Good Works Translation from Thai
This is the twenty-fifth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Kumphakat's weapon rite in the bamboo forest, Lakshmana's killing of Kumphakat and receipt of Brahma's sword, Thotsakan's forest excursion, Chiwaha's exhausted guard over Lanka, Thotsakan's accidental killing of Chiwaha, Chiwaha's funeral, Sammanakkha's search across the sea, her desire for Rama, her attack on Sida, and Lakshmana's mutilation of Sammanakkha.

Kumphakat and Brahma's Sword
Now I will tell of Kumphakat the yaksha. He lived in victorious Lanka. Lady Sammanakkha was his mother, and his royal father was the yaksha named Chiwaha. When he was nineteen years old, the asura reflected and thought: "I wish to obtain a divine weapon, a mighty one able to subdue even Tusita. I will set up austerity and strengthen my power with the rite of the Great Phat Kalpa." Having thought this, he bathed and cleansed himself, put on bright splendid ornaments, left the demon dwelling, and went to attend upon his father.

When he arrived, he bowed at the feet of his royal mother and father and reported: "Your son has no weapon at all. If enemies or hostile foes arise, I will not be able to fight their power. I ask leave to cross the great ocean and set my mind on performing the rite."

Then his father and mother, both radiant, heard their son, dear as their own life, and were filled with delight and joy. They embraced him, kissed him, stroked his face, and blessed him: "Go, child, and may your wish be fulfilled. May your name and power be famous, and beneath heaven may no one resist you."

Then Kumphakat, demon lord and brave warrior, bowed his head and received the blessing. He displayed his fighting power and flew away.

When he reached the farther bank of Goda, in the Himava bamboo forest, a place overgrown, thickly shaded, quiet in spirit, near the forest road, he saw a shining stone slab, green-patterned like precious stone. It stood between the bamboos, and the asura was glad. He bathed and cleansed his body.

He wore clean white cloth, spread and draped across his shoulder, anointed and marked his face, and bound his matted crest like a yogin. He adorned himself with a shoulder-cord and a strand of fragrant thread, put on a beautiful jeweled rosary, and held incense, candles, and flowers in his hands. Then the asura walked in.

He sat cross-legged according to the manual, closed his eyes, and recited magical spells. He eased the breath in and out, and the demon did not move his body.

By the force of his victorious spell, the earth shook and thundered. The whole forest rang, and the sound reached the heaven of Brahma.

Then supreme Brahma, lord of gods, was seated on his great divine throne in his golden palace. He heard the world in upheaval, strange and clamorous, with a sound like thunder. He looked down with divine sight and saw Kumphakat the asura setting up the rite in the bamboo forest, intending to ask for a divine weapon for battle. "I must give him what he desires."

Having thought this, he took up a sword of brave and mighty power, able to subdue all three worlds, and dropped it down for the demon lord.

Then Kumphakat, mighty and brave, saw the jeweled Surakan sword fall before his face. Strong pride rose in him, and the demon lord frowned in anger. "Bah, look at Brahma! How crude, fearing no demon. I am the nephew of Thotsakan, king of yakshas who can subdue all heaven. It is not fitting to throw the sword down for me. What use is it to take this blade? If it does not reach my hand, I will not accept it. I will keep reciting spells here." Having thought this, the asura collected his senses, closed his eyes, and resumed meditation.

Then Phra Lak, younger brother of the solar line, faithfully served and attended upon his elder brother and moon-bright Sida as if they were his own father and mother, without dislike or aversion. He went searching for fruits, taro, and yams constantly, every day. At dawn he took up the carrying pole, baskets, and shoulder-straps, left the leaf hermitage, and went along the forest path.

Wandering through the deep forest gathering fruit, he turned and came to the bamboo grove. He saw the jeweled sword gleaming, lying there in the forest. His spirit was puzzled and doubtful. "Whose sword has been left here? Perhaps siddhas or masters of knowledge fought one another and battled over Nari-phol maidens, and those of lesser power lost their lives." Having thought this, he set down his basket of taro and yams, picked up the sword, and swung it back and forth.

Then Kumphakat the yaksha, when the light flashed into his eyes, opened them and looked. He thought that supreme Brahma had come down to give him the weapon. Looking closely, he saw it was a forest ascetic swinging the victorious sword like age-ending fire. He grew furiously angry. The demon lord sprang up trembling, stamped his feet, swung his club, gnashed his teeth, and rushed in to attack.

