Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the twentieth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Kaiyakesi's sending of bark garments to Phra Ram, Phra Lak's anger and decision to follow him, Sida's vow to accompany her husband, the farewells to Kausuriya and Samut Thewi, the departure from Ayutthaya, Sumanthan's failed pursuit, Thotsarot's death, the royal mourning and funeral preparation, and the three exiles' arrival at the Satong river.

Translation

Kaiyakesi Sends the Ascetic Garments

Then beloved Kaiyakesi sat at the doorway, watching the righteous king. She saw lovely Kausuriya, face lowered, weeping in grief, lamenting and crying until the beautiful lady lay still in a faint. Kaiyakesi was filled with great delight; her face shone like moonlight. She showed no care or sympathy toward her royal husband. She arranged bark cloth and grass garments, clothing proper for rishis, handed them to hunchback Kuchi, and spoke: "Take these things to Phra Ram, so that he may take the vow as a forest ascetic. Then hurry him out of the city. Do not let the evening hour pass."

Then Kuchi, the active hunchback, received the ascetic garments, bowed, and hurried away.

When she reached Phra Hariwong, she sat down, raised joined hands, and reported: "Now lovely Kaiyakesi asks the earth-lord to keep his truth: she has Phra Phrot raised to royal wealth, and has Your Majesty leave the moon-palace to dwell in the forest for fourteen years. She has sent me to offer the ordination garments. Let the lord's son hurry to be ordained as a rishi. She invites Your Majesty to leave the city today, according to the royal lady's command."

Then Phra Ram, lord of the solar line, received the ascetic garments and spoke by command: "Go bow and report to the royal mother that I bow with joined hands. I will not let my victorious royal father's truth lose dharma. Not only for fourteen years; I would offer my life until death, so that the gods may praise me as grateful to my father. As for my younger brother's rule over the royal city, may it be stable and supremely happy. Today I will bow farewell. Do not let the royal mother be hot in heart."

Then thoughtful Kuchi received the command, took leave, and went to the victorious palace of the queen.

When she arrived, she bowed at Kaiyakesi's lotus feet and reported all of Phra Ram Chakri's words in full.

Then Phra Hariwong, created Narai, felt his mind sink in sorrow, and the righteous lord was moved in soul. Then he thought about the jealous violent ones who oppressed rishis and gods, and how they had invited him to descend and fight them. "In this time it is right to go first and subdue the hosts of sinful beings. The three worlds will become stable, and my fame and honor will continue."

Having thought this, he removed the royal ornaments, feeling no attachment to the kingdom. He wore bark cloth and a shoulder garment, his heart glad and joyful. He marked himself with powder, tied his hair in a topknot, and wore a rosary. He was beautiful like a divine rishi. He stilled his mind and restrained his senses in the manner of a wise yogin.

Lakshmana's Anger

Then Phra Lak, his younger brother, learned that his elder brother would not rule the people and subjects, but had taken the vow and would go dwell in the forest because of Kaiyakesi. He grew angry, furious as fire. He seized his powerful bow, swung it, and displayed his might, bold as a lion king. He came down from the splendid palace and went to the Moon Court.

When he arrived, he roared like a lion, stamped his foot so that all shook, and cried: "Who is jealous and unrighteous, filled with dark delusion and desire, corrupt, greedy beyond measure, base and intentionally envious, reaching higher than her face permits, driving my elder brother to dwell in the forest so her own younger son can rule the city? That wretched, ill-starred woman: I will kill her and end her life." Speaking, he strung the bow to test its power. The sound thundered through every rank of beings. All the earth trembled, and the sun was darkened beneath shadow and smoke.

Then Phra Kritsanurak heard the sound like age-ending fire. He turned his face and looked. Seeing Phra Lak of the solar line raising and drawing the bow, he was startled through his whole body. "Why has my younger brother come to make this disturbance? If I remain still now, my beloved brother may shoot and destroy. The world will burn and perish." The sky-passing lord hurried toward him.

