Good Works Translation from Thai
This is the twenty-second สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Thotsarot's cremation, Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut setting out as ascetics to bring Phra Ram home, Kaiyakesi's uneasy pursuit, Kukhan's first suspicion and later help at the Satong river, and the search through Bharadvaja and Sarabhanga toward the cave at Satkut mountain.
Translation
Phra Phrot After the Cremation
Then radiant Phra Phrot heard the words of the muni. He was startled beyond comparison and fell down before the golden cremation tower as if struck by a killing arrow. His eyes grew dark, and he stood stunned, lamenting.

"Alas, wasted is my birth in the created royal line of lords. I was lost and entered the womb of one unrighteous, so that I have been wounded in every way. Shame spreads through all the three worlds. Whose face can I look upon? Because I was far from my father's feet, my evil mother brought ruin on me as well. If I had stayed to serve and uphold the feet of my royal father, how would his life have ended, sending him to the heaven of the gods? He gave up his life, but I did not come in time to see his heart. Even when his royal body is laid down, I cannot offer the fire. All this began because that low-born one angered his feet, so that he ordered the rishis. Your son has done no wrong, yet it has come to this. It is pitiful." Lamenting, he wept until tears streamed. His grief was like a broken heart. He sighed and sobbed, pressed his face down, and grieved.

Then Phra Satrut, lord of the solar line, with the two royal mothers, the royal family, palace women, and attendants, some carrying fragrant garlands, shining incense and candles, eaglewood, aloe wood, and sandalwood, all raised joined hands together. Each asked pardon and took leave, circling the bright royal urn. They bowed in reverence, lit the fire, offered flame to the lord of earth, and wept.

Then the two great teachers, when the royal body's remains were finished, put out the fire and had a chedi built to hold the relics of the supreme king, according to the custom of radiant universal emperors. When this was done, the two munis returned to the hall.

Then Phra Phrot, lord of the solar line, thought bitterly of his royal mother and suffered grief beyond measure. "Alas, poor me. I seem deformed by delusion. Wasted is my birth in the line of gods, for I entered the womb of an ill-starred woman. This evil will cling and never disappear. I am ashamed before the gods in every quarter. My royal father has lost his life, and my brothers have been parted and gone away. It would be better if I died; to live has no use." The lord grieved in longing until dawn rose over the peak of Yugandhara.

He did not bathe or cleanse himself. He wore only the royal bow and arrows, invited mighty Phra Satrut, and walked into the shining royal hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne, bright and shining with splendor, and ordered wise Sumanthan to prepare soldiers and warriors. "Arrange the victorious royal chariot, and the chariots for the two royal mothers. We will go receive Phra Chakri and bring him back to the delightful city."

Then honored Sumanthan received the command, bowed, took leave, and came out from the royal hall.

He mustered the fourfold host, ten proud and sturdy divisions, choosing only brave and fierce fighters, enduring and bold. They held great spears and throwing spears, shouted in joy until the sound rang, and carried guns and bows in strange display, filling the earth in great excitement. He arranged the splendid royal chariots, yoked with horses of different colors, and the attendant chariots for the ladies. All was done by royal command.

[Viewing the Market]
Then Phra Phrot and lord Phra Satrut each dressed in the discipline of the vow. They marked themselves with powder, tied matted topknots, and wore the form of forest ascetics. They put on emerald rosaries, beautiful as great holy teachers. Then they walked gracefully to attend upon the royal mothers.

When they arrived, they reported to the two royals with glad hearts: "We invite Your Majesties to walk and mount the shining royal chariots."

Then the two royal mothers, both grieving, glanced and saw their sons wearing tiger-skins, hair tied in topknots, in the form of ascetics, like Phra Ram and Phra Lak when they took vows. The ladies were even more shaken and distressed. They embraced their two beloved sons, pressed their faces to them, and wept in sorrow. When the four royals' grief had somewhat cleared, they went together to the chedi.

When they reached the stupa where the royal relics were kept, bright and shining with radiance, each raised joined hands, bowed the head, and lamented in grief. "Alas, crown and lord of the city. Anger came upon you until your life ended. Your power sheltered our heads forever, like a jeweled parasol over the world. All the subjects and people lived in lasting supreme happiness beneath you. From now on you will vanish from our sight, and who will we turn toward for refuge? In the time when Your Majesty protected our heads, death and birth again could not find a lord like you. Alas, was it fitting that you fled away into Tusita heaven? We four, your servants, ask leave to follow radiant Phra Chakri." Lamenting, they grieved as if life would end and they would faint.

