Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the twenty-eighth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives the gods' recognition of Thotsakan's approaching doom, Thotsakan's disguise as the ascetic Sutham, Sida's abduction, Sadayu's aerial fight and death, Rama and Phra Lak's discovery of the empty hut, Sadayu's funeral, Kumphon's release from his curse, and Rama's grief on the road toward the monkey kingdoms.

Sida Is Abducted

Then the gods of power in every direction, the beings in all six heavenly realms, the forest lords, tree-spirits, and devas, heard Phra Lak of the solar line entrust heavenly Sida to their care. Their hearts burned as if with the fire at the end of an age. They looked with divine eyes and saw the yaksha lord of Lanka coming to steal the beloved queen. All the heavenly cities and realms fell into alarm and confusion. If they came to guard the lady, they feared the asura's power and could not come. Each one was troubled and distressed, and they thought back to the first cause of the Avatara.

They knew that the ten-faced yaksha would come to the end of his life because of young Sida. Through her, the killing of the asuras would be brought about. Even if he carried the lady away, what harm could come to Phra Lakshmi herself? Phra Narai would follow the lady, and he would meet the monkey armies. Together they would press, kill, and end the demon race by the light of his arrows. The world would be made firm because the four-armed lord had subdued the enemies. Thinking this, the gods grew glad. They praised aloud and clapped their hands, the sound spreading through the universe, and all the heavenly cities rejoiced.

Then Thotsakan the yaksha king saw Phra Lak, Rama's younger brother, leave the hall and was glad. It was as if immortal nectar had been rubbed across the demon's heart. Smiling with delight, the asura plucked leaves, raised his hands above his head, recited Vedic spells and charms, and by his demon power rubbed the enchanted leaves over his body.

At once he became an ascetic, practiced in vows and diligent in meditation. He wore a tiger-skin with bright patterned stripes, marked himself with sandal paste, and wrapped himself in bark cloth. A cord and rosary crossed him; his matted hair was bound up. In his right hand he held a palm-leaf fan as a screen. A golden-bright rosary hung upon him, and he crept along the edge of the forest.

When he arrived, he hid behind a bush and looked out. He saw the beautiful lady sitting before the hut, lovelier than the women in Indra's city.

He looked at her face, bright as the moon. He looked at her brows, curved like a bow. He looked at her eyes, like the eyes of a deer. He looked at her teeth, like smooth rows of dark jewels. He looked at her lips, as if they were about to smile. He looked at her glow, like radiant gems. He looked at her cheeks, bright as gold. He looked at her ears, like flower petals. He looked at her hairline, as if painted by art. He looked at her neck, graceful as a swan's. He looked at her arms, like the trunk of a noble elephant. He looked at her shape, like a kinnari from heaven. He looked at her breasts, like lotus pollen; at her waist, slender as a written line; at her skin, shining as if rubbed with gold. Her conduct and movement seized his heart. The more he looked, the more he was delighted and overcome with love. Smiling with pleasure, the yaksha king went straight to the hut.

When he reached the front of the hermitage, he appeared calm and self-restrained, like a yogi with a life of vows. He recited a charm of overwhelming enchantment and breathed it out on the wind toward her face. Then, glancing with his eyes, he muttered a blessing: "May victory and long endurance be yours."

Then soft Lady Sida, beloved of the heart, saw the ascetic come and give a blessing, beautiful in disciplined restraint. She had no suspicion. The lady bowed to his feet and spoke gentle words: "Holy sage, what is your name? Where is the forest hall in which you keep meditation and brahmacharya vows? You have taken pains to break through forest and wilderness. What business brings you here, teacher?"

Then the ten-headed one, skilled and brave, listened to the flavor of her speech, which was like heaven's nectar and medicine for the heart. Her manners and conduct increased his desire until he was lost in it. He answered sweetly: "This form is named Sutham. I live in the land of Lanka city. I have no greed or delusion. Since I took up the keeping of chastity, eight thousand years have passed. Being uneasy, I walked in meditation to bring myself great happiness. When I saw this leaf-hall, my eyes were greatly pleased, and so I took the trouble to come and look, hoping to know it. I have found you, young summit of beauty, your bright face bringing delight to the heart. You dwell alone here in the forest. What is your homeland? What is your name? Why have you come to live as a yogi?"

