This is the twenty-third สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Phra Lak's anger at Phra Phrot's approaching army, the brothers' reunion at Satkut, the news of Thotsarot's death, Kaiyakesi's plea for pardon, Rama's refusal to break his father's truth, the tree-deities' command, Phra Phrot's acceptance of Rama's sandals, and the founding of Prachantakham as Phra Phrot waits for Rama's return.

Translation

Lakshmana Sees Phrot's Army

Then Phra Lak, radiant and blessed, served and guarded Phra Chakri and his elder sister Sida as if they were his royal father and the mother who bore his head. This he did constantly, every day. When the time came, he went out.

He turned and wandered, gathering fruits along the slopes of the great mountain. He saw the forest yogins and ascetics startled and running in a loud confusion. Some fell, some rose, some crawled, some fled into thick-leaved shrubs. Thorns caught and tore their bodies as they climbed over rocks, cliffs, and mountains. Then he heard a noisy sound, and dust darkened the sky. Looking out, he saw Phra Phrot leading ten divisions of soldiers in a dense mass. He grew furious, angry as black fire. "I will destroy his life." He strung his bow, testing the string, and the sound thundered through heaven and earth.

Then Phra Narai, radiant and blessed, heard the loud commotion. The lord of earth thought: "Lakshmana has gone to gather fruit. Why has he strung the divine bow? Have enemies or hostile foes appeared?" Thinking this, he hurried there.

When he reached the mountain slope, he looked and saw his younger brother. He spoke by royal command: "Jewel of my eyes, what are you about to shoot?"

Then Phra Lak, faithful in heart, bowed down and reported: "I am hurt by arrogant Phra Phrot. His jealous and false mother made Your Majesty part from the city. He has gained and enjoys the wealth, yet still that is not enough. Now he has raised an army and followed, meaning to harm us and kill us. His bold greed is beyond measure. I will not spare his life. I ask to go out and fight the son of Kaiyakesi, kill him, and end his life, to satisfy my heart against this contempt."

Then created Phra Phitsanurak restrained his lovely younger brother: "Do not rush in anger. The four of us brothers were invited by the gods and rishis together from Vaikuntha to subdue the hosts of base asuras. If Phra Phrot has joined his mother's plan, I will keep that work for myself and destroy him. But I think he is no wicked enemy. The four teachers have come with him. The two brothers also wear the form of siddhas. It would be wrong for them to come killing. They walk weeping and grieving, carrying no weapons at all. Look carefully, beloved younger one. Do not be suspicious. I think they have come to invite us back to Ayutthaya city."

Then radiant Phra Lak looked closely at once and saw that it was true, just as the command had said. He raised joined hands in homage and reported to his supreme elder brother: "It is only because Your Majesty came. Otherwise I would have killed them."

Then Phra Narai of the created solar line invited his lovely younger brother and returned to the forest hut.

Then Sarabhanga, the great rishi, leading the army and troops, went through the mountain gaps and forest dwellings. He saw Satkut mountain, its great height overhanging the clouds. He raised his hand and pointed it out to Phra Phrot: "There is the dwelling of the four-armed lord."

Then the younger brother of the arrow-bearing lord of the serpent line had the jeweled chariots and horses halted along the mountain slope.

The two royals, Kukhan, Sumanthan, and the four ascetics left the gathering of yogins and walked along the line of the stream.

When they reached the meditation-walk enclosure, a hidden place shaded by pleasant trees, they saw Phra Lak, the Avatara, and lovely young Sida. The two brothers ran in and embraced the lotus feet of their supreme elder brother. The two royals wept in grief as if their senses would end.

Then radiant Phra Ram and Phra Lak saw Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut grieving as if life would leave their bodies. Their hearts burned as if lying in poisoned fire; their spirits sank and were shaken away. Fearing that the two younger brothers might perish, Phra Narai sighed deeply. He embraced Phra Phrot, his heart trembling and weeping in sorrow. Phra Lak held Phra Satrut, and all four royals lamented.

