Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the thirty-fifth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives the demon women's threats against Sida, Hanuman's rescue of Sida from hanging herself, his proof that he is Rama's envoy, Sida's refusal to leave Lanka except after Rama's victory, Hanuman's destruction of the garden, his killing of the garden guard and the Sahat Kumara princes, Thotsakan's summons of Intharachit, and the opening combat between Hanuman and Intharachit.

Translation

Hanuman Meets Sida

Then the young asura women, angry with lovely Sida, invited one another into the pavilion.

They sat before the beloved lady, pulled out their clubs, and lamented aloud: "Why is it like this, Sida? The yaksha king loves you as his heart. Is it right that you will not yield, but only keep cursing him for sport? Will you make us perish along with you? Is that good, queenly lady? Later, if you do not set your heart in deep closeness with the yaksha lord, we will tear your flesh and flay the skin from your whole body to satisfy your heart, lovely one."

Then young, beloved Sida was angry at Thotsakan the asura and wounded by the attendants' words. Unable to endure, unable to bear the suffering or think what to do, her heart bruised beyond restraint, she sighed and lamented for Phra Chakri: "Why does the lord not follow and come to destroy these wicked yakshas, who speak so coarsely and say every kind of thing to this wife? I cannot think how to keep my life and wait at his feet. To stay longer is only deeper pain and grief. I will die and wait in the heavenly city." Thinking this, she made as if to go to her couch. When she saw the asura women on left and right sleeping and not stirring their bodies, she came down from the pavilion and went away.

When she came to a great ashoka tree near the lotus-scented pool, beyond the asura crowd, the beloved lady sank down in grief.

"Alas, my lord and elder, whose grace shelters the hair of my head. This wife is about to lose her life, and the lord of earth does not know my heart. It is a waste that I guarded my body waiting for him, for I will not even bow farewell. From today onward I will vanish and will not serve at his lotus feet." As she lamented, she raised her hands above her head and paid homage to all the gods in every place. She bowed down to the ground and spoke in longing: "I entrust blessed Phra Hariwong and bow-bearing Phra Lak to you. Let them have no suffering, grief, or burning illness. If the four-handed lord follows and comes, please tell him that this servant was wounded by the words of the wicked yakshas. Now I bow farewell and go to the Dusita heavens."

When the young lady, jewel of beauty, had finished entrusting herself to all the gods, she pulled down an ashoka branch and raised her body, hanging from it.

She tied her garment firmly around her neck, wrapped it around the great ashoka branch, closed her eyes, fixed her heart, and leapt down.

Then the strong and brave son of the Wind saw the noble lady tie her neck and leap. He was startled. His body shook as if life would end; his heart burned as if in fire. He sprang straight down with all his quick strength.

When he reached her, he untied the garment bound around Phra Lakshmi's neck and lowered her to the surface of the earth. Then the monkey lord leapt down.

Seeing that her life was not ended, his heart was filled with gladness. He ran in, bowed at her feet, and crouched before the beloved lady.

Then fair Lady Sida, beloved as the moon, saw the monkey come and bow with joined hands. The lady grew angry like the fire of doom and spoke: "Hey, forest monkey, beast-born one. Why have you done this base thing to me, who am tormented with pain? Ten-faced Thotsakan stole me away from Phra Chakri the lord. My breast is wounded with grief; I do nothing but eat tears all day. Unable to endure, I hanged myself. Evil monkey, deluded one, why did you come block me and prevent my life from ending?"

Then the gracious son of Phra Phai bowed his head and reported: "May Your Majesty show mercy. My name is Hanuman. I am a soldier of Phra Narai the lord. Now my crown-lord has come and assembled the monkey armies at the foot of Khanthamat mountain with his bow-bearing younger brother. When all is ready, he will raise the army to fight and destroy the asuras. He commanded your servant to come report the message and inform your splendid feet that Phra Lak and Phra Chakri grieve deeply at all times."

