This is the forty-third สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Angkhot's final exchange with Thotsakan and return to Rama, Thotsakan's raising of Brahma's victory parasol, Sukhrip's mission to break the parasol and seize Thotsakan's crown, Thotsakan's humiliation and decision to summon Maiyarap, the journey of Nonyawik and Vayuwek to the underworld, Maiyarap's promise to help Lanka, and Chanthrapha's alarm when Maiyarap says he will fight Rama.

Angkhot Answers Thotsakan

Then Angkhot, strong and powerful, answered with fierce courage: "Listen, common kumbhanda. The army of Phra Chakrakrit is made entirely of mighty gods. They descended from divine mansions to become attendants of the Garuda-bearing lord. Even among the shining jeweled-crowned commanders, there are more leaders than many oceans can count; the massed battle troops are beyond numbering. They could scoop up Mount Meru, overturn the earth, and do it. The lord of the three worlds set his mind on fulfilling perfection; therefore he gave up his royal city and came out wearing the form of a rishi. Do not despise Phra Chakri as if he were without heavenly power. Listen, King Ravana-asura. When Phra Arjuna heard of you, you were defeated in power; he captured and bound you and carried you away. Ramasun was mighty enough to kill that godlike Arjuna, yet when Ramasun came to contend for victory he was defeated by Phra Chakri's power. As for Thut, Khon, Tri Sian, Kakana, Maricha, Sawahu, and the yakshas, whose hand was it that fought them and left the demon hosts dead across the earth?"

Then the twenty-armed lord heard this as if a trident had pierced his ears. The kumbhanda answered: "What sort of arrow was Rama's, that famed and powerful arrow that killed Thut, Khon, Kakana, Tri Sian, and Sawahu? They were back-country men from the borderlands, not famous for power or courage. The people of Lanka, the demon city, are all expert and practiced in battle. Each one has power by nature and knows holy arrows and sciences completely. They can fly, move through the ocean, and pass through all three worlds without waiting for anyone's strength. What can two humans do? Could they contend with me? They fled others and came to live in the forest, roaming about deceiving only those monkeys. If he truly has power, let him go back and first fight Phra Phrot for his own kingdom. Once he holds his city again, then let him come oppose the asura."

Then the radiant son of Pali heard the yaksha speaking only ugly arrogance. He pointed at him and said: "Listen, ten-faced one. Do not boast so loudly of courage. The arrow of the incarnate lord that destroyed Thut and Khon, and Tri Sian, Maricha, and Kakana: were they not your younger brothers, mother's brothers, and grandmother's kin? Why call them border people? Do not smear the truth with words. Phra Phrot, his younger brother, was given the noble city to rule according to their father's true oath, not from his own desire. Rama went out to walk the forest, and Phra Phrot followed him in grief until the rishis and gods were troubled and told the younger brother to return to guard the people, subjects, ministers, and Sun-line nobles. Phra Chakrakrit, mighty in power, walked the forest with his younger brother Phra Lak to suppress unrighteousness and end the deluded asura line. All three worlds know this together. Do not fabricate things, common one."

Then brave and powerful Thotsakan heard and answered with evil words: "You cursed beast, without shame or embarrassment. You dare name him glorious Narai, and you are vile and wicked, along with the monkey Sukhrip, your uncle. He wanted his own brother's wealth, so he joined an unrighteous man to kill him. You are his son by blood, yet you know nothing of gratitude to your father. Even I, though I am another, think of it with hatred pressed in my chest until blood nearly flows from my eyes. The race of unlucky beasts: who would count it as good?"

Then Angkhot, victorious and glorious, heard and answered the asura: "The lord of the three worlds did not set out intending to kill my father. The cause was an old fault clinging to him, a great punishment from ancient times. He had sworn that he would be struck by the arrow of the four-armed sovereign. The lord would have granted him life, but he had to bear a mark upon his body. My father fought to the death and would not let even a hair's-width wound touch his body. Therefore he entrusted me to my uncle beneath the feet of the righteous lord. Why bring this up, inventing slander for display? When my father was still alive, he once captured a certain kumbhanda. That one had ten heads and ten faces and a body like yours; you should remember him. He bound him, tormented him, and exposed him, letting me drag him around as a toy. Because he gave you the leftovers from the palace women, one lump each day, you survived. Do not be arrogant or pretend to know; you are fighting against Death himself. Even if Lasatian, your father, with all his brave power, came to help you, he too would lose his life. Common one, stop your arrogance."

