Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the thirty-sixth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Intharachit's naga-noose attack on Hanuman, Hanuman's capture and deliberate surrender, the failed attempts to execute him in Lanka, his trick by which his body and tail are set aflame, the burning and divine rebuilding of Lanka, Hanuman's return and report to Rama, Rama's rebuke and pardon, and the monkey army's march to Khanthakala mountain opposite Lanka.

Translation

Hanuman Submits to the Naga-Noose

Then Intharachit, the powerful yaksha, fought on while thinking in his heart: "This is only a wild forest monkey, yet he is hardy, enduring, able, bold, and full of fierce power. Is it possible that a demon should fight him and not lose his life? I am a lord of great force; even when I went to subdue Kosi, my body was not distressed like this fight against a forest monkey." Having thought this, he drew the naga-noose arrow, whose power shook the earth, set it to the string, drew the bow swiftly, and shot it out with the force of his magic.

The arrow changed back into a brave serpent. It slid forward, spread its hood to the highest heaven, its red eyes like sunlight, and spat poison as it rushed to attack. It coiled around Hanuman's throat, arms, and legs, binding every part of the splendid monkey's body with the fierce strength of the naga.

Then the son of the Wind, strong and bold, was struck by the demon's naga-noose. Bound and pinned over his whole body, he shouted and shook himself, testing the yaksha's serpent-bond. By his power it loosened and slipped away. The monkey considered: "This son of Thotsakan has power because of his magic arrow. Is Amarin, crown of heaven, truly not overcome by this demon lord's power? Even so, if I shake myself, the bond will break. How could the naga-noose withstand my strength? But I will stay and watch what these fools will do." Having thought this, he pretended to fall and lie still. He did not move his body at all. He grimaced, shut his eyes, and breathed as if life were about to leave him.

Then Intharachit, the powerful yaksha, saw that the monkey had been struck by the arrow and rejoiced. He clapped his hands and laughed in delight. Pointing at Hanuman's face, he mocked him: "Hey, beast-born one, why lie rolling there on the ground? Where is your proud boldness now, base creature?" Having spoken, he commanded the yaksha troops: "Let ten companies of powerful soldiers hurry and assemble. Bind this forest monkey tightly with great iron cables. But do not let him die. I will take him and present him to my father."

Then the yaksha soldiers received the command, paid homage, took leave, and came dragging iron cables in a noisy crowd.

Some went in and bound him tightly, fastening him so he could not move. They pulled him along, but kept their distance because they feared the great power of the monkey.

Then the battle-skilled son of Thotsakan, victorious, dismissed his army and returned on foot into the city.

Then the yaksha soldiers dragged the monkey in a loud uproar, following the lord of asuras.

When Intharachit reached the city of Lanka, he went up to attend his father.

He bowed his head and reported to the war-skilled king of demons: "Your son raised the army and went to capture a fierce monkey. He has power, ability, boldness, and strength. He destroyed many thousands of troops. Now I have seized him and brought him here in bonds."

Then the ten-headed lord of the yaksha solar line heard this and was glad. The asura embraced his son. "You are worthy of the race of Brahma, shining with power like corrosive fire. Enemies who scheme crookedly will all be ended by your beloved hand. Your victory over the monkey will spread your glory through the three worlds. You are fit to inherit the yaksha solar line and be the crest set above the city of Lanka." Having spoken, he roared like a lion: "Hey, yaksha executioners, take this vile monkey away and end his life."

Then the brave-hearted demon executioners bowed their heads to receive the royal order, and the demon captains hurried out.

They crowded around, dragged him, and pulled him along. They surrounded him front and back, struck him, shoved him, and drove him in confusion, bringing him to the city of Lanka.

When they arrived, they helped one another tie and fasten the splendid monkey's arms and body. They stabbed him with lances, spears, and tridents. Some struck him with clubs as large as palmyra trunks. Some attacked with iron hammers, some cut at him with axes, some battered him with heavy mallets, and some hacked him with polearms in a furious crowd.

Then bold Hanuman, the great soldier, shook off the cables that bound him at once and seized the demons' weapons. He brandished them, showing his heroic strength. The sound shook the whole yaksha world. Leaping and springing, he pressed into the asuras and attacked them.

He stabbed, cut, hewed, and smashed them. Heads were severed; feet and limbs were cut away on left and right. Demons lay dead in heaps by the power of the monkey's strength.