Then beautiful Lady Sida heard the sage's words and spoke gently: "I am the chief queen of Phra Ram, solar-line lord and bearer of the bow. My name is Sida, and I am from the city of Ayutthaya. My lord accepted his father's pledge and came to live under a forest vow. I, together with Phra Lak his younger brother, devoted in love at his lotus feet, came out to serve him here in the woodland. We have lived here a long time, and only today have I seen you, teacher."

Then Thotsakan the yaksha heard the lady's words and spoke sweetly: "Ah, lady of flourishing face, whose form surpasses the heavenly nymphs, graceful, delicate, and lovely beyond comparison. I say this from pity; do not take offense. You and Phra Ram your husband are as far apart as earth and sky. If you became queen to the ten-headed asura, it would be better. His possessions and splendor are vast; his power is known throughout the three realms. He is of Brahma's line, and all the gods bow to him. The king has no chief queen pleasing to his heart who could become crown of women. If you shared his white umbrella, you would shine like the nine jewels and divine gold, and the whole world would praise you."

Then young Lady Sida, beloved and beautiful, heard this and anger pressed tight in her chest. She answered: "That ten-headed yaksha lord is so wicked that no one can be compared with him. All the three worlds know it. Why do you praise him as good? As for Phra Ram of the solar line, he is radiant Phra Narai himself, incarnate to destroy the asuras. The lord stands in truth and dharma. Why do you turn to slander with crooked words? Are you a foolish ascetic, deluded and ignorant, that you come near the poison-fire of the age and speak with such arrogance?"

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line heard the lady's words, smiled, and answered: "Ah, I meant to help you, yet you are angry with a rishi. Where could Phra Ram, your husband, be equal to Thotsakan? In possessions, ornaments, retinue, kingdom, power, and wisdom, he is far below the yaksha king. Even if they fought by might, in the blink of an eye he would die. I speak according to dharma because I love you. Lady, think carefully."

Then beautiful Lady Sida heard the yogi's words like a sharp blade stabbing her ears. She said: "This rishi is corrupt. He does not live according to the work of a forest ascetic. You despise the lord who bears the discus. Does he have no power? Where now are Thut, Khon, and Tri Sian, the three younger brothers of Thotsakan, with forty-samut troops? Who killed their lives? Even the ten-faced lord with twenty arms will not withstand the arrow of Phra Narai. His whole clan and lineage will end. Do not think he will survive. I have no fellowship with the lying wind of a rishi. Hurry away from this hut. Do not trouble me with words."

Then the yaksha king Raphanasun heard and grew furious. He shouted: "Hey, hey, foolish young Sida. Your words are low and harsh. You raise up your husband's power. You will see today. I am no ascetic. I am Thotsakan the yaksha. If Phra Ram has power, let him come fight me." Having spoken, he changed back into demon form: ten faces, arms swinging royal swords, ten mouths gnashing teeth, and eyes like the blazing sun.

Then beautiful Lady Sida saw the asura form and was terrified. She called out to Phra Lak and Phra Chakri, but could not keep her senses. She cried and shrieked in fear, and the lovely lady ran from the demon.

Then the ten-headed lord of the solar line saw lovely Sida shaking, crying, and running without sense. The demon king smiled broadly, his eyes fixed on seizing the beautiful lady. He rushed after her, cut her off, and snatched this way and that.

When he caught up with the lovely woman, the yaksha king blocked her path and spoke sweet words: "Apple of my eye, do not be afraid. My love for you, young queen, is equal to my own eyes. Come, summit of women, and be the glory of the demon city. I will set you as chief queen beneath the splendid white umbrella, greater than all the women and attendants in the shining palace of the demons." As he spoke, he came in and supported her body. Gently he embraced and lifted his beloved, comforted her, and carried her on foot to the jeweled chariot.

When they reached it, he placed the lady at the rear of the shining royal chariot. By his power he drove it rushing through the sky, while the demon troops surrounded him.

