Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the thirty-seventh สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Thotsakan's ominous dream, Phiphek's truthful interpretation and counsel to return Sida, Thotsakan's rage and banishment of Phiphek, Phiphek's farewell to Trichada and Benchakai, his crossing to Rama's camp, his oath before Rama, Sukhrip's acceptance of him as a companion, the monkey army's display of power, and Phiphek's detection of a disguised demon spy.

Translation

Thotsakan's Dream

Then Thotsakan the yaksha enjoyed happiness every day on the mighty island-city of Lanka. He possessed fourfold armies and countless riches, attendants, and splendor. By his power he had subdued the whole of the three worlds. He was the greatest of the yaksha solar line, surpassing all others. One hundred and one asura kings came each year to offer tribute. At night he entered the bedchamber with Montho, his chief queen and beloved, and in the radiant jeweled room the demon king drifted into sleep.

When the last watch of night had passed and the moonlight shone bright, the cause of his approaching ruin produced a wondrous dream.

He woke startled from the couch, frightened and thinking about the dream. At dawn, when the sunlight appeared, the demon bathed in the sea, adorned himself with royal ornaments, bright and shining, and walked gracefully out to the radiant royal hall.

He lowered himself onto the throne, bright with gems of many colors, with asura ministers, solar-line lords, poets, and astrologers gathered around him, beautiful as stars surrounding the moon in the sky. Then he gave a royal command to Phiphek the demon lord: "Near dawn tonight a dream came to me. I saw a great fierce vulture, its whole body and feathers shining white, fly from the east, displaying power like a royal bird. It crossed the great river and hovered before the royal court. It met a strong black vulture that came from the west. They fought in the middle of the sky. The brave black vulture lost the fight, fell to the earth, and could no longer fly. It rolled and struggled until life ended, and then changed into the form of an asura. Then I saw him set a coconut-shell lamp filled with resin-oil and a wick in my hand. There was also one fierce woman who ran in and lit the fire. The oil dried up, the wick flared, and the shell burned, with fire clinging to my hand. The pain of flame burned through my whole body. Is this dream good or bad?"

Then wise Phiphek considered the dream and trembled in heart. He sighed and thought: "It is a pity for the demon realm, delightful as the Tusita heaven. It will be shattered by enemies who come from the east." Having thought this, he raised joined hands, bowed to his elder brother, and reported: "In the dream, the coconut shell is mighty Lanka city. The wick is Your Majesty. The oil is the royal kin, great and small. The blazing fire that spreads is lovely Lady Sida. The woman who ran in and lit the fire is Nang Sammanakkha. The white vulture that flew in is Phra Rama Chakri. The black vulture is Your Majesty, radiant one of the Brahma line. You will fight in battle against the husband of beautiful Sida. This dream does not show stability. All Lanka's realm will burn with distress, and the asuras and yakshas will bury their faces and cry for one another."

Then the twenty-armed lord heard this as if someone had struck and cut him. His heart shook with fear, and he thought in anguish. Then he gave a solemn command: "You who share my lineage and life, the omen is inauspicious. By what offering or rite can the evil be averted so that prosperity and safety will remain? Think quickly of a way to turn this aside and free us from the stain of danger."

Then Phiphek, lord of the yaksha solar line, heard the royal words, bowed his head with joined hands, and answered: "In the scriptures there is no name for a rite to avert such a fate. To turn aside danger and preserve life can be done only through truth and righteousness, by holding firmly to integrity. Stand within the ten royal virtues. Quench the deluded mind and desire. Do not be confused by greed or by the taste of love. Break the bond of passion. Send Lady Sida back to her husband. Then all danger and harm will end, and war can be stopped. Your Majesty, strong in power, is not lacking in chief queens and beautiful women. If you desire closeness and delight, by royal merit you can have heavenly nymphs. Do not cling to a woman who already has a husband."

Phiphek Is Banished

Then the ten-headed yaksha heard his younger brother's words and grew angry like the fire at the end of an age. His ten mouths roared and shouted, shaking the palace: "Look at this base creature! Arrogant and bold in speech. You do not live in gratitude; you despise me, your elder brother. It was wasted effort that I raised you and loved you like my own eyes and heart. I thought that, born from the same womb, you would share suffering and heat with me. I did not know you were wicked and ruinous, turning into a companion of enemies. You would have me send beautiful Sida to radiant Phra Rama. You dare to say this, as if I had no power."