Then the war-skilled chief executioner saw the forest monkey come out to attack. He grew angry as if fire had been kindled against his body. He stamped his feet, gnashed his teeth, and drove all the demons forward. Soldiers and officers beat one another into the fight in a wild rush.

Those who were afraid would not go in to seize him; they clenched their teeth and ran back in flight. Those who were brave entered the fight and tried to bind the monkey in the commotion.

After that the chief royal executioner said to the demons great and small: "This wretched wild monkey does not lose his life when stabbed and cut. Go together and bring an iron mortar and iron pestles to kill him. Pound this base creature into dust and ashes, and then he will lose his life."

Then the yaksha troops heard their chief's order and were glad. They ran off in a scrambling crowd.

When they arrived, they all busied themselves rolling and pulling the great iron mortar. Those who were tired stopped to catch breath; others found iron pestles and carried them back.

Then the bold chief executioner, when he saw that the asura soldiers had obtained mortar and pestles, rejoiced. He said, "Hey, demons, come bind the splendid monkey together. Put him into this iron mortar and pound the base one to fragments."

Then the brave asura troops heard their chief's command, and each one leapt in.

They seized his feet, his body, and his hands, and threw him into the great iron mortar. Some grabbed pestles swiftly and pounded in turn amid the confusion.

Then the son of Phra Phai, brave-hearted, was not scratched even to the tip of a body-hair. He displayed his terrible noble power, snapped the iron cables into many pieces, seized the pestles with both hands, wrenched them free, stood up, brandished them as weapons, and beat the demons in a chaotic rush.

Legs broke, heads split, and bodies were severed. The dead lay scattered beyond counting. Panic ran through the victorious city; officers and common soldiers alike lost their senses.

After that Hanuman sat hugging his knees, head bowed in weariness, motionless where he was, as if some obstruction were in his body.

Then the executioner chiefs, having no more idea how to kill the monkey, turned back toward the royal hall.

When they arrived, they bowed at the feet of the ten-headed king and reported: "The forest monkey is fierce-hearted. We stabbed and cut him with weapons, but his body did not die. He turned back and fought the asuras, and they fell dead across the ground. We who are royal executioners cannot kill him. Our power, thought, and heart are spent. May Your Majesty show mercy."

Then the ten-headed yaksha lord heard this as if fire had been thrust against his body. His ten mouths shouted in a roar that shook the yaksha palace: "Hey, arrogant forest monkey! Why can he not be killed? Hey, lord of elephant work, bring the rutting war elephant named Banlai Chakkrawan. Send it out to destroy the monkey."

Then the elephant-master, brave in battle, received the command of the twenty-armed king and hurried away on foot.

He had the brave, tall, rutting elephant bound and dressed with splendid gear, hooks, and restraints complete. The chief mahout mounted its neck with goad in hand; the rear mahout braced himself behind. Gnashing their teeth, they drove it out quickly.

When they arrived, they urged it in to gore with the brave elephant's strength. It lunged down with its tusks, while its feet kicked and struck in confusion.

Then bold Hanuman, the great soldier, dodged and moved with quick agility, leaping and climbing along the war-elephant's tusks.

He killed the mahouts and elephant-men, broke the royal elephant's neck, and it fell to the ground, destroyed and emptied of life.

Then the yaksha executioners and all the asura troops saw the monkey display his power. Their fear made their bodies shake and their spirits fly away. The asuras were terrified and did not wait to face him. They ran in confusion to attend the demon king.

When they arrived, they bowed and reported to King Thotsakan: "We drove the elephant in to gore and strike the wild forest monkey. He did not lose his life. His power was fierce and strong. He turned back, fought, contended, and struggled for victory. He killed asuras, elephant-men, and mahouts; demon soldiers died beyond counting. The royal elephant also perished by the monkey's great power."

Then war-skilled Thotsakan heard this as if struck by poison-fire. His heart burned, and he was stunned in thought: "What cause is this? Why can this forest monkey not be killed? His power and magic are strange and astonishing." Having thought this, he commanded the demons great and small: "Hurry and go together. Bring this forest monkey in before me."

Then the yaksha ministers received the command of the asura king, bowed, and went out from the royal hall.

They crowded around Hanuman and bound him with great cables until he was tight. Some mocked him, some drove him and beat him, and they dragged him along in a confused mass.

