This is the twenty-first สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Kukhan's meeting with Phra Ram at the Satong river, the crossing to Bharadvaja, Sarabhanga's direction to the forest hermitage, Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut's return to Ayutthaya, their discovery of Thotsarot's death and rejection of Kaiyakesi's plan, and the beginning of Thotsarot's royal cremation.

Translation

Kukhan Meets the Exiles

Now I will tell of Kukhan, brave-hearted forest hunter. He lived in Buriram city, ringed round by mountains like a boundary wall. His spirit was rough and fierce, patient in labor and strong in force. He knew no years, months, nights, or days; only when leaves fell did he understand that time had passed. Along the line of the Satong river, no one could come to trample or oppress. He had five koti of followers, all forest hunters, skilled with bows and crossbows. Then he thought in his mind that he would hunt wild cattle and elephants. He dressed himself fully in hunting gear, took up his bow, sprang forward, and hurried away.

When he reached the place where his troop usually gathered, he climbed up into a tree and blew his signal tube. The sound rang and thundered through the forest.

Then his strong hunter followers heard the signal tube. They all ran out in confusion.

Then Kukhan, the great chief, was glad. He came down from the tree and led the forest hunters roaming onward.

They saw herds of wild cattle and deer, bears, antelope, hares, and forest beasts. They shouted until the wild woods rang, chasing the animals through the groves and uplands.

They came to the bank of the Satong Ganga. Looking across, they saw the arrow-bearing lord, together with mighty Phra Lak and the lovely chief queen. They sat beside the riverbank, hair tied in topknots, wearing the form of rishis, splendid as the shining sun and a goddess and godling in heaven. Kukhan crept in to watch, parting the thick leaves and shrubs. He gazed at the three royal beings in wonder until he seemed to forget himself.

Then the forest hunters saw the three royals wearing the form of yogins, lovely in auspicious beauty beyond measure. They gazed on the face of the arrow-bearing lord, more beautiful than the crafted sun. The younger ascetic was beautiful like the bright moon. The female ascetic was beyond all comparison. They crowded and pressed close to look at the lord of earth, never taking their eyes away.

Then Kukhan, the brave-hearted great chief, was moved inwardly to fear the power of radiant Phra Chakri. Through the power of Narai Chakrakrit, reverence and love for the lord's feet filled him. He came in, bowed his head, raised joined hands, and honored the victorious arrow-bearing lord. Then he offered honey, venison, and a large grilled pla krai fish, and asked: "What is your name, my lord? Are you forest people, or do you live in a city? Are you of royal blood, or merchants rich in goods? Why have you come to stay beside the river? I am greatly confused and full of doubt."

Then Phra Narai, mighty lord of the discus, heard the forest hunter ask. He turned his face and spoke: "I am a shoot of the solar line, son of King Thotsarot, named Rama, of Ayutthaya the royal city. This lovely woman is named Sida, my chief queen and heart's beloved. My younger brother, mighty in power, is named Prince Phra Lak. My royal father was about to give me the white parasol, to continue the line of universal emperors. My stepmother asked him to keep his truth, so that her own son might rule the city. I am preserving my royal father's word; therefore I left my state and took vows as a rishi. I will dwell in the forest for fourteen years, and then return to the victorious city. What is your name, hunter-chief? Where is your home? Have mercy and help us go across to the farther bank of the river."

Then Kukhan the forest hunter heard the royal command and felt deep longing for Phra Chakri. "Alas, prince of the emperor's line, supreme above the kings of every splendid city. You once lived in a royal capital, happy and at ease. Surely old karma from former times has come, so that you must leave the palace and walk in the forest. It is pitiful to see." Speaking, he bowed at the lord's feet. "Sky-passing lord, do not cross the river. Stay with me, your faithful servant, so that I may guard and protect you. My name is Kukhan. Let me serve beneath the feet of the lord of earth."

Then the arrow-bearing Phra Kritsanurak heard the forest hunter plead, and answered with gracious words: "I thank you. But as for staying here, so near the royal city, I cannot remain. People will come and crowd about; how could I walk in meditation and practice? I must go to a quiet, hidden, dry place, fit for forest rishis, and there build my vow and conduct in peace and happiness."

