Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the thirty-third สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Paklan's attack on the sleeping monkey army and release from her curse, Hanuman's encounter with Butsamali in Mayan city, Suwannamali's guidance at the great water, the hermit's direction toward Hemmatiran mountain, Sampati's grief for Sadayu, the return of Sampati's feathers, his sighting of Lanka, and Hanuman's leap toward the demon city.

Translation

Paklan Is Released

Now the story turns to Paklan, the yaksha woman, cursed by mighty Hatsanai. The asura had guarded the pool for a long time. Whenever living creatures entered that place, the giant seized and ate them as food. At midnight the demon lord rose up from the water.

She roamed the edge of the splendid pool and found the monkey troops, great and small, lying scattered everywhere, sleeping deeply and not stirring their bodies. Her heart was glad and delighted. She clapped her hands and laughed aloud: "Today great fortune has come to me. I will eat them as food and be satisfied." Having thought this, she brandished her mace and showed her fierce power and strength. She crept in with a cruel heart to the middle of the army.

She saw three monkeys in the center of the splendid monkey host. One was dark green over all his body. "It seems this one must be their chief. I will kill and destroy him, ending his life and body." Having thought this, she sprang and kicked the chest of Angkhot, the grandson of Makhawan.

Then the brave son of King Pali started awake from the earth. He saw the demon lord, bold in heart. Angry as burning fire, he showed power until the earth shook, drew his sword swiftly, and rushed in to pursue and kill the asura.

Then Paklan, powerful yaksha woman, lunged, struck, pierced, and beat with giant strength. Each drew back and each pressed in confusion. Each one's power was strong and firm. The two brave ones met in battle, striking and cutting without lowering their hands.

Then the battle-wise grandson of Makhawan brandished his powerful sword. The monkey stepped on the demon's knee. They grappled, rolled, and held each other in confusion. Each endured and neither fled. Angkhot kicked Paklan several times, and the yaksha staggered back beneath his power.

Then Paklan the yaksha was at the end of thought and bodily strength, with no power left to fight. Fear shook her body; her spirit fled as if life would end. She raised joined hands and spoke: "What is your name? You have brought troops across into my territory at the great pool. To what place are you going? My doubt is beyond measure."

Then the fierce son of King Pali heard her and answered the asura: "My name is Angkhot. I am a soldier of blessed Phra Chakrakrit, whose power is sharp as a discus. Now the glorious lord is raising ten armies of monkeys to go subdue the asuras and demons, ending the unrighteous ones by his arrows. He has sent us three powerful chiefs to Lanka city. At nightfall we stopped here for shelter, not knowing it was demon land. What is your name, asura? Why did you come so arrogant, secretly making war?"

Then Paklan the yaksha woman understood that they were soldiers of Phra Chakri. Glad, she told the monkey: "Formerly I was a servant at the feet of the lord of Mount Meru. I committed adultery with a young woman named Ketsaramala. The lord was angry and punished me by cursing me into yaksha form, sending me to guard the thousand-eyed lord's pool, named Paklan, lord among yakshas. Whenever I met a soldier of the Avatara who bears the discus, and that soldier stroked my ugly body, only then would I be released from the heavy punishment of the curse. Today my suffering and pain are ended. My joy has no equal. Because I came and troubled you, please forgive me and show mercy."

Then Angkhot, grandson of Kosiy, understood the asura's story. The monkey lord felt mercy. He stretched out his hand and stroked her back. The yaksha punishment was cleared away. Her body changed back into a god, and she flew to the enduring sky.

Then mighty Hanuman, battle-wise, Chomphuphan of strong power, and the monkey troops heard the roaring noise. The splendid monkeys all woke together. Some crawled, some ran in confusion, calling for one another with loud clamor.

Hanuman cried out and shouted to the troops, great and small: "What has happened? What is the cause of this loud alarm?"

Then all the monkey troops heard Hanuman call, and the monkeys fell silent at once.

Then the splendid grandson of Hatsanai, after sending Paklan the asura away, returned to the place of the mighty army.

