This is the thirty-eighth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Hanuman's capture of Sukrasan, the spy's interrogation and punishment, Thotsakan's disguised visit to Rama's camp as the ascetic Kalisitthakhodom, Phiphek's report that the ascetic was Thotsakan, Thotsakan's plan to use Benchakai as a false dead Sida, Benchakai's visit to Trichada and Sida, and her transformation into Sida's likeness at Rama's bathing place.

Sukrasan Is Caught

Then Sukrasan, strong and powerful, saw the monkeys come out and inspect one another. He was startled; his body trembled and his senses failed. He hid and waited until the end, fixing his eyes for a chance to fly away. He circled in agitation several times and did not know how he could slip out.

Then bold Hanuman, the great soldier, saw that the last monkey was frightened and lurking, unwilling to come out. He examined him for the sign and saw clearly, just as Phiphek had said. With swift power he sprang and seized the asura.

He held him tight and did not release his hand. The monkey gripped his head. That form did not remain a forest monkey, but changed back into a demon. All the monkey soldiers, officers and common troops alike, shook with anger. They bound him, pummeled him, struck him, crowded around him, and dragged him away at once.

When they arrived, Hanuman bowed at the lotus feet and reported to radiant Phra Narai: "By Your Majesty's command to capture the asura, now we have obtained him."

Then the lord who destroys the three worlds heard the son of the Wind and rejoiced. The sky-passing king commanded the son of the Sun: "Question this base asura. He was bold and proud enough to disguise himself among the army. Who sent him? Who devised this? Why did he not fear our power?"

Then Phraya Sukhrip, splendid monkey, received Phra Chakri's royal command, raised joined hands, and went out.

He set out the questions and interrogated him: "What is your name, yaksha? Where do you live? Why did you change your body and come disguised among the great army? Did you not fear losing your life? Who planned this and sent you? Tell the truth. What did you want by this?"

Then Sukrasan the asura yaksha, fearing that his life would end, gave his account as it had happened: "Your servant's name is Sukrasan. My home is on the victorious island of Lanka, and I am a servant of Thotsakan the asura. Because stones flew and fell into the yaksha city, the demon king grew greatly suspicious and commanded me to come look. I changed my body into a hawk and flew here. I intended to make a record and learn whose army this was. The monkeys threw stones like a rainstorm. One struck my wing, and I could not endure the pain or fly any farther, so helplessly I fell. Then I changed into a monkey and hid my face among the troops. All of this now depends on your mercy. The penalty reaches the ending of life."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, splendid monkey, questioned the asura closely and learned every detail. He ordered monkey scribes to write down the words firmly. When this was finished, he hurried back to the splendid golden pavilion.

He bowed his head and reported to the great royal lord, crown of the world, that everything had been completed according to the demon lord's words, in the presence of the powerful soldiers.

Then Phra Narai Chakrakrit of the solar line learned that the ten-headed enemy had arranged for someone to come disguised among the army. He gave a royal command: "Consult together about the yaksha's penalty. What punishment should this Sukrasan receive?"

Then the monkey ministers great and small received the command of the lord of the three worlds, paid homage, and hurried out.

Together with the brave ministers, Chomphuphan laid out the counsel: "According to ancient royal law, if two enemies boldly enter an army in disguise and the troops capture them, one is punished and released, while the other is put to death and impaled before the army as public exposure, so that the penalty is answered. Sukrasan is of the enemy party, but he planned this alone and came alone in disguise. Killing him would bring no honor. It is fitting to spare the yaksha's life, but to whip him around the army, tattoo his forehead, and release him back to his lord."

Then Sukhrip, son of the Sun, when the counsel about the demon was finished, led them to attend Phra Chakri.

He bowed his head at the royal feet and reported to the radiant lord of earth the monkey ministers' counsel concerning the asura's penalty.

Then the lord who destroys the three worlds heard the ministers' counsel, and it agreed with the sky-passing king's heart. He gave a command to the great son of the Sun: "Do as the counsel has said, so that the asura receives what he deserves."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, splendid monkey, received Phra Chakri's command, raised joined hands, and went out.

He ordered the brave royal executioners: "Take this Sukrasan the yaksha, bind him, and carry out the royal penalty according to the righteous lord's command."

