This is the second สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It continues the early royal and demon genealogies: Asuraphak's boon and defeat by Atchaban, Maliwakkha Brahma's naming as Maliwarat, Sahamaliwan's return to Lanka, Latsatian's succession, and Triburam's broken vow before Phra Isuan.

Translation

Asuraphak Receives the Diamond Mace

[Rai]

Now the tale will speak of the brave-hearted Asura-Brahma. He dwelt in the splendid divine palace of Vejayanta on the slope of Mount Cakravala. He wished to become lord over all the gods in every region. For that reason he practiced austerity, circling in attendance upon Phra Suli for many long years.

When the time came, he adorned himself, put on shining heavenly ornaments, came out from his jeweled palace, and went to great Mount Kailasa.

When he arrived, he bowed at the radiant feet of Phra Isuan. In the midst of gods, nagas, and asuras, the demon spoke to the lord of the world: "I have served beneath your feet, lord of the three worlds, continually and forever, every day until now. Yet the lord above the sky has granted me nothing. Now I ask for a mace and for a boon: let no one be able to withstand me. Lord who sustains the three worlds, ruler of beings, please be gracious."

Then radiant Phra Swayambhu, hearing the demon's words, had compassion. He gave the yaksha a diamond mace of shining power and granted him a boon: "Be lord over all the three worlds, and let no one's power defeat you."

Then the ambitious Asura-Brahma received the boon of the lord of the three worlds. With the diamond mace in hand, he took leave and departed.

He came out from shining Kailasa, displayed his power fiercely and boldly, danced and glided through the clouds, and returned to his bright palace.

Maliwakkha Brahma Intervenes

Then radiant Maliwakkha Brahma saw Phra Isuan, crown of the gods, give that unrighteous demon a boon, together with the divine weapon, the mace that would conquer in every heaven. He was startled, as if someone had struck him, because that vile demon would grow swollen in mind like a bold serpent. He would roam, attack, and invade, holding the whole earth in a demon's hand.

Maliwakkha could not stay silent as if he knew nothing, for he had pity on the radiant line of Narai. He thought it over, raised joined hands, and wisely spoke to Phra Suli: "You have given that yaksha a mace and a powerful boon. My friend is a base and violent being. He will torment the world and set it burning. Even Thao Atchaban, ruler of Ayutthaya, will not be able to stand against him. Lord of the three worlds, ruler of beings, please be gracious. Grant a divine weapon to radiant Thao Atchaban, so that he may conquer this asura and the earth may depend on his power."

Then Phra Swayambhu heard him and answered: "What you say is right, and I thank you. Alas for the line of the Lord of the Discus: only when you spoke did I remember. Long ago I sent Anomatan to dwell in Jambudvipa. Now he has reached the end of his life, and his son has inherited the kingdom. Only now do I know he is named Atchaban. Look at this: I forgot for a very long time."

Having spoken, he gave a boon with a sword: "Let no one in the three worlds withstand it. Let it conquer the victorious diamond mace which I gave to the asura. Hurry and take it down. Deliver it to lord Atchaban, so that he may subdue the hostile bands of fools who would torment the world and the earth."

Then radiant Maliwakkha Brahma received the sword and the boon with joy, bowed with joined hands, and flew away.

When he reached great royal Ayutthaya, he hovered before the victorious window and called out in fair words: "Listen, Atchaban of the solar line, scion of Hari who is skilled in battle. Now Phra Isuan of terrible power has commanded me and sent me here."

Then lord Atchaban was seated above his shining jeweled throne. Hearing the speech and the name of Phra Swayambhu, crown of splendid Kailasa, he looked out through the jeweled window and saw the powerful god. He spoke sweet words: "What command has the lord of great Kailasa given? Divine one, please come down."

Then lord Maliwakkha Brahma floated down from the clouds and entered the great royal hall.

When he arrived, he sat upon a radiant shining seat. Neither bowed to the other; they honored one another with goodwill.

Then radiant Thao Atchaban greeted him with royal friendship and asked: "What command has Phra Isuan proclaimed, and what business brings you? What is your name, and why have you received a divine order?"

