Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the third สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It completes Triburam's destruction, gives Nontok's diamond-finger episode and Narai's dance-disguise, then narrates the birth and early training of Thotsakan and the birth of Phiphek.

Translation

Phra Isuan Prepares the War Against Triburam

[Rai]

Then Phra Isuan, supreme lord, heard the hosts of gods. The lord above the sky grew angry like black fire. "Look at that Triburam. He has come acting boldly and boasting of courage. He has broken his sworn word. I will destroy him and make his life end."

Having spoken, he gave a command: "Listen, Thao Kosiy. To end this misery now, I see no one able except supreme Brahma and glorious Phra Narai. Chitubot and Chitubat, hurry away. Invite lord Brahma and Narai here."

Then brave Chitubot and Chitubat bowed their heads to receive the divine command, took leave, and flew away.

When they reached the two lords, they sat down, raised joined hands, and bowed. They said: "The lord of the three worlds sent us to report the matter. Triburam the asura tramples the gods in every place and causes suffering and distress. Please come now, lotus-footed lords."

Then the radiant Lord of the Discus and Phra Dhada heard Phra Suli's command. Each displayed his power and flew away.

They reached Mount Kailasa, raised joined hands, bowed, and waited to hear the command of the lord of the three worlds in the midst of the gods.

Then Phra Swayambhu, supreme lord, saw supreme Brahma and the radiant Lord of the Discus. He said: "Now Triburam is acting basely and wickedly. We will destroy his life and end this poison, this thorn of the earth."

Then radiant Phra Narai and Brahma received Phra Suli's divine command. They lifted joined hands and said: "To end misery and cool the heads of all gods great and small, your kindness surpasses the three worlds, like a victorious parasol shading the sun."

Then the crown of Mount Kailasa gave a gracious command concerning the attack on the demon lord: "This battle is ancient and primordial. It will endure until the end of an age. Only Narai's incarnation will go down to slay the asura."

Having spoken, he took the strength of Brahma and joined it with his own fierce power to make a diamond breastplate, splendidly fashioned and supreme in force over the earth. He took the strength of Mount Meru and made it the victorious bow named Maha Loha Moli, shining with power. He took the strength of Ananta Naga, whose venom is terrible, and made it the bowstring. The strength of Phra Narai became the arrow that would destroy the asura's body. Every weapon was made from the strength of divine beings of every rank. When this was finished, Phra Suli ordered the fierce warriors to be arranged.

Then Chitubot, strong and firm in power, received the righteous lord's command, bowed, and came out.

He appointed Phra Khantha Kumar, radiant and victorious in power, as the vanguard. He commanded asuras, khamot spirits, and demons. Phra Rahu held the divine victory banner. Phra Phinet was the left wing, commanding plague-ghosts and phrai spirits great and small. Wise Phra Phinai was the right wing and commanded the gandharvas. At the body of the army, powerful Phra Kan commanded the vidyadharas. Thao Vessuwan was the quartermaster and brought the kumbhanda hosts into battle. Phra Phloeng held the rear, commanding asura bodies, bhutas, and ghosts. All brandished weapons in uproar, waiting for the lord of the three worlds to depart.

Then Phra Isuan, supreme lord, when the dawn light cleared, came to wash and bathe.

He bathed and refreshed himself, then put on sweet divine perfume. His lower garment had ornate raised borders, and his gold-worked cloth shone with floating jewel designs. Side panels and hanging sashes flashed, set with gems like fireflies. He wore a light jeweled cuirass, necklaces, breast ornaments, chains, golden directional plates, dragon armlets set with emeralds and rubies, yellow diamond rings in Garuda settings, a jeweled crown with golden ear ornaments, garlands, and shining divine flowers. He took up the mighty Moli bow of terrible power, and the hosts of gods followed him.

When he arrived, he mounted the royal bull, powerful, bold, and brave, and ordered the divine army to move. Phra Rahu waved the banner and led the way.

The royal bull Usupharat was fierce in battle, vast and high. Its four feet were mottled and shining; its tail was beautifully white and bright. Its face was marked like a golden bodhi leaf. It moved smoothly, swiftly, and boldly. Its whole body was fitted with brilliant ornaments, all made of the nine great jewels. It was adorned with clustered parasols, rows of banners, regalia and flywhisks; fans waved above like wind. Pipes and drums sounded in dense ranks. The shout was as if the world would fall. Warriors grew eager for battle, roaring and shaking their weapons, and hurried through the air.

