Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the thirtieth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Pali's death and royal funeral, Dara's mourning, Sukhrip's enthronement in Khitkhin, Rama's move to Khanthamat mountain, Indra's jeweled pavilion, Rama and Lak laying aside their ascetic dress, and Lak's mission to press Sukhrip to gather the monkey armies.

Pali Entrusts His House to Rama

Then the radiant son of Thao Hatsanai heard the royal word. The monkey lord looked over the ascetic's body and saw that the form had changed into Lord Narai. The hair of his head and body stood on end in fear of the lord's power. He became still, remembered, and thought, and he understood that he had done wrong. His body, senses, and life had reached the day appointed by Brahma. With one hand he held the royal arrow, and with one hand he joined his palms at the glorious feet. He said: "I, Pali, bear fault just as Your Majesty has commanded. My merit is too small; I did not serve at the feet of the lord of the three worlds. I entrust to you Sukhrip, my younger brother; Angkhot, my monkey son; radiant Hanuman, my beloved nephew; lovely Dara, my dear wife; my countless women, soldiers, and people. May the king show mercy to them."

Then the four-handed lord, radiant with auspicious light, heard Phraya Pali and answered by royal command: "Look, lord of Khitkhin, son of Indra and noble in mind. I too feel affection for you and hoped to make you endure. I would ask for only half a drop of blood to worship the Brahmastra, the arrow's light, and to wash away the monkey's oath, ending the fault you have carried from before. Then you would enjoy happiness and delight hereafter. Only the wound would stay on your body, as small as a hair split seven times."

Then the radiant king of monkeys answered Phra Chakri's command: "I too am counted as a man, with royal rank in the solar line and the shining race of Amarin. If a wound remained on my body, I would fear shame before all the gods. Since the deed is done, I will endure the loss of life. What measure can be taken now? I bow and take leave of the king, going to the heavenly realm."

When he had taken leave of the four-handed lord, the monkey, grieving in sorrow, gave orders to Sukhrip his younger brother: "Brother, I am leaving life behind. You will remain as servant of the discus-bearing lord. Protect one another, uncle and nephews. Attend him morning and evening at every time. Do not be lazy or follow only your own wishes. Whatever the lord asks, do not make light of it; report truthfully what you know. Do not dress in splendor to boast before the victorious lord in the jeweled royal hall. When you crouch in attendance, do not bow too low, do not lift your head arrogantly, and do not let your eyes wander left and right. Do not disobey and climb to sit leaning on the royal throne. As for the women of the inner palace, do not bind your heart to desire or become infatuated with them. Be loyal beneath his lotus feet. Do not grow proud because he shows mercy. Do not reveal secrets to visiting envoys, and do not grow intimate with them in greetings and friendship. When rewards are given, divide them among the soldiers. Do not hold them back out of partiality. If he is angry and punishes anyone, do not stir the matter up or urge destruction. Do not be greedy and steal royal goods and treasure. Whatever he commands, remember it. Serve your own lord until your body dies; only then are you counted as a brave man of the battlefield. Remember my words and act by them, and you will prosper in good fortune." When he had finished teaching and instructing his brother, the radiant monkey's voice, strength, and power came to an end. He let the arrow pierce his body and died, then was born in a heavenly mansion.

Then Sukhrip, son of the bright Sun, saw his elder brother dead, his life gone. Filled with pity, he embraced his feet and wept.

"Alas, lord who upheld the world, whose fame spread so that the earth trembled. You loved your younger brother and never let him suffer offense. The king cared for me and raised me. Your goodness was like that of the father who gave birth to my head and hair. I suffered hardship and pain, wandering in the forest wilds, until I came to rule Khitkhin city and at last had joy and happiness as lord of the monkey host, your power spreading through the three worlds. Now you have lost truth because of Dara, pitiful young jewel; you had to meet the arrow of the Avatara because of the oath you made before. All the force of your divine lineage is lost; you lost dharma over a woman, when it should not have been so." He lamented, sighed, drew deep breaths, sobbed, and wept until he was almost senseless.

