This is the thirty-second สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Kaeo Udon's grief and astrological inquiry after Maha Chomphu's disappearance, Nilaphat's reconnaissance and submission to Rama, the mustering of the Chomphu and Khitkhin armies, Prakhonthan's arrival and enlistment, Rama's longing for Sida, and the dispatch of Hanuman, Angkhot, and Chomphuphan toward Lanka with Rama's tokens and secret sign.

Translation

Kaeo Udon Sends Nilaphat

Then Lady Kaeo Udon, beloved lady, heard the news, and heat filled her breast. The noble woman hurried on her way.

When she reached the golden sleeping chamber, bright and shining with radiance, she did not see the king. The beautiful lady struck her breast and fell into grief.

"Alas, crown-lord, whose power once protected the hair of my head. You have vanished together with the jeweled couch. This wife sees something strange and wrong. Before, whenever you went anywhere, you always went by the power of a lordly chakra, with fourfold troops and guards protecting your feet. This time you have gone alone, looking lonely as if desolate." As she lamented, the lady looked around and saw that the top of the great victorious palace had been broken down through the ceiling. Then the young lady understood. "Surely the envoys were daring in heart and cast a spell by magical knowledge. Then they carried the king through the paths of the sky. No one else, no stranger, could have slipped down through the heavenly palace. Alas, powerful lord, this wife cannot think how to follow and find you." Lamenting in deep grief, the noble woman fainted and fell.

Then the elder women and attendants, great and small, saw her faint and were alarmed. They cried out together in loud confusion. Some pressed and some massaged her in turmoil. The mistress called for physicians with trembling voice. Some ground aloeswood and sandalwood and together sprinkled and anointed her.

Then beloved Lady Kaeo Udon regained her senses. The noble woman ordered the eunuchs: "Go out quickly. Find the four great astrologers, rear astrologers and front astrologers, all of them, and bring them into the royal hall."

Then the diligent eunuchs received the order and bowed in homage. They all ran out in confusion.

They cried aloud in noisy chorus: "Where are the chief astrologers? The lovely lady commands that they be found and brought to attend at her feet."

Then all the monkey astrologers were sitting in a circle smoking cannabis. Hearing the summons, they were alarmed. Each snatched for his books, too flustered to take the right thing. Some grabbed a board and ran with it to attend the lovely queen.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet of the beautiful chief queen and waited for the royal command in the ornate royal hall.

Then beloved Lady Kaeo Udon, when she saw the old astrologers come in, spoke: "Now the crown of the city, crowned summit of the royal realm, has vanished together with his shining couch. What has happened to the king?"

Then the senior astrologer bowed his head and received the lovely lady's command. He counted and seized the hour according to time, compared the wandering planets, calculated, and cast the king's nativity. Mars had retreated and come down to press the ascendant in Pisces. Saturn and Rahu stood in the twelfth, striking the ascendant and moon entirely. He reported: "The monkey king will be separated from the land of his victorious city. He will be startled briefly, and then the matter will pass. It will not be so bad as to reach the king's life. In three days the royal lord will return to the city."

Then Lady Kaeo Udon, chief queen, heard the chief astrologer, and her grief eased a little. She ordered the palace women: "Go together quickly and find mighty Nilaphat. Bring him up so we may plan what to do."

Then the beloved palace attendants received the lady's command, bowed at her lotus feet, and hurried away.

When they reached powerful Nilaphat, they raised their hands in homage and reported: "The chief queen commands that you come at once."

Then the victorious son of Phra Kan learned the royal command, and the monkey lord went up to attend the young lady.

He bowed his head at the feet of the chief queen, jewel of pity, in the midst of the women and attendants, waiting to hear the noble woman's word.

