Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the twenty-sixth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Sammanakkha's flight to Romkhan, her report to Khon, Khon's attack on the Godavari hermitage and death by Rama's Brahmastra, Thut's cavalry attack and death, Tri Sian's elephant attack, and Rama's killing of Tri Sian after the destruction of the demon hosts.

Translation

Sammanakkha Reaches Khon

Then Sammanakkha the yaksha woman was hurt and bruised through all her body, as if her life would end. To go away was grief beyond measure; to stay was fear of death. She ran and kept looking back at the righteous prince until she reached Romkhan city.

Then King Khon the yaksha came out before the decorated royal court, with his ministers and mighty troops around him. He saw his younger sister, born of the same womb, with hands and feet cut short, blood flowing, and with ears, mouth, and nose gashed away. His whole body started in shock. It was as if brutal Time itself had come to cut the hair from his head. He leapt down from the jeweled throne and went to receive the young lady.

He spoke a royal word: "My life, my sister, dear and pitiful one, why are you like this, beautiful lady? Who has come and shamed you?"

Then lovely Sammanakkha bowed at her brother's feet and gave her lament, turning the story toward good appearance for herself. "At first our elder brother Thotsakan took his chief queen and went out to amuse himself in the forest. He left my husband to guard the royal city. In misery he kept patrolling tightly for seven days and seven nights without pause. At last he stretched his tongue over the city by his power, grew drowsy, and fell asleep.

"When our great elder brother returned and asked questions, no one could be found. In anger he seized his mighty discus, hurled it, and struck my husband, so that his life ended. Since then this younger sister has had sorrow beyond sorrow, separation beyond separation, and grief beyond grief. To stay in the palace tormented me, like lying in the middle of a fire at the age's end.

"So I took leave of my elder brother and went wandering in the forest, hoping to ease my grief. I reached a river in the middle of the wilderness, named Godavari. There I met two humans dressed as forest ascetics, with one woman living in the beautiful woodland. Seeing that I was a woman, the two ascetics followed after me. They teased me, jested with me, touched me rudely, drew close, and tried to lure me with desire. I had no wish or intention for them. Then they were angry and cruelly beat me. Together they cut off my hands and feet; my mouth, nose, and ears were nearly cut away to death. They treated me as if I had no family or lineage." The lady reported this while weeping.

Then Phraya Khon, powerful yaksha, heard it and his rage increased a hundredfold. Anger pressed upon his heart like fire. He stood up, stamped his foot, and cried out; the earth roared and trembled. "Ha! Ha! Humans no greater than a web-spider! What family, what race, from where have they come? They act proudly and boast of power, not knowing the solar race of yakshas. I will cut them down so that the shame will not cling to our throats. Only then will their insult be repaid." Having spoken, he gave royal command: "Hey, demon ministers, diligent ones. Prepare the hosts of yaksha troops. I will go fight the enemy."

Then the great yaksha minister received the asura king's command, raised joined hands, and crawled away.

He arranged the fourfold army of warriors, choosing only those skilled and fierce. Elephant lords mounted tusk-victorious elephants and held curved spears upright. Horse lords mounted Sindhava horses and held lances, racing in circles like turning wheels. Chariot lords mounted their chariots together, with bows and poisoned arrows in hand. Infantry commanders inspected the battle troops; all held terrible weapons. They swung them, displaying their power, with no thought of shrinking from the foe.

Then King Khon the yaksha, when dawn brightened the earth, entered the bathing place.

They opened the thousand streams of scented divine flower-water. He put on curved-edged trousers and a fig-colored waistcloth wrapped about him. Fluttering side-cloths shook at their ends. A diamond-and-ruby scale-coat covered him, with a Surakan breast-band and chained sash, a jeweled girdle with fine gold-work, bracelets, armlets, and rings. Then he wore the great crown, with emerald ear-ornaments like garuda eggs, and put on the full battle ornaments proper to his body. Beautiful as supreme Brahma going forth to ride the swan, he seized his powerful bow and mounted the radiant jeweled chariot.

