Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the twenty-fourth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Phirap's planting of the golden Chomphu-Phawa tree, Rama's departure from Satkut, the crossing of the Amruek River, the fight in Phirap's garden, Phirap's seizure of Sida, Rama's killing of Phirap, Saowari's release from the forest-fire curse, the gift of Akkhot's armor, and Indra's creation of the Godavari hermitages.

Translation

Phirap's Golden Rose-Apple Tree

Now I will tell of Phirap, fierce and daring lord of demons. He lived at the foot of Asakan mountain and possessed power beyond measure. When he displayed his force and command, the earth, sky, and realm trembled. Siddhas, masters of knowledge, gods, and guardian spirits throughout the world feared the demon lord's majesty. Phra Isuan had taken strength from the great ocean and from fire and divided it for the yaksha, then granted him a forest domain. Only when beasts crossed into his territory did he seize and eat them for food; otherwise he did no common harm, for the demon lord feared the lord of the three worlds. He obtained a golden Chomphu-Phawa tree, a thing pleasing to his heart. With quick strength he carried it straight to his pleasure garden.

When he arrived, he called the demons who guarded the lovely garden. "I have obtained a strange and excellent tree, whose fruit has delicious taste. It is called the golden Chomphu-Phawa, and is wonderfully precious. I myself labored to bring it here, hoping to plant it in this place, so that its fruit and seed may become food for me. Help one another dig a broad and deep hole at the edge of the pond. Do not delay, but do it now."

Then the band of powerful demons saw the beautiful tree. They all looked at it with noisy delight. Some demons said they did not know it, for it was stranger than any tree in the forest. After admiring it, they invited one another out, and the asuras dug the hole in a bustle.

Then Phirap, their great lord, saw that the hole was finished as he wished, and planted the tree at once.

When the work was finished, he gave orders to the demons: "Go draw water and pour it over the Chomphu-Phawa."

Then the band of demon lords seized water-jars and ran in commotion, each competing to draw water and pour it.

Then Phirap, strong in power, finished the work and ordered the demons: "Keep watering it and loosening the soil. If my tree dies, I will kill you until all are destroyed. If beasts cross in to eat it, surround them here in this place. So too with humans, siddhas, or masters of knowledge: whoever comes here, do not let them leave. In seven days I will come admire the tree and take my pleasure."

After giving these orders, he displayed his power. The sky darkened and the sun's radiance was covered. He flew away from the garden and went straight to the heavenly palace.

When he reached Tavatimsa, the demon lord rejoiced and wandered through every level, pursuing and troubling the gods. He seized at the garments of heavenly nymphs, intending to enjoy their love. He teased the divine maidens, turning and chasing and grabbing in delight.

Then the gods and heavenly women of the shining realms were frightened as if life would end. Trembling, they cried out in confusion. Some carried one another, some dragged one another and ran, some fell and rolled and could not rise. The hosts of heavenly nymphs ran into one another in terror.

Then Phirap, strong in power, saw the gods' ornaments, all bright with jewels. The more he looked and stared, the more the demon's heart was caught. He rushed in and blocked their way, and the asura stole the gods' gems.

When he had gained what he desired, his heart was full of joy. He flew away from the city of heaven and went straight back to his demon dwelling.

Rama Leaves Satkut

Then Phra Harirak, the created lord, collected his mind according to the practice of dharma, steady in compassion. He was living with the two royals of the solar line at Satkut mountain, yet he thought of his royal father and felt his heart burn and grieve. He could not prosper in meditation as a siddha hermit should, but was troubled as if he would lose his vow. He spoke to Sida and Phra Lak: "Look, my beloved younger ones. If we stay here at Satkut mountain, I think our royal mothers will come circling here. I mean to go away and let no one know the place where I can be found, so that I may cultivate the fruit of meditation, quiet the spirit, and worship the fire."

Then lovely young Sida and Phra Lak, loyal in heart, heard the royal command. They bowed their heads at his feet and reported to the lord of the earth: "Whatever gives ease to Your Majesty's spirit, we your servants will follow."