When they reached the city of Solot, he halted the great army and ordered his honored son to enter and surround the capital.

Then radiant Phra Khantha Kumar received the command and drove the army in according to the divine order.

Then the brave hosts of pisacha spirits shouted in clamor and advanced together to surround the demon city.

Triburam Is Destroyed

Then brave-hearted Triburam stood at the ornate jeweled window and looked out. He saw the enemy kings and their great army coming up to the royal city. He burned with anger like the fire at the end of an age.

"Look at this. Who is so proud in power and unafraid that life will end? Their forces are only a little handful. How could they match an asura's skill?"

Having spoken, he gave a royal command to his brave demon ministers: "Levy the army. I will go kill the enemy."

Then the great yaksha ministers received the command of the lord of the earth, bowed with joined hands, and returned.

They selected and arranged troops in divisions, inspecting them according to the order of a great army. All held mighty weapons, ready in the palace forecourt.

Then powerful Triburam, brave in heart, adorned himself, took a club, and leaped up into the chariot.

He ordered the victorious chariot moved. Dust darkened and covered the sky. The shouting thundered until it reached Solot, and he drove the tenfold army swiftly out.

When he came outside the royal gate, he halted the soldiers great and small and set them firmly as a battle line. Looking out, he saw the lord of the world. His face went pale, and he stood stunned in thought, wounded and sorrowful in heart. Both afraid and angry, the demon king did not bow with joined hands. He cried out arrogantly: "Why has the radiant lord of wisdom raised an army to attack me? What wrong have I done?"

Then the crown of great Kailasa heard him and called back: "Hey, fierce-hearted wretch. You yourself are wicked and corrupt, holding falsehood in blind delusion. Formerly, when you asked me for a boon, you said you would guard righteousness and custom. Why then do you oppress the world, gods, humans, and sages, causing suffering throughout the earth? I will not spare your life, demon lord."

Then the asura Triburam heard the divine royal command. Arrogant anger rose in him. "If this has reached fate's decree, it is better to spend my life fighting. I will not beg Phra Isuan. Let this be made known upon the earth." Having thought this, he ordered the kumbhanda hosts: "Separate and strike the spirits and ghosts. Kill them all by your victorious power."

Then the warrior asura hosts bowed their heads to receive the demon king's command and drove themselves leaping out.

Some chased, attacked, cut, and struck, fearing no ghosts. They invaded boldly, broke through for victory, and shouted until everything trembled in uproar.

Then brave Phra Khantha Kumar saw the asura army advancing together against the forest ghosts. He raged like black fire and stamped his foot until everything trembled. He drove the plague-ghosts and ha-spirits into battle, pushing forward to destroy the kumbhandas.

Heads and bodies were cut off everywhere by the strength of fierce power. They died, broke, and fell piled on one another as the attackers hacked and pressed the assault.

Then the yaksha Triburam saw his troops shattered and dying in confusion. The asura brandished his mace-weapon, leaped down from his victorious chariot, and chased the forest-ghost troops in turmoil. The sound thundered up to the Kanirot level as if the earth would sink beneath his power.

Then Phra Isuan, supreme lord, saw Triburam the asura entering to fight the forest spirits. In anger he roared like a lion, drove the noble bull forward, took Narai as the victorious arrow, and shot it out with power.

He twanged the bow three times, but the arrow did not leave the string, because Phra Narai was sound asleep. Phra Suli grew angry like poisonous fire and threw the sacred arrow away from his hand.

Then Phra Narai, who was the arrow, startled awake from sleep. The lord bowed at Phra Suli's feet and said: "The reason I did not destroy and kill the yaksha Triburam is that you, crown of the earth, did not allow me to destroy the asura. By chance I fell drowsily asleep because of the boon you had granted the yaksha. I have caused offense beneath your feet; lord of the world, please be gracious."

Then radiant Phra Isuan heard the answer and saw that it was right. He spoke: "Triburam the demon lord cannot be slain by an arrow. I must kill him with the fire of my eye and burn him to ashes, dust of the age."

Having spoken, he took up the jeweled tube, brandished it with shining radiance, and focused the eye upon the kumbhanda by his victorious power.

At once it became caustic fire. It burned all the warrior hosts, and Triburam the demon lord also lost his life by the power of Phra Suli.

