Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the forty-sixth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives the gods guarding Rama at Surakan cave, Hanuman's return to Maiyarap's palace, the weapon-duel and palm-club oath, Phirakwan's disclosure of Maiyarap's hidden bee-life, Hanuman's killing of Maiyarap and installation of Vaiyavik and Matchanu in Badan, Hanuman's return with Rama, Thotsakan's grief and summons of Kumbhakan, Kumbhakan's counsel to return Sida, his forced march to the battlefield, Phiphek's appeal to him, and Kumbhakan's four riddles.

Translation

The Gods Guard Rama

Now the tale will speak of the radiant lordly deities who dwelt in the mountain-stream cave, possessing divine ears and eyes. They looked down and saw the son of Phra Phai bring the lord Phra Narai out from the asura's iron cage and place him at the mouth of Surakan cave. Now Hanuman would return to win victory and kill bold-hearted Maiyarap. So the gods and their attendants flew through the air to Phra Chakri.

When they arrived, they surrounded him, sang, served him, and played stringed music. Their divine music flowed sweetly and touched the heart. Some waved fans and guarded the king's body. Some formed rings around the foot of the great mountain, protecting and guarding the lord of the earth so no harm would trouble him.

Then the brave and mighty Wind's son, intent on destroying the asura, went straight to the royal forecourt.

When he reached the ornate palace, the monkey displayed his brave strength. He stamped his foot, sprang and leapt, and kicked the victorious lion-window panels.

With a thunderous crashing tumult they broke down, unable to withstand his strength. Then he proclaimed: "Hey, Maiyarap the kumbhanda! Why did you secretly steal away the fashioned Phra Harirak? I am his brave soldier, come to fight the asura. My name is Hanuman, skilled in battle, proud as a lion-king. You are like a deer; today your breath will end."

Then brave-hearted Phraya Maiyarap started awake from the splendid couch. The demon lord glanced over and saw the monkey had come into the palace, bold and speaking great harsh words. Angry, he seized his victorious sword, sprang up, and cried out: "Look at this monkey-born thing, proud and boasting that it is brave in power. I am one of mighty rank; beneath the sky no one is equal to me. You are like a firefly with little light. Will you compete with the sun?" As he spoke, he ground his teeth, brandished the sword, and rushed out to attack.

Then mighty Hanuman, skilled in battle, received, guarded, and met him hand to hand. The monkey rushed in and kicked with power.

Blow answered blow in confusion. They pressed, retreated, closed, and struck; cutting, stabbing, and wrestling back and forth, each brave and strong, neither yielding.

Then mighty Maiyarap received, guarded, parried, and fought, grinding his teeth and leaping forward.

With one foot he stepped on the monkey's knee, while his hand brandished the sword raised high. They turned and seized one another in tumult, wheeling and changing stance at the right moment.

Then Hanuman, victorious and skilled, fought close, pressing the attack, and in the right moment rushed in and seized the kumbhanda.

He sprang up and stood on Maiyarap's shoulder. With his right hand he snatched away the sword. Turning and fighting in the press, he struck and cut the demon lord's body. The sword broke into two pieces. The monkey kicked him with brave strength. The asura fell and scrambled up, while the monkey lord leapt after him and struck.

Then Maiyarap, holy and powerful yaksha, having lost the mighty diamond sword, seized a mace-weapon. He brandished it so its light flashed before the eyes, stamped his foot with uproar, displayed fierce power, and returned to the contest for victory.

Each received and struck in turn, entering and withdrawing, pursuing and retreating, until the club broke and flew away. Then he seized a great spear and attacked.

Then the brave and mighty Wind's son dodged aside, fought, and pressed the battle, rushing in to pursue and attack.

With his right hand the noble monkey seized the tomorn by battle-power and stabbed the kumbhanda many times, until the asura's spear broke. Then the son of Phra Phai drew the diamond trident from his body and cut close after him, whipping left and sweeping right so swiftly that the demon could not get his body set.

The Palm-Club Oath

Then powerful Maiyarap, having exhausted his fighting weapons, pondered in his heart: "This monkey is strong. His battle-power is bold and brave, greater than the gods in heaven, siddhas, spell-masters, or nagas. I must think of a trick and use cunning to deceive and kill the noble monkey. Even if he strikes back, I will not fear, for my mind-life is not in my body, and I cannot die." Thinking this, he cried out: "Hey, wild forest-monkey! We two have tested battle and fought hard against one another. In turn neither side has lost in power. Let us make a truthful pact: let this be a clean and righteous fight. Neither of us should think falsely. We shall take three palm trees, bind and twist them into a palm-club, and take turns striking one another three times. Whoever is best will not die. Let it be known throughout the three worlds. What do you think?"

