This is the forty-fourth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Chanthrapha's warning to Maiyarap, Maiyarap's march to Lanka, Thotsakan's request for sleep-magic, Maiyarap's ritual preparation of the sleep-drug and invisibility test, Maiyarap's dream and imprisonment of Vaiyavik and Phirakwan, Rama's matching dream, Hanuman's living fortress, Maiyarap's disguised scouting, and Maiyarap's abduction of Rama to the underworld.

Chanthrapha Warns Maiyarap

Then Maiyarap, holy and powerful yaksha, saw his royal mother's behavior and felt doubt in his spirit. He prostrated at her lotus feet and said, "Please show mercy to my head. Your beloved son spoke the name of Rama, victorious grandson of Achaban, and you turned your face away and would not speak. You would not hear good or evil, and covered both ears with both hands. Why is that, Mother?"

Then the noble yaksha mother heard him and explained the matter, telling it from ancient times: "King Achaban of the Sun-line, fashioned from Phra Harirak's line, had power like the fire at the end of an age, shaking heaven and the underworld. Once there was an asura-faced being, proud in power, vile, and bold, who roamed and trampled the whole universe. No one could withstand his power. The king went and cut off his head and set him to guard the lovely garden. This Rama of the Sun-line is the four-armed Phra Chakri. He came from Vaikuntha and the Milk Ocean, terrible in power through his arrows, to uphold the world forever. His might is famed throughout all three realms. If you go fight him, how could you withstand his power? Even hearing his name frightens the heart; I myself do not wish to hear it. That is why I covered my ears, afraid of the conch-bearing Phra Chakrakrit's power. Son, do not force a fight by strength. Stop and weigh the matter well."

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha heard the royal words and answered: "Why does my mother cut down the Sun-line so? How could I know where to put my face? The three worlds will pass judgment and mock us. You exalt only the human line, saying they are radiant, powerful, and brave, but they have dealt only with asura ranks who had no special power or skill. The crowned lord of Lanka is famous in might through all ten directions. As for Lak and Ram, grandsons of Achaban, will they dare stand and resist his power? This son too has force. I have subdued all the way to Dusit heaven. I do not fear the enemy's strength; I will go destroy their lives and kill them."

Then his beloved mother struck her breast and said, "Son, do not boast arrogantly of yourself. Come, I will tell you. Once, when Thotsakan the yaksha and Nang Montho were staying at a splendid window, there was a pair of sparrows perched before the yaksha. They mated according to bird nature, and Montho bowed her head in shame. Thotsakan gave a lion-roar; his ten mouths shouted until everything shook. The birds did not fly away from the asura's formidable voice. Montho saw this and wondered, then told Thotsakan the yaksha: 'A great omen has arisen. In time the yaksha line's noble, terrible power will decline, and humans will shine with holy power.' King Thotsakan did not believe his beloved wife and grew angry. She raised her hand and made a vow, invoking Lord Achaban. At once a sword floated in and cut off the birds' heads. The mighty Phra Chakrakrit cannot be compared even with your grandfather. If you insist on going to contend for victory, where will you escape with life, son?"

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha heard his royal mother and was angry like the fire at the end of an age. "If this were not my mother, I would kill her," he thought helplessly. He stamped his foot, ground his teeth, rose in anger, and came out. He seized the curved frame of the royal chariot, brandished it, and smashed it down before him. All thousand lions died beneath his victorious power.

Then he walked with royal steps like a brave lion-king, surrounded by soldiers and attendants, to the shining divine palace.

When he arrived, he spoke and ordered the great yaksha ministers to prepare the fourfold army, for he would march to the city of Lanka.

Then the demon ministers received the command, bowed, took leave, and came out from the audience hall.

They levied the bold fourfold army in proper battle order. Elephant officers harnessed fierce battle-elephants, choosing only rutting, dangerous ones. Demon mahouts rode their necks, all fierce, holding curved halberds and brandishing them; drivers held goads behind the howdah ropes. Every demon rank dressed in armor. Horse officers harnessed Sindhava horses, leaping, bucking, biting, and bold. Chariot officers yoked splendid chariots and stood holding lances. Infantry commanders inspected the asura battle troops, urging them on, bold and fierce as lions. They held spears, swords, guns, and maces, waiting for the asura to march.