Then the ten-headed Sun-line yaksha heard and was enraged. The asura ground his teeth, rose, pointed his finger, and stamped his foot. He ordered four strong ministers: "Seize that fierce-hearted Angkhot, who is so bold and arrogant. Split the monkey's mouth and pull out his tongue. Cut off his arms, cut off his head and hair, and impale him outside the gate, as that wretch deserves."

Then the four demon ministers received the asura king's command and all four entered to seize the monkey.

They slashed and stabbed, parrying and fighting; the combat was noisy and confused. They charged and pressed in, attacking without lowering their hands.

Then the battle-skilled son of Pali received them, guarded himself, and cut back. The monkey pressed into the fight in close quarters.

The earth and sky thundered. With boldness he seized the four yakshas: his two feet caught two ministers, and the monkey's hands caught two asuras. Like the mighty king of Garudas seizing strong serpents, he flew up through the clouds to the top of the great victorious palace.

He dashed all four down together. The Brahma-faced palace ornament broke and collapsed, unable to withstand it. Heads and bodies lay severed and scattered, falling to the ground.

Then he clapped his hands and cried mockery: "Listen, Thotsakan the yaksha. I would like to cut off your head and impale it at the pavilion, but I fear that would exceed the royal command of the incarnate lord. Therefore I leave the asura alive." Having spoken, he flew up into the sky.

He moved through the air, aiming for Marakat mountain, and came down to the ground with swift fighting power.

When he arrived he bowed his head to the supreme crown of the world at the proper time and said: "I carried the letter and went to speak with that kumbhanda. He spoke in arrogant and insolent words, vile, deluded, base, common, and fierce. Then he sent four ministers to crowd around, seize, and kill me. I met the yakshas with power, and all four asuras died." The monkey lord reported everything.

Then wise and brave Phra Chakri heard the grandson of Makhawan speak correctly and in the proper manner. "You have not failed the line of the god-king. Bold and brave in the field, alone you carried on war and made the monkey name famous. It was fitting that you were envoy; your words in negotiation did not fall short." Praising him, Rama gave a blessing: "May you last beyond the world, possess noble power, and make enemies lose to the noble monkey." Having spoken, he went into the golden pavilion.

Thotsakan Raises the Victory Parasol

Then King Thotsakan the yaksha saw the monkey's bold arrogance: he had killed four ministers and gone back. Shame and anger were bitter, yet he could not follow and repay him. He stood silent, burning and agitated in heart like the fire at the end of an age. Then he remembered the power parasol of his grandsire, its force unmatched by anyone; with it he would kill all of them.

Thinking this, he spoke royal words and ordered the demon ministers: "The jeweled victory parasol of mighty Thao Thada was granted to recover the demon city when a great war broke out. Worship it, bring it up, and plant it. The enemies will grow dark as in hell. Raise it in the middle of the city, let it hide their eyes as if Mount Meru blocked them, and levy piercing troops as an army ready to kill the enemy."

Then Mahothon the demon minister received the command of the lord of the earth, raised joined hands, and came out.

He arranged battle-powerful soldiers, each one able to turn over the earth. All held weapons and brandished them, prepared according to the royal command.

Then they celebrated and worshiped the parasol with offerings of fish and meat, decorated silver and gold candles, popped rice, flowers, and garlands.

When the auspicious time arrived, they beat the gongs. The asuras shouted loudly and raised the parasol in the center of the royal city. Darkness spread like deepest night.

Then brave King Ravana-asura, when the shining parasol had been raised, went in royal movement.

He entered to wash and bathe. He anointed himself with perfumes mixed with flowers, put on splendid trousers and a golden-edged waistcloth, with hanging ends and golden vine panels. His garment was patterned with medallion bands; breastplates, chest ornaments, and chains gleamed. Armlets and bracelets encircled his arms. He put on great rings set with diamonds, rainbow-bright jewels, and flashing panels, wore his jeweled crown with ear ornaments, and held divine weapons in his twenty hands.

When he was ready, he invited his two chief queens: "Beloved eyes of your elder, come see the army that has marched here, so it may be a sight for the queen's eyes." Speaking so, he led them from the shining golden throne, and the women attendants followed the demon king.

When they arrived, they mounted the jeweled parasol, splendid as the bright sun, together with the palace women and attendants, and looked out at Rama's soldiers.

