sits beneath the white parasol as radiant emperor, I have not yet had my occasion. Now the kingdom would be given to Rama, and it appears that the promise will not be fulfilled. Therefore I ask the city for my son. May Your Majesty show mercy and pardon me in this matter."

Then radiant King Thotsarot listened and grew more and more grieved and angry. His heart was choked. "Alas, is it fitting that you come with such unrighteousness? Your heart is harsh, coarse, and great in violence. You love only your own child without shame and would have him pass first into heavenly royal wealth before his elder brother Phra Ram. If that seems good to you, then let it be according to your desire. But as for sending Phra Chakri away to dwell in the forest, that seems greatly against dharma; this I cannot hear from you. If Phra Ram leaves the city on any day, I will die of longing. Turn back and hold your thought; keep my life alive. Do not force him to be parted from the royal city. Jewel of my heart, show mercy."

Then beloved Kaiyakesi raised her hands and answered the king's command: "Lord who passes over the sky, choose only what is good. As for me, I am loyal and faithful beneath Your Majesty's feet. I hope to uphold the king's truth so that his glory will be known through the three worlds, like the truth of his royal father, unclouded and firm, who cut his own flesh to exchange for an animal's life, not sparing his own life. This is only Phra Ram taking the ascetic vow and dwelling in the forest for fourteen years. Soon, after that, your son will return to the victorious city. Your Majesty, supporter of the world, should not hasten to end your life. You will be refuge for the three worlds. Lord of earth, consider this well."

Then radiant King Thotsarot heard and became furious like fire. He seized the royal sword of the crown, stamped his foot, and spoke: "Hey, jealous villain! I never knew you were a crow, evil-hearted, coarse, and unrighteous. You love your own child, while you would have another's child killed. Your greed is beyond all bounds; you have no wound of shame. I raised you like a father who bore your head into birth, and now, cruel one, you would destroy my life and make your husband perish. Why keep you heavy on the earth? This evil-hearted one cannot be raised." Speaking, he swung the victorious sword and lifted it to kill.

Then Kaiyakesi, beloved of his heart, thought nothing of life. She raised joined hands and bowed at his feet. She answered the royal words: "Your Majesty raised my head; your kindness is like a father's kindness, beyond counting. If you show no mercy and kill me, I will not regret my life. But where then, lord of the three worlds, will your word remain?"

Then radiant King Thotsarot heard as if fire had been brought to burn his living soul. He swung the victorious sword, intending to kill her. But as he raised it to strike, the righteous king thought again of truth. He threw the royal sword from his hand, burning as if his body had ended. Thinking again of Phra Ram, the sky-passing lord grieved and wept heavily.

"Alas, jewel of your father's eyes, mighty one whose power shakes heaven and earth. Is it fitting that a destroyer should come to place danger on my beloved son? She deliberately envies you and forces your parting from royal wealth and kingdom. This one is deeply unrighteous, harsh, coarse, and base. It is not enough that she thinks to kill her husband; she also parts you from me without pity. Your father will die, and you must suffer walking through the forest. When sleeping, you were used to sleeping on a divine couch; now you will sleep on earth spread with dust. When eating, you were used to fine flavors; now you will eat forest fruits, yams, and roots. You must suffer rain, heat, and wind, losing happiness and delight. You were used to wearing shining garments; now you will wear poor grass-cloth. Wasted is the strength of Narai's descent, to suffer walking in the forest." Lamenting, the king grieved as if sense itself would leave him.

Then fair Kaiyakesi saw the king overcome with grief and lying still on the couch. She rejoiced in her mind because her desire had been fulfilled. "I must go stay at the doorway and allow no one to attend the king." Having thought this, she rose from the bed with boldness like a lioness, walked gracefully, and left the inner sleeping chamber.

When she reached the door, she sat down and ordered the young and elder maidservants: "You all help keep watch carefully. Let no one enter here."

Then Kaiyakesi's maidservants, together with the hunchback Kuchi, gathered at the door. Mistress and servants alike were filled with joy. Smiling small smiles and great smiles, turning their faces, they laughed and rejoiced.

Rama Comes for the Consecration

Then the ministers, small and great, and all the soldiers, outer and inner, when sunrise brightened the sky, bathed, anointed themselves, dressed finely, and came riding horses, litters, and ivory seats, waiting to receive Phra Chakri.

Then radiant Phra Kritsanurak, when the dawn brightened the earth, entered the bathing place.

He bathed and refreshed his body. He wore sweet fragrant water, trousers patterned with jewels of Surakan, and a cloth of winding plant-stems. He put on side panels with Garuda-vine designs, front panels with topaz and ruby inlays, an emerald belt, a jeweled chain, directional plates, breast ornaments, golden armlets shaped like winding dragons, diamond rings flashing like a falling rainbow, the great crown and flower garlands, earrings, and ear ornaments. He buckled on the mighty jeweled sword. In his right hand he held the bow and arrow. Then he walked with graceful arms away from the shining palace.