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha, once the army had been arranged, came to bathe in the water.

Jeweled sprinklers poured water like rain. He wore sweet divine perfume, splendid curved-edged trousers, and a golden vine-patterned cloth. Hanging ends and side panels were patterned with swans; his coat was jeweled armor and gold embroidery. A jeweled breastband, chains, and three-tiered tassels lay across his chest. Gold direction-plates, armlets, and rings shone brilliantly. His diamond crown gleamed with clustered flowers; loops of earrings and ear ornaments hung down. He took up the great mace-weapon, bright in terrible battle-power, and left the splendid jeweled seat to mount the royal chariot.

O chariot, war chariot: its wheels and hubs were deep and ornate; the curved yoke was graceful and smooth. Tiered god-figures bowed with joined hands. It was yoked with four thousand lion-kings, all of lion breed. A victory banner was raised at the curved top, its tip waving in the sky. Charioteers held throwing spears and brandished them while driving in tumult. Royal insignia shaded the sun. Flutes and drums resounded with booms. The sound of chariots, elephants, horses, soldiers, and shouting echoed. They leapt and moved proudly, bold in excitement, and drove upward in a rush.

When he reached the city of Lanka, he halted the great army, descended from the shining jeweled chariot, and went in to attend the asura king.

Then the ten-headed Sun-line yaksha came out into the shining audience hall among the ministers. Glimpsing Maiyarap, his beloved nephew, the yaksha king was very glad. He rose from the splendid jeweled throne and came down to take the kumbhanda's hand.

He seated him beside him on the jeweled throne beneath the shining white parasol. They were beautiful like Brahma and Vessavana, and the two asuras greeted one another. Then he spoke sweetly: "Listen, radiant nephew, beloved one of my own line and life. Only now have we met. You rule subjects and soldiers in the underworld region. Are all our relatives and kin there still stable?"

Then battle-skilled Phraya Maiyarap heard the fair command, raised joined hands, and answered: "Your beloved nephew rules in prosperity; the people and subjects are complete and at peace. The Sun-line kin in the underworld are all happy and free of danger. As for Your Majesty sending down to seek me, where is the enemy army that has marched here? How has the battle joined in war?"

Then the twenty-armed yaksha heard and rejoiced. He gave royal words: "The human army that has marched here may have power and courage. If we raised troops and went out to fight, how could they withstand us? But in war, when strength meets strength, it is like splashing water against one another; do not imagine bodies will not be struck. Both sides may die in the contest for victory. That would bring no fame in the world and would shame the Brahma-line. You, who possess noble power and strong perfected spells, go cast sleep upon them and seize the humans. Kill them and end their lives."

Then wise and brave Maiyarap heard the royal command and answered the king's words: "A war as small as this is not heavy. Your beloved nephew asks to volunteer. I will seize both human brothers and bring them as the lord of the earth commands. But I will bow at your lotus feet and take leave first to perform a rite. Why should Your Powerful Majesty be anxious?"

Then the twenty-faced yaksha heard his nephew speak, was glad, embraced him, and commanded: "This is fitting for the Brahma-line; your name and might will be famous in the future. If the affair in Lanka succeeds, I will repay my nephew's service to the heart." Having spoken, he ordered a wise and tactful minister: "Feed the great army that has come from victorious Badan."

Then brave-hearted Paowanasura bowed his head to receive the royal command and hurried out.

He ordered the duty officers to tell the cooks outside and inside, left and right: "Prepare delicious royal dishes, and all the food for the army, fully."

Then the diligent kitchen women received the order and busily prepared everything. The chief cooks made royal food, setting out small and large service, savory dishes, sweets, sour fruits, and delicious fruit. When this was finished, they arranged palace women, dignified in form and bearing, to carry the dishes in procession and offer them to the lord of Lanka, the demon king.

Then the wise and brave Ten-headed lord invited his nephew, lord of Badan, to eat in victory and enjoy himself.

