Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the forty-first สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Maiyarap's jewel dream and adoption of Matchanu, Matchanu's station in the Mucalinda pool, completion of the stone causeway, Chaiyampawan's victory-banner boon, Indra's gift of Matali and the jeweled chariot, Rama's army crossing the sea, Thotsakan's poison-forest trap, Hanuman's killing of Phanurach below the earth, and Rama's dismissal of Prakhonthan.

Maiyarap Finds Matchanu

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha ruled the people and subjects in the underworld city. With his fourfold army and a hundred thousand brave soldiers, there was no harm or danger, and the city was joyful like a city of the gods. At night he went to sleep on a shining divine couch, surrounded by attendants and palace women, and the kumbhanda drifted into sleep.

When the last watch of night arrived, with birds calling in clear voices, he dreamed that a god came with a wish-granting jewel in hand. Its radiance was like the color of the sun. The god lifted it and set it in the asura's hand, and its light brightened the world. Then that god flew back to his shining mansion in heaven. The yaksha king gazed at the jewel until he woke from sleep.

He bathed and dressed, radiant as the moon, took up his bright jeweled mace, and went out to the royal hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the shining white parasol. The kumbhanda astrologers gathered thickly and bowed. The king gave a command, telling the learned astrologers to interpret the asura's dream.

Then the yaksha astrologers examined and checked the matter in their books, completing every point. Together they bowed their heads and spoke their prediction: "The dream in which a victorious god held up a bright and beautiful jewel and placed it in Your Majesty's hand, shining like the moon, is an excellent omen beyond the three worlds. The king will receive a son, a lasting adopted child, famous in power and wisdom. His fame will shake the underworld; all ten directions will fear his might."

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha heard the astrologers' prediction and was glad. Joy poured through him as if he had gained Indra's treasure. The gods moved the asura's heart to think of taking pleasure in the forest. He gave royal command to his senior demon ministers: "Prepare the great army. I will go roam and delight in Himawa."

Then the demon ministers bowed their heads to receive the royal command, took leave with raised hands, and hurried out.

They levied an army according to the order for a great forest excursion. The vanguard all carried firearms and wore splendid iron armor. Next came masked soldiers with copper armor, holding bows. Those with grimacing faces wore silver armor and held spears firmly. Those with sneering faces wore gold armor, carrying lances and watching keenly. The shining jeweled chariot was prepared at the radiant golden mounting platform.

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha left the jeweled throne and went to bathe.

He purified his body and bathed in fragrant water. His trousers were patterned with nagas; his garment had the black field of the thong khao bin pattern. Its fluttering ends and side panels were woven with gold vines. His breastband was all topaz, set with round panels and cut gems. Necklaces and shoulder chains were engraved in patterns; red diamond ornaments flashed like a rainbow. Hanging jeweled tassels lay over his breast, and gold armlets encircled his arms. He put on rings of the nine gems and a bright jeweled crown. In his hand he held the mace and went to mount the royal chariot.

Beautiful was the royal chariot, its wheels set with jewels and its rim inlaid. Its yoke was graceful, curved, and delicate. Tiered images surrounded the floating throne. Its four faces were as beautiful as a golden palace, with swan-scrolls, lion-thrones, and hanging ornaments. The axle hubs shone with brilliant gems; the delicate side-panels glittered. It was harnessed to chosen lions, all with manes, and the charioteer held a spear and drove leaping through the sky like the wind. High regalia, screens, parasols, and banners stood thickly; the dense escort pressed around it. The wheels thundered, and soldiers shouted in uproar. They opened the way over the earth, hurrying the troops onward.

When they reached the sandy ridge beside the mountain, shaded pleasantly by many trees, he halted the chariot at the mountain foot. The asura descended and went to roam for pleasure.

He admired the fine trees of the forest, growing in bright rows, flowering and fruiting among the leaves, their delicate sprays swaying. Unripe, half-ripe, and ripe fruits were everywhere. Flowers opened with pollen. The wind carried their fragrance, and birds flew down, perched, pecked, and ate. Some sang to one another in groups, lovely to hear and see beyond end. He came admiring them to the water landing, along the current and sandy shore. Bright pebbles flashed to the eye, colored like shining jewels: white like diamonds, green patterned like Garuda eggs, red like ruby light, yellow gleaming like topaz water, and some colored like champunuth gold. Admiring them, he walked along the sea.

