Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the forty-fifth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Hanuman waking after Maiyarap's sleep-spell, Phra Lak's lament when Rama is missing, Phiphek's counsel to send Hanuman down to Badan, Hanuman's breaking of the underworld gates, his meeting with Matchanu at the inner pool, Phirakwan's lament for Vaiyavik, Hanuman's entry into the city as a lotus filament, and Hanuman's discovery and removal of Rama from the iron cage.

Translation

Hanuman Wakes and Phra Lak Laments

Then the brave and mighty Wind's son, struck by the dust of the sleep-drug, lay with closed eyes, dizzy and senseless. When the wind blew, he woke and recovered his body, and called Sukhrip, his noble monkey uncle: "This is strange beyond all measure. Just now I dozed and slept. Perhaps brave Maiyarap slipped in and cast his spell. Uncle, do not rest easy. Go and look upon Phra Chakri."

Then the powerful son of the Sun heard Hanuman calling. He started awake at once, shocked and rigid in thought, his heart burning as if seared by fire. His mind was not in order, and the monkey lord hurried to the pavilion.

He saw the hosts and soldiers, the monkey troops to left and right, sleeping and not waking, scattered everywhere upon one another. Phraya Phiphek the yaksha commander and radiant Phra Lak were asleep beside the jeweled couch, but the Garuda-borne lord had vanished. Shocked, he called Hanuman and the monkey soldiers, small and great. Then, grieving and full of longing, he went in and woke the younger prince.

Then Phra Lak, lord of the Sun-line, started awake from sleep, looked around, and did not see Phra Chakri. Shocked as if Yama himself had come and struck the crown of his head, his senses scattered, and he grieved, crying out in lament.

"O my elder brother, lord above me. We left the city and its lands and endured hardship together in the terrible forest. Ten-faced Thotsakan stole my sister and took her into royal Lanka. We two brothers suffered and followed him here to destroy the asura. We gained armies and hosts, the monkeys of the two splendid cities, and marched across the great ocean to fight and take vengeance on him. Yet before we could even make war and subdue Rapana's deluded line, how could these bold villains secretly steal away the righteous king? By now, how much sorrow and pain must the crowned lord be suffering? Are they tormenting and abusing him, or will they kill him and bring ruin? If the discus-bearing Phra Harirak has passed away and his life is ended, why should I live on in torment? I will give up my breath and follow him to the city of heaven, escaping disgrace and shame before all the three worlds." As he cried out, his grief was so great that he seemed about to lose his senses.

Then Sukhrip and Hanuman, the noble monkeys, together with the eighteen crowned monkey chiefs, grieved and cried out in love for Phra Chakri: "O lord, crest-jewel of the world, whose power spreads through every direction, how could a vile asura secretly cast sleep upon Your Majesty and take you away? It was wasted strength for us to be soldiers, for we could not guard your lotus feet. It was a defeat for all our power, sold uselessly beneath the feet of the four-armed lord. The three worlds will criticize and despise us, and slight the bow-bearing lord. The Sun-line race of monkeys has lost its honor; who will ever count us good?" As they lamented in grief and longing, every troop of the noble monkey army raised a tumultuous sound as if life itself were about to die.

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha, still sorrowful and grief-stricken, slowly came back to his senses. He bowed his head in homage and said to the radiant younger lord: "The noble Phra Chakri is not one whose life will be destroyed. Restrain and extinguish this burning grief; do not mourn and weep in separation. Let brave Hanuman follow the righteous lord down to Badan. That asura Maiyarap will lose his life, and the fame of the incarnate lord will spread throughout the earth."

Then radiant Phra Lak heard Phiphek the asura, and the king's grief eased a little. He gave command to the Wind's son: "Mighty one whose dread power shakes the earth, go quickly after the lord, down into the city of Badan."

Then the brave son of Phra Phai received the command of the incarnate lord's younger brother and bowed with devotion at his lotus feet. He asked Phraya Phiphek the asura, in full detail and without doubt left in his heart, about the road by which he should go to the yaksha city.

When this was done, he bowed at the lotus feet, took leave of Phra Lak the younger prince, came out from the golden pavilion, displayed his power, and hurried away.

Hanuman Breaks the Underworld Gates

He carefully inspected the sign that Phiphek the kumbhanda had given him. Reaching the beginning of the forest road, he looked and saw a lotus pool. One lotus blossom was as large as a chariot wheel, fresh-blooming, pure, and sweet in fragrance. The wise monkey lord broke the stem and passed through it by his power.