Then mighty Hanuman, the great soldier, heard and considered: "This asura Maiyarap has made such a comparison; it seems there must be some yaksha trick. But I do not fear his power. I will overlap his trick and kill him so his breath ends. Even if I die, should the wind touch me, I will be born back into life. But the demon lord's body, I suspect, will be smashed apart by power." Thinking this, he called back: "Is that true, yaksha? Perhaps the asura's promise will not match his words."

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha heard and answered: "What I say is by righteousness. If I do not hold to truth, may great Indra and all the gods destroy my life and bring me to ruin. But I will strike three times first. When that is complete, I will lie down for you. You rise and strike me according to the vow we have made."

Then the brave and mighty Wind's son heard Maiyarap the demon-lord. He clapped his hands sharply and answered: "Why choose like that? This pact takes advantage. I am a guest who has come from far away; it is fitting that the asura let me strike first. I say this only so you know. It is not that I am stupider than a yaksha. If you will strike first, then hurry and strike. Whoever is best will preserve his life."

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha heard the monkey and rejoiced. The asura went and pulled up palm trees.

Bracing his foot, shoulder, and body, he wrenched and dragged them until they came up by his brave strength: three trees, tall as the sky. The demon lord twisted them into a mace and cried, "Hey, wild monkey! You boast of power and skill in battle. We shall see whose hand is best. Lie down and let me strike."

Then Hanuman, victorious and skilled, heard the asura speak. The monkey lord recited a spell.

When he had completed it seven times, he blew, held his breath, and stroked his body three times, making himself firm, tough, and enduring. Then he lay down and beckoned the asura.

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha saw the monkey lying stretched out. Rejoicing, he raised the palm-club, brandished it, and displayed power. Its roaring sound thundered through every direction. Rising on both feet, he sprang and struck down.

Three times the blows thundered like lightning. The earth quaked and trembled in fear, and victorious Hanuman's body sank down into the ground.

Then the brave and mighty Wind's son was not bruised in his body. He sprang up swiftly.

He cried, "Hey, hey, demon-lord! Do you know Death or not? Lie down quickly, wretch. Send me the club so I may strike. If you love yourself and fear death, transfer your yaksha life: bow down at my feet, and then I will spare the asura's life."

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha saw that the monkey's life had not ended, and that he was arrogant, mocking, and contemptuous. He grew frightened and afraid of his power, his heart burning like fire. Then he restored his pride and mastered his heart: "Why should I fear this worthless one?" Thinking this, he answered, "Hey, vile beast! I will not bow to your lotus feet. Do not boast boldly in words." Having spoken, he lay down and handed the club to the noble monkey. "Hurry and strike me, according to the pact."

Then the brave and mighty Wind's son seized the palm-club and lifted it with battle-power. His eyes fixed on killing, bold as a lion-king, he brandished the mace in both hands and struck down three times.

The sound thundered through the air. The club shattered, and the body broke apart on the spot. The noble monkey tore off the asura's arms and legs and hurled them away by his power.

Then Phraya Maiyarap the yaksha's feet and arms returned and joined as his body again. The asura had not died. He rose, stamped his foot, and cried out so loudly the earth trembled in fear. He sprang with swift strength and rushed in to press the battle.

Then the brave and mighty Wind's son took hold by victorious strength, rushed in, and kicked the asura. He fell to the ground by the monkey's radiant power. Hanuman leapt at once and stepped down on the demon lord's chest.

He asked lovely Phirakwan, "Why is it that this yaksha lord Maiyarap does not die when I kill him? I am doubtful beyond telling."

Maiyarap's Hidden Life

Then Phirakwan the yaksha woman heard the Wind's son and rejoiced. She immediately cried out and told him: "The reason he cannot be killed is because of the yaksha's device. He has drawn his mind-life out as a bee and placed it in a splendid jeweled box. Then he took it down and hid it inside the peak of Mount Trikut. Think how to kill the bee, and powerful Maiyarap's breath will end."

Then the brave and wise Wind's son heard the woman explain every detail, and rejoiced as if he had gained the rim of heaven. Keeping his foot firmly on the asura, he joined his hands above his head and recited the powerful spell, transforming his monkey body.

That form became as large as Brahma, towering high like a mountain, complete with four faces and eight arms, displaying mighty battle-power. His left foot stepped on the asura's chest so he could not move from the place, while his right foot strode out to Mount Trikut.

