This is the forty-second สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Rama's seizure of Marakat mountain as a fortified camp, Hanuman's killing of Kumbhasura, construction of the army pavilion and watch system, Thotsakan's reinforcement of Lanka after Saran's report, Rama's council on whether to attack, Angkhot's appointment as envoy, Angkhot's entry into Lanka after breaking the city gate, and the reading of Rama's letter before Thotsakan.

Translation

Securing Marakat Mountain

Then the lord who had conquered every realm sat on the riverbank with his soldiers and armies. From morning until evening, when the sun had slanted down the sky, he gave a royal command and asked Phraya Phiphek the asura: "When we raise the warriors and go to strike the yakshas, at what place should we set our fixed camp so that it will be lasting?"

Then the battle-skilled younger brother of Thotsakan heard the king's words, raised joined hands, and answered the command: "Marakat Kiri mountain is the meeting place of the yakshas. It is neither near nor far from Lanka. Its ground and water are pleasant, and it is furnished with auspicious fruit trees. It is fit for the army to rest there. It also agrees with the great name of Garuda, so the demons will be defeated by its power. But Kumbhasura, powerful in battle, guards it with a hundred koti troops. Let a mighty soldier go destroy the kumbhanda's life."

Then Phra Hariwong, the Narai-fashioned lord, heard Thotsakan's younger brother and commanded Hanuman: "You, who have conquering power, lead the warrior ranks and go attack those vile asuras. Destroy them and end their lives."

Then the son of the Wind, victorious and glorious, received the command of the lord of the earth, bowed with joined hands, and came out.

He arranged the army and soldiers, choosing the monkey ranks on left and right. When he had selected the strong and able ones, he led the army away.

When he reached Marakat mountain, he looked and saw countless asuras, stationed in outer and inner ranks all around the foot of the mountain. He ordered the monkey soldiers: "Hurry in and fight the yakshas. Kill them all with your victorious strength and power."

Then the monkey warriors heard Hanuman's words and leapt forward to seize the victory.

They rushed, wheeled, crowded, and grappled, with no waiting or holding back. They kicked, bit, struck, and beat in confusion with their mighty power.

Then the asura and yaksha ranks, when the monkeys charged and attacked, fought back in battle. They shot, parried, stabbed, and slashed in disorder, each displaying his brave strength. The shouting shook the earth, and demon troops kept wheeling in to support one another.

Then the bold monkey soldiers received and warded off the asuras, striking left and sweeping right in confusion. Group by group and rank by rank they seized one another. Yakshas fell dead; others broke, shrank back, scattered, and fled.

Then Kumbhasura, the great commander, saw his whole army shattered. He was angry like the fire at the end of an age. He stamped his foot with a thunderous noise. The asura swung his spear like a spinning discus, ground his teeth, clenched his jaws, and rushed in pursuit of the monkeys.

He charged and stabbed wildly, never stopping, swift as a lion. Monkeys died in heaps under his hand, cut down by the asura's power.

Then Hanuman, victorious and glorious, saw the yaksha attacking while the monkeys fell back and fled. He was enraged like cosmic fire. His hand itched to kill. He drew his mighty diamond trident and stood blocking the troops. He brandished it and displayed his strength until the earth shook in fear. He leapt, sprang, thrust through the ranks, and drove in to seize the asura.

His left foot stepped on the yaksha's right shoulder, and his hand snatched away the yaksha's spear. They turned and grappled in a whirl, taking turns pressing the combat.

Then strong Kumbhasura received and parried in confusion, turned back, and grappled in the melee. Both were bold, both brave, springing into battle. They slashed and stabbed wildly, each displaying battle-power, neither dropping his hand.

Then fierce Hanuman, battle-skilled, dodged and pressed the fight. The monkey stepped on the kumbhanda's shoulder. With one hand he clutched and tore the hair, turning and twisting like a spinning discus, changing stance as he fought and guarding himself at each moment.

Then Kumbhasura the yaksha resisted and held his ground. The asura stepped on Hanuman's knee. His left hand seized the monkey's neck; his right hand lifted the spear to kill. Both brave ones moved against each other and fought without thought for life.

Then the Wind's son, mighty and brave of heart, sprang with all his strength and kicked the asura in the chest. The yaksha lurched aside and could not stand straight; he fell beside the foot of the shining mountain. Hanuman struck him with the powerful diamond trident, and his life ended.

When that was done, Hanuman cut off the demon commander's head, displayed his holy power and brave strength, sprang up into the sky, and flew back to the pavilion.

