This is the twenty-seventh สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Sammanakkha's return to Lanka, Thotsakan's desire for Sida, Montho's warning, Maricha's forced service as the golden deer, Rama's pursuit and killing of Maricha, Maricha's deceptive cry in Rama's voice, Sida's accusations against Phra Lak, and Phra Lak's reluctant departure from the hut.

Sammanakkha Returns to Lanka

Then Sammanakkha the yaksha woman, when Thut, Khon, and Tri Sian the asuras had lost their lives, was struck with fear. Her terror of Phra Lak and the bow-bearing lord was as if she could sink into the earth. She left mighty Romkhan city, waded through the ocean, crossed over, and came to Lanka.

When she arrived, she came up from the shore and hurried on with yaksha strength. Reeling and stumbling, she entered the gate of the victorious city.

Then the bands of asuras, lesser and greater, women and men dwelling in the mighty city, looked out and saw the lady. Her hands were cut short, her feet were stumps, her mouth was gashed, and her body was torn into ugly, shameful strips. Her ears were cut off, her nose cut away, and the asura woman looked unlike any lady. Her hair hung loose; her breasts sagged down to the fold of her cloth. Everyone was startled. Some said a ghost had entered. Some said it was a plague-mother, a forest spirit. Little children, boys and girls, fell or ran without looking. They shrieked and screamed in fear, not knowing the lady.

Then Sammanakkha the yaksha woman struggled to hold her body upright and went straight to the audience place of the lord of Lanka.

When she arrived, she embraced the lotus feet of her great elder brother. Tears drenched the lady's face. She grieved as if her life would end.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line saw his sister in deep grief and misery, and the demon lord was startled. Seeing mouth, ears, and nose cut away, hands and feet severed and flowing with pus, the yaksha king grew angry like fire burning through the whole universe. He leapt down from the jeweled throne, called the fourfold warrior hosts, and displayed mighty victorious power with the strength and force of the demon lord.

He became ten-faced and twenty-armed, towering over the sky. His body was enormous and majestic, like Asakan mountain. The ten faces opened twenty eyes, blazing like the shining sun. Ten mouths clicked tongues and gnashed teeth, with a sound like Mount Meru collapsing. He stamped his feet, leapt, and cried out, roaring across the sky. One hand held a fierce and powerful bow; the second seized the victorious sword. The third held a discus and swung it; the fourth held a great spear. The fifth held a trident and waved it; the sixth seized a mace. The seventh held a raised halberd; the eighth took up a heavy club. The ninth grasped a javelin; the tenth took up a bow. Weapons filled all twenty hands, swinging swift as turning wheels. "Whoever did this to my sister, come fight me. I will cut them down until no shame remains in the throat."

Still angry, he spoke and questioned Sammanakkha: "What cause, what reason, beautiful one, has brought you to this state? The one who did this to my beloved sister: is it a yaksha, a human, a rishi, a god, a garuda, or Vasuki? Lead your elder brother there to destroy and attack."

Then Sammanakkha, lovely lady, heard the royal command. She joined her hands and reported with deceit: "At first this younger sister was ill at ease, so I took leave of Your Majesty and went to play in the forest. I met Phra Ram, Phra Lak, and Nang Sida living as ascetics by the Godavari. That woman has a slender beauty surpassing heavenly nymphs in every class. I lifted Lady Sida in my arms, intending to carry her away and offer her to the lord of the earth. Phra Lak caught up with me midway and was able to seize Sida back. He punished me until I nearly died, as if I had no solar-line family or kin.

"Then your younger sister went to report the matter to our three radiant elder brothers. In anger they raised their armies and went to fight, but the human destroyed them and they died. I invite Your Majesty to go win victory, kill him until his life and body are ended, and then bring Lady Sida to be the glory of the demon city."

Then the ten-headed lord of the solar line, brave in heart, listened to his sister's account. The fire of desire burned and grew a hundredfold, seeping through every hair of his body. Passion clung to him like scorching flame. The anger that had meant to kill and strike melted away and vanished into delight. The weapons he held dropped down before he was aware. He thought only of the heart-delighting form, and his mind writhed and boiled. He asked: "This form of Sida, whose beauty surpasses the heavenly women, compared with lovely Montho, in what way are they alike?"