Then the lovely young palace women came in and poured liquor and wine, offering it to the asura king. Some women came close and attended, bowing at his noble feet. Others came to wave flywhisks and fans according to their assigned offices.

[Saming Thong]

The women entertainers sang, answering one another in a slow, flowing line. Plucked, bowed, struck, and wind instruments sounded across the hall; cymbals and clappers joined in rhythm. Drums answered one another in alternating sound, lovely as heavenly music. Laments and ornamented cries rose and fell, sweetly filling the spirit.

The dancing women danced, moving their hands, flicking fingers, and turning in postures. They circled like swans in motion, glancing from the corners of their eyes. Their graceful poses followed the pattern and enticed the yaksha king. They shifted into kinnari postures, moving as if along a shining cave, then cast out both soft arms, crossed and changed, circling and moving close to the kumbhanda king.

Then powerful Maiyarap ate while watching the dancers. Their skin was like that of divine kinnaras, their waists and forms splendidly lovely, dear and pleasing, with delicate, charming faces, beautifully curved and delightful to the eyes.

Then the outer cooks on left and right, once the army food was ready, carried it out in a bustle: liquor, meals, and great fried elephants, with dishes to go with the wine, all arranged in rows before the royal ground.

Then all the underworld soldiers, every rank and division, commoners and officers, drank until drunk and senseless. Some danced, some made loud music, clapped hands in song, joked and teased the asura women; every group of soldiers rejoiced.

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha, when he had finished eating and the kumbhanda spirit was pleased, bowed his head at the lotus feet and took leave of the Ten-headed lord. He went with graceful steps from the splendid golden palace.

He mounted and sat on the chariot throne, ordered the ten ranks of warriors to move, forced through the earth, and descended to victorious Badan.

The Sleep-Magic Rite

When he reached the divine mountain, he halted the great army and commanded trusted ministers to build the royal ritual hall. He ordered them to gather poisonous mushrooms, drunken mushrooms, and raised clods, and to find skulls of dead men to use as three hearth-stones for the fire where the drug-cauldron would be set.

Then Chittrakan the yaksha received the asura king's command, bowed, took leave, and went out.

He ordered the four asura police officers through every rank and division, great and small, to build the shining ritual hall according to the demon king's command.

Then the soldiers and warriors heard the royal command and ran about in haste, commoners and officers together. They built the royal ritual hall, broad, long, and bright, with thirty-nine shining rooms glowing red. In the center they set a throne-seat, bright up to the sky, with incense, candles, herbs, and medicines complete according to the manual.

Then powerful Maiyarap came down from the shining jeweled chariot and went to bathe in the Ganges.

He rubbed himself with fragrant water, sweet with the scent of flowers. Splendid in shining power, he wore a slanting Mori cloth, put on ritual cords, marked himself with powder, bound his hair in a rishi's topknot, fastened a shining loincloth, and wore splendid gem rosaries. In his hand he held the Padmarat tube, bright with shining radiance. Beautiful like a mighty Brahma, he walked into the ritual hall.

He set the metal cauldron according to the ascetic rite upon the ghost-skull hearth-stones, ordered music sounded, and kindled the fire. Flowers, incense, and candles were offered. Then he mounted the throne-seat, sat in meditation, slowed the breath in his nose, closed his eyes, recited spells and sciences, and gathered his mind.

When the full thousand recitations were complete, the earth shook and rumbled. Fire surged up brightly, and the great cauldron turned red like flame. He took the Padmarat tube, bright and radiant, performed the rite, and blew into the ritual cauldron three times.

Two beautifully formed women appeared, their faces shining like heavenly apsarases. Their waists and bodies were splendid and lovely. The kumbhanda led the two young women by the hand.

He mounted and sat with them on the jeweled throne, touched and enjoyed them happily, teasing and delighting as the demon king caressed them.

Then he halted and recollected himself, giving no attachment to desire. He brandished the mighty jeweled tube and immediately killed them.

He returned and sat on the throne-seat, bowed above his head, read the spell, gathered the senses, completed the thousand recitations, and blew.

A pair of elephant-lions appeared inside the great metal cauldron. They locked tusks with one another in the flames, roaring and shaking everything.