When grief and longing had eased, the four-armed royal lord spoke sweetly, asking the two younger brothers: "Look, my two younger brothers, who share the solar line with me. Why do you not rule the city? What has brought you here?"

Then faithful Phra Phrot sobbed as he reported: "I learned that our royal father would give Phra Chakri the wealth of the kingdom, and I, your younger brother, rejoiced beyond measure. When I entered the city, I learned that my unrighteous mother had raised an old vowed truth against the royal command, seized the royal seat and heavenly wealth, and driven Your Majesty to dwell in the forest. Her guilt reaches death. Elder brother, cut her down. Cut off her arms and head, to satisfy your heart against the ill-starred jealous one. I invite Your Majesty, mighty lord, to return and rule the royal city, so that the people may rely on your lotus feet. Sky-passing lord, show mercy."

Then the lord of the three worlds, subduer of every world, heard Phra Phrot his younger brother and answered: "The truth they vowed to one another is not something you should speak against. I am not wounded by poverty or hardship. As for you all coming out to receive me and have me return to rule the royal seat, that would make me break the vowed truth of the one who gave me the world. His royal command is fixed and proclaimed, like diamond iron written on a sheet of stone. The three worlds would thirst to slander him. Jewel of my eyes, listen to your elder brother. Return into the royal dwelling and rule the splendid city. You have left our royal father and mother and followed me into the forest. Who is guarding the sky-passing lord? Is he well? Has any illness or harm come beneath our father's feet?"

Then Phra Phrot, lord of the solar line and bearer of the bow, heard the four-armed lord's command. His heart burned still more. He bowed his head in homage and reported at the lotus feet: "Our glorious royal father grieved and sorrowed on the day Your Majesty left the royal city. His life ended. I, your younger brother, did not come in time for his going to heaven. He gave a final royal command to the two great teachers, forbidding my mother and me to go light the fire or touch the royal body. I was helpless beyond thought, as if life would end where I stood. With no one left to shelter my head, I invited the two beautiful royal mothers to receive your feet and bring you back to govern the kingdom, so that the stain of your younger brother, stained by his mother, might end."

Then the lord who rides Garuda, together with chief queen Sida and the lovely younger brother Phra Lak, learned that their royal father had lost his life. They were startled as if someone had struck and cut them down, and they lamented in grief.

"Alas, lord of the discus. When you gained your four beloved sons, you had to send five munis to ask mighty Phra Suli. Together with the gods and Makhawan, the knowing lord proclaimed the command that we should descend as avatars to destroy hostile foes, fulfilling our father's thought. When your sons gradually grew, you set your heart on teaching us. You raised us without neglect, stable as divine princes. Your sons meant to serve and honor your feet until life's end. But old karma caught up and brought a demon to part us from you. Before we could repay your kindness, lord of earth, you left the body, because your sons were parted from your feet. Alas, we did not see your heart. Even when flame was offered to the righteous king, we did not see that fire." The three royals grieved and longed, and fainted, senseless.

Then radiant Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut saw the three royals grieving and falling down in the hall. They were startled as if a thunderbolt had struck and cut away their lives. Tears filled their eyes, and the two royals grieved too.

"Alas, our royal father's merit is ended. No one is left to shelter our heads. We see only supreme Phra Chakri as the crown to continue the line. Since Your Majesty has lost life, how can your younger brothers live on? We ask to follow the lord of earth to the heaven of the gods." Lamenting, Phra Phrot embraced the feet of the lord of the three worlds; Phra Satrut embraced Phra Lak, his elder brother. They grieved, lay still, and fainted.

Then Sumanthan, the great minister, saw the five royals grieving, lamenting, and fainting together. Startled, stunned through his body, thinking their lives had ended, he was filled with sorrow and grief and went to attend upon the queens.

He raised joined hands and reported: "Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut, the two royal sons, have met Phra Lak, Phra Chakri, and Queen Sida. They told one another the matter, and all grieved deeply in separation and sorrow. Now all five royals weep and lie still in grief."

Then the two beloved ladies heard as if their hearts would break, and hurried away.

When they arrived, they saw their five beloved children pressing their faces down and lying still where they were. Thinking their lives had ended, the beautiful mothers lamented in grief.