Then Phiphek the yaksha saw his elder brother's anger burn like the fire that ends the age. Fear overwhelmed his thought, as if his life were about to end. He folded his hands and bowed, then reported: "This younger brother is loyal and devoted. I do not think of you merely as an elder brother; I honor you like a victorious father who raised my head from earlier days. I interpreted the dream because I thought it would give solid counsel. I did not betray your lotus feet or join the foolish enemies. May Your Majesty have no suspicion of me, your servant beneath your splendid feet. I speak by truthful words. Lord of the earth, show mercy."

Then Thotsakan the yaksha heard his younger brother's words as if a weapon had stabbed his ears. He sprang to his feet, stamped, and shouted like thunder: "Do not dress up your words, unrighteous one. We are no longer brothers from this day. You exalt Rama and Lak above the yaksha line, saying that I am base and bad. Do not remain in the demon city." Speaking so, he snatched out his sword, gnashed his teeth, and lifted it to kill him. He leapt down from the jeweled Surakan throne and lunged after his younger brother.

Then Phiphek the yaksha was terrified that his life would end. He dodged the asura in confusion, hid behind Intharachit, and cried out begging for his life while shaking. When his elder brother chased close after him, he ran to Kumbhakan. The solar-line kin, ministers, and yaksha soldiers ran into one another, senseless, noisy, stumbling and crawling in panic.

Then the brave-hearted ten-headed lord did not cut him down. Instead the demon king ordered the ministers: "Seize his royal wealth and all the marks of rank. Drive him from the city, so the vile one gets what he deserves. As for Trichada, his wife, make her a serving woman and have her attend Lady Sida in the pleasure garden."

Then bold Paowanasun bowed to receive the royal order and led Phiphek, demon lord, out.

Then Phiphek the yaksha walked after the great minister, grieving and lamenting: "Alas, at this time I have no fault. In truth I have acted with gratitude in every way. Is it right that I have come to such humiliation? It was wasted effort to know the three Vedas and mantras, for I cannot save my own life. I seem like a base and wretched outcaste. I did not see the matter coming to this." Thinking so, he sighed. Tears washed the yaksha's face. Head bowed, he walked toward his dwelling.

When he arrived, he embraced his beloved wife, held her close, and comforted her spirit. In deep grief he sobbed and lamented: "Alas, jewel of my eyes, what karma has struck us? We must be separated and parted, forced far apart though we love one another. Because the demon king, crown of Lanka's realm, had a ruinous dream, I interpreted its good and evil. Out of gratitude I spoke by truthful righteousness to help preserve the yakshas' lives and prevent danger. Instead he grew angry and would have killed me. He ordered my royal wealth and rank seized, and drove me out of the royal city. As for you, young garland, he has given you to Lady Sida. From today I will vanish from your sight. How could I return and see your face? I will suffer every hour, feeding only on tears." As he wept, he embraced his beloved child, looked on her face, kissed and cherished her. He told mother and daughter to try to care for each other. Having said this, the demon grieved.

Then Trichada the yaksha lady, chief queen, and her daughter Benchakai learned the matter. Mother and daughter were pierced with sorrow and distress, as if Death had come to destroy their lives. The shining women embraced his feet and wept.

His beloved wife said: "Alas, powerful lord, whose grace has sheltered my head. I was happy every day and night. Is it right, lord of the earth, that you should go away? I, your servant, am helpless and without kin. To whom can I turn my face for refuge? My heart will be bruised and wounded, far from the feet of the lord of earth." Benchakai said: "Alas, royal father, you have protected my head from before. Your goodness is deeper and broader than the ocean; morning and evening you taught your beloved child. Left behind, I will have only grief and separation, like a broken breast. I used to see your face; now I will not see it. Your beloved child may lose her life." Trichada said: "Alas, my heart. Your Majesty used to live in peace, with women, attendants, and retinue gathered in the moon-bright palace. I served at the feet of my royal husband. Now you will vanish from sight, like the sun turning beyond great Meru." The daughter said: "Alas, father. Former karma has struck us. You will go away from your child, and I have not repaid the grace with which you raised me." The three royal ones sorrowed in love, lamenting in grief, each overcome as if sense would leave them.