The wind blew and drove the waves, roaring as they struck the foaming shore. Looking out, Maiyarap saw a child whose face and body were monkey-like, whose tail was the tail of a fish, white, radiant, and shining, sitting at the ocean edge like an unstained moon.

He stopped, stood, and stared. The more he thought, the stranger it seemed to the yaksha. After examining the child for a while with gladness, the asura walked toward him.

When he reached him, he spoke: "Child, what is your origin? What is your name, lineage, and race? Why are you here in this wilderness?"

Then the bold grandson of Vayu heard the asura's command and bowed at his lotus feet with gladness. He reported: "My name is Matchanu, splendid monkey. Lady Suphannamatcha is my mother. She bore me here on the sandy beach at the foot of the mountain by the shore, then returned to the sea and has not come back."

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha heard this and was delighted. The asura thought, "This must be like my dream. The astrologers' prediction was surely not wrong. It seems the gods moved my heart and brought me to meet this child." Having thought this, he spoke graciously: "Look, beloved child and delight of my life. I have neither son nor daughter to continue my line in the underworld. I will raise you like a child of my own belly, so you will be lasting, happy, and at peace." Speaking so, he embraced and lifted the child and brought his soldiers back.

He mounted the victorious royal chariot, with the fourfold army on left and right, and ordered the great force to break camp and return to the royal city.

When they reached the inner checkpoint near the demon city, he halted the army. The asura thought, "This child is of fish-born stock and has lived for pleasure in the great sea. If I bring him into the victorious city, his spirit will not be happy." Having thought this, he gave royal speech to the yaksha ministers, ordering them to dig a pool ten thousand wa wide and long, splendid with lotus flowers.

Then the bold senior ministers received the command of the lord of the underworld city, bowed at his lotus feet, and went out.

They measured and divided the work among all the troops on left and right, fifty beings to each wa, enough to complete the account.

Then the yaksha troops dug and carried in noisy confusion, cursing and striking one another as they worked.

In a moment it became the Mucalinda pool, its water clean, cool, and clear. Golden lotuses lay thick with flowers and leaves. It was completed according to the royal command.

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha rejoiced because it matched his thought. He ordered Prince Matchanu: "You shall live in this pool, a place of happiness and peace. If any enemy or wicked host appears, destroy them and end their lives."

Then wise Matchanu rejoiced because it suited his heart. He bowed and answered the command: "Your Majesty has shown mercy and compassion, kindness like a royal father. If an enemy or wicked host appears, I ask to serve and fight." Having reported, he raised his hands in homage at the yaksha king's feet and descended into the pool, where he lived in happiness and delight.

Then brave-hearted Phraya Maiyarap, when Prince Matchanu was stationed to guard the inner checkpoint, gave royal speech to the senior commander, ordering him to break camp and hurry the great army back to the pleasant city.

The Army Crosses the Sea

Then Sukhrip and Hanuman, the brave soldiers, when the stone causeway was finished, had the monkey troops hurry to beat and level it smooth. They spread the surface with soft sand, set firm markers by line and measure, and together came back inside.

When they arrived, they bowed their heads and reported to the supreme lord: "Your servants have gone and built the road. It is finished according to Phra Chakri's command."

Then radiant Phra Narai of the solar line heard Pali's younger brother and rejoiced as if he had gained the sixteen heavens. He smiled, peaceful in heart, his face like the bright moon in its halo, joy soaking him like amrita. He commanded Phraya Phiphek, bold and wise demon lord, to find the auspicious time for raising the army. "Sukhrip, arrange a standard-bearer, bold and brave in war, to lead the monkey army in lasting safety."

Then Chaiyampawan, splendid monkey, heard the royal words and was glad because they matched his thought. He bowed and reported to the lord, crown of the world: "I received a boon from the lord of the world: if Narai incarnated from the Milk Ocean to subdue an age and make the world happy, and if he crossed to Lanka, city of demons, I would be his soldier carrying the victory banner. I would lead the armies, subduing the names of all asuras. This would be the greatest auspicious sign, and conquest would spread across the earth. If Your Majesty wishes to know the matter clearly, ask Rishi Amornamesh. He lives on Mount Kailasa, flourishing in mercy and meditation."