Then lovely young Nang Montho examined the army and saw the fierce monkey ranks: noble Sukhrip, Chomphuphan, Hanuman, and strong Angkhot, with troops packed thickly around the righteous four-armed lord. The soldiers of the two cities were famed and mighty in battle; they were all gods become monkeys, able to scoop up Indra's world. They could overturn the four great continents and every universe. Alarmed as if she would sink into the earth, she turned her face and said to her husband: "Those two human brothers are of the Sun-line, emperor-lords, scions of King Thotsarot and grandsons of mighty Achaban, ruler of noble Ayutthaya. Their might surpasses the worlds and shakes them; they are brave and victorious through their arrows, crowned lords of Ayutthaya. My king, consider this well."

Then the ten-headed Sun-line yaksha smiled and answered: "My beloved, do not tremble with fear. I too possess noble power and strength; all ten directions cannot stand against me. What can humans the size of gnats do, with those forest monkeys? I will send only soldiers to fight them, cut down their whole army, and make their flesh and blood food for the kumbhandas, chewed up in an instant."

Then all the monkeys saw the clouding darkness, the sun's light blocked and the whole world darkened. It was a great wonder. They called out to one another loudly; some ran, some crawled in fear, and the monkey ranks were confused.

Then the lord of the three worlds sat on the shining jeweled throne among the military ranks. Seeing the sky darkened, the sun hidden in heaven, and the monkeys shouting in turmoil, the king pondered: "This wonder is like the time of vile and wicked Phirap. Or is it the trick of an enemy? It is strange beyond measure." He gave a royal command and asked Phraya Phiphek the yaksha: "Why has it become dark as night? What is the cause of this?"

Then thoughtful Phiphek heard the king's command, bowed, and reported: "This darkness through all directions comes from Thotsakan the yaksha's design. He means to secretly raise his army and come out in a fierce attack. Therefore he has raised the strange victory parasol to block the bright sun. We cannot see him, but the kumbhandas can see Phra Chakri's army. This parasol belongs to Thao Thada Brahma, the yaksha's supreme grandsire. Its power surpasses the earth, and it has existed since Lanka was founded. Let a victorious soldier hurry to break the yaksha's parasol. Then the sunlight will be clear. If we leave it too long, the affair will be harmed."

Then the lord who had conquered every realm heard Phiphek the astrologer say that the demon king had raised the victory parasol. He gave a royal command to all the monkey soldiers, great and small: "Who has the brave heart to volunteer and go break Thotsakan's parasol?"

Then Sukhrip, son of the bright Sun, heard the righteous lord's command, bowed, and answered: "Before this, fierce Hanuman, the son of the Wind, strong and powerful, went and offered the splendid ring at the feet of the queen. Angkhot carried the message, fought boldly, and killed four yakshas. I, your faithful servant, will volunteer this time. I will destroy King Thotsakan's parasol and break it down. Lord of the three worlds, let there be no anger beneath your feet."

Then the jeweled discus-lord heard the son of the Sun. The king rejoiced and spoke fair words, blessing the noble monkey: "You who are bright with power, go safely and have victory."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, the great soldier, received the blessing of the lord of the three worlds, bowed, and hurried out.

He displayed authority and power. His roar thundered in every direction. He flew up into the clouds and hurried away as if driven by the wind.

In a finger-snap he reached Lanka, the royal city. He saw the jeweled divine parasol standing high in the center of the city, with the ten-headed demon king, his chief queens, and the women attendants upon the jeweled parasol tiers. On the ground troops had been set as guards. He thought: "If I go in as I am, I will have to fight the kumbhandas and a great battle will begin. I must hide myself from their eyes so that they cannot see my body. Then the royal mission of the radiant incarnate lord will not fail." Thinking this, he recited a powerful spell, and the monkey lord transformed his body.

He became as large as great Brahma, towering high into the sky, and came down to the earth with formidable strength.

The asura and yaksha ranks could not see his body. Brandishing the shining jeweled sword, he walked along the road.

Then the yaksha city-guardian saw the mighty monkey, his body as great as Asakan mountain, rising high to the sky and displaying strong power. Fear almost ended the guardian's life; he trembled and lost his senses. He covered both eyes with both hands, unable to look at the noble monkey's face, and fled from the royal city to the slopes of Mount Chakrawan.