When he arrived, he seized the bow and said: "Stop first and listen to your elder brother. Do not be rash in anger; I will tell you the matter clearly. Long ago, our royal father spoke and granted a boon to young Kaiyakesi when he went to destroy the demon Pathutthanta. Now she asks for the truth of it: her son is to receive royal wealth, and your elder brother is driven into the forest for fourteen years. We will preserve our royal father's truth. His kindness bore our heads into birth. Let this be known in the earth. My dear younger brother, do not be angry."

Then Phra Lak, the younger brother, laid down the bow and grasped Phra Chakri's hand. He embraced his brother's feet and grieved: "Look, look what the heart of Kaiyakesi can do without thought. Cruel one, she would destroy your life and make my elder brother perish. I ask to offer my life and take revenge on her. Even if the people of great Kaiyaket come to fight with the whole city, I alone will wage war and destroy the whole line. What is lacking, elder brother, that you must go dwell in the forest?"

Then radiant Phra Hariwong, Narai himself, embraced his younger brother and said: "What you say is not needed. Your elder brother will help uphold truth; it is not fitting to love kingdom and estate. If our father breaks his vowed truth, he will be shamed throughout the three worlds. Whatever she does is her doing; no one will call it good. We will keep dharma firm, and this will become honor in the world. Stay calmly; I am about to take leave, beloved younger brother, jewel of my heart." When he had instructed him, he went back to the jeweled palace.

Then Phra Lak, radiant and blessed, grieved and suffered beyond measure. He lamented: "Alas, the mighty lord will suffer alone in the forest. How could I, his younger brother and life-companion, abandon the righteous lord? Even if I remained in the city, how could I look upon that dark-hearted woman? I would not regret losing my life. I will follow my elder brother and be his companion. Poor or hard, we will see one another in the forest." Having thought this, he hurried to the shining great palace.

[Viewing the Market]

He removed his royal ornaments, put on bark cloth as a rishi, tied his topknot, wrapped himself in tiger-skin, and wore a jeweled rosary. His face was bright with sandal-paste. In his right hand he held the bow and arrow. With senses restrained and guarded, he walked to Phra Ram.

Then the lord of the three worlds saw his younger brother Phra Lak ordained as an ascetic and was startled. He said: "Dear younger brother, you have taken this vow. Where are you going? Will you leave our father and mother behind? Who will serve beneath their lotus feet?"

Then wise and brave Phra Lak sobbed as he reported to the Avatara: "May the crown above my head show mercy. If Your Majesty preserves our royal father's truth and endures sorrow in the forest, I, your younger brother, offer my life to the four-armed lord. I will follow and serve beneath your feet in the forest of Himavan. Remaining in the royal city would never bring lasting happiness. Do not be troubled over our royal father or the mother who bore our heads; no illness will harm them while they dwell in the delightful city. Phra Phrot will receive the white parasol and serve them. But Your Majesty will be alone, helpless amid every hardship."

Then wise and brave Phra Chakri heard his beloved brother's words as if immortal nectar had been poured into his heart. "It is not wasted strength, your love for your elder brother. None like you can be found in all the world." Speaking, he embraced his younger brother, while tears gathered on his grieving face.

Sida Joins the Exile

Then fair Nang Sida learned that her royal husband would not rule the delightful city, but had become an ascetic and would go practice austerity in the forest. His younger brother Phra Lak too had taken vows, out of love for his elder brother. Tears filled the lady's eyes; she grieved, anxious and weeping. "Ah, in this moment whom shall I rely on as I rely on my husband? A woman without her husband, even if she has rank, power, and splendor, is not beautiful to the eye in the earth, like a jewel without a golden setting. Better to die than to be parted from the feet of my created royal husband. I will follow him into the forest until my life ends."

Having thought this, she removed the ornaments proper to the beloved chief queen from her beautiful body and took the form of a female ascetic. She left the jeweled couch of Surakan, beautiful as a heavenly woman in splendor, tears covering her eyes, and walked from the adorned chamber.