Then the Avatara, brave in war, heard their graceful words and was glad. He invited Phra Lak and the chief queen, his royal lady, out of the forest hut, and they went along the road.

When they came to the company of the ascetics, gathered together on the mountain slope, he led Phra Lak and Sida in to pay homage to the sages.

Then he spoke sweetly: "May my teachers remain in happiness. My body is not at ease, and now I ask leave to go."

Then the great ascetics, elder and younger, heard victorious Phra Hariwong. They felt attachment and compassion, yet could not obstruct him. Each one grieved, with no thought and no speech left. The siddhas gave their blessings: "May the enemies and royal foes be defeated by the power of your arrows. May Your Majesty go in lasting welfare, without any suffering."

Then Phra Chakri, generous in nature, with Phra Lak and young Sida, raised joined hands to receive the ascetics' blessing. The three royals were equally glad, their faces bright as the moon with its halo. They left Satkut mountain and went on foot along the road.

They walked between the lines of mountains, and the lord pointed out the animals in the forest. Troops of monkeys ran and chased one another; buffalo wandered by pairs. Herds of deer stepped lightly, nibbling tender shoots; lions leapt and played. Elephants closed their eyes and called to their mates; tigers stood firm and roared. Great lions walked with majesty; yaks moved gracefully, caring for their hair. Elephant-lions mingled in pairs, while bears walked muttering. Wild cattle wheeled in restless play; rhinoceroses bit through ranks of thorns. Female gibbons swung their bodies from branch to branch, searching for one another. Cicadas and forest insects sang continuously, their clear notes echoing. Admiring as they went, the lord crossed mountain ridges and hills.

They saw the hermitage of a teacher beside the stream near the foot of the lovely mountain. They all walked gracefully in to the place of the ascetic.

There they saw a great siddha with his wife, who was also living as an ascetic. After paying homage, Rama spoke sweetly: "What is Your Reverence's honored name? What is your solar-line family, and where is your kingdom and city? Since you established this vow of restraint, how many years have passed?"

Then the great ascetic, strong in vows, saw the three royals of the solar line, their faces and marks alike. The two princes were beautiful and caught his eyes, like gods come down from heaven. The lady's form was graceful and shining, like the clear moon among clouds. He answered in pleasant words: "Look, beloved grandchildren. We two were royals who ruled Pancha Thani city. My name was King Suthat, and this queen, my royal wife, is named Sukkhai Thewi. We had no daughter and no son. We gave up wealth and possessions and came to cultivate meditation as ascetics in the Himavan mountains. Ten thousand years have now passed. As for you two princes, what are your names in the solar line? Why do you not remain in the victorious city, but wander in the forest dressed as ascetics?"

Then the lord of the three worlds, subduer of all, heard the siddha's words, and the sky-passing lord answered: "I, your grandchild, am named Rames. This is Sida, my chief queen. This is my younger brother, dear as my life, named Prince Phra Lak. We are offspring of King Thotsarot of the solar line, who rules Ayutthaya, the royal seat. Lady Kaiyakesi, the young queen, asked my father to fulfill a vow, causing me to dress as an ascetic and live in the forest for fourteen years. When that is complete, I will return to the city and rule the subjects and people."

Then King Suthat the rishi heard Phra Harirak Chakri and felt still greater compassion and attachment. "Stay here with your grandfather. I will teach you the rites of meditation. Do not wander and sleep in the forest, making the body suffer."

Then the radiant Avatara heard those words as if they were heavenly water. He raised joined hands and answered: "Your Majesty's mercy and kindness are a grace above my head. But this place seems still near the city, and people may follow and find us. I will wander and seek a place to serve the vow, quiet and hidden in solitude, so that I may set my heart on meditation. May my teacher remain well; I ask leave to go."

Then the great elder ascetic heard the royal command and felt deep attachment, unable to say more. He sat in silent thought for a while, and knew that this was radiant Narai, come as an avatar to destroy the asuras. He rejoiced as if he had gained sixteenfold delight. He recited spells and gave blessing: "May your power blaze like bitter fire. May all enemies who think crookedly fall by Phra Chakri's arrows."