Then the diligent monkey executioners heard the son of the Sun, dragged the demon in, set up a stake, and put him in the stocks. They bound the yaksha by waist and feet, squeezed his temples and hands in confusion, and whipped him without mercy.

They tattooed a crow-foot mark on the yaksha's forehead. The skilled executioners then led the asura around in public exposure.

The herald Chamong struck a gong and proclaimed him around the great army. They beat him without pity and dragged him along noisily.

Then the mighty son of the Sun, when this was finished, ordered the asura released and let him go back to Lanka city.

Then Sukrasan the yaksha was glad when the monkeys released him. The asura flew across the ocean.

When he arrived, he went up to attend the lord of Lanka, bowed at his feet, and cried. He reported: "Your Majesty, powerful lord, sent me to see what had happened. So I changed myself into a hawk and flew toward the east. Crossing the great waters, I met a host of monkey attendants beyond counting, all brave and powerful in war. Each displayed magic strength, throwing mountains and peaks at one another. A broken stone flew straight into my wing, and I fell almost dead. Then by a trick I changed myself and slipped among them. The monkeys captured me and took me to the army camp and pavilion at great Khanthakala mountain. I saw Phiphek, Your Majesty's younger brother, siding with the enemy. The army-lord was Phra Rama. He ordered me thoroughly questioned, then punished, whipped, and almost killed before releasing me."

Thotsakan Visits Rama in Disguise

Then Thotsakan of the yaksha solar line learned that Phra Rama had raised an army and encamped at the river landing, and that Phiphek had gone to serve him. His heart burned like fire. His breast and mind were heavily troubled, and the asura sat thinking: "This one is likely to tell them everything. Therefore they were able to capture Sukrasan. If I leave matters long, there will surely be danger; he will pull out my entrails for the crows to eat. I must devise a trick to destroy the enemy completely and make them distrust that black-hearted Phiphek. If Phra Rama drives him from the pavilion, I will follow and kill him." Having thought this, he raised joined hands, and the demon recited a skilled spell.

His body changed into the form of a yogi, complete with offerings and ascetic gear. He marked himself with sacred powder and wore a sacred cord, like Brahma descending. In his left hand he held a staff; in his right he held a fan shielding his face. By his swift power he flew out from Lanka.

Fast as the wind, he aimed for great Khanthakala mountain. When he reached the ocean shore, he came down upon the earth. Then the yaksha thought wisely: "If I enter now, Phiphek the asura will likely know my trick, that I have changed myself into a forest ascetic. He will tell Phra Lak and Phra Rama, and the matter will be spoiled. I must bind his mind firmly so that he cannot speak." Having thought this, he recited a powerful spell according to asura doctrine.

When this was finished, he grasped his staff and shielded his face like a rishi. Pretending restraint of body and senses, he entered the place of the royal pavilion.

When he reached the front of the dais, he stood and glanced left and right. He saw the monkey ministers serving densely with joined hands. Each had a bold bearing, capable, fierce, and skilled in war. Phiphek and mighty Sukhrip sat before the monkey ministers. Anger burned in him like poison-fire; the more he thought, the more his yaksha heart tightened. He called out a blessing of well-being and asked: "Your Majesty has raised armies and come here. Where are you going? These are all forest-monkey ministers. This sight stirs doubt in my spirit."

Then wise Phra Chakri took him for a holy teacher, beautiful as Brahma in the sixteen heavens. The king was pleased by his restrained bearing. He spoke sweetly: "I have raised these ten armies to go kill Thotsakan and end the yaksha line, because he stole Lady Sida, my wife, and keeps her in his city. Where does Your Holiness dwell? What is your name, rishi? Since you have come to me, what business do you desire?"

Then Thotsakan, using that form, heard and answered: "This form dwells in the Himmaphan forest. My name is Kalisitthakhodom. I was walking meditation and have returned from heaven. I learned that Your Majesty, righteous lord, had raised monkey armies to cross over and make war in Lanka. Out of compassion, I have come to restrain you, bow-bearing king. The twenty-armed lord has power surpassing all the three worlds. He also has soldiers skilled in war, counted by oceans. If Your Majesty raises troops there, how can the asuras fear your hand? It is not as if the world has no other women, or the sky-passing king lacks queens. Even if you recover her, there will be stain; she may not escape dishonor. It is like a jewel that has fallen into a fire. Do not think it will be without fracture. Why follow her and bring useless trouble? Dismiss the armies and return to your city."