O chariot, royal war chariot: its hubs and rims were crystal jewels set with colors. Its curved yoke was delicate, all jewel-work, with radiance flashing to the eyes. It was yoked with two thousand royal lions, and the charioteer held firm at the front. Elephant lords drove tusk-victorious elephants; horse lords drove thought-swift horses. Infantry lords drove the soldiers; their shouts shook the earth. Chariot lords drove swiftly, packed tight across the ground. Gongs, drums, trumpets, and conches sounded in thunder; dust hid the sky. They urged horses, chariots, elephants, and troops, driving one another onward in confusion.

They came to the hermitage. He ordered the yaksha warriors: "Hurry in and surround the hut. Bring out the two ascetic brothers."

Then the demon soldiers heard the royal command, and the asuras drove one another in.

They surrounded the four-armed lord's hermitage on every side, troop after troop beyond counting. Their shouts rang through the forest, while officers moved about inspecting the men and striking them into order.

Then the jeweled discus-lord, seated with Phra Lak and lovely Sida before the leaf-hut, saw the demon hosts and asuras, fierce and shouting in a clamor, waving their weapons in tumult as they rushed in to surround the hut. He spoke to Phra Lak: "Beloved younger brother, my other life, these heavy troops of yaksha warriors have come out. I think they are family and kin of that Sammanakkha. I will go and destroy the asuras. You guard the lovely lady." Having ordered this, he took up his bow, splendid like the lord of the discus, aiming to slaughter the demons, and quickly left the dwelling.

Then the troops of Phraya Khon saw the royal lord with the great victorious bow in his hand. Each displayed power until the ten directions thundered and shook. They ran, rushed, and packed together, surrounding, hunting, and killing in battle.

Then Phra Hariwong, radiant and blessed, parried, guarded, and fought them hand to hand, pressing into the combat. His royal hand swung the bow with proud speed like a turning wheel. He struck left and swept right through the confusion, and the yakshas died scattered in heaps.

Then the demon host saw that this human had power and was killing asuras to destruction. Angry, gnashing their teeth, they charged and swarmed in. They shot, thrust, stabbed, and slashed in tumult; their shouts rang in earth-shaking confusion.

Then the jeweled discus-lord saw that the demon host died but did not become thin to the eye, and kept pressing thickly in to destroy him. He drew up the Brahmastra and set it on the string. With graceful movement he pulled and aimed, intending to kill the countless demon troops, and the sky-passing lord shot.

The sound thundered through the sky. Asuras died in heaps beyond counting. Warriors, horses, chariots, and elephants all perished utterly by its power.

Then King Khon, powerful yaksha, saw his troops' lives spent and fell into rage like the age-ending fire. He roared a lion-roar and stamped his feet until all trembled. Holding his weapon ready in his hand, he ordered Lothan to drive the chariot in. He cried: "Hey, hey, ascetic! What are you? What is your race and name, that your heart is so proud and boastful? You cut the hands and feet of my sister and looked down on me without fearing my power. I am the younger brother of Thotsakan, ruler of the Romkhan realm. My royal name is Phraya Khon, with power surpassing heaven. You are an ascetic who does not stand in dharma. I will take your life now."

Then the radiant Narai of the solar line heard him and answered: "I am named Rama, Rama, shoot of King Thotsarot, lord of the world and its support. I accepted my royal father's pledge and came into the forest to practice the vow. Wicked Sammanakkha came troubling me, inviting men with desire. However much she was driven off, she would not go, so we did to that Kali-woman what satisfied the matter. And are you her elder brother, solar and Brahma-born, radiant in line? Your sister came and acted like this, and you still approve of her. Hey, hey, yaksha lord, do not act in rash arrogance. Go back to Romkhan, and your life will not end."

Then Phraya Khon, brave and mighty in heart, heard this and grew angry like the fire of Time. He struck his hand with a sharp clap and answered: "Ha! Look at this ascetic, speaking lies, no truth at all. A woman inviting men without shame: whose custom is that, and from what place?" Having spoken, he drew his arrow to the string, fixed his mind on killing, pulled it with the strength of his power, and the asura shot.