Seeing that this did not match the rite, the asura grew angry in tumult. He struck them with the powerful jeweled tube, and they died in an instant.

When that was done, he sat and gathered his gaze, controlling spells, charms, and formulas. After a thousand repetitions according to the manual, the yaksha blew three times.

By the power of the effective spell, royal lions appeared. The two fierce beasts fought in the middle of the ritual space.

Seeing that this matched the magical manual, he rejoiced and clapped his hands loudly. He brandished the shining jeweled tube and killed the lion-kings by his power.

When this was done, he cut out their hearts and combined them with leaves from trees: seven things that know sleep, together with all the astrologers' drunken mushrooms. He placed them on an emerald-colored grinding stone, recited the thousand spells, held his breath, and ground them according to the manual.

When the work was completed, the demon king laughed joyfully. To test and know the drug's virtue, he smeared it on his right shin and blew. A tiger appeared, baring its teeth, standing huge on four feet, its two eyes like flames, tongue flashing and whiskers moving as it roared.

Then he smeared it on his left foot. It became a striped cat, every hair gleaming. It twitched ears and tail like a machine and ran circling around the asura's foot.

He again took the drug and smeared it on the yaksha's left arm. It became a great naga with seven vast heads.

Then he smeared the drug on his right arm, and it became a Garuda bird, spreading and beating its wings in tumult as if it would peck the naga to death.

Then he smeared the drug over his whole body, and his entire body and shadow disappeared. The asura smiled brightly, glad that it matched his intention.

Then the asura and yaksha ranks could not see the asura king. Everyone cried out loudly: "Something is wrong! Where has our lord gone?" Each one was frightened and ran about looking for the demon king.

Then Maiyarap, powerful and brave-hearted, saw the troops running around searching. He clapped his hands loudly and cried out: "I am here. I have not gone anywhere. Why are you pushing around searching?" Having spoken, the asura king went to bathe in the ritual water.

He rubbed himself over every limb, washed the drug from the yaksha's body, cleansed away all stain and impurity, and dressed in shining jeweled ornaments.

Then all the asura warriors saw the demon king. They called to their companions in haste and told one another: "Just now our lord disappeared, and we were frightened, running around in trembling search." Some ran in and bowed. The kumbhanda laughed with joy.

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha, when the drug-grinding rite was finished, mounted the splendid chariot. He ordered the great army to move from the divine mountain and hurried horses and chariots back into the underworld city.

When he arrived, he stopped at the jeweled platform, splendid with pearls, descended from the shining jeweled chariot, and mounted the radiant divine palace.

He reclined on the shining divine couch while the palace women attended and massaged him, and the kumbhanda drifted into sleep.

When the last watch of night passed and birds cried clear voices, he dreamed that the beautiful moon shone, opening its rays and brightening the sky. There was a small star floating in the heavens, shining across the cloud-floor with light as strong as dawn. It moved above the sky, over the great moon, and poured out color that covered the moon's light so that the moon's disk could not be seen.

When he woke from sleep, he thought anxiously over the dream. Seeing it as a fierce omen, his heart moved back and forth in fear. He bathed and dressed in shining divine cloth, moved with royal steps, and came out to the great jeweled audience hall.

He mounted and sat on the throne-seat bright with pearls. Priests, ministers, and elder teachers bowed thickly before him. He spoke royal words to the chief astrologers: "Tonight I had a strange dream." He told it from beginning to end.

Then the honored old astrologers examined it with wisdom and understood that it was not auspicious. They bowed their heads and reported to the yaksha sovereign: "Your dream that the moon shone upon the earth means Your Majesty in power. The star that shone brighter than the moon means a royal relative. He will rise to rule in heavenly power in the great underworld city."

Then battle-skilled Phraya Maiyarap heard the astrologers' prophecy. His heart burned, and he sat stunned in thought. He pondered silently for a long time, then gave a royal command: "Among the Sun-line, close or distant, who might become an enemy to us? Examine and see whose sharp horoscope will make him lord over the kumbhandas and ruler of my domain."