Then the yaksha ministers who had come to seize the asura's wealth each made inventories and checked them against one another.

The royal gear and splendid dress, silver, gold, garments, every kind of jewel, ring, utensil, attendant, slave, and servant were packed in chests and carried into the great royal treasury. Some led Lady Trichada away to be a servant of Lady Sida.

When this was finished, Paowanasun told Phiphek the yaksha: "Your Majesty is wise. Why suffer such sorrow? Please leave the demon city according to the yaksha king's order. Do not let the night pass, or I will suffer punishment."

Then Phiphek of the solar line sighed in grief and turned to look at Benchakai. Tears streamed from his eyes. In deep distress he came down from the shining jeweled palace and turned along the road.

Then the women and men of the city, when they saw Phiphek the asura walking alone, were filled with sorrow. They looked at him and pitied him; the demons could not hold back their tears. Some raised their hands and beat their breasts in lament, and the whole royal city resounded.

Then Phiphek the yaksha, after leaving the royal city, grieved and suffered in heart: "Alas, poor me. To whom can I turn and live? Whichever solar-line lord I might seek as refuge is under Thotsakan's power. From now on I will endure suffering, losing happiness and all delight. I may die in the wilderness. It was wasted to be born a king of the vast Brahma solar line; I am like an outcaste by birth." Lamenting, the demon lord went on.

When he reached the ocean shore, he stopped at the foot of a mountain and examined his age and horoscope. Jupiter's motion had come against the moon: it caused exile from his homeland, but not the time of death. He would obtain an important protector, and that protector was Phra Chakra. Phra Chakra was encamped on the northern shore. Phiphek's heart filled with joy. Fixing his aim on Khanthakala mountain, he turned and flew across the sea.

He flew swiftly through the sky, crossed the great broad ocean, saw the sandy rise beside the forest edge, and came down on the earth.

Alone he struggled through the forest, a harsh road crossing streams, ravines, and pools. In great hardship and distress, the demon lord lamented: "Alas, it was wasted that I was born in the radiant Brahma line, descended from Thao Sahabodi. At this time I have no refuge in anyone. By the power of my honest truth, since I envy no relatives or friends, may the gods move my heart so that I meet the four-handed lord." Lamenting, he turned toward Khanthakala peak, winding through the forest along the road.

Phiphek Seeks Rama

Then the monkey vanguard took turns patrolling by order, moving along the forest path.

They glanced out and saw an asura walking in grief, crying, and calling on the name of the lord of earth. Astonished, they ran in a crowd.

Some surrounded him front and back, crowding on left and right. Some seized the asura's shoulders and arms. The monkeys dragged him away without mercy.

Then Phiphek the yaksha was startled, his whole body stunned, and he asked: "Look, monkey soldiers, where are you dragging me by the arm? You are coarse, strong, and bold. What wrong have I done? Tell me."

Then Nilek, the brave chief, heard this and answered: "Hey, unrighteous asura. We are soldiers of the lord Avatara. Now the Garuda-bearing lord has raised his armies and troops to cross to the island of Lanka and destroy the foolish yakshas. You are one of the asuras, so we will seize and take you."

Then wise Phiphek heard the name of the lord of earth and was glad, for it fulfilled his thought. He spoke pleadingly: "Look, soldiers of Phra Chakrakrit. I am not an enemy. I have come seeking him with an honest heart. Help bring me in to attend the lord of the three worlds. I will be a servant beneath his feet until life is ended."

Then Nilek, the chief, heard clearly and had no doubt. He brought Phiphek to the army assembly.

When they arrived, Nilek bowed to the radiant son of the Sun and reported what had happened: "I found this asura, and I captured him."

Then renowned Sukhrip glanced and saw the asura. He asked: "Hey, yaksha, where is your home and city? What is your name, lineage, and clan? Why are you sorrowing and grieving? Why do you name Phra Hariwong, lord of the line of Isuan? What do you desire, demon, that you do not fear death?"