Then the world-ruling lord who destroys all realms heard and said: "Why speak like this, holy ascetic? Lovely Sida is Phra Lakshmi, a heavenly woman. Even if she fell into water or the fire at the end of an age, do not think she would be stained. Even if she were not that noble lady, but had sunk in rank until she were a servant, if I did not follow and destroy the asuras, my shame would be great. People would say I feared the demons, and all three worlds would mock me. What is that ten-faced one, or the yaksha armies in Lanka? They are like a herd of deer facing a bold lion. I will destroy them with my powerful arrow and end the clan of unrighteous yakshas."

Then the ten-headed ascetic heard Phra Rama's fierce words, and the demon answered: "I have spoken out of compassion. If you will not listen to me, the rishi, and insist on going to fight the asuras, then that is according to your thought." Speaking so, he glanced at his younger brother, his mind leaping with anger and agitation, wishing to kill him. But because Phiphek was close to Phra Rama, he was helpless. So he devised another trick and asked cunningly: "The senior monkey minister and the demon sitting before the army both look strange. What are their lineage and names? What are their home cities? How have they come to live with the king?"

Then the radiant lord of the three worlds heard and answered: "This asura is a native of Lanka. His name is Phiphek the demon, younger brother of Thotsakan the yaksha. His elder brother drove him from the city, and he came to rely on me, holy teacher. This monkey is Pali's younger brother, named noble Sukhrip, brave in heart. His elder brother broke an oath and seized lovely Lady Dara. My arrow destroyed that monkey's life and body. Sukhrip commands the army and serves me in loyalty."

Then Thotsakan in rishi form heard and pretended mercy: "How is this, powerful lord? You keep company with an asura and a monkey born from the same wombs as wrongdoers. Phiphek is of the enemy party, the close younger brother of Lanka's lord. Pali, Sukhrip's elder brother, lost his life when Your Majesty killed him. Would the younger brother love the sky-passing king more than his own brother? That would be wrong. Keeping the enemy's kin is like keeping a venomous serpent. Powerful lord, drive them far away from your lotus feet."

Then the lord who destroys all realms heard and gave a command: "Your speech is not righteous, holy teacher. Although Phiphek is the womb-brother of deluded Thotsakan, the friend and the elder brother have gone wrong; for that reason the demon turned his face and came to me, who am not his kin, because of the yaksha's honesty. As for powerful Phraya Sukhrip, Pali's younger brother, he too stands in lasting truth. The shining solar-line monkey and the asura are both great kings. There is nothing treacherous in them. They keep justice, gratitude, and knowledge of right and wrong. They are not corrupt, crooked men as the ascetic says."

Then the ten-headed yaksha in rishi form heard Phra Rama's command and answered: "I say this truly. It is not that I hate them. Since Your Majesty will not listen and will keep them, in time you will see good or evil. Even if you make war on the ten-headed yaksha, how will these monkey soldiers withstand asura power? They are suited only as food for demons to eat in sport. Your Majesty is wise; think carefully."

Then the splendid monkey kings heard the holy man's words and grew angry like the fire that ends the age. They gnashed their teeth, growled, and trembled with resentment. Their brows knotted, faces strained, and hands itched to strike and destroy him. But out of reverence for the royal feet, all the soldiers could do nothing. They each volunteered noisily before the king. Some said they would go seize Thotsakan and cut off his head. Some said they would raise Mount Meru and throw it down on Lanka city. Some said they would turn over the earth and kill the whole yaksha city. Some said they would bail out the waters and lead the monkey troops across. Some said they would scoop up Lanka in their hands, bring it away, and hurl it into the ocean so the army would have no hardship.

Then Phiphek the yaksha knew that Thotsakan the asura had changed into a yogi and come out. He wanted to report to the discus-bearing lord so the king would know this was the yaksha king, but he was under the spell and could not speak as he wished. His heart shook, his spirit fled, and he could not sit still. Fear, as if life would end, made him crawl close to the royal younger brother.