When he arrived, he bowed at Phra Narai's feet, offered the yaksha's head, and reported everything from beginning to end among the monkey commanders.

Then the lord of the three worlds, wielder of the bow, heard the powerful monkey and rejoiced because it matched his thought. He looked at the asura's head and gave a royal command: "This noble Hanuman is skilled in power and can be used as the heart desires." When he had spoken, he bathed and dressed, radiant like a godly painting. He invited Phra Lak, his younger brother, and mounted the splendid chariot.

He ordered the great army and every warrior rank to move out. Chaiyampawan the monkey waved the victory banner in front and led the troops. Victory drums and conquering drums boomed; the soldiers shouted in tumult. Curved trumpets and foreign trumpets blared as if the earth itself would collapse. The jangkiang ranks and the eighteen crowned commanders each displayed terrible power: some went under the earth and rose again, some walked beneath the river, some flew through the sky, some moved inside the cloud petals, some leapt down from heaven, some held their breath and vanished, some tunneled through mountains, and some walked on the peak of Yugandhara. The monkeys swelled with pride and power. Earth and air trembled; the sound thundered up to Dusit. Darkness spread in every direction as the powerful lord hurried his army forward.

Then Thotsakan's younger brother and mighty Hanuman led Phra Chakri on his march. When they reached the jeweled Marakat mountain, they bowed their heads to his auspicious feet and told the lord of the earth, "This place is a lasting victory-ground."

Then Phra Chakri, the jeweled discus-lord and wielder of the bow, heard the brother of the twenty-armed king and stopped the army.

He gave a royal command to Phraya Sukhrip the noble monkey: "We will set our fixed camp here as a great fortified city."

Then wise and brave Sukhrip received the command of the incarnate lord, bowed at his lotus feet, and went out.

He levied the army ranks, every group of monkeys great and small, and had them set the army camp and victory pavilion near Marakat Kiri.

Then the commanders of the two noble cities immediately made levies according to the military rolls. Each set out his own duty-place, stretched measuring cords, and set markers before everyone. They leveled the ground and hauled wood in a tumult, scolding and urging one another as they worked.

They made a surrounding rampart, ditches, diamond embankments, and blade-like earthworks. Forts, camps, fighting towers, and women's guardwalks were alternated row by row. Gate arches and firm barriers stood secure; banners brightened the battlements. Then they raised a golden victory pavilion, four-faced, shining, lofty, and beautiful. In the audience hall they set a throne-seat; golden screens glittered. The jeweled terrace and landing shone; the parade ground lay ready for military display. Sword guards, palace officials, and police were lined up; council halls stood to left and right. Roads were paved and laid with stone, all completed according to the king's command.

Then Phraya Sukhrip, the great soldier, once he had finished levying all the troops, assigned forest guards, scouts, hundred-companies, event-watchers, and relief companies. They took turns patrolling the passes, sat guard by the fires in their stations, and inspected every company and division.

Rama's Camp at Marakat

Then Phra Kritsanu the protector, when the pavilion had been finished in the great and lasting victory-ground, invited his younger brother Phra Lak: "Let us go tour the mountain." Speaking so, he stepped out, and the monkey kings followed.

[Forest viewing]

The two kings toured the golden mountain. Its rock spread along the slopes and ridges in wide terraces, gladdening the heart, shining and gleaming. The peaks rose mingled in descending tiers, fresh green like emerald. Flame-like crags showed through the mountain clefts, and water channels flowed down. Trees stood thick in rows, opening flowers and spreading fragrance. Some bore fruit, ripe and half-ripe, good to eat, fallen thick over the ground. Flocks of birds and swans flew in circles and settled there. Some gave sweet, haunting cries as if offering victory to the four-armed lord. The king felt eased from longing for his beloved, rejoiced, and went on with a face bright like the moon along the mountain foot.

When he had finished viewing the mountain, the crowned lord of the three worlds went with his younger brother Phra Lak to the water landing.

They washed and bathed, delighting the body in the noble stream. The water was clear as jewel-light, so that the riverbed could be seen. Foam surged and burst as it flowed roaring and cool. Patterned stones glittered bright, with shining pebbles and gems. Clumps of flowers lifted delicate stems in bloom. Bees whirred and circled quickly, searching and tasting the pollen. Many fish swam in circles, following one another in schools. They nibbled algae, rose, spouted water, and floated close together in pairs. Rama raised his hand and pointed, telling his brother to look, joyful and at ease: "It is as delightful as Nandavana's pool in the Dusit heaven."