Then his younger sister, skilled in manner, reported: "Women in all three worlds, though they may be beautiful, are not complete. To compare elder sister Montho with her is to put them a thousand times apart. If brows are compared, Montho's brows lose to the young lady's brows. If the shape of the neck is compared, it too is far apart. Sida's cheeks are worthy of wonder; her sharp eyes are clear and keen. Her bright face is like the moon. Her breasts are like soft-pollen lotuses. Her nose is beautiful and graceful. Her smiling mouth is fit for laughter. In bodily form and every proportion, Montho is defeated; in fair complexion, she is defeated by Lady Sida. In manners, too, she loses. Sida's lovely body is a thing of desire. She is perfect in the five kinds of beauty; in all the world no comparison exists."

Then Thotsakan the yaksha heard his sister's words as if divine water were poured over him. Desire grew until his heart nearly broke; heated passion filled and deluded him. He said: "You praise the young lady's beauty and say she is far beyond Montho. If she is compared with Phra Uma, with beautiful heavenly Phra Lakshmi, and with lovely Phra Saraswati, which of the three is better?"

Then Sammanakkha the yaksha woman reported: "This Lady Sida has a blessed beauty pleasing to the eye. If she is compared with auspicious Phra Lakshmi, beloved Phra Saraswati, and the form of holy Phra Uma, I see her as better than all three. Gather the beauty of those three ladies together, and it will still not equal soft Lady Sida. Whoever sees that lovely woman will be dazed, deluded, and lose sense. With only two eyes, one cannot finish seeing her beauty. She is fit to be crown of royal women. My elder brother, think quickly, do not delay."

As she reported, the woman drifted into speaking of Phra Lak and radiant Phra Ram. Both royal lords were so beautiful that they surpassed the gods of every heaven. "If I had those two lords sharing my room, I would cherish and delight in them on left and right." When she recovered her senses, the lady grew ashamed and said no more.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line, the more he listened, the more he lost clear sense over the form of Lady Sida. Since his sister had come and spoken of her, he had thought only of desire. His love for the lady became love beyond love, and the asura was mad and troubled in heart. He said: "This Phra Ram who is her husband: how does his beauty compare with mine? If she came to share delight with me, do you think she would love me, dear lady?"

Then Sammanakkha, lovely lady, heard her powerful elder brother name the royal lord and was glad. Her heart drifted and spoke in delusion: "Have mercy on me, beautiful lord. Though my hands and feet are cut short like this, do not be troubled in heart. If you will delight in love with me, I will conjure a new body, more beautiful than young Sida, so that both royal lords will desire me."

Then Thotsakan, descendant of the lord who rides the swan, heard the name of the beautiful lady and lost all sense. He slipped his arms around his younger sister, lifted her onto the yaksha's lap, and said: "Why be shy or ashamed, lady? Your merit and mine were made together." He caressed her, stroked her, and kissed her face. "Why push your elder brother away, little sister?" When he looked closely, he saw she was not Sida. "Ah, elder brother has been deluded." He felt ashamed and shaken in spirit, unable even to look at his sister's face. The demon king burned and longed in his heart, dreaming only of the lady. He sprang up, sat down, and raved, the fire of desire crowding him like hot flame. Sighing, without sense, he went into the splendid inner chamber.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne and spoke to Montho, beloved lady, telling her everything Sammanakkha had reported from the beginning: "Lak and Ram have treated us with coarse contempt. My anger is heavy, as if our sister were a vile lowborn woman without solar-line kin. They cut off nose and mouth, punished her hands, cut away the feet and severed the beautiful one's hands. Not only that: they destroyed the lives of Thut, Khon, and Tri Sian. If I go and strike them down, it will shame my heart because they are forest ascetics. The three worlds will criticize me, saying I killed humans no greater than flies. But to stay silent would be deep disgrace before the gods and guardians in heaven, and all the siddhas and gandharvas would join in mocking me. I think to steal his wife and make him suffer such grief that blood flows from his eyes. I will repay the wrong and make my vengeance reach my heart. What do you think, lady?"

Then lovely Montho, crown of demon women, heard the royal words. She raised joined hands and answered the command: "This matter is very strange. For it to have driven them to fight and kill until three of Your Majesty's younger brothers died is beyond thought. Perhaps your sister went and began the trouble, and from that a continuous war arose. If you are hurt and angry and mean to repay the enemy, it is proper to think of battle. But to go steal another man's wife will make the world laugh and mock. Even if it seems fitting, it is a loss of dharma. Do not rush into a breach of proper custom."