Then blessed radiant Phra Lak glanced aside and saw the asura leaping in to attack him. He swung the powerful sword, graceful and splendid like the lord who rides the swan. Displaying his force and power, he rushed straight in and grappled with the demon.

With his right foot he pressed the demon's left knee, intent on killing him and ending his life. They turned and grappled in confusion, each stabbing and cutting as they fought.

Then mighty Kumphakat, the powerful yaksha, fought close without caring for life. Finding his moment, he ran suddenly forward.

He leapt and seized Phra Lak, pressing him hard with fierce strength. He swung his club in confusion, striking left and right without pause.

Then Phra Lak of the solar line, bearer of the bow, fought and resisted, closing in to kill and make war.

His left foot pressed the demon's right shoulder. His hand snatched away the yaksha's club. Quick and skillful in that moment, he swung the mighty sword and struck with full strength. Kumphakat could not endure it. His head flew off and he fell upon the surface of the earth.

When the younger brother of the Avatara had finished killing the demon lord, he gathered many fruits and hurried back to the forest hut.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet of his radiant elder brother and reported: "Your little servant met an asura in the bamboo forest. I fought him in battle, and the demon lord's life ended." He told the matter as he had understood it, then offered the mighty sword.

Then Phra Narai of the solar line, bearer of the bow, received the splendid jeweled sword. The king looked at it and was glad. Stroking his younger brother's back, he spoke with command: "Father of my life, you went and killed the asura, gained victory, and brought this sword back. I see that it is a divine weapon, not a human thing beneath the sky. Its power can subdue the whole world. Jewel of my eyes, keep it for your hand." Having spoken, he returned the sword and gave a joyful blessing: "May enemies and wicked bands who come to fight never be able to resist you anywhere in the world."

Then radiant Phra Lak raised joined hands to receive Phra Chakri's blessing and the sword of the lord of gods. He rejoiced as if he had gained heaven's wealth. Then he offered the fruit, taro, and yams he had gathered, sour and sweet things of many kinds, together with honeycomb and fresh water-chestnuts, delicious forest foods. When this was done, he bowed farewell and came to the king's dwelling.

Then the radiant Avatara, since he had come to dwell by the Godavari, found it quiet and secluded. He cultivated meditation and guarded his mind, making the fire rite by sacred practice every day without fail. The king took delight in spirit.

Thotsakan Kills Chiwaha
Then the ten-headed yaksha, Thotsakan, enjoyed vast wealth in the island city of Lanka, with lovely Montho as his chief queen. The host of women numbered sixteen thousand, all lovely in form and pleasing to the heart, their faces like heavenly nymphs. Slender, graceful, and beautiful, they took turns in their appointed service, singing, dancing, and attending the king. The lutes and orchestras sounded sweetly. His happiness was like that of Makhawan dwelling in his splendid palace.

He thought that he wished to wander through the forest, to admire the trees upon the mountains. So he walked gracefully out into the royal hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the shining white umbrella. The demon hosts bowed their heads in homage all around him. He spoke a royal command to Chiwaha the yaksha: "We will go play in the forest for perhaps seven nights. You are mighty in power, another eye and another heart for your elder brother. Stay and guard the city. Let no danger or harm arise." Having spoken, he ordered his ministers to prepare the brave soldiers, the splendid royal chariot, and every officer outside and inside.

Then the great minister Mahothon received the command, crawled away, and left the radiant victory hall.

He arranged the Diamond-Garland battle procession, the kind that had followed forest excursions before. One group wore graceful purple shirts and stood with stone-bit shields in hand. One group wore red shirts and swung spears like turning wheels. One group wore sandal-colored shirts and held bows and arrows. One group wore black shirts and raised dancing halberds in their hands. Horse flankers, elephants, tusk-fighters, camp-guards, and breach-makers crowded together. The royal chariot and attendant chariots stood in rows along the road, packed tight in loud confusion, each one waiting for the asura king.

Then Thotsakan, yaksha of the solar line, slept through the night with lovely Montho. When the rising sun glowed and golden light shone through the sky, he invited his beloved wife, dear as life, and went to bathe.

