Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the fortieth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Rama's judgment after Hanuman and Nilaphat fight, Nilaphat's removal to Khitkhin, Nilrat's curse and role in sinking stones for the causeway, Thotsakan's order to Suphannamatcha to have the fish carry away the bridge stones, Hanuman's underwater meeting with Suphannamatcha, the stones' return, and the birth of Matchanu.

Translation

Rama Separates Hanuman and Nilaphat

Then Phra Harirak sat in the golden pavilion with his lovely younger brother. He heard a thunderous noise; earth and sky trembled, the clouds darkened the sun, and smoke covered heaven and earth. He said, "Look, Lak, beloved younger brother who shares my life. What cause has made this? The sound comes roaring and echoing. Have the monkeys building the causeway met the yakshas in battle? Go look and learn it plainly, and tell me the reason."

Then wise Phra Lak received the command of the lord of the three worlds, paid homage, and hurried away.

When he reached the ocean shore, the bow-bearing younger brother of the discus lord saw Hanuman fighting hand to hand with minister Nilaphat. Phraya Sukhrip stood between them, blocking and restraining the two splendid monkeys, pushing them apart amid noisy confusion. Phra Lak asked, "Son of the bright Sun, why are these two monkey lords fighting and competing, without fear of the four-armed lord's punishment?"

Then battle-skilled Phraya Sukhrip, powerful Hanuman, and bold Nilaphat saw the younger brother of Phra Narai. All three were startled and trembled. They sat down and bowed. The son of the Sun reported: "At first I had the two monkeys command the troops, small and great, carrying stones to fill the ocean. Each boasted of his own proud power, and so they quarreled until they fought and tried to kill one another. I feared they would offend the royal feet and ran to stop them, but I was not in time."

Then Phra Lak of the solar line heard the son of the Sun and led the three commanders inside.

They reached the front of the audience pavilion, bowed their heads with joined hands, and reported to victorious Phra Hariwong everything from the beginning.

Then Phra Krishna's protector heard it. Anger packed his breast, and his wrath was like doomsday fire. He sprang up, stamped his foot, and gave royal speech: "Look at you, Nilaphat and Hanuman, base and arrogant ones. I sent you to build the causeway. Why did each of you boast of courage, without fear of royal punishment, and fight in confusion? If war were not pressing, I would cut off your heads and set them along the seashore as fitting payment for your reckless hearts."

Then Nilaphat and Hanuman, the great soldiers, heard the king's command and were frightened as if life had ended. Each bowed his head down at the shining feet. They did not answer the royal words; the two monkeys knelt with lowered faces.

Then Phra Narai, lord of the solar line, sat silent and thought with wisdom, his breast tight and troubled. He said to the son of the Sun, "These two great monkey soldiers each hold that he has mighty power. If they are set against the demon host in rivalry, yet cannot yield to one another and insist only on fierce strength, royal business will be spoiled by these two base ones. But to punish them by taking their lives is not right. What adjustment can be made so that the business and advantage are not lost?"

Then Sukhrip, son of the shining Sun, bowed and reported to the incarnate lord: "These two victorious soldiers are like rutting war-elephants. They cannot be kept in one stall. Their bold and arrogant hearts will offend Your Majesty's feet. As for Chomphu city and Khitkhin, King Chomphu alone guards both capitals, and this may leave him anxious. Let Nilaphat the monkey hold Khitkhin city. Keep the mighty son of the Wind beneath Your Majesty's lotus feet."

Then the lord who destroys the three worlds heard wise Sukhrip and was pleased. He spoke graciously: "Splendid monkey king, you are not unworthy of being Pali's younger brother, for you are swift in wisdom." Speaking so, he removed royal ornaments and gave earrings and a shoulder chain to the mighty son of the Sun. When this was done, the king commanded: "Ho, son of Phra Kan, battle-skilled one. Go hold Khitkhin city. Let no harmful trouble arise. Every month collect fruits and bring them to supply the brave army. If there is a lack and royal business fails, I will destroy your life."

Then strong and powerful Nilaphat heard the righteous lord's command, bowed, and answered: "My offense reaches the end of life. The mighty lord has graciously spared my head. Your mercy is beyond number, greater than the sky and earth. I ask to remain beneath your lotus feet and wage war against the yakshas. Whatever is heavy, I will go out and fight until life ends." He kept bowing and pleading, but the lord would not grant it. At the end of thought, helpless in mind, he paid homage and crawled away.