When the Chakri lord had finished bathing, he moved gracefully and returned to the victory pavilion.

Then the monkey soldiers, great and small, and all the mighty eighteen crowned commanders went down into the water.

The clear water flowed and poured in, cooling the noble monkeys' bodies. They swam through the stream, playing together loudly through the whole river. Some gathered water caltrops and lotus pods, dug roots and tubers for food, snatched and broke lotus blossoms, and leapt into the trees by the shore. They jumped from great branches to small ones, hung and teased one another. Some monkeys plunged and dived, pulling up strands of waterweed and flinging them away. Some threw gravel and sand, clapped their hands, and laughed. They seized, wrestled, and hugged one another in a melee, with shouting and joy everywhere.

When they had finished playing in the stream, Sukhrip, Hanuman, the great soldiers, and all the mighty army returned to the camp and pavilion.

Then Saran, the demon envoy, saw that Phanurach the asura and Kumbhasura had lost their lives. Terrified and trembling, his spirit gone as if his own life would end, he sprang onto his swift horse and rushed into victorious Lanka.

When he arrived he crawled in to attend the king, bowed his head, and raised joined hands. He reported: "Powerful Phanurach went out to conjure the forest. A white monkey perceived it and destroyed him. The enemy, bold and fierce, charged and pursued. Kumbhasura too has lost his life, and the demon ranks broke and scattered. The hostile royal enemies are arrogant in strength. Now they have brought their whole army and fixed themselves on Marakat mountain, more numerous than can be counted and covering the great earth."

Then the brave Ten-headed lord of the Sun-line heard Saran's report. The demon king sat silent, thinking: "I sent my soldier to work a trick, but he lost his life and honor to a forest monkey because that asura Phiphek told my enemies the matter. That is why they are bold and fearless enough to set their camp here." The more he thought, the more anger pressed his heart, and his chest burned like fire. He gave a royal command to the demon ministers: "Quickly levy the soldiers and guard every post together."

Then diligent Mahothon the demon received the kumbhanda king's command, bowed, and came out.

He levied battle-skilled soldiers, choosing only bold and brave ones. They held weapons in their hands and guarded the wall-posts. Five sen of ground were assigned to the watch companies, and strong reserve troops stood ready. All held red stone swords, enduring in battle-strength. At the fort openings, towers, and gates they set large guns ready to fire, with covered engines, clamps, and weapons ranged all around the city parapet. They sat guard by the fires with strict care; inspectors took turns checking continually. Gongs were struck and warning cries called again and again, while watchfires shone around the whole city.

Then the lord who had defeated the three worlds, when dusk fell and twilight dimmed, saw the moon free of cloud and stain. He reclined on his couch, beautiful as when he slept on the Ocean. He thought over the work of destroying the enemies who had insulted the royal feet. He remembered his chief queen and sighed heavily until the last watch passed without sound sleep. Near eleven o'clock and seven baht, as the sun was almost brightening the sky, the wind blew softly and carried the scent of flowers. Birds cried out as an offering, their voices filling the mountain. Bees and swarms of insects flew thickly, tasting the flowers.

He bathed and dressed like a king of the gods, bright with pearls. He took the jeweled divine sword and came out among the troops.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne, beautiful as Thao Kosi on his shining divine seat in a great victorious palace.

Phiphek, Sukhrip, Hanuman, Angkhot, the great soldier Chomphuphan, mighty Chomphuwaracha, Chaiyam, Kesarathamala, Nilanon, Nilrat, Nilakhan, Nilpanan, Nilek, powerful Khun Nil, Pingkhala, Wisantarawi, Chotimuk, Wimon, Malun, Keyun, Mayun, the noble monkeys Saram and Wahurom, Satphali, Komut, Surasen, Surakan, Thaviphat, Mahatthawikan, Vaiyabut, and battle-skilled Makanjawik all came, the eighteen crowned commanders. All were famed and skilled; many diamond-armored jangkiang troops attended. The two sides knelt in ordered ranks: the lineage of the monkey king of Chomphu on the left, and the city of Khitkhin on the right. Rama gave a royal command, taking counsel on war: "Listen, kings of the monkeys, both Chomphu and Khitkhin, skilled in the field. We have labored with effort to build a road across and have reached Lanka. Now shall we raise the mighty army, wade in, pursue, and kill the yakshas, ending their evil line, or what should we do?"