Then Lady Sukkhai, the fair ascetic woman, looked at Queen Sida's form and found delight and joy in her heart. With boundless love and affection, she held out a golden garland, stroked her face and back, and blessed her: "Go in lasting happiness, my child."

Then Rama of the solar line, bearer of the bow, with his powerful younger brother and his chief queen, each paid homage and took leave of the two great rishis. They left the forest hut and went along the woodland path.

They came to the Amruek River, a deep, wide torrent with a swift current. Fish were scattered everywhere, twisting, chasing, and spouting water. Mermaids spread their hair and rolled their eyes; makaras broke through the waves and splashed. All were rough and frightening; the river was hard to cross. The three royals invited one another to rest under a banyan tree with thick leaves. Its shade closely blocked the sun, and the wind blew softly, carrying pollen from flowers, scattering rich fragrance. Blossoms fell upon the ground, and the bow-bearing lord took ease in body and mind.

Now I will tell of the radiant deity of the banyan tree, who lived in a shining jeweled palace, a place of bodily delight. He learned that Narai of Vaikuntha was going to subdue the race of demons and had no raft or boat with which to cross the great river. "I must help the conch-bearing lord cross to the broad farther bank." Having thought this, he left his palace and flew down with the power of his might.

He stood on the riverbank near the supreme Chakrakrit. Raising his hands above his head, he created a boat at once.

When it was complete, he pushed it floating along the water. It moved with the river's flow and curved in to rest before the banyan tree through the deity's mighty power.

Then Phra Phitsanurak, the lord, looked and saw the little boat floating toward him, stopping at the landing. He was joyful as if he had gained Indra's wealth, and he led the two royals down into the boat.

By the power of the excellent merit of Phra Chakrakrit and by the majesty of the gods, the wind carried them across the river. The boat was beautiful beyond measure, like a golden ship meeting and pressing through the waves. The gods scattered divine flowers, sweet with fragrance, everywhere. All the fish swam gathered around them like a mighty army crowding the river.

When they reached the shore across the water, the four-armed lord led the two royals onward along the forest road.

The Garden of Phirap

The lord wandered for many days and came to the place of a pleasure garden. Trees stood thickly in rows, but he did not know it was the asura's garden. The three royals walked with grace, beautiful as divine king and heavenly maidens, and went admiring the celestial flowers and vines as if in heaven.

They wandered admiring the noble trees of the garden, fragrant with every kind of flower: screw-pine, kaeo, kannika, rose, soi-fa, inthanin, water lotus, phikun with prayong, jasmine, maha-hong, saraphi dropping its rich scent, krathin, nang-yaem, jasmine vine, sao-yut, phutthachat, champi, maluli, sukhrom, nom-sawan, golden Chomphu-Phawa, and inchan. Their fruit hung in clusters, swaying on every branch, thick and pendant. The lord plucked the cluster of fruit that pleased him and gave it to beautiful Sida.

The three royals strolled and took royal delight until the sun leaned westward and the day's heat eased from their bodies.

Then the demons guarding the splendid garden saw two humans and a woman come into the grounds, gathering fruit, breaking flowers, leaves, and branches. "If Phirap comes and sees this, it will not go well. He will kill us and we will die. We cannot stay silent like this. We must seize them to escape blame." Saying this, the demon band rushed in with anger.

When they arrived, they shouted in rebuke: "Hey! Who are you, bold and deluded, coming to oppress us without fear, breaking the trees of the demon lord? His name is Phirap, mighty in power. The guardian spirits in every direction fear his force. We will seize you now and give you to Death as food."

Then the radiant jeweled Chakri heard the asuras speak and gave royal command: "We three are ascetics, wandering to practice vows in the forest. We saw these clear and lovely trees, not knowing they were an asura's garden. The fruit had fallen scattered on the ground, and we picked it up and ate it in the manner of rishis. Do not speak with arrogance, or your lives will perish."