The jeweled lotus-water pipes were opened, sending out fragrant water, sweet and splendid in scent. The king put on naga-patterned trousers and a red lower robe. The lady wore a golden garment with a brocade shoulder-cloth patterned with interwoven vines. The demon lord put on a side-cloth, breast ornaments with incised pattern, and a chain. The lady wore shining jeweled armlets, a girdle, necklaces, and jeweled breast ornaments. The king wore gold with coiling dragon-work and bright ornaments in every direction. Each wore glittering diamond rings, jeweled crowns, and trembling flower-earrings. They descended from the great victorious palace and went with the host of women.

They were beautiful like supreme Brahma floating down from the shining sky. When they reached the radiant jeweled mounting-place, the asura entered the splendid chariot.

O chariot, royal chariot: its hubs and rims shone with jewels. Its yoke curved beautifully, gleaming with gold, and its throne was adorned throughout with figures of gods. It was yoked with royal lions that leapt and bounded like spinning wheels. The charioteer drove swiftly and firmly. All the splendid royal insignia were complete. Pipes, gongs, and drums sounded together, sweet in the ear, ringing loudly in a great roar. The sound shook the earth, and dust blew up to cover the clouds. Attendant chariots followed in proper order, handsome and graceful with their curved finials. The demon soldiers shouted in a great commotion, and the army marched into the forest.

He invited his chief queen and the women, lesser and greater, to descend from the shining jeweled chariot and walk along the road.

They turned and wound about, admiring birds as they flew and settled on the trees: golden-necked birds in khontha trees, mynas in kaeo trees speaking to one another, kaling birds on kalong branches, flocks of swans in kathang trees, dok-bua birds on sattaban branches, doves calling on golden takhian trees, gulls on inthanin, quails calling loudly from krathin, owls in mok trees watching from the side, kaeo birds calling in ket trees by the road, parrots on taeo trees high on the hill, peacocks in yang trees dancing and waving their tails, waterhens on hukwang branches, middle birds arranged in rows, karavek birds flying and settling in wa trees, and nok-khla birds circling and settling on khlai. The lord led the lady walking with graceful steps and took delight in the viewing.

When the sunlight leaned toward afternoon, he had the brave troops, great and small, halt. They set up the victorious pavilion and camped in the middle of the forest.

Then Chiwaha the yaksha, after Thotsakan the asura had gone out from Lanka, mustered the demon forces and divided the guard-duties. Forts, camps, battle towers, gates, and every opening along the walls were assigned. He inspected every station; there were reserves and relief companies. Guards sat by firelight in changing watches, and he ordered and rebuked them in restless noise.

As for the asura king himself, he could not sleep even for a little while. Afraid that some dangerous event might arise, he kept circling the royal city.

Then Thotsakan the yaksha had wandered the forest for seven nights and was happy in pleasure. He ordered Mahothon the minister: "Prepare the brave soldiers and troops. Have them ready in the night. We will return to the royal moon-palace."

Then Mahothon the diligent minister received the demon king's command, bowed in homage, and went out.

He had the jeweled chariot, horses, and troops, lesser and greater, prepared, with shield-guards and flankers outside and inside, all ready and waiting for the asura king.

Then Thotsakan, yaksha of the solar line, slept in the golden pavilion with lovely Queen Montho. The heavenly women of the court took turns attending him, plucking and bowing strings, their blended sound like divine music. They played and sang continuously, lamenting melodies and sweet strains. Listening for pleasure, the demon king fell asleep.

When the moon and stars moved from the sky and the sun appeared over the mountain peak, the voices of birds rang through the forest, and jewel-fowl began to call through the groves. The king woke from sleep, invited the smooth-skinned chief queen, bathed and delighted his body, dressed in shining splendid ornaments, then mounted the Surakan chariot with young Montho, his queen. He ordered the ministers and troops to break camp and return into Lanka city.

He saw many four-footed beings: great lions, wild cattle, buffalo, rhinoceroses, elephants, deer, antelope, and tigers wandering along the forest edge. He halted the victorious royal chariot and ordered ten divisions of soldiers to spread like wings and surround them, blocking them in and catching the game.

Then the demon soldiers received the command and gladly ran in pursuit, shouting and urging one another in great noise.

Some stabbed, some seized, all mixed together in forest confusion. They ate, played, danced, and shouted until the sun's light was nearly gone.