One hand opened the mountain peak, while another searched and felt within. He caught the bee and lifted it up. "Hey, hey, Maiyarap the yaksha, is this your heart or not?" Having spoken, he crushed it to powder and cut off the head at the same time.

It was as if terrible Yama had come and struck with the edge of his sword. The body writhed, flailed, and jerked, and the kumbhanda's life ended.

When the son of Phra Phai, victorious and skilled, had finished killing Maiyarap, he released the radiant spell and hurried back in.

When he arrived, he sat upon the jeweled throne, released Vaiyavik the yaksha from the prison-house, and handed over the royal splendor and sovereignty, setting him to rule the lands of Badan together with the lesser and greater inner women. Mighty Matchanu he appointed to command, as great royal deputy, together with ministers and brave soldiers, to hold half the city of Badan and an equal share of courtly splendor.

When he had finished handing over the royal city, the monkey lord rejoiced in happiness. Carrying Maiyarap the kumbhanda's head, he went to the four-armed lord.

When he arrived, he lifted the Sun-line bow-bearing Phra Narai and placed him upon the monkey's hands, beautiful like the moon shining in the sky. In one hand he carried the asura's head, displaying bold power. He pierced and forced through the earth and came up from beneath Badan.

Just as he reached the golden victory pavilion, the dawn was nearly breaking bright. He placed the incarnate lord upon the shining Surakan couch. Then he raised his hands in homage to the radiant younger royal brother, told the account of the fighting, and presented the asura's head.

Then Phra Lak, younger prince of the Sun-line, together with powerful Phiphek and Sukhrip, Angkhot son of Pali, the eighteen crowned monkeys, and the noble monkey troops all recovered from grief and came joyfully into attendance together.

Then the lord Phra Krishnuharak, when the kumbhanda's drug-poison was finished, woke from sleep. Seeing the monkey kings and troops all present, the righteous lord spoke to his younger brother, the jewel of his life: "Phiphek the king predicted that Maiyarap the yaksha would come up from the earth, cast sleep on me, and carry me down to Badan. Now the time has passed; the sun shines bright. It seems the danger and harm have ended, and the demon lord's prediction was wrong."

Then thoughtful Phra Lak bowed his head and answered the command: "In the middle watch of night, Maiyarap secretly came and cast sleep over the army. Every noble monkey troop slept. He stole Your Majesty and carried you down to the city of Badan. I and the monkey kings grieved as if life itself had ended. Phiphek explained the event, so I sent Hanuman after you. The powerful monkey lord invited Your Majesty back up. Everything happened according to Phiphek's prediction and Your Majesty's dream."

Then the Sun-line lord, Phra Narai himself, heard his noble younger brother. The king was astonished and fell into thought. Doubtful in his heart, he turned and gave command: "Hanuman, skilled in power, you followed me down to the royal city of Badan. How did you fight and defeat the yakshas, and before the dawn-light had even cleared, bring me back?"

Then the honored son of Phra Phai bowed his head and answered the royal command: "I followed down to Badan, struck through five layers of asura gates, and fought hard battles there. Then I killed Maiyarap the demon-lord, and his life and breath were ended. The lovely Phirakwan, mother of Vaiyavik the yaksha, led me into the city; her merit in this is great. Therefore I placed her son upon the heavenly sovereignty. Matchanu, devoted in heart, my beloved son at Your Majesty's lotus feet, I made deputy king there too, to help maintain the royal city as servants of the incarnate lord, overseeing what is right and wrong in that city." He reported from beginning to end, explaining the account fully. When this was finished, he placed the asura's head in the middle of the monkey army.

Then the lord of the three worlds, refuge of all worlds, heard the account that had been presented, and also saw the head of the worthless asura. Everything was plainly proven. The lord of the earth rejoiced in happiness and praised Hanuman: "Your merit is very great. You followed with a grateful heart and alone did a brave, hard deed. When the war in the yaksha city is finished, I shall grant you lordship over Ayutthaya." Speaking thus, he removed a nine-gem ring from a finger of his right hand, gave it to the powerful monkey, and entered the splendid pavilion.

Thotsakan Summons Kumbhakan

Then Triphat and Mekhanat, skilled in battle, saw that mighty Phraya Maiyarap had been killed by the monkey. Afraid that Vaiyavik the demon-lord could not remain in Badan, the two officers went up to victorious Lanka city.