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line heard and answered: "What you say is clear to my heart. But stratagem and war-craft are deep and hidden; one wins by them. Why rush into open battle? If his wife is stolen and kept, he will die. Will the three worlds criticize me? I do not do this from delight in desire. I am cutting off the root of the enemy's stratagem with wisdom. Fear of gossip is no true matter."

Then young Montho, dear and pitiful one, raised her hands and answered: "Sky-passing lord, consider carefully. Phra Lak and Phra Ram of the solar line are grandsons of radiant Atchaban, descendants of Phra Harirak, lord of the discus, with power surpassing the world. Have you forgotten the earlier time when Your Majesty came to the window with me? A pair of sparrows, male and female, flew to praise one another before the victorious window. Your ten mouths told them to fly away, but the birds had no fear. I raised joined hands and spoke the name of Lord Atchaban. A sword floated from the air and cut off the bird's head before the terrace. Since even his name has such force, it is wrong to look lightly on his grandsons."

Then Thotsakan the yaksha heard her and his anger increased, but the asura said nothing. He turned his face away, thinking silently, stunned by the beloved form of Lady Sida. When evening darkened into twilight, the asura entered the sleeping chamber.

He reclined upon the bed, lifted his hand across his face, and wept. Desire burned like lying in fire, and he longed for the form of the lady. When he closed his eyes, he saw Sida, as if she had come to lean against the yaksha's body. Glad at heart, he reached and groped, but found the splendid pillow beside him. He wrapped himself around it and held it close, thinking it was beloved Sida. Opening his eyes, he did not see the lady; his arms were only around the pillow as he lay there. He pushed it from his body. The asura lamented and wondered: "How can I gain the beautiful lady as crown among women?" He kept springing up and sitting down, unable to sleep, until the sun grew bright and the jewel-fowl and birds cried out, urging dawn.

Then he thought of the son of Kakana, Maricha, skilled in mind. "I will send him to deceive the young lady; surely I will get what I desire." Having thought this, he bathed, dressed, and took up the powerful bow in his hand. He left the bright jeweled palace and went with power to the royal audience hall.

He lowered himself onto the nine-gem throne beneath the shining white umbrella. The yaksha lords and asuras bowed their heads in homage. Then he gave royal command to Maricha the demon yaksha: "Now two ascetic brothers, and one woman named Sida, have come to dwell by the Goda River. They cut off Sammanakkha's hands. They ended the lives of Thut, Khon, and Tri Sian the asuras. If I go kill them by striking and cutting, there will be no honor in it. I must destroy them by inner stratagem, making them suffer pain a hundredfold.

"You must transform yourself into a golden deer, with shining, radiant body, and go to the forest hut. Deceive the lady by magic so that wonder enters her heart and she is caught in the yaksha's trick. Then walk with swaying steps near the lady's hall. If Lak and Ram follow the deer, I will be able to steal the lady. You must hurry there now; do not delay."

Then Phraya Maricha the yaksha heard the lord of the discus named aloud, and the asura was terrified beyond measure. It was as if the king of death had come to cut off his head with a discus blade. He answered the yaksha king's command: "Crown of the city, please show mercy. This Phra Ram is the four-armed lord himself, incarnate to sustain the world. His fame has appeared in mighty glory. Your three younger brothers went to battle; forty-samut troops had no remnant left. My mother and my elder brother too were destroyed, and the line of Kakana was exhausted by his power. I myself nearly died by the arrow of radiant Phra Narai. I escaped and so survived; the lord of the earth knows me at his feet. To send me back this time is better called killing my life. If Your Majesty does not show mercy, I will surely die."

Then the ten-headed lord of Brahma's line heard this like a trident piercing his ears. The yaksha grew furious. He sprang up from the throne, stamped his feet, and shouted like thunder: "Hey, hey, Maricha the asura! You fear a wandering forest ascetic and so deliberately praise the human, calling him Narai, mighty bearer of the bow. Your kin are destroyed and you have no sorrow, but come to frighten and deceive me. It is wasted effort that I counted you as my uncle. You speak no true words. Even if he has mighty power, when has he ever crossed the ocean?"