Then beloved Lady Kaeo Udon, when she saw Nilaphat come up, grieved and told the matter from the beginning: "Yesterday two monkeys came carrying a written royal letter. They said that the son of King Thotsarot, named blessed Phra Rama, is Narai incarnate, come to subdue the base yakshas. He will gather armies and march to Lanka city, and he summoned this king to attend him at radiant Khanthamat mountain. The king did not believe their words. Those two monkeys were bold and proud in heart. They secretly cast a sleeping spell and carried the lord away. What torment or bonds will they inflict, or will they kill him and end his life? You, who possess power and might, hurry and follow, searching for him at Khanthamat mountain. Learn clearly whether the matter is good or bad."

Then radiant Nilaphat heard the chief queen, sobbed in grief, and reported: "Your servant is counted as a man. I will not be sorry to lose my life. They acted boldly and proudly. I will follow them and not let go. If I overtake them, I will fight and kill the two monkeys." Having spoken, he bowed in homage, brandished his sword, and flew up into the sky.

He floated swiftly through the air and reached Khanthamat mountain. He came down to the earth and walked along the road.

He saw the golden pavilion beneath the shade of tall trees. He slipped in and hid in a thicket. Looking out, he saw King Chomphu with the two letter-bearing envoys, crouching humbly before a human. "I must secretly go in and ask, so I may know whether the matter is good or bad." Having thought this, he bowed with joined hands to radiant Phra Sayamphu, closed his eyes, composed his senses, and recited magical Veda.

At once he changed into a golden fly, bright-bodied like a figure in a picture. He flew darting and hovering in and landed on King Chomphu's shoulder.

Then he spoke and reported, whispering softly at his ear: "Why do you sit here with enemies? This does not seem fitting, king. Have you, the mighty lord, raised joined hands to them? Why do you not fight and win? I am aggrieved beyond measure. Please, crown-lord, return to your residence instead. Why remain with these two envoys? If I had followed them, I would have killed them and ended their lives."

Then brave-hearted Thao Maha Chomphu heard and forbade the son of Phra Kan: "Beloved nephew, do not speak. This one is the conch-bearing lord who dwells in the radiant Milk Ocean. He has incarnated to destroy the asuras and is named blessed Phra Rama. When I first saw his form, I fainted and nearly lost my life. If he had not shown mercy, I would not have escaped with my life."

Then strong and mighty Nilaphat understood that the lord who rides Garuda had come to subdue the unrighteous base ones. His doubts and stains ended, and his heart was filled with gladness. But he was angry at Hanuman's arrogance, at his proud power and shameless humiliation of them. "I followed him intending to fight and avenge that act. Since Your Majesty says this, I am at a loss and must stop. What harm is there?" Having thought this, he answered the king's word: "If that is so, please graciously lead me to attend Phra Chakri, so I may serve beneath the dust of his lotus feet."

Then brave-hearted Thao Maha Chomphu heard the son of Phra Kan and answered: "Since you desire loyal service, I will help report and offer you as a soldier and servant beneath Phra Chakri's feet."

Then radiant Phra Lak spoke to the two monkey lords: "The blessed Phra Chakri has commanded you to set the count of the armies of both sides together in line. I will report it to the righteous lord."

Then creating Thao Maha Chomphu and Phraya Sukhrip, fierce in bravery, bowed and reported to the younger brother of the four-handed lord: "The monkey-kings and noble monkeys are all bold, excited, and skilled in war. In the city of Khitkhin there are fifty oceans of monkeys. On the Chomphu city side, twenty-seven oceans of monkey soldiers can be mustered, mighty, quick, and expert in battle. Joined together, the two cities make seventy-seven oceans, all wise and excellent in fierce strength, with the eighteen crowned commanders of power. And there is monkey-lord Nilaphat, my nephew and life-companion. Now this companion has followed me here; I ask to offer him as servant of Phra Chakri."

Then radiant Phra Lak heard Thao Chomphu and spoke: "Look, wise monkey. I am unsure about what you have said. Where is this nephew of yours who followed you? Go call him here."

Then Lord Maha Chomphu heard the royal command and bowed at the feet at once. He called Nilaphat: "Look, radiant nephew. Come bow your head in happy reverence to the mighty younger brother of Phra Chakri."