Then Chiwaha, brave in war, after guarding the royal city, had lost sleep while patrolling for seven days and seven nights. He had not slept even once. Drowsy, worn down, and faint in spirit, he wished to rest his body. Yet he feared enemies might suddenly enter and plunder the lovely city. When evening came and the sun's light faded, the asura transformed his body.

He became as great as supreme Brahma, towering high over the sky. He stretched out his tongue and covered Lanka, and the asura fell into deep sleep.

As for the demon troops, no one inspected anything. Sitting guards snored, lying guards snored, comfortable in sleep, murmuring senselessly.

Then Thotsakan, yaksha of the solar line, ended the chase in happiness at night. He turned the royal chariot back, recalled the fourfold army, and left the deep forest to return to the royal seat of Lanka.

The chariot and the ten divisions hurried across mountains, fields, and forest openings. Around the second watch of the night, they came to the victorious city.

He saw only thick darkness and could not recognize his own city. He was puzzled and doubtful in spirit. "Why has it become like this? Has an enemy come to oppress us, killed Chiwaha the yaksha, and used power to cover the royal city? Will they fight with me, the victorious one?" Having thought this, he spoke: "Hey, ministers and brave soldiers. Go in and see what has happened in the royal city. Call the guards of the forts and the palace walls, and Chiwaha the yaksha, who stayed to guard the city. Learn clearly whether things are good or bad."

Then the demon soldiers on the left and right received the order, bowed farewell, and all went in together.

Each one shouted and called out, their voices making the ground and earth shake. The noise went round the victorious city, but there was no one to answer.

Then Thao Raphanasun the yaksha burned with furious anger. The asura sprang up and stood firm. Ten mouths gnashed teeth and ground jaws; he cried and roared like thunder. His eyes were red like age-ending fire. Twenty hands held every weapon. He urged on the chariot and the ten companies of troops, swung the divine discus, raised it high, and hurled it with his power. Its light flashed like lightning before the eyes.

It blazed, lighting the whole land, and struck Chiwaha the yaksha's tongue. The tongue flew away from his body, and his life ended at once.

Then the soldiers, lesser and greater, stationed in forts, camps, and victorious gates, together with the patrol companies outside and inside, and all the women and men in the city, saw that Chiwaha had died. They were frightened as if life would end. Pale-faced and trembling, each carried children and led grandchildren; some ran and some crawled in noisy confusion. Thinking that enemies had come to attack, the whole city fled.

Then Thotsakan, yaksha of the solar line, heard the great noise and saw Lanka, the demon city. He rejoiced, laughed, and clapped his hands loudly. He gave command for the soldiers to break the gates.

Then the forward troops, having received the lord of Lanka's command, ran in with demon commotion. Some battered and some cut in confusion. The iron gates broke and could not withstand them. Men and women inside the victorious city were frightened, crying and running in disorder.

Then Thotsakan the yaksha had the jeweled chariot driven into Lanka city.

When he reached the forecourt, he saw Chiwaha the demon yaksha struck by the discus, his life ended. The asura was shocked and afraid. Looking on the face of his younger brother-in-law, he was full of grief and sighed deeply. He came to the bright jeweled mounting-place and stood stunned, unable to speak. Then he descended from the royal chariot with Queen Montho, went up into the jeweled palace, and entered the splendid sleeping chamber.

Then lovely Lady Sammanakkha learned that her royal husband had been struck by her elder brother's discus-weapon and that his life and birth were ended. Terrified and shaken, she sprang up, beat her breast in confusion, loosened her hair, and ran there at once.

When she arrived, she embraced the feet of her royal husband, the yaksha. Her mind was senseless, and she wept and sobbed in grief.

"Alas, crown of your wife! What karma has struck you? What a waste of your hardship and care, wandering and inspecting the troops around the royal dwelling and its district, seven nights and seven days without stopping. At bathing time you did not bathe in water; at sleeping time you did not sleep for a moment. You were honest and deeply loyal to your elder brother, guarding the city and waiting. I hoped I could entrust my body to you. Alas, was it right to have no mercy? Even if my husband had done wrong, it would have been proper to say so before ending his life." As she lamented, she looked on her husband's face, grieving as if life would end.

When her spirit slowly returned, the demon woman was furious, trembling. Her two eyes were like age-ending fire. She rushed away to the lord of Lanka's palace.