He saw a laterite wall surrounding the place, with forts, camps, moats, and embankments packed solidly together, all made of stone, with thousands of yakshas on guard. He drew out his diamond trident and brandished it, displaying terrifying power. He pressed in, struck hard, fought, broke through, and beat down the asura outpost.

Then the asura yaksha troops saw the white monkey coming to make war, beating down their camp and destroying the fortification. Each of them raged in anger, drew weapons, and showed his courage. They rushed together, leaping and springing out to pursue and attack the monkey. They hurled weapons in tumult, shot arrows, stabbed with spears, javelins, and tomorns, and hacked in confusion.

Then mighty Hanuman, the great soldier, dodged and slipped with nimble speed, turning and pursuing the asuras. Kicking, biting, cutting, and stabbing in the press, by the strength and battle-power of the noble monkey, they died crushed on one another, senseless, until all the kumbhanda soldiers were finished.

When he had destroyed the gate-wall and killed the demon host dead, the monkey lord hurried on, forcing his way along the road.

Looking aside, he saw an elephant, huge and high-tusked, blocking the way. It trumpeted with a thunderous uproar, its two eyes like the dawn's light. Hanuman roared a lion-roar, his voice echoing until the earth shook, then brandished the trident, leapt forward, and rushed in to seize the elephant.

Then the asura elephant, fierce and vigorous, crazed, bold, and drunk with must, charged in to fight the monkey.

Its four feet kicked, its tail lashed, and it exerted power like a lion-elephant. With trunk and tusks it stabbed and battered in the melee, fighting with all its hostile strength.

Then Hanuman, victorious and skilled, dodged nimbly at the right moment. The monkey lord stepped onto the brave elephant's tusk, climbed up with mighty strength, and boldly broke the elephant's neck. It fell upon the ground and died, its life and breath ended.

After he had killed the elephant that served as a gate to the yaksha city, he rushed along the road with swift power.

Fast as a driven wind, he reached the place where the great roads joined. Puzzled and doubtful in his heart, he looked and saw mountains clashing together. Sparks and fierce flame flashed. The sound rang out in a roaring crash. Flame shot up in brilliance without smoke, hot as the sun at the end of the age. He went straight toward the mountains, not fearing that the fire would kill him, displayed triumphant power, and sprang up to the mountain peaks.

With feet kicking and hands breaking by force, the mountains shattered and fell entirely. Their crash shook as far as the sixteen worlds, and the burning fire went out at once.

When he had broken the clashing mountains that formed a yaksha boundary-gate, he hurried on through the night along the road.

He looked and saw mosquitoes as large as hens, a great swarm flying and crossing before him. The powerful monkey lord rushed in to slaughter and destroy them.

Then the fierce swarm of great mosquitoes, angry as the fire at the end of the age, flew up and clustered around him to strike.

Their cries echoed through the air. Intent on drinking the noble monkey's blood, they rushed and struck all over the monkey's body.

Then mighty Hanuman, skilled in battle, saw the mosquitoes swarming in to attack him and crushed them with both hands in confusion.

Their heads were crushed and flattened, their wings torn off, and they fell scattered beyond counting. The mosquito swarm's life ended through his victorious power.

When he had broken the evil mosquito-gate, the brave son of Phra Phai set his aim on the road to Badan and sprang swiftly onward.

Matchanu at the Inner Pool

He saw a broad square pool covered with lotus filaments. Lovely buds, blossoms, and seed-pods rose everywhere, alternating with one another. Phra Phai's wind blew gently, carrying a faint fragrance that soothed the heart. Hanuman grew doubtful and could not tell where he should go. He glanced left and right in every direction and inspected all around the great pool. Seeing no trace, he was at a loss and circled back and forth.

Then brave-hearted Matchanu, who lived in the river-pool as the guard of the inner gate, made his midnight round along the great road as usual. Displaying his mighty power, he rose from the water's depth.

Reaching the edge of the pool, he stopped and looked around every place. He saw the arrogant white monkey who had passed the gates and come along the road. Angry, grinding his teeth and stamping his foot, he stood in power across the way and shouted: "Hey, bold villain! Where do you think you are going? Are you not afraid your life will end? You brazenly pass the kumbhanda's gates. I will cut you down into scraps beneath my hand."