Then powerful Maricha the yaksha heard the asura king. He raised joined hands and reported: "It is not that I am without anger over the death of my family and kin. But I foresee danger, and so I have opposed Your Majesty's command. You are of Brahma's line, crown of great kings, surrounded by royal women and attendants. What need do you have of Sida? To bring suffering because of one woman will create a driving war in days ahead. Your Majesty has wisdom. Please consider according to dharma and custom."

Then the twenty-armed yaksha heard and grew angry like fire. He roared a lion-roar so loud that even the royal palace seemed unable to endure it. "Hey, hey, wretched Maricha! Even if great war arises, I do not fear it. If you do not go according to my command, I will end your life, and do not doubt that your children, wives, clan, and kin who remain will also perish."

Then Phraya Maricha the yaksha saw Thotsakan's anger and feared royal punishment beyond thought. His body trembled, his face turned pale, and his mind was choked and sealed. If he went, he feared the powerful lord; if he stayed, he feared his life would end, and his kin and family with him. "I must sacrifice my own life and go according to the old karma that exists." Having thought this, he bowed at the lotus feet and reported to the yaksha king: "All this opposition I have offered was through loyalty to the lord of the earth. I saw it as a breach of the ten royal dharmas; I did not mean to twist or resist. Since Your Majesty will not listen, I am helpless and will act according to the command. But if I go out, my life will be ended. Please have mercy and care for my faithful wife and children."

Then King Thotsakan the yaksha heard this as if divine water were poured to bathe the demon lord's body. He spoke sweet and pleasant words: "Look, brave-hearted Maricha. You are skilled and wise. It is wrong to think your life will end. If the work succeeds, I will reward you with rank and honor. Do not grieve for children or wife; I will care for them in happiness and welfare."

Then powerful Maricha the yaksha received the command, raised joined hands in homage, and went to his asura dwelling.

When he reached the golden sleeping chamber, bright with patterned designs, he embraced his jeweled lady, his beloved chief wife, in immeasurable grief. Sobbing, he spoke gently: "Look, beloved crown of my life. From this day we will be parted; my old karma has overtaken me, lady. Because that Sammanakkha came to praise beautiful Sida, the asura king will now have me transform into a deer and go lure Phra Harirak, so that he may steal the lady for desire. When I opposed him, he was angered and would kill my whole family and lineage. I have no further thought, dear one; I will sacrifice my life. In the earlier time I almost died, and only because I escaped in time did I survive. This time I am likely to die by the arrow of Phra Narai the lord. Ah, apple of my eye, lady, remain well."

Then his jeweled wife, lovely and beautiful, heard the words of her royal husband. She struck her breast at once, as if brutal Time had come and cut off her head. She laid her face down and embraced his feet, lamenting: "Ah, crown above my head, by whose power I have lived in happiness and ease. Is it right that ruin should part us until life ends in death? It is wasted trust that you placed your body in the yaksha king, hoping to rely on him. Is it right that he has no mercy, but means to kill you and end your life? From this day I will endure sorrow, my happiness and splendor lost. I will drink tears every night and have only burning distress. My lord, kill and cut me down first, destroy your wife's life before you go, and only then will this longing and attachment end." The lady spoke while weeping.

Then Phraya Maricha the yaksha heard his chief queen lay her face down and plead, which deepened his love. Tears filled and flooded his eyes, and he sighed heavily. He embraced her and held her to his chest. "Dear heart, do not grieve. Those born in the world of samsara: who can escape Time? Even Mount Meru has its ending in the fire of the age. The destiny written by Brahma clings to the body; can one avoid death and destruction? Do not be overwhelmed with grief. City-spirit, remain steadfast. Guard yourself from fault; remember fear and caution. I entrust you, beloved lady, to the twenty-armed king." Having given this charge, he went out.

When he arrived, he raised joined hands and bowed to the yaksha lord of Brahma's line, in the middle of the asura ministers, waiting to hear the asura's command.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line saw Maricha and was glad, his face bright as the moon, as if he had already gained young Sida to share the taste of love. Smiling with delight, the asura spoke in pleasure. He gave royal command: "Hey, chief demon ministers. Arrange warriors of loyal heart, swift, wise, and mighty in power. Let there be about fifty, able to disguise themselves and plunder even Dusita. Prepare the bright jeweled chariot. I will go by the path of the sky."

Then Pao Wanasun, skilled in battle, received the command of the mighty lord, raised joined hands, and hurried out.