Then the radiant monkey soldiers learned that Phraya Pali had fought his younger brother and that a human had come to help the viceroy, destroying his life and body. The whole city was frightened and noisy. The hosts broke and fled into the forest.

Then the senior monkey ministers heard the event. Alarmed and frightened, they hurried to attend the queen.

When they arrived, they bowed at her lotus feet and reported to the chief queen: "Now the royal husband has fought his younger brother in the sky. A human came to help the viceroy, and the king's life was ended by the light of an arrow. He is rolling on the bare ground, lying piteously like an ordinary creature."

Then Lady Dara, beloved young jewel, heard the news. It burned her like the fire at the end of an age. The lady nearly lost her senses, as if King Death himself had come to strike off the hair of her head. Sorrow upon sorrow multiplied beyond measure. She beat her breast and began to lament.

She called Angkhot, lord of monkeys, the nephew of Indra and mighty in rank, whom she had fostered and raised, together with monkey-lord Chomphuphan. The three came down from the shining jeweled palace, bright with radiance, and the young lady departed with her attendants and retinue.

When she arrived, she ran in and embraced the feet of her radiant royal husband. Tears washed the queen's face, and she grieved and cried: "Alas, lord of the divine line, whose power made sky and earth tremble. When first you went out to win the fight, I tried to restrain you. You did not listen to your servant's words, for you trusted in your own heroic strength. You insisted on going out to oppose and fight, and now the lord of heaven has lost his life. You lie here looking unworthy, not befitting the rank of the solar and Kosiy line. You have left me alone, and I will have only tears for food. Chomphuphan and Angkhot are filled with grief. Alas, royal father. You cared for and raised both children, never letting their spirits be offended even by a thread. They had no chance to repay your compassion and mercy. You have gone to heaven, and their hearts are desolate beyond measure." The women of the inner palace all wailed in loud grief, rolling and crawling senseless around the body of the monkey king.

Then Phraya Sukhrip, skilled in war, when his grief and distress had eased, spoke graciously: "Look, Angkhot and Chomphuphan, my two beloved nephews. Since your royal father has laid down his life, dear nephews, do not be wounded in heart. I will tell you the old story from before. The king did not keep his truth. The lord of the three worlds gave Lady Dara as reward to your uncle, who had strained himself pulling mighty Mount Meru. When the king accepted her, he offered an oath: if he did not give her to his younger brother, may Phra Narai's arrow kill him. This fault is vast beyond measure, from ancient former days. If you do not believe what I say, ask heavenly Lady Dara. Now the lord who rides Garuda has incarnated. His name is Phra Ram of the solar line, and he will go destroy the race of yakshas. Your father therefore had his life destroyed by the arrow, according to Pali's own vow. Listen to your uncle, dear nephews. Do not grieve too heavily, radiant monkeys. I will take you to attend Phra Chakri, so he may be your refuge from now on."

Then the two monkeys, noble in mind, heard and understood clearly, without doubt. They bowed and answered the command: "Your Majesty is like the father who gave birth to our heads and hair. We will do nothing to offend your feet. We are under our uncle's mercy."

Then the radiant son of the Sun heard them and was filled with gladness. He led the two monkeys onward.

When they arrived, he bowed down at the feet of the three-world lord, bearer of the bow, and said: "These two royal monkeys are named Angkhot and Chomphuphan. They are Pali's own son and fostered son. Both monkeys are my nephews. I offer them beneath Your Majesty's lotus feet. May the lord of heaven show mercy."

Then Phra Kritsanurak, lord of protection, heard him and looked at the faces of the two monkeys. Their bearing and manners were brave, like sons of royal lions. Angkhot resembled his father, and the king was pleased. Then he gave a royal command to the radiant son of the Sun: "Your elder brother has died. It is not fitting to leave him long. I think to help perform his funeral according to the custom of great kings and ancient rite. What does this seem to you?"

Then Sukhrip, noble in mind, bent his head, bowed at the feet, and said: "Let it be as the king in his mercy commands."