He reached the mounting platform and mounted the royal vehicle, beautiful as a radiant god-king. Beautiful was the solar-line king among warriors; beautiful were the hundreds of thousands of troops together; beautiful were the close ranks of wheels; beautiful was the created Narai; beautiful were the high regalia shining brightly; beautiful was the procession's ordered pairing; beautiful were banners in rows flying through the sky; beautiful were the instruments sounding together; beautiful was the sweetness of the music, as if gods were moving onward.

Then the crowds of people, small and great, pressed close together to watch the victorious rite. They saw Phra Harirak Chakri, splendid like Kosi himself riding the shining Wechayan chariot along the divine road. They admired his merit and power, raised joined hands, bowed together, and cried blessings, wishing his life long and stable.

Then wise and brave Phra Chakri went along the great road, and his heart was made uneasy. The procession's trumpets, conches, and instruments sounded together, but their notes did not seem sweet. The prince himself grew dazed and astonished until he came near the royal ritual hall.

When he arrived, he stepped down at the golden platform, moving like a lion king. He entered the bright jeweled pavilion, while brahmans and ministers followed.

He bowed at the lotus feet of learned Phra Wasis, Phra Sawamit the perfected sage, and all the company of great ascetics.

Then the ascetics Phra Wasis and Phra Sawamit saw the glorious Hari-line prince, adorned like the sun itself, fitting in power, splendor, and rank to be the crown of royal wealth. The whole company of holy ascetics praised the Avatara's merit. They waited for King Thotsarot, but did not see him leave his dwelling. The clock reached two hours, and the stable auspicious time was near. So they ordered a minister to go report to the king, royal father of the arrow-bearing lord, that the consecration hour was near and to invite him to come out.

Then honored Sumanthan received the words of the two perfected sages, paid homage, and hurried away at once.

When he reached the middle gate, he saw the maidservants of Kaiyakesi and told them all the sages' words in full.

Then wise Kuchi heard and smiled within her heart. She raised joined hands and hurried inside.

When she arrived, she bowed at the lotus feet of the beloved chief queen and reported: "The two great perfected sages have sent the minister Sumanthan to bow before the feet of the divine royal lord. They say the auspicious time for the rite is near, and ask the righteous king to come."

Then Kaiyakesi, beloved of his heart, spoke fair words: "Kuchi, wise one, go back and tell Sumanthan that the righteous king has commanded Phra Ram to be brought into the shining palace chamber."

Then hunchback Kuchi the slave-girl bowed her head to receive the royal lady's words, raised joined hands, and went out.

When she reached Sumanthan, she bowed with fingers joined and said: "The lord who rules the three worlds commands that Phra Ram be invited inside."

Then honored Sumanthan heard and was doubtful in his soul, but hurried to attend Phra Chakri.

He bowed and reported: "Your royal father, mighty lord, is inside the radiant golden palace with beautiful Kaiyakesi. I went to invite him down, but the maidservant came back with a message: there is a royal command inviting Your Majesty to ascend. This command is strange; thinking of it, it seems doubtful. I asked and questioned to know clearly, but they did not tell whether the cause was bad or good."

Then the radiant Hari-line prince heard Sumanthan the minister and pondered in thought. "What can this be? The reason is unclear. Why has my royal father not come down, but instead commands me to be brought?" Having thought this, he raised joined hands to the great teachers, left the victorious ritual hall, and entered the shining palace.

When he reached the door of the royal dwelling, he saw the chief queen Kaiyakesi sitting across the entrance with Kuchi. He bowed with joined fingers in praise.

Then Kaiyakesi saw mighty Phra Chakrakrit and said: "Royal son, listen. Now your royal father has commanded you to take the form of an ascetic and go dwell on Mount Himavan for fourteen years, then return to enjoy heavenly royal fortune and inherit the imperial line. In this royal command, my son, you must hurry away today."

Rama Accepts the Exile

Then radiant Phra Kritsanurak heard the chief queen and pondered in his heart. "My royal father's command is a bright diamond-iron decree, as if written on a sheet of stone. Why has he spoken like this? It is strange and unlike the proper course." Having thought this, he answered the words of the lord of the world: "If he orders me to be ordained as an ascetic and practice austerity in the forest for about fourteen years, this accords with the descent of his beloved son. The joy is greater than if he had given me the kingdom, because I will be able to subdue the bands of asura yakshas and become refuge for the three worlds. When he first meant me to rule the city, I did not feel enduring joy, but I feared the king's majesty and so accepted the royal word. Even if Your Majesty commands it, I will receive it upon my head. Do not be anxious or hot in heart, royal mother." Having spoken, he walked away.

When he reached the great palace, shining bright as the sky, he bowed his head at his mother's feet and reported: "Now why is my royal father troubled beneath his feet? Younger Mother Kaiyakesi had your son called in. She said that my royal father commands your son to take the form of a forest ascetic and go dwell in Himavan for fourteen years. When the years are complete, he commands me to return to the jeweled city and rule in splendor. May Your Majesty remain in welfare; this son asks leave to go."