When he reached mighty Hanuman and Chomphuphan, the great commanders, he told what had happened from the beginning: how he had fought the giant; how Paklan the asura had been freed from the curse of creating Kosiy; how, when he stroked her body, she changed into a god and returned to the heavenly realm.

Then the two honored commanders and all the monkey troops heard the son of King Pali. They saw the merit, power, and authority of radiant Phra Narai, and they praised mighty Angkhot: "This lord is excellent among men." They spoke with one another until the sun neared dawn and light began to show. Then they raised the whole force and turned their faces along the road.

Hanuman Enters Mayan City

They led the troops across fields, hollows, and mountains, following the forest line. After five yojanas of road, near evening, they reached a city in the middle of the forest, delightful as Traitrungsa heaven. Fortifications and battle towers stood ranked, with moats, embankments, and curious arched gates. There was also a great palace, shining as if it floated in the sky. They saw no troops or people moving in or out. The three commanders looked closely, each thinking in doubt. They halted the strong army below and consulted together.

Then the strong son of Phra Phai said to the other two commanders: "This city is very strange. I will go inside and look, so I may learn whether the matter is light or grave. You, whose faces are honored, guard the troops well." Having ordered them, he walked out from the splendid monkey army, turned toward the royal city, and entered the victorious walls.

He looked at the stone-paved streets. Trees stood in rows beside them, tossing and gleaming. Flowers and fruit had fallen thickly everywhere, but he saw no people going to and fro. As he walked and looked, he wondered: "Is this a demon trick, or is this a pleasure-ground of the lord of the world? It is so full of delight and ease, like the city of Kosiy." Looking as he went, he hurried on and climbed the ornate palace.

He saw a lady of lovely form and shining beauty, her complexion like a celestial nymph. Her face glowed like the moon. Her whole body was slender and delicate. Her brows bent like painted bows; her lips were bright as red lac. Her eyes were like the eyes of a doe; her cheeks were like gleaming jewels. Her neck was like a royal swan's; her waist like a celestial kinnari's. Her arms were like Erawan's trunk, her breasts like golden lotus buds. She was beautiful in every limb, a woman without second in the world. The more he looked, the more his eyes were fastened.

"Better that I go in and question her, so I may end the doubt." Having thought this, the wise monkey lord walked toward the queenly lady.

He spoke in graceful words: "Look, young lady, shining beauty. Slender beloved in all your body, what is your name? Why are you staying alone? Where is the lord of your city? Where are all the troops, servants, and attendants? What has happened, young lady?"

Then Lady Butsamali, object of pity, saw the monkey come and ask what had happened. The noble woman was startled and afraid. She thought in her mind: "Where has this monkey lord come from? I have been under the curse of Hatsanai for thirty thousand years. I have seen no men or women, no one who could come into this place. Yet if I remain silent now, the matter will not be made clear." Having thought this, she answered: "How is it, bold monkey, that you have come up from whatever land you dwell in, all the way to this ornate great palace? You overstep yourself, asking my name without fear of the feet of the lord of Mount Meru. Hurry away from the city. It is not proper for a monkey to know the matter."

Then the brave and wise son of the Wind heard the young lady's heavenly voice, sweet as nectar and medicine to the heart. He spoke fine words: "Jewel of my eyes, highest beloved, if I do not know the matter, why should I not ask you? Is it fitting that you have no pity? What anger or trouble makes you, young woman, drive me away? I am puzzled by your words, and why you name Kosiy." Speaking this, he walked toward her. "Alas, it is not proper to hide it. Please, young crown of my heart, tell me clearly what has happened. If there is suffering or danger, I will help until my life ends. I am a soldier of the Avatara. Merit has led us to meet."

Then Lady Butsamali, heavenly young woman, saw the monkey turning his speech into flirtation and walking close in. She felt shy and disturbed. The lovely woman turned her face aside, rose from the ornate couch, and answered: "Why do you press and rush me? You show no regard at all. You speak graceful words to soften my heart, falsely saying you will help my suffering. Fie, soldier of Phra Narai, subtle as though no one could see through you. I am not light-hearted, and I will not trust your words. If you are a soldier of the bow-bearing lord, what name do you have, splendid monkey? If you tell me, I will answer you well. Do not keep pestering me and making me angry."