He gave orders to Nilanon and the monkey troops assembled there. Each one shed tears, grieving all the more out of love for him.

When his sorrow eased a little, the splendid monkey displayed his power and flew to Khitkhin city by his monkey might.

Then the jeweled discus lord of the solar line, when powerful Nilaphat had left the pavilion, spoke to noble Hanuman: "Ho, base bold-hearted one. I chose and arranged soldiers who were swift and powerful. Khun Nilaphat was appointed as a great soldier, to be your companion of hand and heart. Why did you not make peace with him? You acted with base jealousy, crudely and foolishly, as if you meant to remove him from the golden pavilion because you wanted to do everything alone and drive the war against the yakshas yourself. Now it is as you wished, proud one who thought himself excellent. Hurry to build the causeway so the splendid monkey army may cross. If it is slower than seven nights, I will destroy your life."

Then the bold and wise son of the Wind bowed to receive the royal command and answered at the lotus feet with understanding: "My offense and fault reach the end of life. Because Your Majesty showed mercy and did not destroy my life, your grace overflows, heavier than earth and sky beyond comparison. I will take responsibility for the causeway and bring it to the far bank of the sea."

Then Chomphuphan, splendid monkey king, bowed and reported in loyalty: "I have learned the matter. The powerful monkey Nilrat once teased the great siddha named Kawin, stole his staff, and hid it in the water. When Kawin caught him, he cursed the monkey lord: whatever he threw into water would remain sunk in place and not rise again above the river. When Phra Chakri, the four-armed lord, crossed to Lanka to subdue the demons and used the brave troops to build a causeway over the ocean, if the monkeys carried mountains, this monkey alone would contend with the mountain stones and receive them. Then the siddha's curse would end. Sky-passing lord, please show mercy."

Then the radiant incarnate lord heard minister Chomphuphan and asked: "Bold Nilrat, is this true as he says? I am doubtful in heart. Tell the matter clearly."

Then mighty and bold Nilrat raised joined hands and answered the royal command: "I have been under the sage's curse for a thousand years. Jeweled discus lord, show mercy to my head. I ask to go fill the water with Pali's bold kinsman." Having reported, he bowed at the lotus feet and took leave of created Phra Narai. Sukhrip, son of the Sun, hurried away with the two commanders.

The Causeway Begins

When they reached the shore, victorious Hanuman led the troops of both cities to the Himawan mountains.

They stopped at the mountain foot. He ordered the soldiers on left and right to pry loose and carry every stone they could gather.

Then the monkey troops ran about in confusion, bracing themselves and breaking the mountain.

Some bore poles; some carried stones on their backs. Every monkey worked, jostling and arguing loudly. They shouted in clamor, and the monkeys leapt here and there.

Then the bold and wise son of the Wind lifted up Mount Himawa with his trained power.

Having obtained it, he led the brave monkey soldiers out from the Himmaphan mountains to the water's edge by his power.

When they reached the shore of the swirling sea, he ordered all the troops to put down the stones and pile them by the ocean landing.

Then the monkey soldiers, small and great, threw and hurled them continuously onto the ocean shore.

Then battle-skilled Nilrat alone displayed his power and carried mountain stones, throwing them in.

The stones sank evenly and settled in order, forming a ridge-line of a great road. The monkey troops shouted until everything shook in uproar.

Then the demon watchmen, who patrolled along the riverbank, saw the monkeys in noisy turmoil carrying stones and throwing them into the river like a rainstorm. Straight across the far shore of the swirling sea, a road was rising just below the water. The four asuras were frightened and could not stay. Together they hurried into victorious Lanka city.

When they arrived, they bowed their heads and reported to Ravana, lord of asuras: "Now Phra Rama Chakri has the monkeys carrying stones and throwing them into the ocean as a road. They are pressing the work with loud urgency. Only about eight thousand wa remain before it reaches the landing."

Then the brave-hearted ten-headed lord of the solar line heard the clear report and sat thinking: "Tch! This human is powerful and bold enough to build a road with mountains. If he crosses and reaches Lanka, the people of the whole city will burn with trouble. I must have the fish in the waters destroy the stone road. Then the enemy will be helpless." Having thought this, he ordered at once: "Powerful Mahothon, go down into the bright waters. Find Lady Suphannamatcha and invite this child of mine to come up."

Then Mahothon, the yaksha minister, received the command, took leave in reverence, came out, and parted the waters.

When he reached the young lady's dwelling in the middle of the great ocean, he said that her victorious father had sent him to invite the royal lady.