Then the band of demons, small and great, heard this and felt anger packed tight in their hearts. They grew furious like the fire at the end of the age. Gnashing their teeth and grinding their jaws, they shouted, stamped their feet until the earth rang, and rushed forward by many thousands, crowding in to attack.

Then Phra Lak of the radiant solar line saw the wicked asuras acting fiercely as they came in. He swung the bow in his hand, bold as death itself. Leaving the shade of the tree, he went out driving and killing the demon host.

Then the daring asuras saw the human come out to make war. Each one leapt in to join the fight.

They shot crossbows and firearms; some raised weapons great and small; some seized stones and cliffs and hurled them. Their war-cries shook the forest.

Then Phra Lak of the created solar line received, blocked, and warded off the demons, standing firm against the asuras. Alone he pressed them hard, turning and darting in the midst of the yaksha host. He struck with his powerful bow, and the asuras broke, died, and scattered away.

Then the remaining demons, small and great, defeated and unwilling to fight on, fled into the forest in terror and confusion.

Then Phra Hariwong, radiant Narai, saw his younger brother making war and the asuras lying dead everywhere. He raised his hand and stroked his back, smiling as he praised the younger one's power: "You are no loss to the line of Isara. Beneath heaven, no one can equal you." Having spoken, he invited lovely-faced Sida and created Phra Lak to leave the demons' garden, and they went together along the road.

They crossed streams and passed mountain lines until they saw the shade of a great rang tree with thick leaves. Its flowers hung beautifully, like parijata flowers in Indra's city. They stopped there to cool themselves. The wind carried the scent of pollen; bees circled, singing as they flew; and the bow-bearing lord rested in happiness.

Then Phirap, mighty and brave, reached the seventh day on which he would go to the garden. The demon lord bathed his body, adorned himself with supreme powerful jewels, gems honored by all the gods, put them on his asura limbs, seized his spear, raised it, and hurried away.

He crossed streams and passed mountain slopes, winding along the foot of the hills. Seeing wild cattle, buffalo, and elephants, he felt glad and pleased. He crept and watched, hiding himself as a demon, then raised and swung his spear with power, chasing and stabbing the animals in confusion.

He chose the fat wild cattle, buffalo, and lions for food. He ate livers, kidneys, entrails, and eyeballs for his pleasure. When finished, he pulled mountain creepers, tied the feet of a great elephant, carried it with mighty strength, and went straight to the pleasure garden.

When he arrived, he saw the trees gashed and broken, branches struck down; some had fallen and lay scattered over the earth. The demon host lay ruined and senseless. The elephant he had carried, the demon threw down on the spot. He stamped his feet, his eyes red as fire, and called the demons in a great commotion.

Then the asuras who had fled into the forest heard their lord calling and ran out toward him in confusion.

Then Phirap, their great lord, saw more clearly that all his troops were wounded and bleeding, and he grew very angry. "Hey, hey! What has happened, you demons? Who came to fight and break you down? Who was so rough and arrogant, fearing no face, daring to act like this?"

Then the powerful demons, afraid their lord might kill them again, raised joined hands and explained the matter: "There were two bold humans with a beautiful woman, graceful as a drawing. They came breaking branches, flower clusters, and twigs, acting in low violence through the garden. All of us meant to seize the humans and give them to our lord as food. But those humans possessed victorious power, and killed the demon host. Beyond thought and beyond our strength to fight them, we hid and watched from the great mountain slope. Now they have gone away along the forest road."

Then Phirap, powerful demon, heard this and grew wrathful as fire. The asura ground his teeth. "Bah, arrogant humans! I will destroy them and end their lives." He seized his spear, swinging it like age-ending flame, and the demon followed their footprints.

He stared along the forest openings until he neared the great rang tree. He saw the beautiful lady with the two forest ascetics. Both princes held bows in their hands, splendid like Indra. "They must indeed have power. I will secretly take their lives." Having thought this, he raised joined hands to worship the great lord of Kailasa, closed his eyes, steadied his mind, and recited a powerful spell to hide his body.

By the strength of his expert knowledge, both his body and shadow vanished. He went up to the two male humans and stared over their whole bodies without turning his eyes away.