"Beautiful one, beautiful young woman, highest beloved, I love you as much as my own life. I have not come to accuse you with words. I am named Hanuman, soldier of Phra Narai the lord. Thotsakan stole Lady Sida and took her to Lanka city. By royal command I have been sent to seek news of the queen. So I have met you, highest lady. Your merit and mine must be joined." Speaking this, he walked close, reached, and seized the heavenly woman's hand. "Come, lovely lady, jewel of the city, sit beside your elder brother."

Then Lady Butsamali, shining beauty, shook off his hand in shame, turned aside, and answered: "Look at you. The more I speak, the more you take liberties, rude and shameless before my face. Is this mighty Hanuman, soldier of four-handed Phra Chakra? Why do you not yawn open as stars, moon, and blazing sun, so I may see the true mark of the monkey, instead of deceiving me with lying speech? But since you asked my name, I will tell you, splendid monkey. I am named Butsamali, and this city is named Mayan. Formerly Thao Tawan went to attend the lord of Traitrungsa heaven. He saw Lady Rampha, lovely as a dancer, and bound his desire to her. Whenever he went up to attend, he begged me to act as go-between for the lady. The lord pursued him to take his life and scattered his common troops. Then he cursed me too, sending me down to live alone in this royal place, suffering torment for a long time, about thirty thousand years, until a battle-wise soldier of radiant Phra Narai would come. Only then would I be freed from the stain of punishment, as the king of gods commanded."

Then mighty Hanuman smiled and answered: "Alas, you did not want to tell me. Otherwise, by now you would be free from suffering and enjoying happy ease. I will help you, lovely lady, but what will satisfy the heart?" Speaking, he teased and played, kissing the beloved one. "Watch now, dear lady." Having said this, he leapt up by his power.

He floated before the window and changed into eight arms and four faces. The moon, stars, and disk of the sun came out from his mouth in blazing light.

Then Lady Butsamali, object of pity, saw the monkey display victorious power. The young lady was startled and afraid. She covered both eyes with both hands and bent her face down, unable to look. She cried out in terror and confusion, losing all presence of mind.

Then Hanuman, wise and victorious, saw Lady Butsamali frightened and crying in confusion. Desire for her almost broke his heart. He let the magical form vanish, came down, sat pressed close to her body, smiled, and comforted the lady.

He spoke graceful words: "Beloved young jewel of my heart, I love you as much as life. Jewel of my eyes, do not be afraid." Speaking, he lifted the lovely woman, delighted in looking at her face, caressed the beloved one, kissed her cheeks, pressed close to her body, and reached for the breasts of the flower-like lady. Heavenly rain thundered through the sky. The lotus opened to receive the shining sun. Fragrance spread thick over the waters, and the two rejoiced in happy pleasure.

Then Lady Butsamali, shining beauty, after sharing delight with the mighty monkey lord, became deeply bound and lost in love. Her heart was dazed with desire. She forgot the suffering she had endured alone in Mayan, forgot her divine palace and heavenly mansion, forgot the great wealth of heaven, forgot shame and all hesitation, and rested happily against the monkey.

Then mighty Hanuman, wise in war, after close love with the lady, spoke graceful words: "Beautiful young lady, bright-eyed beloved, now blessed Phra Chakri has sent me to attend Lady Sida. If I stayed here in love and pleasure for long, I would fear punishment. I must take leave of you, jewel of my eyes; do not grieve. Is the way to great Lanka near or far, beloved? Please tell me the road I should travel, dear lady, and show mercy."

Then Lady Butsamali, shining beauty, heard Hanuman's words, and it was as if her life would end. She bent her head to his feet, tears pouring down in streams. Her heart was blocked with alarm because she would be far from the monkey lord. Unable to prevent or delay him, suffering as if struck by an arrow, she forced down her grief, raised her hand, and pointed out the road. "The road to great Lanka lies to the southwest. From here it is nine yojanas until you meet a great river, swift, vast, deep, and wide. A lovely celestial woman guards those waters. Ask that lady the way onward. As for me, my stain and punishment are ended. Please send me back to the heavenly realm according to Hatsanai's command."