Then beautiful Lady Suphannamatcha heard the minister's words and hurried up.

When she arrived, she bowed her head to her royal father's feet amid the lovely women and waited for the kumbhanda lord's command.

Then the twenty-armed lord saw his lovely daughter and felt as if he had gained the heaven of the gods. He said, "Beloved child, apple of your father's eye, now a bold human has raised great monkey armies and set them at the river landing. He has the monkeys carry mountains and fill the ocean bed so they can cross to fight your father. Help stop this suffering and cool all our kin. Command your attendant fish to seize those stones and carry them away. Throw them into the bay of the swirling sea so that no road can rise. I will give you whatever reward you desire, dear one."

Then the lovely fish-maiden heard her father, raised joined hands, and accepted the royal command: "A matter no greater than this is not heavy. Your beloved child asks to serve. Let there be no offense at your feet, and let my father remain in peace." Speaking so, she bowed at the demon king's feet and gracefully returned to her own dwelling.

When she reached the body of the waters, she ordered her attendants, small and great, to bite onto the stones, carry them away, and throw them into the river's bay.

Then the fish attendants heard the lady's command and came in crowds, biting and carrying the stones in confusion.

They swam, parted, and churned the water in tumult; waves and spray splashed the sea. They threw the stones into the deep water. The great mountain stones that the monkeys carried without ceasing were snatched away by the fish while the monkeys shouted and kept throwing more.

Hanuman and Suphannamatcha

Then the mighty son of the Sun saw that the stones seemed strangely fewer and were disappearing. He looked carefully for a while, studied it, and thought with doubt. He said to victorious Hanuman, "Nephew, this is strange beyond thought. Why do the stones we throw down vanish and not remain? They are carried from every mountain-side and thrown in like Akanistha itself, yet I see the back of the river rising to the brim and then going away. What kind of cause is this? How can we learn what is happening in the sea?"

Then bold Hanuman heard powerful Sukhrip, joined his hands, and answered: "Nephew too has been wondering. It looks strange, just as uncle says. There must be some cause in the river. I will take leave and go down." Speaking so, he displayed his power. The ten directions thundered and shook. He parted the great ocean by his enormous might.

He looked into the ocean bed and saw the crowd of fish everywhere, biting and carrying the stones. He grew angry like doomsday fire, drew his diamond trident, and brandished it, flashing like the light of the bright sun. He rushed through the water and drove them in battle.

Many died across the ocean floor by the fierce power of the splendid monkey. The fish in the waters scattered and fled in confusion. The son of the Wind turned and blocked their escape. Then he saw the fish-maiden: her tail was the tail of a fish, her body a beautiful human body, her features charming, slender and graceful like a heavenly apsara. Furious like doomsday fire, he gnashed his teeth and shouted: "Ho, fish-woman. Why have you brought the schools of fish to carry away my stones? Do you not fear losing your life? Do you not know that Narai has incarnated to destroy the yakshas?" Speaking so, he chased her in confusion with his monkey strength.

Then beloved Suphannamatcha saw the powerful monkey and was startled in fear. She hesitated, pale and trembling, then swam swiftly away and mingled among the fish.

Then the bold and wise son of the Wind reached and chased close behind her. He caught the fish-woman.

Then beautiful Lady Suphannamatcha was terrified and lost her senses. In panic she cried out, begging for her life.

Then the mighty-hearted son of Vayu raised the divine diamond trident and spoke in anger: "What is your name, bold one? What is your race, fish-woman? Why did you bring your attendant fish to steal and carry away my stones, so the road would not be formed? Who sent you to carry them off? Tell the truth, vile one, or your life will end."

Then the lovely fish-maiden, fearing that the monkey would kill her, raised joined hands and explained the matter: "I am a child of Thotsakan, named Suphannamatcha. My royal father sent me to call out the fish in the waters, to bite and carry away the stones and throw them aside so that no road would be made. He fears that Phra Rama will cross with his army to attack Lanka island. I came and obeyed because of fear. My offense reaches the end of life. If you grant me life, I will order all the fish to hurry and carry back the stones they took. Mighty lord, please show mercy."

Then victorious Hanuman heard the fish-maiden's words as she pleaded for life. Because the flavor and sweetness of her speech pierced him with desire and stunned his mind, his anger faded and melted from his thoughts. He looked at her face and spoke.