When they reached the royal court, the soldiers great and small led the forest monkey in and presented him to the asura lord.

Then the ten-headed lord of the yaksha solar line looked at the fierce, attacking monkey and saw his bold and warlike manner. "Of all monkeys in the forest realm, none can compare with this deluded one. Alone he kills demons, looking like Death himself. Such skill cannot be found. He should be kept as a soldier." Having thought this, the demon king spoke sweetly: "You have acted wickedly, and your fault reaches the ending of your life. I was going to destroy you, but when I see your face I feel pity. Now I think I will keep you. If your heart agrees to stay, I will foster and support you, and I will not let your life be ended."

Then Hanuman, mighty and strong, heard the demon's rich words as if he had gained the heaven of Indra. "Now the plan I imagined has succeeded. I will burn the victorious city completely, so the whole land and the base asuras are heated with distress." Having thought this, he answered: "Since Your Majesty does not kill me, but would keep me under your lotus feet and use me as a soldier, your mercy has no limit. But how can I remain alive anywhere? The yakshas have crowded around me, beaten me, stabbed me, cut me, and wounded me again and again. Kill me and free me from suffering. Lord who rules Lanka, show mercy."

Then the ten-faced yaksha heard the monkey's speech and answered: "My mind feels pity for you. You say that you cannot stay alive, and that I should allow your life to be killed; I am at a loss and cannot forbid it. Yet the asuras beat, stab, and cut you without ending your body. How can you be freed from torment? With what should you be killed?"

Then bold Hanuman, the great soldier, heard the asura and was glad. He falsely accused himself with a trick: "If I am to be killed with weapons, how will my body ever end? Have cotton wool brought, with cloth soaked in resin-oil. Wrap it around my whole body, from head to tail. On the outside use straw as rope and bind it on. Then set fire to it. Burn me until life is ended. My blood and flesh will vanish together, and I will not long endure suffering."

Then the ten-headed yaksha lord heard without understanding the trick, and the asura rejoiced. He gave a royal command: "Hey, yaksha soldiers, go bring oil and cotton, and do as he says."

Then the diligent executioners received the command, paid homage, and ran off in a crowd.

Some groups rushed to carry straw. Some shouldered great jars of resin-oil. Others brought baskets of cotton and fire-kindling cloth. When they had obtained everything, they hurried back.

When they arrived, they soaked and mixed the materials, wrapped them around the forest monkey's whole body, and smeared him with resin-oil, completing the order of the demon king.

Then brave-hearted Thotsakan took up the jeweled spear Surakan, blazing like a gem. He turned and brandished it, flashing with radiant sparks, then stepped forward and touched it to the monkey's body.

Flames rose up bright and fierce, clear and shining, hotter than the sun by the destructive power of the victorious spear.

Then bold Hanuman, the great soldier, was delighted when the fire caught. He sprang and ran into the palace precinct.

He went about setting fire to the royal palaces. The fire of destruction blazed up into the sky. Elephant-stables, horse-stables, and soldiers' houses were thrown into confusion across the whole city.

Then the ten-headed lord of the yaksha solar line saw the flames rising, bright, shining, and hotter than the fire at the end of an age. They caught and burned the royal palaces. The demon king was startled, his body shaking. He called his two lovely chief queens and his solar-line kinsmen in a panic. He lifted Lady Montho and shining Lady Akkhi down from the glittering jeweled palace, while senior attendants and household officers followed.

Then the palace women on left and right were each frightened into confusion, as if life would end. All the inner ladies ran into one another with loud cries, shrieking in terror and losing their senses. They snatched this and set down that. Some grabbed mirrors and looking-glasses, not caring for gold or silver. Some seized tweezers for pulling nits, crying as they ran wildly through the moon-bright palace.

Then the ten-headed lord of the solar line led the lovely women, the inner palace attendants, all the women of the asura king's family, and his kin onto a splendid royal pavilion. They went straight to Sattanakiri mountain.

Then the asuras of power and rank were terrified and senseless. Noise filled the victorious city. Each one carried children or led grandchildren; they stumbled, crawled, and cried. They snatched baskets, mosquito nets, curtains, spinning wheels; some shouldered hearth-stands. Some clambered onto fathers-in-law and mothers-in-law; some whose wives were lost called out searching for them. The whole city was in uproar, and they all ran in panic.