Then the yaksha priests and astrologers received the command and examined every horoscope. They knew that Vaiyavik the asura would rule the underworld city, because Rahu was in Aries, the Moon was in the eleventh and unstained, and Jupiter joined the ascendant. By expulsion he had royal fortune and a configuration fit to rule the kingdom, greater than the Sun-line yaksha kin, and sharp in bearing and wisdom. They bowed their heads at the lotus feet and told the yaksha king: "The asura Vaiyavik's horoscope is supremely excellent. It appears he will rule the wealth beneath the great white parasol of glory, for the asura's birth chart is better than that of the Sun-line kin."

Then powerful Maiyarap heard as if someone had struck and cut him. The kumbhanda pondered: "If I leave him now, great disorder will arise in the future." Thinking this, he ordered the ministers: "Bring Vaiyavik and imprison him. His mother is that Phirakwan woman. Put her in fetters in the great prison too. When I have obtained the humans, I will have them killed together."

Then diligent minister Nonthasun received the kumbhanda king's command, bowed, and came out.

He imprisoned Phirakwan and her son Vaiyavik, putting them completely in chains, fetters, and stocks according to the asura's royal command.

Rama's Dream and Hanuman's Fortress

Then radiant Phra Harirak sat on the shining divine seat in the splendid pavilion. When twilight fell and the bright sun turned behind the mountain edge, stars filled the sky around the moon among clouds. A gentle wind blew softly with the fragrance of flowers; cool dew fell on the earth, and the king drifted into sleep.

When the last watch of night passed and birds cried clear voices, the gods moved his heart and caused a strange dream. He dreamed that the sun, ringed with a halo and free of clouds or stain, shone brightly; then fierce Rahu the asura suddenly seized it, clamped it in his mouth, and carried it away. Then Rama dreamed that he stretched out his hand and broke a parasol up to the Brahma-world, and that the royal feet went to the realm of nagas.

When he woke from the couch, he was astonished, alarmed, and thoughtful. He pondered the dream and was not free from doubt. He bathed and dressed, bright with shining radiance, and walked with royal movement to the golden pavilion.

He lowered himself onto the throne-seat, while the warriors attended before him. He gave a royal command to Phraya Phiphek the kumbhanda, explaining the matter of his dream and every omen he had seen. "The more I think, the more astonishing it is. Is this good or evil?"

Then thoughtful Phiphek heard the lord of the three worlds tell the dream's meaning. He examined it with wisdom and understood all good and bad in the matter. Raising his hand above his head, the asura reported to the crown of the world: "The dream in which the sun moved with a halo in the sky means Your Majesty, powerful one from Vaikuntha who came to subdue the yakshas. The dream in which Rahu the asura seized and attacked it means Maiyarap, nephew of Thotsakan, who will come and cast sleep on Your Majesty, carrying you to the underworld city. But there will be no danger. A loyal soldier will follow, kill the asura, and invite Your Powerful Majesty back to the victory pavilion. The dream of breaking the jeweled parasol as high as the Brahma realm is very excellent; it shows victory over the yakshas, the gaining of Lanka, and the death of the ten-headed asura. The royal feet stepping into the naga realm are also a great blessing; your glory will spread through heaven and the underworld."

Then wise and brave Phra Chakri heard Phiphek the astrologer and spoke royally: "If Maiyarap will carry me to the victorious underworld city, what plan is good to guard against that evil asura?"

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha heard the royal command, bowed at Rama's feet, and said: "The fortune of the day and age is very bad. Rahu over the ascendant is a great harm. Saturn's disorder reaching the Moon will bring danger at midnight. If we pass beyond a little after seven thum, the god will move from the sign; then the evil fault will be gone, and only lasting happiness will remain."

Then the bow-bearing lord of the three worlds heard Phiphek's prophecy and gave a command. He ordered the son of the Sun to levy guards, sit watch by the fires, and inspect until the night had passed.

Then Hanuman, victorious and glorious, heard Phra Chakri's command, raised joined hands, and answered the royal order: "I, your foot-servant, am counted among soldiers. I ask to volunteer for the incarnate lord, to guard against the danger of that evil kumbhanda and keep him from passing in to reach Your Majesty." Having spoken, he bowed; Sukhrip came out with him.

