Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the twenty-ninth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Asamukhi's seizure of Phra Lak, Rama's grief and rest in the Kattali forest, Hanuman's recognition of Rama, Hanuman's summons of Sukhrip, Sukhrip's appeal against Pali, Rama's display of Vishnu-form power, and the first combats between Sukhrip and Pali, ending with Rama revealing himself to the wounded Pali.

Translation

Asamukhi Seizes Phra Lak

Now the story will speak of the demon woman Asamukhi. Her breasts hung long; her body was huge, dark, and thick, tall to the height of a palm-tree top. Her tusks curved out to her ears, and her teeth were like an elephant's molars. Her eyes bulged, her tongue lolled out, and she lived in Himava. She used to catch bulls and deer and eat them in play. So the asura woman wandered and roamed along the forest path.

She glanced and saw Phra Hariwong, royal hand holding bow and arrow, walking together with mighty Phra Lak. She wanted to eat them for food, and the demon woman rejoiced in delight. She slipped behind the forest bushes, staring hard and waiting for her moment.

She saw the two royal lords with excellent forms, their faces more beautiful than Kosiy. One had a deep green body like a fashioned emerald. The younger one's body was soft yellow, delicate and stirring love. When she looked at the form of Lord Rama, the asura forgot to look at Phra Lak. When she looked at the younger brother, she was dazed and forgot the discus-bearing lord. The more she looked, the more she was delighted and overcome with love. The yaksha woman was as if her life would break. Desire burned and crowded her like poison-fire. She thought upon longing until love and bodily hunger filled her heart, and her spirit writhed and boiled.

"No. I will secretly go and lift up the slender young lord of the solar line." She came out from the forest bushes, gnashed her teeth, leapt, and sprang forward.

By her fierce power, all ten directions roared and shook. Darkness covered the rising sun and spread over the whole earth. She snatched up Phra Lak, and the demon woman was filled with gladness. She embraced him, kissed him, stroked him over all his body, lifted him, and flew away at once.

Then radiant Phra Kritsanurak saw the earth covered in darkness and heard a roaring like rushing wind. He turned and no longer saw his beloved younger brother. His chest burned like flame. He set the mighty victorious arrow, drew the Pala Chan, and shot it.

The sound thundered through the air, and the earth shook in dread. Light shone across the sky, and the lord of earth searched for his younger brother.

Then Phra Lak, the younger brother, saw the light of Phra Chakri's arrow shine. His senses returned. He understood that the yaksha woman had secretly seized him and flown away. Furious like fire, he recited a powerful spell.

By the force of his skillful charm, the demon woman's fierce strength was spent. She fell down from the clouds. The younger lord set his foot upon her chest, drew his sword, and cut off both her arms. The asura woman could no longer oppose him. He beat her with the victorious bow until all her body was bruised.

Then Asamukhi the yaksha woman felt pain and fear beyond measure. Grieving, she cried out and begged for life. She sprang up and ran away, blood flowing, face pale, body shaking. Thorns tore and slashed her like blades as she pushed through Himava.

Then the three-world lord, destroyer of worlds, searched along the road and found his younger brother, his other life. Joy rose in him as if he had gained Kosiy's treasure. He slipped his arms around him and embraced him, then spoke: "What has happened, Lak? We walked together and then you vanished. I wept and searched as if my heart had broken. What strange cause made my beloved brother part from me?"

Then Phra Lak, younger lord of the solar line, bowed his head to Rama's feet. Tears filled his eyes, and he reported: "Your younger brother followed Your Majesty, strong-armed lord, without knowing what would happen. Darkness covered the sun's light, and a wicked, ill-hearted yakshini seized me and carried me through the wide sky. Only when the Avatara's arrow-light shone, after a long while, did I regain my senses. Remembering Your Majesty's virtue, I recited a spell and caused the demon woman's power to fail. She fell to the ground. I was about to kill her and end her life, but she cried out for forgiveness and pleaded. So I cut off her left and right arms, beat her, drove her into the forest, and returned to meet Your Majesty's lotus feet."

Then wise Phra Chakri heard his brother tell what had happened, and the sky-passing lord spoke a royal word: "Because you are powerful, you were not defeated by the yakshini's force. Another would have lost his life to that ugly Kali-woman. May you prosper and endure, your power spreading through the three worlds. May you subdue the enemy yakshas and be a refuge for the world." Having spoken, he led his younger brother along the forest line. The two lords walked together, beautiful as sun and moon.