Then mighty Hanuman, skilled in battle, saw the small monkey rising from the water and boasting of hostile power in arrogance. He thought, "Why does this monkey have the tail of a fish? His form is bold and strange to the eye, and his words are crude and proud." He shouted, "Hey, little monkey! You do not seem to know that you are a child. Do not block my way. Stand aside, worthless one."

Then brave and mighty Matchanu heard and grew angry like the fire at the end of time. He clapped his hands sharply and answered, "Though I am this small, I do not fear your power. Do not be proud and arrogant; we shall see who is best." Having spoken, he displayed power until earth and underworld shook, leapt forward, and attacked.

Then Hanuman, victorious and skilled, grew angry like fire. The monkey lord met and grappled with him. Both sides moved nimbly, each brave in battle; each took his turn in power and neither yielded.

Then powerful Matchanu wrestled, pressed, and struck in close combat, dodging at the right moment. He kicked, bit, threw, and tangled with him, springing into battle without retreat. They clasped and battered one another in tumult, changing holds and stances as they fought.

Then brave and mighty Hanuman fought on, pressing into the melee, leaping and driving a kick with his foot. It struck Matchanu and made him stagger, but Matchanu seized both of Hanuman's feet, left and right, and smashed him down against a stone slab with his hostile strength.

Then victorious Matchanu was not bruised in his body. Angry like the fire at the end of an age, he sprang up, stamped his foot, showed his power, and gave a cry like thunder. He rushed in, turning and pressing the attack, fighting without thought for life.

Then the brave and mighty Wind's son rushed to meet him, turning and shifting back and forth in battle.

As he fought, the noble monkey reflected in his mind: "Why does this little monkey not lose his life? He is tough, enduring, and strong enough to fight with me." Thinking this, he cried out and asked, "Hey, little monkey, small as a fly! Why are you here guarding the gate of Maiyarap, the deluded demon-lord? What is your Sun-line clan and race? What is your name, monkey?"

Then Prince Matchanu, skilled in battle, heard the question about his name, his family, and his mother and father. He thought, "This monkey is powerful, bold, and brave. He has broken through the gates and come down to the great city of Badan. His body is like mine, and his two ears shine. Could he be the Surakan-earring one, as my mother once told me? If I stay silent now, I will learn neither good nor evil." Thinking this, he called back: "I am named Matchanu in my youth and strength, son of the lovely fish-lady. She cast me up at the edge of the sea, and mighty Maiyarap found me. He raised me as his adopted son and placed me here at the yaksha boundary-gate. My powerful father is named mighty Hanuman. You are a monkey. What is your name, that you dare come into the hands of Death? Are you not afraid your breath will end?"

Then mighty Hanuman, the great soldier, heard him clearly and had no doubt. He rejoiced as if he had gained the rim of heaven. He examined the child's face and love swelled in him. He clapped his hands and laughed back and forth: "Alas, how could this come to be? Listen, Matchanu, apple of your father's eye, radiant child. Do not be angry and fight. I am noble Hanuman. Blessed fate kept us from killing each other. The wise gods have brought us together."

Then powerful Matchanu heard the son of Phra Phai. He ground his teeth, pointed at him, and cried out, "Look at this monkey! You can lie in speech after all. Your words are crude and shameless; who would believe you, monkey? If you can yawn and make stars, moon, and sun appear clearly before my eyes, then I will believe you are my father, soldier of the four-armed incarnate lord."

Then the brave and wise Wind's son heard Prince Matchanu speak his doubt. He received the child's spirit and said, "Beloved child of your father, do not doubt." As he spoke, he flew upward and stood in the air by his power.

He yawned into stars, moon, and sun moving bright across the sky. When this was done, he came back down at once to the ground.

Then victorious Matchanu saw clearly, just as his mother had said. Glad, he ran in, raised his hands above his crown, bowed his head, and paid homage with joined palms. "Your son did not understand clearly, so I fought with my father. This fault is very great. Your beloved son asks pardon. Do not let it become karmic enmity for me hereafter."

Then mighty Hanuman, the great soldier, drew his son in and embraced him, stroking him over his whole body. He welcomed his spirit, kissed him, and looked on his face. "Apple of your father's eye, radiant child, you fought your father because we did not know one another. Each of us protected himself, fearing his life would end. Whatever mistake has happened, I place no punishment or blame on my beloved son. Your father cannot stay long. I must hurry after the discus-bearing lord and kill Maiyarap, the yaksha lord who stole him away. You, child, stay here in peace; do not be troubled or sorrowful. My jewel, tell your father the road to the city of Badan."