Then the honored son of Phra Phai took the lady in his arms. He looked at her face with longing. He looked at her hair, eyes, breasts, and cheeks, and sighed deeply. But it was necessary, so he tossed her upward by his power into the air.

When he had sent the lady to Indra's city, the monkey lord was glad and happy. He came down from the shining palace and hurried out.

He reached Angkhot and Chomphuphan, with the brave monkey troops to left and right. He sat down in the middle of the army and told them everything that had happened.

The three commanders spoke together until dawn brightened with strong light. Then they broke camp and left Mayan, going along the road.

Suwannamali and the Great Water

They hurried the troops and soldiers, stopping and lodging in the forest. After nine yojanas of road, they reached a great river.

They saw a lovely-faced woman, slender and beautiful, sitting in the middle of the water. The monkey lord was firmly pleased. He spoke sweet words: "Look, beloved lady, why are you here in the ocean? What is your name? Do you know the way to Lanka city, lovely one, or not? Have mercy and tell me clearly, for we are going to attend Lady Sida."

Then the lovely celestial woman heard the monkey ask and answered: "I am a servant at the lotus feet of radiant Phra Isuan. I am named Suwannamali, one held in the lord's heart. He sent me to wait for the soldiers of Phra Narai the bow-bearing Avatara, who will go attend beautiful Sida, and to tell them the road to the demon city. You should lead the monkey troops across the broad great water. You will meet a matted-hair teacher, and then ask him what comes next."

Then mighty Hanuman, the great commander, heard the heavenly woman and was glad. He ordered the monkey troops to rest from the heat on the bank of the splendid water. They went down to play in the river, making loud confusion.

When they had come up from the stream, the monkey lord raised his hands above his head, recited a powerful Veda, and transformed his monkey body.

He became as large as great Brahma, as tall as the cosmic mountain. He stretched his tail across the ocean to make a road for the army.

Then the splendid monkey host walked across as if on solid earth, loud and noisy as they crossed the Ganga.

Then the strong and brave son of the Wind, when the army had crossed, hurried after the road through the forest.

They walked a little more than five yojanas. When the sun's light leaned toward afternoon, they saw the hermitage of a righteous ascetic and went together to the hut.

When they arrived, the three monkeys raised their hands above their heads and bowed at the feet of the sage with glad and delighted hearts.

Then the matted-hair teacher, strong in meditation, saw the three monkeys enter and asked: "You have brought all these troops here. Where are you going? What land and city are you from? Who has sent you, monkeys?"

Then mighty Hanuman, wise in war, answered in graceful words: "My name is Hanuman. There are Chomphuphan and Angkhot, commanding ten armies of brave troops. We are servants of blessed Phra Avatara, sent by royal command to seek news of the queen in the city of ten-faced Thotsakan the yaksha. I do not know the way to Lanka clearly, so I have come aside to ask you, revered teacher. Please tell us whether it is near or far, and have mercy."

Then the great matted-hair hermit understood that they were soldiers of Phra Chakri and was glad as if he had gained the sixteen heavens. "In this age the asuras and demons will lose their lives; their whole lineage will end. By the power of glorious Phra Narai, the ten directions will be happy and at ease. Lanka is hard to reach, full of hardship across streams, ravines, and mountains. From here the measure is fifteen yojanas. You will come to a mountain named Hemmatiran, beside the great river, and that is the crossing-place toward the demon city."

Then the three monkey commanders heard the teacher's words clearly, bowed to him, and returned to the army.

When dawn came and the sun's light cleared, the three splendid monkey lords raised the whole army and left the hut of the ascetic.

They traveled in hardship along the road. After fifteen yojanas by measure, they reached Hemmatiran mountain, its crags appearing to press the sky. Hanuman led the troops upward on the slopes of the mountain. As the sun's rays ended, the monkeys followed the light of their earrings.