Then the honored Brahma answered in sweet speech: "My name is Mali Brahma. I went to attend Phra Isuan, the supreme lord, at Mount Kailasa, his royal seat. Just then the wicked-minded Asura-Brahma, filled with arrogance, bowed and asked for a boon, so that he might conquer throughout the ten directions and make enemies fear his lion-like power. The lord of the earth also gave that yaksha a terrible mace.

"I told him that the demon was vile and would oppress the gods in the three worlds; that he would trample even the scion of Hari. So Phra Isuan gave this mighty sword, able to overcome the yaksha's mace, and gave a blessing of welfare. He commanded me to bring it here."

Having spoken, he gave over the sword with a joyful heart: "May you have victory over the wicked asura, as if the lord of the world himself had granted the blessing."

Then lord Atchaban, skilled in war, received the jeweled sword of power together with the blessing. He turned his face toward Kailasa, bowed at the radiant feet of Isuan, and spoke sweet words: "Your kindness in this matter surpasses measure. We two shall live in righteousness and be beloved friends until life itself ends. Let there be no suspicion between us in anything."

Then Maliwakkha Brahma accepted the oath of friendship. The god said fair words: "Remain in peace, beloved friend. I must now take my leave." Having spoken, he flew up into the sky and went to his bright palace.

Asuraphak Defies the Worlds

Then the yaksha Asuraphak, since receiving the diamond mace from Phra Suli, thought with overflowing greed. He intended to conquer the ten directions and bring them under the power of the asuras by his victorious might. Having thought this, he adorned himself and put on ornaments bright with pearls and gems. He left the summit of Mount Cakravala and flew leaping through the clouds.

He displayed himself, brandishing the diamond mace, twisting and rushing through the air. Its light became fire, flashing and scattering through the sky. Then he cried out in proclamation: "I am the one named Asuraphak. No power can be compared to mine. I will cleanse the three worlds into destruction by my terrible strength now."

Having spoken, he displayed his might and chased the gods of every rank. Gandharvas, celestial beings, nagas, and forest sages were all thrown into confusion.

Then the hosts of gods, great and small, garudas, nagas, and forest ascetics were terrified; their spirits flew from them. The power of the diamond mace frightened them all. Throughout the city of heaven and the lands of earth they feared the force of the wicked asura. Some fled beyond the borders, suffering as they crossed streams, ravines, and cliffs. Some bands of sages and gods flew to the city of Ayutthaya.

When they arrived, they told radiant Thao Atchaban what had happened: "Asura-Brahma has come to trample us. He is striking and chasing the hosts of gods. Now he is still roaring like a lion at the foot of golden Mount Meru. Lord of mighty power, help cool the burning world."

Then lord Atchaban heard the gods, adepts, and sages, and gave his command: "Look at that asura, Asuraphak, so swollen, violent, and base. I will destroy him utterly, so that he will no longer be a thorn to the earth."

Having spoken, he ordered the four chariot officers: "Prepare the jeweled chariot. I will go subdue the wicked asura."

Then the honored chariot-lords received the command of the powerful king, bowed in farewell, and hurried away.

They prepared the victorious jeweled chariot, splendid and shining, and yoked it with ten pairs of swift horses, strong as rushing wind. The harness glittered with starry gold ornament. The horses stood bright and firm, stepping gracefully. The chariot was drawn up beside the nine-jeweled mounting platform, waiting for the emperor to depart.

Then lord Atchaban came down from the jeweled throne and went in ceremony to bathe.

Golden water was sprinkled like falling rain. He anointed himself with fragrant pollen and perfume. He put on jeweled lower garments bright with rubies, a cloth patterned with dancing kinnaris, coral-curved side panels, emerald hanging sashes, and a dark travel garment worked with pierced patterns. He wore breastplates and directional ornaments set with topaz, three lines of red-gold chains, golden armlets in dragon form, diamond rings in Garuda settings, the great flowered crown, nine-gem ear ornaments, and then, shining like the sun itself, took up the sword and stepped to mount the chariot.

O royal chariot, his chariot: its wheel-hubs were all emerald, its curving shafts were delicate and beautiful, its tiered throne and finials were set with rows of ornament. Pierced jeweled vines, gold partitions, lotus-petal work, and five shining spires made it resemble the palace of the sun. It was yoked with bold cloud-horses leaping through the sky. The charioteer drove it against the upper wind, and gods led the army forward. It was adorned with parasols, clustered standards, rows of fluttering banners, pipes, drums, gongs, and curved trumpets. It flew swiftly toward Mount Meru.