When they reached the palace of the Moon Mansion, just as the sun's rays were rising, they went up to attend the asura king in the jeweled audience hall.

Both bowed their crowned heads and reported to Thao Raphanasura the yaksha: "Tonight Your Majesty's nephew came up and cast sleep over the victorious army. When the middle watch of night had passed, he seized Phra Rama and took him down, had him placed in an iron cage, and guarded him in the palm grove behind the city. One monkey, strong, bold, and brave in bearing, named mighty Hanuman, broke the gates and entered the city. Your Majesty's nephew went out to fight and died by the noble monkey's hand. The monkey set Vaiyavik the asura as crest-jewel over the people, then carried Phra Rama up to great Marakat mountain. We fled from the monkey and hurried here to report at Your Majesty's lotus feet."

Then the ten-headed one, wise and brave, heard the news. It burned like fire at the end of the age, and the demon king was shaken and downcast. Love and regret weighed heavily; tears welled and poured from his eyes. The more he thought, the more rage and longing he felt, and he sobbed and lamented for his beloved nephew: "Alas, wasted was all his power, all his sharp thought and wisdom. Did he lose to a base monkey, disgracing the Brahma-line Sun-race? All this is because of traitor Phiphek, who told the trick to that beast, letting it go down to Badan and kill my nephew. If I stay still, the enemy will grow bold. I must raise a great army and go kill them. Who can be commander of the army and break the brave enemy? Thinking through my lineage, I see only Kumbhakan the yaksha, my radiant younger brother, expert in the Mokhasak. He has received a boon from supreme Brahma, is mighty in power, wise, and brave. I will make him marshal of the demons to go out and fight the enemy." Thinking this, he spoke royal words and ordered a trusted asura woman: "Go bring up mighty Kumbhakan, my brother and life-companion."

Then the honored court women bowed their heads, received the royal command, raised joined hands, took leave, and went down together.

When they reached Kumbhakan's palace, they bowed with fingers joined and reported: "The lord of the three worlds has sent us to invite you to his lotus feet."

Then brave and mighty Kumbhakan, when he knew the royal command, bathed and cleansed his body. He put on the ornaments proper to his person, shining bright as the sky, came down from the flashing jeweled palace, and went with the court women.

When he arrived, he bowed in homage to his elder royal brother, in the midst of the Sun-line kin, and waited to hear the asura's command.

Then Thao Raphanasura the yaksha saw his beloved brother come and was glad. He gave royal command: "Tonight Maiyarap cast sleep over the army, and all the troops and soldiers slept. He seized the worthless human, but the monkey Hanuman followed him down, killed Maiyarap, ended his life, and brought his master back up. The enemy has become wild and arrogant, and there is no one to oppose them. You, who are mighty, bold, brave, and skilled in war, raise the soldiers and go fight. Cut down all the enemy."

Then Phraya Kumbhakan the yaksha heard the royal words, raised joined hands, and answered the command: "The root of this war, which has spread into killing and distress, began with Lady Sida, whom Your Majesty stole away and kept. This is not a contest over treasure, property, splendor, or attendants. Let Your Majesty send the lady back to Phra Rama, her husband. Then the thorn of war and harm will be ended; no trouble will disturb your splendid lotus feet, and there will be friendship according to the ten royal virtues."

Then the ten-headed Sun-line yaksha heard his noble younger brother and answered: "You speak as if you do not love your lineage. How could your elder brother send Sida back? Our younger sister, a woman, went to play in the forest. How could they pursue and attack her, cutting off her feet and hands? Not content with that, they also killed the Sun-line yakshas. Thut, Khon, and Tri Sian the asuras all lost their lives by his hand. Then he used that monkey Hanuman to break and destroy the trees in the pleasure-garden, kill a thousand of your nephews, and deceive us by burning the victorious city. When Angkhot came as envoy, he spoke arrogantly and crudely and killed the four ministers. Then they sent Sukhrip to break the parasol, an insult most harsh against your elder brother. I will not ask for friendship. Hurry and raise the army to fight."

Then brave and mighty Kumbhakan heard the royal command and answered: "This younger sister of ours bears great blame. She is ugly in conduct, courting men and bringing shame, worse than all women in the world, then returns and speaks only in self-defense. Your Majesty believed her words, losing righteousness, honor, and glory. War has therefore followed to this city because of that vile, accursed woman. As for Sukhrip, Angkhot, and Hanuman, they are great soldiers; in war they seek only victory as the reward in their hands. As for ordering me to go out and fight, I do not yet agree with it. Mighty lord, think of a proper way to ease the matter according to righteousness."