When their grief cleared, the royal ladies moved gracefully, lovely as royal swans, leading the throng of women attendants straight to the jeweled mounting platform.

When they reached it, they mounted the chariots like the moon ringed with a halo in the sky. The chariots of the two princes were like chariots of the sun, unstained.

Kaiyakesi Follows
Then lovely Kaiyakesi learned that Phra Phrot had raised the army and was leading the two royal mothers into the mountain forest to receive arrow-bearing Phra Rames, inviting him to return and rule the royal city. Her soul burned even more. "Ah, I cannot stay still. I must follow and ask pardon. Even if Phra Ram is angry, he will consider Phra Phrot's face. My son is faithful unto life. My wrong will be covered and cleared." She called crooked-backed Kuchi and ran after the chariot of the young lady.

She reached Samut Thewi's chariot and held it back, pleading and begging to ride with her. "I will go ask pardon from the Avatara. Young lady, show mercy." Having spoken, she climbed up in confusion, dragging the hunchback servant by the hand. Mistress and servant, faces unsteady, rode together at the rear of the chariot.

Then Phra Phrot, lord of the solar line, and his younger brother Phra Satrut rode together in one great royal chariot. The two royal mothers each rode in a shining jeweled chariot. The palace women, inner departments, and attendants followed in ranks. Subjects and officials of the three departments shouted in joy until the earth shook. The mighty army unfurled and went out from victorious Ayutthaya.

Then honored Sumanthan hurried the chariots and the troops, leading the five royals onward. When the sun's light leaned toward afternoon, they reached the garden of Suan Khwan. He raised joined hands, bowed, and reported faithfully to the righteous lord: "When your supreme elder brother came, he stayed here. At quiet midnight, the three royals slipped away from me."

Then the two brothers, faithful in heart, were filled with grief, longing, and sorrow. They said: "The Avatara, sky-passing lord, took the form of an ascetic and left royal ornaments and rank, walking on his feet. If we ride in chariots, it will seem we do not honor our elder brother." Having spoken, the two royals ordered the army halted.

They stepped gracefully down from the shining chariots and walked on foot into the flower garden.

When dawn had passed, they stayed overnight in the beautiful garden, protecting and guarding their royal mothers so no danger or harm would touch them.

They lowered themselves onto beds, burning with sorrow and grief. "Alas, our elder brother, where have the three gone to dwell together? They will suffer hardship, cutting and pressing through forests and mountain slopes. They will grieve and long, laying only leaves beneath them to sleep. When they eat, they will eat only yams and tubers, losing every pleasure and delight. When they bathe, they once bathed in scented water that spread fragrance, but now they must endure rain and the blazing sun, tormenting their bodies in the forest." Lamenting, the two royals grieved and did not sleep through the night.

When dawn opened its light, shining clear above the splendid mountain peak, and bees circled among the flowers, the princes rose from their beds. They ordered the troops moved, walking on left and right. Sumanthan and the two royals walked in front, leading the soldiers. They passed through fields, mountain hollows, valleys, streams, and ridges, hurrying chariots, elephants, soldiers, and horses along the forest way.

They came to the hermitage of Phra Wasis and Phra Sawamit, the rishis. They halted the strong ministers and troops around the hall. Then they invited the two royal mothers to walk down from the royal chariots, moving gracefully to the ascetics' hall.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet of the two great ascetics. Not seeing glorious Phra Hariwong, the four royals grieved in sorrow.

Then soft-bodied Kaiyakesi, who had ridden on the rear of the jeweled chariot, saw the four royals walk in to bow before the siddhas. Her breast burned as if struck by an arrow. The lovely lady felt still more embarrassed and uneasy; she sighed and thought. If she followed inside, she was helpless because she had wronged the siddhas Phra Sawamit and the great muni Phra Wasis. But to remain still seemed improper. She decided she must go bow to the rishis. Thinking this, she dragged Kuchi and leapt down from the rear of the chariot. The hunchback fell groaning, almost dead, then rose and ran hard after her mistress. Mistress and servant turned and twisted onward, walking to the hall.

When she arrived, the young lady bowed to the teachers. She kept her head lowered and did not lift her face, uneasy and unable to speak, only glancing back toward Kuchi.