Then the jeweled discus-lord took up the mighty Chanthawathit arrow and shot it with power.

The sound thundered and rolled through the air, shaking as far as Dusita. A radiant jeweled Meru rose into being, beautiful as a mansion of Dusita.

Then Phraya Sukhrip, radiant monkey, Chomphuphan, and mighty Angkhot bowed their heads and joined their palms to the four-handed lord. They lifted the body into a jeweled urn, bright and shining, invited it into the excellent Meru, and when this was finished the monkeys came out.

Then the lord of the three worlds took up the mighty Agniwat arrow and shot it.

It blazed like the sun's orb. The earth shook and trembled. It became a flame of fire and caught in the funeral pyre.

Then the son of the Sun, skilled in war, together with lovely Lady Dara and the monkeys Angkhot and Chomphuphan, all held incense, candles, flowers, sweet sandalwood and aloeswood. With the countless women and attendants, they entered the radiant divine Meru.

They bowed their heads in reverence before the body of the radiant monkey king. When this was finished, they lit the fire, each grieving and lamenting.

Then the jeweled discus-lord, radiant creator, saw the fire flare up bright without smoke and reduce the body to dust. He took up the Phlai Wat arrow, powerful enough to shake the earth, and shot it with thunder across the heavenly sky by Phra Chakri's mighty power.

It became rain falling down to quench the fire that had cremated the radiant monkey. Then it blew away the charcoal, ashes, and dust into the river in the blink of an eye.

Then the powerful son of the Sun, when his elder brother's funeral was complete, rejoiced and bowed his head in homage. He said: "I have taken refuge at the feet of the creating lord of the three worlds. Without him I would have lost my life. His goodness is higher than heaven and earth. I offer the royal city, all the monkey hosts and brave warriors, the countless women, and the great treasures beneath the lotus feet of the four-handed lord. Please enter and set foot in the victorious city, so the troops may rejoice and the place become blessed and firm. May the king show mercy."

Then Phra Kritsanurak heard the son of the Sun, and the king was delighted and glad. He said to Phra Lak: "We will enter the radiant city." Having spoken, he departed from beneath the banyan shade.

Sukhrip, Angkhot, Chomphuphan, the women, and the retinues great and small all followed the king in brilliant array, like stars surrounding the moon in the sky, clear and radiant with light. Beautiful in glory, the king went forward with them.

Then Sukhrip, son of the bright Sun, led the two princes onward until they reached the gate of the city precinct. He raised his hands, bowed at the feet of the radiant king, and said: "Please enter and proceed into delightful Khitkhin city."

Then the royal lord, crown of the world, walked and looked about, admiring the city of Phraya Pali. Its walls were beautiful like the Sattaphan mountains. Its moats and jeweled embankments alternated in color. Rows of beautiful structures circled the city, and golden dragon banners stood upon the battlements. He looked at the lovely, towering gateways; he looked at doors unequaled on any continent; he looked at fine forts with guns in their emplacements; in every interval there were splendid parasols set in rows. He looked at beautiful streets paved in stone and at palaces excellent and bright. He looked at delicate gables as if smiling, at roof-forms like Garuda in flight. He looked at the four porches, all of them beautiful, adorned entirely with pearls and gems. It was delightful as the city of Indra, and the bow-bearing lord gazed without turning his eyes away.

Then the powerful son of the Sun led Phra Harirak Chakri to the moon-palace residence. He bent his head and said with loyal heart: "Please let the discus-bearing lord ascend the shining jeweled palace, Pali's residence."

Then the radiant Narai of the solar line and his younger brother, his life-companion, ascended the magnificent jeweled palace.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled couch, bright with pearl-gems, lovely in form like Makhawan dwelling in the Vejayanta mansion. Pali's women, the monkey ministers of many ranks, and the attendants crouched densely in homage before him like stars around the moon. He gave treasures, garments, the countless women and attendants on left and right, to mighty Sukhrip, Pali's younger brother. Lovely Lady Dara he made chief queen, to rule the people and subjects of the great city of Khitkhin.