Then the ten-headed Sun-line lord heard and was angry like the fire at the end of the age. He ground his teeth and stamped his foot: "Hey, shameless wretch! Why are you so afraid of death? Like a deer that smells a tiger, like a crow's eye seeing a bow, before you have even seen the victory-banner, only hearing news of war, you collapse. You speak, raising yourself up and boasting of knowledge, saying I am wrong. In what way? You wasted your birth from the same womb. You feel no pain or heat together with me. If you say I am wicked, then hurry away and join the enemy with your younger brother. You will get to rule wealth and property, lord over all the demons. I alone will fight to the death and not be ashamed before the worlds."

Then Phraya Kumbhakan the yaksha was shocked as if his life would end. He bowed with joined fingers and replied: "I objected sincerely. It is not that I fear the enemy. I thought to calm and end the danger so there would be no fighting. Since Your Majesty does not agree, I will fight to the death rather than trouble your splendid lotus feet. I will raise the army and go fight according to the royal command."

Then the brave-hearted ten-headed Sun-line lord heard his victorious younger brother and was as glad as if he had gained a palace in heaven. His anger disappeared and eased entirely. The asura lord rejoiced greatly, drew his younger brother in, embraced him, stroked his back and face, and said: "What can humans and monkeys do? Could they withstand you in battle? Hurry and raise the victorious army; kill all the enemy." Then he gave royal order to Mahothon the demon yaksha: "My younger brother will go fight against those villains. Arrange battle-skilled soldiers, choosing only the powerful and brave, with every weapon and all the equipment for a great army."

Then Mahothon the demon yaksha received the command, offered joined hands, and came out from the audience hall.

For the vanguard he appointed Mahakan. He chose strong soldiers, twenty-one full divisions, and arranged them as a complete army. A green signal-banner was set to the left, and a red three-tailed banner to the right. In the middle row a crafted golden banner stood, so all could watch the yaksha king's signal. If it waved to the left, the left would strike. If it waved to the right, the right would break through. If it waved straight forward, all would advance face to face and press the attack, cutting and stabbing until all was crushed. If it waved out to the left, the left would pursue; if it waved out to the right, the right would return. If the victory-banner waved retreat, the army would withdraw. Every rule was fixed completely.

Then brave and mighty Kumbhakan took leave of his victorious elder brother. The demon lord entered the bathing place.

They opened jeweled pipes and golden lotuses, pouring spray like rain. Fragrance spread everywhere, sweet scents mixed with flower perfume. He put on splendid close-fitting trousers and a raised-patterned cloth with stem designs. The side panels bore ornate swan-vine patterns; coral and jeweled scales glittered. A chest-band and coat shone with brocade and gem-light. Gold armlets and carved bracelets, rubies and sapphires, alternated in rows. Then he put on rings set in Garuda mounts and grasped his fierce mace-weapon. Beautiful and majestic like Vessavana, he went to mount the victory chariot.

O chariot, royal chariot: strange and surpassing, with ornate wheels and rims, with graceful shaft and curved yoke, tiered levels, flowered finials, and a golden throne. It was yoked to two thousand lions skilled in war, excited, fierce, and proudly leaping. Lothan, trained in method, drove skillfully and hurried like a gust of wind. Royal shade and fly-whisks were ready, and the nine-tailed victory-banner fluttered at its tip. Soldiers crowded thickly, brandishing weapons like firelight. Gongs and drums boomed; the troops shouted until the earth shook. They urged on horses, chariots, and great elephants and went out from the victorious city.

When he reached the battlefield, he ordered the fourfold yaksha army to halt and stand at the mountain's foot, waiting for the enemy to come out.

Phiphek and Kumbhakan

Then the Sun-line lord, Phra Narai himself, was seated before the pavilion with the monkey kings around him. Just then he heard the sound of shouting, loud and echoing until everything shook. He asked Phiphek the kumbhanda: "This sound thundering out so loudly, is it the army of Lanka's king raising troops and coming out, or is it some other Sun-line lord from within the royal city?"

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha received the command of Phra Chakri and cast the three-eyed omen. When he knew, he bowed his head in homage and said to the lord of the earth: "The army that has come out is named Kumbhakan. He is great deputy king, powerful and mighty. He is my elder brother from the same womb, very firm in truth and righteousness. He does not oppress devas or nagas; all the three worlds know this. It seems Lanka's yaksha king has forced him out to contend for victory. At a loss, he has come because he fears royal punishment and could not refuse. Lord of the three worlds, spare the asura's life."