Then Phiphek the yaksha heard and answered: "I am an asura. My name is Phiphek the demon. I am the younger brother of Thotsakan the yaksha, born of the same father and mother, and I live in Lanka city. The demon king had an evil dream and had me interpret the yaksha dream. He grew angry, seized my wealth and rank, and drove me from the victorious city. Thinking carefully, I saw no one who could be my refuge. So I came crying in search of the lord of earth, resolved to become a servant of Phra Chakri."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, splendid monkey, questioned and pressed the asura until every possible suspicion was exhausted. Then he led bold Hanuman, the eighteen crowned commanders, Nilaphat, Angkhot, and Chomphuphan, and they crawled in to attend the four-handed lord.

They bowed their heads and reported to the bow-bearing king of the solar line: "Today the monkey soldiers were patrolling the forest and captured a demon asura. His name is Phiphek the yaksha, younger brother of Thotsakan the asura. His elder brother drove him from Lanka. He has come intending to be Your Majesty's servant. If Your Majesty does not show mercy, the asura will offer up his life."

Then Phra Kritsanurak heard the son of the Sun. The righteous king gave a royal command: "Nilek, go back out and bring that Phiphek the yaksha here before the pavilion. I will look at the demon lord's bearing."

Then wise Nilek received the command of the Avatara, bowed at the lotus feet, and went out.

He told Phiphek the demon lord, "Phra Narai, bearer of the discus, summons you." Speaking so, he took the asura by the hand and immediately led him in to attend.

Then Phiphek the yaksha bowed his head and raised joined hands, waiting to hear the royal command.

Then the lord who destroys every realm of the three worlds carefully looked at the demon lord and asked: "Look, Phiphek the demon. I am doubtful about what you say. Brothers born of the same womb and heart have long loved one another. The matter seems too small for such punishment. Or have you contrived some trick and deceit? Speak only the truth."

Then wise Phiphek heard the lord of earth's words, and they struck his heart like nectar. He bowed his head in homage and answered at the lotus feet: "Your servant has not betrayed anyone, nor come by crooked trickery. Thotsakan does not stand in righteousness. He is deluded, wicked, and envious. He had an evil dream, and according to the texts I interpreted it to mean that his life would end. I told him to send splendid Lady Sida and offer her at Your Majesty's feet. Instead he grew angry and would have killed me; he seized my royal rank and drove me from the victorious city. I have no refuge who can preserve my life, and I have no great power or magic. I know only the three Vedas and astrology. Therefore I set my heart on becoming a servant beneath the feet of the lord of the three worlds until life ends. Sky-passing king, please show mercy."

Then Phra Chakkarat, radiant like a gem, heard Phiphek the asura and sat still in thought. Then he spoke sweetly to the ministers great and small: "Now this asura has fled danger and come intending to entrust his life. Is it proper to keep this demon lord, or can he be kept? Speak quickly. He knows astrology, but he is also Thotsakan's younger brother."

Then Sukhrip, son of the Sun, and all the monkey kings heard Phra Chakri's command. Each bowed at the splendid lotus feet, and they consulted at once, carefully according to royal law.

When they were finished, they bowed and reported to the great solar-line king: "Phiphek the demon has given a steady account from the beginning. It seems true that he wronged his elder brother, feared death, and fled here. The asura is honest and sincere; he is not speaking by deceit. Even so, he belongs to the enemy side, so we cannot freely trust that he is good. It is proper that he make a truth-oath under Phra Chakri's feet. Then he can be used in war. What is there to fear from the yaksha? If he is not loyal and devoted, then destroy his life. But if he is honest and straight, in the war ahead, if anything becomes difficult, we can ask the asura about it."

Then Phra Hariwong, radiant in auspicious light, heard the ministers' counsel as if heavenly water had been mixed into his heart. He gave a royal command to Phraya Sukhrip, the great soldier: "Take the victorious Brahmastra arrow, wash it with water, and set it as witness. Then have Phiphek the asura make his oath and declaration according to ancient custom before all the soldiers."

Then the son of the Sun received the command of the Garuda-borne lord, bowed, and immediately invited the arrow. He set it upon a jeweled tray, raised it above his head, and led Phiphek the asura to the monkey assembly.

They placed pure clear perfumed water and washed the lord's Brahmastra arrow. Thotsakan's powerful younger brother raised joined hands and made his oath.