Then young Lady Sida looked back at the leaf-hut and nearly died of heartbreak. She looked for Phra Lak and the jeweled discus-lord, but could not even glimpse them following. The more she was separated, the more she grieved and longed, and the lovely lady lamented for her husband: "Ah, lord crowned above my head, you knew this was a demon trick. I did not listen to your command, but sent you after the deer. Phra Lak resisted, but I was angry and forced him to help his elder brother. So the asura gained his chance and stole your wife from your lotus feet. When you return and see the empty hall, you will grieve and be full of pity. Ah, my heart, who will tell the four-armed Avatara and urge him to follow now, to kill this asura with the light of his arrow?" The lord's wife had no end of thought, and she wept as she spoke.

Now the story turns to Sadayu, the royal bird. He lived in a splendid palace. The bird thought of the discus-lord: "It has been long since I went to visit the lotus feet of radiant Phra Narai, king of kings. By now, are the three royal ones happy or distressed? No. Today I will go look and learn whether matters are good or bad." He left his bright palace and sprang up into the clouds.

The wind of his wings rang like a storm. Clouds thickened and mist filled the sky. Forests shook, earth trembled in confusion, and rain-darkness covered the heavens. Mountains and seas thundered; the world-elements roared everywhere. His wings covered the sun and hid its light; cloud-banks made the upper sky dark. He flew and drove faster than the wind, his wings beating and displaying courage. He crossed the ocean, Mount Meru, and the ring of the universe, leaping through the clouds by his power.

Then he glanced and saw Thotsakan stealing beautiful Sida, placing her in the rear of the jeweled chariot, with the asura surrounded by demons and flying through the air. Angry as the fire of the age, he swept in and blocked the way. He cried out and rebuked him: "Hey, demon lord! Why do you dare steal the chief queen, beloved of wise Phra Ram? Do you not fear death? He is the serpent-bedded lord himself, come from the great Milk Ocean. This lady is Phra Lakshmi, his beloved. Wretched one, return the queen to the mighty lord, and your demon life may be spared. If you do not listen to my words, I will destroy your asura life."

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line heard the royal bird and angrily shouted: "Hey, hey, animal-born thing. You speak proud and coarse words. Even if he is radiant Narai victorious, I do not fear his power. What business is this of yours, meddler? You would fight glorious Death himself. Your head will be cut from your body by my hand in an instant."

Then brave and mighty Sadayu heard the ten-headed asura and grew angry like the fire of dissolution. He cried out: "Hey, demon lord! You are ugly in nature and deluded. King Thotsarot, who stood in dharma, was my life-friend. Why do you say this is no business of mine? Young lovely Sida is my daughter-in-law, the jewel of my friend's house. Do you not know that? Even with ten faces and twenty arms, how will you fight against me? In a moment you will die. Do not dare to speak." Having spoken, he moved his wings and glided in, charging with bird-power, pursuing, pouncing, and striking the demon attendants.

Then fifty asura warriors saw the bird's bold pride. They rushed in to fight and destroy him. They hurled weapons in confusion; each one shot arrows. The sky thundered, and the sun was covered in heavy smoke.

Then powerful Sadayu rushed in and out in a whirl, facing the demon troops in the midst of the battle. The brave yakshas did not withdraw; the stubborn bird did not retreat. Claws pinched, beak tore, wings struck, and all fifty warriors died.

Then King Thotsakan saw all his soldiers' lives ended. He was furious, gnashing his teeth. His twenty arms swung weapons, showing terrible power like turning wheels. He stamped on the jeweled chariot and drove in, pressing after the bird.

Then Sadayu, royal bird, swooped and struck at the asura. With his beak he seized the charioteer driving the chariot; with his feet and hooked beak he tore until the neck broke and blood fell. He swooped against the turning royal lions, and all two thousand died. The demon king's chariot could not endure; its wheels and frame broke to pieces. Then the bird flew in, meaning to seize the young lady back.

Then the brave ten-headed lord, powerful in heart, flew through the sky holding the lady with one hand, while his nineteen remaining arms fought the bird. By the force of his terrible power, all the demon's weapons were spent. With only bare hands left, they kept striking and fighting one another.

The demon grew afraid in his heart. He feared losing victory to the bird. Carrying the lady while fighting Sadayu left him confused and distracted because of the beloved woman.