When the destruction of the asura yaksha was complete, the radiant pillar of the world had the Moli bow taken and placed in the city of Mithila. The jeweled breastplate he entrusted to the ascetic Phra Akhata, strong in vows and meditation, to await Phra Hari, wielder of the discus, when he would incarnate and come down to subdue the yakshas. The breastplate was to be offered to the lord who rides Garuda, to protect against enemy weapons. Then he disbanded the divine guardian army and went to the highest place, the heavenly palace.

The Sons of Latsatian

Then among the five chief queens of Thao Latsatian the asura, four of the beautiful women conceived. They gave birth to royal princes, beautiful in form and strong. The son of Sunantha was named Kuperan the asura. The child of radiant Thepphanasun was powerful. The son of beautiful Chitramala was Akhrathada. The son of Nang Woraphraphai was named the yaksha Maran. All four young royal women loved their children as their own lives. Morning and evening they supported and cherished them, caressing their faces, singing to them, and soothing their hearts. Nurses and milk-mothers were all chosen for beauty and skill.

Nontok's Diamond Finger

Now the tale will speak of Nontok, brave in spirit. Since Phra Swayambhu had appointed him to wash the feet of the gods, he had remained always at the stairway of Kailasa. The powerful gods slapped his head and rubbed his face. Some made him dip water to wash their feet; some pulled out his hair in confusion. His hair became cropped and bald up to his ears. Looking at his reflection in the water, he wept, snorted in anger, and his heart tightened. His eyes reddened like lightning. "I am a man, yet men come to insult me. If I do not die, I will see their faces again." Having thought this, he hurried away to attend Phra Isuan, lord of gods.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet and said to radiant Phra Isuan: "You are the pillar of the earth, merciful to all faces. Whoever does right before your feet receives boons and honor. I have done great service, washing the feet of divine guardians for ten million years. Yet you, lord of mighty power, have not favored my head. What karma or fate has brought this upon me?" As he spoke, he grieved and lamented.

Then Phra Isuan, supreme creator, saw Nontok grieving in misery. The righteous lord felt compassion and gave a divine command: "Say quickly what you desire. I will give it according to your thought. Do not grieve and mourn so much."

Then noble-hearted Nontok bowed his head and said: "I ask a boon, lord of the three worlds: make my finger a diamond of power. Whoever I point at, let his life end. Then I will serve beneath your feet until my life is done."

Then radiant Phra Swayambhu heard Nontok's speech. The lord was silent and thought: "This one has served well for a long time. I must grant him a boon." Having thought this, he gave the victorious blessing: "May your wish be accomplished."

Then ruthless-hearted Nontok received the boon of honored Phra Suli, bowed in farewell, and went away.

When he reached the Kailasa stairway, he sat cross-legged smiling at the edge of the great basin, waiting for the hosts of gods and celestial beings with a swollen, arrogant heart.

Then gods, asuras of power in every direction, garudas, gandharvas, and vidyadharas all came to attend Phra Suli.

When they reached the foot of Kailasa, gandharvas, divine kings, and sages urged one another along and went toward the stair.

Nontok washed their feet, but when they were about to go on, they grabbed his head and shook it, teasing and playing with him as they did every day, laughing and mocking with great noise.

Then brave-hearted Nontok was enraged. He shouted in proclamation: "Alas, you bully me in play every day until there is no hair left on my head. My patience is at an end. Today we shall see one another." He clenched his teeth and pointed his finger.

It struck garudas, gods, and nagas like poison lightning that no one could withstand. They fell scattered at once and perished before a blink.

Then Hatsanai, lord of the Thirty-Three, saw Nontok using his power and pointing at the gods until they died. He was startled and stood thinking: "Who granted power to him so he can kill?" Having thought this, he went up to attend the lord of wisdom in the shining jeweled divine palace.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet and told radiant Phra Isuan: "Nontok is using power. He points at the gods and they perish. Did you, righteous lord, grant him that diamond finger? Why does he act so proudly, fearing nothing beneath your feet?"

Then Phra Isuan, supreme lord, heard Amarin and gave an answer: "That one served well for a long time, so I gave him a boon. He has turned traitor and rebelled in heart, committing such a base act."

Having spoken, he gave a command: "Listen, radiant Phra Narai. You, mighty one, are the refuge of the gods. Help quiet and end this misery, cooling all the world and heaven. Go slay that unrighteous one and make his life end."

Then lord Phra Narai received the command, bowed in farewell, came out, and transformed his body by power.

He became a beautiful celestial woman, slender, graceful, and splendid. Moving her hands and stepping delicately, she went to the place where Nontok would come walking.