Then splendid Hanuman saw the fire blaze and shine, burning throughout the demon lord's city. He shook off the burning kindling that clung to his body, hot and fierce. But the tip of his tail still carried the fire of destruction, and it tormented his body and mind. Whatever he did, it would not go out. He twisted and floundered, unable to endure. At the limit of his strength and thought, he flew to the ocean shore.

When he arrived, he leapt into the Ganga waters and soaked the splendid monkey's body. He dived and surfaced wildly in the water, and the river rose in waves and splashed.

The ocean grew murky, thick, and smoky, but the fire still would not go out. Hanuman flew up from the sea and went straight to the pavilion of his teacher.

When he arrived, he bowed with joined hands to learned Phra Narot and told the story of the battle, down to the burning of Lanka's royal city. "Now the blazing fire still clings only to the tip of my tail. I have used all my power and wisdom trying to put it out, but the flame grows twice as hot. Great teacher, please show mercy to my head. Kindly put out the fire and free me from torment."

Then Phra Narot, teacher strong in meditation, heard the son of the Wind and laughed merrily before answering: "You are a soldier of Phra Chakrakrit. Can you not put out this little flame? Why keep the water in your little well? Why do you not use it to quench the fire?"

Then victorious Hanuman heard the great sage and understood through wisdom. He put his tail into his mouth and held it there, pressing air through his nose. The fire went out as he wished by the clever device of the ascetic's wisdom. When it was done, he bowed his head in reverence at the sage's lotus feet, took leave of the renowned hermit, and resolved to fly across the sea.

He turned toward Hemtiran, aiming for the great mountain peak. He flew swiftly through the sky and came down on the surface of the mountain.

When he arrived, he told Angkhot and splendid Chomphuphan the whole affair: how he had met the queen, and how he had burned Lanka city.

Then the two renowned monkeys, together with all the monkey troops, heard Hanuman's words. Each praised him with delight: "He has not failed to be the highest soldier of the Avatara. He has completed every royal task." They sat talking together until the sun bent behind the mountain edge. Then the three wise lords and all the soldiers slept.

Lanka Restored

Then the ten-faced yaksha remained on the peak of Sattana mountain and looked out over Lanka city. He saw the fire blazing bright, burning throughout the yaksha city until all was consumed by flame. The asura thought: "The great city of Lanka was built by Brahma in the Akanittha heaven for my powerful grandfather. It was wondrously beautiful, surpassing Indra's city. I must tell all the gods to come down and manifest the great city again, like the Brahma heaven in the sky." Having thought this, he commanded the yaksha ministers: "Go find the gods. Invite them to come down here."

Then Paowanasun the yaksha received the command of the world-ruling lord, raised joined hands, and flew away.

When he reached the realm of heaven, he told the gods great and small: "The crown of victorious Lanka, the lord of earth, has sent me up. He invites all you blessed ones to Sattana mountain. Come together, all gods. Do not delay; hurry now."

Then the gods of every order, together with the lord of a thousand eyes, learned that Thotsakan the asura had commanded them to be summoned. Each was frightened and trembling. They left their shining jeweled mansions and flew down.

When they reached Sattana peak, they descended from the sky and sat in order before the demon king.

Then the wise ten-headed lord saw the gods and Makhawan arrive there, and he was glad. He spoke gracious words: "Look, gods great and small. Now mighty Lanka city has suffered disaster by fire. Since I rely on your powers, I have invited every order of you to come down. Help build the royal city so that it may be secure and lasting."

Then the lord of Mount Meru and all the hosts of gods heard the demon king's fair words. Unable to resist and having no choice, they accepted his command. The gods and their retinues flew to Lanka.

When they arrived in the middle of the city, the thousand-eyed lord of Trayastrimsha gave a divine command that the asura city be manifested.

Then all the gods received the command of Hatsanai, the great lord, and divided their duties in a busy rush.

Phra Phirun poured down a great rain, streaming and extinguishing every remnant of fire throughout the victorious city of the asuras. Phra Phai carried ash, charcoal, and dust, blowing them down into the river current. The ground was level and without stain, fragrant as perfume. Wisnukam the divine craftsman manifested the city and royal precinct: battle-towers, ramparts, walls, gateway pavilions, parasols, flags, and splendid banners; palaces, residences, and guard-halls, all shining with the nine great gems; chariot sheds, elephant halls, and horse stables, all completed by the gods' power.