Then Sadayu, brave in war, flew before the twenty-armed king and showed his power like the wind of the age. He spread his wings and tail and mocked him: "Hey, deluded asura! Ten-headed, ten-faced demon, twenty-handed winner of battles. You hurl weapons like rain, yet they cannot touch even the tips of my feathers. Through all three worlds, to the edge of the three realms, do not think I fear anyone. I fear only the lord Swayambhu, Phra Narai king of kings and discus-lord, and the mighty ring of Phra Isuan worn on the lady's little finger."

Then King Thotsakan heard the royal bird and was glad. His power was spent, his wit was spent, and he had been afraid of death, with no hope of victory. He seized the hand of the queen and snatched off the ring from the little finger of soft Lady Sida. Intending to kill and end the bird, the asura hurled it straight with the strength of his body.

Its radiance blazed through the air and struck royal Sadayu as intended. Like a bright sharp discus, it destroyed the bird's life.

Then royal Sadayu, when struck by the jeweled ring of Phra Suli, felt pain through all his limbs and hairs. His two wings and tail broke, his chest was torn, and he fell from the sky. Holding the splendid ring in his beak, he kept his heart alive to wait for Phra Chakri.

Then soft beautiful Lady Sida saw the royal bird struck by the brilliant ring and fall to the earth. Pitying him as his life was nearly ended, and loving and grieving beyond measure, the lady lamented.

"Ah, Sadayu, it is not fitting that your life should end. Your power blazed like the fire of the age and was famed through all the heavens. You set your heart in loyalty to Phra Narai and did not think of your body against the yaksha. The asura would have been defeated by your power. Was it fitting that, while battle was still tangled, you spoke in delusion and lost your life, as if you were not born of a brave race? The strength is wasted: you were the beloved friend of the wise discus-lord, yet you have fallen to a common asura. My pity is beyond measure. Now who will help me in this pain and snatch me from the demon's arm?" Weeping as she spoke, she grieved as if her life would end.

Then the twenty-armed yaksha, victorious over the bird in battle, lifted Phra Lakshmi and flew on. But by the merit and power of the shining lady, the yaksha's body was made burning hot. His strength to travel through the clouds was spent, and he descended to the surface of the earth.

When he reached the ground, he set the lady down and led the dear beloved through the thick forest, across streams, ravines, and watercourses.

Then Lady Sida, beloved above all, walked while grieving, turning back to look for Phra Chakri. She saw a golden peacock moving on the crest of a bright mountain and spoke gently: "Bird, have mercy. Carry news to Phra Narai, my lord, that the yaksha has carried me away and that I am in pain and misery. My shame and anger are beyond thought; I do not think I can keep my life. Let him hurry after me and win me back." She gave this charge as she walked on with the demon.

They crossed streams, fields, mountain hollows, and forest paths until the sun declined in the afternoon. The lady saw a troop of monkeys, young clinging to front and back, crowded along the foot of a mountain. She spoke and pleaded: "Good ones, I entrust this cloth to be offered to radiant Phra Narai. In mercy, tell Phra Chakri that the asura has stolen his younger one." As she spoke, the lady took off her shoulder-cloth and sent it out to the forest monkeys. Weeping, she repeated her charge: "Do not forget my words, elder monkeys. Let the lord hurry after and fight him, destroying his life with the light of his arrow, ending the whole clan of that faithless enemy in the demon city of Lanka."

Then the ten-headed one, skilled and brave, led young Lady Sida across streams and forestlands without stopping to rest his body, until the afternoon sun leaned low. Fearing that Phra Ram would catch up, the demon reached the shore of the great ocean. He thought: "Sida's form cannot be found in all three worlds. If I bring her into Lanka city, it will anger the eyes and heart of Montho, my queen. No. I will take the queen and keep her in the garden." Having thought this, the yaksha lifted the beautiful lady and showed his bold strength, flying across the ocean toward the jeweled garden.

When he reached the palace of recreation in the royal demon garden, he placed Lady Sida on a splendid jeweled couch. By the power of the merit of the world's mother and beloved one, whenever the yaksha king came near the lady, his heart burned like the fire of the age. His ten heads nearly broke apart by the power of Phra Narai. So he moved, step by step, out of the golden pavilion.