He saw the two princes, graceful and shining, beautiful as the sun in the sky. Looking at the chief royal lady, he saw beauty like the stainless moon. The more he looked, the more desire overwhelmed him. Love's heat clung to him like fire and spread through his body. The asura reflected and thought: "No, I will take the lady away to enjoy with me as my close companion." Having thought this, he recited his magical spell.

When he had completed the powerful spell, the asura blew three times. Murk covered the sun, and darkness fell deeper than night. He rejoiced as if he had gained Indra's wealth, went near the royal lady, and seized the young woman.

Then young Sida, most lovely and pitiful, was terrified as if her life would leave her. The lady called out for the four-armed lord.

Then Phirap, demon lord and brave warrior, held the chief royal lady in his arms and hurried away with his demon strength.

Then the created jeweled Chakri heard the voice of lovely Sida. The righteous lord reached out to find the lady, but found only Phra Lak of the solar line and could not find the beautiful one. The king was deeply astonished and doubtful, and gave command: "Why have earth, sky, and air gone strange, dark in every direction? I heard Sida's voice crying, and then it vanished."

Then Phra Lak, noble in nature, heard the king's words. He bowed and answered: "This must be the demon lord named Phirap of the forest. He has displayed his power and followed us; that is why earth and sky have gone dark like this. Your Majesty should shoot an arrow of light and make it a radiant sun. Then you will see the asura's body, and the lord will be able to fight him."

Then Phra Chakri, brave and wise, heard his victorious younger brother. The sky-passing lord took up the bow and shot.

It cracked like thunder. The whole world-element shook and trembled. The light blazed like the rising sun, and when they looked, they saw the demon carrying the chief royal lady and fleeing through the deep forest. The two royals were furious like age-ending fire and pursued the asura closely.

Phra Lak struck him with the bow; the four-armed lord rushed in and seized the demon. They took back the chief royal lady, and the asura set Queen Sida down.

Then Phirap, powerful demon, was wounded and bruised through all his body. Angry like the fire at the end of time, he cried out: "Hey, you two humans! What dreadful power makes you so bold? You came into my garden, killed the demon host, and broke my noble trees without fear. I am the king of death, following to slay you. Today your lives will end by the mighty hand of this demon."

Then Phra Harirak, jeweled Chakri and lord, heard the wicked asura and answered: "We were walking through the forest and did not know the reason, that this was a demon's garden. The demon band crowded in to attack me, and so I killed them to satisfy the matter. Do not swagger in boldness or speak rough, arrogant words. If you fight me, mighty as I am, where will you escape with your life?"

Then Phirap, strong in power, heard this, gnashed his teeth, and stamped his feet. He cried out: "Hey, little human! Your words are proud and overreaching. You do not know that you are about to die, yet you boast of your power. What do you two amount to, and how could you withstand my skill?" Speaking, he swung his victorious spear, leaping and bounding in to fight.

Then radiant Phra Harirak received, guarded, and fought him, while the king rushed in and grappled with the asura. With his left hand he seized the demon lord's spear, while Phra Lak attacked the yaksha. They turned and fought back and forth, shifting through many forms, locked in combat.

Then Phirap, strong in power, pressed the battle, pushing and advancing. Each seized at the other's victorious bow, pulling and jerking to tear it from the hand. Each warded, each retreated, each pursued, each received and struck in confusion with tremendous power.

Then the lord of the three worlds, subduer of all, lunged and pierced in, seizing the asura. His foot pressed the demon's knee and held firm. The asura seized his waist and raised the spear, turning swiftly like a spinning discus. The lord leapt up and set his foot upon the demon's shoulder, while his hand raised the bow to attack. They wheeled and changed forms in confusion, neither one yielding or fleeing. Phra Lak pressed in and struck until the asura could no longer withstand their power.

Then Phirap, mighty and brave, felt pain burning through his body. In anger he no longer cared for life. With one hand he lifted a mountain, displaying his fierce power, and hurled it with demon strength; sparks flashed out like fire.

Then the lord of the three worlds, subduer of all, took up the Brahmastra arrow, moved gracefully, drew the string, set it to the bow, and shot.