It cracked and cracked like thunder. The earth shook in fear. The weapon fell as a flame and burned in a ring around the four-armed lord.

Then Phra Chakrakrit, mighty bearer of the bow, drew the powerful Phlai Wat arrow and the royal lord shot at once.

Its sound rang through the sixteen worlds. It became an acid rain that washed away the yaksha's arrow, breaking it to pieces, and the fire was extinguished with it.

Then Phraya Khon, strong and energetic in power, continued the war, fighting in close contest, intent on ending Rama's life. He seized the fierce Chakraphan Phang arrow, full of brave power, and shot it with force. Its sound thundered through the forest.

The victorious arrow struck the royal bow of radiant Phra Harirak. By the asura's force the bow broke apart and flew from the lord's hand.

Then the Avatara, skilled in war, when the demon's arrow had struck and broken the royal bow, thought: "This Lord Khon is capable; his weapon can destroy my own weapon. I sustain the three worlds, yet I have nothing now for battle. Let Phra Phirun bring me the royal bow of Ramasun the yaksha, so I may destroy this asura at once, without delay."

Then Phra Phirun, brave god, knew that the blessed lord of the discus was fighting with a dark-hearted yaksha, and that the royal bow had now been broken. "He will take the artful bow of Ramasun the asura to destroy the thorn of the earth." Knowing this, he took the powerful bow that shakes the three worlds, left his bright jeweled palace, and flew to the Godavari.

When he arrived, he went straight in and offered it to radiant Phra Narai. Then he took leave and flew by his power back to his palace in the city of heaven.

Then the three-world lord, destroyer of worlds, received Ramasun the asura's bow and rejoiced as if he had gained the sixteen heavens. He drew the Agniwat arrow and set it on the string, beautiful like the sun with its halo. Aiming at the tip of the chariot-yoke, the glorious lord shot.

It struck the weapon of Lord Khon the yaksha and broke it apart, unable to withstand its strength. The royal lions and charioteer perished, and the victorious chariot was smashed to pieces.

Then Phraya Khon, powerful yaksha, saw that the human had shot a missile to oppose him and was deeply bewildered. "Just now I shot the bow from his hand and saw it broken clearly. How has this forest ascetic obtained another powerful bow for battle? He destroys my weapons; my demon troops have lost their lives. The more I think, the more strange it is." The yaksha stood stunned in all his body. Alone, shaken in heart, he turned his face left and right. Seeing a great rang tree, he rejoiced and leapt toward it swiftly.

He braced his foot against it, set his shoulder, and pulled hard. The roots shook and trembled. He rocked and hauled it in wild confusion, grimacing and gnashing his teeth in the effort.

He tore it out by his fierce strength, lifted it high, and swung it like a turning wheel. He rushed in and swarmed to fight, the yaksha pursuing and pressing hard.

Then Phra Hariwong, radiant and blessed, parried and turned it aside in time, swiftly changing his battle stance. The yaksha struck with the great rang tree, but it could not hit the lord who bears the conch. It broke into useless splinters. The king charged and seized the asura. The yaksha snatched at the bow; the four-armed lord struck him with it. He staggered and reeled back and forth beneath the lord's victorious power.

Then Phraya Khon, brave and mighty in heart, was hurt and bruised as if he would be destroyed. Still proud and willful, he gnashed his teeth, sprang up at once, and, angry and rash, leapt with fierce heart. His body trembled as he reached to lift a mountain.

The stone broke apart, shattering into sparks like acid fire. He returned to the close fight without ceasing, with the reckless strength of an asura.

Phra Narai struck with the bow; Lord Khon hurled the mountain. The sound thundered in tumult, as if the sky had split a hundred thousand times.

Then Phra Hariwong, radiant and blessed, pressed and pursued him in close battle. The asura could not withstand him. Rama drew the Brahmastra and set it on the string, intending to destroy Phraya Khon. He pulled with mighty power, and the royal lord shot.