Then the radiant Phra Krishnuharak heard this and felt pity. He gave royal command: "Phiphek the kumbhanda, if Kumbhakan the yaksha stands in the ten royal virtues and does not oppress the worlds or bring them suffering, it is not fitting for us to kill him. Demon lord, go warn your brother first. Tell him to raise the army back into the city. If he stays to fight, he will die. If he listens to our words, the wealth of Lanka will be given. Hurry and tell the asura clearly."

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha received the command of Phra Chakri, offered joined hands, and hurried away.

When he reached the battlefield and saw his elder brother's royal chariot in the midst of the army, the asura trembled in fear. His fear was as great as death itself, but he steadied his mind and walked close. He sat down before the victorious chariot, raised his hands, and bowed to his elder brother.

Then Phraya Kumbhakan the yaksha glanced over and saw his younger brother. Angry, grinding his teeth, he cried out: "Hey, base and ugly wretch, wicked and deluded! It is ordinary for brothers to quarrel, but soon they return to good terms. Even if our elder brother grew angry and drove you away, there were still relatives and lineage. Why did you not go to them? Instead you joined Lak and Ram, telling them everything shallow and deep, scheming to kill your own lineage and bring it to ruin. Why have you come to me, accursed one?"

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha raised his hands in homage and answered the asura's words: "I am loyal and devoted to my elder brother. I have not cut myself off from kin; my love for the family is like life. Therefore I reported to Phra Narai that my elder brother, of the same blood, stands in the tenfold royal righteousness and does not think to harm the worlds. Because of this the lord showed mercy and sent me to say at your splendid lotus feet: Ten-headed Thotsakan stole the bright Lady Lakshmi, who is Rama's chief queen and beloved. Rama has therefore come to destroy him. Since my elder brother stands in righteousness, why share in delusion? Remain in truth and purity; whoever is guilty may meet the result according to his own nature. When the war is finished, he will grant victorious Lanka to you."

Then holy and powerful Kumbhakan heard his younger brother's words. He clapped his hands and laughed, then answered: "You are the gut of the war. Phra Rama will give the city to you, and now to me, who have come out to contend for victory? Will Lanka become two cities? Will he give it to the younger brother and then take it back to give to the elder? You can deceive only yourself, accursed one; I do not believe. Narai has four hands, holding trident, mace, discus, and conch; the serpent is his throne, and he dwells at the Milk Ocean. This one is a two-handed human, holding only bow and arrows, wandering in the forest and using monkeys as soldiers. If it is true as you praise him, then it will be clear by this riddle: the foolish ascetic, the cruel deceitful woman, the tusked elephant, and the bad man. If he is Phra Chakrakrit, he will be able to solve it without difficulty. Then I, mighty in battle, will withdraw the army and return to the city."

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha remembered the asura's riddles, raised joined hands, and hurried back.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet and reported to Phra Narai: "Now Kumbhakan the asura does not believe that Your Majesty is the incarnate lord. He has spoken four riddles, briefly and without explanation, and sent me to report at your lotus feet. The matter is clear according to the kumbhanda's words."

Then the Sun-line lord, Phra Narai himself, heard Kumbhakan's riddles. The righteous king sat silent and considered them. He saw that the phrasing turned upon itself and could not be matched to the riddles. His heart circled in uncertainty, and the lord of the earth gave command to the monkey kings and to Phiphek the yaksha: "All of you who have wisdom, what does anyone think of this?"

Then the monkey commanders, small and great, each thought and examined the asura's riddles.

When they could not see any explanation, beginning or end, for all four riddles, they bowed and said to Phra Chakri: "We are blocked beyond our wisdom. They are too hidden to solve, and our hearts and minds are at their limit. Let wise Angkhot go out and speak with the demon lord. Let him draw out the meaning by a clever verbal device. This should not dishonor the incarnate lord, whose standing lasts as long as sky and earth."

Then the radiant Phra Krishnuharak heard their answer and approved. The king spoke to Angkhot: "These riddling statements, when I examine all four phrases, seem to be twisted speech, composed according to one man's mind, not something common among learned and clever people. You are wise and quick. Go out quickly and speak with Kumbhakan the demon lord. Let him explain the riddles in full. Do not let him know the trick. Listen and see what he says."

ตั้งอยู่ในธรรมทศพิธ / ไม่คิดเบียนโลกาธาตรี
พระองค์จึ่งทรงพระเมตตา / ใช้ข้ามาทูลบทศรี