When she arrived, she bowed before her arrow-bearing royal husband and reported: "Your servant asks to follow Your Majesty."

Then Phra Harirak Chakrakrit heard his chief queen and life-companion. He looked on her face and sobbed with longing. He received her spirit and spoke gently: "Jewel of my heart, highest beloved, if you follow me, hardship and distress will multiply. In the Himavan forest, among the wild woods, all is filled with spirits, demons, ghosts, and harmful beings. Four-footed beasts, tigers, wild rhinoceroses, and lions are there. The road is difficult, crossing ravines, hollows, and streams, full of hardship and danger. Young lady, remain in the city. You will be companion to the royal mother. Beloved one, listen to me. Do not grieve so deeply. When fourteen years are complete, I will return."

Then young, beloved Nang Sida heard as if struck by lightning. The beautiful lady embraced his feet and lamented: "Alas, mighty lord, will you show no mercy to your wife? I left great Mithila to take refuge beneath the dust of the four-armed lord. If you do not show mercy to your servant, kill me first; then go from the moon-palace city. Only then will the sorrow of separation from the lord of royal wealth end. If you leave me here alone, where will I turn my face and whom will I rely on? I no longer have the keeping of my royal father and mother. If I remain, my heart will be wounded. I will follow and serve beneath your feet. If Your Majesty does not take me with you, I will die and not let anyone see my face. Better that than being far from my royal husband. Sky-passing lord, show mercy."

Then the radiant jewel-lord Phra Chakrarat heard the lady lamenting in grief. The king sighed and consoled her, drying her tears. "Jewel of my eyes, do not weep. Since you will not remain in the victorious city, let it be as Your Ladyship wishes. Alas, dear companion in hardship, you will share difficulty with me. What old deed and karma have we made, that this time it has caught us and made us leave the royal city, grieving in the forest?" The three royals grieved as if their lives would end.

When grief had somewhat cleared, the wise crown of the world led the two beloved royals to his younger brother's mother.

Farewell to Samut Thewi

Then beloved Nang Samut saw Phra Lak, Phra Ram, and young Nang Sida dressed as forest yogins. She was startled as if her life would end, and she left the shining jeweled couch to receive them at once.

She asked the royal sons: "Why have you come wearing ascetic vows as rishis, all three radiant ones? Your mother is confused and doubtful."

Then wise Phra Chakri bowed and reported: "Beautiful Mother Kaiyakesi has said that our royal father commands your son to take the form of a forest ascetic, go perform austerity in Himavan for fourteen years, and give Phra Phrot the royal wealth, the white parasol, and the honor of ruling the people as crown of the great city. As for Phra Lak, my younger brother, and beloved Sida, both are grieving and will go as companions with me into the forest. Please tell my mother that this son asks leave to go first. If I wait to bow and take leave, my body grows hot with fear of the royal penalty. May Mother remain in growing happiness and not waste away in grief. If your son's merit does not die, he will return to bow beneath your lotus feet."

Then young, beloved Nang Samut heard and burned as if in black fire. The lovely lady beat her breast and lamented: "Alas, Kaiyakesi would deliberately kill life. She can do this with an unrighteous, dark, and deluded heart. Alas, Sida, my beloved dear one: though your husband and the younger brother must walk through the forest, they are mighty men with power. I am not as anxious for them as I am for you, beautiful one. You are the highest of women, and have never traveled on foot. You have only worn garments fine as gold; now you would suffer walking in the rough forest, pushing through reed, grass, and cutting blades against your body. Listen to your mother; do not go. Stay with me, beloved child. Your husband will return in fourteen years."

Then lovely Sida heard and bowed at her feet. The beautiful woman answered: "Your Majesty's mercy and kindness deserve to be placed above my head. Yet if your child remains in the city, there will be only suffering forever, because my heart will waste away far from the feet of my created royal husband. Though hardship comes in the forest, I will strive to follow the mighty lord. If sickness or danger comes, I will serve him with faithful honesty. If I die, I will not regret my life. Let the ten directions know that I was faithful."