Then Phiphek the yaksha bowed his head with joy and swore: "May the hosts of gods and shining immortals who dwell in every place, in all six heavens of mansioned sky, be divine witnesses this time. If I am not straight toward the splendid royal feet of Phra Narai, if I join the foolish enemies with a crooked mind or a trick, may this powerful arrow kill my life." Then he received the oath-water, raised it above his head, and drank it.

Then Sukhrip, lord of Khitkhin city, when the asura's oath was finished, had no remaining suspicion in his spirit. He spoke graciously: "Look, Phiphek the yaksha. You are the younger brother of Lanka's lord, born from the excellent Brahma solar line. I am the younger brother of Pali, offspring of the great Sun. I rule victorious Khitkhin city with wealth and rank equal to yours. We both serve beneath the dust of the feet of the lord of the three worlds. We both stand in truth and righteousness, and that honor will last for ages. Let us serve his lotus feet in war until our bodies end. It is proper that we be companions sharing life and keeping truth together."

Then wise Phiphek heard the monkey lord and rejoiced as if he had gained the Tusita heaven. He answered graciously: "Look, noble and splendid lord. Everything you have said makes me deeply glad. It is not wasted that I came intending to serve beneath the feet of the discus-bearing lord. We two should hold loving friendship, loyal and honest together."

Then wise Sukhrip and the younger brother of Lanka's lord each rejoiced. They swore truth together in the presence of the soldiers, becoming beloved companions sharing life, without desire, stain, or hidden anger.

Then Phiphek the yaksha looked at Phra Chakri's soldiers. They were all ranks of monkeys. Some adorned their bodies with great shining nine-gems; some had diamond fangs, chains, and earrings; all were monkeys of famed lineage. The eighteen crowned commanders were splendidly dressed, packed in ranked masses beyond counting. Phiphek asked Sukhrip, his life-companion: "The lord Narai intends to go to Lanka and destroy the base asuras. But Thotsakan's yakshas all have bold and mighty power. They have subdued the six heavens and the underworld. What power and glory do the monkeys beneath the royal feet possess? I have seen only brave Hanuman's power when he went to Lanka."

Then renowned Sukhrip heard and answered: "The armies of the two cities are all able to reach the sun and pluck stars and moon from their constellations. As for Chomphuphan the minister and fierce Hanuman, supreme Lord Isuan bestowed a blessing on them. Their power is like the sun, and whoever destroys their lives does not finish them. The monkey kings and all the monkey troops, great and small, are famous for powerful magic. All have hearts hardy and enduring. Even if they die, when Phra Phai's wind touches the hair of their bodies, every one rises again and returns to fight the enemy. What can asura yakshas do against the splendid monkeys' power? Why should you doubt? Phra Suli commanded that they be born." Having spoken, the two companions and all the monkey chiefs left the oath-place and went to the splendid pavilion.

Each bowed his head in homage to the bow-bearing lord of the three worlds, packed around him like stars surrounding the moon.

Then Phra Kritsanurak sat upon the shining jeweled seat in the radiant golden pavilion. He gave a royal command and asked Phiphek the demon lord: "How many soldiers are there in Lanka city? If we raise the army, attack, and press forward, can it be taken by force of power or not?"

Then Phiphek the yaksha heard the royal command, bowed at the feet, and reported: "The troops of Lanka city are beyond counting. They are more numerous than the monkeys in the victorious army, quick, expert, and skilled in war. They can all change bodies and vanish; they can go under the earth, fly in the sky, and walk the sea. To seize them by swift force is beyond planning. Since I have not yet seen the power of the brave monkey soldiers beneath the Avatara's feet, I do not know how to measure their strength against each other."

Then Phra Chakkarat, radiant like a gem, heard Phiphek the demon report on the asura army. He commanded the son of the bright Sun: "You, skilled and victorious one, lead the monkey ministers and soldiers out to the ocean-side rise. Have all the monkeys display their terrible power so Phiphek the asura can see the strength and glory of the monkey army."

Then war-skilled Phraya Sukhrip received the command, raised joined hands, and led them out.

When they reached the sandy rise beside the ocean with the soldiers great and small, the wise son of the Sun proclaimed to the troops: "Look, monkey kings and brave warriors, skilled in battle. Display your power so it spreads to the far edge of sky and earth."