Sukhrip Is Crowned in Khitkhin

Then Sukhrip, wise and brave, became lord of the city on earth, great and excellent in power. He rejoiced because his thought had been fulfilled, and there was no comparison for the delight in his heart. The monkey lord considered the goodness of the four-handed king. He bowed his head and reported to the royal lord of the solar line, bearer of the bow: "The monkey armies have scattered and fled into the forest. May the lord show mercy to your servant beneath your glorious feet. Remain for seven nights in delightful Khitkhin city. Your servant will muster the armies, making all the brave troops of left and right ready, and then march to subdue the asuras on the continent of Lanka, the demon city."

Then Phra Chakrakrit, famed in power through all directions, heard Phraya Sukhrip set out his plan and answered by command: "It is not fitting for me to wait and remain in the city. Is there any pleasant strategic ground, neither near nor far from the city? I will go stop and rest there, staying in place to wait for the radiant monkeys. You must hasten to muster the soldiers within seven nights, so they are ready together."

Then the son of the Sun heard the righteous lord's command, bowed, and answered: "There is one mountain named Khanthamat. Its trees are all fragrant across the whole mountain. Its dwelling-place is clean and pleasing to the eye, a great and lasting field of victory. Please go stay there first and make Your Majesty's heart glad. Then I will raise the army and follow Phra Chakri's path."

Then Phra Hariwong, radiant in auspicious light, heard and was glad. He invited his glorious younger brother, and they departed from the splendid palace like the shining sun moving through the sky. The two lords walked gracefully out from the monkey city.

They traveled among the mountains, turning and winding along the slopes, crossing streams, ravines, cliffs, and forest. The king glanced aside and saw a golden peacock walking along the ridge of the great mountain. Its wings and tail were beautifully fashioned, bright, glittering, and flashing with patterned light. It called in a sweet, flowing voice and danced as was its nature. He pointed it out to his glorious younger brother: "Look at that beautiful peacock. Its form is graceful like a royal swan; its shape and bodily color shine together." Speaking in admiration, they hurried on their way together through the forest.

Then the royal peacock saw Phra Lak and Phra Chakri, the brothers, coming through the forest. It cried out and reported the news: "Beautiful Queen Sida, beloved lady, has been stolen by the ten-faced one and taken to the city of Lanka. She commanded that Your Majesty follow her and wage war with the yakshas. She will guard her body and life, waiting for Phra Chakri."

Then the radiant Narai of the solar line heard the royal bird speak and give news of the young lady. The discus-bearing lord was filled with sorrow and longing for the lovely woman, and his brave younger brother also seemed as if his life would end. Tears flowed and filled their eyes. Both, grieved and wounded with separation, spoke of their sorrow as they traveled through the Himava forest.

Then a group of wild monkeys saw the two princes come with sorrowful, longing faces. Each was amazed. When the two lords came near, they lifted a cloth and sash, held it up, and spoke graciously: "This cloth was entrusted by the lady for the bow-bearing Narai of the solar line. She asks Your Majesty to hurry after her, fight, and cut off the heads and arms of Thotsakan. She will keep her life and wait. If you are slow, she will die. Now the kumbhanda asura has gone toward the southwest."

Then the radiant Avatara received the queen's sash and pressed it against his chest. The fragrance of the young lady's body was sweet and filled his nose. His longing for the beautiful woman grew stronger. Tears gathered in his eyes, and he sighed: "Alas, my life's jewel, faithful and true beyond finding. When first I was to leave the victorious city, no matter how many tried to stop you, you paid no heed. Grateful and loyal, you endured hardship as my companion. You suffered such difficulty with me in the forest. The three of us, with Phra Lak, shared one life. Is it fitting, dear lady, that we should be parted? By now you will be shedding tears, filled with grief, separation, and sorrow. My power and thought are exhausted; how can I catch up with you? As I follow the young lady, who will carry news to her? O my heart, what shall I do?" The king's body sank down in grief.