Then wise Phra Chakri heard Chaiyampawan and was pleased, for the thought suited him. He ordered battle-strong Hanuman: "Go invite the powerful holy one Amornamesh, who dwells on Kailasa, to come down."

Then the bold and wise son of the Wind bowed to receive the royal command, took leave with raised hands, and quickly flew away.

When he reached the hermitage pavilion, he raised his hands, bowed, and said: "The conch-bearing lord has commanded me to invite the holy sage."

Then Rishi Amornamesh learned that mighty Phra Narai had sent to invite him. He was filled with joy, took his palm-leaf fan and large shoulder-bag, and flew swiftly from the pavilion. The mighty son of the Wind followed.

When the sage arrived, he mounted the throne seat, sat in meditation, and restrained himself in discipline amid the monkey army, waiting to hear Phra Chakri's command.

Then the radiant incarnate lord paid reverence and spoke: "I will raise the army to subdue the asuras in the demon city, and I have arranged the brave soldiers. Chaiyampawan the monkey says he received a boon from the lord of the world to carry the victory banner and lead the army. Is this true, holy siddha? My doubt is great."

Then Rishi Amornamesh heard and understood the matter from the beginning. He said: "The lord of the three worlds granted Chaiyampawan a boon: if Narai incarnated, he should serve by carrying the banner and leading the army. It is true, just as the monkey said. By his name he subdues the names of the yakshas, and he is also sharp-minded, bold, and brave in war. He will be a lasting blessing to the mighty four-armed lord. The foolish asuras will be defeated and will not withstand his power. Conquest will spread through all ten directions, and the enemies will be leveled across the earth. Your Majesty should do according to the word of the radiant wise Swayambhu. There will be victory over the royal enemies throughout the three worlds." Speaking so, he gave a blessing for lasting supreme happiness, took leave from the pavilion, and flew to his teacher's hut.

Then Phiphek the bold and wise astrologer purified the time and checked the auspicious hour. Having obtained the fortunate day and time, he bowed to the lord's feet and reported: "Tomorrow is the auspicious time to march, greatly blessed and fortunate. The gods together enter and gather in Aries, increasing royal power. The enemy will be defeated. The bright hour is a great success and good fortune; by the calculations, great gain will come. It is a sign of excellent blessing, as if it came from heaven."

Then bow-bearing Phra Rama of the solar line heard Phiphek's prediction. The lord was happy and pleased. He ordered mighty Sukhrip to arrange the splendid monkey army into divisions from both cities, making all ready during the night.

Then Sukhrip, son of the bright Sun, received the Garuda-bearing lord's command, bowed, and hurried out.

He arranged them as a dragon crossing the ocean. The son of the Wind was the head in front. Wahurom of power was the upper jaw; Pingkhala the monkey was the lower jaw. The two horns were Surasen and Surakan; noble Chomphuphan was the crest. Komut of power was the left eye; battle-skilled Saram was the right eye. Angkhot, Indra's nephew, was the body. The right foot was the monkey Nilakhan; the left foot was Nilpanan. Kesarathamala was the tongue. The rear left foot was Thaviphat; Mahatthawikan was the right foot. Nilanon followed as the tail, and the body was the whole host of warriors. The monkey ranks were the claws, fangs, and many-colored scales of the dragon's body. Everything was completed according to the command.

Then wise Phra Chakri slept through the night on the shining jeweled couch. When the last watch came, birds called and crowed, bees and beetles circled, cicadas made touching music, stars and moon vanished from the sky, and the sun was near the dawn. Golden light shone brightly, and the lord woke from sleep.

He rinsed his mouth, washed his face, and invited his younger brother Phra Lak to leave the splendid jeweled couch and go to the sea-bathing place.