Then Phraya Sukhrip the noble monkey, together with the soldiers of both cities, bowed their heads, raised joined hands, and said: "If we charge and storm the yaksha city, how could it withstand us? The victorious city would certainly be crushed according to Your Majesty's will. But it would not be honorable or famous throughout the world afterward. It would be as if this were not a king's war, but forest robbers in disguise plundering a city. Let a wise envoy be appointed, bold and skilled in speech, to carry Your Majesty's letter into the presence of Thotsakan. Let him speak according to dharma and custom before there is fighting and killing. Perhaps the kumbhanda king will end his delusion and desire, feel his own wrongdoing, care for his life, and bring the chief queen to offer beneath your lotus feet. Your Majesty's fame will be known until the end of the age. If he remains stubborn and arrogant, then raise the warriors and attack."

Then the radiant incarnate lord heard his ministers' counsel, and it matched the ancient custom. He gave a command to the brave son of the Sun: "Whom do you see as wise enough to carry the letter in and negotiate?"

Then glorious Sukhrip raised joined hands and answered the command about who should carry Phra Chakri's letter: "I see only the monkey Angkhot, the radiant son of Pali. He has strength and power and does not fear the ten-faced asura. His wit and wisdom are capable; his words are bold and sharp. Even if Thotsakan the demon king is obstinate and stiff, and hundreds of koti come to attack, I think the monkey can fight them. He will not disgrace Your Majesty's feet. Please command him."

Then the lord who had defeated every realm heard wise Sukhrip and rejoiced because it matched his thought. He called the son of Pali in and proclaimed: "You, born of a line of mighty asura-power, are feared in all ten directions. Be the royal envoy and carry the message. Go speak to the yaksha king and hear what that asura will say." When he had spoken, he commanded Satphali, who had wisdom and tact: "Prepare a letter setting out the whole matter from the beginning, and give it to Angkhot the monkey."

Then battle-skilled Satphali bowed his head to receive the four-armed lord's command and wrote it as a royal letter.

When it had been completed according to the royal command, he wrote the golden-lettered document on palm leaf, placed it in a shining jeweled case, and gave it to the son of Pali.

Angkhot at Lanka

Then Angkhot, descendant of the Sun-line and of Kosi, bowed his head, received the letter gladly, raised joined hands, and took leave of the righteous lord. He came out from before the pavilion, passed beyond the soldiers and armies, flew up to half the height of Sattaphan mountain, and forced his way through the sky.

When he reached the city of Lanka, he displayed power like a great lion, came down to the ground, and walked toward the gate of the victorious city.

Then the demon gate-commanders, great and small, saw the monkey of mighty power, were frightened, and shut the gates.

Then the brave son of Pali cried out and proclaimed: "Listen, kumbhandas. I am an envoy commanded to carry the letter of the incarnate lord to your master Thotsakan according to justice and custom. Open the victory gate at once. I will go speak with the yaksha." Speaking so, he recited a powerful spell and transformed his body by his might.

His body became as great as Brahma, towering high into the sky. His two hands covered the sun, and Lanka grew dark and smoky.

Then the Ten-headed Sun-line lord sat on his shining jeweled throne among the kumbhanda ministers. Seeing the whole sky darkened and the sun's light blocked as if night were falling, the asura was puzzled and doubtful. He gave royal command to a senior demon minister: "You, hurry out and see the cause clearly."

Then Paowanasura the yaksha received the command, bowed, took leave, and went out to the royal forecourt.

When he arrived he stood still and looked through all ten directions. He heard a voice like a storm wind from the southwest gate. Not knowing the reason for it, the yaksha was even more astonished and hurried straight there.

When he arrived and saw the monkey displaying bold power, his body towering into the clouds, he asked: "Listen, monkey king. Where is your country and home? What is your name? Why have you come and done this?"

Then the radiant grandson of Thao Hatsanai heard and replied: "My name is Angkhot. I am the envoy of the incarnate lord, mighty in victory like a sharp discus, commanded to carry the royal letter of the glorious king to the ten-faced asura. The demons have shut the gate and will not let me go in to deliver the noble letter. Open it quickly and properly. I must hurry inside to speak to the yaksha king, hoping to settle the great war so that the soldiers and people will not suffer."

Then Paowanasura the yaksha heard and answered: "I understand that you are an envoy. Stay outside the city. You may not hurry in yet. I will go back and report to the crowned kumbhanda king."

When he had spoken, he ordered the warriors to guard the gate firmly. After giving the order he hurried back to the shining audience hall.