"Lovely one, beautiful young lady of highest affection, do not fear for your spirit. I will tell you the matter clearly. At first I came down full of resentment, so angry that I could not endure it, intending to kill and destroy in the great ocean. But when I came and saw you, young beauty, your face like a divine apsara, slender, soft, and graceful, I became bound to the lady. It is merit that I have met you, younger one. We two should hold love together, share suffering and happiness in delight, until life ends."

Then beautiful Lady Suphannamatcha heard the son of the Wind's words and became shy and uneasy. She glanced sharply and answered: "How can you come courting me? It is not fitting to set love and longing upon me, one whose offense reaches death. I have not yet cleared myself of wrongdoing, and I do not expect to escape with my life. Do not use feigned schemes and make me doubly ashamed beyond gossip. As for delight and union, I am of another race and language. This is not a proper matter to discuss. Forgive me; do not be wounded in heart."

"Beloved, lovely one, graceful lady of highest affection, your words and voice are dear; where could their like be found? Beautiful in conduct and manners, clever and sharp in bearing, beautiful in body and face, you increase love beyond measure. Being of different race and lineage is not only true for you and me: even a ritual ascetic and a kinnari have shared delight. We two should hold friendship in our hearts and join closely in love." Speaking so, he reached for her again and again. "Jewel of my eyes, do not cut off longing."

Then the soft fish-maiden glanced sideways, pushed away his hand, and turned her sharp eyes and face aside. "Alas, the more I speak, the more you press upon me. What crude insult is this? You have no pity at all. Thinking of it wounds my heart. Because you are male and have no shame, you do as you like." Speaking so, she scratched and pushed in agitation, driving him away without mercy.

"Beloved beyond all, noble young lady, auspicious beauty of the asura women, I love you as my own life. Do not scratch me so hard. My desire for my beloved is so strong that I must hold you, yet I will not use a heavy hand. I am not deceiving you, lovely one. Jewel of my eyes, show me mercy." Speaking so, he leaned close and kissed her cheek and nose in pleasure, gently holding and touching her flower-breasts. The wind blew noisily. The ocean struck foam into waves; surf slapped the shore in tumult. Clouds darkened every direction above, and heavenly rain sprinkled the flowers. The lotus flower opened and spread its pollen. The two joined in love's delight, and both rejoiced.

Then lovely Suphannamatcha shared the taste of love with the mighty son of the Wind. Leaning close beside him, she was bewildered by longing. Love and desire almost broke her heart; the noble lady forgot fear of her father, forgot play in the water, forgot her fish attendants, forgot shame and self. Her love increased beyond measure.

Then victorious Hanuman greatly desired the noble young fish-maiden. The monkey lord was delighted and glad. He lifted his hand, caressed and kissed her face, and said: "Beloved, highest affection, now the lord of the three worlds has commanded me to fill the road. He has fixed that it must be finished in seven days; if not, he will punish me. My beloved, command the fish to carry the stones in the sea back to the whirlpool and make the road as it was before. Then I will be free of punishment. Lovely one, show mercy."

Then beautiful Lady Suphannamatcha heard Hanuman's words. The royal lady took leave and swam away.

When she reached the bay of the waters, she ordered her fish attendants: "Go bite and carry the stones back to their old place, all together."

When she had given the order, she moved away beautifully like a heavenly apsara, swimming with lovely gestures and returning.

Then the fish attendants, small and great, heard the noble lady's order and swam away at once.

When they reached the ocean bay, they seized the noble mountain stones, swam and parted the waters, and came back in crowded noise.

They placed the stones along the road-line. The whole crowd of fish churned in the river until all the stones they had carried away were returned.

Then bold Hanuman, the great soldier, stayed close with the fish-maiden in the water. When he saw that the fish attendants had brought back every stone, he was as happy as if he had gained Indra's treasure. The monkey lord embraced the royal lady and spoke sweetly: "Beloved young daughter, the height of my heart, my love does not wish to speak of parting, but karma requires us to separate. If I were not bound by royal duty, I would remain close and share delight with you. But if I delay, I fear punishment and the anger of the Garuda-bearing lord. Stay gently, beloved lady of highest affection. When the war in Lanka is finished, I will return to you."

Then the young fish-maiden, most pitiable, heard this as if doomsday fire burned her body. She longed deeply for the son of the Wind and grieved, lowering her face where she was. Her mind and heart failed. She clutched the monkey lord's feet and cried: "Alas, is this what true love is, that you can abandon me? My heart is pitiable. I was deluded by the flavor of words. It was not enough that I lost myself; now shame will follow me. Of all women ever born, none has had a heart like mine in this moment. I trusted too much, thinking a lover beyond my station was a friend. I fell in love until the man became weary and fled. Useless that I was born a woman; wasted that I guarded myself so long."