[Thon]

The two princes bathed and purified themselves in scented water like divine pollen. Each put on splendid lower garments with jewel-bright curved hems. Phra Hariwong wore a divine cloth patterned with swan-vines and hanging flower-panels. Phra Lak wore cloth with floating kanok stems and fluttering panels. They put on traveling tunics of brocade, openworked in vine patterns, breast ornaments set with red diamonds, engraved direction-plates and jeweled chains. Their gold armlets were shaped like twining dragons, alternating with emerald and pearl. Their rings were diamond-set with Garuda mounts, and their divine jeweled crowns shone brightly. Golden flower garlands hung from them, strangely beautiful, outshining the three worlds. Each held a war-subduing bow and came together to the jeweled mounting platform.

They lowered themselves and sat, fixing their eyes and observing in all directions for omens of the march, facing according to the naga-scales.

Now the story will speak of radiant Thao Hatsanai, seated on his shining divine throne in lasting happiness beneath the Parichat tree, surrounded by divine kings and apsaras. He looked down to earth and saw the four-armed Avatara raising a great army across the vast ocean to the island of Lanka, city of demons, to kill the foolish asuras. Since there was no beautiful golden chariot and the lord would have to go on foot in hardship, Indra decided to send the jeweled chariot to offer to the sky-passing king.

Having thought this, he ordered Matali: "Now bow-bearing Phra Narai is raising the army to attack the unrighteous asuras. Take the bright and splendid jeweled chariot and offer it to the Garuda-bearing lord at Khanthakala mountain. Then remain as charioteer, driving the horses and chariot until the war in Lanka is finished, and only then return from the victorious lord."

Then wise Matali received Hatsanai's divine command and left his heavenly mansion.

He yoked the radiant heavenly chariot to brave divine horses. When this was finished, he drove it flying by divine power.

The divine horse-youths rejoiced, proud and trying the reins. They raised their ears, lifted their tails, braced themselves, and neighed until the worlds thundered, resounding through all ten directions, up to the sixteen Brahma heavens and down to the great underworld. Floating through the air, bright with pearl-light, blazing with radiance, the chariot descended straight before the victory pavilion.

When he arrived, he set it at the jeweled mounting platform and reported: "The lord of great Meru has learned that the righteous king will cross to Lanka island to destroy the deluded asuras. He has sent this shining jeweled chariot, peer of the radiant Vejayanta, to offer to Phra Hariwong, so he may ride it to subdue the yakshas on the island of Lanka and gain victory over the asura host. He has also ordered me to serve at your feet, driving the victorious royal chariot until the work of subduing the foolish asuras is complete."

Then wise Phra Chakri learned that mighty Makhawan had given him the heavenly chariot and was glad. He spoke in greeting: "I thank radiant thousand-eyed Hatsanai. His mercy this time is a grace no one can equal."

Having spoken, he invited his noble younger brother and left the shining golden platform. Beautiful as the sun and moon, the two mounted the splendid divine chariot.

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha, when he saw the auspicious hour arrive, had the victory gong struck. The musicians sounded trumpets, conches, pipes, and drums, roaring until everything shook. The great army shouted in uproar. Mighty Chaiyampawan waved the banner and led the troops in front. The marching army advanced in the lasting naga-scale order.

Then bow-bearing Phra Narai of the solar line, when the vanguard had reached the ocean shore, ordered the victorious chariot to move.

Beautiful was the jeweled chariot, splendid with its inlaid rim. Its curved yoke was smooth and graceful, with coiling vines and a raised floating throne. Images of lions stood firm in rows; Garudas seized nagas, their heads hanging down. The shining axle hubs were set with jewels; the jeweled side-panels gleamed. It was harnessed with four pure divine horses, white as conches. Matali drove with force, smoothly and swiftly as the wind. Peacock parasols, regalia, banners, and pennants stood thickly; the escort pressed close amid gongs and drums. Soldiers leapt and sprang, joyful and proud for battle. The sound shook through the deeps as they hurried across the sea.

Then the gods and heavenly women of every order saw Phra Harirak Chakri raising the monkey host to cross and destroy the asuras. Each was filled with joy. Some opened the lion-windows of their mansions and leaned out with faces crowded everywhere. They scattered golden flowers and divine mandara blossoms, sweetly fragrant and thickly strewn, gave victory blessings to the Avatara, and clapped their hands through the whole heaven.