As they walked, they admired the trees, growing thick and layered, with blossoms, clusters, and fruit mingled together, sending out fragrant scent. Bees tasted and bathed themselves in perfume, flying among the sweet pollen. Fragrance filled the forest. The lord thought of the queen. The perfume was like the scent of beautiful Sida's shoulder-cloth. The flowering nang-yaem was like the lady smiling as she spoke. The si-siat tree was like her pressing close to him in sleep. Chong-nang flowers spread their tresses like his beloved loosening her hair. Sukrom was like his own chest, scorched and sorrowing, grief without end. Ka-long was like the elder brother lost after the deer; when he returned to find the lady, she was gone. Thinking this, his body sank in grief and tears flooded his eyes as he longed for the queen. Speaking their sorrow together, he walked with his radiant younger brother. After many nights on the road, they reached the Kattali forest.

Now the story will speak of the tree-deities in the forest. They dwelt in bright palaces above the trees. When they saw the two royal lords, they knew that Narai had incarnated to subdue the wicked yakshas. "Now Thotsakan the asura has stolen Sida and carried her away. The lord has come following her, and a great war will be born. The unrighteous yakshas will die, and the three worlds will be made firm. Let us make the discus-lord stop and stay here first, so he may gain the monkey armies and follow to destroy the asuras."

Having thought this, they displayed their power by radiant divine force. They caused Phra Chakri's body to become hungry, weary, and afflicted.

Then the three-world lord, destroyer of all worlds, walked on. His body was touched by the gods' power. He could no longer walk straight. His body and heart grew faint and shaken. The sun was hot like the fire of the age, and every kind of hardship pressed on him. He glanced and saw a great rose-apple tree, cool and shady beside the road. With effort, he walked beneath it and stopped to rest, taking shelter to cool himself.

A gentle wind blew softly, easing the exhaustion of hunger. He spoke graciously: "Look, beautiful younger brother. Today I am unwell. I will lie down and rest my body until my heart is calmer. When the sun's light leans into afternoon, we will go on together. Let me lay my head upon your lap. Beloved brother, sit and guard me." Having spoken, Phra Chakri, lord of earth, reclined and slept.

Hanuman Meets Rama

Now the story will speak of Hanuman, strong and powerful. He came out from the rite of discipline and wandered through the forest.

He saw the two lords of the solar line, their royal hands holding bows. One sat, with soft yellow body as if rubbed with gold; one lay sleeping, with deep green body, adorned like dark sapphire. Both had marks of greatness, surpassing all the world, more beautiful than gods. The more Hanuman looked, the more his eyes were delighted. The more he observed, the more he was lost in wonder. "They must be kings of the solar line. Why have they come walking strangely through the forest? If I cry out and ask, I fear the matter because I do not know them. I must use a trick to test and greet them, so I may bind love afterward." Having thought this, he raised joined hands and paid homage to the lord of great Kailasa. He recited spells, composed his heart, and worked by skillful magical knowledge.

He became a tiny monkey, small and slight, leaping and springing about. He ran over the trees and climbed along vines until he reached the righteous lord asleep.

When he came above the four-armed lord, the monkey stripped leaves from the tree, covered the branches, and scattered them down to fall upon the lord of earth's body.

Then blessed radiant Phra Lak saw leaves falling onto Phra Chakri, but only freshly stripped leaves were drifting down. Wonder rose in his heart. He looked up into the tree and saw a bold, proud monkey hidden in the fork, covered by leaves: a beautiful white male, pure and bright as a conch. He was about to shout at him, but he was careful not to wake Phra Chakri. So he lifted his royal hand and waved it, sharply enough to drive the monkey away. But though the prince drove him off many times, the monkey would not go as he wished. Instead, he stripped more leaves and scattered them down onto the exalted elder brother. Then Phra Lak seized his bow, drew it, and raised it, moving his royal arm.

Then bold Hanuman, skilled in war, saw the prince raise the bow to fight him. The monkey leapt down at once.

He snatched away the royal bow of radiant Phra Lak. Delighted by his strength, he fled quickly back up the tree.

There he drew the bow in play, leaping and dancing through the smaller and larger branches. He swung it about, mocked, winked, and lifted his brows.

Then Phra Lak, the younger brother, saw the monkey acting with proud arrogance and grew angry like the fire of the age. "Look at this tiny monkey. It does not know its life may end. It acts proud and bold, forcing in and stealing my bow. I am helpless only because the lord is asleep; that is how it could seize the bow. Otherwise its life would already be ended." Astonished, he woke Rama from sleep.