He gave royal command to his son Sahat Kumar: "Be alert in guarding Lady Sida. Inspect carefully and command one another well. If any disaster or danger arises, I will not spare the life of a yaksha." Having ordered this, he displayed his power and flew into the city of the demon king.

Rama Finds the Empty Hut

Then wise Phra Chakri shot an arrow and struck the false deer, destroying its life completely. He took horn-vine cords and bound all four of its feet, slipped his bow through the deer's neck, and returned.

He crossed streams, fields, open hollows, mountain slopes, and forest paths. Glancing up, he saw his younger brother. The sky-passing lord was startled and asked: "Lak, beloved younger brother, my other self, what has happened? Why have you left Lady Sida alone? How has this come about?"

Then radiant Phra Lak bowed his head at Phra Chakri's feet, joined his hands, and answered the command: "Just now I heard the voice of Your Majesty my elder brother saying that the deer had become an asura and had come in force to fight and seize victory. It had such power that one alone could not resist it. It called me to hurry and help; if I delayed, life would end. Elder sister heard the voice and thought it was the voice of the four-armed lord. She drove your younger brother to follow your lotus feet. I told her it was not Your Majesty's voice, that the asura was deceiving us by magic. But elder sister did not listen. She wept as if her life would end, reproached me in anger and hurt, and said every kind of painful thing. I could not think how to resist her, so I was forced to follow your feet. Since I have transgressed the royal command, this fault is worth my life."

Then Phra Chakrarat, radiant and blessed, heard the news and burned like the fire of the age. The righteous lord threw the deer down. "Ah, this has gone wrong, Lak, beloved younger brother who shares my life. I think we will suffer grief beyond measure, and this time tears will flow." Having spoken, the king sighed deeply, heavy with sorrow, and invited his splendid younger brother to follow him back along the forest path.

They crossed streams, mountains, and open fields. The lord's heart shook in dread. The ten directions were dark and smoky; the sky thundered in confusion. The fruit trees along the path, mango, prang, and langsat, had put out strange fragrant blossoms, all unnatural and astonishing to the eye. The flocks of birds did not fly about; they sat dull and silent, with no cries or calls. Even the royal bow suddenly fell from his hand. Seeing every strange omen, he hurried to the forest hut.

When he reached the dwelling hall and did not see his chief queen, he was shocked as if life would end. The king searched everywhere for the lady.

They searched every thicket and bush around the dwelling, the water-landing, the pond, and the flower-garden. They went everywhere and did not find the lady. The two royal ones collapsed and sat down. Both were sad and miserable; tears filled their eyes, and both grieved and wept.

"Ah, Sida, my own beloved. You, dear companion in the hardship of walking the forest: I cherished your heart. I knew the asura's trick, yet I did not know how to resist you, beautiful one. Though I followed the deer, I did not leave you unguarded in spirit. I had Phra Lak stay with you, hoping he would help protect you. If you had not driven my younger brother away, how could you have vanished, apple of my eye? This time I am beyond thought. How will I know where to follow you? From now on I will grieve and die here in Himavanta. It is shameful that I was born as Avatara to subdue the wicked yakshas, yet the three worlds will spread blame, saying I did not understand the demon's trick. If I return to the city, I will be ashamed before all the gods." The lord wept as he grieved, as if his life would end.

Then Phra Lak, gracious in heart, thought that the mighty king had lost his life. He came and embraced the lotus feet of his elder brother of the solar line, laid down his face, grieved, and poured out tears: "Ah, Phra Hariwong, world-sustaining lord, famed through every direction. Should you not uphold the world? Have you come to die on the ground? You leave your younger brother with no care and return to sleep in the cosmic ocean. Who will avenge the enemy who despised us and stole the beautiful lady? Ah, beautiful Phra Lakshmi, what has become of you now? Ah, heart, one grief was not enough; now the lord has also lost his life. It has become two sorrows like this. Your younger brother can no longer keep his body." Weeping as he spoke, he laid down his face and fainted at the Avatara's feet.

Then the lord of Traitrungsa was seated on his splendid divine throne in the bright great palace, with heavenly women and nymphs offering joined hands, dance, strings, and song. Yet he had no happiness or ease; his body burned like the fire of the age. He looked with divine eyes and saw the royal lord and his beautiful younger brother lying unconscious before the leaf-hut. Alarmed, fearing that Phra Narai might lose his life and body, he brought the hosts of gods and flew down by the force of his power.