Then the lord who destroys the three worlds hurried the army across the great river-ocean. He was beautiful like the king of the gods going to roam upon the waters; beautiful was the jeweled chariot, and beautiful the whole army.

When they reached the middle of the ocean, the Garuda-bearing lord admired the fish: mermaids, serpents, Rahu fish, and sea-monsters; dolphins rising and spouting water; golden fish moving through the sea; makaras playing in splashing water; striped fish swimming near whales; water-elephants leaping and teasing one another; human-faced fish circling in pairs; seahorses lifting their heads and turning; sharks following the waves in confusion; ray-fish flying; eagles of the water fleeing swordfish; great nagas floating and playing in the current. The fish in the waters seemed to rejoice and help offer blessings. The wind blew gently and coolly, touching the water into ripples and spray. The sun drove his chariot across the sky, releasing soft light for delight. Birds flew and sang in offering, like music and song. The two princes rejoiced, and the brave troops hurried across.

When they reached the far shore of the ocean, the king halted the troops, small and great, and set them into victorious battle order according to the march.

Then the demon watchmen saw the army come across the ocean and hurried into Lanka city.

When they arrived, they bowed at the demon king's feet and reported: "Phra Rama Chakri has raised the monkey army in formations counted by oceans, endless to the eye. They have crossed and reached the ocean shore, and now rest by the river."

The Poison-Forest Trap

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line heard and felt anger packed into his spirit. The asura sat thinking: "Tch! This war: I have planned to destroy it many times and failed. Now it has overrun and crossed the ocean shore, daring to come fight. Good. Now we will see. I will kill them all by my fierce power and wisdom, without needing weapons in battle." Having thought this, he spoke to the yaksha Phanurach: "Now the enemy king has raised his army across. Go into the forest and conjure trees bearing fruit everywhere, with the ground, water, and landing arranged cleverly. Then lie hidden inside the earth so they do not know the cause. If the enemy raises the army and camps on the place you have conjured, overturn the ground and leave none of them. If you succeed as I wish, I will divide the city and give it to you as reward."

Then diligent minister Phanurach received the kumbhanda king's command, bowed, and answered the royal words: "A matter no greater than this is not difficult. I can receive it upon my head. I will kill all the enemy host. Let the lord not trouble his spirit." Having spoken, he bowed at the demon king's feet, left the jeweled royal hall, and swiftly flew away.

He took a winding short path through the forest. Seeing a broad forest near the victorious army of Phra Chakri, set at the beginning of the road, he rejoiced. He raised joined hands above his head and recited a powerful spell. The asura conjured the forest.

In a moment it became a smooth level ground strewn with soft sand. Lovely fruiting trees shaded the sunlight in dense green. It was a place of great delight for roaming, with stones laid out, brooks, and flowing streams, clean and pure, pleasing to the heart but mingled with poison by the spell. The trees, fruits, leaves, and trunks were intoxicating from their sweet scent. When all was finished in every part, he recited the spell of knowledge.

His body became larger than Brahma. He displayed power and entered the thick earth. His two feet braced against the stone supporting the great earth, and with both hands he held up the ground by the yaksha's mighty power, waiting for the royal enemies. When the moment came, he would overturn the land.

Then Phra Narai of the solar line, master of the arts, when the monkey army had finished crossing, gave royal command: "Look, mighty Prakhonthan, you who are wise and brave. Go look for a spacious place, an auspicious ground where we can set the pavilion and rest the splendid monkey army. Once it is secure, we will raise the forces to fight the kumbhanda host."

Then diligent Prakhonthan received the Garuda-bearing lord's command, bowed, and hurried away.

He wandered through the forest along the foot of the great mountain and reached the place the demon lord had conjured: lovely fruiting trees, broad level private ground, streams of water from the mountain, a lasting auspicious site called Garuda. According to the manuals of victorious war, it was fit for the great army to camp. He cut marks on trees to mark the road and hurried back at once.

When he arrived, he bowed and reported to radiant Phra Narai's feet: "There is a forest, clean and pleasing, a blessed and auspicious place. The ground is smooth and delightful to see, complete with water and fruits. The mountains and trees are suitable. It is fit for the army to rest."