Then beautiful Nang Samut heard her daughter-in-law's words. The queen sighed and could not restrain grief. Tears poured down in rows. She embraced Sida and lamented as if life would end.

When her grief had cleared a little, she spoke to Phra Lak: "Jewel of your mother's eyes, beloved one, you will go as your brother's companion in the forest. Guard them carefully. Keep the victorious sword and bow near your body. If battle comes, die before your elder brother. As for beautiful Queen Sida, think of her as your beloved mother. May the three of you go in stability; may your great power be famed throughout the three worlds. May every enemy among the yaksha hosts be unable to stand before my children. In fourteen years return to rule the city and continue the imperial line. Receive your mother's blessing as a great auspicious welfare."

Then the three radiant royals bowed their heads to receive the royal mother's blessing, raised joined hands, and walked away.

The Palace Follows Them

Then nurses, foster-mothers, selected attendants, and male and female servants of the three departments saw the divine-line royals depart. All were startled and ran after them, unable to restrain tears because of love. Some embraced the feet of the three royals; some walked after them weeping. "Alas, lord above our heads, your kindness has always sheltered us. We have lived happily at every time. Will you flee us and walk in the forest? From now on, when you vanish from sight, we will count days with lament and tears." Each grieved deeply, rolled on the ground, and lay still, losing sense.

Then the three radiant solar-line royals saw the male and female servants grieving and spoke gently: "Remain here in happiness. Do not suffer so deeply in sorrow. Whoever is born in the three worlds is alike impermanent. We will go for fourteen years; it is not as if we will die." Speaking, they walked onward, while all the attendants followed.

When they reached the front of the royal father's palace, the three royals sat down and bowed. Tears filled their eyes, and they sighed in grief and longing: "Alas, crown above our heads, mighty lord, you raised your children from before, never letting anything bring neglect. Morning and evening you taught us without fail, hoping we would continue the solar line in the created imperial house. Past karma has caught us, forcing this separation. From now, when we vanish from sight, it will be like the moon darkened and its light gone. Your child asks leave of the victorious king's feet. May the lord of earth remain in welfare. And to the royal mother who bore our heads into birth: her kindness exceeds heaven and earth, beyond counting. We have not yet repaid even a thread of it, and now must go far away to the forest. If your child does not die, he will return to serve beneath the righteous king's feet." Lamenting with streaming tears and suffering as if death were near, they hardened their hearts and walked together from the palace of Surakan.

The three royals turned and looked back at the great palace and royal residence. They saw the three vast palaces, more beautiful than Indra's heavenly mansions. Phra Ram said to his younger brother Phra Lak: "Alas, we must leave all this. All the wealth throughout the land, in every city, has no equal. I regret the whole field where we practiced the bow, where we trained our hands and troops, tested horses, chariots, and elephants, and learned every science. I regret Ayutthaya city, joyful as a great heavenly place, lively every day with never-ending festivals. Now we will hear only the sounds of animals: lions, deer, birds, and all the rest. I regret the shining jeweled chamber, bright with lamps. Ah, now I will see only wilderness and the moon and stars moving through the sky. The places where I used to play and delight, I will abandon and travel far. For fourteen years I will endure suffering, with no happiness as before. I pity my royal mother; she will burn over her child at every moment. Alas, now I will be far from you, jeweled palace where I once found joy, and from the royal line and loyal servants." As he lamented, Phra Chakri went onward.

Then Phra Wasis and Phra Sawamit, the great teachers, with the company of forest rishis, the people, ministers, and warriors, looked out and saw the three solar-line royals wearing topknots and ascetic garb. All were shocked and thrown into tumult, and the whole city roared. The great Sawamit and learned Phra Wasis felt doubt in their souls, and some of them went out together.

When they reached Phra Chakri, they asked: "Why are you dressed in vows like this? What cause and course has led to your not ruling the royal city?"