Then brave-hearted Nontok, after the time of attending the lord of the world was done, went wandering in bodily pleasure.

[Praise of Beauty]

He glanced and saw a woman of splendid beauty. Her face shone like the bright moon. Her lips were beautiful, her cheeks beautiful, her hairline beautiful; her eyes, arms, breasts, ears, brows, and whole body were beautiful beyond celestial maidens. Her manners and movements were graceful; her waist and every softness of her body were lovely. Even the beauty of chief Lakshmi and beloved Sarasvati, and all the three worlds to the end of the earth, could not be brought to compare with her. Wherever he looked, his love grew. The more he gazed, the more his thoughts bound themselves to her, and he walked quickly closer.

"Beautiful one, beautiful and graceful, lovely and tender, beloved: from which level of heaven have you come? What is your name, goddess? I wish to know what you desire. Why have you come to be here? I see you as one worthy of compassion. Lovely one, tell me your business."

Then Narai in woman's form, young and lovely, heard him and increased the deception. She glanced with her eyes and answered: "Why do you come intruding and asking, pressing near in such a forward way? You have no courtesy. I am a servant of the lord of the world. My duty is dancing and performance. My name is Suwanna Apsorn, beloved. I am in distress and have wandered down, hoping my burning sorrow may be eased."

"Utterly beloved, strange beauty beyond celestial maidens, even your speech and movement are graceful. You are fit to be a dancer of splendid form. Tell me clearly your business, whether heavy or light. If my fortune has ever supported love, perhaps it will bear fruit. I have not intruded upon you. You cannot hold this matter against me. Heavenly maiden, heart of the sky, medicine of my heart, I have no companion and can depend only on friendship."

Then the divinely made woman of beautiful form cast him a sidelong look and answered: "Your words are exceedingly sweet. But as for entrusting friendship to me, do not speak of that; I do not know it. I am an inner dancer. I can have a friend bound to my heart only in the art of dancing. If you can dance, come dance with me. Then it will be as you desire."

Then brave-hearted Nontok, not knowing Narai had come in disguise, was filled with multiplied joy. Smiling, he spoke fair words: "Listen, splendid heavenly woman. Why should you worry? I am an old hand and understand enough. Please dance, lady, through every posture you remember. I will dance after you and will not miss the song of my goddess."

Then Phra Narai, radiant and blessed, saw Nontok caught in the trick and rejoiced. He feigned graceful steps, moving his hands to entice him.

Hands worshipping the gods; the first pose; Brahma with four faces; threading the garland; deer walking in the forest; swans flying; kinnari passing the shining cave; slow sleeping lady; bees clustering; parrot on the sloping cliff; Mekhala tossing the bright jewel; peacock dancing in the sky; wind moving banana leaves; Brahma's creation; beloved one arranging the pillow; shifting to the fish watching the sea; the four-armed lord throwing the mighty discus. Nontok danced after him, absorbed and deluded with love. When they reached the posture of the naga coiling its tail in a circle, he pointed straight and struck his own thigh at once.

By the power of the sacred diamond finger, his leg broke and he fell, unable to stand. The woman changed into Phra Narai, who stepped on him to slay and destroy him.

Then Nontok, brave and skilled in battle, saw the lord bearing conch and mace, four-armed, and knew clearly in his heart that this was the powerful lord of Hari's line, deceiving him to take his life. He asked: "What is my offense? Tell me."

Then Phra Narai, supreme lord, heard him and spoke: "Your offense is very great. In your arrogance and unrestraint you did not fear the power of Phra Isuan, wielder of the discus. You killed gods and divine guardians. Your offense is heavy and has reached death. I have compassion in mind, but I cannot spare your life." Having spoken, he swung the terrible trident, whose light scattered like black fire.

Then brave-hearted Nontok heard him and answered: "If you will destroy my life, why did you not do it face to face? You used deceit, becoming a woman without shame. Or were you afraid this diamond finger would point at you and destroy you? I have only two hands. How could I fight your four arms? If I had four hands like you, victorious lord, how could you have done this?"

Then radiant Phra Narai heard him and answered: "I came transformed as a woman because you were due to die, ruined by deluded desire. It was not because I feared the power of your diamond finger. In this life you have only two hands. Go be born again in a new life: have ten heads, ten faces, terrible power, and fly through the sky. Have twenty hands, left and right, holding maces, weapons, bows, and arrows. I will become a human with only two arms and follow to destroy your life, ending the line of your power, visible to all the gods." Having spoken, the lord brandished the trident and cut off his head, sending it flying away.