Then the rishis Vasistha and Vishvamitra saw the four royals come grieving. They asked: "Look, Phra Phrot of the solar line. Your mother wanted you made great until your royal father died. Why do you not rule the heavenly wealth? Why have you brought the two royal mothers and raised the army into the forest? Why do you yourself wear ordination? What have you come to seek from us?"

Then faithful Phra Phrot sighed, tears gathering on his face, and spoke: "This mother of mine is deformed, ugly, and shameful, worse than all women in the earth. I, your grandson, had no part in her thought. Therefore I have taken vows as a forest ascetic with an honest and faithful heart. I have come to invite the mighty lord; the royal mothers, moved by mercy, have both come out as well, hoping to help plead with our elder brother and have him return to rule the city as a great support of the earth. Where is he staying, holy teachers? Grant mercy to my head. Point out the place where Phra Chakri dwells, and I will lead them there."

Then the two great teachers heard and answered with longing: "Grandson, we thank you, beloved child. You are honest, firm in truth, grateful, and know wrong and right, light and heavy. You are pure, faithful, and full of care, chief jewel of the solar line. As for Phra Ram and his younger brother Phra Lak, with soft-bodied Sida, they left the form of solar-line royals, and the three of them went out from the victorious city. They came before us, beloved grandson. We did not know where they would go. When we arrived at the hall, we did not see the three royals."

Then Phra Phrot, lord of the solar line, heard and burned in his soul, grieving beyond measure. "Alas, the four-armed lord once lived in lasting happiness and ease, and now he has had to walk in the forest, suffering every hardship of the body. I thought he would stay only here, so I invited the royal mothers to come seek him. I did not know he had not stayed with the revered elders. Alas, where will he have gone? Does he think his younger brother will not keep truth? Does he think I love royal treasure, or am deluded with greed and follow my mother? Is that why the sky-passing lord has gone far from the city? Our royal father has vanished, and still this new parting from my brother is added." Lamenting, he cast down his body and grieved with his younger brother.

Then the two royal mothers embraced their two sons and said: "Jewels of our eyes, listen to your mothers. You set your heart on coming out to follow arrow-bearing Phra Ram of the solar line. But to grieve and suffer like this is wrong. Invite the two revered elders to lead you roaming through the great forest. Since they know the places of the woodland, perhaps you will find Phra Chakri."

Then the two radiant brothers heard their royal mothers and their grief eased somewhat. Each bowed at the teachers' feet. "Grant mercy to our heads, to us who endure suffering. Do not let us lose our lives. We two grandsons invite your lotus feet to go after created Phra Ram. We think we will meet him because your kindness leads us."

Then Vasistha and Vishvamitra, great teachers, said: "Grandsons, do not burn in heart. We will lead you and bring you to Phra Chakri." Having spoken, the two siddhas put on the things proper to rishis, left the forest hut, and the four royals followed.

Then Phra Phrot and lord Phra Satrut, when they reached the troops' camp, invited the great holy men to mount the two golden chariots. Flags waved and the army moved. The two royals led in front, and Sumanthan followed.

They hurried the fourfold army past gullies, ravines, cliffs, and mountain slopes. They came down into open fields and reached the line of the forest. They saw the tree-line beside the Satong river.

Kukhan Blocks the Road
Then brave-hearted Kukhan, from the time he left the Avatara, had set a guard at the head of the forest road. He had mustered the forest hunters to patrol back and forth with strict care. When the sunlight rose, he came to the head of the forest road.

As soon as he heard the sound of troops, he climbed up into a tree to look. Looking out, he saw the two royals leading the ministers and army. The beautiful young lords were lovely and full of grace, like Phra Ram and Phra Lak, the two radiant ones. "Surely Phra Phrot has raised an army and come here with a crooked heart. He must be an enemy of Phra Chakrakrit, planning a trick by taking the form of an ascetic. I am the servant of the glorious lord. I will fight to death and not retreat. I will go out and serve by opposing them, destroying and killing them." Having thought this, he blew the signal tube until the loud sound thundered in commotion.

Then the forest-hunter followers heard the signal tube calling them. They shouted to one another at once. Some chewed medicines and rubbed their bodies, laughing in a loud roar. They fastened charms to make their bodies enduring, meaning to meet the enemy without fear. They took bows, crossbows, throwing spears, slings, pellets, and great spears. When they were ready, they hurried through the forest, straight to the signal tree.

When they arrived, they saw the troops filling the forest in a noisy crowd. They were delighted, saying they would strip all their clothes away. Speaking, each man tucked up his garments, fastened them Khmer-style, and wrapped his head. "We are not afraid of this many," they called to all the hunters.