Then mighty, brave-hearted Sukhrip reached the jeweled divine parasol and sprang up to stand before the asura. He released the spell, displayed bold battle-power, brandished the mighty sword, pointed at Thotsakan, and cried out: "Listen, ten-faced one. You are loud, arrogant, and base. If you would fight the lord of the three worlds, why not go out and meet him in combat? Why come secretly to do such a thing? Are you afraid of his arrows? Now powerful Phra Narai, the king, has commanded me to come and cut apart your envious, wicked head here in the middle of your city, as a wretch deserves."

Then the ten-headed Sun-line yaksha saw Pali's younger brother speaking with fierce courage. He stamped his foot in anger and roared like thunder: "You unrighteous Sukhrip, deluded by desire. You exalt a human without shame and call him lord Narai. Stop boasting and claiming power; I do not fear your strength. Rama killed only Pali, but I am not like that. Since you are arrogant and want victory, where will you escape with your life?"

Then Sukhrip, son of the bright Sun, heard and answered the kumbhanda: "Listen, twenty-armed Thotsakan. Do not boast of your power against the bow-bearing lord. I, only his soldier, will fight you and will not let the Garuda-bearing lord be troubled." Having spoken, he stamped his foot as if Lanka would sink into the ocean, swung his victorious sword, and rushed to seize the asura's parasol.

Then the yaksha women attendants saw the monkey pressing in and fighting. Terrified, they ran in confusion. Some stumbled and scrambled up, eyes shut, faces pale, bodies trembling. Some fell; some clung to Thotsakan; some hung and swung from the rim of the victory parasol. They shrieked and cried, unable to regain themselves. Arms and legs broke in the confusion, and they wept and called to one another in tumult.

Then the ten-headed Sun-line yaksha did not know how to meet Sukhrip's power. Alone, his heart was anxious. He circled around the parasol's rim, dodging to keep the monkey from coming near. With one hand he embraced Nang Montho; with two hands he seized Nang Akki; with seventeen hands he held the attendant women, and with one hand he brandished his victorious sword, blocking the way to fight as the asura gave ground against the monkey.

Then battle-skilled Phraya Sukhrip saw the yaksha drawing back and not meeting the fight. The monkey pressed and charged. His right foot kicked Thotsakan; the demon lord staggered and lurched. Sukhrip stepped across and pursued him in a whirl, clinging close to the asura.

He acted as if he would suddenly snatch lovely Montho, moving close and reaching back and forth, laughing aloud and mocking the asura.

Then King Thotsakan the yaksha lost his stance and fighting order, outmaneuvered because he was guarding the young queen. Nineteen hands held the women; one hand brandished the divine sword, resisting and fighting in confusion.

He could not slash or stab well. He could only parry, dodge, and shift in disorder, forced to fight and endure, circling, retreating, and pursuing in confusion.

Then powerful, strong Sukhrip leapt and thrust, striking through and charging the kumbhanda with his might.

He swung the victorious sword like flickering fire, aiming intently to kill. He slashed and stabbed in combat, striking the asura's body many times.

Then King Ravana-asura fought with one hand in close battle, unable to stand against the power. The pain was beyond endurance. The yaksha king could not resist or hold; at the end of heart, strength, and thought, he would not fight close and retreated while defending.

Then the powerful son of the Sun saw Thotsakan the asura lose position in the contest for victory. His foot kicked the demon commander. He sprang and seized the top of the parasol, pulled it down with swift strength, and broke the crowned victory parasol.

The ten-headed kumbhanda, the palace women, and the queens fell to the ground, crying loudly, every one of them. The jeweled divine parasol was destroyed. The sky became clear everywhere; the sunlight brightened and shone all the way to the army and victory pavilion.

The monkey lord then used his right foot to catch and clamp the crown. Floating in the sky, he cried out in scorn to the demon commander: "Listen, ten-faced one. You boasted loudly of strong power. I would like to cut off your vile head, but I fear exceeding Phra Chakri's command. I will take only the crown to offer to glorious Phra Narai." Speaking so, he displayed his power and flew back.

He moved through the air, aimed for Marakat mountain, came down to the ground, and entered the shining pavilion.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet and told the supreme lord: "I went to break the kumbhanda's parasol and fought with King Thotsakan. When I thought of ending his life, I feared exceeding the command of the discus-bearing lord. Therefore I brought only the demon king's crown to worship the holy arrow of the four-armed lord, just as I had told Your Majesty before. Powerful king, please show mercy."