Then lovely Lady Sida heard him name Phra Chakra, and it was like heavenly nectar, medicine to the heart. Love and longing rose in her mind, and the beloved lady could not restrain her grief. Tears filled her eyes with yearning. She sighed and spoke: "You say you are a soldier of radiant Phra Narai the Avatara. How is it that I do not know this monkey?"

Then mighty Hanuman, wise in war, heard the noble queen. He joined his hands and answered: "When Your Majesty dwelt with the conch-bearing lord, I had not yet come to be his servant." As he spoke, he offered the ring and the scarf: "The lord of earth gave these to me. He said that the queen's ring was taken off and hurled at the bird by the asura, and when Sadayu was near death, he gave it to powerful Phra Chakra. As for the royal scarf of the noble beloved lady, which she entrusted to the monkeys, the king has given it to me as the sign."

Then lovely Lady Sida saw the splendid royal ring and her own scarf. It was as if she had met the mighty lord himself. Yet she became suspicious of the splendid monkey and spoke sweet words: "These things fell in the middle of the forest. You may be one of the giants and have found them while roaming the woods. That wretched ten-headed one may have sent you deliberately with them, making a trick to deceive me and keep me from dying by cunning and false words. I do not believe the speech of base, wicked ones."

Then the wise and brave son of the Wind heard the noble lady's words, bowed at her lotus feet, and reported: "Mother of the world, do not be suspicious. I have not come to lure and deceive you. The lord gave me a secret matter to end Your Majesty's doubt. When the royal father prepared the splendid auspicious coronation and set the great Moli bow in Mithila city, Mother was hidden at the window. When the four-handed lord came walking in, your eyes and his eyes met. Each of you felt love; each thought of delight and happiness. This secret is the sign, known only to Your Majesty."

Then fair Lady Sida, lovely one, heard Hanuman speak and all suspicion left her mind. She received the scarf and ring, raised them to her head, and wept. Tears flooded her eyes; she sighed and sobbed in longing.

"Alas, mighty lord. This wife thought she would take leave and die first, yet you still care for this poor woman and have struggled to travel after me. You did not think of your own hardship, but pushed through thickets and took shortcuts through forest and wilds, suffering greatly in sorrow and pain with your lovely younger brother. All this has happened because you loved your wife, and so were deceived by the deluded asura. Otherwise, how could Thotsakan have stolen your younger one away and made you grieve and long, burning in sorrow and distress?" As she lamented, the lady struck her breast as if she would lose all sense.

Then victorious Hanuman saw the noble queen grieving and lamenting. He reported: "Crown-lady, do not suffer and burn in separation and grief. The cause by which that Thotsakan secretly stole Your Majesty away is the karma leading him to his death, to the destruction of the whole yaksha lineage, to the vanishing of the solar line in Lanka by the powerful arrows of the four-handed lord. Since you have suffered such deep sorrow, please, noble beloved lady, sit in this monkey's hand. I will carry you away and present you to blessed Phra Narai, so that your suffering and grief may end. Even if the yakshas overtake us, I will kill them and end their lives."

Then lovely Lady Sida heard the son of Phra Phai and answered: "Look, mighty Hanuman. Your words are not right. Why do you think so lightly, without considering wisely? Thotsakan stole me away; this itself is already a matter of doubt. If you, moreover, came and carried me away from the demon city, it would become a stain throughout all ten directions. Even blessed Phra Avatara, lord beneath heaven, would become suspicious. What you say is according to your duty, but I cannot go with you. Splendid monkey, hurry back and report to the lord of earth that he should come quickly, kill and destroy that Thotsakan, ending the power of his solar lineage. Only then will I leave Lanka and go attend the feet of the four-handed lord."