Its sound was like the black wind. The whole universe shook. It struck the chest and cut out the heart, and the yaksha died by its power.

Then all the classes of gods saw Phra Harirak, the lord of the discus, kill the asura and end his life. Each one rejoiced, leaning from jeweled windows and clapping hands. "This time the three worlds will have ease, because the Avatara subdues the yakshas. The bands of foolish asuras will be ended by the power of his arrows." They praised Phra Harirak with shouts of "Sadhu," and every god smiled with bright face. They scattered divine golden flowers thickly down from heaven. Strings, bows, drums, and wind instruments sounded in lamenting strains, their noise filling the whole city of heaven.

Then the three-world lord, destroyer of worlds, when he had finished killing the asura, returned to the forest hut.

Thut Attacks Rama

Then the remaining demon troops who had survived in the forest saw their asura king destroyed. Fear was heavier than any fear they had known. Unable to stop or rest, they ran struggling through the woodland and went straight to the provincial city.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet and reported to Phraya Thut the yaksha: "Now Your Majesty's elder brother raised his army and went to fight a human forest ascetic. The sky-passing lord died by an arrow's light. Chariots, elephants, horses, and all the warrior companies are gone."

Then Lord Thut, powerful yaksha, learned that his elder brother's life was ended. He was shaken and alarmed. Tears foamed and flooded his face. The yaksha king grew furious like blazing fire, stamped his feet, and cried out in a mighty voice: "Ha, arrogant human! I will fight and strike until his head is cut off and rolls in the middle of the forest. Hey, hey, ministers, hurry and arrange horses and troops. Let there be a full ten-samut force, with fierce power like lions. I myself will go fight and crush the enemy to pieces."

Then the chief minister, brave in heart, bowed his head to receive the demon king's command and ran out in haste at once.

He arranged fierce war-horses with yaksha riders assigned to mount them. One troop was all cotton-white, their riders holding guns and narrowing their eyes. One troop was all gray horses, their soldiers raising spears. One troop was black in every body, their warriors holding bows. One troop rode only red horses, holding lances and swinging them like turning wheels. Every division was bold, brave, and skilled, all of them capable riders. Then they saddled the royal mount, proud and swift like a lion, and prepared all the horse troops, waiting for the asura king to proceed.

Then Phraya Thut, powerful yaksha, went from the jeweled throne and entered the river-bathing place.

They opened the jeweled lotus-water pipes, sending flower-scented streams. He put on trousers with naga-figures and a black-ground cloth with crossing pattern. Fluttering side-cloths and swan-vine borders moved about him. A jeweled coat mixed with topaz covered him, and a ruby breast-band with curling pattern bound his chest. Directional chest ornaments, a jeweled breastplate, three diamond chains, bracelets, armlets with shining design, and a glittering jeweled crown adorned him in splendor. His right hand seized a Surakan spear, and the demon lord swung it, raised high. He leapt down from the bright jeweled seat and mounted the royal horse.

O horse, royal horse: the black lord of battle, fierce as a lion. Its heart was crow-dark, brave in combat; its mane was soft, its tail white, its spirit bold and swelling. It was of Sindhava horse-breed, proud in bearing and restless with force. Its two eyes were like the morning star, and it leapt as if it were the horse of the sun. As for the horses of the great army, they galloped and raced in tangled ranks, leaping, charging, and crying in confusion as if they would spring into the sky. The sound of foot-soldiers and horse-hooves thundered like unceasing waves in the ocean. The army and warriors hurried quickly, proceeding through the forest.

They crossed streams, fields, and forest openings, and came to beautiful Godavari. Seeing yakshas dead in heaps across the earth, Thut's anger pressed on his heart like fire. He roared a lion-roar to the commanders, lesser and greater: "Hurry, drive quickly in, and seize that vile forest ascetic."

Then the great brave troops heard the demon king's command and made grim signs, gnashing their teeth. Each displayed fierce power, swinging weapons like turning wheels. They spurred their horses and raced thickly together, yakshas shouting as they rushed in.