Then Kukhan, brave forest hunter, heard those sweet words. Pity shook him and he sighed, for he loved the lord's feet with utmost love and could not oppose him. He ordered his forest-hunter followers to hurry and bring the boat.

Then the forest soldiers heard their chief's order, rejoiced, and ran out in haste.

When they reached the boat they moved in confusion, some poling, some rowing in a crowd. They brought it to rest beside the water-landing and waited for the sky-passing lord to come.

Then Kukhan, hunter-chief and fighter, reported to the mighty lord as the king would cross the water: "I will take the three royals of the solar line to meet the rishi named Bharadvaja Muni, who dwells on the farther bank of the river."

Then Phra Chakrarat, jewel-lord and refuge, heard and was glad. He invited the two beautiful royals and came out from the shade of the banyan, lovely as gods had shaped him. The three moved with graceful hands and steps, following one another down into the boat.

Then Kukhan the forest hunter ordered the boat pushed off and brought out, crossing the great river's water.

Then radiant Phra Hariwong, with Phra Lak and Queen Sida, crossed through the water. The sun wore a halo and veiled its rays softly. The wind blew the boat onward, and the four-armed lord looked at the fish in the river.

They swam in groups, paired and touching, seeming to follow the current's line: pla ma, twisting pla la, pla si siat, and salumphon; nualchan and chanthramet drifting; golden barb fish mingling in pairs; pla krai swimming and parting the water. The four-armed lord pointed them out and invited the lady to look. Sawfish circled among sharks; nuea-on, phruan, and phram fish followed in pairs; black-cheeked fish went down into the river; rahu and human-faced sea beasts moved there. Dolphins rose and spouted water; kradueng, phruan, and comb-fish tangled together; makara turned and chased in circles; merfolk swam among whales. All the fish in the river hurried along the splashing waves, as if helping to send the Avatara onward until he reached the far bank.

Then Kukhan, brave-hearted forest hunter, reached the bank and spoke, ordering his hunter soldiers: "All of you remain here. Watch the head of the road. If enemy kings or foes come, fight even at the cost of life, and do not let them pass." Having ordered them, he invited the three royals to the main road, and Kukhan the forest hunter led the lord of earth onward.

Then the arrow-bearing lord of the solar line, with Phra Lak and lovely Sida, moved gracefully along the road.

Then Kukhan, brave-hearted forest hunter, led the three royals onward until they reached the hall of the holy teacher.

Then the world-ruling lord who could subdue every world invited the two young royals to enter and bow before the muni.

Bharadvaja Directs Rama

Then the rishi Bharadvaja saw the forest hunter leading Phra Chakri toward him, together with young Phra Lak and beloved young Sida, children of King Thotsarot. His soul was confused and he stood amazed, thinking: "Why is it like this? Has the great city been lost? That seems wrong. What hostile band or enemy could withstand his might?" Having thought this, he spoke: "Look, radiant Phra Ram. Why do you wear the form of a yogin, leave the royal city, and walk in the forest? Only the three of you suffer such hardship; there is no fourfold army with you. What cause lies at the beginning and end of this matter? My doubt is beyond measure."

Then wise and brave Phra Chakri told the holy teacher the whole matter from the beginning to the end. "I accepted my royal father's truth, left my royal form, took vows as a forest ascetic, and came out to practice meditation until the fourteen years are complete."

Then the rishi Bharadvaja heard and felt greatly moved with pity. He spoke gracious words: "You have accepted your royal father's truth, child, proud as a lion king. Your glory will be known and spread abroad, stable and auspicious. Stay here in this hidden place. You will be happy, with water and fruits; caves and hermitage are fitting, and nothing will be lacking, my royal grandson."

Then the royal lord, crown of the world, heard the great siddha and answered: "As for staying here, holy one, I would have no peace, because this way is near the victorious city. How could I build my vow? I ask leave from the feet of the great ascetic to go to the mountain of Himavan, endure, and increase meditation." Then he commanded Kukhan: "You of the forest-hunter line, return to your city and live in happiness and ease."