He arranged warriors skilled in battle, choosing only those of fierce, brave power. Each one had bodily strength able to fight enemies by the tens of thousands. They were huge, broad, and capable, proud and vigorous, gnashing their teeth as their hands swung weapons. Each one said: "With only this number of us, even if we met enemies as countless as the ocean, we would volunteer for Your Majesty, go out to battle, and kill them by our power."

Then Thotsakan the yaksha, when dawn brightened the time, came to the bathing place.

They opened the golden lotus jeweled pipes. Divine lotus-water fell as mist and rain, spreading sweet fragrance mixed with flowers. He put on golden-flower trousers and a decorated robe with vine-stems. The interlaced border and great fluttering side-cloth shone. Fringed panels, a jeweled coat, and curling breast-armor covered him. A raised jeweled breastplate and divine bright chains crossed him. Golden armlets and shining bracelets flashed, with rubies set among them. Ruby rings on garuda-shaped frames glittered in splendor. He wore a flowered crown with nine-gem flowers at the directions, radiant in gold, and fine ear ornaments. With victorious bow in hand, he walked out.

When he arrived, he mounted the victorious chariot, splendid and bright with radiance, and had Phraya Maricha the asura sit at the front of the royal chariot.

O chariot, jeweled royal chariot: its wheels were brilliant, its curved finials delicate. Its rear yoke curved softly, and its hubs shone, flashing together. Jeweled panels gleamed; the jeweled throne cast bright light. It was yoked with two thousand lion-drawn beasts, each strong and brave for battle. The chariot lord drove proudly and quickly, floating along the path of the sky. Clouds turned, mist covered the heavens, and high winds hid the sun. Mighty yakshas, hundreds of thousands in strength, stood bright beside the lord's seat. They drove the chariot quickly across the ocean, shining like the sun.

When they reached the farther shore of the ocean, the chariot floated down from the sky. They hid at the forest edge near the road to Godavari. He strongly ordered the great troops: "Do not cough, sneeze, speak, or make noise." Then he had Maricha the asura transform his body into a deer.

Then powerful Maricha the yaksha received the command, bowed farewell, and entered the forest.

He lifted joined hands above his head, thought on the virtue of radiant Brahma, and recited a spell to transform his yaksha body by mighty power.

In an instant he became a golden deer, with a shining body like a divine drawing. Its two horns were like pearl crystal; its two eyes were like dark blue jewels. Its two ears were like flower petals; its four feet stood firm and were fragrant. It moved gracefully, like a swan in flight, beautiful through every limb. When the transformation was complete, he pranced and tested his steps, playful and shining. He cried sharply like a wild deer, and came moving with graceful steps toward the asura.

Then Thotsakan the yaksha saw Maricha create his body as a lovely golden deer. It was pleasing to touch, pleasing to see, and pleasing to love. The yaksha king rejoiced. He descended from the bright jeweled chariot and stroked the deer over all its body. Then he gave royal command to Maricha the demon yaksha: "Hurry to the hut. Pretend to deceive Lady Sida. Once she is caught by the trick and stratagem, walk with swaying steps into the forest thicket. If her husband follows, cry out by asura magic so it is clearly Phra Ram's voice. Then his younger brother will go after him to help. I will steal the lady and flee to the city of Lanka."

Then Maricha, demon lord skilled in war, received the mighty lord's command and went straight toward the hall.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line saw the golden deer walk along the path, and the asura followed its track.

When they came near the hermitage, the clever demon lord hid at the forest edge, fixing his eyes and waiting for his chance.

The Golden Deer

Then Maricha, yaksha in golden-deer form, when he arrived before the hut, acted like a forest deer. He deliberately walked softly and close, then pretended alarm, leaping and bounding. Proudly he tested his steps and kept glancing toward the lady. When he saw her looking, he cried out and moved as if he would come near, then leapt here and there, lowering and raising his head as if eating grass.

Then lovely Lady Sida was sitting with Phra Lak and Phra Chakri before the leaf-hut. She glanced and saw the great deer walking along the forest edge, yellow and shining as if painted with gold, beautifully made over its whole body. Mouth and feet were red like rubies, strange and finer than all other deer. Desire for it seized her as if her heart would break. She reported to Phra Narai, her husband: "Mighty lord, please favor me, your servant at your lotus feet. Help catch this golden deer and keep it here at the hall, so your beloved younger one may enjoy it and have great happiness. If it dies, bring me its skin, and I will spread it as a sleeping seat."