Then the protecting lord Vishnu heard the tumult and looked out to see the asura army. He took up his royal bow, proud as a lion-king going out to destroy a herd of deer, and the lord of the earth went forth.

Then the demon soldiers, lesser and greater, saw the lord holding the victorious bow and grew angry like fire burning the sky. They threw weapons in thick showers, shouting and roaring in clamor. Shooting and thrusting, racing their horses, they surrounded, attacked, and fought him.

Then the serpent-line lord, radiant Narai, drew his powerful arrow, and the king shot.

Mount Isinthon and Mount Yukhonthon bent and shook in thunder. Horses and troops died throughout the victorious army, scattered across the forest.

Then Phraya Thut, powerful yaksha, saw his troops dying in heaps and gnashed his teeth in fury. "Ha, arrogant human! I will destroy your life." Thinking this, the yaksha raised his fingers in salutation and recited a spell to hide his body.

By the power of his strong magic, both he and his horse vanished. He raised and swung the spear, aiming while he drove his horse in for combat.

Then the radiant Avatara looked and did not see the asura in the battlefield. He heard the clatter of horse-hooves driving close. Wonder and doubt rose in his heart. The king drew a mighty arrow, the one named Phlai Wat, and set it on the string. Aiming at the sound of the yaksha's horse-hooves, he pulled with bodily strength, and the sky-passing lord shot at once.

The victorious arrow struck the royal horse of Phraya Thut the yaksha. Its head was cut away from its body, and the steed's life ended in destruction.

Then Phraya Thut, brave and mighty in heart, fell down to the surface of the earth, and the demon lord was shaken with fear. He thought: "This human has power. I cannot fight him at close range against his arrows. Better to fly up and hide in the folds of cloud. I will recite spells over the divine spear and make it a bright age-ending fire; then I will secretly end his life, and he should die." Having thought this, he displayed his power. Darkness covered the sun's bright disk. He flew up into the sky and surged onward by the asura's strength.

He hid in the folds of cloud and thought on radiant Brahma's virtue. Raising the spear, he joined his hands and recited a spell to bind his mind.

When the words had been completed three times, the earth thundered and shook. Clouds and mist covered the forest floor. The victorious spear blazed like the fire at the age's end. He was filled with delight as if he had gained the wealth of heaven. He shifted the spear, turned it back and forth, and looked down. He saw the great human, holding the victorious spear raised high, and hurled it straight down with power, intending to destroy his life.

Then radiant Phra Kritsanurak saw the asura's jeweled spear showing its power like black fire, blazing in the middle of the sky, hotter than the sun's bright light, but did not see the demon lord's body. The sky-passing lord shot the Brahmastra.

The sound was like a cutting wind. The encircling mountains shook. The jeweled spear was shattered by mighty power, and then the victorious arrow went on to destroy the asura. It cut off his head, cut off his hands, cut off his feet, and they fell down from the sky, scattering across the earth. The yaksha's life ended.

Now I will tell of the gods and heavenly women in heaven. They saw the lord who bears Garuda kill the yaksha and end his life. They rejoiced, clapped their hands, and laughed aloud. Opening the jeweled palace windows, they leaned out from every celestial chamber. Some plucked strings, bowed strings, beat drums, and blew pipes in sweet lamenting melody. They shouted "Sadhu" in praise, and the whole universe rejoiced. Some scattered flower garlands with good fragrance down before the lord of the discus, and their scent spread everywhere.

Then the three-world lord, destroyer of worlds, when he had finished killing the asura, returned to the forest hut.

Tri Sian Attacks Rama

Then the troops of Phraya Thut who survived in the forest saw their asura king destroyed. Fear made their bodies tremble and their spirits fly, as if they could sink into the earth. Together they ran through cut paths and forest ways, straight to Matchawari city.