The sound rang through the whole universe. Mount Sumeru shook and trembled. It struck Phirap, the victorious demon lord, and his life was entirely ended.

Then the hosts of gods in every shining realm saw Phra Harirak Chakri kill the asura and take his life. Each leaned from a golden palace; the divine king clapped his hands in ringing joy. Heavenly maidens and young goddesses cried out blessings and praised him. Some scattered divine flowers from heaven, sending down celestial fragrance. The scent spread everywhere, and the sound of rejoicing filled every layer of the sky.

Then the jeweled Chakri, lord, after he had finished killing the asura and the gods had blessed him, saw divine flowers and garlands falling everywhere with the scent of pollen, scattered over the ground. The four-armed lord gathered them for Sida. The three royals admired the golden flowers, wonderfully beautiful in every kind, and went on, admiring as they walked along the forest road.

They walked between mountains, winding along and admiring the birds: parrots flying with nori birds, watch-forest birds calling "watch the grove," kra-nai birds, jewel-fowl and mynas, golden swans calling to their flocks, peacocks dancing in circles, kra-wen birds missing their mates, ba-rabun, khun-phaen, and parrots mingling, kingfishers playing their tails, barbets and moorhens wandering through straw, magpie-robins chattering together, quails, fire-backed doves, junglefowl, separated birds, wild chickens calling, swifts and anchans, dok-bua, five-colored birds at their nests, cuckoos, wind-eating birds, golden-necked birds, and karavek birds singing sweetly. The sky-passing lord admired the birds in the deep forest as he went.

Saowari and the Forest Fire

Now I will tell of lovely Lady Saowari. Ever since she was cursed by supreme Phra Suli, she had lived long in the Sala forest. Alone and isolated, she suffered, gathering fruit for food. She dwelt beneath the mountain shade in the splendid Surakan cave. No four-footed or two-footed beasts, however fierce, came near the lovely lady. When the bright sunlight rose, the lady walked out.

She went gathering the flowers that grew near the foot of the mountain. Glancing aside, she saw the three royals, each splendid in form. One was like the lord of the gods, chief of the golden Meru in heaven. One was beautiful like the sun moving through the sky. Both had beautiful forms and majesty, and both bore great bows and arrows. The chief royal lady was beautiful like the moon floating stainless in the sky, slender and graceful in all her body, resembling Phra Lakshmi. The three were supreme in the world, a delight and joy to the heart.

"If I go out and ask them, it will seem too rash and improper." Thinking this, she pretended not to notice, walked on, and kept gathering flowers.

Then the lord of the three worlds led the two royals of the solar line along the forest path. Crossing streams, passing hills and open fields, and moving through the broad mountain line, he saw a woman of lovely and graceful appearance. His heart was deeply puzzled. "Is she a guardian spirit of the forest? Or a fierce-hearted yakshini or forest ghost, pretending with deceit?" Having thought this, he gave command and asked: "What are you, coming to live alone in the forest? What is your name, young lady?"

Then Lady Saowari, most lovely and pitiful, heard the command. The young woman glanced at Phra Chakri, looked carefully, and was bewildered. She sat down and bowed to his beautiful feet. "Your servant is named Saowari, beneath the feet of the lord of the three worlds. Through fault, carelessness, and failure to attend, the lord of the crown punished me. He cursed the forest to burn with fire, its fierce light hot as age-ending flame, and made me suffer in body, waiting for created Phra Narai, the avatar who would come to destroy the demons who are thorns of the world. When I have led the four-armed lord to extinguish the forest fire, I will be released from Phra Isara's curse and return to the divine city of heaven. What are your lord's name and line? From what city are you, royals of the solar line? Why have the three of you dressed as forest ascetics and come wandering here?"

Then radiant Phra Phitsanurak heard and answered: "I am Narai incarnate, offspring of mighty King Thotsarot, crown of the royal seat of Ayutthaya. Phra Lakshmi, this lovely lady, has come as Sida. The king Ananta, lord of serpents, is Phra Lak, my younger brother. I am named Rama, Rama, and I go to kill the asuras, so that the wicked may end in the Krita age and the world may live in happiness. Come, then; let us go extinguish the fire, so that you, goddess, may be released from torment."