Then Kukhan, faithful in heart, heard the mighty lord. He bowed and reported with devotion: "I ask to serve beneath the feet of the radiant lord of the three worlds. I will patrol the forest roads. If any foe follows, I will resist their strength, not thinking of my body, until life and breath are spent." Speaking, he bowed down at Phra Chakri's feet, took leave, and returned.

Then Bharadvaja, the great teacher, heard those words and felt longing for the three royals of the solar line. He recited sacred spells and gave consecrated water for them to bathe, blessing them: "May victorious power be yours in battle. May your majesty be supreme through the three realms."

Then he raised his hand and pointed out the road: "To the right, toward the south, is a hidden and peaceful place, a great forest with tall trees and close shade. The road is six and a half yojanas. You will reach the siddha Sarabhanga. He is skilled in power, restrains his mind, and practices meditation."

Then the lord of the three worlds, subduer of every world, with Phra Lak and Sida, bowed and received the blessing with joy. They worshiped, took leave of the great ascetic, fixed the direction of the road and hill, left the forest hut, and went along the woodland way.

They saw a hermitage at the foot of a cliff, beneath the shade of a great asoka tree. The three royals went in together and bowed before the great ascetic.

Then Sarabhanga the ascetic saw the son of King Thotsarot come in and bow with joined hands. He spoke gracious words: "Look, radiant Phra Ram. I knew the day you would wear vows as a yogin, and therefore I hurried here. Thinking you would have no dwelling place, I built this hall to wait for you. Stay here, build your vow and conduct, and make meditation firm."

Then Phra Chakrakrit, mighty arrow-bearing lord, bowed with joined hands and answered graciously: "The revered elder has shown mercy; your kindness should be placed above my head. But my soul would not be at ease, because this is still near the city. I think Phra Phrot will not listen to his mother, but will follow and plead with me even here. May Your Majesty remain in welfare. I, your grandson, ask leave from the holy teacher."

Then the wise and brave muni, longing for the Avatara and full of pity, did not wish to let him go. He said: "I speak from love. I wished you to stay near me. Since you say your heart would not be at ease, I will tell you a place where you may dwell happily. Behind Satkut mountain there is a hall in a hidden place. The gods came down and made it. The ground is clean and fitting. Areca nuts, roots, water plants, mountain lotuses, and fruits are all delicious there. The road runs five yojanas to it; a nonthri tree marks the place."

Then Phra Kritsanurak, divinely made, heard the great holy man indicate the forest hut. He invited young Phra Lak and the chief queen, bowed farewell to the great muni, and went along the road.

They walked among the mountain gaps, and the four-armed lord looked on the kinds of trees: pradu thick with flowers, ylang-ylang and champa mingled together, bunnak, lamduan, sao-yut, lotus, sukhon, and nom sawan, phikun, saraphi, jasmine woods, khan song, roses, champi, phutthachat, layered rak, sonklin, inthanin, chong-nang, nang khli, nang yaem, orchids, maluli, yi-sun, yothaka, and chaba in bloom, kannika, ket kaeo, kalong, prayong, and fragrant phayom. As they admired them, the Avatara plucked golden flowers and gave them to the young woman. Phra Lak plucked karaket blossoms and offered them to the chief queen, his sister-in-law. The three royals, happy in spirit, went onward along the forest road.

They crossed ravines, streams, caves, and forest dwellings, and reached splendid Satkut mountain. Looking, they saw the nonthri tree at the foot of the mountain. Then they saw the hermitage at the mouth of the cave, just as the great ascetic had said. Fragrant trees grew there with sweet fruits, and the glorious lord entered the hall.

There they set up the fire altar, restrained their hearts in the form of forest ascetics, and the three royals practiced meditation every day and every night.

Phra Phrot Returns to Ayutthaya

Then the four horse captains reached Kaiyaket city and entered the royal hall.