Then Thotsakan the yaksha in rishi form saw the monkey ministers each angry like doomsday fire. He slanted his eyes and looked at every group, all fierce in war. But base Phiphek was alarmed, as if he knew the matter: "He knows I have changed myself into a forest ascetic. The asura is frightened and crawling away. If he tells Phra Rama now, I will likely not escape with my life." Looking front and back, guarding himself and fearing the monkeys would kill him, he forced himself to speak calmly: "Sky-passing king, remain in lasting peace. The time is near sunset; I will take leave of Your Majesty first." Speaking so, he fixed his staff and hurried out on foot.

When he was out of the monkeys' sight, he displayed power and shook the earth, flying across the great ocean straight into victorious Lanka.

Then Phiphek of the yaksha solar line was glad when the ten-headed asura had gone from the pavilion. The magic that had struck him faded away. The asura bowed at the splendid feet and reported to Phra Harirak Chakri: "A moment ago, that was not a holy ascetic. It was Thotsakan using a trick, changing his body into a rishi. Because crooked-hearted Sukrasan returned and reported that the powerful lord had the soldiers display their power, and that he had found me beneath the royal feet, Thotsakan changed into a rishi to inspect the brave army. He meant to kill me, but the demon lord's wish did not succeed. When I would have reported this to Your Majesty, my companion recited a spell to bind my mind. My fault reaches the ending of life. Powerful lord, please show mercy."

Then Phra Narai of the shining solar line heard Phiphek the asura, and the king sat still in thought. "Ha, is this such a small matter? That Thotsakan could deceive and speak with me!" Thinking this, his heart tightened with anger, and the lord gave a command: "The ten-faced one used a trick and changed himself into a forest ascetic. I did not examine him and thought he was a yogi. Otherwise how could my splendid monkey troops have been burdened like this?" Having spoken, he proceeded into the splendid pavilion.

Benchakai Is Sent to Deceive Rama

Then the war-skilled ten-faced lord reached the city of Lanka and went up into the great palace.

He reclined on the couch with his arm across his brow, his yaksha mind hot with anger. He regretted the effort of going in disguise, hoping to cut off the war before it spread, for it had not fulfilled his thought. "What trick should I devise now? This human war is vast; it will surely come to the splendid city. The monkey ministers and armies all have power like doomsday fire. They are of Amarin's and the Sun's lineages, famous and brave. And that vile Phiphek, that base one, has gone to live with the human. He knows every reason and event and will tell the enemy everything. As for battle and war, devising how to fight will be difficult." He kept springing up and sitting down, unable to sleep. He sighed deeply in suffering, his mind burning as if touched by poison-fire until dawn shone in the sky.

Then he thought: "This war began because of love. I will have lovely Benchakai change into young Sida and pretend to be dead, floating at the bathing landing where Phra Rama usually goes to bathe. If he sees that the lady has died, the war will end and he will return." Having thought this, he bathed and dressed, shining like the moon. He went out to the inner royal hall, bright with gems and gold.

He lowered himself upon the jeweled throne beneath the shining white parasol, with all the palace women present. Then he commanded the asura women: "Hurry down and find lovely Benchakai, my beloved niece who shares my life. Bring her up to the royal hall."

Then the heavenly young asura women received the demon king's command, paid homage, and hurried away together.

When they reached the lady's dwelling, they raised joined hands and reported: "The lord of the three worlds sent us to invite Your Majesty."

Then young, beloved Benchakai learned that Thotsakan the demon king had summoned her by command, and she was frightened. Her face turned pale at once. Not knowing whether the matter was good or bad, she was afraid of danger and hurried away with the asura women.

When she arrived, she bowed her head at the demon king's feet. Fearful that death would come, the lovely one crouched and did not raise her face.