Then Lady Saowari, beautiful and pitiful, heard the royal command and saw the lady as four-armed. She bowed her head down to the feet of the bow-bearing lord of the three worlds and led the king onward along the road.

Then the lord of the three worlds, subduer of all, walked and looked as he went. He saw the fire's fierce light, bright as age-ending flame. Its roar was like a black storm-wind blowing until the ring-mountains thundered and collapsed. The air was dark and thick with smoke. His hand lifted the bow. Beautiful as supreme Brahma riding the swan, he drew the mighty wind-arrow, set it to the string, and shot.

The sound roared through the world. Great clouds poured down in a heavy rain, and the fire went out at once by Phra Chakri's mighty power.

Then lovely Lady Saowari saw the fire extinguished and rejoiced. She raised joined hands and bowed to Phra Chakra: "I, your servant, have relied on the feet of the lord of the three worlds, and so have been released from suffering and torment. I ask leave of the four-armed lord. May Your Majesty go subdue the demons and make them fall before the power of your arrows. May your fame be manifest and spread abroad; this is the blessing of the servant at your lotus feet." Having spoken, she paid homage and took leave of Phra Lak and beloved Sida. Then she rose into the sky and went to Mount Kailasa.

Then radiant Phra Harirak Chakrakaeo, having completed the extinguishing of the fire and released lovely Saowari, went on with the three royals of the solar line, each glad in heart. They walked gracefully together along the forest path.

The lord admired the golden mountains, mixed with emerald and sapphire in alternating colors, blazing with jewels whose radiance glittered in the eye. Rainbow light touched pearls; coral gems shone along the cliff hollows. Pointed peaks and clustered summits stood everywhere, sparkling in the sun. Some outcrops overlapped in layers, their shifting light descending by tiers; hanging tassels of patterned stone fell like a shining painted screen. The slopes and cliffs were lovely to see, with shaded trees in beauty. Springs broke through and flowed from the mountain peaks. Many flowers opened and spread their fragrant pollen; bees circled and flew together. The bow-bearing lord admired them as he walked.

They came to a teacher's hermitage at the foot of the mountain, where meditation was cultivated. The place was clean and pleasant to the eye, and they entered to pay homage to the ascetic.

Akkhot's Armor

Then the ascetic Phra Akkhot saw the three glorious royals of the solar line, like a stainless moon with its halo. Their beautiful faces and marks were radiant, their complexion shining in splendor like gold mingled with jewels. They delighted and refreshed the eye. He spoke pleasant words: "Look, beloved grandchildren. What is your solar-line royal family? What are your names, and where is your city? Why have you taken ordination as yogins? Where are the three of you going, enduring such hardship in the mountains and forest?"

Then created Phra Kritsanurak heard the ascetic's words, paid homage, and answered: "We two are of the great imperial line, offspring of victorious King Thotsarot, who ruled Ayutthaya city. I am named Phra Ram Rames. The chief queen is named Sida Thewi. This is Phra Lak, my younger brother. My royal father was about to give me the white umbrella and let me continue the imperial line. Lady Kaiyakesi, lovely queen, grew jealous and demanded the king's vowed truth. She seized the kingdom for Phra Phrot, who was her own son. Phra Phrot would not rule the city and came begging me to return. But I, your grandchild, have accepted my royal father's truth. I endure suffering in the forest, caring nothing for life until the fourteen years are complete."