When she arrived, she stood shouting from far away: "Why did my supreme elder brother take his wife to play in the forest and leave my husband to guard the city? Night and day he went inspecting every company of demon soldiers. He had no time to eat or sleep, not for a moment, so that no danger or harm would arise. Your Majesty returned and did not ask questions. Angry and hasty as burning fire, you ended his life. What fault was there? Say it."

Then Thotsakan, yaksha of the solar line, saw his younger sister angry and grieving, shouting from far away. Through love and regret for his brother-in-law, he raised his face and wept. He rose from the shining jeweled couch and went to receive the lady.

When he reached her, he took her hand and led her up to the pearl couch. After receiving her spirit, he spoke by command: "You who share my spirit, do not be angry. As for your husband, beautiful one, whose life and body are ended, I loved him like the pupil of my eye. There was no fault in him. All this is the fruit of karma come to destroy, making the yaksha's mind think wrongly. Who would guard a city by acting like this? I thought an enemy had come to seize the victory city. They shouted and called many times, but not one person answered. Thinking the great city was lost, I was vexed and threw the discus, hoping to finish the hostile foe and end his life. I did not know it was my own younger brother-in-law." Speaking, he wept in grief.

When his grief eased, he soothed her with kind words: "Do not mourn and weep. Once karma has acted, life must end. Do not resent your elder brother, goddess."

Then the demon woman Sammanakkha heard those sweet words and her grief gradually eased. She bowed her head in homage at the feet of her supreme elder brother, then walked back gracefully to her own dwelling.

Then Thao Raphanasun, mighty in power, thought of Chiwaha, his beloved brother-in-law, who had been loyal to the demon king. He could neither sit nor rise in peace, nor sleep, until the sun's light grew strong. He left the shining jeweled chamber and went out to the radiant Surakan hall.

He spoke a royal command to the great diligent minister: "Quickly go and muster everyone. Build a golden funeral pyre, finely made and complete with all ornaments. We will cremate Chiwaha the asura according to the custom of solar-line kings. Do not delay; have it finished today."

Then Pao Wanasun the yaksha received the command of the lord who ruled the earth, raised joined hands in homage, and went out.

He mustered every company and department, lesser and greater, and they raised a splendid royal pyre. It was completed according to the command.

Then they invited Chiwaha the demon's body onto the golden victorious chariot and brought it to the great royal pyre, into the shining high pavilion.

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king and Queen Sammanakkha went to the place at the base of the funeral fire.

Each asked pardon and farewell. They lit the fire, blazing splendidly, according to lasting royal good order. When it was finished, they returned.

Sammanakkha Sees Rama
Then lovely Lady Sammanakkha, ever since she became widowed of her husband, was restless and shaken in heart. She wished to find a companion who would join with her in love. She bathed, put on splendid ornaments, and went up to attend upon the asura king.

When she arrived, she bowed with joined hands at the feet of her elder brother, Thotsakan, and reported: "Your younger sister has no happiness even for a moment. My beloved son has left my breast, and my husband too has lost his life. Kumphakat the asura crossed the great ocean and went to cultivate power in his rite. He has been gone long and has not returned. This weighs heavily on my heart. I ask leave to go wandering in the forest to search for him."

Then Thotsakan of the created solar line heard his younger sister lament and answered by command: "If you will cross the ocean, let it be as your own heart wishes, lovely lady. But do not stay away for many nights. Goddess, hurry back."

Then lovely Lady Sammanakkha heard the royal words and rejoiced as if she had gained the shore of heaven. She bowed at the feet of the yaksha king, her face bright as moonlight, smiled and laughed in happiness, and returned to her glittering jeweled chamber.

She bathed and put on fragrant perfume, powdered her shining smooth face, and wore pierced-pattern white cloth worked with dancing kinnari designs. She wore a gold-brocade shoulder-cloth with ruby colors, a jeweled girdle mixed with yellow sapphire, and nine-gem ornaments bright with gems. Gold bracelets and jeweled breast ornaments shone; chains flashed like fireflies. She wore a jeweled crown with floating scrollwork and diamond ear-ornaments glittering before the eye. Dressed in fresh beauty and pleasing form, arching her manner to resemble Mekhala, she moved gracefully, shifting her eyes, and left the victorious city.

She wandered and patrolled in search of a companion, but saw no one who pleased her eyes. Her desire grew still more troubled and overwhelming, and she flew across the ocean by her power.