Then the yaksha Asuraphak saw the jeweled chariot coming, surrounded by gods. "Who is this," he thought, "so proud and confident in power, not thinking that his life will end?" The asura flared with anger like lightning and hurled himself forward to bar the chariot's path.

He shouted in proclamation: "Hey! Hey! Who are you, and where have you come from? What is your race, name, and title, that you dare act so proudly? Do you not fear me, the one named Asuraphak, holder of fierce and mighty power? In all three worlds everyone fears my force and cannot match my strength. You are only a little human, like a tiny firefly. Will you compete with the light of the sun? Your life will end in less than a blink."

Then the lord of the world, protector of earth, heard the asura's words. The king answered: "Are you the one named Asuraphak, swollen with power, arrogant, and vile? Stop boasting of your might. I do not fear an asura's force. You are like a deer; I am the lion-king. My name is Atchaban, lord over the royal city of Ayutthaya upon the earth. Sages and gods of heaven have invited me to slay you, because you act with a wicked heart. Lord of demons, your life will end."

Then the strong and mighty Asuraphak heard him, ground his teeth, and his two eyes reddened like flashing fire. His hand swung the diamond mace, glittering with light like a streak of lightning. He sprang upon the radiant jeweled chariot, striking left and right in battle.

Then radiant Thao Atchaban brandished the crowned sword with beauty like the four-armed lord himself. He warded off the blow and struck with the diamond blade. The mace was hit and cut cleanly into two pieces. He battled hand to hand and hewed the asura down. By his power the asura died.

Then the gods of every rank saw the line of Hari, wielder of the discus, slay the asura and end his life. They were full of delight, laughing aloud and clapping their hands. Celestial maidens and young heavenly women opened their palaces, leaned out, and bowed. Some showered divine flowers until they fell thickly from heaven. They shouted blessings in clamor, and the sound thundered through the whole world.

Then lord Atchaban, having finished slaying the asura, cut off the yaksha's head and placed it at the rear of the chariot. He had the horses driven up into the sky, beautiful as the sun with a halo, flew across the seven mountain ranges, and came straight to his city.

He set the demon's head on a stake and cursed it to guard the royal garden. By the king's effective speech, the asura became so according to his command.

When the curse of the demon's head was complete, the lord of the world descended from the jeweled chariot and entered the great ornate palace.

Maliwakkha Becomes Maliwarat

Then Maliwakkha Brahma, brave in battle, of the same line as powerful Chaturaphak, lord of the city of Lanka, had become a sworn friend, a friend unto death and life, of Thao Atchaban, ruler of Ayutthaya. He stood firm in honest truth and thought no malice or anger. So he went to attend Phra Isuan at great Mount Kailasa.

He arrived with gods, gandharvas, nagas, and ascetics. He crawled near the glorious lord, raised his hands, bowed, and said: "I have come to take leave and go dwell on the sky-topped mountain. I ask for effective speech and mighty power; please be gracious."

Then radiant Phra Swayambhu heard Thao Mali and reflected: "This Brahma is truthful and righteous. It is proper for me to grant him a boon." Having thought this, the lord of the three worlds blessed him by divine command: "May whatever you desire be obtained according to your thought, as if written with diamond iron upon a stone slab." Then he gave him a divine name: "You shall be called Maliwarat of mighty power. Be lord over the gandharvas, gods, and yakshas in the mountains. Enjoy happiness forever by the blessing I grant."

Then Thao Mali, noble in spirit, raised his hands and received the blessing upon his head with a joyful heart. He bowed at the supreme feet of radiant Phra Isuan, then flew up through the air by his power, straight to the sky-topped mountain.

Sahamaliwan Returns to Lanka

[Slow]

Now the tale will speak of the yaksha Sahamaliwan, who once ruled the island of Lanka and fled from the Lord of the Discus down to the underworld. He was of the supreme Brahma line, mighty and brave. He learned that wise Sahabadi had come to build the royal seat of Lanka for a powerful Dhada of the same solar lineage, that he had bestowed royal wealth and named him Maha Chaturaphak. Sahamaliwan rejoiced as if he had gained the wealth of all three worlds, for this Dhada was excellent and would become the pillar by which Brahma's line continued.