When he had destroyed Nontok in death, the Lord of the Discus flew swiftly through the sky and went to the Ocean of Milk.

Thotsakan Is Born

Then Queen Ratchada, chief consort of Thao Latsatian, bore a royal son. Nontok had come into birth as that prince. He was named Prince Thotsakan, with ten heads, ten faces, and twenty arms. His younger brother, born next, was named Kumbhakan, skilled in battle. Their royal father and mother did not neglect them for a moment.

Then Prince Thotsakan, yaksha prince, when he had grown to fourteen years of age, thought that he wished to study the arts of knowledge and make his power shine in bravery. He set out and came to attend his royal father and mother.

When he arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of his royal father and mother and said: "As for me, your child, I have no knowledge of any kind. I ask leave to go live in the forest with the great holy sage and study victorious archery. Please be merciful."

Then his royal father and mother heard their beloved son ask leave. Their joy multiplied greatly. They embraced him and received him with blessings: "You, splendid heart of our lives, will go live with the sage in the forested mountain. He will train and teach you victorious archery; whatever you study, may you master it all. May it accord with your desire, royal son, and may your honor be famous and spread."

Then Prince Thotsakan, skilled in battle, raised joined hands and bowed his head to receive his father and mother's blessing. After that he bowed at the lotus feet, took leave of both rulers, left the city of Lanka, and went straight to the wilderness.

When he reached the hermitage of Phra Khobut, the great meditating teacher, he entered the leaf-hut and paid homage to the great ascetic.

Then the ascetic Phra Khobut saw the honored son of Thao Latsatian and asked: "Listen, Prince Thotsakan. Why have you come? Why are there no armies or servants with you? Your grandfather is deeply puzzled."

Then the ten-headed one of the solar line, wielder of the discus, heard him and raised his hands to his face. He said: "Your beloved grandson has come out to study the arts with you, teacher, so that I may become expert and mighty in power. Supreme grandfather, please have mercy."

Then the great sage Phra Khobut heard him with delight. He stroked the asura's back and answered: "Your grandfather's knowledge is very weighty. Be diligent and I will teach you. Victorious archery too you shall obtain in every way you desire."

Then Thotsakan of the solar line, brave in heart, set his mind to serve his teacher and constantly learned the sciences. He became swift with bow and arrow, skilled in hand, shooting accurately without fault. Whatever came from the Three Vedas, spells, or magical knowledge, he remembered quickly by wisdom. At dawn he bowed to the powerful meditating teacher, took leave, went out from the hermitage hall, and wandered in the forest.

He traveled through mountain lands and open fields, across wide streams and highlands, and found the garden of mighty Phra Arachun. The yaksha lord walked in.

He turned and wandered, admiring the many flowers blooming and spreading in the branches. Sao-yut and nang-yaem mingled with leaves; layered jasmine, cockscomb, and prayong. With his right hand he seized and broke jeweled branches; with his left he plucked nom-maeo and maha-hong flowers. He took phikun, roses, khan-song, kalong, saraphi, champa, roi-lin, in-chan, tumtat, pring, prang, langsat, phluang, wa, durian, mangosteen, lamut, guava, longan, and phawa, all lovely to see. Mango trees carried ripe and half-ripe clusters, with beautiful leaves, close, cool, and shaded. He saw kannika, karaket, and sukrom, then roamed happily around the lotus pond: linchong, chongkolni blooming, blue lotuses mingled with pods and raised stalks. He played in delight in the forest garden.

Now the tale will speak of radiant Phra Arachun. He dwelt in a jeweled palace on the summit of Mount Cakravala. His power and sacred force in archery were renowned, his might shining like the bright sun. No one in the six heavens or the underworld could withstand his power. Every seven days he was accustomed to roam and admire the trees in his splendid garden. He adorned himself with bright ornaments, slung on his bow, tucked in his trident, and flew away.

When he reached the flower garden, he saw plants and trees great and small, with branches broken everywhere, and was astonished: "Who has done this without fearing me?" Glancing away, he saw the yaksha lord with ten heads and ten faces, laughing. In anger he said: "Hey, kumbhanda. What is your name? Of what solar line are you, and where is your city? Why are you so proud and bold as to break branches in my garden? Do you not fear me, bearer of the sacred bow, famous and brave in the ten directions? You have come into the hand of Lord Time. I will destroy you now."