Then the lord who had conquered the three worlds heard the son of the Sun. The king looked and saw the demon commander's jeweled crown shining like the moon. He rejoiced because it matched his heart and said to the ministers: "Phraya Sukhrip, mighty in power, boldly broke the yaksha's parasol and destroyed the asura's design. His deed this time is very good. It is fitting for one of the Sun's line; his power will spread through all three worlds." Speaking so, he invited Phra Lak, turned, and walked into the pavilion.

Thotsakan Summons Maiyarap

Then King Thotsakan the yaksha had fallen to the earth, and the monkey had taken his crown. Shame and disgrace came upon him before all the ministers great and small. Hurt, bruised, and bitter at heart because he had lost stance and victory to the enemy, his anger grew tighter the more he thought. It was like a poisoned bullet lodged in the yaksha's chest. He led the women away and mounted the splendid palace.

He reclined on the shining jeweled couch of the nine gems, lying still and thinking in distress, sighing again and again: "This war with humans is formidable. Their soldiers are bold and brave, usable as the heart and eyes desire, swift in wit and wisdom. Before, that Hanuman deceived us and burned the royal compound. Then that wicked Angkhot dared to kill four ministers. This time Sukhrip came and broke the parasol that was the city's auspicious glory. Three times now I have lost advantage, and the enemy will grow still more bold. Ah, what a loss, that jeweled parasol. It cannot be found again in all three worlds." Thinking so, the yaksha king rested his hand across his face and did not sleep.

He kept rising and sitting, without peace, full of grief and sorrow, until the last watch, when the sun began to brighten the sky. Then he went to bathe, dressed in shining royal ornaments, took his powerful jeweled sword, and walked out to the audience hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the shining white parasol, while the asuras and kumbhandas gathered thickly and bowed their heads. He gave a royal command to the demon ministers on left and right: "This war of humans who have marched here is bold and formidable because Phiphek, my brother, has gone over as a worm eating from within. The enemy is so insolent because of that evil-hearted wretch. How can we destroy their leader and end his life? In Brahma's Sun-line, who is skilled in power? Who alone could secretly go in and kill both noble humans, without raising troops to fight, so that the enemy would be shattered?"

Then brave-hearted Paowanasura bowed his head to receive the royal command and answered the demon commander: "Within Your Majesty's Sun-line there is only Maiyarap the yaksha, scion of the Sakayawong asuras, ruler of the victorious underworld city. He is skilled in invisibility. He can hold his breath and vanish. Even if he casts sleep over the victory army, they will all sleep by the demon lord's spell. Let us go seek that demon king and bring him up to plan the assault. To secretly destroy Phra Ram and Phra Lak should then be easy and convenient."

Then the ten-headed Sun-line yaksha heard Paowanasura the minister and was glad because it matched his thought. He clapped his hands and laughed, then gave a royal command: "I had forgotten my companion, one who shares life with me. The city of the underworld is also of the Sun-line made by Brahma. But since Thao Sahamaliwan went to heaven, I have not gone back and forth, and Maiyarap, my nephew, has grown large. Nonyawik and Vayuwek, go down to the victorious underworld city. Tell my nephew that the royal city of Lanka is troubled by war, and invite him to come now."

Then the yakshas Nonyawik and Vayuwek received the command, raised joined hands, and came to the shining jeweled palace.

When they arrived, they ordered the asura grooms to harness fierce Nilaphahu and battle-skilled Vaiyikraisorn, saying, "We will go to the underworld region."

Then the brave horse masters bowed their heads to receive the command and ran out in haste.

They harnessed Nilaphahu, savage, fierce, powerful, and strong, and the horse Vaiyikraisorn, splendid in nine-gem trappings. The two stood like lion-kings, bold and restless, stamping and snorting like imperial horses of conquering power. When everything had been done according to the royal command, the nephews of Lanka's lord, skilled in battle, waited at the splendid jeweled mounting platform for the asuras to come.

Then the yakshas Nonyawik and Vayuwek came in graceful movement to the bathing place.

The two bathed in the water and wore sweetly fragrant perfume. They put on splendid trousers and different vine-patterned garments. Their coats were of shining cloth with small-sleeved panels; floating-pattern breastbands and gold-thread designs girded the chest. Breastplates, chains, naga armlets, and bracelets adorned them. Garuda-egg emerald rings, diamond headbands, and shining topaz alternated. Each wore earrings and ear ornaments, took up his powerful bow, and came out.