Then Phra Chakrakrit, mighty bearer of the bow, heard his chief queen and looked at the deer. It moved as if by a device: beautiful in hair, beautiful in horns, beautiful in color, beautiful in form, beautiful in every slender limb. Doubt rose in his spirit. He spoke gently: "Look, beloved young lady. This deer is not a forest deer. I think it is a yaksha's trick. If it came face to face to fight by power, it would fear its life would end. It cannot fight by force, so it has deliberately changed into a deer, hoping to lure me after it by the demon's war-stratagem. If I leave the hall, I think some dangerous event may arise."

Then young Lady Sida, dear and pitiful, heard the Avatara's command. She bowed at his lotus feet and reported: "Mighty lord, you can subdue every one of the ten directions. Golden deer do exist in the Himavanta. Only because Your Majesty has no mercy do you deliberately call it a yaksha's trick. If I do not get this great deer, my life will end." As she spoke, she sobbed and laid her face on the lap of radiant Phra Narai, grieving and pleading. The lady rolled and struggled in sorrow.

Then Phra Hariwong, mighty enough to shake the earth, saw the lady weeping in deep grief as if her life would die. He lifted the chief queen with both hands, dried the tears from left and right, called her spirit back, and gave command: "Apple of my eye, do not grieve. You have been my companion in hardship, enduring immense difficulty with me. How could I not love you, lady? Do not burn your heart. Since you desire the golden deer, I will catch it for you. Do not cry." Comforting her and stroking her back, he spoke to his younger brother: "You who share suffering, hardship, and life with me, I will go catch the deer. Stay here and guard the lady."

Then radiant Phra Lak answered: "Lord of earth, pause and think. The golden deer, its manner and movements, look wrong. It must be an asura deliberately creating an illusion, just as Your Mighty Majesty has said."

Then young Lady Sida heard the younger prince oppose it, and anger and hurt tightened in her breast. She said: "Thank you, Lak. You are loyal to your elder brother. I am only his servant-wife, who has suffered hardship with him. Since the day we left the royal city, there has been no comfort or happiness. Today I have found a golden deer, whose bright body delights the eye. I want to keep it and look at it in play, as one poor in the forest, to ease the pain and sorrow. Then radiant Narai of the solar line saw the lady weep and lament as if her life would pass away. He embraced her and lifted her onto his lap, looked at her face, and felt pity. He caressed and comforted the lady: "Life of your elder brother, do not grieve so deeply, with pain and sorrow. I will go catch the deer and bring it back for you, apple of my eye and heart." Having spoken, he ordered Phra Lak: "Beloved younger brother, wise one, stay here and guard the lady. Let no evil or danger arise." As he spoke, he took up the mighty arrow, splendid as the shining sun, and walked gracefully away from the beautiful seat, the sky-passing lord aiming for the deer.

Then Phraya Maricha the yaksha saw Phra Harirak, lord of the discus, leave the hall. He deliberately leapt, bounded, and cried out, proudly testing his steps and eating grass, luring the lord to follow by the yaksha's trick. When he saw the lord near, he slipped away, pretending to leap and bound, walking with swaying steps along the forest edge, hoping to draw him far from the leaf-hut.

Then the lord of the three worlds turned and pursued the golden deer along the line of the forest.

The lord hurried quickly after the deer until the rising sun's light grew hot. Angry like fire, the king set an arrow to destroy it.

Then brave-hearted Phraya Maricha leapt across a stream and passed up onto the slope of a mountain.

He ran while looking back without stopping until the yaksha's strength was exhausted. Forgetting himself from fear of Phra Chakri, his face changed back into the face of a yaksha.

Then radiant Phra Kritsanurak saw that the golden deer's face had become a yaksha's face. He knew the asura had changed form. Powerful and angry like blazing fire, he gave a mighty lion-roar: "Hey, Maricha the asura! When your mother, the crow-demoness, came swooping against the sages' hall, I destroyed her life; Sahu your elder brother also perished. I spared your life, yet you know no gratitude at all. Vile, ugly, wretched creature: this time I will not spare your life." Having spoken, he drew the arrow to the string. Glancing aside with graceful movement, he aimed at the deer's body, and the sky-passing lord shot with power.

Mount Meru and the seven ranges shook. The sound thundered up to Dusita. It struck the asura enemy's body, and blood flowed across the surface of the earth.