Then Matchanu, thoughtful and well-disposed, listened and felt blocked in his heart. He bowed and answered: "This matter is difficult beyond thought. My father, have mercy on my head. Phraya Maiyarap the asura raised me until I grew. His merit toward me is like that of the father who brought my head and hair into being. To tell the road would make me one without gratitude. The way by which Father came down is still there. Examine it carefully, and you will know by your own wisdom."

Then the brave and mighty Wind's son heard Prince Matchanu speak in indirect words. The powerful monkey lord stood silent in thought, then understood. He quickly broke a lotus stem and passed through the pith of the lotus.

Phirakwan's Water-Jar

When he reached the pool near the gate of the yaksha palace, he saw the asura soldiers patrolling all around the royal city. He stopped and stood in thought: "If I go straight in to fight the yakshas with power, how will I know news of Phra Chakri, or where he is? I must make a trick, hide myself, and listen carefully." Thinking this, he stood at a distance, gathered his mind, and concealed his body.

He went and hid by an ashoka tree, waiting to hear the yakshas speaking to one another as they came in and went out by the landing-place of the lotus pool.

Then Phirakwan, the yaksha woman, was imprisoned in doubled misery together with her beloved asura son. She lived in a harsh prison-house, suffering as if her heart were broken. Maiyarap, king of the yakshas, had ordered her to draw water and put it in the pan to boil her son to death together with lord Phra Rama. Carrying the water-jar, she walked out through the city gate.

When she reached the lotus pool, she sat down by the shining water and thought of her beloved son, her life-companion. She beat her breast and lamented: "O Vaiyavik, my child, dear one and summit of my love. It was wasted labor that I nourished and raised you until your years increased. How could Maiyarap, demon-lord, think such a vile and wrongful thing? You have no guilt even as fine as a fiber, yet he slanders you and will destroy your life. Alas, I pity you, child. Tomorrow morning you will die, together with lord Phra Rama. There is no one who can help. I have reached the end, my jewel; there is no escape from the yaksha's command. If your life ends, I your mother will not live. I will die with you, so all the worlds may see it clearly. If I lived on, my body would suffer and tears would pour from my eyes at every moment. Tomorrow you will leave my breast. Where will your mother ever see your face?" As she cried out in utter grief, she seemed about to lose her life.

Then the created son of Phra Phai saw the woman grieving and lamenting, speaking the name of Phra Rama and saying that at dawn his life would end together with Vaiyavik, the yaksha lord. He released the spell that concealed him from sight and walked in to her at once.

Sitting down, he spoke: "Grandmother, do not grieve and weep. I am a soldier of the lord of the earth, whom no one can withstand in war. My name is Hanuman, skilled in battle. I have come after the bow-bearing lord, because powerful Maiyarap brought the king down here. I do not know the place where he is, and I am at a loss searching for him. Lead me into the city; I will kill Maiyarap and end his life. I will save Vaiyavik from death, and you, Grandmother, will live in happy prosperity as mistress over the asura host in the city of Badan."

Then Phirakwan, summit of pity, heard mighty Hanuman speak and her sorrow eased. She was glad and joyful, as if she had gained the wealth of heaven. She said, "Brave Maiyarap took the lord and placed him behind the asura city, in the palm grove, inside a great iron cage. Asuras guard him within and without. To bring you in there will be very hard, because the kumbhanda gatekeeper weighs all who pass, testing whether they are light or heavy. If you fly over the yaksha wall, the death-wheel will strike you. Even if you transform into a fly, do not think you will get past the yakshas. Wise monkey lord, consider this carefully so the work is not spoiled."

Then the brave and wise Wind's son heard Phirakwan the demon woman speak clearly and had no doubt. He said, "This much is not difficult. I can think of a way. I will transform into a lotus filament clinging to your thin shawl and enter without their suspecting. If the weight is heavy and the scale breaks, say this: 'This beam-scale has stood here since ancient times; it is old, worn, and decayed. I have brought no one into the royal city. Look for yourselves, demon lords, and do not falsely speak against me.'"

Then Phirakwan the yaksha woman heard the soldier of Phra Chakri and rejoiced. She answered, "This plan is excellent. I will answer just as you say. Quickly transform your body, and I will lead you on foot."