Then bow-bearing Phra Narai of the solar line heard powerful Prakhonthan, and the lord asked Phiphek: "This forest seems very pleasant. Does the yaksha king know of it? What is its name? Is it near or far from Lanka?"

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha heard the royal command and answered: "Outside Marakat mountain there is no pleasant secluded forest. I think the lord of Lanka, the demon king, must have caused this to appear by power."

Then Phra Harirak Chakrakrit heard the omen-knowing astrologer, and the mighty lord considered. "This war trick is very deep. It seems it must be as Phiphek says." He gave royal command to powerful Hanuman: "Have Prakhonthan lead you back to look first. Examine whether good or harm is certain, and then we can raise the army quickly."

Then bold Hanuman the great soldier bowed his head to receive the king's command and had Prakhonthan lead him there.

The two commanders walked along the path between the forest rows until they reached the asura's conjured place, a broad and strangely suitable ground, complete with many kinds of fine trees set in rows, flowering and fruiting, with raw, half-ripe, ripe, and overripe fruit fallen everywhere. Yet no birds at all came near to eat. Hanuman examined it with quick wisdom and understood clearly that it was a demon trick, just as Phiphek had reported to the radiant lord. "Good or evil beneath the earth: there may be an illusory asura there. I should go down and look, to learn the yaksha's trick." Having thought this, he displayed power and pierced down through the earth.

Glancing around, he saw the asura: he had conjured his body huge, lifting the earth with both arms by bold power. The monkey lord drew the trident from his body, intending to kill him. He stamped, ground his teeth, and rushed in to attack.

Then powerful Phanurach the yaksha grew furious like fire. The asura snatched and drew his mace, swinging and turning it in confusion with fierce strength. He leapt and thrust forward to meet the monkey's power.

Then bold Hanuman pressed and drove the close battle, cutting and striking in combat.

His left foot stepped on the asura's knee; his right hand swung the shining trident. They grappled and turned, each slashing, stabbing, and striking.

Then powerful Phanurach the yaksha twisted and turned by his power, shaking Hanuman off. One foot stepped on the monkey's knee, and he swung the mace to kill him. Each attacked and fought without yielding or stopping.

Then strong and powerful Hanuman pressed in close combat and charged, stabbing the kumbhanda by his power.

The demon fell to the ground. With his left hand Hanuman seized the yaksha's head, held him down beneath the earth, and questioned him: "Ho, wicked fool. Who sent you, and from where? What is your name? Why have you come to do this?"

Then mighty Phanurach the yaksha had exhausted power and thought for fighting. The asura told the truth: "My name is Phanurach, a demon lord and soldier of the ten-faced yaksha. He commanded me to come and conjure a forest, complete with water and fruit, suitable as a pleasant gathering place. If Phra Rama came and stationed the army there, I was to overturn the earth and kill the splendid monkey troops, ending this whole army so the war would not continue."

Then bold Hanuman the great soldier heard and understood without doubt. He swung the trident like doomsday fire. "Look at you, base one. I am Kala embodied." Speaking so, he struck and killed the kumbhanda, ending his life.

Then he used the powerful diamond trident to cut off the yaksha's head. It flew from the body, and the monkey lord carried it up.

He stopped and carefully examined the demon's conjured place. It had vanished from sight. Then he led Prakhonthan back.

When he arrived, he bowed and reported to the bow-bearing lord of earth how he had followed and killed the enemy, and the monkey offered the kumbhanda's head.

Then Phra Krishna's protector heard and grew angry like doomsday fire. The righteous lord gave a command: "Ho, Prakhonthan. You are deeply ugly in conduct. I trusted you and sent you as my eyes. I did not send you to fight. Even in this small matter, you spoiled the work and did not understand the demon's trick. You would have led the army and troops to die, all the victorious host. This offense reaches death. Killing you would bring no benefit. If you stay, you will die. Go quickly, foolish one."

Then Prakhonthan, strong and powerful, heard the royal command as if struck by the light of a poison arrow. He bowed down and answered the royal words: "My offense is wrongful. Since Your Majesty has shown mercy and not killed my life, the mighty lord's grace is beyond measure." Speaking so, he took leave in reverence, tears streaming in rows, crawled out beyond the victorious army, and flew to the place where he had lived before.