Then Narai incarnate, skilled in war, heard the restrained sages. He raised joined hands and told the matter from the beginning: "This nephew went up to attend his royal father, but could not meet him. Kaiyakesi barred the way and said she had received my father's command: I am to become an ascetic, go practice austerity in the forest, return after fourteen years, and leave the city today. Phra Phrot is to rule the city and continue the splendid imperial line. Phra Lak and Queen Sida have grieved deeply and taken vows to come with me, as companions in the great forest. Great teachers, remain at ease. Your nephew takes leave now."

Then the two great rishis considered Phra Chakri's words and saw that they fit the purpose of his descent. They were glad that he would go subdue the demons, yet pitied him for having to walk in the forest. "This time the violent asuras will die by the power of the four-armed lord." Having thought this, they stopped Phra Hariwong: "Nephew, stay here a little. Your grandfathers will go make you meet the king." Having instructed him, they hurried away at once.

When the two ascetics arrived, they saw radiant King Thotsarot with Queen Kausuriya grieving on the bed. They spoke and asked: "What is this, supreme lord? You were to give Phra Ram the royal wealth, yet now you grieve."

Then King Thotsarot heard the great ascetics. He bowed and spoke: "I am full of grief and longing because of Kaiyakesi. She deliberately seeks to destroy my life and end my existence. She raises the truth from when I went to slay Pathutthanta the yaksha. She wants her child to rule in heavenly wealth; her words are coarse beyond the heart. She drives Phra Ram from the city, and I cannot delay even until dawn. I am shamed before all the people of the victorious city. I long to kill her, cut open her breast, and take out her heart to slice it, fitting the face of that dark-deluded woman. Yet I regret breaking truth and losing dharma; the three worlds would condemn me. For this reason, teachers, I would rather lose my life and not be humiliated by the violent ones before heaven and earth."

Then the two great rishis heard King Thotsarot's words and were shocked. They loved and pitied him beyond wisdom, almost unable to hold back tears. Moved with pity and longing, their hearts burned like fire. They turned and spoke gently: "Kaiyakesi, consider the king's kindness. The lord who bears the earth loves you as his eyes. Do not act like an evil jealous person. You have gained the royal wealth in Ayutthaya according to your desire. Do not make Phra Ram suffer, enduring misery in the great forest. Your royal husband will die; where will anyone find his equal?"

Then fair Kaiyakesi heard and answered: "This matter is not the business of teachers. Whether good or bad, let it be. Who invited you to come speak? This is not your affair to take up as your own. It is not your place or rank to speak. You have invaded the inner chamber; who invited the rishis here? You have no proper tact. Have you done well, holy men?"

Then the two great ascetics heard the lady's tasteless, coarse, and violent speech, beyond thought. They said: "What is this, queen? We speak for good, yet you make it wrong. The king who bears the ten royal virtues has kindness like the father who raised you. Is it fitting to think crookedly in corruption, betraying with a coarse and sinful heart, killing your husband without fearing karmic consequence? Who will count the face of such a base person?"

Then beloved Kaiyakesi was wounded by the teachers' words and answered stubbornly with violent speech: "You are ascetics, yet do not remain in the ascetics' place. You dare speak with delusion. The promise was vowed between us; will you make it confused and stained? Is this how you set yourselves up as perfected beings, unable to know right from wrong? Hurry away. If you remain, you will trouble me. No one is listening to your words."

Then radiant King Thotsarot heard and was angered even more. He could not kill or beat her, and so he raised joined hands in homage to the two great teachers: "Why speak to her? This wretched ill-starred woman speaks coarsely beyond thought. I am wounded in heart as if struck by a discus. To live will wound my heart because of this base, deformed woman. On the day Phra Ram leaves the city, my body will end. I will be born in a divine mansion. Teachers, remain at ease. As for this corpse of mine, do not let that dark woman touch it. Do not let mother or son come to light the fire. I give this command as truth." Speaking, the mighty king sighed, grieving deeply. He lowered his face in sorrow as if his life would end.