Then the monkey kings, splendid ministers, and soldiers from both cities rejoiced, their thought fulfilled. They shouted together in a roar, the sound rising to Tusita. Each displayed power and manifested a different body.

Some flew through the sky and reached up to lift the sun. Some planted their feet on Mount Yukhonthon and stretched out their hands to tug Mount Meru. Some took jeweled heavenly mansions and set them on their monkey palms. Some slipped down into the earth and brought up the naga king.

Some became the wind at the end of the age, blowing through all ten directions. Some became stars falling in showers from the sky. Some plunged down into dark Agnirut and came up on Mount Meru's peak. Some made themselves four-faced and eight-armed, raising the surface of the earth.

Some walked on water, dived into the sea, parted its currents, and seized the fish Anon to ride. Some went to the Chimphali mansion and brought down the Garuda bird. Some scooped up the encircling mountain and flew upward through the sky. Some made thunder-cracks like the sound of heaven, and rain fell with a roaring din. Some tore loose mountains and threw them at one another; the stones burst apart everywhere, flashing across the upper sky, darkening and shaking the world.

Then Thotsakan the yaksha came out among his ministers to the Vejayanta lion-throne. He heard the thunderous sound; the world was dark everywhere, with flashes across the upper sky like storm-cloud and rain in roaring darkness. Stones floated down and fell scattered before the dais. Astonished, he looked for a long time, then ordered his minister Sukrasan: "This wonder today is strange. Why is there thunder in every direction? Go look and learn clearly what the cause may be."

Then Sukrasan, the senior minister, received the command of the lord of the three realms, bowed, and crawled out.

He looked throughout the eight directions, carefully glancing left and right, and saw the event on the eastern side. The asura changed his body by magic.

He turned his body into a hawk, strong as a royal bird. By his power he flew into the air and hurried across the great waters.

Coming near Khanthakala mountain, he saw the monkey soldiers great and small displaying their mighty power, shaking the world as if a final wind had arisen. Some wrenched up mountains and hurled them; they shattered and scattered through every place. A stone struck his wing, hurting him almost to death, and the demon lord fell at once.

He grew anxious and frightened of the splendid monkeys' power. "If I remain a hawk like this, I may not escape with my life. No, I must change again and make my body the form of a forest monkey." Having thought this, he recited a powerful spell, and the asura transformed his body.

When he had completed the spell three times, his body became a splendid monkey. He slipped in among the soldiers, and the asura ran in the crowd with them.

Then Phiphek of the solar line looked at the army of the righteous lord and saw its power surpass the world. His hair stood on end, and his grief eased into deep gladness. Smiling, he said: "Look, companion who shares my life. The asura hosts, the soldiers of Thotsakan the yaksha, even the best and most chosen of them, are to the weakest monkeys as earth is to sky. How could asuras stand against them? It is like comparing fireflies to the sun; they cannot be equal. But now a yaksha has changed his body and come disguised among the army." Speaking so, he hurried back to the golden pavilion.

When he arrived, he bowed his head and reported to the lord of earth: "Now an asura has come in disguise and slipped among the monkey soldiers."

Then Phra Narai, bow-bearing lord of the solar line, heard the younger brother of the twenty-armed king. The lord of earth gave a royal command: "You say the demon has changed himself and hidden among the monkey soldiers. If we are to capture the demon lord, how can his form be recognized?"

Then wise Phiphek joined his hands and reported: "It is the nature of asuras that no shadow follows their bodies, wherever they are among the yaksha hosts. They also do not blink their eyes, and this is stranger than the creatures of the earth."

Then Phra Hariwong, radiant in auspicious light, heard Phiphek the asura and gave a royal command: "Look, powerful son of the Wind, wise and brave one. Go capture that base asura and bring him here, so he can be exposed to our satisfaction."

Then bold Hanuman, the great soldier, received the command of the lord of the three worlds, bowed, and flew up into the clouds.

After that he informed his uncle: "Lord Phra Narai has sent me to capture the asura who has disguised himself among the army." Having spoken, he raised his joined hands in homage to the lord of Kailasa peak, recited a spell of shining power, and manifested his monkey body.

His body became as large as the encircling mountain, towering high and overhanging the sky. With one hand he covered the army, made the soldiers come out, and looked for the sign.