Then the son of Phra Kan, skilled in war, heard the king's command, flew down, and alighted on the earth.

His form changed back into a monkey. He crouched in place before the platform, raised his hands, and bowed at the lotus feet of the mighty younger brother of the Avatara.

Then Phra Lak, younger lord of the solar line, when he saw Nilaphat, was glad as if he had gained the sixteen heavens. He looked carefully over the whole body: every hair gleamed black. Then he led the four famous monkeys up to attend at once.

When they arrived, he bowed his head in homage to the radiant lord of the three worlds and reported: "The army-counts of the two cities have been made. Chomphu has twenty-seven oceans, all mighty and skilled in war. Khitkhin city has fifty oceans of monkeys. The total set is seventy-seven oceans, together with the eighteen great commanders and the mighty nephew of King Chomphu, whose name is victorious Nilaphat."

Then wise Phra Chakri looked and saw the son of Phra Kan. The king was pleased and glad. He gave a gracious command: "Look, radiant Chomphu. We will raise the armies to subdue the asuras in Lanka. You are very old. Stay and guard Chomphu and Khitkhin cities, so no harmful event occurs. Muster only the monkey troops and entrust them to Nilaphat your nephew as commander of the armies. Let him raise the soldiers and join Sukhrip. As for Phraya Sukhrip, hurry back and arrange your mighty brave troops. Within seven days, bring the armies of both cities here together."

Then Sukhrip, son of the bright Sun, Thao Maha Chomphu, and powerful Nilaphat each bowed at the lotus feet and took leave of supreme Phra Chakrakrit. They left the shining pavilion, displayed their power, and flew to their cities.

When he reached Khitkhin city, the radiant son of the Sun ascended the bright jeweled throne in the jeweled royal hall. He ordered the monkey ministers to muster brave monkeys, fifty oceans by the tally, those with powerful strength and speed, fully equipped with weapons for great war, to serve victorious Phra Narai, ready in three nights.

Then the great monkey ministers received the command of the lord of earth, raised joined hands in homage, and went out.

They appointed commanders to lead soldiers: Surasen, Surakan, Usuphasorn, Rampinkhala, Malun, Wahulom, all skilled in war, seven lords commanding thirty oceans of monkey troops; Keyun, Rotkhan, Khomut, Vaiyabut, and Mahatwikan commanding ten oceans, all mighty and firm; Thaviphat, Makan, and Chawik taking command of ten oceans of monkeys, powerful and bold, fierce and expert in battle. All held weapons in hand, arrayed in layered order for the march.

Then mighty and strong Sukhrip, when dawn brightened the time, bathed in the Ganga water and put on royal dress of the solar line, splendid as a royal lion. He took the bright jeweled sword and came to the assembly of troops.

He ordered the armies to march. The monkeys shouted in tumult, dust darkened the sky, and they drove out from the city.

When they reached the meeting road, he halted the troops of left and right. He waited at the forest edge for Nilaphat's army to come.

Then radiant Thao Chomphu, when he reached his royal city, the monkey lord came out to the victorious royal hall.

He gave royal command to the senior military ministers: "Quickly arrange all the troops and soldiers, fully equipped with weapons. Let there be twenty-seven oceans, all fierce, powerful, and brave. I will have Nilaphat, my nephew, raise them to serve the four-handed lord."

Then the great ministers, skilled in war, bowed their heads, received the king's command, and went out from the royal hall.

They set Nilek and Nilanon to command ten mighty oceans of troops; Khun Nil and Nilpanan, two wise lords, to command seven oceans of monkeys, all fierce and brave; and mighty Nilrat and Nilakhan to command five oceans of monkeys. Wisan, Trawi, Khunnon, and Chotimuk, three chief lords, were given command over five oceans of troops, fierce-hearted and excited. All brandished weapons, displaying battle-power and pride in war, bold, fierce, and deep in skill, crowded and packed together.