Then the bold and wise son of the Wind saw the noble fish-maiden grieving as if life would end. He lifted her into his lap, kissed her face, and comforted her spirit: "Do not grieve or lament, sobbing in longing. It is not that I mean to grow tired of you, beloved companion. Necessity forces me to go far away. Noble lady, guard yourself well."

Then beautiful Lady Suphannamatcha heard the son of the Wind's words. The royal lady turned her face and would not speak. She slipped down from his lap, glared sharply, and turned aside. She pushed him away and would not let him touch her body. "Do not invent words; I understand enough. Go then. Who can say anything against you? Karma has come; whom can I blame? Once you go, do not return."

Then bold Hanuman heard the lady's lament, and love increased in him beyond measure. He held her close, embraced, caressed, and kissed her face. "Lovely one, do not be angry with me. I am not abandoning you. Stay well; I must take leave." Speaking so, he displayed his power; the ocean thundered and shook. He rose from the ocean bed and went straight to the place where the road was being filled.

When he arrived, he raised his hands and bowed to the powerful son of the Sun, then explained all that had happened with the fish-woman.

Then Phraya Sukhrip, splendid monkey, heard the son of the Wind and rejoiced. He pressed the monkey army to fill the great road. Anyone who was slack on his side was beaten and driven on. Noise filled the whole sea, and the monkeys inspected one another in confusion.

Matchanu Is Born

Then Lady Suphannamatcha, after she had shared love's union with the son of the Wind, became pregnant. She thought of the monkey who was her husband and grieved in separation. She also suffered because it might reach the ears of her father, the kumbhanda king: he had sent her to perform royal business, but instead she had joined herself in secret with a soldier of the four-armed lord. She thought the king would surely kill her. "I must go and bring this out from my womb." Having thought this, she hurried to a rise beside the ocean river.

When she arrived, she lifted her hands above her head and worshiped the gods in every direction: "May the powerful guardian spirits come help me in this moment."

Now the story turns to the bright gods who dwelt by the river landing. They knew that the mighty monkey, son of divine Vayu, had joined in love with the fish-maiden, daughter of Thotsakan the asura, and that the noble lady would bear a beloved child. In time, this child would become a soldier of the discus-bearing incarnate lord. "We must help the lovely lady so that the chief beauty does not perish." Having thought this, they called to one another. The hosts of gods, great and small, and all the heavenly women of paradise flew to the riverbank.

When they reached the sandy rise beside the sea, the gods and apsaras gathered and surrounded the noble lady with compassion and mercy.

Then beautiful Lady Suphannamatcha saw the gods and goddesses gathered there on the ocean shore. She bowed her head in reverence with a happy heart. When the lasting auspicious time arrived, the noble lady brought forth her son from her mouth. He was white and pure in complexion. His body was wholly like Hanuman. He was as large as a sixteen-year-old, and his tail was plainly a fish's tail.

Then all the gods and apsaras saw that the lady had brought forth a child whose features were like noble Hanuman. They gave him a name according to his lineage and power: taking the victorious father's name and the noble mother's name together as his appellation, they named the battle-skilled one Matchanu. When this was done, the host of gods flew back to their shining heavenly mansions.

Then beautiful Lady Suphannamatcha held her beloved child against her body. She looked at his face and sighed: "Alas, you were born from my womb, yet I cannot raise you even for one day. I must leave you because I fear royal danger from your grandfather. Useless that your father was born a male; a pity he is not here to see your face. Remember your mother's words, jewel of my eyes. In the future, do not forget this: your birth-father is skilled in battle, the greatest soldier of Phra Rama, named noble Hanuman. He has a garland, earrings, jewel-hair, and glittering diamond fangs. When he yawns, bright stars and moon appear; he can leap and fly through the sky. If you meet him, go bow in reverence at his feet with a happy heart." As she spoke, she grieved and longed, almost losing her senses.

When she had finished instructing her son, she lifted joined hands above her head, gradually restrained and quieted her grief, and proclaimed: "May the tree-deities of shining power come help guard Prince Matchanu, my child, so he has no danger." Speaking so, she caressed and kissed his face. The lovely lady sighed deeply, descended from the ocean shore, and swam away into the water.