They bowed their heads and reported to the two royal sons, Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut: "Your righteous royal father will give the heavenly city to supreme Phra Rames, making him crown of the splendid royal city. He sent us to invite the dust beneath your feet to Ayutthaya."

Then both younger brothers of Narai's lord learned that their royal father would give the city to the four-armed lord. Each was joyful and glad. They left the noble jeweled seats and walked to attend upon their royal grandfather.

When they reached him, they bowed and reported to the supreme lord: "Now our royal father will give the heavenly kingship to Phra Hariwong, lord of the discus, making him the crown and pillar of the world. Your beloved grandsons ask leave from the lord of earth to go to Ayutthaya city."

Then radiant King Kaiyaket heard his grandsons and was glad. He spoke: "Hurry and go in time for the matter. Bow and tell your royal father that your grandfather gives a blessing of welfare."

Then Phra Phrot and radiant Phra Satrut bowed with joined hands and came to the shining jeweled palace.

When they arrived, they spoke to the great ministers: "Prepare the mighty host. We will go to the splendid city of Ayutthaya."

Then the honored ministers received the command, bowed, took leave, and hurried out at once.

They arranged horses, chariots, elephants, and the fourfold host. The chariot captains mounted jeweled chariots, the horse captains mounted steeds, the elephant captains mounted elephants, each beast brave and skilled in war. Foot soldiers dressed in splendor, holding javelins firm in hand. The vanguard held red-barreled guns, powerful and strong. Behind them were archers holding bows, their arrows steeped and soaked in poison. Another rank held swords and shields, with Khmer-wrapped heads and daggers at the waist. They also prepared a shining jeweled chariot to wait for the two mighty lords.

Then Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut, arrow-bearing lords, when the light of the noble sun dawned, moved gracefully to bathe in the river.

They cleansed and bathed their bodies, took delight in perfumed water and flowers, put on splendid trousers and different patterned cloths. They wore gold-patterned garments, breast ornaments, necklaces, jeweled chains, armlets shaped like transformed nagas, and diamond rings shining bright. Each wore a crown, ear ornaments, jeweled earrings, and flower ornaments. They took their bows and fastened their swords, walking gracefully with royal hands. Beautiful and worthy of the emperor's line, they came to mount the splendid jeweled chariots.

The two royal chariots had wheel-rims adorned with pearls. Their pavilions were all coral and gems, three-tipped and blazing with banner-flags. They were yoked to restless noble horses, stepping and displaying themselves with shining grace. The charioteers held whips and drove swiftly as the wind. Every kind of royal insignia was there: sun-shades, yak-tail fans, and peacock parasols. The mustered escort was dense and crowded. Gongs and drums called in blended sound; curved horns and western trumpets pressed their voices together until the sound shook and rolled. The vanguard led the army forward into the mountain forest.

All the birds in the trees along the road became strange omens. The signal flags, victory flags, and chariot flags no longer seemed to wave. When they passed beyond the outpost of Kaiyaket city and entered the territory of splendid Ayutthaya, the subjects and people were not walking about. Music and entertainments were silent as if in the middle of a forest. The princes were confused and doubtful in spirit, and hurried the chariots onward.

They saw the ministers gathered together, with great Sumanthan, all grieving in deep sorrow and unable to hold themselves steady. The princes spoke royal words: "Ministers, all four of you, when the treasure of Phra Chakri is about to be given, why are you grieving?"

Then Sumanthan and the ministers, great and small, lowered their heads, raised joined hands, sighed, sobbed, and reported the matter: "At first your royal father was going to give the white parasol to your elder brother. Then he changed his command, ordering him ordained and sent to dwell in the forest for fourteen years. Lady Sida and radiant Phra Lak loved Phra Chakri and became yogins with him. When he left the city, I followed as far as Suan Khwan. Deep in the night, when moonlight shone, the three royals fled together. I returned and reported to your royal father. He grieved and wept until he went to heaven. Seven nights have now passed. The ministers and people are scorched as if by fire. This happened because of Your Majesty's royal mother; therefore the whole city grieves."