Hanuman stood among the army, raised joined hands above his head, closed his eyes, recited a powerful spell, and transformed his monkey body.

He rose high to the Brahma-world and grew as large as Mount Chakrawan. Below, under the ground, he reached to the ocean beneath the earth. His tail circled as a rampart, enclosing all the soldiers. The jeweled red-lotus pavilion he held inside his chest. His open mouth became the gate; the door-leaf that opened and closed was his tongue. Phiphek and Phra Lak sat guarding Phra Chakri. Sukhrip became the gate-commander, watching the noble monkey soldiers going in and out and inspecting every time, so that no enemy could disguise himself and mingle in. The eighteen crowned ministers and inspectors patrolled in tumult, at the passes and fire-stations everywhere, while the troops struck gongs and made rounds.

Then powerful Phraya Maiyarap, when evening drew near, went to bathe in water.

He wore rich fragrant perfume, sweet and spreading in scent. His trousers and garments were black sapphire, all made of shining divine cloth. He put on a coat dyed with herbs, bead necklaces, and gold-medallion chains. Direction-plates, breast ornaments, shining armlets, naga bracelets, diamond rings, and a jeweled crown glittered. Clustered flowers fell like rainbows, and his ear ornaments were finely made. In his hand he held the Padmarat tube, bright up to the sky, together with the sleep-casting drug. When this was ready, the asura hurried away.

He forced his way through the floor of the underworld. The earth shook in fear. He came up at the shore of the great ocean and pressed onward through Himawa.

When he reached Marakat Kiri, the yaksha looked left and right. He saw the monkey soldiers patrolling and meeting one another, sitting guard by fires all around. Officers and commoners were strict and alert. Not knowing the hidden key to the place, the kumbhanda crept in.

He looked and saw a rampart like high Mount Chakrawan. He was puzzled and doubtful: "Why can I not see the pavilion? Perhaps they have learned that I, a powerful one, will come up to cast sleep, and so they have made this power. I must examine the monkey lord's trick and device." Thinking this, the asura displayed power and flew up into the sky.

He flew up as far as the sixteenth Brahma realm, but the mountain-rampart's boundary did not end, so he flew back down by his power and forced his way under the earth.

He went down to Kalagni Rudra, but still found no end to the wall. Seeing no opening or trace at all, helpless, he came back up.

He crept softly along the path between mountains, hiding in the shadows of thick-leaved shrubs so the monkey soldiers would not see his body.

Then the noble monkey troops and soldiers were patrolling in the night, at every post, outer and inner. At even the sound of a branch breaking, they all turned and cut across to block pursuit, running in circles to search in confusion, officers and commoners loud in tumult.

Then holy and powerful Maiyarap the yaksha was frightened through his whole body and immediately crept back out.

When he saw a hidden corner, he concealed himself at the edge of the thicket near the foot of the shining mountain. He peered through gaps in the forest, spying on the monkey troops. They had ringed every pass and fire-station; slipping through would be difficult. "No matter. I will transform myself, disguise myself among the troops, and become a monkey, so there will be no suspicion. I will trick them and ask questions until I know clearly." Thinking this, he raised his folded hands, gathered his mind, and recited his spell.

His body became a little monkey, tiny like a wild forest monkey. He entered and disguised himself among the soldiers, and the asura wandered with the patrol.

He saw one monkey displaying power, opening his mouth into a great gate. There were gate-keepers stationed there. Everyone coming and going was inspected; names and faces were checked throughout. They counted bodies strictly, and all entering and leaving had identification. When the kumbhanda saw this, he was alarmed. He stood watching and examining but did not know what to do, so he wandered back and forth listening to the monkey commoners' speech.

Then the bold monkey soldiers went about making rounds and inspections. They struck gongs and shouted warnings to one another: "Our people, do not give in to sleep. The four-armed lord is under tight evil fortune. Help guard the righteous king so that no danger or stain reaches him."

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha heard the monkeys speak. The asura asked deceitfully, "When will the fixed evil time pass, the time the astrologers predicted in the royal life? Then we can lie down and close our eyes in comfort and ease."