Then the three-world lord, destroyer of worlds, woke from his rest. The sky-passing lord spoke a royal word: "Has the sun already leaned into afternoon, my heart, that you wake me from sleep? Or has some event occurred here in the Himava forest?"

Then Phra Lak of the solar line bowed his head and told the righteous lord: "A fierce forest monkey stripped leaves and scattered them down, deliberately making them fall upon the arrow-bearing lord. Your younger brother drove him off gently with his hand, but the monkey only became more arrogant. I feared Your Majesty would wake from rest if I shouted at it. So I took the bow and raised it to frighten him. He leapt down, snatched away the royal bow, and swung it in mockery, winking and teasing. Helpless, I woke your lotus feet."

Then wise Phra Chakri heard his brother explain the matter. The sky-passing lord looked and saw a little white male monkey dancing on the tree branches. Mercy rose in his heart, and he said to Phra Lak: "This monkey seems bold and proud in power. His earrings, diamond fur, and jewel fangs are wondrous. His jewel fangs are lovely. His manner is not that of a forest monkey. Have you seen this, younger brother? Perhaps he has great power; that is why he can do such things."

Then blessed radiant Phra Lak heard Phra Chakri's command. He raised joined hands, bowed, and looked again. Searching over the monkey's whole body, he saw nothing strange with his eyes. Wonder and doubt rose in him. He paid homage and answered: "I have looked over the whole body of the splendid monkey. I do not see bright jewel fangs, earrings, or shining diamond fur like the four-armed lord has said."

Then bold Hanuman, skilled in war, heard the lord of earth's words as if they were the command his mother had given him: "If anyone sees the marks of your body, that one is Narai, the lord, incarnate to destroy the asuras. Stay as servant to Phra Chakri." Hanuman thought: "I will go down and attend the radiant three-world lord, crown of kings, so I may become the chief warrior who cleanses away the wicked asuras." Having thought this, the son of the Wind smiled in joy and changed back into splendid Hanuman. He climbed down through the trees.

When he arrived, he offered the royal bow back to the strong-armed lord, then bowed at his feet with lasting gladness.

Then Phra Narai of the solar line, bearer of the bow, received the bow from the monkey's hand. The lord of earth rejoiced and gave royal command: "Look, radiant monkey-lord. You, powerful one: what is your name?"

Then the gracious son of the Wind bowed his head and reported: "I am named Hanuman. Phra Phai is my father, radiant in brave power. Lovely Sawaha is my mother. She ordered me: 'Whoever sees the garland, bright jewel fangs, earrings, and diamond fur of this powerful monkey, that one is the serpent-bedded lord, come from the shining Milk Ocean to support the earth. You must remain beneath his feet.' Since Your Majesty comes with only two lords, cutting through forest and woodland with no troops or warriors, where is the sky-passing lord going? When I first found your lotus feet, I saw something strange and wondered. I acted too much and caused anger. Please show mercy to this monkey."

Then Phra Kritsanurak, bearer of the bow, listened to the son of the Wind plead and gave royal command: "At first, I accepted my father's pledge. Three of us came to live ordained in the forest, near the bank of the Goda River, taking pains to practice brahmacharya. That ugly, coarse, deluded ten-headed yaksha lord stole beautiful Lady Sida, my chief queen, and took her to Lanka city. I am following to cleanse and kill the yakshas, to take vengeance until the time is complete, and to end the whole common asura line."

Then brave and wise Hanuman, son of the Wind, heard the Avatara's command, bowed at the lotus feet, and reported: "For Your Majesty to go only as two lords, with no fourfold army, is not fitting. Great Lanka island lies across a hard and distant road. Thotsakan the asura has sharp, powerful might, and the demon lord's clan and lineage are fully supplied with soldiers and armies. Each one has terrible power, countless as the sea. I ask Phra Chakrakrit, mighty in battle, to gather warriors fit for war before going to cleanse the yaksha race. Now I have one uncle, named the powerful monkey Sukhrip. He is the younger brother of mighty Pali. They have quarreled, and his elder brother drove him into the forest. I will go bring him to attend your feet; I think you will gain warriors. As for the monkeys in Khitkhin, they are all of divine lineage. They have descended to wait for Phra Chakri, according to Phra Suli's command."

Then wise Phra Chakri heard bold Hanuman and gave command: "If you will go find Sukhrip, hurry now. I will wait. Quickly bring your uncle here so we can consult together about the war."

Then powerful Hanuman received the command, paid homage, and flew up into the sky.