Then the demon ministers received the command of the asura king, bowed in farewell, and hurried away.

They arranged the warrior host, choosing only those skilled and brave in battle. Four groups, each with power, held every kind of weapon. They formed ranks before and behind, crowded and clamoring. All were bold in war and could cleave the ocean as they wished. If they had to fly through the air, they could go swiftly and proudly. They surrounded the palace-car on every side and waited for the asura's departure.

Then Thao Sahamaliwan came down from his jeweled throne and entered the place of bathing.

He washed and bathed, taking pleasure in his body. He put on sweet divine perfume, ornate lower garments, cloth woven with vine and flame patterns, swinging side panels, a garment with interlacing roundels, jeweled armor fastened across his breast, a chain-like necklace, directional plates, a golden emerald serpent armlet, diamond and jewel rings, a jeweled crown hung with ear ornaments, and took the royal sword paired with that of a god. Its radiance shone brightly. He came up into the noble palace-car, surrounded by his great army.

O palace-car, jeweled palace-car, excellent beyond thought, going wherever one wished: it floated and moved from the victorious city, swift as the wind. It came straight to the navel of the great ocean, whirled and circled up, rose from the deep sea, rushed ahead, and flashed like divine jewel-light. It passed the summit of the sky, bright with nine gems, flew through the heavens, and shone beyond Indra's palace. Its sound roared and thundered, making all ten directions tremble. The sky was dimmed and the sun's light was obscured as the army hurried on.

When he reached the royal seat of Lanka, the demon lord drove the shining jeweled palace-car down into the bright palace forecourt.

Then the yaksha Thao Chaturaphak came out with countless troops to the radiant porch. When he saw Sahamaliwan, his beloved kinsman and friend, he rejoiced and called to him from afar, then went down to receive the asura king.

He led him by the hand up into the golden palace, bright with radiance, and seated him above the splendid divine throne. The two kings rejoiced together.

Then Sahamaliwan embraced the lord of Lanka. Tears gathered in his eyes and he spoke: "My own life has been hard, with suffering like blood flowing from my eyes, because radiant Phra Narai was deluded by anger and malice. Seeing me as great upon the earth, he came to attack, oppress, and kill me. In distress I fled from Lanka, and we went down to dwell in the underworld. When I learned that Thao Sahabadi had come to build a royal city for you, descendant of Brahma, to rule as a heavenly kingdom, I rejoiced as if I had died and been born again. Therefore I came up to see you, my dear one, after long years without seeing each other."

Then Thao Chaturaphak heard Sahamaliwan recount the suffering of the past. He could not hold back his grief; tears gathered in both eyes. He spoke sweet words: "Alas, how could this happen to you, lord of Brahma's line? I have burned with sorrow, thinking of you every day and night. For this reason Sahabadi came and built the city of Lanka, hoping that the solar line would continue and remain firm in the future. He gave me the city to rule. Now that you have come, stay here with us. Support the people and subjects so that they may be stable, happy, and secure. Then we can be together with the kin of our line within the territory of Lanka."

Then Sahamaliwan heard words like heavenly amrita. The asura embraced him and kissed his face: "It was not in vain that we share the Brahma line. You are generous and love the lineage of your kin. I thank you beyond measure, but I must take my leave and return. This jeweled palace-car was given to me by Phra Suli. It is powerful and seems to have a mind of its own; wherever one wishes to go, it can go. But a woman who is widowed, whose husband has lost his life, cannot ride it flying through the sky, because it is under Phra Suli's curse. You should keep it in my place, for the splendor of the yaksha city." Having spoken, the two kings went to the jeweled forecourt.

Then lord Chaturaphak saw the shining jeweled palace-car, beautiful as great Vejayanta. Its ornaments were layered, all of jewels, shimmering with rainbow light and competing with the color of the sun. Many sights delighted and enlarged the heart. He spoke sweet words: "What you have brought and given me has a kindness greater than the three worlds, as if I had received the wealth of heaven."