Hovering in the sky, he caused a fine mist of rain to appear. It touched Phra Lak and the strong-armed lord, cooling all their bodies and limbs. Then the king of the gods proclaimed: "Let radiant Phra Chakri follow the lady toward the southwest. Someone will give news of the young queen. Then he will go cleanse away the hosts of yakshas, and the three worlds will have happiness and peace." Having spoken, he took his attendants and returned to his heavenly palace.

Then the two royal lords of the solar line, touched by the fine divine water, slowly brightened in spirit and regained their senses. Each raised himself. Radiant Phra Narai spoke: "Younger brother who shares my life, whose voice just now proclaimed? Did you hear it, dear one? It told us to follow the beloved, and we will gain news of the lady." Having spoken, both took up their bows. Grieving and sorrowful, they left the hall grounds and turned their faces toward the southwest.

They went through the mountain forest and saw demon corpses scattered along the forest edge. Phra Chakri looked closely. Heads were cut off, feet were cut off, arms were torn away, yet they did not seem to be wounds from weapons. The more the lord thought, the more he wondered, and he hurried on.

Walking and looking at every step, they saw royal Sadayu the bird, with wings and tail broken, pitiful to behold. The sky-passing lord was startled. He drew near and spoke: "What has happened to you? With whom did you fight in battle, that all your body is bruised and hurt?"

Then royal Sadayu the bird saw Phra Lak and Phra Chakri and told what had happened: "I thought of the four-armed lord and traveled here through the sky. I found Thotsakan the asura stealing beautiful Lady Sida, carrying her in a chariot through the middle of the air. I came in and fought him fiercely, hoping to seize the beautiful lady from the arms of the brave demon lord. I broke the chariot and killed all the troops that had come with him. The demon's weapons were spent, but I mocked him carelessly, saying I feared only the jeweled ring the lady wore, given by Phra Isuan. The asura had no shame; he took it from the lady's little finger and threw it. It struck me, broke my wings and tail, and has nearly ended my life." As he spoke, he offered the ring to Phra Chakri, and the bird's life ended.

Then the two royal lords of the solar line heard Sadayu's lament, learned the news of the lovely lady, received the ring, and saw him die. Pity for the royal bird and grief and anger all grew a hundredfold. They mourned and loved the bird.

"Ah, mighty Sadayu. It is a waste of your bold and brave power. Was it battle that killed you, or careless speech, until you lost your life to the demon lord? The strength you had is wasted; your fame for courage throughout the ten directions is wasted. Your honor has become shame through all three realms." The sky-passing lord wept as he grieved.

When his anguish had eased a little, the radiant four-armed king took up the powerful Phlai Wat arrow and shot it with a thunderous cry.

There arose a great golden Meru, shining like a palace in Dusita, with five peaks and pavilions facing the four directions, a sight that delighted the eyes. It enclosed the body of the royal bird. When this was complete, Phra Chakri shot fire.

A blazing flame rose bright and strong, burning away the bird's body. Then a shower of rain appeared and quenched the fire by the power of Phra Chakri.

When the funeral of the bird was complete, Rama led his radiant younger brother onward, walking the forest path.

They looked out and saw a banyan tree, its circle high and great like a parasol spread above them. Its shade closed off the sun, and its fruits were thick and clean to the eye. The two royal lords hurried their steps. The sun was hot and strong, so they entered the shade, hoping to calm their bodies.

Now the story turns to the asura Kumphon. His body existed only from the navel upward, yet the demon had great power. He was huge and towering, his mouth open like a cave, his two eyes like the sun. The yaksha had been cursed by the knowing lord. For sixty thousand years he had endured suffering, with no happiness or ease. Only when creatures entered the circle of his hands could they become food to sustain his life.

Then the blessed radiant Avatara rested and cooled his body, and the king's spirit became calmer. A gentle wind blew softly, and the sun turned and sank behind the cliff. The two royal lords walked on together and entered the circle of the demon's hands.