Then the two great rishis heard the king, lord of the earth, grieving and lamenting, entrusting his corpse and giving command as truth. They were so sorrowful they could hardly endure it; tears filled the eyes of the holy ascetics. They answered the king's command: "Your Majesty should help sustain the world. To die in such grief is not fitting. From the beginning, the Five Forms were sent to invite Phra Harirak Chakri to descend and cool the ten directions by ending distress. At the age when he will go destroy the violent ones, he must walk in the forest for fourteen years. Then he will return to rule the wealth and continue the radiant imperial line. It is not as though his life will end. May Your Majesty reflect on this."

Then the royal father of Narai heard and gave command: "I know already, teachers. Phra Ram is meant to end distress and make every place cool and happy. But this is not yet the fitting time for him to go subdue demons. It would be right for him to enjoy royal wealth first, increasing welfare, happiness, and splendor. Then he would go subdue the asuras according to Vaikuntha's plan. But this woman is jealous and treacherous and would make me shamed in every direction. I am beyond shame, anger, and thought. Though I have life, I do not want it."

Then the wise and brave sages heard King Thotsarot's words and could no longer restrain or oppose him. "Alas, Kaiyakesi can go so far as this: worse than all women in the three worlds, deliberately killing her husband so that he dies, seeing only the gain of royal wealth. Is it fitting to cut off love?" Having said this, they descended from the bright jeweled palace.

When they reached Phra Ram, they told him the matter: "The two of us went inside and saw your royal father and mother, the two royals, grieving and weeping. The king said that the day you leave the victorious city, his life will end. We pitied the lord of earth and pleaded with Kaiyakesi, but she answered with such coarse speech that no reply was possible."

Then the jewel-lord Phra Chakrarat heard the two perfected sages, and his chest burned like age-ending fire. Tears flowed in streams over his face. He loved them, grieved, and pitied them beyond measure, as if his life would depart. The sky-passing lord lamented.

"Alas, my royal father and the royal mother who bore my head. Your kindness exceeds heaven and earth, and now I must go away from you. From now, far from your feet, it is as if the sun has turned behind a mountain edge. Out of gratitude I will endure walking in the forest and care nothing for my life. I was born and have not repaid your nourishing care. Still, at least I have bowed farewell; bowing at the feet has cooled my heart. I have no thought or wisdom left to delay or hold back even a day. Ah, what can I do? I am helpless beyond measure. Wasted is the strength of being born in the solar line, the shining imperial house of power. See what the wretched ill-starred one has done." Phra Chakri lamented as he grieved.

Then he hardened his heart and extinguished longing. He raised joined hands above his head and took leave of the great perfected sages. The three royals went together.

Sumanthan Follows the Exiles

Then Sumanthan, the chief minister, grieved as if his heart would break, longing for Phra Chakri. There was no fourfold army; only the three royals had to walk in the forest, suffering hardship beyond measure. "I will go serve beneath the feet of radiant Phra Narai." Having thought this, he mustered warriors and yoked the splendid jeweled chariot.

When it was ready, he set the warriors in motion and drove the shining chariot of Surakan. Each person grieved and longed, and they hurried after the lord.

When they reached him, he reported to Phra Hariwong: "I invite Your Majesty to mount the victorious chariot. I will follow Phra Chakri until my life ends."

Then radiant Phra Phitsanurak heard Sumanthan the minister and invited young Phra Lakshmi, beloved lady, and the solar-line younger brother to mount the jeweled pearl chariot. Sumanthan, wise minister, sat crouched in homage at the rear of the chariot. The charioteer drove the noble horses, swift as a windstorm. The warriors crowded in ranks and followed along the road.

Then all the people and subjects saw the three solar-line royals dressed as forest ascetics, riding the jeweled chariot with warriors surrounding them until the earth shook. Everyone was startled, and all were in noisy confusion. The palace servants of the three departments were deeply troubled, filled with grief and sorrow, crowding and pressing together as they followed Phra Chakri.

Then the chariot driver drove the jeweled chariot out to the city gate. The gods moved his heart so that he went south, straight toward the island of victorious Lanka, so the unrighteous would be slain.