When the city had been built, the thousand-eyed lord and all his retinue returned to their heavenly mansions.

Then Thotsakan the yaksha, when the gods had created the city and gone back, led his solar-line queen, the beautiful ladies, and the inner attendants great and small onto a shining jeweled pavilion and floated by asura power.

The demon soldiers surrounded him densely, coming by the path of the sky. They circled the royal city and admired the demons' city.

He saw a city like the city of Brahma. The walls were all made of assembled gems. The battle-towers stood beautifully in rows, with elegant maidens placed between the battlements. Tiers of parasols were set in shining order, banners planted in every opening. The gemmed gates shone brilliantly, and the surrounding roads were laid out in handsome order. The palace gleamed; the royal court and parade-ground were beautiful; the seats seemed cool and dripping with gems. The three-spired palace was splendid, with four porticoes like a golden heavenly mansion. Garudas stood proud, and nagas towered in the sky. Its five peaks flashed before the eye; the roof leaves were gemmed and mingled with gold. The finials curved delicately into the heavens; the window tiers shone; the balustrades were all coral-gems. In all three worlds nothing equaled its grandeur.

While admiring the city, Thotsakan drove the pavilion circling and turning. By demon power he descended to a radiant golden landing.

He invited both chief queens and the beautiful women to proceed gracefully up into the jeweled palace.

He lowered himself upon the jeweled throne, shining with the nine gems, lovely as powerful Brahma descending from the clouds. Then he gave a royal command to the yaksha ministers: "I will celebrate the city as a great auspicious rite. For seven nights and seven days, announce it everywhere. Feed the troops and soldiers; let nothing be lacking."

Then Paowanasun the great received the command of the royal crown, bowed, and left the royal hall.

When he arrived, he ordered every diligent demon officer in every bureau and division according to the demon king's command. Notices were given everywhere in a commotion.

Then the yaksha performers, when the appointed auspicious day arrived, performed noisily throughout the city. Khon, lakhon, Mon dance, Thepthong dance, acrobats, tightrope walkers, Javanese kris dancers, Mongkholum and Kula stick-play, weapon displays, and buffalo-stabbing puppet-play all performed in a busy spectacle.

Then the people of the city, women and men of every rank, young and old, children and little girls, learned that the city was being celebrated. Each rejoiced in happiness. They dressed themselves, powdered their faces, put oil in their hair, and invited one another to go see.

Some walked, some stood, some sat. They crowded thickly, struck and shoved one another, and many laughed and cheered in delight. Men and women throughout the city were absorbed in pleasure.

Then the royal cooks and kitchen women prepared food in a busy rush: roast and fried elephant and buffalo, strong liquor and victory drink, sweet dishes, savory dishes, and roasted pig. When everything was complete, they shouldered and carried it onward in rows.

When they arrived, they set out tables and trays thickly with fish and meat. Jars and pots of liquor filled the victorious royal court.

Then the asuras great and small drank liquor and ate side-dishes in confusion. Drunk and senseless, some danced, some moved to music, and some clapped noisily. The whole city resounded, and the asuras rejoiced.

Then Thotsakan, lord of the yaksha solar line, when the city celebration was completed by the power of his merit, enjoyed royal majesty in happiness, full as a heavenly realm. Surrounded by attendants, beautiful in form beyond comparison, he entered the bedchamber at night and lay on the shining couch with lovely Lady Montho. The demon lord was happy and content.

Hanuman Reports to Rama

Then bold Hanuman, the great soldier, at daybreak when dawn-light cleared, spoke to the king of birds: "Remain here in peace. I ask leave to go attend radiant Phra Chakra." Having given his instruction, he raised the army and quickly descended from the mountain.

Then Phra Narai of the solar line, bearer of the bow, after sending the three monkeys to learn news of the lady in Lanka, stayed behind doing nothing but lamenting in thought. The powerful lord counted the days and waited. The agreed time was nearly complete, but he still did not see them return with news. His heart was fearful and without happiness; he suffered and burned as if scorched by flame. The more he thought, the more he was troubled. When the bright sun had gone beyond the mountain and the sky was spread with stars, with the moon shining clear, he proceeded gracefully into the golden pavilion.