Then radiant Thao Tri Net sat upon his bright divine seat in the great Vejayanta palace, surrounded by hosts of attendant gods and heavenly apsaras. His heart grew troubled as if by the fire of the age, and his lasting happiness faded. He looked with divine sight and saw the bow-bearing royal lord and mighty Phra Lak walking in pursuit of Lady Sida. Now they would go stay on Khanthamat mountain, gather monkey armies, and subdue the base asuras.

He rejoiced because his wish had been fulfilled. Then he gave command to wise and powerful Vishnukam: "Take crowns, royal garments, divine necklaces, and shining rings, and offer them to Phra Lak and Phra Chakri on Khanthamat mountain. Then create a victory pavilion, bright with jeweled adornment, so the two lords may lay aside ascetic practice and dwell there to assemble the ten armies."

Then bold Phra Vishnukam heard the divine king's command, and his heart was firm in gladness. He received the divine ornaments, garments, and shining jeweled crowns, bowed with joined hands in happy reverence, displayed his power, and flew through the air.

When he reached Khanthamat mountain, the divine craftsman looked in every direction. Then he created a golden pavilion in that great auspicious field of victory.

When this was finished, he inscribed letters, placed the radiant ornaments in the jeweled chamber, and returned to his heavenly mansion.

Then Phra Chakri, wise and brave, and his mighty younger brother, lord of heaven, had begun to ease their grief. The two princes traveled together, lovely and bold as royal lions, following the forest road and crossing mountains, streams, and passes.

When the sun's light leaned into evening, they reached Khanthamat mountain. The mountain was vast and clean to the eye, splendid and entirely made of the nine kinds of gems.

The lords roamed and admired clusters and jeweled blooms, shining and flashing like pearls: cat's-eye gems bright as necklaces, coral and emerald mingled together, red diamond light glittering on dark sapphire, and patterned komin gems shining together. Rubies, golden stones, and layered channels opened beautifully to the eye. The trees were all fragrant species, and scent spread over the mountain's peak. Swarms of bees hovered among the flowers, and Phra Phai carried streams of perfume. Springs burst from within the stone and flowed aloud down into the watercourse, like Nandavana in Indra's heaven. The lord thought of his beloved: "If she had come with me, she would enjoy this, delighting happily in fellowship among the lovely masses of flowers. I would beg her to pick golden blossoms. Alas, who will be your companion, my young beloved, my pitiful jewel?" Lamenting and admiring the flowers, the lord went on.

He looked aside and saw the golden pavilion below the cliff overhang in the shade of a great rang tree. It was adorned with glittering gems, and he went inside at once.

When he arrived, he saw the throne-seat, bright and radiant with shining color, and the royal ornaments and garments in the jeweled chamber. He looked closely and saw written letters on the shutters. The king read the message.

The writing said: "Amarin, crown of the Tavatimsa realm, has learned that Narai has come to destroy unrighteous enemies. In this Treta age the world will gain joy and peace. Therefore he has sent Phra Vishnukam to create a golden pavilion and divine ornaments and garments for Phra Chakrakrit, so that Your Majesty may leave the ascetic way and gather monkey armies in this auspicious field on Khanthamat mountain. When this is finished, raise the army and go fight the hostile base enemies."

When he finished reading the written message, he knew clearly that it was from Thao Kosiy. Pleased because it matched his wish, the mighty lord told his younger brother: "This golden pavilion was created by the lord of Vejayanta for the two of us to dwell in while gathering armies. Now our bodies are greatly wearied, and our faces tired from walking without rest. Come, let us go bathe in the water." Having spoken, he moved his hand and went.

The two princes went down to bathe in the stream at the bathing place beside the radiant mountain slope. The water was spotless, clear, and clean, like cat's-eye gem in the lordly ocean. There were five kinds of lotuses, with pods and stalks mingled and blossoms opened brightly. Some were still buds, raised above the leaves; some waited to open for the rising sun. Phra Lak picked a fresh, opened lotus with loosened filaments and offered it to powerful Phra Narai, fragrant with pollen and sweet scent. Fish grazed on moss and swam thickly. Some spouted water close beside their mates. Some floated and played through the stream, coming in schools through the water. The pollen of golden lotuses had fallen everywhere, spreading sweet fragrance. It was delightful like the pool of Nandana, and the two rejoiced, bathing their bodies in pleasure.