Then created Phra Ram of the solar line saw all the people and subjects following in confusion. He spoke gently: "Sumanthan, elder minister, why do the ministers, servants, and people of all the victorious city follow us like this? Who will serve beneath the feet of my royal father, the king? Have them return into the city. I will take leave of them and go."

Then thoughtful Sumanthan bowed and answered the king: "May Your Majesty show mercy. If you send me back to the royal city while the mighty lord goes to the forest, your royal father will become furious and punish me heavily. Besides, it would be as if I were not loyal and faithful beneath your feet. I ask to follow Your Majesty until my life ends."

Then the lord of the three worlds heard wise Sumanthan and did not answer. He ordered the chariot driver to drive the horses mightily, hurrying the royal chariot along the forest road.

They passed open fields, forests, river landings, and streams. When they reached the garden of Suan Khwan as the sun was setting, the righteous lord had the victorious chariot stopped.

Each person grieved in longing, troubled and sorrowful. The gods caused the warriors to fall asleep, wholly lost to sense.

Then radiant Narai of the solar line sat above the jeweled chariot, filled with trouble and longing. Thinking of his royal mother and father, he lowered his face and wept until the first watch had passed. He did not enter sleep. When he saw that the whole company slept soundly, his heart grew glad. He invited the two royals and stepped down from the chariot at once.

They walked softly and slipped away from the troops in secret, entering the wooded mountain forest like royal lions walking onward.

[Viewing the Forest]

They traveled through the forest ways, and the mighty lord looked at the kinds of trees arranged along the road on both sides. Flower buds opened their petals. Pollen fell and scattered sweet fragrance; the scent spread in fullness. Moonlight shone clear over the forest rock. The wind blew softly and gently. Dew fell in mist, cold and seeping into the body of the arrow-bearing lord. Rabbits jumped and nibbled the grass; birds flew in confusion, calling and singing, offering their voices. Their notes were beautiful through the great forest, and cicadas sang in long threads, as if deliberately easing grief and heat. The lord pointed out flower clusters and pollen to the lady. Phra Lak plucked blossoms and offered them to the beautiful queen. Phra Hariwong plucked sao-yut flowers and gave them to the noble lady, soothing her spirit. The three royals walked gracefully onward and passed beyond the border post.

Then honored Sumanthan, when dim dawn and the sun's light appeared, startled awake from the victorious chariot. He parted the golden curtain and looked, but could not see the lord there. Phra Lak and Nang Sida too were gone. His life seemed ended from shock. Then he thought and understood that the three royals had deliberately fled so the troops and ministers could not follow. He had to return to the palace and tell the royal father clearly. Having thought this, he commanded the troops that the lord would return to the city.

Then all the warriors who had followed did not know Sumanthan's stratagem. They thought the lord would return to the great city, and each was happy in heart. They laughed, called to one another, and raised hands to honor the four-armed lord. The palace servants of the three departments rejoiced, and some offered victory-blessings, glad that their suffering and heat had ended.

Then thoughtful Sumanthan drove the jeweled chariot back into the city.

Then the men and women of the city saw the chariot driven back and rejoiced with all the warriors. They assumed the mighty lord had returned into the splendid royal city. Each was glad and delighted, and they ran after the chariot with loud noise.

Then young and beloved Nang Samut, still grieving and burning in her bright jeweled chamber, heard that the three royals had returned to the royal dwelling. Doubtful, she gathered all the palace women and hurried there.

When she reached the victorious palace of beloved Kaiyakesi, she went straight into the sleeping chamber to hear the matter of the king.

Then Sumanthan, minister skilled in war, when he came into the royal city, stopped the horses and warriors.

Thotsarot Dies

Then King Thotsarot and lovely Kausuriya, the two royals, were grieving in the bedchamber, thinking of their beloved royal son, who had left the royal city. Hearing the loud noise, the righteous king wondered in doubt. He looked through the window and saw Sumanthan, the elder minister. He gave command and asked: "Why have you come, minister?"