Then mighty Hanuman, wise in war, heard the noble queen and reflected: "This lady is Phra Lakshmi herself; in the three worlds and earth there is none like her. She is complete in quick wisdom and understands past and present. Faithful to her husband, she would give up her life. She is worthy to be the mother of the gods through all the heavens and earth." Having thought this, he raised his hands above his head and reported to the noble queen: "Your Majesty's words are true. I did not think the matter through. Quell and quiet your heart for now; do not hastily destroy your embodied life. If Mother alone perishes, the Avatara and younger Phra Lak will perish together as three. How then will there be war against the yakshas? The armies and troops would be wasted. Keep your body alive and wait for the lord. I ask leave of the young lady to go report the matter to radiant Phra Narai." Having spoken, he raised joined fingers in homage and hurried away.

Then young, beloved Lady Sida, when the mighty son of the Wind had gone from the path of her eyes, slowly quieted her deep sorrow. The noble queen glanced left and right. Seeing no one come or go, she hurried up into the pavilion at once.

She lowered herself onto the couch, raised her hands in homage at the splendid feet, thought of the grace of blessed Phra Chakri, and fell softly asleep.

Hanuman Destroys the Garden

Then the gracious son of the Wind, after he had left the noble lady, climbed up into a leafy tree.

He reflected on the matter: "I am a soldier of the conch-bearing lord. I will serve by breaking the enemy with my strength, but I have not yet seen the asuras' hand. Today I will test their power and learn the strength of the yakshas. If I kill and destroy them as an eyesore, the later war will be lighter." Having thought this, he displayed his power. The ten directions thundered and shook. He leapt, sprang, pierced, and rushed about, breaking trees in confusion.

All the trees and fruiting trees were broken and felled by the splendid monkey's hands, smashed into ruin with a roar like wind sweeping through.

Then the yaksha captains, brave soldiers guarding the garden, saw the base monkey daringly pulling down trees until they lay ruined and useless. Their eyes reddened with anger like firelight. They cried out and called their servants in confusion.

Then the asura yaksha troop heard their captains calling and all ran in, alarmed.

They saw the bold white monkey, fierce, crude, and brave, pulling and breaking the trees in the garden until branches and limbs were smashed to ruin. Some threw, some drove him, some carried lassos and pushed in to snare him with loud noise. Other groups ran in to strike him, and the asuras moved to seize the monkey.

Then mighty Hanuman, wise in war, saw the troops coming to attack and was glad. He arched his brows, squinted, flattened his ears, shouted threats, teased them, and made faces. He leapt and rushed down, pursuing and killing the giants.

Then the army troops saw the monkey press and attack. Trembling with anger, they moved into the fight.

They hurled weapons in confusion, so many that they could not be counted, shooting, jostling, stabbing, and cutting in turmoil. They surrounded and pursued him, not letting him out.

Then the strong and brave son of the Wind displayed his power and entered the middle of the asura army.

Hands slapped, feet kicked, mouths bit; he struck, beat, and killed the yakshas. Some died, crouched down, and lost their lives; the asuras pressed on endlessly as if they cost nothing. Alone, he drove and fought them, seized weapons on left and right, turned, cut, and stabbed in every direction. Asuras died scattered everywhere.

Then the demon troops, great and small, brandished weapons like flames of fire and pressed the attack close in.

Some snared, some struck with loud noise. Some groups ran forward to block him. Some leapt, some sprang, some jumped and cut, firmly fighting and killing.

Then victorious Hanuman met and blocked them in combat, driving in to fight close.

He swung left and right in tumult with fierce, brave power. All the asura demon troops lost their lives, crushed in heaps.

Then the asura troops who were left alive would not return to the battle. They all fled straight away.

When they reached the palace of the yaksha Sahat Kumara, they bowed their heads at his feet and reported: "There is a forest monkey, a white one of great power, bold and able. He has come into the garden and committed great insolence, felling the trees until they are ruined. Your servants surrounded him to seize him, but he fought back against the yakshas. Demon troops lie dead across the earth, and no one can withstand him."