Then Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut, brave in war, learned that their royal father, lord of earth, had reached the end of life. They were startled as if King Death himself had come to strike off their heads. Their hearts burned like age-ending fire; their whole bodies froze in stunned grief. Their eyes darkened in every direction, and their souls sank in pain. "How has our mother come to such base commonness, making the brothers part from the palace and our royal father lose his life? Wasted is our birth together in the Avatara's work; the grief is beyond all words. Enough. We will go attend upon our mother and upon our created elder brother, so that the cause may be known from the beginning." Having thought this, they went together.

When they reached the splendid palace, they saw the two royal mothers weeping with multiplied sorrow. The two brothers bowed down and grieved.

Phra Phrot placed their feet upon his head and said: "Royal mothers, show mercy to my head. Why has our royal father, sky-passing lord, gone to heaven? Where have Phra Lak, the Avatara, and elder sister Sida gone? What has your son done, royal mothers?" He reported this while weeping, unable to hold himself steady.

Then Kausuriya, beautiful royal mother, and Samut Thewi heard his words and were astonished. They said: "Why is this, Phra Phrot? You come grieving and weeping as if your life were about to end, as if you knew nothing from your own mother. Why come ask the matter from us? Why not go first to attend upon your royal mother? You are to rule the city; why suffer so, beloved son?"

Then Phra Phrot, lord of the solar line and bearer of the discus, heard and was deeply confused. Tears covered his face as he reported: "Your son has been away from your feet a long time, and I had no part in any counsel. Only when they came and told me at the victorious city that royal wealth would be given to Phra Chakri did I rejoice and come. Only when I arrived did I learn that Phra Ram had gone walking in the forest, and that our royal father had died because of this mother of mine. Your son's bitterness is fierce beyond measure; therefore I came straight here and bowed at your feet, hoping to ask the royal mothers. Now Your Majesties speak like this, and I am helpless. It is as if the royal mothers have no mercy and see no truth." Speaking, he held their ankles, wept, and sobbed in grief.

Then the two royal mothers spoke by royal command: "Mothers do not speak falsely. On the day when your royal father was to give the white parasol to your elder brother, so that he might uphold the world, your royal mother grew jealous and unrighteous. She asked the king to keep his truth: you were to rule the wealth, and Phra Ram was to be driven into the forest. Your royal father died because of this. The cause was that royal lady."

Then Phra Phrot, radiant and blessed, heard the royal mothers and grieved. He answered: "This ruin that my mother made, your son did not know or see. My heart hurts as if my life would end. How could she do such a thing? She is base, common, greedy beyond measure, ugly and shameful. I am helpless because she is my mother; otherwise my life would be spent. Wasted is the birth by which your son was born into a corrupt womb. I am troubled and ashamed beyond thought." The mighty lord bowed his face down in grief.

Then he reported to both royal mothers: "As for your son's honest heart, do not speak only of Ayutthaya's treasure. Even if the heaven of the gods were given to me, I would not be glad. How could I rule a city before my elder brother? To stay in the palace would be like sleeping in a heap of fire; the three worlds would mock and slander me. Your son asks to bow at your lotus feet and take leave, to follow my elder brother, plead with him, invite him to return, and rule the subjects and people. If I do not find the feet of the arrow-bearing lord of the three worlds, I will not return to the royal city. Royal mothers, show favor."

Then the two royal mothers heard Phra Phrot speak. All doubt left them. They embraced the two beloved sons, pressed their faces together, and wept. "If you follow your elder brother now, who will help with your royal father's funeral? Remain until the cremation is done, and then follow your elder brother. But we think he will not return, because he has accepted his royal father's truth. The two of us mothers will go as well, to help console the arrow-bearing lord. If he will not return to the royal city, we will plead with him not to go far."

Then Phra Phrot, faithful in heart, heard the royal ladies' command and rejoiced. He bowed at their feet: "Your Majesties' mercy and kindness should be placed above my head. Your loving son asks leave to go bow before the royal father's body." Having reported this, he bowed at the lotus feet of both royal mothers, came down from the jeweled palace, and the brothers went together.