When he arrived, he bowed his head and reported to the Ravana-asura king: "Angkhot, son of Pali, the noble monkey, holds Rama's letter. He deliberately displayed power and covered the sun in the sky. He is now outside the gate, and his words are coarse and arrogant."

Then the brave Ten-headed Sun-line lord learned that victorious Angkhot had come as an envoy carrying a letter. His whole body froze in thought: "This one is extremely crude. If I let him enter, he may give offense, and there will be disgrace before all my ministers great and small. I must respond well and not cross him." Having thought this, he ordered the palace women: "Go tell heavenly Montho that Angkhot, her son, is carrying Rama's letter and is now outside the gate on the southwest side. Let her prepare food to welcome her child properly."

Then the lovely attendant women received the asura king's command, raised joined hands, and hurried away.

When they reached the young queen's palace, they bowed with folded hands and said: "The crowned king has sent us to inform the queen. Your son, named Angkhot the noble monkey, is now outside the city. The queen is to prepare food and send it to him."

Then fair and compassionate Nang Montho learned that victorious Angkhot had come carrying a letter and was frightened. She stood rigid, stunned and thinking, her mind burning like fire. "Today the king may be angered beneath the dust of his feet." Thinking so, she spoke to her serving women: "Prepare the royal food well. I will send it to my son."

Then the kitchen women on left and right received the order, raised joined hands, and left the young queen's palace.

Each attendant hurried at her own task, preparing savory dishes and sweets. When everything was finished, they put it on trays and carried it in.

Then lovely Nang Montho arranged the palace women, beautiful and shining in form, delicate and worthy of admiration, sharp in beauty like heavenly apsarases, their faces bright as the moon and every limb lovely. She had them carry the royal food to offer Angkhot the noble monkey and told them, "Say that all this comes from me, his mother."

Then the charming, beautifully formed women received the queen's command, bowed, and carried the food away.

When they came outside the city gate, they looked around in every direction and saw glorious Angkhot. All the women sat down and bowed. They glanced sideways, observing the noble monkey's behavior, and said: "Your mother has had us bring this food out to offer Your Mighty Highness with a heart full of joy. Please eat this delicious food and be happy and at ease."

Then wise and brave Angkhot heard the asura women explain the matter and answered: "I have been ordered to carry a letter and negotiate a major affair of state. As for forms, tastes, smells, and sounds, I have no delight in them. My mind is set on the royal business of the radiant incarnate lord. Go tell my mother that I have bowed in homage to her."

Then all the serving women heard the prince's words and answered: "Since Your Highness has come as an envoy to settle and end the great war, your mother was glad and sent us to attend Your Mightiness. If Your Highness does not eat, how could we servants escape blame?" As they spoke, they edged closer and used coy glances as a tactic.

Then Angkhot, grandson of Thao Kosi, heard the asura women teasing and pleading. He was enraged like cosmic fire, snatched out his royal sword, and lifted it high. He stamped his foot with a thunderous sound and cried: "You foolish, deceitful demon women. You do not fear that your lives will end, coming to coax me with such tricks." Speaking so, he leapt forward and chased the asura women.

Then the young palace women were terrified and lost their senses, running and dodging in confusion.

Food trays and golden vessels fell everywhere. They shrieked and trembled; some fell and collided with one another, scattered in every direction.

Then all the asura guards shut the gates and dropped the bars in confusion, commoners and commanders helping one another in tumult.

Then glorious and brave-hearted Angkhot cried out: "Listen, asuras. Go report this matter to the demon king. What command or message has your lord given? Why has he not told me? Why make me wait here so long and not open the gate? A city gate as small as this could never withstand my power. I could sweep it aside with only my left foot and it would collapse in an instant." Then he roared like a lion, displayed his bold authority, leapt, and kicked with his foot. The gate broke and crashed down.

The sound thundered through the demon city, and the earth shook and trembled. The monkey lord brandished his victorious sword and drove the gate-commanders into confusion.

Then the asura and yaksha ranks trembled in fear, lost their senses, and fled through the whole demon city.

Then Angkhot, mighty and brave-hearted, showed authority as if he were Death and rushed into the royal audience hall.

He stood in the middle of the yaksha ministers and did not fear King Thotsakan. He curled his tail into a shining seat and sat high, level with the asura.