"Alas, Phra Lak, four-armed lord, and beloved moon-bright Sida. Since you left the city, your mothers have drunk tears every day. We followed, hoping to see your faces; now, gathered with the solar royal line, the jewels of our hearts do not speak. Alas, Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut, our two supremely beloved ones, honest toward your elder brother, you followed until you met in the middle of the forest. You hoped to invite him back to rule the royal city as crown above all lesser and greater kings. Was it fitting that you should all die, leaving these mothers here to endure suffering? Even if we still live, where will there be any happiness? The city will fall into an age of ruin, with suffering and pain beyond measure. Human beings, gods, and ascetics will be troubled throughout all three worlds." Lamenting, they struck their breasts and sobbed, pressed down their faces, and fainted.

Then the palace women, lesser and greater, the senior women, noble ladies, and all the inner attendants who had followed, saw the seven royals of the solar line faint in the assembly. They were startled as if someone had cut them down. They longed and lamented in grief, rolling and falling upon the earth. The sound rang like a mighty storm. Some fainted without moving in the forest hall.

Then the four diligent teachers in meditation, with the great minister Sumanthan and Kukhan the forest hunter, were all frightened and startled. The rishis too grieved and wept. They ran about in confusion through the huts, shouting for physicians in noisy disorder.

Then all the doctors, masseurs, and medicine-men heard the call and were startled. They grabbed ceremonial cloths and put them on, with no belly-cloth at all, seized medicine boxes, and went into the forest hut.

They saw the seven royals and the women lying still, not moving their bodies, as if all their lives had ended together. The doctors who had come in were terrified, pale-faced and trembling. Some blew snuff-medicine; some kneaded and massaged; together they worked in confusion.

Then the noble ladies and all the senior women and inner attendants regained consciousness.

Then the strong-vowed ascetics, Sumanthan, and the doctors saw that the seven royals had not yet woken. Their hearts burned as if by fire; everyone was frightened and shaken. They consulted together in confusion, then ordered the officers: "Bring fragrant water, sweet in scent and taste, and rub it gently over the seven royals, so it may soak through their bodies."

Then all the noble ladies and senior women brought splendid jeweled cups filled with fragrant water. They went in, rubbed and sprinkled the bodies of the seven radiant royals of the solar line. Some fanned them, waving cool air, and all regained consciousness together.

Then Phra Ram of the created solar line, with Phra Lak and lovely Sida, turned and saw the royal mothers. The three bowed their heads down to the feet of the two royal mothers. The three grieved as if life would end.

Then the two beloved royal mothers embraced Phra Lak, Phra Rama, and moon-bright Sida. They looked on their faces and rubbed their bodies, speaking royal words to receive their spirits: "Still your grief and sorrow. Do not weep so much, beloved children. Your royal father gave up his life, and we mothers grieve as if our breasts were broken. Our suffering for you is beyond measure, as if our lives would end. Now Phra Phrot, your younger brother, does not rule the royal seat. He was angry at his mother like black fire and would have killed her. He brought us mothers out to follow you, not listening to Kaiyakesi's words. We invite you to enter the city and rule the delightful kingdom."

Then Phra Chakrakaeo, lord of the solar line, heard his royal mothers. He bowed at their feet and reported: "Your son has accepted our royal father's truth. How could I return to the royal dwelling? Even if my heart suffers hardship in the forest wilderness, I will stay according to the proclaimed command, even until life and breath end, so the three worlds will not make judgment against the one who ruled the earth."

Kaiyakesi and the Rishis Plead

Then lovely Kaiyakesi sat at the rear of the jeweled chariot, thinking silently. Uneasy in spirit, afraid of the Avatara, she could not remain still long. She called Kuchi, her heart-companion, and hurried down from the victorious chariot.

When she arrived, she hardly dared come close. Holding her mind steady, she sat down before him and spoke sweet words: "Phra Chakri, show mercy. Your mother has done a terrible evil, causing you, my son, to be parted from happiness and splendor, until your royal father, lord of the earth, lost his life. Because I, your mother, was ugly, deformed, greedy beyond measure, and deluded, you may be furious and angry as age-ending fire, nearly killing and cutting me down. First show mercy. Your mother asks pardon. I invite you, my son, to return into the city and rule the subjects and people."