They walked until they reached the mountain, and then came to the mouth of a cave. The three commanders halted the troops, not knowing where they should go.

Then the monkey troops, great and small, wondered in their hearts. Looking over the sky, they saw stars and moon scattered everywhere, their radiance shining bright, as if a hand could reach them. Phra Phai blew gently. Dew fell on their bodies, and all the monkeys grew cold. Some broke wood and struck fire in confusion, kindling fires to warm themselves.

Sampati Points Out Lanka

Then mighty Hanuman, the great commander, spoke to the grandson of Hatsanai and to loyal Chomphuphan: "In this age Narai the Avatara has descended to destroy the yakshas. He has sent us to attend the queen at Lanka city. Though it is hard and painful, we must go until we find the noble lady. We have set our hearts to serve the four-handed lord. Do not cling to life. Even if the body dies, let honor remain and be known like that royal bird, mighty Sadayu, who gave his life. That is fitting for us as soldiers of the creating Avatara. Goodness will remain through the age, until sun and moon are gone."

Then Sampati the bird, who had been cursed by the Sun and was dwelling in the mountain cave, heard voices speaking loudly and naming Sadayu the bird, saying that his life had ended. He was startled and alarmed. "I will go ask and learn whether this is true." Having thought this, he hurried out from the shining crystal cave.

The sound of his feet treading the stone was like heaven thundering. It echoed through the whole forest as if the mountain itself would break apart.

Then the monkey captains and soldiers, all the troops and attendants, heard the shaking noise. They were terrified, without courage; their bodies shook as if life would end. They ran apart in confusion, not knowing what had happened.

Some leapt, some sprang, some crawled, some climbed up the great trees. They hid in rocky overhangs in confusion, with no presence of mind. Only the three battle-wise commanders stood firm and did not flee. Each brandished sword and trident, waiting their turn to meet the foe.

Then King Sampati, brave in heart, reached the mouth of the holy cave. He stood towering and looked all around. He examined left and right but saw no one coming or going. He wondered why it was so. Then he saw the three monkeys standing beside the splendid cliff, and was greatly delighted. He spoke and asked: "Royal bird Sadayu, what danger has happened to him? You said his life was ended. Who was so bold as to fight him?"

Then the brave and strong son of the Wind heard and answered: "Formerly the four-handed Avatara lived in vow at Godavari with Phra Lak and beloved Lady Sida, wearing the dress of forest ascetics, happy and prosperous in the woods. Thotsakan devised a trick and had Maricha, the demon's kinsman, transform his body into a deer to deceive Queen Sida. The two royal lords went after the deer, and Thotsakan stole the lady away through the air. Sadayu met the asura and fought him with power. Thotsakan lost all his troops. The bird boasted in delusion, and the demon lord, fearing for his life, took off the lovely lady's ring, the ornament of Phra Narai, and hurled it at the bird. It struck his body. His wings broke and he fell to earth, though his life had not yet ended. When he met the bow-bearing lord, he offered the ring and then died. Now the lord has commanded us to seek news of the lady in the demon city."

Then brave-hearted Sampati listened to the son of the Wind tell what had happened. When he heard that his younger brother had died, he grieved: "Alas, Sadayu, you were once my dear companion in hardship. Your power was strong, yet you fought the enemy carelessly. You let that deluded asura kill and end your life. Alas, beloved one, was it fitting for you to flee to the heavenly city? I do not want to remain. It would be better to die and follow you." Lamenting in deep grief, the bird seemed nearly to lose his life.

Then powerful Hanuman saw the bird grieving and lamenting, speaking as if his senses would end. Mercy and concern moved him, and he said: "Look, bird. It is the nature of those born in the world that no one escapes death. Even Mount Meru, pillar of all worlds, will be destroyed and ruined by the fire of the age. Though you grieve more deeply than life can bear, it will not bring Sadayu back to life. Quell and end this separation. Do not grieve so deeply, bird. I wonder and wish to know: what is your name, bird, and why have all the feathers fallen from your body? It puzzles me, for I have never seen such a thing in former times."