Then the ten-headed lord of the solar line saw beautiful Benchakai and gave a command: "Alas, my beloved niece, dear one of highest affection. All this is because ancient karma caused me to be angry with your father, who shares my blood. Though he had done no wrong, I punished him, seized his rank, and drove him from the city; he had to become a servant of the enemy. Now my anger is gone, and I think of him. My heart burns like fire. My pity is beyond measure, and I do not know what to do, because he lives with the enemies and I cannot bring him back. Therefore I have summoned you, my chief jewel of a niece, hoping you will change yourself into Sida. Beloved niece, go and pretend to be dead on the sandy landing at the bathing causeway. If Phra Rama sees you, he will think Sida has lost her life. He will grieve and lament in love, and likely his body and life will end. Only the monkey attendants will remain, and they will scatter and separate. If this succeeds as I think, when you return I will divide treasure for you, and your father too will regain his city and lasting rank."

Then lovely Benchakai heard this as if someone had cut off her arms and head. She bowed at his lotus feet and reported to the demon king: "Your servant is a woman. I do not know how I can deceive the enemy. It is as though all the men in Lanka are gone, so that I must harden my face and go. The monkey soldiers are packed through the army, and all who come are men. If anyone sees whether the matter is good or bad, the stain will never disappear. My life will not escape death; do not expect me to return."

Then King Thotsakan the yaksha comforted his royal niece: "Jewel of my eyes, do not be afraid. Those beast-born monkeys will not know the matter. You are clever and quick; what can they do to you? Do not doubt. Though you are a woman, you are greater than a man in cunning and bold stratagem. If you go, it will succeed as I wish. Niece, do not fear the enemies."

Then Benchakai the yaksha lady heard the royal speech and thought in her heart: "If I resist the command, I fear the proclaimed punishment will fall and end my life." At the limit of thought, she bowed and reported: "If Your Majesty sees that this will work, how can I oppose the royal command? But I have never seen the face of young Lady Sida. If I transform, the form will be wrong and not like the beloved chief queen. I ask leave to go look at Lady Sida's features."

Then the ten-headed yaksha heard this as if heavenly water had washed his body. He stroked the face and back of his beloved niece, delighted and content. Then he ordered the palace women: "Go tell the ministers to prepare and harness the royal chariot, with asura soldiers ready at the jeweled landing to receive the lovely lady."

Then the palace women on left and right received the command, took leave, and hurried out.

When they arrived, they gave the order to the senior minister to prepare the jeweled chariot according to the demon king's command.

Then the brave senior minister learned the royal order and hurried out in haste.

He arranged the asura demons by companies, inspected them together, and prepared the splendid royal chariot, waiting for the lady to come.

Then Benchakai the yaksha lady bowed to the asura king and came down from the victorious palace. She bathed, adorned herself, her face shining bright as the moon, and with her inner attendants she went to ride the jeweled chariot.

The minister set the royal vehicle moving, ordered neatly with attendants on left and right. They left the city of Lanka and went straight to the pleasure garden.

When they arrived, the chariot stopped at the jeweled landing. Benchakai came down from the pearl vehicle and led her women attendants to her mother's dwelling.

She entered, embraced her beloved mother's royal feet, pressed her face there, and sobbed in grief as if sense would end.

Then Trichada the yaksha lady saw her royal daughter embrace her in love. She stroked her whole body, lifted the lady onto her lap, and said: "Today I have just seen your face. I thought I would never meet you again." Speaking so, she cherished her daughter, kissing and comforting her beloved child. She grieved and lamented as if life would end.

Then young beloved Benchakai embraced her mother's feet, sobbed, and explained the matter: "Now the lord who rules the city, crown of the asura yakshas, has ordered your child to transform my body into young Sida and deceive Phra Rama and Phra Lak of the great imperial line. I must pretend to be dead, floating in the water near the lord's bathing landing. If I resist, I am helpless; I fear the yaksha king's danger. He will punish and kill me." The lady told this while grieving.

Then Trichada the yaksha lady heard her royal daughter and seemed about to die. "Alas, my child, what karma has struck us? Your father has left my breast; I do not know whether he is alive or dead. I have had only suffering, no happiness or delight. Only you remain, life of my life; outside you I see no one. After driving your father away, he is not satisfied, but may now kill my child too." She lamented in deep grief, nearly senseless.

Then Benchakai the yaksha lady bowed at the feet of her royal mother and answered: "In every realm into which one is born, death stands ahead. When karma is set, I will bear suffering until life ends. Mother, stay in peace. Do not burn with grief and separation." Having spoken, she paid homage, turned her face, and walked away.