When their washing and bathing were finished, the two radiant princes of the solar line came up from the stream and returned to the golden pavilion.

Each lord removed his ascetic garments, left the vow and the forest-sage appearance, and put on royal dress adorned with divine ornaments.

When the sun set and sank behind the mountain edge, the light of the noble sun was gone, and the moon moved among the clouds.

The four-handed lord reclined upon the jeweled couch, grieving in sorrow. A gentle wind blew, carrying the scent of the beloved lady's cloth. His pain and grief increased as he thought of the chief queen, his heart's beloved. Tears filled the king's eyes, and sorrow multiplied. "Alas, Sida, my dear one, cherished lady. By now you must grieve endlessly because of me. All the strength of this incarnation was to destroy the deluded demon host. Is it fitting that I should lose by a demon's trick and lose my very life? I think and think of killing myself, but I still regret not yet having avenged her." Lamenting and sobbing in longing, the king did not sleep.

Then Phra Lak, younger lord of the solar line, saw his exalted elder brother grieving and almost senseless. He bowed his head and said: "Radiant royal lord, may Your Majesty show mercy to yourself. Do not grieve in sorrow and lamentation. Your elder queen Sida is heavenly Phra Lakshmi, mother among the divine apsaras, bright as a jewel. Even if a jewel falls onto the earth, it has no stain. Though the asura has carried her away, surely she will return. All this has happened because the base ones will lose their lives and the yaksha race will be ended. Let Your Majesty extinguish sorrow and consider how to go fight."

Then Narai of the solar line, bearer of the bow, heard his beloved brother plead with him, and the king regained his senses. He spoke sweetly to his radiant younger brother: "You who share hardship and life with me, everything you have said is right. It is not that I do not think this myself, but pity overwhelms my heart. One lone woman has fallen into the hands of demons; she will be bruised and troubled at every moment. When she turns her face, she will see no one as companion in her suffering. My longing grows beyond all measure; therefore I grieve and lament. Now I must gather the monkeys and wait for the son of the Sun. He fixed the term at seven days, and that companion still has not come. Dear brother, do not think of your weariness or the hardship to your body. Go to Khitkhin city and find Phraya Sukhrip at once."

Then radiant Phra Lak of the solar line bowed his head, received the command gladly, raised his joined hands, and took leave of the glorious lord.

He hurried along the road, beautiful as the moon in its halo, crossing streams and mountain slopes along the appointed path.

When he reached victorious Khitkhin at the time of strong sunrise, he entered the gate and came before the radiant royal court.

Then Phraya Sukhrip, radiant monkey, was seated upon the jeweled throne in the assembly of monkeys. He saw the younger brother of glorious Phra Hariwong, who had left ascetic dress and wore bright ornaments, splendid as the moon. He went to receive him with gladness.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet, prostrating on left and right, and invited the royal younger brother to ascend the shining jeweled throne.

Then Phra Lak, noble in mind, ascended the glittering jeweled seat in the midst of the monkey host. He gave a gracious command: "Look, lord of Khitkhin. You have come to rule the land, but you have forgotten your word, lord of monkeys. Why have you not led your army to offer it to Lord Narai? In anger, he has graciously sent me to find you and bring you out now."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, radiant monkey, heard the younger brother of Phra Chakri and was frightened and alarmed. He said: "I, your servant beneath the feet, would never slight his goodness. But the great army has fled in terror to every district. Mustering them to meet the command in time is difficult. As for our troops, they have fled into the wild caves and mountains. They will not be mustered in time, and the king may be displeased in spirit. สังหารพาลีฤทธิรอน / ภูธรสุดสิ้นชีวัน
ตรัสสั่งให้เกณฑ์โยธา / แสนสุรเสนาทัพขันธ์