He came swiftly with his strength and reached Amatang mountain. He approached powerful Sukhrip, raised joined hands, and told the matter: "Now Phra Narai has incarnated and descended to kill the yakshas. Two brothers have come following Lady Sida the queen. They sent me to find my royal uncle, to attend their lotus feet. They are staying in Kattali forest, without any retinue or soldiers."

Then powerful and brave Sukhrip heard the name of the Avatara, and all his hairs stood up. He was as glad as if he had gained the jeweled gem of a universal emperor. He left Amatang mountain, and the two of them flew by their power.

When they arrived, each bowed low at the feet of radiant Phra Narai with joy and delight, waiting to hear the four-armed lord speak.

Then the jeweled discus-lord of the solar line, bearer of the bow, saw the monkey king and spoke graciously: "Look, son of the Sun, strong and mighty in power. Why are you not in your city? Why are you wandering in the forest in such distress?"

Then the powerful son of the Sun heard the words of Phra Harirak. He raised joined hands to his face and reported: "The old cause was Thoraphi and my elder brother fighting in the great cave. He ordered me: 'If I do not have victory after seven days, seal the mountain cave.' When the appointed time arrived and I did not see him return, I acted according to the command of the splendid monkey. I had no fault in it. But Pali was angry like the fire of the age and drove me from the city of Khitkhin. So I have endured grief in the forest. I ask Phra Hariwong, righteous lord, to cleanse away the monkey's life. Then I will gather the powerful monkey troops, skilled in war, and offer them beneath the lord of earth's feet, raising them to destroy the asuras. Then I will volunteer for the discus-bearing lord, cut off the head of the ten-faced yaksha, and offer it beneath the dust of your feet. Lord of earth, show mercy."

Then Phra Hariwong, Narai himself, heard and commanded: "What you say is wrong. You and your elder brother have quarreled with each other. How can I take his life? It would bring blame and mockery in heaven and on earth."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, splendid monkey, heard Phra Chakri's command. He raised joined hands and answered: "Even if you kill Pali and end his life, there will be no reproach spoken, because he has long carried an old fault. When Phra Isuan, lord of the world, assembled the gods in heaven and bound the naga around Mount Meru so that all together might pull the mountain, the gods spent their power and strength, but golden Meru did not move from its place. I volunteered before Phra Suli, as gods and rishis all knew. With loyal truth, I pulled Mount Meru upright. The lord of the three worlds had enduring mercy and placed beautiful Lady Dara in a bright jeweled casket, entrusting her to mighty Pali to give as a reward to me, this monkey. Phra Narai also petitioned the great lord Isuan. Then fierce-hearted Pali swore an oath: if he was not truthful toward his younger brother, let the arrow of Phra Narai kill him. The monkey lord broke his vowed truth and acted corruptly, failing in dharma. In this age, lord of Vaikuntha, it is fitting that Pali die according to the fault that clings to him. Righteous lord, know this beneath your feet."

Then the three-world lord, destroyer of worlds, listened, remembered, and reflected. The sky-passing lord knew clearly in his heart and said: "Look, splendid monkey. I remember what you say. But how shall I meet the monkey in order to kill him? Go mock him to his face, make him angry, and let him come out to fight first. Then I will shoot and destroy him with an arrow, ending his life."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, splendid monkey, heard Phra Chakri's command, raised joined hands, and answered: "Mighty Pali received a blessing from Phra Isuan, the lord. If anyone fights against his power, half that one's bodily strength is lost. Kumbhandas, gandharvas, and gods all fear his power, famed everywhere. To go oppose and withstand him is something I fear beyond thought."

Then Phra Harirak, discus-lord, heard the son of the Sun and thought: "This monkey lord is discouraged and does not dare to oppose his elder brother. I must display my power so it is clear before his eyes." Having thought this, he gave a royal declaration: "Though your elder brother's power cannot be killed, I will sprinkle water over my arrow so that it shields you from Pali." As he spoke, he rose from his seat, beautiful as divine King Kosiy. The lord of earth pointed his hand toward the Tusita heaven and displayed power.

His body changed and became the form of Phra Narai, bearer of the bow, his radiance dark blue and graceful. Four hands held divine weapons, swinging them and displaying bold strength. He grasped the victorious arrow, raised and drew it, and shot it into the sky. The sound thundered through heaven and earth.

The arrow became stars, moon, and sun, floating bright through the sky. It lit the forest floor, its rays shining everywhere.