Then Sahat Kumara, wise in war, heard this and each was angry like burning fire. "Hah, that arrogant monkey will see what it means to boast of courage. I will eat his flesh for sport." Stamping their feet, leaping and springing, they cried: "Hey, battle-wise demon commanders, quickly prepare the war-host. Choose only those with fierce and firm power. Let the full array of a thousand armies be complete, and I will go fight that forest monkey."

Then the ministers, great and small, received the command of the mighty princes, bowed in homage, and ran out in confusion.

They arranged the full formation of a thousand armies, layered with yaksha troops. A thousand divisions looked as though they would bewilder the eyes; their body-colors and face-colors all differed. Some had curved tusks, some tusks arched out from the mouth; faces grimaced, faces masked and grinning. They wore headcloths and many kinds of dress, and all hands held weapons: spears, swords, bows, javelins, pikes, shields, bucklers, lances, halberds in confusion. Some carried stone-clubs and cudgels, counted by oceans, waiting for the asura princes.

Then the yaksha Sahat Kumara, each prince in turn, went to the bathing pool.

All thousand bathed and cleansed themselves. Scented water fragrant with pollen filled the air. Their lower garments all had naga-hemmed borders; the cloths they wore had varied rice-grain patterns. Each put on jeweled armor, breast-bands of swan-vine design in hammered gold, ruby chest-plates, chains and sashes, gold armlets carved with moving makaras, and diamond rings gleaming like fireflies. Jeweled crowns and ear-ornaments were set with gems; divine flowers formed delicate clusters. All thousand wore splendor, with the right hand holding bow and arrow. They came down from the ornate palace and went one after another to mount their chariots.

O chariot, royal chariot: a thousand chariots with jeweled wheel-hubs, soft, curved, graceful yokes, drawn by fierce elephant-lions, some by royal lions, tigers, and lions, a thousand pairs leaping and running proudly. Charioteers held clubs and shouted, driving swiftly as wind. Victory flags and rows of streamers, great banners and pendant flags fluttered at their ends. Canopies, jeweled lines, peacock parasols, fans, and sunshades moved. Trumpets, pipes, drums, and gongs sounded; demon troops shouted fiercely until the noise shook. Dust rose like thick smoke, and they drove the royal chariots onward in haste.

When they arrived, they roared lion-cries and proclaimed to the troops on left and right that they should divide by sides, inspect and patrol, and surround the garden.

Then the brave soldiers received the command of Sahat Kumara and ran in every direction in confusion.

Each group took its side to guard, inspecting so there was no way out. All held spears, swords, and firearms, intending to kill in battle.

Then Sahat Kumara, wise in war, stood in their chariot in the middle of the army and saw the monkey. Anger seized them. Grinding their tusks and teeth, furious, stamping their feet with a crash like thunder, they shouted: "Hey, arrogant forest monkey, from what place have you come? What is your monkey land, lineage, race, name, and title, that you act so boldly and proudly, coming into the asura garden? It was not enough to fell the trees; you also killed yaksha soldiers. Do you not fear me, who possess power? Your life will end."

Then the strong and brave son of the Wind answered with proud words: "Hey, demon lord, wicked one. I do not know my name or city. I live only in streams, mountains, and forest haunts. I wandered alone and did not know whose garden this was. Seeing ripe fruit, I picked and ate it. The asuras joined together to surround and chase me. They pressed in to fight; unable to stand against me, they died. You have raised armies, jeweled chariots, horses, and brave troops. What will you do to me, demon lord? Or do you mean to make war?"

Then the yaksha Sahat Kumara heard the monkey's speech and reflected: "We are kings of the solar line. It is not fitting to wage battle with a monkey. It would lose honor and shame the heart; the three worlds would scorn and blame us." Thinking this, they answered with lion-roars: "Hey, forest monkey-born one, this garden belongs to our royal father, who has long set us to guard it. We will seize you and present you to him. If you fear the destruction of your body, come down and bow at our lotus feet, and we will grant you life."