When they reached the body of their royal father, they bowed their heads in homage. Each was filled with sorrow and lamented, sobbing in grief. Phra Phrot said: "Alas, crown above my head, whose power once sheltered my head. You nourished your son from childhood; your kindness is higher than heaven and earth. I had not yet repaid the dust of your feet, radiant royal father. My evil, ill-starred mother made the lord of earth go to heaven. My elder brother of the solar line had to be ordained as an ascetic and dwell in the mountain forest. The people are all burning through the victorious city." Phra Satrut said: "Alas, lord of the world, your kindness is beyond all others. You loved your sons as your own heart and let no stain touch them. You stood firm in honest truth; all ten directions took refuge at your feet. Your age was sixty thousand years; you should not have ended life. From now on there will be sorrow, happiness will fade from ease, and darkness will cover heaven and earth like the bright sun turning behind great Meru. Ah, my breast, it is pitiful. Where can I turn my face and find refuge?" The two royals grieved so deeply that they could not hold their senses steady.

Phra Phrot Rejects Kaiyakesi

Then soft-bodied Kaiyakesi learned that her sons had reached the city. She was glad, as if she had gained the sky. She sat waiting, lifting her face, looking from the window and craning for them. Her spirit swelled with secret delight. But when she did not see her son, she was startled. She rose and sat again in confusion, then called hunchback Kuchi close: "Where is Phra Phrot? Go see clearly with your own eyes."

Then hunchback Kuchi, the servant, lowered her head, received the beautiful lady's command, bowed, took leave, and hurried away with the others.

They came to the palace where the royal urn stood and learned that arrow-bearing Phra Phrot had gone to his royal father's body. They hid their faces and watched from afar. Seeing the two brothers press their faces down and weep, Kuchi and the others returned to attend upon the royal lady with delight.

They bowed with joined hands at the feet of the beloved chief queen and reported: "Now your royal son is at the body of the lord of earth."

Then soft-bodied Kaiyakesi learned that the son who shared her life was at his royal father's body. Joy and gladness increased in her heart, and she moved gracefully up to the victorious palace.

When she reached her royal son, she lowered herself and sat near him. Then she spoke by royal command: "My son, heart of your mother, why did you come so late? Your mother has kept her face turned in waiting. Come here and hear the matter. Do not grieve in sorrow. I asked your royal father to keep his truth, so that you would rule the heavenly royal dwelling. You will be great in the line of gods. What your mother desired has come to pass."

Then the younger brother of Phra Harirak Chakrakrit heard as if poison fire had entered and burned his heart. He cried out in proclamation: "Is this fitting? How could you do it? It is shame and disgrace through all three worlds. Whose custom is this? Where has it ever been done, giving the kingdom to the younger brother to rule the city before the elder? And not only this: you drove Phra Chakri to become an ascetic and walk in the forest, until our royal father endured grief and his life ended, and the subjects and people of the whole city grieve, scorched as by age-ending fire. You are a base and ill-starred person. I will end your life." Speaking, he sprang up, drew his sword, and whirled it, meaning to cut her down.

Then mighty arrow-bearing Phra Satrut was startled, afraid his elder brother would kill their mother. He ran in and seized his brother's hand. "Why do this? It will only add guilt. The evil will be evil for an age. Elder brother, think what is fitting."

Then wise and brave Phra Phrot threw away the sword and spoke: "Hey, base woman with a cruel heart. Were you not my mother, your life would end. I will not see the face of one so unrighteous." The angry lord drove her away without mercy.

Then soft-bodied Kaiyakesi saw her son furious as fire. The royal lady was trapped and helpless. She did not know how to answer his words and could not remain before him long. She rose and walked back to her victorious palace.

Then Phra Phrot, lord of the solar line, was full of sorrow held tight in his breast. He grieved and lamented for his royal father, and thought of his elder brother, arrow-bearing lord of the serpent line, with Phra Lak and lovely Sida. His heart burned like age-ending fire. Still more he hated his royal mother and longed to end her life, but he was helpless because he had been born in her womb; the three worlds would care about that. It would become karma, and he did not know what he could do. He rose and sat again, sighing; tears flowed over his face. Phra Satrut of the solar line also grieved in heavy sorrow, suffering as if life would end.