Then creating Thao Maha Chomphu ordered fierce Nilaphat: "Beloved nephew, who shares my heart, raise the armies, the monkey ministers great and small. Join the army of victorious Khitkhin city and go serve Phra Chakri. Angkhot, Hanuman, and radiant Chomphuphan are each excellent in himself. You too have power. To be servant at Phra Hariwong's feet, fight without shame before them. Only then will you be counted a man of power and make your glory known across the three realms."

Then noble Nilaphat heard the king's command and was glad as if he had gained the sixteen heavens. He bent his head in reverent homage, bowed down at the lotus feet, took leave of the two mighty kings, and went to bathe in the water.

When this was finished, he adorned his body and put on dress, bright, shining, and radiant. He took his fierce jeweled sword and came to the army host.

At the auspicious time he ordered the soldiers to march. Shouts shook every direction, gongs and drums roared in tumult, and they set out from the city.

When they reached Mount Kaeo Inthanin, the meeting-road of radiant Khitkhin city, they saw Sukhrip's army and were glad. He ordered the troops to halt and join together.

Then the creating son of the Sun, when Chomphu's army had arrived, commanded the armies to march.

The troops of both cities streamed forward without pause: seventy-seven oceans of monkeys, each displaying battle-power. Some walked on water, some moved underground, some flew and leapt; earth and water shook and shifted. Dust darkened the sky like smoke, and their shouts thundered and rolled. Officers and soldiers all had battle-might, each proud and excited for war. Trumpets, conches, gongs, and drums boomed in ceremonial tumult. The road was about a yojana wide, and the troops were packed in confusion. Striped banners and spread banners waved above them; victory banners led the army's march. As for trees that were not intoxicating, the monkeys gathered them for food. Some snatched and fought over them in uproar, the noise shaking the whole forest. They tore vines, roots, stumps, and bark, choosing and eating fruits, flowers, and tender leaves. The two cities hurried the armies onward, traveling through the forest in heat and hardship.

When they came near Khanthamat mountain, he ordered the army hosts to halt. Sukhrip, son of the Sun, mighty Nilaphat, and the eighteen crowned commanders, all fierce and brave, left the army-camp and went to fierce Hanuman.

Then brave and mighty Vayu's son saw Phraya Sukhrip, Chomphuphan, the son of Phra Kan, powerful Angkhot, and the eighteen crowned great soldiers. His heart was filled with gladness and fellowship. He led the monkey kings and lords onward to attend Phra Chakri.

Each bowed his head in homage and prostrated at the glorious feet. Sukhrip reported the offered armies according to the account of the forces he had raised.

Then the lord of the three worlds saw the kings and commanders of both cities come together. His heart rejoiced as if he had gained the wealth of heaven. He commanded the son of the Sun to arrange the army hosts in a battle formation shaped as the royal Garuda bird, by great auspicious blessing, on the lasting field of victory.

Then Phraya Sukhrip, skilled in war, bowed his head to receive the four-handed lord's command, and they all went out.

They set the Garuda battle formation: troops counted by oceans became the feet, mouth, wings, tail, eyes, neck, head, and body of the bird. Talons and feathers were packed and layered in noisy density. Reinforcement and assault companies were made from excellent troops, with forest tigers and scouting cats. Three-spear and seven-spear patrols were appointed to inspect the filled passages. Hundred-companies waited for events at their posts, arranged in units around the pavilion. They sat watch by the fires under strict discipline, taking turns guarding day and night according to the order of the four-handed lord.

Prakhonthan Joins the Army

Now the story will speak of Prakhonthan, skilled in war. He lived at the foot of Mount Yukhonthon, bold and proud in power. Gods, danavas, and siddhas feared his strength and did not oppose his force. He could walk on water, pass through the earth, and fly swiftly through the sky. At the sound of his name, all places feared his power. He could transform his body and vanish. He thought and considered that he wished to roam through the forest. Having thought this, he adorned his body and put on dress, shining in radiant beauty, took his bright jeweled sword, turned, and flew off by power.