Then the ten-faced yaksha prince heard and grew angry like fire. The asura shouted back: "What is your name, you who speak such overbold and crude words? I am a lord of power, named Thotsakan, demon king, shoot of Thao Latsatian of the solar line, who rules the royal seat of Lanka. Phra Khobut, master of meditation, is my teacher and taught me victorious archery. I came wandering to gather plants and did not know whose garden this was. Seeing flowers blooming beautifully, I thought it was forest land. Do not boast of your power. How will you fight me, the lion-king? You are like a deer, fit to lose your life."

Then Phra Arachun heard him and grew angry like age-ending fire. His body shook, and he shouted in proclamation: "I am the god Arachun, whose power shakes heaven and earth." Having spoken, he brandished the victorious bow and drove in to destroy the asura.

Then brave-hearted Prince Thotsakan dodged and answered in uproar, swinging his bow and raising it to attack.

Each was brave, each bold; each struck and parried without retreat. Each intended to kill the other in battle, and each drew his splendid bow and shot.

Then Phra Arachun drew his bow, set the arrow on the string, stood firm, and shot with a thunderous sound that shook the air in uproar.

The arrow changed into a serpent, chased the yaksha, coiled around his body, bound him everywhere, carried him up into the sky, and circled about.

Then the great teacher Phra Khobut was in meditation, entering absorption and collecting his mind in his forest hut. He heard a thunderous sound like lightning striking the splendid mountain. "Ah! What has happened to Thotsakan in the forest? I must follow and learn the matter." Having considered this, the holy ascetic came out from the hermitage and flew away by his power.

He found Phra Arachun, divine lord, using a powerful serpent to bind Thotsakan's body and carry him through the clouds. Afraid that Thotsakan would die, he said: "Listen, divine one. Why have you done this?"

Then victorious Phra Arachun heard the great sage and said: "The asura is vile. He came and broke branches in my garden, boasted of his power, and spoke arrogant words. So I made an example of him to satisfy myself."

Then wise Phra Khobut heard and soothed him in answer: "Please have mercy. Thotsakan has done wrong enough for his life to end, but he has been my pupil from youth. I ask that you grant the asura his life."

Then radiant Phra Arachun heard the sage Phra Khobut pleading, and his heart softened. He said: "Since you ask pardon for him, though I am angry I must forgive." Having spoken, he immediately released the bonds and flew away to his jeweled palace.

Then Phra Khobut, powerful meditating teacher, took the asura Thotsakan and flew back to the forest hut.

Phiphek Is Sent Into Lanka

Now the tale will speak of radiant Phra Mahesuan. He looked down upon the earth and understood in his spirit that Nontok had gone into birth as the yaksha Thotsakan, son of Latsatian in Lanka, with ten heads, ten faces, and twenty arms. He was exceedingly coarse and cruel. The three worlds would burn and tremble; no one would be able to fight him. Phra Narai, bearer of the bow, would have to incarnate and go down to wage war against the kumbhandas, all of whom had bold and mighty power.

"I must send Wetsuyan to be born in the same lineage as Thotsakan. When the four-armed lord goes down, he will be able to ask about matters, light and heavy. Wetsuyan will be a spy inside the yaksha city. Then this base lineage will end."

Having considered this, Phra Swayambhu gave a divine royal command to the divine son Wetsuyan: "You must descend. Be born from the same womb as the ten-headed one. Learn astrology and occult knowledge. Wait for mighty Narai, and tell him the strategies by which to destroy the asuras." Then he gave him wondrous crystal lenses to become his left and right eyes, so that he could see throughout the three worlds as if with the divine eyes of the gods.

Then radiant Wetsuyan received the blessing of righteous Phra Isuan together with the powerful crystal lenses. He rejoiced, bowed his head in reverence, took leave of the supreme lord's feet, and descended from heaven into the womb of Ratchada Thewi.

Then beautiful Queen Ratchada, chief consort of Latsatian the asura, became pregnant and gave birth to a beloved child. He was named Prince Phiphek, sharp and firm in mindfulness and wisdom. But his power was weak and mild, not like Thotsakan, Kumbhakan, Thut, Khon, Trisian, and their lovely younger sister. All of them had fierce and powerful strength. Nang Sammanakkha was the youngest, born last from the womb. Their royal mother and father loved them more than their left and right eyes. Among their royal sons and daughter, their love increased greatly.