He reclined on the couch, laid his arm across his brow, and thought of chief queen Sida. His breast burned as if with the fire at the end of an age. "Alas, by now, jewel of my eyes, you must be suffering almost to death. You had never seen the demon hosts; heart of my city, you must be frightened. Alone, you must be crying out in fear, empty and lonely in spirit, waiting for me and not seeing me come. You must be sorrowing at every hour. If the three lords have met you and told you my message, young garland of beauty, you will find relief from grief and longing. Ah, my breast, this is pitiful. The sorrow is grievous. Is it right that my one wife should be parted from my breast and fall into enemy hands?" He lamented for the beautiful lady, pressed his face to the pillow, and fell asleep.

When the last watch of night had passed, birds called brightly, crying out to urge sunrise. The lord awoke from sleep. He invited Phra Lak, his beloved younger brother, with ministers and attendants on left and right, left the golden pavilion, and went to bathe in the river.

The two kings bathed and cleansed themselves in the river at the foot of the splendid mountain. The cool clear water refreshed the body like the waters of Sithandorn. The sand shone with nine gems, glittering brightly. Lotuses lifted delicate stems; ripe pods and young pods mingled together. Some flowers had just emerged from the water; others opened to receive the sun's light. Bees whirred and circled, tasting the flowers' fragrance. The wind blew softly, carrying the scent of excellent lotus pollen. Fish surfaced and spouted water, swimming together in pairs and grazing on river-moss. Fallen blossoms drifted along the flowing stream. As they admired these things, the two bathed pleasantly in the watercourse.

Then the brave son of the Wind, together with Angkhot and Chomphuphan, led their monkey followers by hidden forest paths. They made for the bathing-place at the mountain stream, marked the forest road and the place where they had rested overnight, and hurried onward.

When they reached the golden royal pavilion, they learned that the lord had gone down to bathe in the river, and they went to attend him at the water.

Each one bowed his head in reverence to the bow-bearing lord of the three worlds. They crouched before the monkey host, waiting to hear the king's command.

Then the lord who destroys the three worlds saw the three wise lords come to attend at his lotus feet, and he rejoiced. He came up from the bathing place with radiant Phra Lak, stood in the middle of the army, and asked by command: "Did you three lords reach Lanka and meet Sida or not? What was the road like? I have waited with fixed heart every night and day."

Then Hanuman, strong and bold, received the command of the Garuda-borne lord, paid homage, and reported the matter: "The road to the demon city was hard, crossing mountains and forest paths. We met the asura Paklanan and the heavenly woman named Butsamali, who showed the way across the waters until we came to the hermitage of the rishi. At Hemtiran mountain we met powerful Sampathi, elder brother of the bird Sadayu, whose body had no feathers. When he learned that we were soldiers of the lord, he was glad and called out together with us. His feathers grew back, and by the glory of Phra Chakrakrit he was freed from the curse of the Sun. He flew and showed the important passage to the island realm of Lanka. Your servant went alone in secret and hid in the demon's garden. Just then Thotsakan came out and pleaded with the queen. She had no affectionate heart for him; she was angry and rebuked the yaksha. When he returned into the city, the queen tied her neck to die. I ran in and untied her, presented the cloth and ring, and gave the message. Your monkey servant reported everything down to the burning of Lanka's royal city."

Then the solar-line lord Phra Narai heard the son of Phra Phai, and the sky-passing king grew angry like kindled fire. He stamped his foot and gave a royal command: "Look at this, Hanuman, skilled in battle. I sent you, monkey lord, only to learn news of the lady. Why did you act in arrogance, kill the yaksha lineage and the demon armies, and burn the demons' city? My chief queen remains in the hands of that deluded one. If he grows angry and kills her, her life will end. I intend to fight the yakshas; but if I lose my beloved wife, the height of my compassion, then my suffering will deepen a hundred thousand times. What plan would you make then?"

Then bold Hanuman, the great soldier, heard the lord's command and felt his heart burn as if touched by poisoned fire. He bowed down and answered: "The fault of exceeding the royal command deserves the ending of life. May the powerful lord show mercy. When I fought the demons, I told them I was a wild monkey, wandering alone in play, with no lineage or clan. If Thotsakan were to kill the queen, I ask permission that Your Majesty destroy this monkey's life to its end."