Then brave-hearted Phraya Maricha, struck by the arrow and hurt as if he would be destroyed, cried out by magic: "Ah, beloved Lak, companion of my life! This deer is not a forest deer. It has changed into an asura and is fighting me with power. Beloved younger brother, hurry and help. If you delay, your elder brother will die by the yaksha." Crying this, the asura fell down upon the earth, and his life ended.

Lakshmana Leaves the Hut

Then young Lady Sida, heavenly beauty, heard the demon lord's voice, and that cry was like the voice of the four-armed lord. She was shocked as if a thunderbolt had struck her body. In deep suffering, grief, and worry, the lady spoke to the younger brother: "Did you hear, beloved younger one? The lord of the discus calls for you, who share his life. Go help him kill the asura. Hurry there in time so you may fight the yaksha. If you delay, he will lose the advantage. Dear brother, do not sit still in indifference."

Then Phra Lak, wise in mind, heard the lady's command. He raised joined hands, bowed, and reported with wisdom: "Can Phra Narai the Avatara be defeated by wicked yakshas? Even Thut, Khon, and powerful Tri Sian, with armies countless as the ocean, could not withstand his power. Even if enemies covered the whole earth, they would all perish by his mighty arrows. This is the voice of an enemy, not the voice of blessed Phra Chakri. If I go after the serpent-line lord, I will fall into the yaksha's trick; and if elder sister stays here alone, later danger and harm will arise."

Then young Lady Sida heard this as if black fire-poison had burned through all her body. She said: "Ah, Lak, is this what it means to love your elder brother? I tell you to go help Phra Chakri, but you return with wicked thought and no shame. You pretend the asura is crying by stratagem; are you testing my heart? Do you mean to leave him to die? Why think like this, younger brother? If you do not go out after your elder brother, today my life will end." Saying this, she laid down her face in grief, and the lady wept and lamented.

"Ah, alas, I am like a wicked person, one who sent her husband out to die. I am like an unrighteous wanton woman, one whom no age would call good. Ah, blessed Phra Hariwong, whose virtue exceeds the splendor of heaven: because he loved his wife and did not grudge his life, he has been trapped by the asura's trick. What use is it that he came as Avatara, if he loses to a demon yaksha?" Speaking and weeping, she struck her breast in grief as if her life would end.

Then Phra Lak of the solar line heard the lady's reproach and lament, and it struck his body like a weapon. He lifted joined hands above his head and reported to the beloved chief queen: "The words Your Majesty has spoken are not fitting for me, your loyal servant. This younger brother loves my elder brother like the mother who gave birth to his head and hair. As for following Phra Chakri, I am helpless and constrained. When Your Majesty went after the deer, the sky-passing lord did not leave his mind at ease. He ordered me to guard my elder sister until the lord of the earth returned. If I go and afterward danger arises, the powerful lord will punish me for transgressing his royal command, and my life will end."

Then young Lady Sida, dear and pitiful, the more she listened, the more anger tightened her spirit. She spoke: "Even if he ordered you to guard me, when trouble comes, what will you do? What punishment would there be? You are deliberately slandering and arguing. All this is because your heart is crooked and treacherous toward your elder brother. Because we are here alone together in the hall, you twist and turn everything. Even if I become a widow, I would never think to rely on you. I will give up my life and die following the four-armed lord."

Then Phra Lak of the solar line, bearer of the bow, heard the lady's cutting words, and his heart burned like age-ending fire. If he went, he feared transgressing the command of the radiant Avatara; if he stayed according to the righteous lord's order, he feared the elder lady's anger. He sighed, thought again, and his spirit burned as if life would end. Tears filled his eyes. He bowed at the lady's feet: "This younger brother asks leave from your lotus feet to go after radiant Phra Narai. Elder lady, remain in welfare. Do not grieve or burn your heart."

Having reported this, he lifted his hands above his head and entrusted her to all the gods, lesser and greater: Indra, Brahma, Yama, and all three worlds; the forest lords and masters of the wild; all who dwell in divine palaces, in every stream, woodland, cave, and beautiful mountain; and Lady Earth herself. "I entrust this lovely lady, the chief queen of Phra Harirak the lord." Having entrusted her, he took up the powerful bow, turned his face away, and walked on.

As he walked, he stopped and looked back at his elder lady, grieving. His breast and heart were heavy with sorrow. He came back, bowed in homage again, and wept.