Then radiant Phra Hariwong heard and answered: "Your son holds no vengeance. The fruit of karma has brought its answer, and so I must wander and sleep in the forest. I did not repay my royal father's kindness when the sky-passing lord went to heaven. As for returning to the royal city, how could I listen to my mother's words? It would break the truth that was vowed. Who would count that as good?"

Then soft-bodied Kaiyakesi heard the flavor of Phra Chakri's words. The lady lamented and pleaded: "Oh Phra Hariwong, lord of the conch, have compassion on your mother just once. Do not cast me off and cut me away, leaving me to suffer pain. If you have no mercy, kill me and end my life and breath, or cut down my whole body and punish me in whatever way. Whatever I did wrong, let it be so; I will not feel even a little wounded. Only let me invite you to return into the victorious city, so the subjects may be happy and glad."

Then the splendid crown of the world, subduer of every world, heard his royal mother plead and lament. He spoke by royal command: "Your son is not angry with his mother. I am of noble stock, and I will set my heart on repaying my royal father's kindness. In the solar line of gods, truth and dharma are firm and do not weaken. In the time of our mighty ancestor, the lord of earth kept truth: he gave his life without attachment, even cutting flesh from himself for a forest hunter. Down to our royal father, the sky-passing lord loved truth more than life. He gave the kingdom to Your Majesty and drove me, wearing vows as a rishi, to dwell in the forest for fourteen years. This is my royal father's word. Your son will preserve the truth according to the command spoken before. Return into the royal city and remain there in happiness and welfare."

Then the rishis Vasistha and Vishvamitra heard supreme Phra Chakri speak, holding firm to truth. They said: "Look, beloved grandson. Turn your face and listen to us. We are ancient teachers and know every matter. The kings of your line are all mighty emperors. In the time when Hiranya, the demon chief, was proud and base, he rolled up the earth of the four continents and carried it beneath his arm to the underworld. Phra Narai followed, destroyed him, and was born as King Anomatan. Phra Isuan gave him the royal throne, and the line came down through Atchaban to your royal father, each continuing the line of gods. The younger brother ruling the city before the elder has never existed in the solar lineage. Your mother and the two younger brothers are full of sorrow and grief. It is fitting, grandson, that you return to enjoy the royal wealth and continue the solar line as a support of the world."

Then radiant Phra Harirak Chakrakaeo raised joined hands and answered: "Revered elder, what you say is not right. In the beginning the five teachers went to attend upon the great lord at Mount Kailasa, together with the gods and asuras, and brought me from Vaikuntha to subdue the base asuras, the wicked and jealous bands. My mother asked my royal father for truth, so that your grandson would dwell in the forest for fourteen years. When the age comes, distress will be ended and the world will live cool in happiness. Revered elder, you knew this from the beginning. How can you have me return to the city? My royal father's command is fixed, like diamond iron written so it cannot be erased. I will preserve his truth and care nothing for life."

Then the two diligent teachers in meditation heard the Garuda-borne lord hold truth, cut firm and straight, like Mount Meru struck by the world-wind without shaking. He was grateful, willing to give his life, with his heart set on destroying the asuras; he had taken birth to subdue distress and make the whole world cool. They had no thought left and no speech to make. The siddhas fell silent.

Then radiant Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut heard the lord of earth's words as if life would end. Each embraced his feet, full of grief and weeping. "Alas, lord of the three worlds, if you will not return into the city, your younger brothers will follow and serve beneath your feet, taking pity on Your Majesty in the forest. Without attachment, we offer our lives until breath is ended."

Then wise and brave Phra Chakri embraced the two victorious younger brothers. The sky-passing lord grieved deeply, then spoke by command: "Jewels and lives of your elder brother, all four of us were invited by gods and rishis so that we might be pillars of the world. Why grieve so heavily? I have accepted our royal father's truth and cannot return to the city. I know now that you love your elder brother, but how can you abandon the city? Who will the subjects rely on? Return and guard the royal city."