When they reached the jeweled platform at the right side of the royal seat, each mounted his horse and hurried out from Lanka.

O horses, royal horses: the two battle-powerful horses were like lions, of noble Sindhava horse-breed, soft-maned, long-tailed, and tight-hoofed. Testing their gait, excited and snorting, they leapt, wheeled, kicked, and bit. Their great stride was as swift as the wind, circling the universe in a finger-snap. They forced their way through the earth with brave battle-power. Their four feet stepped quickly and sprang straight toward the underworld city.

When the two asuras arrived, they dismounted from the bold horses and went with graceful movement to the inner council hall.

They sat down and spoke to the senior great ministers: "The crowned lord of Lanka has commanded us to come attend the demon king."

Then brave minister Chitrakut and wise Chitphairi heard the matter and came in together.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet and told Maiyarap the yaksha: "The ten-headed asura king, ruler of Lanka, has sent Nonyawik and Vayuwek, the two noble nephews, sons of Maricha the asura, to attend beneath your feet."

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha heard the great ministers and looked out. Seeing the two Sun-line nobles, the yaksha king greeted them: "Is the great lord of Lanka, master of the worlds, still complete and prosperous, or is there trouble beneath his noble feet? What matter has arisen in the city that he has sent you down?"

Then Nonyawik and Vayuwek the yakshas answered the command: "A royal danger has arisen in Lanka because of the two brothers Lak and Ram of the Sun-line of mighty Thotsarot, grandsons of King Achaban, ruler of noble Ayutthaya. They killed Kakana the asura, our grandmother's kin, and Sawahu our mother's brother, and our father Phraya Maricha. Then they pursued and destroyed the Sun-line kin of Phraya Tri Sian, Thut, and Khon. Now they have raised a monkey army, crossed the great ocean, and set camp close against the city. The battle is fierce and bold. The lord of the three worlds has sent us to invite Your Majesty to come."

Then brave-hearted Phraya Maiyarap heard and grew angry like the fire of doom: "Those common, ugly humans, how much power can they have, that they dare act so boldly, contemptuously insulting the Sun-line of yakshas? I will kill them and end their lives." Having spoken, he commanded the two princes: "Go tell the noble feet that a war of this size should not trouble the dust beneath them. Tomorrow I myself will attend the crowned lord of the worlds. I will volunteer to capture the enemies and kill them."

If a great war arises for Lanka or the underworld, did they in ancient times ever go help one another in battle, breaking and resisting the enemy?"

Then diligent minister Chitrakut and the kumbhanda Chitphairi heard the asura's words. Each bowed at the lotus feet and said to the yaksha king: "I am a koti years old, yet I was born afterward and do not know. This matter is secret; I have never heard it. Powerful lord, go ask your mother."

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha heard both asuras and gave a royal command: "Listen, skilled charioteer. Harness the chariot. I will go attend my mother at the great residence, the palace of Chand."

Then the noble yaksha mother heard her beloved son speak and said: "In the time of Brahma-born Lasatian, father of Thotsakan the yaksha, and your powerful grandfather, the asuras were kin. If war arose, each would help the other kill the enemy. But when King Lasatian died and Thotsakan ruled the great realm, he did not stay within the ten royal virtues and acted in wicked, crude ways. Thao Sahamaliwan was angry when he handed the city to your father and ordered him not to bind himself in love with deluded Thotsakan. He was only to honor him as kin. A hundred days would pass without visiting. Why have you come asking about the past? Hearing it, I am doubtful. What is the reason, jewel of my eyes, that you speak like this?"

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha bowed his head and answered his mother's words: "This is because the lord of Lanka sent two Sun-line nephews down with a command. They said that evil human brothers named Ram and Lak, grandsons of King Achaban, ruler of Ayutthaya, have killed the Sun-line yaksha kin. Then they boldly raised a monkey army, built a road across, and set camp at Marakat mountain. Therefore I asked my mother, so I may go help fight the enemies."

Then beautiful Nang Chanthrapha heard her son's words name King Achaban and say that he would go to war against Phra Ram, Achaban's grandson. She burned as if lying in the fire at the end of an age. The lady covered her ears, afraid her son would die. She turned her face and sighed deeply; her face turned pale at once, and she stood stunned, almost senseless.