Drifting through the middle of the air, he came to radiant Khanthamat mountain. Looking down onto the earth, he saw monkey troops and soldiers set around the golden pavilion, going in and out in confusion. Flutes, drums, and gongs resounded loudly, and he was puzzled and doubtful. "I will go ask and learn what this matter is." Having thought this, he went straight down to the earth.

He hid at the forest edge and saw the radiant monkey soldiers roaming along the mountain slopes, all with weapons complete in their hands. Each bore authority and power, bold as a royal lion. His heart was filled with gladness, and he walked out from the forest thicket.

Then the strong monkey soldiers glanced and saw the gandharva. They ran together in a noisy crowd.

Some surrounded him before and behind, dense and loud. Mighty Nilakhan spoke and asked: "Are you a human or a serpent? Where are you going, roaming through the forest? What is your name, that you are bold enough to intrude here?"

Then strong and mighty Prakhonthan heard and answered: "Look, Phraya monkey. As for me, my name is Prakhonthan, skilled in war. I came roaming in the forest for pleasure. I saw these armies and troops, and because I wished to understand the matter, I stopped to ask the radiant monkeys. What is the name of the crowned lord?"

Then Nilakhan, their chief commander, heard and answered: "Have you not known from before? The lord of the army-host is Lord Narai. He has incarnated to destroy the asuras and make the world firm. Now he has gathered armies, skilled monkey forces from the Chomphu and Khitkhin cities, to go fight the kumbhandas."

Then mighty Prakhonthan understood that the lord who rides Garuda would go destroy the unrighteous ones. He rejoiced as if a monkey had brought him a jewel and put it in his hand. He answered: "May you show mercy and help bring me to attend the supreme crown-lord. I will remain beneath his feet and serve blessed Phra Chakri."

Then radiant Nilakhan heard Prakhonthan speak and was glad. They brought him in.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet of Lord Narai and reported: "Mighty Prakhonthan has come to become a servant of the powerful lord. With loyal and sincere heart he will serve in battle and destroy the hostile base enemies until his life ends."

Then wise Phra Chakri heard Nilakhan report the matter, and the king looked out. Seeing Prakhonthan, he was pleased and spoke in greeting: "You, who have great power, have set your heart in loyal service and come to help me subdue distress, making the world happy and prosperous. Your power is not wasted. I thank you, gandharva." Having spoken, he walked gracefully, lovely as a god in heaven, moved his hand, and entered the chamber of the golden pavilion.

Rama Sends Hanuman to Sida

He reclined on the couch, hand across his face, grieving for the chief queen Sida. "My jewel of the eyes, what has become of you? Since you left me to dwell in the demon city, you must suffer terribly, troubled and weeping, growing thin, distressed in spirit and heart, with no one as your companion, dear lady. O my heart, how can I send word to the chief queen, my heart's beloved, that I have gathered armies here on Khanthamat mountain? Alas, by now you must be looking for me, grieving bitterly for me. Not knowing news, your sorrow will multiply, and you will only wail without ceasing." The lord rose and sat, then lay down and rose again, without sleep. Tears filled his face as he wept in grief until golden light shone across the sky and roosters called at dawn.

He bathed his body and put on dress, radiant like the moon. In his hand he held the victorious arrow, and the king came out before the pavilion.

He lowered himself onto the throne-seat, bright and shining against the sky, in the midst of the monkey armies like stars surrounding the moon in heaven. He gave royal command to the brave hosts: "We have gathered armies from both cities together and will quickly march to kill and destroy the deluded asura host. We should not delay days and nights. What do you all think?"

Then Sukhrip and Hanuman, great soldiers, Angkhot nephew of Thao Hatsanai, quick-witted Nilaphat, Chomphuphan, Nilanon, Khomut, and all eighteen crowned commanders bowed their heads to receive the royal command and consulted on the war.