Then Sahamaliwan spoke a fair command: "Remain in peace and happiness. May your noble power and strength be such that no direction can oppose you. As for me, I will take my leave and go to the victorious city of the underworld." After saying this, he moved out with his army, left the royal seat of Lanka, pierced down through the earth, and went straight to his city.

Then Thao Chaturaphak ruled for sixty thousand years and went to heaven. Prince Latsatian became ruler of Lanka, mighty beneath the great white parasol, with lordly wealth complete as in a heavenly city. He had five chief queens, all marked by auspicious beauty as if painted. One was named Chali Sumontha, the next Chitramali, another Suwanmalai, one Praphai Chom Si, and one Ratchada Thewi, each excellent and splendid in beauty. The five possessed the five beauties, fashioned as if by the gods, beloved young women dear as his own eyes and heart. He ruled over the asura armies. His fame spread through sky and earth; his glory appeared everywhere in the three worlds.

Maliwarat Visits Latsatian

Then radiant Thao Maliwarat dwelt on the sky-topped mountain and thought of Chaturaphak, ruler of the great city of Lanka, the high-born line of Brahma. He commanded the gandharvas and Nanda yakshas: "I will go to the city of Lanka."

Then the powerful and brave gandharvas bowed their heads to receive the royal command, took leave, and went out.

They levied a marching army. Escorts filled the way beyond counting. The front ranks held victory banners, their ends fluttering in the sky. One group held swords and shields, standing thickly upon the mountain slopes. Another held spears, turning them back and forth in their hands. Another held golden flower garlands, standing beside the royal chariot. The rear ranks held every kind of weapon, crowded and ready together.

Then Thao Maliwarat, creator-like in glory, when the red light of dawn arose, entered the bathing place.

Divine water, divine streams, and flowers fell as mist like a fine rain. He anointed himself with fragrant perfumes blended with flower pollen. He put on shining jeweled lower garments, white cloth with raised flame-pattern borders, ornate swan-vine side panels, ruby-bright hanging sashes, a white gold-latticed garment, three emerald chains, directional ornaments and breastplate carved with designs, golden dragon armlets, rings in yellow diamond settings, a shining jeweled crown with fluttering petals, ear ornaments, earrings, and flowers. In his hand he took the sword and mounted the chariot.

O chariot, jeweled chariot, glittering and splendid with emerald: its soft shafts were graceful, its tiered throne shone in layers, its jeweled hubs and rim were fitted with ornaments, its curving yoke stood elegant, its three golden banners flashed at their tips. Divine cloud-horses were yoked to it, leaping and prancing in joy. High regalia rose splendidly; jeweled and coral parasols brightened the sky. Fans waved to screen the sun's light, and rows of streamers fluttered left and right. The divine army moved and opened the way, thickly escorting him.

When he reached the royal seat of Lanka with his warriors great and small, he had the shining jeweled chariot moved down into the bright palace forecourt.

Then the yaksha Thao Latsatian went to the jeweled window and saw Thao Mali, his uncle, floating through the sky, beautiful as the sun in the heavens. Filled with delight, he came down to receive the lord.

When he reached him, he bowed at his lotus feet, prostrated himself, and sighed deeply. Then he invited him up into the shining victorious palace.

Then Thao Maliwarat sat upon a jeweled and golden seat and asked: "Where is the lord, your royal father, the powerful one? Your uncle is puzzled and uneasy. It has never been like this before."

Then the yaksha Thao Latsatian heard the sweet speech, raised joined hands, and answered the command: "My powerful father has reached the end of his life." As he spoke, he embraced his uncle's feet, and tears flowed over his grieving face.

Then radiant Thao Maliwarat heard this and was stunned in his whole body. The lord felt pity and deep sorrow.

"Alas. Whoever is born in samsara cannot escape Lord Time. In all three realms, as far as the sky and heaven, everything will end and vanish the same way. From this day he will be hidden from sight like the moon gone dark with all its light extinguished. Though I, his elder, still have life, I too will perish after my younger brother."

As he spoke, he gave counsel: "You who share the royal line, possess your father's kingdom and make it lasting in happiness. Support the people and the realm. Your uncle will now take leave of his beloved nephew." Having spoken, he moved out with the hosts of gods and returned to the sky-topped mountain.