Then Phra Phrot, arrow-bearing lord of the solar line, heard the command and grieved still more. He raised joined hands and answered: "I cannot imagine parting from the feet of the lord of the three worlds. If Your Majesty would have me return to the city, then kill me and end my life." Speaking, he pressed his face down at the lord's feet, suffering and sobbing so deeply that he lost his senses.

Then the radiant tree-deities who dwelt at Satkut mountain, in a place of delight and happiness, saw Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut of the solar line pleading before their elder brother, while Phra Ram would not return to the city and all were full of grief. "If we remain silent and do not restrain them, the eight royals may die. Then who will go subdue the unrighteous ones, the thorn of the earth?"

Having thought this, the guardian gods showed their faces through the shining window-opening, revealed their bodies, and spoke a command down to them: "Phra Ram is the lord of the naga-throne, who has come from the great Milk Ocean, hoping to subdue unrighteousness in all three realms. It is right that he do as he was invited to do. Phra Phrot and mighty Phra Satrut should go guard the royal city and wait. Invite the royal mothers to enter the great moon-palace dwelling."

Then Phra Narai of the created solar line heard the tree-deities. The righteous lord spoke: "Beloved younger brothers, did you hear? The gods have cried out and declared that you should return into the city and guard the subjects and people. I too will go subdue distress, so the whole world may be cool and happy. Before long, within fourteen years, we brothers will meet again."

Then Phra Phrot of the created solar line heard as if someone had struck him down with the command proclaimed by the gods. His heart burned like poisoned fire. He could no longer find words to plead with his elder brother. Tears filled his eyes, and he answered the command because he was helpless: "Ayutthaya city is the refuge of the three great worlds. Kings, gods, and asuras throughout the whole universe depend upon it. Your younger brother is like a firefly with little light, unfit for the place of the blazing sun. I ask to take the Avatara's sandals and place them in the heavenly seat, in Your Majesty's place, as the lord and crown of the cities of the world. Then I will accept guardianship of the city, waiting for Phra Chakri's return. If after fourteen years Your Majesty has not returned, I and radiant Phra Satrut will offer our lives by entering a pyre."

Then Phra Narai, lord of the solar line, embraced the two younger brothers. "Jewels of my eyes, do not grieve. Guard the royal city. Keep the ministers and subjects in harmony. Care for the three royal mothers, and let nothing be lacking." Having spoken, he picked up his grass sandals, made for walking in the forest, and gave them to him. "Let these shoes stand as the eyes and heart of your elder brother in the city." Then he gave blessings: "May you remain stable in happiness and ease. May sickness and danger not harm you. Younger brothers, return into the city."

Then Phra Phrot, lord of the solar line, received the sandals and placed them above his head in devotion. He said: "Your younger brother must go far away because of the words of the radiant gods. I will drink tears for fourteen years until the lord of earth returns to the royal city."

Then Phra Narai, arrow-bearing lord of the solar line, heard and spoke graciously: "Do not suffer and grieve. To be born in the world of becoming cannot be measured only by happiness. It is necessary for your elder brother to walk in the forest. I am not dying or parting forever." Having spoken, he bowed at the lotus feet of the three royal mothers: "I invite Your Majesties to return into the delightful city."

Then the three beloved royal mothers heard the flavor of Phra Rama's words. Each grieved and longed deeply. They embraced the three beloved children, tears covering their faces, and sobbed: "Alas, you must walk in the forest because you go to kill the unrighteous. You will have hardship and difficulty for fourteen years, with no happiness or ease. Your mothers will grieve and suffer, counting the days until you return." Having spoken, they addressed Sida: "Look, beloved Sida. Your mother will go following your royal husband through the forest. You will suffer and endure great hardship. Beloved daughter, where can you walk? You are chief among inner royal ladies. Do not go. Stay with your mothers. Then we will see your face in place of arrow-bearing Phra Harirak; our grief will ease and some steady happiness will remain until the four-armed lord returns."