Then Kukhan, brave-hearted great chief, saw his bold servants ready to fight. He clapped his hands loudly, full of gladness, and said: "Surely Phra Phrot is leading the ten divisions as the great chief. You all go split apart and lie hidden in the forest. If I cry, 'Take him, tiger!' rush in and attack together." Having ordered them, he walked out and stood blocking the forest road.

When they drew near, he shouted: "Hey! Who are you, daring to come from where? What is your race, name, and title, that you break through our checkpoint without fear?" Speaking, he raised his bow, roaring fiercely in threat, showing himself grandly, lifting it, baring his teeth, standing firm and staring without blinking.

Then Phra Phrot, lord of the solar line, heard the hunter speak in proud, rough, common words. He cried: "Hey, forest hunter! What is your name, that you boast of bravery? Why come so fiercely to fight? If you have some anger, say it. We are named Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut. We have come following our elder brother Phra Chakraphut, walking along the forest road. Why say we have broken your checkpoint?"

Then Kukhan, the great chief, heard and shouted back: "Do not smear your words upon me. My name is Kukhan. I am of the forest people, ruling Buriram city in vast happiness. You have received the royal city, then schemed by taking the form of a forest ascetic, hoping to deceive Phra Rama, and so you have raised soldiers and troops. I am a soldier of the arrow-bearing Avatara, set to guard the head of the forest road, the boundary of the mountain ridges. This whole army you have raised, I will destroy their lives completely, to satisfy my heart against your treachery and crooked thought toward Phra Chakri."

Then Phra Phrot, lord of the solar line, learned news of his elder brother as if divine water had entered his heart. He spoke sweet words: "Look, great hunter-chief. Do not doubt or resent me. Show mercy. I will come in and ask, and we will speak the matter fully." Having spoken, the two royals walked on, and Sumanthan the minister followed them.

He pleaded: "Look, Kukhan, forest hunter. Do not be suspicious. Let me tell the matter in true and righteous speech. This mother of mine has a foolish heart, common, greedy beyond measure, and deluded, until my royal father lost his life and my brothers were parted and went away. I wished to kill and cut her down, but because she is my mother, I could not do it. Grief nearly brought me to death, and so I raised this mighty army and followed. I have taken the form of one ordained, out of reverence for my elder brother. This is not deceit or trickery. I hope to invite him into the city and have him take the white parasol, continuing the splendid line of emperors. When you spoke the name of Phra Chakri, I was glad beyond measure. Show kindness and do me this good: help bring me to attend upon the mighty lord. You are also a servant of Phra Harirak, and we will see one another's faces from this time onward."

Then Kukhan, faithful in heart, heard and was confused and doubtful. He answered with quick wisdom: "Your Majesty speaks beautifully because you see that I am a forest man. Those called royal-born know how to arrange deceptive speech. If it were true as your words say, then I would lead you to attend at the feet of the radiant lord. But you have come in the order of attack. I do not believe your words."

Then Phra Phrot, lord of the solar line, heard and commanded: "Do not bear resentment or doubt. The powerful lord of the serpent line is like a royal father to me. As for the entire host I have raised, they are not enemies or wicked men. The mothers of Phra Lak and Phra Chakrakrit, the rishis Vasistha and Vishvamitra, and my own ill-starred mother have all followed. All ministers and people will help plead with my elder brother to return and rule the city. This is true in every way."

Then Kukhan, brave-hearted forest hunter, heard those sweet words, and all suspicion ended. He set down the bow in gladness, bowed his head, raised joined hands, and paid homage. Then he reported: "May Your Majesty not burn in heart. I will lead you onward to meet your four-armed elder brother. But first I ask to attend at the feet of Phra Chakri's royal mothers."

Then the two radiant younger brothers of Narai heard and were joyful. They spoke gracious words: "You have done us great kindness through your faithfulness to the arrow-bearing lord. We will bring you to attend upon the royal mothers." Taking Kukhan by the hand, they walked on.

When they reached the chariot of the two royal mothers, they bowed with joined hands raised above their heads and reported: "Your two beloved sons have met Kukhan, the forest hunter. He says he is servant of the Avatara, set as guard over the great road. He has accepted the word and will lead us to meet supreme Phra Chakri."