When they arrived, they bowed at the feet of Tri Sian the yaksha and reported: "A bold and arrogant forest ascetic has caused battle. He punished and destroyed the hands and feet of Lady Sammanakkha. The lord who rules Romkhan grew angry and led his army out. He fought and attacked with full force, but could not withstand that ascetic. Your lordship died, and the news reached the provincial city. Your elder brother raised his army to fight the human who is an ascetic, but he too reached the end of life. I escaped, and so survived to come here."

Then Tri Sian, yaksha of the solar line, heard the news and burned in his heart. Tears gathered and flooded his face. It was as if brutal Time had come to cut off his heads with a discus blade. Grief and anger both overflowed. The yaksha king was furious like age-ending fire. One mouth cried out in a mighty voice until the sound reached the worlds and heavens. The second mouth said, "I will kill and slash him so no shame remains." The third mouth said, "Hey, demon ministers, hurry and arrange brave warriors, and Phlai Phatkan, streaming with rut. I will go kill the enemy."

Then the demon ministers raised joined hands, bowed their heads, and came out from the Romkhan audience hall.

They arranged the warrior hosts, bold and fierce demon troops. One troop had tiger faces gnashing their teeth, while their bodies were asuras. One troop had bodies like gandharvas, but their faces were buffalo faces. One troop had donkey faces and monkey bodies. One troop had bodies like forest spirits, but their faces were lions. One troop had horse faces and dragon bodies. Each displayed fierce power, swinging weapons like turning wheels. Elephant lords mounted rut-streaming elephants, all prepared and waiting for the asura king.

Then Tri Sian, powerful yaksha, when the arranging of the army was finished, went to bathe in the river.

He washed and bathed his body in delight, wearing the scent of divine flowers. He put on swan-vine trousers in splendid style and a waistcloth with shining gold-on-green ground. Fluttering side-cloths moved as he went. A nine-gold padded coat shone bright. Directional chest ornaments and an engraved breastplate covered him, and three jeweled chains competed in brilliance. Bracelets shaped like coiled dragons, emerald armlets with rainbow glow, and diamond rings set in jeweled frames made all ten fingers shine like fire. His three heads wore jeweled crowns, and his ear-ornaments flashed in alternating colors. One hand held a powerful bow; the second held a mighty trident; the third seized a discus raised high; the fourth took up a great spear; the fifth held a bright goad; the sixth seized a mace. He swung them and displayed his power, proud as a lion-king. He leapt down from the splendid jeweled seat and came to mount the war elephant.

O elephant, war elephant: fierce, bold, restless, and brave. It conquered with tusks, washed with trunk and feet, and charged swiftly like wind. Grim in its purpose, thundering with rut, it shifted its stance as if ready to break through. It curved its tail, spread its ears, and at the mere movement of a shadow would rush down with its tusks. Its fittings were complete, worth a city in themselves, with bright colors shining against the sky. Rows of umbrellas and victory banners streamed into the heavens, and kettledrums sounded around it in clamor. The sound of its feet shook the earth. The brave troops shouted in tumult; dust blew up and covered the air as the army and soldiers hurried on their way.

They came to the Godavari, beside the mountain-slope. He halted the elephant in the middle of the forest and gave orders to the troops: "Seize that unrighteous forest ascetic. Bind him tightly and bring him here. Hurry, hurry, raise the army and go in. Do not let time delay."

Then the yaksha officers heard the royal command. The asuras gnashed their teeth. Each swung weapons in turmoil, shouting until the earth rang. They all rushed in together to surround the forest hut.

Then the serpent-line lord, radiant and blessed, saw the asura bands coming to fight and gave royal command: "Look, Phra Lak of the solar line. These are the kin of that Sammanakkha. Then the demon soldiers saw the human bearing the bow coming to fight. Anger burned like fire in the sky. Each swung weapons and displayed fierce, brave power, leaping, plunging, and thrusting forward with the strength of yakshas.

Then the jeweled discus-lord alone parried and guarded, driving in to fight and kill them.

He was like mighty Time come to take the lives of yakshas. He struck left and swept right in confusion in the middle of the army.