Then beloved Kausuriya heard as if someone had cut off her arm. She suffered deeply and sighed. "Alas, is it fitting that a destroyer comes against my child? Cruel one, she is able to harm my son. She deliberately means to kill his life." The beautiful lady lamented in grief.

"Alas, my beloved child, my dear one, my highest love. Wasted is the strength of your descent into the splendid royal line. Is it fitting that you should leave the royal city and suffer such fierce sorrow? What old deed has caught up with my royal son, that he must take ascetic vows and dwell in the forest? Have we, mother and child, parted animals from each other and made them suffer separation? Has unwholesome karma come to place danger on us and move your royal father's mind? Alas, from this day I will grieve in sorrow. When I eat, I will eat only tears, suffering in misery. When I sleep, I will think of you and find no peace. Will you end distress and cool the age, or return bringing new grief and suffering? When you went to destroy the Kakana-asura, I was already troubled and weeping. This time I will be wounded in heart. Where will I have life?"

Then the jeweled lord Phra Chakrarat saw his royal mother grieving deeply. He clasped her feet and pleaded: "Your Majesty, do not suffer and weep. When the old deed has come, we must part from one another; it is not that life will end."

Then beautiful Kausuriya heard her son's words, and the queen slowly regained sense. She put her arms around her beloved son and held him close: "Jewel of your mother's eyes, do not yet listen to that woman of deception. Your mother will go attend your royal father and ask the cause and all that led to it. Wait and hear whether it is bad or good. Let the truth be clear and certain." Having said this, she walked gracefully away.

When she reached the inner gate, she met Kaiyakesi sitting sullenly and not speaking. The queen walked straight in. She saw her royal husband lying in grief and tears. The beautiful lady bowed at the king's feet and asked: "Why are you grieving and sorrowful, bearing such suffering and grief? What fault has my son, Prince Phra Ram, committed? The auspicious consecration was prepared, yet you do not give him the city; worse, you drive him to the forest. Why is this? It is deeply strange."

Then the royal father of the discus-bearing Narai heard the voice of his lovely chief queen. He turned his face, opened his eyes, and looked. He saw beautiful Kausuriya filled with grief and sorrow. Sobbing, he told her the matter: "There is no fault in our son. My sorrow and grief arise because Kaiyakesi has come as a destroyer against my life, raising the vow I promised her. When I went to destroy Pathutthanta, the demon lord, in created Makhawan's city, the axle of the chariot I rode broke in the middle of the clouds. She put her arm in, taking the place of the victory chariot's axle. I spoke a promise then, and now she has come to claim it. She asks that her son ascend and rule the city, and that radiant Phra Ram be banished to the forest as an ascetic for fourteen years. I am trapped and helpless. To kill her would make me break truth; I have no thought left and cannot oppose her. As for me, I will die. How can my life remain?"

Then beloved Kausuriya heard as if struck by black fire. The lovely lady bowed and answered: "May Your Majesty show favor. Such great grief is not fitting. The truth that was vowed, if she desires it, give it according to her wish. Do not break truth by breaking virtue. Though our beloved son will be parted to dwell in the forest, he will return after fourteen years; it is not as though he will lose his life. Phra Ram of the solar line is created Phra Narai himself. Rishis, gods, and gathered beings invited him to descend, hoping he would subdue the age and make the world happy and at peace. Do not be anxious, troubled, or distressed. Sky-passing lord, settle and cool your heart. To be parted from a beloved son only for this is not worth losing life. Your Majesty, mighty in power, will be refuge for the three worlds."

"Beloved elder lord, what you say is greatly right. Yet I am wounded by the words she spoke, as if struck by a hundred thousand thunderbolts. I am ashamed before the ministers, people, gandharvas, gods, and every rank of beings. I would rather die and not regret my life. Beloved one, remain in stability. I will take leave and go to the realm of the gods, waiting there for you, my beloved queen. Karma has come; we must part." Speaking, the king grieved.

Then beloved Kausuriya heard the royal command as if her head had been cut from her body.

"O lord who was the crest above my head, whose power always sheltered me, is it fitting that your life should end and flee to the heavenly city of the gods? Ah, my breast! Separated from my child and then from my husband, what body will I remain? Every kind of grief and wound will come; I will perish after the mighty king. Alas, splendid Ayutthaya, joyful as Tusita heaven, your power spread through the ten directions, and no enemy could withstand you. From this time onward there will be suffering, happiness will decline, delight will end, and the whole royal city will be silent and empty because the king has gone to heaven." As she lamented, she beat her breast in grief. Tears covered her face like flowing blood. She lifted the royal feet and set them on her head, then fainted with her royal husband.

ความซึ่งแสนโสมนัสสา / ยิ่งกว่าให้ผ่านอาณาจักร