When she reached the shore across the sea, she walked along the forest line, searching in every place until she came to the Godavari.

Then the radiant jeweled Chakri was keeping his vow and fire rite in the manner of a forest yogin. He dwelt in the divine hall that Kosi had bestowed and made for him, free from grief, sickness, and danger, intent on meditation and guarding absorption. With Phra Lak and beautiful Sida, the three lived in happiness and welfare. No enemy or demon band came to trouble the hermitage.

When dawn was near and golden light approached, the birds called loudly. As he was accustomed to bathe in the water, he went down.

Then lovely Lady Sammanakkha looked and saw Phra Chakra, beautiful and bright in form. Looking carefully over his whole body, she was filled with wonder and doubt. "If this is radiant Phra Isuan, he has no naga chain. If this is mighty Phra Narai, I do not see four arms. If this is the lord Brahma, why does he not have four faces? If this is the thousand-eyed lord, why does he not bear the thunderbolt weapon? If this is the Sun, then the Sun is drawing his chariot in the clouds. If this is the Moon, it would be wrong for him to leave the sky. Perhaps he is an emperor king who has abandoned wealth and become a yogin." The more she looked, the more passion overwhelmed her. The taste of love swarmed over her like fire. Her breast and heart were senseless, and the asura woman was maddened and dazed in spirit.

Then Phra Chakri, brave and wise, after he had finished bathing in the water, returned to the hermitage.

Then Sammanakkha the yaksha woman saw him come up from the river and walk to the leaf hall. She craned her neck and watched him until he vanished from sight. Grieving with longing, she walked about and looked, but did not see him return. The asura woman sighed deeply. She waited until the sun's color ended and moonlight shone bright. When she saw a shining jeweled cave, she entered it and slept there.

She lay down against the mountain, lifted her hand across her face, and yearned. The form of the powerful lord clung to her eyes, and desire burned and writhed many times over. "What shall I do, poor heart, to enjoy that beautiful form? Does he know that this younger woman hopes to entrust her life and dwelling to him?" As she lamented, she heard birdsong. "Ah, is the lord calling me?" She sprang up, turned and looked everywhere, reaching out, but did not find the king. She sank down, embraced her hands, and sat stunned in thought. Passion burned in her mind like a poisoned arrow. She kept rising, sitting, and lying down, sighing again and again. "O beloved lord of your younger one, why do you not come to me, making me endure suffering alone in longing?" From the first watch of the night, she could find no happiness, only lying, sitting, and mad confusion of heart, until dawn shone over the world.

Then Phra Hariwong, blessed and radiant, performed the fire offering at the fire-pit and collected his senses in meditation. When the moon and stars moved from the sky and the sun appeared over the mountain peak, he left the leaf hall and went down to the water landing.

Then Lady Sammanakkha, most pitiful, was hidden at the mouth of the Surakan cave. Seeing the Avatara come, she felt gladness and delight. "Today my wish will be fulfilled." Having thought this, she recited magical knowledge, and the asura woman transformed her body.

Then lovely Lady Sammanakkha, hidden by the road, saw the lord of her heart. Filled with love and desire, wishing to enjoy closeness with him, she walked gracefully, glancing with her eyes, and came in to bow with joined hands.

Then the radiant lord of the serpent line looked and saw a woman of beautiful form and loveliness. She was dainty, charming, and tender, lovely as a heavenly nymph, her face bright as the moon. The righteous lord was puzzled and doubtful. "In this empty Himava forest, one woman could not come alone. Is she a naga woman of heaven, a yakshini, a forest ghost using deceit? Has she changed her body by some trick in order to attack my vow?" The more he looked, the more he wondered. The sky-passing lord spoke: "What is your name? Where is your city, lovely one? Why have you come alone into this difficult forest?"

Then Lady Sammanakkha, most pitiful, heard the flavor of his speech, like the nectar of heaven, lord of her heart. It thrilled every hair-pore. She glanced sharply aside and raised joined hands. "I am named Sammanakkha, a young woman, younger sister of Lord Thotsakan. I dwell in Lanka, the royal seat, delightful as the heaven of Tavatimsa. My relatives would have me take a companion and join with the yaksha line, but I did not intend it in my heart. I fled out into the forest. Merit has led me to meet the powerful lord, fulfilling the thought of the servant at his beautiful feet. I ask to live and serve in the hermitage until my life and breath are gone."