Then victorious Hanuman heard and answered: "Asuras, do not keep boasting. I alone will fight and end your yaksha troops. If you defeat me, then speak and brag of giant power."

Then the sons of the ten-headed lord heard the battle-wise monkey. All thousand burned with anger like the fire of doom. They ground their tusks, gnashed their teeth, stamped their feet, and cried out to the troops: "Quickly seize the base monkey. Destroy him and end his life."

Then the asura yaksha host heard the asuras' command and drove the troops in.

They hurled weapons like showers of rain. Each ran across to block and pursue. Some shot bows and crossbows, firearms, flintlocks, and stone-clubs.

Then the strong and brave son of the Wind dodged and slipped swiftly back and forth, running through into the middle of the army.

The giants cut and stabbed in confusion, but not even the tip of a splendid monkey hair was scratched. Alone he drove and killed, and the asuras died, smashed in heaps.

Then the army troops, the more they died, the more they pressed into battle, driving in to strike and beat the monkey.

Some surrounded and seized him in uproar. Some took great hammers. Some groups struck with maces; their shouts echoed and shook.

Then mighty Hanuman, great commander, turned and blocked them swiftly, pressing forward and attacking the giants.

He kicked left and struck right without stopping, with fierce power like a spinning discus. All the demon troops lost their lives and perished.

Then the brave-hearted sons of the ten-headed lord saw the monkey drive and kill the demon army until the whole battle-host lay shattered and dead. All thousand stamped their feet and cried out, with thunderous sound until the earth shook. Each displayed his power, set arrow to bow, and shot by his might.

The arrows cracked like thunderbolts. A thousand shafts filled the sky, rushed straight down, and surrounded the monkey's body.

Then mighty Hanuman, wise in war, saw the asura arrows come to attack. By his power he gathered them in his two hands, broke them, threw them aside, and cried in mockery: "Hey, hey, look, yakshas. The arrows you shot all have great power and might, thick across the whole sky, yet they do not even scratch the tips of my hairs. Today your lives will end. Do you know it or not, asuras? I am Phra Kala, king of the unrighteous, come to kill the yakshas." Speaking this, he leapt by his power and chased the giants.

He fought close, struck heavily, and broke the chariots, smashing all of them as if cut to pieces. The charioteers, lions, and yoked beasts died scattered, before even a blink of the eye.

Then the yaksha Sahat Kumara, with chariots and asura troops gone, grew angry like spreading fire. Eyes bulging, tusks and teeth grinding, amid thunderous confusion, all thousand brandished weapons and ran in to face him in battle.

Each struck, cut, and stabbed. Each displayed brave strength. Each charged and pressed, leaping to attack. The demon lords did not think of life.

Then the strong and brave son of the Wind rushed and leapt to meet the giants with supreme fierce power. He seized the yakshas' clubs and turned them back, driving and beating in confusion. Brave met brave, and they fought back and forth in turns.

The monkey lord struck them down scattered everywhere, then drew the trident and killed the yakshas. Heads cut off, bodies cut apart, lying thick across the field, all thousand asuras perished.

Then the demon troops, great and small, wounded and near death, scattered away and ran straight into the royal city.

When they arrived, they went to Mahothon, the yaksha commander, and told everything that had happened in the battle, completely and in detail.

Then brave-hearted great Mahothon heard the demon troops and rushed in alarm into the royal hall.

When he reached it, he bowed his head and reported to the sovereign asura king: "There is a fierce-hearted forest monkey. It has come into the garden, destroying the fruiting trees, tearing them up, pulling, breaking trunks and branches. We surrounded it to seize it, but it fought back and killed the giants. Your thousand royal sons went to battle and lost their bodies, together with all horses, chariots, and elephants, by the hand of a wild forest monkey."