Then mighty Hanuman, skilled in battle, raised joined hands, recited a powerful spell, restrained his mind, and transformed his body.

He became a lotus filament clinging to the thin shawl of Phirakwan the yaksha woman. By the power of the mighty spell, the asuras did not see his body.

Then Phirakwan the yaksha woman used the jar to draw water and came up carrying it away.

Then the asura yakshas guarding the great gate saw fair Phirakwan returning from drawing water. They put the water-jar and the woman herself upon the yaksha scale and weighed them against the stone weight, as they always inspected.

When the weighing machine grew very heavy, it cracked and broke on the spot. The water-jar shattered completely, and the asuras rushed in to seize her in confusion.

They set up a charge and threatened her with questions: "Woman, what wrong have you done? Have you brought someone in, or what? Speak the truth."

Then Phirakwan the yaksha woman raised her voice and argued back at the asuras: "Why do you accuse me like this? I came alone, as you yourselves can see. Your yaksha weighing machine is older than a hundred thousand years; it is no good and broke by itself. Whom will you blame? Alas, you see me fallen into misery and take advantage of me. Do whatever you like. I have no attachment to life."

Then the vigorous demon gatekeepers heard the woman insist so fiercely, and they did not understand the trick. Each of them thought it true and had no doubt. They only looked from face to face and did not answer the lady.

Then Phirakwan the yaksha woman kept arguing while hurrying on and came in through the victory gate.

When she reached the royal forecourt, she pointed out the way to Hanuman the great soldier: "Mighty Phraya Maiyarap is asleep in his bedchamber. Vaiyavik the kumbhanda is locked fast in prison there before it. That is the palm grove behind the city, where the yakshas have placed Phra Chakri."

Hanuman Finds Rama

Then the brave and mighty Wind's son raised his hands above the crown of his head, and the monkey lord recited a spell to conceal his body.

By the power of his spell-knowledge, both his body and his shadow vanished. He hurried after Phra Narai to the rear of the kumbhanda city.

When he reached the palm grove, he saw the demon guards tightly posted. They sat and lay in rings many layers deep, taking turns to block the way and patrol. The powerful monkey lord raised his hands above his crowned head and recited a spell to cast sleep upon the demon host.

The sound thundered through the sky. Darkness spread through every direction, and all Badan grew cold, as if winter had come.

Then the asura troops were struck by brave Hanuman's spell, which made their eyes and minds grow dim. Rank and officer alike fell asleep upon one another. No one moved or made patrol. Some snored, some groaned, all senseless and without awareness.

Then the victorious son of Phra Phai, after casting sleep upon the asuras, walked in.

He saw the noble lord of Hari's line sleeping inside the great iron cage. He bowed down at the king's feet, pressed his face there, and wept in grief.

[O]

"O crowned lord, famed in power through all ten directions, refuge of humans and devas. How can you be lying in a cage? Alas, it wounds the heart to see your body covered with dust, without royal garments or a bed for sleep, not even leaves to support your body. It was wasted effort raising countless battle-skilled soldiers beneath your splendid feet. We knew that Maiyarap the asura would go up secretly by night to cast his spell, yet together we could not guard you. It was a defeat for all our power to fall asleep by spell-knowledge. Because of that he could bring Phra Chakri to the yaksha city. Otherwise, how could any asura have escaped down here into Badan? I will strike and kill him with the diamond trident, cut off his head, and set it before the forecourt. That will suit the worthless one who grew arrogant in his heart." As he lamented, tears poured from his eyes. He pressed his face down and sobbed in grief, as if he would lose his life, senseless and without awareness.

When his great grief eased, he bowed in homage above his crowned head, broke the cage, lifted Phra Chakri, and carried him away by his mighty power.

He hurried out from the demon city and reached Mount Surakan. Going straight down to the foot of the mountain, the monkey looked around and saw a golden throne-seat inside a jewel-gold cave, peerless and like a divine bed. Gladly he placed Phra Chakri there.

Then he bowed low, prostrating before both splendid royal feet, paying reverence until his joined hands touched the ground. He spoke aloud: "May the host of devas and powerful asuras who dwell in this mountain, and all six heavens, come help guard the righteous lord. I must go kill Maiyarap, the demon-lord, and end his life." Entrusting Rama there, he hurried away, turned his face back, and reentered the city.