Then the monkey ranks, great and small, said: "Listen, unlucky one. Where are you from, asking like this? Only when the last watch has passed and the sun's bright light begins to glow will Phra Chakri's evil fortune pass, according to Phiphek's prophecy."

Then battle-skilled Phraya Maiyarap heard the monkey's words and rejoiced as if he had gained Indra's palace. He thought, "I will make a trick to deceive the monkey troops and make them all sleep by the radiance of the red-lotus jewel tube." Thinking this, the asura withdrew.

When he was out of the monkeys' sight, he changed back into yaksha form, kicked and sprang up through the clouds, and went to Mount Solat Kiri.

He stood on the mountain peak like a royal lion. Taking the shining Padmarat tube, the asura brandished it back and forth.

It glowed like a sparkling star, bright and shining in the sky, catching the light of the stars in the last watch of night.

Then the brave monkey troops guarding the incarnate lord saw the bright light in the sky. Thinking it was the morning star, officers and commoners rejoiced: "Now the four-armed lord's evil fortune is ended!" The monkeys pointed and told one another in excitement.

The great army did not understand the asura's trick. Believing it true, they were glad and did not patrol or inspect. Some lay down and some sat in groups, teasing one another and laughing. Some gathered to smoke cannabis; some closed their eyes and warmed themselves by the fire.

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha, when he had finished waving the jewel tube, flew back.

When he arrived, he stood far away, hidden by thick leaves of a banyan. He saw the monkey soldiers no longer inspecting one another. The guards by the fires were all quiet; no gongs, drums, cymbals, or lutes sounded. Some were awake, some asleep and grinding their teeth. The kumbhanda crept in slowly. Seeing some monkey troops still speaking and not asleep, walking quickly to and fro, he was alarmed and withdrew.

He stopped and stood upwind, acting according to yaksha magic. He poured the sleep-casting drug into the jeweled tube and blew.

It struck the monkey king's soldiers. They all became dazed and could not withstand it. The whole victory army slept deeply, senseless and without awareness.

Then he went in, dragging and testing them among the noble monkey soldiers. Seeing that they lay still and did not move their bodies, the asura walked in.

When he reached the Wind's son's mouth, he stopped and looked left and right. He recited the sleep-casting spell, poured the drug into the tube, and blew.

It struck Phraya Sukhrip, who sat asleep, together with Hanuman the great soldier. The asura was glad and entered the monkey's mouth.

When he reached the golden jeweled pavilion, shining bright, he saw the troops and soldiers sleeping piled thickly together. Only Phiphek the yaksha commander and younger Phra Lak sat by Phra Rama's feet. The asura hid and crept near. He put the sleep-casting drug into the tube, peered from concealment, and came close. Then he recited the victorious spell, held his breath, and blew three times more.

It struck Phraya Phiphek the yaksha commander and radiant Phra Ram and Phra Lak. They slept senseless by the battle-skilled asura's spell.

He was delighted and joyful, clapped his hands, laughed, and walked softly with the tube up to the golden pavilion.

He gazed intently at Phra Lak. His face was like a divine painting, his yellow skin shining like gold, his whole body beautiful and lovely. Then he glanced at Phra Ram, splendid, elegant, and radiant, his green body gleaming like dark sapphire. "These two young men are only this small," he thought. "Why did my mother say they have more power than yakshas? If I kill them, their lives will end in an instant." Thinking so, he displayed his might, scooped up elder Phra Ramet, placed him on the asura's shoulder, and came out through the monkey's mouth.

He forced through the earth by the power of the battle-skilled demon commander, crossed the checkpoints and forest paths, and hurried away to his city.

When he arrived, he spoke and ordered the great yaksha ministers: "Put this little human in an iron cage in the palm grove. Levy one koti powerful asuras to guard him through the night. Watch for any dangerous event; do not trust anything. As for that asura woman Phirakwan, make her draw water and put it into the great cauldron. Set it in the victorious royal forecourt. At dawn I will boil the human with her child, and end their lives." When he had finished giving orders, he went to his pleasant sleeping chamber.