Thotsarot's Funeral Is Prepared

Then the two great rishis, when golden light shone over heaven and earth, entered the royal hall.

Each sat upon a seat made beautiful with shining coverings. The royals of the solar line, the ministers, and the attendants filled the hall in dense ranks. The rishis spoke: "Look, great Sumanthan. As for the body of the lord who ruled the three worlds, he gave command to us two teachers. If we delay now, there is no benefit or substance in it. You are wise and skilled. Arrange the royal cremation ground in full."

Then Sumanthan, diligent minister, received the words of the great holy men, bowed, and hurried out.

When he arrived, he ordered the watch officers to issue levies through the lesser and greater departments: city, palace, treasury, fields, and the interior ministry were all to be ready according to the rule.

Then all the officers in charge acted. The four police divisions inspected in commotion; the left and right recruiting officers gathered people. First-rank, second-rank, third-rank, and outlying towns were all driven in from every place. Crowded, noisy, and confused, each person carried out the assigned duty. Some built the great cremation tower and the directional towers; some raised the shining golden tower. They set royal fences, parasols, banners, and splendid animal figures. Between the platforms were dance-halls, masked plays, shadow plays, and dances of every language. They urged and struck one another on until all was finished according to rule in every part.

Then the two diligent teachers in meditation, when the royal cremation works were complete, ordered Sumanthan the minister to invite the supreme body of the radiant royal lord onto the jeweled chariot and take it to the shining cremation ground.

Then Sumanthan, the great minister, received the command and went with the others to the victorious adorned palace.

They invited the supreme jeweled urn, glittering as if made by gods, and raised it onto the splendid victory car inside the great jeweled pavilion. With it were the bright tow-chariot, the chariot for scattering popped rice, and the chariot of the great holy men. After them came the ordered procession with joined hands, twenty thousand walking in pairs, carrying lotus blossoms and stamens, adorned with royal regalia and yak-tail fans, moving along the royal road.

When they reached the royal cremation tower, bright and shining into the sky, they invited the royal body up onto the splendid platform adorned with jewels. The sixty thousand palace women grieved as if life would end. The two lovely chief queens lamented and longed for their royal husband.

Then all the entertainers, masked play, shadow play, dance, and platform performers, took up their roles and danced in commotion.

Then radiant Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut, with the two royal mothers, the solar-line ministers, and palace attendants, had honored the royal body in great ceremony until the earth shook. When seven nights and seven days had passed, they all gathered to light the fire.

Then soft-bodied Kaiyakesi, her face no longer steady, called Kuchi to her. She had her carry golden incense and candles, sandal powder, perfumes, and flowers. They came down from the jeweled palace, and their attendants went with them.

When they reached the shining cremation tower, she could not look at anyone's face. She went in and sat waiting to light the fire, uneasy in heart, and spoke with Kuchi.

Then the rishis Vasistha and Vishvamitra, when the afternoon had passed by five nati and it was almost time to light the fire, looked and saw low-born Kaiyakesi sitting there with flowers, incense, and candles in her hands. They said: "Look, beautiful one. Are you not ashamed in your soul? At first you asked for the king's truth and drove Phra Ram to walk in the forest, through a deluded heart and desire, so that your son might rule the victorious city. The king kept his truth and did not oppose you; he gave that treasure. But when he begged you over Phra Ram's going to the forest, you did not listen to the royal command. The heat came even to us rishis, and still your speech was base. You did not think that we are teachers. Until the king laid down his life, when he was about to leave the body, he ordered that neither Phra Phrot nor the royal lady should touch the bier or burn the lord of earth. You have come to share in lighting the fire, but we will not let you do it. Hurry away, royal lady, from the adorned cremation tower."

Then beloved Kaiyakesi heard the two siddhas. The lady was helpless beyond thought. She did not know how to answer, trapped because she herself had done wrong. She left the shining cremation tower with her close servant named Kuchi.