Then powerful Kumphon saw the two beautiful humans come in together and rejoiced. He laughed aloud: "Today I have great fortune. I have starved stubbornly in the forest a long time without finding any taste. I will eat all their blood and flesh." He thought to seize the glorious lord and make his whole body shake with fear. Then he checked himself: "Ah, perhaps this is Narai incarnate, come down to subdue the enemies. Is that why I, though powerful, suddenly fear his might like this?" Having thought, he spoke gentle words: "Good humans, both of you beautiful in every limb, what are your names? What is your race and solar-line family? Where is your city? Why have you dressed as forest rishis? Why have you come into the hands of an asura?"

Then the three-world lord, destroyer of worlds, heard this and commanded: "Hey, demon king. I am named Phra Ram of the solar line. I am radiant Phra Narai. Rishis, masters of knowledge, and gods assembled and invited me to incarnate. I was born in the great royal line of Ayutthaya, hoping to subdue the base host of asuras who are thorns in the earth. I accepted my father's pledge and came to live in the form of a rishi with Phra Lak and Lady Sida, keeping vows in the forest. Thotsakan has stolen the lady. Did he pass this way? I am following my beloved, hoping to kill the asura. As for you, your body is only half a body. What is the cause, yaksha, that you must endure suffering here in this wild forest?"

Then brave-hearted Kumphon knew that this was Narai incarnate and bowed at the lotus feet with joy. He reported: "My name is Kumphon. I was a favored servant of radiant Phra Isuan. I secretly teased Lady Nila Mali, who served the lord of the three worlds. She cried out in anger and accused me. When the supreme lord heard, he was furious and seized his discus, throwing it to strike my body so that it was cut in half. Then he cursed me further to suffer in the forest. Only when I met Your Majesty, strong-armed lord, would I be freed from Phra Suli's curse. As for the ten-headed demon lord, he has stolen Lady Sida, your queen, and flown toward the southwest. The asura lives in Lanka."

Then Phra Narai, lord of the solar line, heard Kumphon the asura tell news of young Sida. His power and thought could not catch up to her. His heart trembled as if burned by fire. Longing for the lady and pitying her beyond measure, the lord's eyes filled with tears and he sighed. He asked the yaksha: "The road to Lanka city, demon, is it near or far?"

Then Kumphon the asura bowed his head at the royal feet, lifted his right hand, and pointed: "The road to the royal city of Lanka cannot be measured in little or much. It is difficult and painful, crossing mountains, ravines, streams, and peaks. When you reach a city named Khitkhin, ask Pali, the son of Indra, who rules there. Your Majesty will gain monkey armies from the two great cities, Khitkhin and victorious Chomphu. Only then will you be able to cross to Lanka. But I have endured great suffering. Discus-bearing lord, please show mercy. Send me out of pain and let me return to be a servant of Phra Suli."

Then Phra Hariwong, blessed and radiant, heard Kumphon the asura explain the forest road and felt great mercy. He drew the Brahmastra arrow to the bow and shot with mighty power. The sky grew dark and dim.

The victorious arrow struck Kumphon's body, and his life ended. He was born again in a divine palace on Mount Kailasa.

When Kumphon the yaksha had been sent on, the jeweled discus-lord, blessed and radiant, went onward with Phra Lak, his other life, following the road.

[Thon, forest-gazing]

They traveled between the mountains, winding along the foot of the great peaks. Seeing the flocks of birds there, the lord longed for the lady. Parrots perched on kaeo branches and called, like the voice of the young beloved. Mynas perched on kannika blossoms and spoke, like the lady's own speech. Khaektao birds perched on tao-rang and cried, like the elder brother separated from the chamber of the beautiful lady. Benjawans perched on flowering vines, like the day she begged him to follow the deer. Peacocks perched and cried out, like the elder brother longing for the soft one at his side. Wa birds perched on wa trees beside the road, as if to say that the lady had not believed his words. A pair of nang-nuan birds lay together, like the soft body of the beloved. Parting-birds perched on parting-palms and flew away, like the elder brother and the apple of his eye parted from one another. Nok-klang perched on lang-ling and cried, like the omen when he was separated from his younger beloved and grieved. Lamenting as he walked, the righteous lord went on, sobbing in sorrow.