When they had finished, they bowed at the lotus feet and reported to radiant Phra Narai: "The troops of both cities are all powerful, mighty, and fierce. Even if they are marched in to break the yakshas, how could the yakshas withstand their hands? But for the royal army to advance, the road is far and the places are unknown. We fear barren terrain, and food for the soldiers may run short. Thinking before and after, this is a concern; fighting would become many times more difficult. Please halt and stay the army here on radiant Khanthamat mountain. Send monkey ministers to visit beautiful Phra Lakshmi, to learn how good or bad matters are and the road ahead. Afterward, raise the army. We think that will be better and easier."

Then radiant Phra Phitsanurak heard the ministers' counsel, and the king approved in every way. He ordered the son of the Sun to choose monkey warriors who possessed rank, wisdom, and skill, who were quick and expert in speech, bold in battle, and wise in understanding dispositions, to carry his news and bring it to the lovely lady in Lanka.

Then Sukhrip of mighty rank bowed his head and received the command with gladness. The monkey answered the royal order: "All the soldiers of the two cities possess power and brave strength. But as for skill and wisdom in speech, I see only mighty Hanuman, monkey-lord Chomphuphan, and Angkhot, radiant nephew of Indra. These three are all excellent. I see no one else. If they meet yakshas and demons, they can fight, break, or soften matters as needed. I ask that these three lords go attend the lovely lady in the demon city."

Then Phra Narai of the solar line, bearer of the discus, heard and was very glad. He turned his face and commanded Hanuman: "You, famous in battle-power, carry the news and message until it reaches the noble lady. Let her know that I have followed her." As he spoke, he took a ring and the sash of his younger brother and gave them to the powerful son of Phra Phai. Then he spoke graciously: "Take these two things to Sida, my heart's beloved. Tell her that I grieve and long, burning in sorrow for the lovely lady. When you return, whatever I wear on my body I will remove and give to you. You three, mighty lords, go until you reach the noble lady."

Then brave and mighty Vayu's son received the splendid sash and ring, bowed at the lotus feet with gladness, and said: "Your Majesty commands me to go to radiant Lanka and give news to the chief queen. That much can be done according to the command. But offering the royal ring and sash to the younger queen may be difficult. The lady may doubt in spirit and think these things fell in the forest, or that someone among Thotsakan's people went roaming, found them, and picked them up, then falsely arranged a deception to comfort her heart. She may think I am not Phra Chakri's soldier. Your servant sees this as difficult, because the lady does not know the radiant monkey. How can I make the queen end every doubt in her spirit?"

Then the lord of the three worlds, destroyer of worlds, heard the wise son of Phra Phai and answered: "Even if you report the message, the young lady may still doubt and say you are one of the base, harmful ones, not believing your speech. Take the old story from when I lifted the bow in radiant Mithila city: my eyes and the queen's eyes met one another, each gazing in turn, through the palace window. Each of us felt love and trembling. This secret is important. The noble lady will end her distrust." Having spoken, he commanded Phraya Sukhrip, great soldier, to hurry and arrange all the armies to go with the three ministers.

Then the radiant son of the Sun received blessed Phra Chakri's command, bowed his head with joined hands, and went out.

He arranged an army of two oceans, brave and mighty in power, fully equipped with weapons, completed according to the king's command.

Then Angkhot and Hanuman, great soldiers, together with powerful Chomphuphan, all wise, quick, and fierce in heart, each bowed in homage at the feet of creating Phra Narai and at the beautiful younger brother's feet, then went together to the army.

The three lords led the army on the march out from Khanthamat mountain, pushing through the forest wilds and traveling toward the southwest.

After they had gone three yojanas by count, as the sun turned behind the radiant mountain edge, they reached a lotus pool in the middle of the forest. The water was full to the bank, clear and clean. Golden lotuses raised their stems and bloomed brightly. Water plants and water-chestnuts alternated, with leaves and pods, old and young, mingled together.