Then the two royal mothers heard as if divine water had bathed their lovely bodies. They spoke sweet words: "Look, hunter skilled in the forest. We mother and sons have grieved almost to the end of life. Since you have mercy and will lead us to meet supreme Phra Chakrakrit, your kindness is greater than thought, like saving our lives." Having spoken, they gave him clothing, shining jeweled rings, golden trays, water vessels, and every chosen gift in full.

Then Kukhan, brave-hearted forest hunter, bowed his head and received the gifts, glad as if he had gained a flower from heaven. He raised his hands, bowed his head, and reported to the two chief queens: "Your supreme royal son crossed the Satong river. I went and sent him to the great rishi named Bharadvaja Muni, who dwells in the Himavan land. Then I took leave from his feet and came back to patrol and guard the checkpoint. As Your Majesties will cross the river, the way is hard, deep beyond counting, broad, great, swift-flowing, and full of whirlpools, with hostile fish besides. I ask leave to cross and arrange boats, so you may cross the great water." Having reported this, he bowed at the feet of the four royals, took leave, cut through the forest, and came to the meeting-place of the forest hunters.

When he arrived, he spoke to the lesser and greater soldiers: "Phra Phrot has raised a mighty host and come, but this is no wicked enemy. He leads the two royal mothers, grieving as if life would end, hoping to invite the Avatara to return and rule Ayutthaya. All of you hurry. Prepare boats, large and small, at the landing, and bring many fruits and forest foods as an offering."

Then the brave forest-hunter soldiers heard Kukhan's command and ran in haste and commotion.

When they reached Buriram city, they pushed boats down in noisy confusion. They counted five thousand boats, each with its crew. Then they prepared all kinds of goods: roasted meat, large pla krai fish, gourds, wax gourds, watermelons, melons, fruit, honey, yams, and tubers. They loaded the boats in confusion; commoners and chiefs shouted until the sound rang. The five thousand boats pushed out from the landing, racing one another as they hurried downstream.

When they arrived, they stopped and came to rest, layered along every landing. Then they carried the goods up from the boats and piled them beside the great river.

Then brave-hearted Kukhan, skilled in war, had the forest hunters lift, carry, shoulder, and bear the goods onward.

When they reached the chariots of the four royals, he raised his hands, bowed his head, paid homage, offered meat, fish, and fruits, and reported with a glad heart: "As Your Majesties will cross the river, following the lord Avatara, large and small boats have come and are waiting beside the landing."

Then the two royal mothers heard and rejoiced. They ordered minister Sumanthan to take the hunter-chief's offerings and distribute them to the army. When this was done, they invited the holy men to proceed to the river landing.

Then Phra Phrot, arrow-bearing lord of the solar line, reached the bank and had the troops, jeweled chariots, and horses cross over.

Then the soldiers, lesser and greater, took axes and knives and went into the forest, cutting wood and binding rafts in haste.

Some crossed with jeweled chariots and horses; some crossed with brave elephants. They competed to cross the water, and the whole river was in commotion.

Then radiant Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut, when the crossing of the soldiers was done, invited the two royal mothers down into a boat.

They ordered the rowers to turn the boat from the landing. Boats and rafts crowded after them, crossing the far side of the great river.

When they arrived, they invited the two royal mothers to mount splendid chariots adorned with pearls. The teachers Vasistha and Vishvamitra mounted a bright heavenly chariot. The fourfold host was ready, spreading through the great forest. The two royals followed Kukhan into the wooded mountains.

Then Kukhan, bold and fierce, led the four glorious royals of the solar line along the forest road. As they drew near the hall of the rishi Bharadvaja, he bowed with joined hands and pointed out the hermitage of the holy man.

Then Phra Phrot of the solar line heard the forest hunter. He ordered the army stopped outside the hermitage boundary, under the shade of the trees at the foot of the mountain. Then he invited the two royal mothers to walk down from the victorious chariots. Together with the great teachers Phra Sawamit and Phra Wasis, they moved gracefully into the forest hut.

The four royals raised their hands and worshiped the rishi Bharadvaja. The munis Vasistha and Vishvamitra sat in their proper order, rank below rank.

Bharadvaja and Sarabhanga Lead the Search
Then Bharadvaja the ascetic saw the two glorious royals of the solar line and spoke: "Why is it, Prince Phra Phrot, that you, child, have come ordained as a forest ascetic? Why do you not remain to rule the city? For what reason have you all come here?"