Then young, beloved Nang Sida heard the three royal mothers and answered: "Your Majesties have mercy and kindness; your grace should be placed above my head. It is not that your daughter would oppose the royal command. But your daughter is a servant at the feet, sharing happiness, sharing suffering, sharing life with Phra Chakrakrit, my lord. Even if hardship and suffering touch my body, I will follow according to old karma and will not grieve over it."

Then the three royal mothers, heart-beloved ladies, heard their lovely daughter-in-law. Each sighed deeply. "Alas, Sida, dear gentle one, beloved chief of affection. You will follow your husband, without care for life and breath. It is fitting that you are the queen of Phra Chakri, the created royal lord. May you increase in happiness always. May sickness and danger not oppress you." Having spoken, they blessed the four-armed royal son and his younger brother Phra Lak: "May you possess power and excellent might. When you destroy hostile enemy kings, let none be able to withstand or oppose you. Subdue throughout all ten directions, and may it be fulfilled according to the coming from Vaikuntha." The eight royals took leave and spoke farewell, lamenting in sorrow. They stayed overnight in the hall, counting fifteen nights.

Phrot Takes the Sandals Back

Then the four great ascetics understood that Phra Lak and Phra Chakri would go destroy the base asuras, and that Phra Phrot and his younger brother Phra Satrut would return to guard the royal seat. They rejoiced as if meditation had first been accomplished. The teachers gave blessings: "May your excellent power and might increase. Let hostile foes be unable to withstand you. Destroy the unrighteous hosts and let no danger harm you." Having spoken, the four teachers took leave of Phra Hariwong, lord and refuge, flew up into the clouds, and went to their halls by their power.

Then radiant Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut invited Phra Chakri's sandals and placed them on a shining jeweled tray. They left the form of forest ascetics. When the sun shone strong, they led the three beloved royal mothers back to the place of the troops.

When they arrived, they invited the sandals of the radiant elder royal brother up into the bright jeweled chariot and had the mighty army unfurl.

The nine-jeweled chariot moved. The two royal brothers went at the front. The chariots of the three royal mothers were lovely as great Vejayanta. After them came chariots of the solar royal line and chariots of lovely women, all yoked to skilled noble horses, with charioteers standing firm and driving them onward. They were adorned with tiered umbrellas and canopies, victory flags, side flags, and signal flags. Pipes and drums rang through the forest. The hunters led the soldiers at the front. The sound of the chariots and ten divisions thundered through caves, streams, and mountain ridges. Dust spread through the sky as they went along the road.

They crossed streams, passed fields and mountain hollows, followed sand-slopes and forest edges, and thought of Phra Chakri. Tears gathered on their faces and they sighed. "Alas, supreme Phra Chakri, how is Your Majesty now? Are you wandering and sleeping in the forest, or are you staying in the hall? Your younger brother meant to be golden sandals beneath the feet of the supreme elder brother. I grieve because the gods force me to part from your feet for fourteen years. Wasted is the strength of being born in the line of mighty radiant Phra Narai; I do not go with you to destroy the base asura hosts." The two royals wept until tears streamed, suffering almost to the end of life. They came in grief through the forest for fifteen nights and days.

When they reached the end of Ayutthaya's territory, they halted the army and troops. The two royals moved gracefully up into the shining golden pavilion.

Then they spoke sweetly and commanded the four great ministers: "Establish a royal city at the head of the forest road."

Then the four ministers, skilled in war, received the command of the four-armed lord's younger brother and hurried away.

They assigned and mustered workers, built fortifications, lesser and greater royal buildings, quarters for palace people, and inner-police posts, all according to the royal word. They gave it a name: bright Prachantakham city. It was full of delight like a great capital, a place where people came and went.

He ordered mighty Phra Satrut to invite the three royal mothers to Ayutthaya city, together with the great minister Sumanthan. He also ordered that the sandals of the lord of the three worlds be placed in the glittering jeweled palace, as the great support of Ayutthaya. Having ordered this, he bowed his head with joined hands to the royal mothers: "Your son asks leave to stay here and wait for the four-armed lord."