Angkhot Reads Rama's Letter

When this was done, he spoke: "Listen, king of the yakshas. I am the envoy of Phra Chakri, the lasting crown of the world, the lord Narai incarnate, who will cleanse away the demon host with his arrows. He has now raised his army, crossed the ocean, and set camp at Marakat mountain. The glorious king has taken pity on the yakshas and sent me carrying a letter to speak according to dharma."

Then the Ten-headed Sun-line lord heard the fierce son of Pali, and the kumbhanda was filled with anger. He shouted: "Listen, envoy. Who do you think you are, and where have you come from? Do you not know glorious Angkhot? Why are you so arrogant? You are only of monkey birth, commanded to carry a royal letter. Why are you vile and base, bold enough not to bow? I am of the Sun-line of Brahma, famous in might through all worlds and heavens. Humans, garudas, nagas, and gods all bow to me."

Then brave Angkhot, skilled in battle, saw the demon commander boasting of his power. The monkey answered: "Listen, ten-faced yaksha. Do not speak so arrogantly. I am the envoy of the lord of the three worlds. Do not imagine I will bow to an asura. Bow your own head and listen to the letter, the command of the supreme Chakrakrit." Speaking so, the powerful monkey read the written letter with skill.

"Royal letter of the great Phra Hariwong, who rides the royal Garuda bird and takes Phraya Ananta Naga as his splendid throne, dwelling on the Milk Ocean near the foot of Mount Chakrawan, while rishis, gods, and vidyadharas gather, praise, and bow. They assembled and invited him from Vaikuntha into the royal lineage of universal emperors to cleanse away unrighteous asuras who had become thorns in the earth. He bears the name Phra Ramet, crowned lord of all three worlds, scion of King Thotsarot, lord of Dvaravati. Nang Sida of the beautiful face is the lovely Lady Lakshmi herself. The ten-headed asura king abducted the queen and kept her. Therefore he raised a hundred thousand soldiers and armies, crossed the great ocean, and followed to destroy life. Yet his heart was merciful, so he appointed a royal envoy to carry a letter, hoping to grant life to the yakshas. Let the asura respectfully bring the lady and offer her at Phra Chakri's feet."

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king heard the letter and burst into anger like fire. The asura ground his teeth and clenched his jaws: "You ugly Angkhot, darkened and deluded. He killed your father, and you call it true dharma and serve him. Montho is your mother. It is not that I can afford to lose you. When did Sida become your mother? Who abducted that woman? Before this, a small monkey came and spoke with arrogant words, saying he was an envoy carrying a letter. His name was Hanuman. Intharachit shot the naga-noose, bound him, and brought him in to be killed. Since we thought killing an envoy would damage the affair, we humiliated him and released him. I thought he would die on the road. Do you know anything of that? What lineage did that unlucky forest monkey even come from?"

Then the radiant grandson of Thao Hatsanai answered the kumbhanda: "Listen, Thotsakan, evil-hearted one. Fierce Hanuman, the son of the Wind, has terrible power like the bright sun. Thousands of your sons lost their lives, and demons lay dead across the earth. He deliberately let Intharachit capture him because he meant to burn your demon city. You still dare to speak shamelessly, with no embarrassment in your heart. Remember when you lifted Kailasa and Phra Isuan granted you a boon. You did not measure yourself or fear danger, and crudely asked for Lady Uma. Then you had to carry the Great Mother on your yaksha head and return her to Phra Isuan. The whole world knows this. Now again you have abducted the chief queen of Phra Ramet of the Sun-line. Phiphek remonstrated with true dharma, but you obstinately drove your brother away without care. You only do evil and wrong, with no thought for yourself, yaksha. Hurry and bring the lady to offer Phra Chakri, and you will preserve your life."

Then the Ten-headed Sun-line yaksha heard this and grew still more enraged. He answered: "This woman Sida has no child or husband. I was roaming in the forest, found her weeping, and she followed me. Out of pity I brought her with me; otherwise her life would have ended. As for sending the lovely woman away, do not trouble yourself by speaking of it. I possess noble power and strength, and my name is famous in all ten directions. What can common humans and ugly beasts do to me? Do not praise them beyond measure, as if I did not know them. Those two brothers are poor wretches, ugly ones wandering in the forest. They can associate only with these monkeys, boasting in deluded speech. They presume to fight the kumbhanda, bragging of courage and thinking themselves good. Among the soldiers who have skill of hand, you can produce only yourself, noble monkey, and that wretched Hanuman. Are there only those two? However many wild monkeys you have brought to contend for victory, they will perish by the hand of Kumbhakan."