Then wise Phra Chakri heard Hanuman's words and spoke by royal command to the ministers: "Look, lords of Khitkhin and monkey kings on left and right. The son of the Wind has exceeded the royal command. What should be said of this fault?"

Then the monkey kings great and small heard the royal word, paid homage, and answered: "The son of Phra Phai acted without restraint and transgressed the royal order. The penalty reaches the end of life. Sky-passing lord, please show mercy. Grant pardon for now; do not yet destroy his body. There is still war ahead, according to the monkey's promise."

Then the radiant lord of the three worlds heard the monkey kings and ministers, and their words were like heavenly water mixed into his heart. They agreed with his spirit. He gave Hanuman the cloth used after bathing as a reward there in the midst of the monkeys.

Then bold Hanuman, skilled in war, received the bathing-cloth of the four-handed lord, raised it to his head, and sighed in thought: "All that I did was done from honest loyalty. I did not care for my own life. Proud in heart, I did not think or consider. I saw wrong as right through delusion and nearly lost my life. Who now will count me as a brave man? I am wretched and beyond measure. All this is because of my own fortune; whom can I blame for good or bad? It is a loss, though I have great power. My heart is hurt beyond counting."

Then Phra Kritsanurak, royal lord, when this was finished, proceeded back to the splendid pavilion.

He lowered himself upon the throne, surrounded by ministers and brave soldiers who joined their hands and bowed at his lotus feet, beautiful as hosts of gods attending Phra Itsara on great Mount Kailasa. He spoke graciously and consulted the monkey ministers: "Now Hanuman has returned with the story of splendid Sida. It is proper that we raise the army and go to the city of Lanka."

Then renowned Chomphuphan bowed to receive the command, put his head to the king's feet, and reported: "There is a mountain directly opposite the island of Lanka, named Khanthakala, high and great, standing by the edge of the ocean. It is lasting strategic ground. May the crown of the earth raise the war-troops and set camp at the foot of that great mountain. There we can attack the enemies."

Then the lord Phra Harirak Chakrakrit heard Chomphuphan and found the thought fitting. The powerful lord commanded: "Look, son of the Sun. Arrange the army divisions on left and right. We will raise the army and set the royal pavilion at Khanthakala mountain."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, splendid monkey, received the command of the earth-ruling lord, raised joined hands, and went out.

For the vanguard he appointed Nilanon as great commander over ten oceans of troops. For the support army, powerful Angkhot commanded ten oceans of monkeys. For the royal guard, bold Hanuman commanded ten oceans of battle-skilled soldiers. The main army was densely ordered with twenty oceans of troops. For the clerk and staff corps, battle-skilled Nilaphat commanded ten oceans of brave troops. The Kongkhan division of ten oceans was under powerful Nilrat's command. The rear guard was commanded by Nilek with seven oceans of warriors. The ground was filled in ranks, and the sound shook everything in uproar.

Then Phra Chakkarat, radiant like a gem, with the younger brother who shared his life, proceeded to bathe in the water.

The two kings bathed and cleansed themselves, fragrant with perfumes. They put on jeweled lower garments; the borders were patterned with dancing kinnari. Phra Hariwong wore a divine robe bright green like young banana leaves, and Phra Lak wore a black robe ornamented with gold Garuda patterns. They wore fluttering side-cloths, fitted upper garments, breast ornaments, chains, armlets shaped with gold serpents, jeweled rings, glittering crowns, great earrings, and gemmed ornaments. Flower garlands hung from them, blossoms adorned their hair, and their hands held the bow. They were beautiful as Brahma and Amarin coming toward the army.

At the auspicious time, when the sun gave leave, the gongs were struck. The great army shouted in thunder and set out from Khanthamat mountain, monkeys crowding densely together.

Drums and gongs answered the pipes; the soldiers' noise filled the mountains. Dust darkened the sky as they traveled and camped through the forest.

On the outside they set the army in ordered ranks like diamond walls and sword-walls. They dug a moat around it with a raised bank, and set up the golden royal pavilion. They made front and rear royal halls, jeweled landings, great and small seats, sword-guards' quarters, palace guards' quarters, inner police posts, and the ground for reviewing the monkey army. Halls for the councillors stood proudly; the royal court was spread with soft sand. Forts, stockades, and ornamental flags were set in rows, all completed according to the king's command.