Then the rishi Phra Akkhot heard Phra Chakri's words. The sage sat in silent thought and understood that this was Narai incarnate, come from the great ocean of milk to cleanse unrighteousness in the three realms. He rejoiced as if he had gained sixteenfold delight. Stroking his back, he spoke sweetly: "Grandfather will tell you an old matter and make it all clear. There was a crooked-hearted demon named Tri Buram, who loved rank and asked a boon of the lord of the world: if anyone struck or killed him, his life and body should not be ended. The lord granted this to the asura, and he grew still more rough and violent. Gods, nagas, and humans could not withstand the demon's dreadful power. The three worlds burned like fire, and Phra Suli was angry like age-ending flame. He came down to kill the demon lord until his life ended. Then he removed the armor from his own body and commanded Grandfather to guard it. If the serpent-line lord from Vaikuntha should come for the great war, I was to give him this armor to wear and use in battle against divine weapons." Saying this, he held out the splendid Surakan armor and offered it to the Avatara. "May you have victory over the asura hosts; beneath heaven may none withstand your fighting power."

Then Phra Harirak of the solar line, bearer of the bow, received the jeweled armor and the blessing of the great ascetic. He was joyful as if he had gained heaven's wealth. The three royals bowed their heads in homage and left the hermitage.

They walked between the mountain slopes until the sun set behind the cliffs. Moonlight shone clear among the clouds, and birds called through the forest. He invited the two beautiful royals of the solar line to rest under the shade of a great sok tree. The wind carried a pleasing scent of pollen, and they slept through the night.

Then the thousand-eyed lord, radiant Indra, sat upon his shining heavenly seat in his splendid palace, with his four queens and the host of heavenly maidens. He had no lasting happiness but felt his heart burn like age-ending fire. Looking down with divine sight, he saw created Phra Chakra with Phra Lak and lovely Sida in the mountain forest, seeking a quiet dwelling in the manner of ascetics, so they could set their minds on vows and cultivate meditation. "I must create a hermitage, pleasant, shaded, quiet, and secluded." Having thought this, he led his divine attendants and flew down to earth.

When he reached the bank of the noble Godavari River, a clean and pleasant place, he created the hermitage buildings.

Three hermitages arose there, shaded by many trees. Clusters of fruit and blooming flowers looked like the vine-groves in Indra's heaven. There was a lotus pond with open fragrant blossoms. The water was clear and unstained, showing the bright gravel and sand below. There were meditation walks and many tiers of terraces and enclosing walls. He wrote letters there as a sign, and the gods returned to the city of heaven.

Then the lord of the three worlds, subduer of all, slept beneath the shade of the tree until the last part of the night passed. The moon and stars moved out of the sky; the sun appeared over the mountain peak, and golden light shone beautifully. Birds and jewel-fowl called out, sweet as music, sending their voices loudly through the forest. Bees flew and circled, singing as they tasted the flower-dust. The lord woke from sleep, invited his chief queen and his younger brother dear as life, and went along the road.

When they arrived, they saw hermitages standing high and splendid at the foot of the cliff: three buildings like heavenly mansions, with walls, terraces, and verandas, meditation walks, open-air places, and pleasant shaded trees. Flowers and fruit hung and swayed. They went into the forest huts.

They saw writing inscribed on the panel, saying that radiant Makhawan had come down and built this place, because he held a sincere intention: he hoped it would be a secluded place for the Avatara Narai. When the sky-passing lord finished reading the message, he rejoiced and spoke to the two royals of the solar line: "This is the hall of Kosi. It is proper for us to live here and perfect the merit of holy conduct." Having spoken, he invited the chief royal lady and created Phra Lak, his younger brother, to walk gracefully together and bathe in the river.

[Sa Burong]

The water was clear as jewel-color. Foam struck the banks with a bright sound. The clean shore was lovely to the eye, and five kinds of lotus stood graceful there. Each one bathed and admired the flowers lifting their stems in bloom. Sattaban leaves mingled with flowers; the scent of pollen flowed richly. Wind passed over the golden lotuses, and petals fell and floated across the stream. Bees carried the taste of flowers as they flew, returning fragrance over the water. The lord chose and plucked golden flowers for the lovely young lady. She admired and cherished the jewel-like blossoms, bright with pleasing color and radiant light: diamond-bright, jewel-bright, shining green, yellow, and white. The three royals swam through the water, cooling themselves in deep happiness.

When the bathing in the river was complete, the wheel-bearing Avatara invited lovely-faced Sida and Phra Lak to go to the leaf hermitage.