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line heard and his anger multiplied, as if fire had been set against his heart. He rose from the jeweled couch and stamped his foot until everything shook. His ten mouths cried out with a roar: "Hah, arrogant forest monkey! It comes acting bold and proud, not considering that it is beast-born. It insults me, who am of Brahma's line. It will lose its life in a blink." Having spoken, he ordered the palace women: "Quickly go together and find mighty Intharachit, my beloved son, and bring him now."

Then the beautiful palace women received the asura king's command, raised joined hands, and hurried away together.

When they reached the prince's palace, they sat down and bowed in homage. They reported: "The crown of kings has sent us to inform your lotus feet. Now there is a forest monkey, bold, crude, and brave, which has killed your younger brothers and ended their lives. The royal command summons you now."

Then Intharachit, yaksha of the solar line, learned the news, and heat like fire filled him. The asura burned in anger. He rose from his bright jeweled couch, with the palace women to left and right, and went in procession to the royal hall.

When he arrived, he bowed his head in homage to his royal father, in the midst of the asura giants, and waited to hear the king's command.

Then the battle-wise ten-faced king, when he saw mighty Intharachit, beckoned and called his son. He spoke by royal command, telling him everything that had happened: "You who carry the glory of the solar line, raise the ten armies. Go out to fight and destroy the monkey, ending his body. If he can be captured alive, capture him and bring him here, and I will satisfy my heart against him."

Then Intharachit of the solar line raised joined hands and bowed to the king. The giant answered: "Lord, crest of the people, do not burn with worry over this beast. It is one arrogant creature alone; how much brave power can it have? Your servant will go seize it and present it to Your Majesty." Having reported this, he took leave and returned to the victorious asura palace.

When he arrived, he sat upon a shining radiant seat and ordered the great commanders: "Quickly prepare the troops and chiefs. Choose only those with fierce power, fully equipped with every weapon. We will go seize that evil monkey and present it to our royal father."

Then the battle-wise demon commanders received the command of the twenty-armed lord's son and hurried out.

They levied the five-commander battle array. Riders on rhinoceroses, tigers, and lions formed the vanguard, carrying pikes, halberds, spears, and guns, wild and delighted, reckless and fierce. Protecting wings and the strong divisions, all brave in body, sprang up to ride lions and powerful wild bulls, swinging maces, grinding their teeth with a rumble, accustomed to charging Indra's battle. Quartermasters, flanking screens, and the rear guard held lances and swords like bows and arrows, riding camels, horses, nagas, birds, elephant-birds, and elephants. The central army held every weapon, riding antelopes, cattle, and buffaloes, together with the ornate royal chariot, arrayed in layers and waiting for the asura lord.

Then powerful Intharachit the yaksha, when the troops were arranged, went to bathe.

They opened channels of golden lotus jewels, scattering spray like rain. Fragrance spread and bathed him, mixed with flower-pollen. Then he put on lower garments and cloth, composed with raised patterns and curling stems, with ornate hanging ends and side-cloths, and a gold upper garment woven with floating roundels. A ruby chest-plate and breast ornament shone; three garlanded chains hung down. Gold armlets and bracelets were set with gems, and diamond rings gleamed in Garuda-shaped settings. He wore a great nine-gem crown with flower ear-ornaments set in hammered gold, took up the naga-noose arrow like the fire of doom, and walked to mount the royal chariot.

O war chariot, with graceful deep-curved yoke, jeweled spokes set on ornate wheels, incense-streaming hubs, and a sky-floating pavilion throne. It was drawn by mighty lions. The charioteer held a javelin, and flags were planted on the curved tips, fluttering above. Peacock parasols, royal canopies, and rows of banners crowded together. The troops were packed in loud confusion. Trumpets, gongs, and drums thundered. The voices of the troops shouted in fierce delight, proudly excited for battle. Thick smoke darkened the sky, and they drove on in warlike haste.