Then powerful Sukhrip and Hanuman, skilled and strong, saw the righteous lord return to the form of Narai, his body gleaming with radiance. The more they looked, the more beautiful and graceful he seemed, and the two monkeys rejoiced.

Then Hanuman, victorious and skilled, paid homage with joined hands. The monkey lord reported: "Since uncle will fight uncle, it is not fitting for me to remain. I ask leave of Your Majesty's feet to go far from body and eyes." Having spoken, he bowed at the lotus feet, took leave of the two royal lords of the solar line and of powerful Phraya Sukhrip, and flew away to the monkeys' dwelling.

Then the son of the Sun, skilled in battle, reported: "I invite the four-armed lord to go and cleanse Pali. I will lead your lotus feet straight to beautiful Khitkhin city. This time my life will be spared through the powerful glory of the lord of earth."

Then Phra Chakrarat, jeweled lord, heard the son of the Sun and invited his younger brother to walk on.

The two royal lords went with graceful stride, lovely as royal lions. They cut through the forest, and the monkey led them on. They crossed open fields, mountain slopes, streams, and bright hills without resting even for a moment. The lord of earth hurried onward.

Then gracious Sukhrip, when they came near great Khitkhin, paid homage and reported to the four-armed lord: "I invite Your Majesty to stop and rest here beneath this banyan shade. I will take leave and go mock the monkey so he comes out. May Your Majesty wait and kill him, destroying his life according to how he broke truth with the lord of the world."

Then radiant Phra Kritsanurak walked into the banyan shade.

A gentle wind blew softly. The lord of earth stopped and sat there. He purified the victorious arrow with water, sprinkling it over powerful Sukhrip. Then he spoke and gave blessing: "You will go contend in power with your elder brother. Even if Pali holds divine weapons, let his killing force not touch your body."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, splendid monkey, received the arrow-water and Phra Chakri's blessing. He rejoiced as if he had gained the sixteen heavens. The fear he had felt toward Pali, lord of monkeys, faded and dissolved away. He bowed his head, raised joined hands, took leave of the two glorious lords, and flew away.

When he arrived, he floated before the palace and shouted a proclamation that shook everything: "Hey, hey, son of King Hatsanai! Why do you not stand in truth and dharma? You are the elder, yet you do not think; you have acted corruptly and in delusion. Lady Dara, moon-bright woman, was given by Phra Isuan as my reward. You oppressed her and kept her for your own delight, sharing pleasure and love. That time you broke your truth-vow, and still your heart was not satisfied. I am your younger brother by blood; I had no fault. You showed no mercy or care, but drove me from the city. Now the appointed time has come. You will not escape with your monkey life. If you are good, hurry out and fight me. I will destroy your life."

Then the brave son of King Hatsanai heard Sukhrip denounce him and burned like the fire of destruction. He sprang up and shouted: "Hey, deluded wretch! I thought of you as born from the same womb, and so I did not kill you. I only drove you from the royal city, yet you still dare to speak like this. I will cut off your head and impale it, to satisfy my heart against this fool." As he spoke, he drew the royal sword, gnashed his teeth, swung it high, and stamped his feet so heaven shook. He was about to fly up and fight.

Then jewel-like Dara, beautiful lady, was alarmed. She embraced her husband's feet and pleaded, holding him back: "Your Majesty is wise. Stop and think first. How could powerful Phraya Sukhrip oppose Your Majesty? He feared your lotus feet before. For him now to return to battle seems strange. It is likely that someone has joined his thought, and that is why his spirit has swelled with arrogance. Your servant sees this as very strange. If you rush out rashly to kill him, your glory may be damaged, and you may be ashamed before subjects and people."

Then Phraya Pali, skilled in war, heard his chief queen and spoke gracious words: "Why should I fear that lowborn one, that he would dare meet his elder brother? Even if others help him fight, I do not fear their power. Let them come in hundreds of thousands, countless as the sea; I will kill them until they die. He spoke coarsely, shaming me before the gods. I cannot delay and endure it. Do not be afraid in your heart. Who can withstand my power?" Having spoken, he flew out to win victory against his younger brother.

Then powerful and brave Sukhrip waited, then withdrew a little, deliberately luring Phraya Pali. When they came near the Garuda-bearing lord, he turned and fought without retreat. The two mighty ones fought power against power, each refusing to lessen his force.

Then the jeweled discus-lord of the solar line, bearer of the bow, saw the two monkey kings fighting in tangled combat. Each was bold and strong, grappling and striking, turning swiftly like wheels. He gazed and could scarcely follow them. His heart doubted how to distinguish elder from younger. He raised the bow many times, but did not know how to release the arrow. Wonder and doubt filled the lord's heart, and he fixed his eyes on them without looking away.