Then the demon soldiers fixed their minds on ending his life. The asuras crowded around him together, shooting, thrusting, stabbing, and cutting in chaos. Their shouts rang loudly as they pressed and struck without caring for life.

Then radiant Narai of the solar line turned, parried, and fought. Asuras died in heaps across the forest. Seeing that the demon troops still did not become few to the eye, the sky-passing lord drew the royal arrow, set it to the string, aimed to destroy them, and the royal lord shot.

It struck the horses, chariots, elephants, and demon troops, lesser and greater. They died shattered across the whole victorious army, leaving no ordered field at all.

Then Tri Sian, powerful yaksha, saw that the human had force and had killed his warriors. All the asura troops, men and officers alike, had died by the arrow's light. Angry as a coal-fire, he drove the royal elephant in to charge and stab.

Then Phra Chakri, before whom the three worlds bow in fear, parried, guarded, and fought fiercely in the open field. He struck with the powerful bow, and the elephant's tusks broke as if cut on purpose. The rutting royal elephant shook its body and cried aloud through the forest.

Then Tri Sian, yaksha of the solar line, furious like fire, hurled the discus.

It blazed like the sun's disk. Its sound rang and shook every direction. It circled around the lord of the discus, hot and bright as the fire of the age's end.

Then Phra Kritsanurak, the created lord, saw the yaksha's asura discus sounding through the world. He drew the Agniwat arrow and set it on the string. His eyes aimed as he pulled it high; then he shot with power, and its sound thundered through sky and earth.

The arrow went and shattered the discus, then struck the yaksha's royal elephant. It fell flat upon the surface of the earth, and lord and mahout alike reached the end of life.

Then Tri Sian, brave and powerful in heart, stood on the surface of the earth, and the demon lord grew even more furious. His three mouths cried out until all thundered. Gnashing his teeth, fixed on killing, with six eyes like suns, he rushed in to fight.

Then the radiant Avatara parried, guarded, and fought him hand to hand. Each fled and chased in turn through combat. Rama leapt up, set his foot on the yaksha's knee, and pulled at his heads, turning swiftly like a wheel. The asura seized him by the waist and stood firm; they turned and grappled back and forth.

Then Tri Sian, powerful yaksha, raised his hands to ward off weapons and did not think of life. Aiming firmly, he leapt in to seize and strike, his hand shifting the bright jeweled spear. Both were bold, both were brave in combat, each receiving and each striking without giving way.

Then Phra Hariwong, created Narai, leapt up and set his foot firm on the demon lord's shoulder. One hand pulled the yaksha's heads. His right hand swung the royal bow, splendid like the shining sun, and struck the vile asura. Tri Sian fell sprawling and reeled back and forth.

Then Tri Sian, fierce and brave in heart, with his army ended and his whole body bruised, cared nothing for life. The yaksha drew the shining arrow, set it on the string, aimed to fight, and shot.

The sound thundered through the sky. The earth rang and shook in fear. The arrows filled the heavens and circled swiftly around the Avatara.

Then the wise and brave Phra Chakri saw Tri Sian the demon lord shooting his victorious arrows to attack. He seized the Brahmastra and set it on the string, intending to end his life. He drew it high and firm, and the righteous lord shot with power.

Mount Meru leaned aside. The sound rolled up to Dusita. It struck Tri Sian the enemy in the chest, and his life ended at once.

Then all the gods and heavenly women saw that Phra Harirak, lord of the discus, had power surpassing the world. He had killed Tri Sian, Thut, and Khon, together with their yaksha hosts, whose bodies lay dead across the earth. Together they gave loud praise and victory to him: "May he bear excellent power and might; may no enemy withstand him." The celestial nymphs were glad and leaned out from every palace. Some scattered divine golden flowers, all sweet with fragrant scent. Some played strings, drums, and pipes in rolling music, clapping their hands through the whole city of heaven.

Then the three-world lord, destroyer of worlds, when he had finished killing the asuras and the gods had scattered divine flowers, with fragrance spreading everywhere and delighting the heart, walked gracefully and happily back to the forest hut.