Then honored Sumanthan bowed his head and grieved as he answered the king's command: "The two glorious royal sons, together with the beautiful daughter-in-law, yesterday took vows as yogins and went into the forest. I followed beneath their feet to Suan Khwan garden. When night was clear with moonlight, they went away in secret. I cannot think where to search or where they have gone. My fault deserves the end of life. May the lord of earth show mercy."

Then radiant King Thotsarot heard as if his life would end, and the king lamented.

"Alas, my beloved child, jewel of your father's eyes and delight of my heart. From now we will not see one another; each day you will vanish farther from sight. Because of Kaiyakesi, who is my great enemy, father is slain and child is driven far away to walk in the hard forest, suffering hardship, with only fruits for food. At night you will sleep in misery on the bare earth. Wasted is the strength of your Vaikuntha birth into the line of a universal emperor. I cherished, nourished, and upheld you, intending to make you crown of the world. If I sought a jewel as large as a mountain, perhaps I could find it. If I wanted the moon and stars in the sky, I think I could obtain them as I wished. But to find a son like you: even if I die and am born again, there will be none. I thought to entrust my life to you until my days ended, but my desire is not fulfilled, because that cruel woman has come to destroy me. She is one of the servants of Death, deliberately striking down her father's life. If I die and you see my heart, then it is no matter." Lamenting, he stretched out in grief, breath choked and body shaking. His voice ended; his breath ended. Consciousness broke and passed away, and he was born in the Tusita heaven.

Then Queen Kausuriya, Queen Samut Thewi, and the palace women and attendants saw that the king's life had ended. Each was terrified and without spirit. They grieved deeply and lamented in love for the king.

Kausuriya said: "Alas, lord who ruled the whole world, none like you can be found. Is it fitting that you die and flee your little servant to the heavenly city? Your kindness was like a royal father's; under it my head was cool in supreme happiness. From this day you will be hidden from my eyes, and I will have only sorrow. Ah, my breast! It is not enough to be parted from my child; now the crown above my head has died too. I will suffer through every night and day; every kind of grief will bring me shame."

Nang Samut said: "Alas, lord above my head, whose power shone like the sun, pillar of the earth and world, by whom the whole universe had no distress. From this time onward there will be suffering, with no happiness as before. Morning and evening we once attended the king in delight and joy. What karma forces me far from the feet of my royal husband? When I eat, I will eat only tears; my suffering will multiply beyond measure."

The palace women said: "Alas, lord above our heads, crown at the king's feet. Your kindness exceeds heaven and earth, beyond what we can lament. You were not unrighteous or partial. You raised us to happiness and welfare; silver, gold, jewels, rings, and garments were shared to all alike. To find one like the mighty king in all three worlds and all directions is impossible." Lamenting and grieving, the inner women seemed about to lose their lives.

Then the two teachers, powerful in meditation, Sumanthan the minister, and the officials and ministers inside and outside learned that the king had gone to heaven. Each grieved, sobbed, and wept. They followed the perfected sages up to the shining jeweled palace.

When they reached the jeweled chamber of Surakan, the two radiant teachers had fragrant water, rich with spreading scent, placed in a jeweled basin and used to bathe and cleanse the body of the supreme royal lord. They adorned him with splendid royal dress according to the funeral of a great universal emperor. When this was done, they invited him into a jeweled urn and set it beneath the white parasol above a splendid golden jeweled throne, with high regalia shining in ranks. The sixty-four thousand palace women grieved loudly, and the musicians played without ceasing, every moment.

The Exiles Reach the River

Then Phra Harirak, lord, with lovely Sida and beautiful younger Phra Lak, had traveled from night until the sun shone bright. They passed beyond villages and forest borders and entered the deep woodland.

After many nights of hot travel, they reached the bank of a great broad river named the Satong Ganga. Its water flowed deep beyond measure. The three royals stopped to rest beneath the shade of a vast banyan tree, thinking how to cross the difficult water with raft or boat.