Then the brave son of Makhawan kicked and drove against his younger brother with swift power. Seeing his chance, he paused in thought. Pity rose in him, and he could not kill him. So he seized Sukhrip and hurled him away to the mountain slope at the edge of the world.

Having won the combat, the powerful monkey flew wandering and leaping back to the splendid demon-like palace.

Then powerful and brave Sukhrip fell upon the mountain at the rim of the world, but his monkey body was not bruised or wounded because of Phra Hariwong's blessing and the water sprinkled over the arrow. Furious like consuming fire, he flew back at once.

When he arrived, he stood and cried out in coarse reproach: "Look, Phra Ram the rishi. You are no good man. You deliberately came and spoke to deceive me. You sent me to fight my elder brother until my life nearly ended. You are an ascetic without truth or dharma, deluded, base, and low."

Then the three-world lord, destroyer of every realm, heard Sukhrip speak proud words, bold and unafraid of his glory. He did not hold the monkey's words against him, as a father does not hold the words of a son. He spoke graciously: "It is not that I deliberately spoke to deceive you. Do not be hurt in heart, splendid monkey. You and Phraya Pali are similar in bearing and body. I drew my arrow to the string and raised it, meaning to release it, but as I looked I could not distinguish whom to kill. I was unsure and could not shoot the monkey. As he spoke, he tore off a strip of his royal cloth and gave it to Sukhrip, skilled in war. "Tie this around your right arm and go back to fight. Then I will be able to set the arrow without doubt."

Then gracious Sukhrip heard the lord of earth's command and bowed in gladness. He reported: "May Your Majesty show mercy and forgive the fault of your servant, the splendid monkey, for speaking rash and coarse words. Lord of earth, show mercy." Having spoken, he tied the royal cloth around his right arm, bowed his head in acceptance, raised joined hands, took leave, and flew back by monkey power.

When he arrived, he shouted down: "How is it, lord of Khitkhin? We fought until heaven and earth shook, but before the sun had set, you fled back without shame. Look like a slow, deluded man! That one is powerful Death himself, come now to take your life."

Then the radiant son of King Hatsanai heard and grew angry like fire. He drew his powerful royal sword, swung it, stamped his feet with a cracking sound like lightning, and leapt upward through the clouds with fierce weapon-strength.

He sprang, leapt, thrust, and grappled, swift in turning and fighting. One hand swung the weapon, thrusting, stabbing, opposing, and battling.

Then powerful and brave Sukhrip fought with skill, resisting and withdrawing so Pali could not close in. He lured him by battle-stratagem until he drew near the discus-lord, then leapt and sprang in to resist his power. The sound thundered through every direction of the upper sky. Each was bold; each was mighty. They struck and received blows in confusion. Each had force in battle, fighting close and locked together, like Phra Isuan lord of the world and Phra Chakri displaying power against one another. Both showed their strength, thrusting and striking without easing their hands.

Then Phra Narai of the solar line, bearer of the bow, glanced up into the sky and saw the two monkeys fighting. He recognized Sukhrip, and the lord of earth took up the splendid arrow. He drew it, aimed at Pali's chest, found his moment, and shot by his power.

Then the brave son of King Hatsanai saw the arrow coming straight at him and caught at it swiftly. Looking down to the earth, to the place beneath the great banyan, he saw that ascetic holding the victorious bow. Anger rose in him, and he flew down.

When he arrived, he shouted aloud: "Hey, forest yogi ascetic! You build vows and practice meditation. Why have you done this? We two brothers are angry and fighting one another. It is no business of you two rishis. You join in killing and fighting. Is this good conduct, forest ascetic? We two are brothers from one womb. However far anger goes between us, why do you proudly come to destroy my life? What fault of mine do you claim? Speak it."

Then the three-world lord, destroyer of worlds, heard and commanded: "Look, Phraya Pali. I am Narai incarnate, descended to destroy the yakshas. I am named Phra Ram Chakri. I have no jealousy or unrighteousness. Think back to the past, when Phra Isuan gave beautiful Lady Dara to your younger brother, born from the same womb as you. You received her and made an oath: if you did not give her, may you die by the light of my arrow. Therefore I have destroyed you in battle according to the fault you had prepared for yourself. The victorious arrow has struck your chest. What fault can you raise against me?" Having spoken, he displayed mighty power, and all directions of the sky grew dark.