Then Phra Chakri, brave and wise, heard the demon woman's words. The sky-passing lord answered: "Look, younger sister of Thotsakan, of the great solar-line yaksha family. Why speak like this, beautiful one? It is contrary to right nature. Do not say it. I am keeping vows as a rishi. I do not desire such things. Hurry back to your city and remain in lasting happiness."

Then Sammanakkha, beloved in her own eyes, heard the king's command and answered with a sharp, sidelong look: "Alas, is it right, beautiful lord, to cast off and cut away the love of this younger woman? Show me some mercy; do not abandon my heart. Even if it is contrary to rank and nature, what does that matter? Kinnari women enjoy love with rishis. I too am female. I will love and be loyal to the powerful lord. I ask to remain as the king's devoted woman, serving his feet with honest heart, sharing suffering, heat, and life, with no thought of returning to the city."

Then Phra Harirak, jeweled Chakri and lord, heard this and answered: "Why speak like this, with no shame? You are a misshapen courtesan, uglier than other women, coming to tease and harass a man: a wicked woman, deceitful and unrighteous. Hurry, hurry back. If not, your life will end." Having spoken, he walked away to the forest hut.

Then Sammanakkha the yaksha woman heard the lord's scolding words as if divine water had been mixed into her heart. Her passion grew still stronger; she paid no weight to the harsh words. She craned her neck and watched him go, her heart writhing many times over. Darkened and unable to bear desire, as if her heart would break on the spot, her senses failed, and she hurried after him.

When she reached the forest hall, she shifted her eyes and searched. Then she saw the chief royal lady, beautiful in form and splendid in appearance, slender and graceful through all her body, more beautiful than all women in the three worlds. She possessed wonderful grace, her face bright as the moon. Though Sammanakkha herself was female, she stared in amazement and was stunned in delight. "So this is why the lord of the sky has no longing and cuts me off without care. I must end her life and take her husband for myself." Having thought this, she displayed her power and turned back into asura form.

She gnashed her teeth until the sound rang. Her two eyes blazed like fire. She entered the forest hut and chased lovely Sida, pinching, scratching, and striking her.

Then young Sida, most lovely and pitiful, was frightened and ran from the demon woman, as if her life would be destroyed.

Pale-faced, trembling, and terrified, she was in utter disorder. She cried and screamed in fear: "King, save my life!"

Then Phra Hariwong, blessed and radiant, saw the yaksha woman chasing the queen. The king burned with fury. He snatched up the bow and arrow. The four-armed lord swung and raised it, chasing and striking the asura, lashing left and right in confusion.

Then Phra Lak of the created solar line was in the forest hall and heard the loud commotion. Looking out, he saw the yaksha woman chasing his elder sister, while his elder brother guarded and blocked the way before her. He too burned with fury and came out to seize the asura woman.

Then Sammanakkha the yaksha woman glanced and saw Phra Chakri, whose form was supreme in grace and splendor. Smooth and bright like fine gold, he made her desire and love increase. Bewildered, dazed, and staring, the lady forgot Phra Rama. Looking at Phra Hariwong, bearer of the discus, she forgot Phra Lak the younger brother. "If I had both of them in love, I would cherish them equally." But when she saw that Sida was more beautiful than herself, she scratched her head in rage, hands trembling, and leapt in, attacking, meaning to kill the queen.

Then the two radiant blessed princes were furious, angry as fire, and rushed in to fight the asura.

Phra Lak swung the royal sword, came out, and blocked her in front. Mighty Phra Harirak raised the great bow.

Sammanakkha, crazed still more in mind, kept attacking smooth-skinned Sida. Mighty Phra Chakrakrit struck down upon the asura's body. Phra Lak leapt in and kicked the yaksha woman. She turned, staggered, and immediately fell to the ground. He leapt up, stepped on her breast, and swung the shining victorious sword. Then he roared a command: "Hey, wicked demon woman. You are common, misshapen, foul, ugly, and shameless. Why have you done this? Do you not fear that your life may die?"

"If I killed you, people in the world would speak ill of it afterward. I will leave you alive, but I will do enough to satisfy my heart." As he spoke, he cut off her hands and feet; her nose and ears were cut and blood flowed. Then he chased and struck her again and again until she was far from the forest hut.