Triburam Seeks a Boon

[Slow]

Now the tale will speak of the yaksha Triburam. He ruled the sixteen cities and had fearsome power. All ten directions trembled and could not stand against his might. He considered the matter with an arrogant and hostile heart: "I have fierce power greater than humans, gods, sages, garudas, gandharvas, and nagas. The three worlds fear my strength. But radiant four-armed Phra Narai has terrible power and bravery. If he comes to attack and oppress me, I think my life will end. Better that I perform a rite and ask Phra Suli for a boon, so that my power and strength will be terrible, and I may have victory over the Lord of the Discus."

Having thought this, he gave commands to the demon ministers on left and right: "I am going to establish a rite of knowledge. Guard the city well." After commanding them, he proceeded into the splendid jeweled palace, washed and bathed, and refreshed his yaksha body.

He put on green garments, deep green and bright, with a green scarf shining splendidly. He bound up his matted hair, put on necklaces, and marked his face with sandal paste as a yogi. He held a rosary of emerald garuda-eggs, appearing like a divine sage. Taking a powerful sacred bow, the asura flew into the clouds.

He came to the Sarabhu stream, where the water roared and shone. The banks were smooth and clean to the eye, with an ornate stone seat under the shade of a rang tree, whose leaves blocked the sunlight. It was delightful like Nandavana garden. The demon lord went straight in.

He sat down by the black fire-pit according to the manual of occult rites. Closing his eyes, reciting spells, and gathering his mind, he remained for seven years and seven days.

Then Phra Isuan, supreme creator, was seated on his shining jeweled throne in the ornate heavenly palace. Hosts of divine women attended his feet in happy assembly, like stars surrounding the moon. Then heat and restlessness spread through his whole body. He turned his divine eye downward and saw the asura yaksha performing his ritual near the Sarabhu waters.

So he stepped down from the radiant throne of jewels and pearls, mounted the mighty royal bull, and flew leaping toward the asura.

When he arrived, he stood before Triburam, the powerful yaksha, and spoke by divine command: "Hey, demon lord, why have you come to torment your body beside a blazing fire-pit for so many long years? What do you desire, asura?"

Then Triburam, powerful yaksha, heard him and opened his eyes. Seeing the lord of the world, he rejoiced. He bowed his head in reverence at the radiant feet of Phra Isuan and said: "I have practiced austerity for all this time because I ask for a boon of mighty power. Let even Phra Hari, Lord of the Discus, be unable to destroy my life. Lord of the three worlds, ruler of beings, please be gracious."

Then the lord of great Kailasa heard the demon's words and gave a royal command: "I grant you a boon of noble power and strength. But you must rule with justice. Then Triburam, powerful yaksha, bowed his head and received Phra Suli's blessing. The asura answered the command: "I will take the teaching you have given and place it upon my head. I will rule with the ten royal virtues until my life ends."

Then the crown of great Kailasa, after granting the teaching and the victorious boon to the asura Triburam, drove the royal bull leaping up into the sky. He pierced the mist, came out through the layers of cloud, and returned straight to his bright palace.

Triburam Breaks the Command

He sat above the divine throne, surrounded by all his ministers. He grew swollen in royal greatness and went beyond the words of the lord of the world. He became coarse and cruel, fearing no one, acting according to a yaksha's will. No one in the ten directions could withstand his power; all feared the demon's force. His mind turned false and corrupt, desiring to taste love with the heavenly women, the attendants of the gods in every level of the divine palaces.

Having thought this, he adorned himself and put on ornaments bright with pearls and jewels. Holding a shining jeweled club in his hand, he brandished it and flew leaping away.

He reached the heaven of the Four Great Kings and displayed power until it trembled and shook. He chased the heavenly gods, and all the sky city was thrown into alarm. He approached and embraced the heavenly women, then went on to Tavatimsa. He climbed higher to Yama and then to the splendid world of Tusita, to Nimmanarati and broad Paranimmitavasavatti. He seized at the young heavenly maidens, who screamed and ran wildly, senseless with fear.

Then the lord of golden Mount Meru and all the gods in the six rooms of heaven saw Triburam, the demon lord, swollen with power, crude and shameless. All the gods were ashamed and distressed, and they went together to attend Phra Suli.