When she reached the dwelling of Phra Lakshmi, she raised joined hands, bowed, and pretended grief and love, falsely accusing the matter by trick.

Then the mother of the world, beloved of all, looked and saw the asura woman enter, bow, and grieve. She was very doubtful because she did not know the yaksha lady. She spoke graciously: "Child, what is your name? Your form is slender, young, and lovely. Why have you come crying? What distress or care troubles you? Why have you come to me, asura lady?"

Then lovely Benchakai heard the royal lady's words, raised joined hands, and answered: "I, your servant beneath the royal feet, am named Benchakai the yaksha. I am the daughter of Lady Trichada; Phiphek the asura is my father. Thotsakan drove him from the victorious city, and he went to be servant of the bow-bearing lord. By the four-handed lord's mercy he has gained lasting happiness. I am a loyal child, devoted to the royal queen. Thotsakan the asura is likely to die. I ask to take refuge under the mother's feet as a parasol over my head hereafter. Therefore I have struggled and slipped out, hoping to entrust my life to you, noble lady." While reporting, she glanced with her eyes and observed the beloved one's features. Once she had memorized them surely, she took leave and went out.

She mounted the royal chariot with the women great and small, and the powerful troop moved back to Lanka city.

When she arrived and stopped at the jeweled landing, glittering with splendid gems, she raised her hands above her head and the asura woman transformed her body.

Her form became charming and beautiful, her face like a divine painting, slender and graceful, lovely to the eye, just like beloved Sida. Then she parted the splendid curtain, like a heavenly nymph, descended from the shining jeweled chariot, and went up to attend the demon king.

Then the brave-hearted ten-headed lord of the solar line sat upon the splendid jeweled seat amid beautiful attendants. He saw his beloved niece Benchakai carrying the marks of beauty beyond a painted goddess. In his heart he thought she was Sida, and longing overwhelmed him. Passion stirred him so that he could not remain seated. He leapt down from the jeweled throne and went to receive the noble lady.

He spoke sweet words: "Jewel of my eyes, highest beloved, please come, young heart of my heart, and sit on the splendid throne as the auspicious companion of my couch, sharing royal delight and assembly. I will cherish, soothe, and raise you, noble lady, and not let you suffer for even a moment."

Then Benchakai the yaksha lady saw the asura king descend from the throne, because he had seen her transformed form and thought she was fair Sida. He came walking beside her, deluded and coaxing with speech. The lady bowed her head in reverence: "May the royal feet show mercy to my head. I am Benchakai the asura, not Lady Sida."

Then Thotsakan the yaksha smiled and said: "Why say this, young garland? I think of you every hour, as if my breast will burst. I have suffered and longed for a long time. Have some pity on me, beloved younger lady." Speaking so, he led her by the hand up onto the throne, embraced her, lifted her onto his lap, rubbed and kissed her face, and spoke graciously: "I will set you as chief, sharing the shining white parasol, greater than all other beautiful women, and I will not let your heart be troubled. In serving and tending love, I will not be harsh in the least. Heavenly maiden, jewel of my eyes, do not grieve for Phra Rama your husband."

Then lovely Benchakai slipped down from the asura's lap and pushed away his hand. Thotsakan clung harder and bound her body. Pain and shame struck her like an arrow. The more she told him, the more he came pleading; when the noble lady loosened her body, the transformed form vanished and returned to Benchakai the yaksha woman. She bowed at his feet, lowered her face, and did not speak.

Then King Thotsakan looked closely at the lady and saw she had changed into his asura niece. He felt awkward and ashamed, stunned and unwilling to look at her face. "Alas, your uncle thought you were Sida. Forgive me, beloved niece. Now our wish will be fulfilled through your clever and sharp stratagem. When Phra Rama and Phra Lak see it, their lives will surely end. Niece, hurry and go. Do not let sunrise overtake you. When it is finished, return to the city. I will wait for you, noble lady."

Then lovely Benchakai bowed her head in acceptance, raised joined hands, went out, and flew away.

Beautiful as the maiden Mekhala, she crossed the great ocean-river and descended on the far shore, above Phra Rama's victorious army. She stopped to rest beneath a thick-leaved banyan, raised joined hands, recited a spell, and transformed her body.