When he reached the garden, he saw the yaksha Sahat Kumara lying dead on the ground and felt boundless grief. Then he glanced and saw the monkey, and anger pierced his heart like an arrow. He halted the jeweled chariot and proclaimed, asking: "Hey, foul forest monkey, what is your name? Why do you act bold and proud, rushing in to destroy the asuras? Then mighty Hanuman, wise in war, heard the son of the twenty-armed king boast of his power. He clapped his hands and laughed in mockery: "Hey, look, yaksha. Why do you say that I insulted the asuras? That is wrong. I am alone, without companions. Your people crowded in countless number, group after group rushing in to fight. At a loss, I had to battle them. In this case, who is at fault? Think carefully and do not be rash. As for asking my name, giant, what do you want? If you tell yours first, afterward the monkey will tell you. Do not keep boasting of power. I do not fear your might."

Then the son of the ten-headed yaksha heard him and shouted back: "Hey, common forest monkey. My name is mighty Intharachit, famed as brave throughout all three worlds. I am royal son of the demon king, and even King Makhawan fears my power. What is a forest monkey beside that? How could it endure my mighty arrow? Now your life will end by the power of me, the strong one."

Then the strong and brave son of the Wind heard and cried back: "So you are named Intharachit, son of the ten-faced yaksha. You speak boldly and proudly, bragging of mighty power. Even if you have a potent arrow to attack me, I will fight with empty hands, break you by brave strength, and kill you to the last breath, together with the demon troops you have raised."

Then mighty Intharachit the yaksha heard the monkey speak and grew angry like the fire of the world's end. He ground tusks and teeth, stamped his foot, and shouted, his voice like thunder: "Hah, fierce-hearted forest monkey, I will hack you into pieces with my own hand." As he spoke, he ordered the soldiers: "Hey, battle-wise demon troops, quickly surround and seize the monkey. Cut him apart and end his life."

Then the great asura yaksha host received the order, raised joined hands, and drove in with loud noise.

All the soldiers riding beasts brandished weapons and surrounded him. They shot arrows, crossbows, and firearms, and the noise shook the earth.

Then the strong and brave son of the Wind met and blocked them in battle, charged, and chased the giants.

The yakshas surrounded and attacked him, but the monkey turned back around, kicking, slapping, biting, and grappling with them in confusion.

Then the more the asura yaksha host died, the more they pressed onward, chasing and killing the monkey.

They hurled weapons in confusion. Each shot arrows. Some swung javelins and heavy spears, fighting without thought of life.

Then victorious Hanuman fought alone in the close press, charging and striking the asuras.

He seized the weapons of the demon troops, leapt and sprang to kill them. Heads and feet were cut off everywhere, and the yakshas died crushed in heaps.

Then mighty Intharachit saw the monkey strike the giant troops until all had lost their lives. In anger, he drew his bow and set an arrow, intending to kill and end Hanuman's body. He pulled it back with victorious strength, and the demon lord shot it.

The noise thundered in uproar, and arrows too many to count struck mighty Hanuman's body by the asura's power.

Then the victorious son of Phra Phai, though struck by Intharachit's arrows, had not even his monkey body scratched. His two hands reached, turned, and seized every arrow, breaking them for sport in his hands. Then he displayed power and leapt forward.

He kicked Intharachit the asura, who could not withstand him and fell from the chariot. The royal lions and charioteer died, and the victorious chariot was smashed to ruin.

Then Intharachit, yaksha of the solar line, fell to the ground. The asura sprang up and stood firm, his royal hand brandishing the victorious bow, swift as a spinning discus. He charged and pressed into attack, pursuing the monkey.

His left foot pressed on the splendid monkey's knee; his right hand raised the arrow. They turned and grappled in combat, each with mighty power, neither yielding.

Then strong and mighty Hanuman dodged and fought close, planting his foot on the asura's knee.