Then Sampati, strong and powerful, heard the son of Phra Phai speak with mercy. He regained his senses and ended his grief over the separation. He spoke graceful words: "My name is Sampati. I was dear elder brother to royal bird Sadayu. We lived on the peak of Atsakan mountain. As young birds, we did not understand things. One day we saw the sun crossing the three continents, newly risen with beautiful red light, and thought it was ripe fruit that we wanted to eat. I begged my younger brother not to go, but he would not listen. He flew with the strength of a bird, meaning to seize and peck at the jeweled red chariot. The Sun grew angry and enraged, sending out heat strong as the fire of the age. I darted out to shield my younger brother, and the feathers fell from all my body. The Sun also cursed me to stay in the cave of Hemmatiran, and my feathers could not grow again until the soldiers of radiant Phra Narai, commanding monkey troops, came to cross to Lanka island and give the ring to beloved Sida. When they stopped to lodge here, the monkeys were to shout three times. Then my feathers would grow beautifully again, and I would tell them about the demon city. Have mercy, and I will point out the road for you."

Then mighty Hanuman, the great commander, heard the bird and was glad. He spoke to him kindly: "We are soldiers of the four-handed lord. We will help relieve the bird-king's distress." Having spoken, he called the army. The sound echoed in confusion through the whole mountain.

Then the captains and commanders of the splendid monkeys, with all the strong army, heard the monkey Hanuman calling loudly in confusion. Each answered and called back. They came out from clefts, valleys, ravines, and streams, running back in disorder.

When they reached the mouth of the mountain cave, they saw Sampati the bird, with feathers fallen from his whole body. The monkeys questioned one another in confusion.

Then gracious Hanuman told all the troops the bird's story: "All of you, help together, the whole splendid monkey army. Shout three times, and this bird will be freed from pain."

Then all the monkey troops heard this and were delighted. They shouted until the sky and earth resounded.

Then brave-hearted King Sampati heard the army of the Avatara shout, shaking the forest. His feathers grew beautifully, covering his body as before, with graceful patterned colors. The Sun's curse was ended, and he rejoiced. He flicked his tail, spread his wings, and swung them, wanting to test the bird's strength. He pushed off from the waters and glided powerfully up into the sky.

The sound of his wings was like the wind of the age, shaking and rumbling in confusion. The sun's light was darkened as if by cloud, and then he returned to the monkey army.

Then mighty Hanuman, wise in war, spoke graceful words: "Look, king of birds. Your curse and suffering are ended. From now on there will be only happiness and ease. Since your feathers have grown again over your whole body, point out the way to Lanka."

Then King Sampati the bird heard and spoke: "Look, lord of monkeys. Lanka island, the royal seat, lies in the middle of the ocean stream. Only one who knows how to fly can reach the asura land. Looking as far as the eye can see, it cannot be found from here. Climb onto my back, and I will fly and point out the demon city."

Then the strong and brave son of the Wind, splendid Chomphuphan the monkey, and Angkhot, grandson of Amarindra, were glad and invited one another to sit on the king of birds' back, like Death mounted on a night-bird, flying to eat the lives of asuras.

Then brave King Sampati was delighted once the monkeys were on his back. His feet pushed against the mountain peak, and the mountain cracked and split apart under the power of the royal bird. The whole earth thundered, and the bird flew up into the sky.

When they reached Khanthasingkhon mountain, he circled and pointed out the royal city: "There, that is Lanka, city of demons, set in the middle of the great sea. Seeing every detail plainly, the three commanders fixed it firmly in mind. They said: "Look, bird. We have remembered Lanka city. You of great power may return to the mountain."

Chomphuphan and the grandson of Amarindra, you two monkey lords, stay and guard the monkey troops at the mouth of the holy cave." Speaking this, he instructed the bird: "You, powerful and brave lord, I entrust Angkhot, Chomphuphan, and the monkey attendants to you." Having given his order, the son of Phra Phai set his left foot on the mountain peak. Earth, sky, and ocean shook, and he flew up into the air by his power.