Then faithful Phra Phrot raised joined hands and answered: "I have no joy in treasure or royal estate. Therefore I have become a rishi, hoping to invite Phra Chakri back, so that the lord of earth may return to the royal city. I learned that supreme Phra Hariwong, with beloved Nang Sida and mighty Phra Lak, had walked here and taken refuge with the holy man. Where is he staying now? I would go attend at his lotus feet. Grant the fulfillment of my wish, great ascetic; show mercy."

Then the great teacher of powerful meditation heard Phra Phrot's words and saw that all of it was true. He said: "Look, beloved grandson. Your truth and dharma are firm beyond compare. You will be praised and gain victory throughout the world and earth. Phra Lak, Nang Sida, and radiant Phra Chakri came to this forest hut, and I longed for them. I spoke with them, urged them, and pleaded, but the four-armed lord would not stay, saying it was too near the victorious city and he would not be able to set his mind on increasing the vow. Now he has gone to take refuge at the dwelling of the ascetic Sarabhanga, near the foot of Himavan mountain. The road is nine yojanas."

Then Phra Phrot, lord of the solar line, heard the great siddha and his breast burned like age-ending fire. "Alas, the four-armed lord will walk on foot through the forest. I thought he was with the holy man, and so I had Kukhan lead me here, but I have not met the feet of the lord of the three worlds. Does he think his younger brother will not keep truth? Does the sky-passing lord not trust me, and so go far from the city?" Lamenting, he grieved and could not hold himself steady.

Then the rishi Bharadvaja saw Phra Phrot grieving and had mercy. He spoke sweet words: "Look, beloved grandson. Do not grieve so heavily. I will lead the way and bring you to meet Phra Chakri." Having spoken, he invited Phra Wasis and Phra Sawamit, the rishis, left the forest hut, and the two brothers followed.

They passed through mountain gaps and forest dwellings, crossed waters, ravines, cliffs, and slopes, and hurried the whole mighty army until they came near Himavan mountain. They saw the hall and hermitage of Sarabhanga, the supreme ascetic, and the muni pointed out the holy man's dwelling to Phra Phrot.

Then Phra Phrot of the solar line ordered the bright jeweled chariots stopped outside the forest hut's boundary. He invited the two royal mothers to walk down from the jeweled chariots, and with the three great yogin teachers entered the hall.

When they arrived, the four royals worshiped Sarabhanga, the teacher mighty in meditation. The four wise holy men honored and bowed to one another with joy.

Then the great rishi Sarabhanga saw the four royals of Phra Chakri's solar line and asked: "Look, Prince Phra Phrot. Where are you going with this brave army? Why have the two brothers become forest ascetics? Why do you not rule the city?"

Then Phra Phrot, lord of the solar line, heard the great siddha and answered: "The vast heavenly realm and kingdom are not things I could love more than my elder brother. My mother is an ill-starred person who has troubled the whole city. I have taken the form of a siddha with a true heart, out of love for my elder brother. Therefore I have invited the two royal mothers to follow mighty Phra Chakri. I learned he was with the holy teacher, and I was deeply glad, hoping to invite the sky-passing lord into the city. Where is he staying?"

Then Sarabhanga, the great ascetic teacher, heard and answered: "I thank you, beloved grandson. Your grateful goodness will be exalted and known through all three worlds. As for Phra Ram, Phra Lak, and the chief queen Sida, I wished them to stay here, and so I made a hut to wait for them. But he said it was near the city and that his vow and conduct would not become firm. The three royals have gone to dwell in the cave at Satkut mountain. If you wish to meet the four-armed lord, do not suffer. I will lead you." Having spoken, he put on his ascetic requisites, invited the three great teachers, and left the hermitage, going along the forest road.

Then Phra Phrot, lord of the solar line, walked after the great siddha, tears gathering in his eyes, lamenting: "Ah, it is pitiful. My royal father has died, and we brothers are parted because of the unrighteous, ill-starred one. Again and again I think of cutting her down, cutting off her arms and head. But because she is my mother, I, her younger son, am trapped and helpless. Alas, supreme Phra Hariwong, I seek Your Majesty and cannot find you. How does he doubt his younger brother? Why has he gone far from the city? If I do not meet the mighty lord, I will give up my life in the forest and not return to Ayutthaya." He walked on, grieving more and more.

Then the band of rishis staying at Satkut mountain heard the noise of the army coming. They glanced out and saw the troops filling and spreading through the forest. Thinking that wicked asuras had come to harm them, they were startled. Some snatched walking sticks, palm-leaf fans, and spittoons and stuffed them into large shoulder-bags. They ran into the forest, striking one another, falling and scrambling without steadiness.
